I confided in a pagan friend that I am a modern, real life, practicing vampire and I am looking for a donor. He proceded to tell me that he too is a vamp, is half-dead, and isn't able to take in blood because he has no teeth to go after the jugular vain where he would be able to feed.

This all brings me to my question. Do others here fight against the "seperating fact from fiction" issues that real vampires face? I am wondering if others out there have this sense of reality or if it is just easier to see oneself as Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise?

It is something I think we all face at some point or another however I know that there is a differance and see it in those aspects.. I get so pissed off at someone who plays games when it comes to being what we are and claiming to be something they aren't.. I wanna shake people who do that you know...
It is those who can not destinqush the differance that make the rest of us look and seem to be stupid.. I know people look at you like your retarded if you tell them your a modern day vampire because of what society has said about it and the fact they do not believe that such a thing is possible..

Most of society when they tell you they are vamp, may be living to much in a world where fantasy overrides their thinking.

I do not doubt your conversation with your friend, nor the legitimacy of such, just that of all the places why he would mention the all mighty jugular.

This is an age old concept about the vampire that is extremely overrated. Which is one very big reason why I do not discuss "feeding habits".

The half dead aspect...Either you are, or your not, there is no half about it, unless you are either a very very old individual, or have the docs paperwork to prove it.

He seemed "sincere" in his belief. He is mainly just ignorant to truth. It is hard to help people understand that vampires do truly exist, though not in the hollywood fashion. Just look at this post. Even people in "Vampre Rave" don't believe in true vampires.

Uh…LMAO…”no teeth to go after the jugular” and “half dead”? Ever hear of a razor blade? Just Kidding.

Seriously, your friend is delusional. I hope that is obvious. I will probably regret asking this but, what is your definition of a “real life, practicing vampire?” Yes, there are others here that have a problem separating fact from fiction. What sense of reality are you referring to? And what do you mean by seeing yourself as Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise? The characters they portrayed are FICTIONAL from Anne Rice's novel. Look up psychiatrist in the yellow pages, choose one, call them and tell them about this.
Just because you consume human blood from another does not make you a vampire in the likeness of fictional characters.

What I meant by real life, practicing vampire is one who fits the basic characteristics AND adheres to some type of code of ethics for vampires. IE: sensitive to sunlight, need to consume blood, nocturnal etc.

what I mean by code of ethics are things like respecting your donor, don't go around biting people, don't go flaunting what you are (at least if you don't want to end up in a padded room), etc.

My favorite website for information has been http://www.sanguinarius.org/ . They are a great resource for what is real and what is fiction. I was just wondering what people here thought about the fact vs fiction. That is why I started this thread.

OK. Good answer.
Sanguinarius is informative, but Father Sebastiaan is a controversial figure in that community. First if you read the sanguinomican (which I have) you find that the are remain anonymous, etc to the public. He has been on talk shows both television and radio. His whole deal ids to make money which he has.

Read this: Regarding OSV's

well I feel that there could be conflicts if the person is not real about their lifestyleand think of the Brad pitt and Criuse syndrome as I call it otherwise the ones who are real and dedicated to their true self and lifestyle then it even then can be hard for the person since our society is still blind and dumb on alot of this Modern Age Vampirism lifestyle . just my opinion

Ethics and the vampire...do not exist, ethics are a moral base for any society. This is common sense...So I say, to hell with ethics...Just govern yourselves accordingly for pete's sake. Sanquin, psi...or other, all need to use blatant common sense.

Maybe that is why I have this link in my profile.... so that those who do not know what a modern day vampire is like can find out... maybe I should mention this link in my profile. It might get more people to look at it.

Yes, this is something that DOES annoy me... when people assume that the blood drinking, undead, turning into a bat, dies in the light vampire is the only kind of vampire out there.

I think that as long as the ignorant live and breathe, there will always be issues for them in discovering what all is fiction and what is fact... when in reality? Anything is possible.

I have several Psi/Sang friends and they all face the issues of people mocking them if they find out.

The point I was after in my babbling was this:

There is the classic vampire known to most on the nig screen and in books.

There are Vampyres which live in and follow a lifestyle.

very interesting indeed, from my expieriences no real vampire goes after an artery such as the jugular because it is hard to stop and almost always pumps blood with every beat of the heart,i would recomend going for a vein since the blood would flow and not pump and can be stopped much easier and is safer for the donor as well, theres no need to cause harm to your donor unless your intention is to harm them.
i think now days one has to sit back and seperate all the fictional role players from those who are truly vampires be it sang or psi.

I think the whole thing with fact and fiction is all a state of mind. I, myself, am unable to find a donor so I bite my lip or drink hot tea after biting my lip and it quells the bloodlust that I feel.

But those that think they are vampires should be taken in to a coven or a court's house to see what it is like to truely be a vampire because the posers just annoy the hell out of me..

Blessed Be...

You know... after a while it's not supposed to be healthy to keep drinking your own blood.

Also it seems to defeat the purpose of gaining energy from the blood or whatever it is that the vamp needs. If it comes from you it won't be very effective.

i've been seen lots of members calling them selfs vampires and at the same time, every time a thread talking about goths is opened, they are the firsts to criticize and putting down the gothic subculture... saying that labels sucks and this and that and blá blá blá... calling your self a vampire is not the same as labeling? really? humph... the world is falling apart...

as i stated many times, i know that supernatural vampires exist... and listen, no one has to believe it... i simply know it. (period) the same guys that call them selfs vampires are the firsts no deny that human sacrifices are not practiced anymore... that such things are from ancient history, and on and on and on... drinking human blood and human sacrifices are practiced by some religions in the present day... and some of those persons have never seen or heard about vampires... do not mix up things...
drinking blood and being a vampire is not nor never was the same thing...

i would like to see some of you trying to convince some of the old portuguese population that supernatural vampires and werewolf's are just fiction from movies and books... hehehe... i would laugh big time...

do you want a quick answer?

movies? i never heard about that, i don't know what the hell is a movie... books i know what it is but i can not read... i am an illiterate... vampires and werewolf's??? humm... i don't like to talk about that, but when i was young i've seen one or two... scary f***** creatures... you don't want to mess with them...

this would probably be the answer you get from an 80 or 90 years old portuguese person...

oh well... let them be fantasy...

a very interesting rant,i feel that there will always be misconceptions on vampires, particularly in the general public and in some religious sects as most dislike anything that is from the norm, and for cultures,it is always to get your point across on some cultures especially when their beliefs and ways are of the old and even showing them proof of existing or nonexisting still would not change their mind on the matter,i say let the believers continue to believe and let the disbilevers continue as well,as everyone is different with the many opinions that are here to be shared.

now, the ones who claim to be modern vampires, as i call our kin, i think not all of them are wannabes... i think they are vampires, respecting habits, and with all the needs... such as blood craving and all that stuff...

Let me ask you this, what was the reason for you to tell this person to begin with? what was your gain to inform him of your personal status? I only ask you this because usually when someone "confides" as you put it it's because you are looking to gain something in return so you either were looking for acceptance from this person or you are unsure of your own comfort level.

well me and a couple of friends seriously researched this. and searched it down into the most avalible reasorce. and scientificly speaking: "there is such a trait as the vamperism. but not like everyone portrays it to be. yes, somtimes the teeth go with the trait. and there are at least 50+ different possibilitys of enhancments and/or defecences. and normally you only pick up 3. and ferther more you are born with it you cant just pick it up from a stranger like aids or somthing (joke) but seriously, when you are born with it. you even have your own blood type. but EXCLUSIVLY RARE (if born with vampism). when you have the enhanced traits you can have from ~thirst for blood~ to ~extrodanary comrehention (react time)**like the world slowed down extensively~ or anything in that matter. so if you have anyother questions about it just pop in and shoot me a pm.

A lot of people see a movie, Interview with a vampire for example, and identify with a certain character. Their ways, mannerisms, etc, wether hollywood or not, are usually adapted to make themselves like the character portrayed in the movies. I guarantee majority of people, myself included, have little to no knowledge what is true and what is hollywood. Hollywood makes everything look so pretty and nice and however else it wants to make things look, they care more for money than truth.

I believe there's a lot of misconception between today's vampyres and those in myth.

While it's true that vampyres can gain strength our sustenance from consuming blood, I think many here on the Rave that are vampyres would agree that it is not necessarily a necessity. More of a delicacy, I would call it.

Also, Anne Rice, though she is a wonderful author, really messed up what vampyres are. Vampyres' gain exceptional... hrm... "abilities" as they grow older. Though I would doubt these abilities include turning into mist or healing wounds quickly, but hey, you never really know.

For many people, the lines between fact and fiction get blurred. Think back to 1996, Rod Ferrell, who started to believe he was a vampire after playing White Wolf's RPG "Vampire the Masquerade," beat his girlfriend's parents to death. Five years later, almost to the day, Matthew Hardman murdered a 90 year old woman and drank her blood after the death of his father led him to become obsessed with vampires.

Do I believe your friend is really a vampire? Not at all. If he was serious, and not just pulling your leg, I think he is just obsessed with the idea of vampires.

I have heard of both of those individuals before.. I saw a show on tv a while back and those are the kind of people who REALLY mess up the image of vampires.

They do not know what they are because they allow hollywood to do the thinking for them. If you believed that everything you saw on the big screen was real... where would you be today?

Admittedly I'm arriving quite late to this Real vs. Fictional Vampire discussion. Yet having now read all the many entries here, I cannot but find the entire discussion at least as ironic as it is ridiculous.

No matter how "real" you think you are or how much a "poser" you think others to be, the fact remains that you are all Human. None of you"needs" to orally ingest blood to survive. Nor, for all you "psys" out there, do any of you "need" to imagine yourselves "sucking" energy from another to survive either.

The truly ironic fact here is that every one of the vampiric "traits" you claim to possess as "real" vampires either came directly from fiction or were derived wholly therefrom. Not one of you has claimed of him/herself any of the "real" vampiric traits found in the original Eastern European vampire accounts such as being able to: transform yourselves into plants and other inanimate objects, spread plague and calamity through entire villages, be an actual reanimated corpse, and/or (for you guys) be capable of engaging in sex non-stop for days and nights on end until your lovers become "exhausted and emaciated" and sometimes die from sexual exhaustion.

You'll notice I never mentioned blood-drinking. That's because blood-drinking is a trait only of FICTIONAL vampires. That's right... this trait was never found amongst actual "real" vampires.

The "real" vampires, the ones actually written about in the earliest accounts, were not believed to be blood-drinkers at all! This belief did not come about until after corpses believed to be the "plague-carriers" were unearthd and decomposition fluids around the mouth were ignorantly believed to be fresh blood. From this observation alone, the ignorant local populaces stupidly concluded therefrom that the corpse must have gotten blood in its mouth by... having drunk it from a living person (?!). This was then popularized in later fictions and voila!... the fictional vampire as blood-drinker emerged. That's right... I said fictional.

From that point on in history, any truth of what the actual vampire might have been was lost to the glut of fictional portrayals that today every one of you modern "real" vampires has so ironically swallowed hook, line, and sinker as... fact!

As for energy "feeding"... there is not a single account anywhere of the Slavic vampire ever having sucked energy from the living. This was solely the creation of far-later fictions from the 20th Century on.

It is prideful delusion at best to think that by simply humanizing fictional vampiric traits -- as you all have done -- you have somehow become real "vampires." This doesn't make you real "vampires" at all, any more than the idiots who sport fake fangs and yellow contact lenses have become fictional vampires. It is all fiction, people, because all of these traits were invented by fiction writers!!!

If you want to truly understand the origins of the Slavic vampire (the only "real" vampire of them all) and their actual charateristics as described by the original Carpathian inhabitants, study the writings of Dr. Jan Perkowski ("Vampires of the Slavs" and "The Darkling", in particular) as well as such wonderful books as "The Vampire: A Casebook" (Dr. Alan Dundes) and "Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality" by Dr. Paul Barber. I also highly recommend the new non-fiction book "Slayers and their Vampires: A Cultural History of Killing the Dead" by Dr. Bruce McClelland, in the editing of whose book he so graciously permitted me a small participation.

Once any of you have actually sat down and read these books and studied the facts therein re: who and what the actual "REAL" vampires were... and still are... I would be delighted to revisit this topic.

(Sorry to get on a rant here... but, come on people... really!)

I think that if humans have us so wrong and have played us up to be these fearsome creatures that lurk in the night and do this and do that, then let them. At the very least it will keep them away from bothering us. I mean, no one messes with something that they think can tear them apart with a thought.

Logically you have to take into consideration in all that is involved here. These tales of vampires go way back into antiquity and they are all over the world described in various ways and some were not even called what we think of as vampires but more like spirits at unrest or shape shifting females that lure men into their clutches. People were less sophisticated and their religious views and superstitions were a big part of their lives. You have to understand most of this was handed down orally and with the church mixing in and using some things to scare people and keep them attending in the more primitive formation when converting people its no wonder there are such crazy stories in the area of folklore.

Ever been to a party and played games where one person starts a story or riddle and then the person at the end repeats what they were told? How much did the story come out like the original? Usually everyone laughs because it doesn't remotely match the original. This is the way with folklore unless it was written down and most wasn't until much later.

Then you have the novels and Hollywood who have added to the mythos and that dang Dracula book. I am well read on the background of that and know the holes in that and know about some things that they did in Romania when the communist rule was overturned and tourists came in demanding to see certain things and they looked at each other and pointed to something and made money. Wouldn't you if everyone poured into your country merely to see Dracula's castle which in all actuality never existed?

All of these things have come together and grown out of hand and people have formed many crazy tales. Now that some have made their own groups well...everyone believes the Houses and all are status quo but most of them are social as is Sebastian's endeavors. He is a lifestyler...many are and that's ok. He made up his own groups, and theories as well as he borrowed from VTM for the blackveil which has been re-written a number of times. There is more than one version depending on who its for and its just their vision and not gospel for the community but many quote it and follow it. That is how something starts...one person writes something and they have followers.

Sanguinarius is a nice lady and been around the bush a few hundred times and most often if she says something is something you can bet it is. I know she and Michelle B and Sylvere were coffee clatch buddies for a long time. All of them write and are very open about their views and into alternative lifestyles but ... and please listen to what I am saying and I am not the end all be all in this but...many don't live like this...go to functions or even look any different from anyone else. It is certain groups of people who choose to be this way and most are Goth influenced to a degree and not that old. Many like Sebastian are very influenced by the BDSM alternative culture which is a choice and has nothing to do with vampyrism. It is just that some follow this type of activity by personal choice. Many of his activities were in connection to Master Steelow who has left NYC to go to Las Vegas. Even Don Henrie went there because of his notriety but he is just a guy who was living in San Diego and went to the local clubs in that area. He is a fashion vamp.

Anyone who would say something about the jugular vein to me would cause me to chuckle its so Hollywood. Mainstream vampyrics do not bite...it is frowned upon and they teach safe practices but drinkinig blood is not safe in this time period due to blood borne diseases and some that can not be tested for in males.

If I hear the biting thing (unless they are heavily into sado-masochism which some are as that community overlaps) I usually think they are trying to be cool and I think they are wannabes. Same goes for those that call themselves "warlocks" it is a theatrical term and also before Wicca meant a betrayer of the coven...all of these are signs of someone trying to impress. I know where I hang we try not to shun such people but just re-educate. The majority of vampyrics do not drink blood or that accompanies other forms of energy feeding.

Since the last 30 years all of this has had people put their two cents in and form groups that are now looked upon as always having existed but they didn't. People follow the precepts as if that has been around since the beginning of time, but it hasn't. They are at the whim of whoever wanted to create them. I could say the only place that had a clear long term underground of beliefs is New Orleans perhaps.

Molli

I think the debate could rage on forever, as it has. We each will believe what we want. No matter what evidence is presented, some will always refute it. I believe we should remain open minded about all of it.

Well, I don't know if there is a debate there or not. Most people will agree that Vampires are fictional characters, and unless supported by evidence otherwise.

Then I guess all of you cynic's would also be bold enough to claim that there is no such thing as Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Atheist... because they only exist because they believe in a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by their group that gives an object of devotion. None of the aforementioned groups have a blood type, ancestry, or genetic marker that shows they are a member of that specific group... they only have a belief that is common to the group... being a vampire only requires that you believe that you are... and practice accordingly...
