I read this from here and was wondering how and if u believe that
dragons derive from the extinct dinosaurs

http://silviahartmann.com/essay-dragon-magic.php

Unlike the other similarly powerful animal totems in use around the world to "evoke" the essences relating to that animal, there absolutely are no dragons.

We have eagles and we have definitely lions; we have horses and we have serpents, we have bears and we have dolphins but there's nothing even remotely like a dragon.

The TINY and entirely unimpressive lizards that are still around and even crocodiles are just not IT. They're NOT dragons.

And conversely, no-one seems to have thought of making a major international symbol out of blowing an ant or a spider out of all proportions!

So in the dragon we have a symbol of an animal that doesn't exist AT ALL - only EVERYONE seems to know about it, somehow!

How NEAT is that?!
Dragons & Other Mystical Creatures
If you compare a dragon to other mystical creatures out there, once again, it is a strange anomaly.

Mostly, these creatures are either crosses of existing species - like the hippogryph, the centaur or the mermaid - or they have bits stuck on from other species like the unicorn.

The dragon is not derived from anything that exists in real life, nor can you get to a dragon if you were to try and cross a snake with a horse.

The dragon is a mystical creature in a class all of its own. Dragons & Other Mystical Creatures

I think humans have a fantastic way of giving certain characteristics to certain animals, turning them into symbols and taking on their characteristics. Why couldn't the same be extended to dragons and other mythological figures?

I think one of my favorite quotes was from a Magic the gathering card. I dont remember it exactly, but it was Just because you chose not to believe in Unicorns doesnt mean they have to believe in you either. There are so many new species being discovered as fossils and still living. Also if dragons are as immortal can shapeshift as the tales tell then would even get to see one.

I personally think the dragons and merpeople are a concept of our minds. The ideas of the beings, came about when mankind had no idea what they were facing...Supposedly, the rhino was mistaken for the unicorn.

But, in the ethereal golden age, these beings do exist and are very relavant on a spiritual level.

I too believe that dragons, merfolk, fairies, unicorns, etc are figments of the imagination. A lovely fantasy for sure, but I don't believe they ever existed. Sorry to be a sceptic but thats how I feel. There is no evidence of any kind, no bones, no dna, nothing to prove such creatures exist.

Well All I know is that Dragons are to be very Mystical and special. I feel that they are also very real.. I feel they are still around we just have not stumbled upon them yet is all LOL I mean there are many places that people have not been to or really explored ... Just like the high mountains of China the people there live to be well into their 100's and alot of it I feel is do to the high altitude and slow aging for the body yet who knows really

I know I would love to find out where the dragons are even if just to observe... I am sure many think I am nuts yet I am a very OPEN MINDED person and leave plenty of room for anything to be possible...

I believe they have a possibility of existing. Who knows truly what is real and what is not? This world is strange enough to have anything happen in it. All we can do is sound our own opinion. So far, a skull of a dragon was found but it more looks like a dinosaur. I can't remember when but it was in the papers some time ago. I didn't know whether to believe it or not. But I am a very opened minded person.

the idea of dragon could have been spread from dinosauors and you never know we don't know how dinosauors died off they may not have all died out and when humans did venture to places were small groups of them still existed they turned them into dragons.

Dragons have always been creatures of legend. Strange how so many are trying to rationalize them into existence. Wonder what purpose it really serves. Mind exercise I guess. First date was the Serpent in the Garden of Eden. Most beautiful of God's creation. Interesting what it might have been really. But since it never happened, its a mute point. Good mind exercise. Lets guess or figure it out. The oldest story I have heard of dragons is that they are past remnants of some of us aeons ago before we descended into the physical. Old memories die hard I reckon. Imagine flying through the Heavens casting flames or bright color Light where-ever you go.

I always thought dragons were creatures of legend as well. They are a nice thought, the original person must have had a very creative mind. However I still just can't wrap my mind around the idea that they really exist other than in fairy tales & bedtime stories.

I may be confusing my facts since it has been ages since I've read the Bible, but I believe there was a certain six headed beast "666" that was interpreted as a dragon.

There are many things that people believe that can't be proven by digging up bones. If one believes in them spiritually as anyone else believes in something spiritually; then certainly they exist to someone.

I think they have as much chance of existing as everything else that can't be proven by physical means. I can't see the air I breathe, but I'm fairly certain it is there. Although, air can be proven by other scientific means. But science hasn't even discovered 1% of who we are or where we come from yet.

All I know is that there are some people that believe in dragon magik. I have been lucky enough to talk to someone who sent me a lot of the information on this topic.
I think that there are dragons all around us, but because they have to live in secret they will only show themselves to a human IF they trust that human.
But it has been a while since I read through the info. I may just be way off subject here.

I used this dinosaur speculation in my reply to the other thread labeled: Draconia

I also contemplated that dragon ledgends could have been formed from man's interaction with large lizard species, such as the gator, croc, monitor, or the comodo dragon.

Well the name Dragon really refers to as "Giant Snake". In the western countries they do not have wings but rather they are just that...giant snakes and we still have giant snakes around even today. The more eastern countries such as Europe...have winged dragons. Most countries, even the Aztecs have a type of dragon. The dragon itself goes back in our history. They are embedded in castle tapestries, they are practically everywhere in ancient cities. If these creatures did not exist, then our ancestry sure did go through a lot of trouble to design these so called "fictitious" beings. ^^

Dragons - exist - just as hope, courage, and faith exist. They exist simply becuase many believe that they do.

De Cartes stated, "I think, therefore I am." Dragons may not think themselves into existence, but I believe we do that for them.

What does your dragon look like? Mine - is a lovely blue irridescent color.:)

I will maintain my belief.

In another topic it was mentioned that there are different universes and parallels. Is it possible that the dragons are still around and we just don't know it? Could they have taken on a landscapes shape and rest there? It is something that we very well may never know. But as long as there are those that believe in dragons then they will be around until the end of time. We don't know what creatures are lurking around in this world. After saying this, I believe that dragons are real and that they do exist, maybe not on this realm but who's to say they are not in another one.

Just my 2cents.

I have often wondered myself if dragons were just what some more uneducated people were calling dragons...Maybe they did not "ALL" go extinct and there were stilll some running around in various areas...I find it hard that stories of brave knights fighting dragons and saving people were totally created with out some sorta basis....archeologist uncovered a dinosaur in the 1900's (can't remember if it was the 50's or 70's) that once unearthed it actually walked out a few steps before collapsing.

Honestly, most people do not believe in dragons because they do not believe in magick because they do not want to believe in something that they do not understand.

I am fascinated by dragons and magick so I have done my reasearch along time ago. Yet after all these years there is nothing definate on them. One theory is that dragons are the link magick in its truest form and reality, without dragons in the world then there really is no magick, another theory is that the dragons left this world during the ancient times because this world was no longer welcoming of their kind and they escaped to another realm with the help of one of the Pendragons, unfortunately I dont remember which one.

By the way I do believe in them, there are many other things that I believe on this topic but that is for a different thread.

I have always been interested in magic and mythical creatures. However, I think all of these creatures of myth are just apart of our imagination. Since most of these legends/myths were derived from the medieval times and even before that, maybe they came about due to the people not fully understanding their surroundings and making new discoveries every day.

Dragons are not the only mixed mythological creatures. There are many more.

It`s interesting that in my area the countryman still calling the dinosaur ones (in fact any huge bone) they discover either Giant bones(oase de uriesi) or dragon bones (oase de balaur).
So it the idea of dragons coming from dinosaurs bones seems to have sense.

The simplest way I can put this is that they are indeed fake. That can't be denied and anyone who says otherwise needs to be taken away by the men in white coats to the happy hotel. They are no more than stories in ancient times that pretty much correlate with the "20-point buck that got away" stories made up by people who like to tell tall tales to get attention. The reason why their appearance is so defined is simple. People have been drawing representations of them for thousands of years, naturally developing defined characteristics over that time.

To this date we are still discovering relics/remains of new Hominid species--so I think it is very possible that there may also be undiscovered relics related to dinosaurs/lizards/dragons that might still be out there.

However, just like myths and legends that have been created about people, there may have been lizards and amphibians that might have inspired dragon legends and proudly bear the name "dragon".

I do not, I strongly do not, beleive dragons are derived from dinosaurs. You could say this is my bullheadedness talking.. But I am an avid 'fan' of both dinos and dragons, and i strongly beleive that if dragons existed they spawned seperately from dinosaurs. They are far too much more complex and advanced. Unless theirs a missing link in that world too?

i think dragons are like say faries in the same ways of how they exist we know there their but just don't know exactly how or why.

i would be interested in seeing what some hybrids would have to say on this topic.

The first recorded dinosaur fossil was found in England in 1819. But, we can't deny that people have been finding dinosaur fossils for thousands of years. Now think about it. Dragon lore is hundreds, if not thousands of years older. So, more than likely, dragons are possibly derived from the fossils found before the 1800's, back when people made up all sorts of stories to explain what they didn't know anything about.

If I was living 1000 years ago, hearing stories about bones of giant lizard like creatures and somebody called it a dragon, I would call it that too.

we as humans in general always manage to find a label to explain what gives us pause to scratch or heads in wonder, the bible is full of interpitations(sp), of what couldn't be readily explained, chariots of fire and such, so who's to say we didn't walk beside dragons as well and call them something else

Dragons may be symbolic of something else...who knows but knowing man and all the stories of dragon hunters, they could have been hunted into extinction as well as the unicorn. It was only in one region that they equated the unicorn with a rhinocerous. Unicorn is any animal with one horn. It isn't truly any specific but as time has passed we think of it as something else because we don't know what its name may have been beyond that if it had any other. It wasn't a horse with a horn like some are now drawing. I just did at least a 5000 word article on the unicorn and they go way back into antiquity. A lot has been written about them. The Orkneys have one on their coat of arms. Many tapestries were created with them; Milleflour. The legends about them are very extensive but they don't look like many thought they did. In most cases they are described as rather small and related more to a goat but I have wondered if perhaps they evolved into something more like the Shetland pony rather than so goatlike and for some reason lost the horn over time. Geesh they say we use to have tails...who knows but there are enough writings to make one wonder.

The dragon is different in various countries. The Babylonian dragon looks nothing like the Chinese dragon and that is representative of the whole country in the past. Even the Ouroborus is considered a dragon so. Don't forget we have Commodo dragons. All anyone can say about it is...I believe this and I believe that.

Edgar Cayce had a lot to say about these things he called abominations which were various species of mixed types, including part human.

I think it's a bold move to derive any conclusion negating the possibility of dragons. Were the people of Kimodo on some hardcore peyote?

For 25% land populous on this planet, I think making any determination to understand what was, and a great deal of what is. Dinosaurs did exist. Irrefutable, yes? Paleontologists, archaeologists and anthropologists may not jump on board the fire-breathing, magical flying dragon -- but do not shy away from the possibility exists.

And to play the other side of my thoughts on this: Memories, legends and the like change every moment. There is no reason not to think the name of something has evolved into something more than it may have been. Our definition of what a dragon is may very well be the former translation of what was once seen as what we presently call a chicken.

There is always some truth i believe behind myths. I like to think that mermaids, dragons, and unicorns exist...there are to many stories from various parts of the world and in different time periods to explain them all away.

How much of the seas and oceans have been explored? Not every mountain has been mapped inch by inch...and creatures as cunning and wise such as these would know how to hide themselves well from prying eyes.

There is still so much of our planet left to explore and many places to hide

Ther most recent thing i remember watching on dragons was the piece that the discovery channel did , when Dragons Ruled the Earth or maybe it was when Dragons lived/ Amd a good point was made that the eastern and western dragons stories have been told for millniums and yet they look nothing like each other. Every year paliantologists and anthropoligists find new remains in remote locations...

Think dragons are the big fish that got away story. Find large bones(dino.) put together a different way and you got a dragon. Find a "weird species" like our komoto dragon and there ya go, one large dragon. It way "this" big. So there is some real to it. What would you think if you saw such large bones and no tv or comp. to help you put it together.

Some creatures, such as the dragon or the griffin, have their origin in traditional mythology and have been believed to be real creatures. Others were based on real creatures, originating in garbled accounts of travelers' tales; such as the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary, which supposedly grew tethered to the earth (and was actually a type of fern). The traditional unicorn may have come from garbled stories about the rhinoceros and/or narwhal. Examples of the legendary creatures can be found in medieval bestiaries.

Conversely, some creatures downplayed as just storytelling, have been rediscovered and found to be real in recent times, such as the giant squid. In Africa, Natives of the Congo told European visitors of an animal that looked like a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. While the visitors assumed the stories were just folk tales, in 1901, Sir Harry Johnston brought back pelts that proved the creature, which we now call the okapi, was real.

Often mythical creatures are chimeras, a combination of two or more animals. For example, a centaur is a combination of a man and horse, a minotaur of a man and bull, and the mermaid, half woman and half fish. These were not always intended to be understood as literal juxtapositions of parts from disparate species. Lacking a common morphological vocabulary, classical and medieval scholars and travelers would attempt to describe unusual animals by comparing them point-for-point with familiar: the giraffe, for example, was called cameleopard, and thought of as a creature half-camel, and half-leopard. The leopard itself was so named as it was historically believed to be a half-lion (Latin: "leo") and half-panther (Latin: "pardus"). This etymology has been kept until the present day, despite its zoological inaccuracies.

Many legendary creatures appear prominently in fantasy fiction. These creatures are often claimed to have supernatural powers or knowledge or to guard some object of great value, which becomes critical to the plot of the story in which it is found. Dragons, for instance, are commonly depicted as perched on a gleaming hoard of gold which becomes the target of adventurers.

Other legendary creatures are thought to exist even today, (these monsters are called modern monsters or monsters that are supposed to exist) including Bigfoot, Mothman, Yeti, Yowie, Yeren, the Jersey Devil, Chupacabras, the Loch Ness Monster, and even Space aliens. These are often called cryptids and are studied in modern times by cryptozoologists, who working from the example of legendary creatures rooted in reality like the Vegetable Lamb mentioned above, attempt to discover what, if anything, is the real-life inspiration for these animals. Some, like the aforementioned giraffe and, much more recently, the giant squid, have been proven to be real creatures.

Media monsters are monsters from books and movies. These include Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Godzilla, King Kong, Mothra, Werewolves and Zombies.

As I say a large pile of bones to one with little education could be a dragon. Probably several different species in one pile became a very large dragon/serpent.

And I totally agree with Undervampsgaze, I want my pet dragon! ^.^

Dragons span all cultures. Theere must be some truth o the existance of these creatures. In most cultures they are a symbol of Strength, Power and Wisdom. Now if this is true then maybe dragons have found a awy to hide themselves from the less developed human mind.
Humans also have this remarkable ability to destroy things they don't understand. There is a good chance that tse mighty creatures were slaughtered into extinction.

There may be no evidence because the bones may have been ripped apart feasted on and crushed or used as building material.

Also how do we no that some of the dinsaur skeletons are alll really dinosaurs. Scientists discover bones and try and put them together in a way that makes sense. But there have been a few instances where a horn turnned out to be part of a hand. Or other misinterpreted fragments.

There are many places the man cannot travel too ( without extreme difficulty) So whose to say that in these places a dragon doesn't exist
Or maybe the dragon has buried itself deep in the earth and is hibornating.

Well All I know is that Dragons are Mystical powerful and special creatures. I believe that they are very real.. I feel they are still around we just have not stumbled upon them yet.
I know I would love to find out where the dragons are even if just to observe, but thatsa not going to happen. It would great if one could actually see a dragon, but until that day comes I can still believe. I'm sure many think I am nuts. I'm open to alot of things and leave room for the fact that anything is possible.

Yes i would have to agree, i would say that they weere a different breed of dinosauars. So many things that have yet to be discovered. With their ability to have mystical powers maybe they are just cloaked to those that dont believe. I mean if we didnt know and have the knowledge we do today and someone told ya about pterodactyls, ya would think they lost their minds, yet we now they exsisted .

The scientific version - Dragons are Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs are Dragons... There is no difference

If you're going for the mythical version - From what I understand, Dragons don't HAVE power, they ARE power. They are pure magic given a form with limitless possibilities.

The Bible describes mythical beings we can't possibly visualize since the languages are hard to translate to the layman that doesn't know Hebrew. For instance I asked my dad since he read both translations three times what they meant by unicorn and he says it's a bull. I'm thinking how in the world did a bull get translated to a horse with a horn? Unless it was a rhino? I love how giants are described. And have my own ideas.
