I recently saw the movie, The Mist. I never read the book so I had no idea what to expect. I loved it. Even though the end of the movie broke my heart, I think it made the movie great. So, where do you stand on what happened in the movie? Do you think we could one day have the ability to open some kind of rift into other dimensions, allowing all sorts of horrors into our own? What scares me is that I think we have that ability now.

I do think it is possible. Why not? heh. This world is messed up all over the place. I do think it is possible even today. There are those still discovering parts of the world and who knows what could happen if they do something that shouldn't be done. heh. But I never saw the movie or read the book........ Kinda stinks since I don't have cable so I don't know what comes out or what's on..... I am missing out on a lot. :/

I thought the insane Christian lady was the scariest thing in that movie. She terrifies me.

I suppose it could eventually be possible to open doorways to other dimensions. The problem is, how do you know what you would find on the other side? It could turn out to be anyything from a eutopia to a hellish wasteland. I think you would need a way to get a peek at the other side before you opened someway to get from one side to the other.

The mist and open doorway to another realm or place, Why not, like the spirits or ghosts, yet the movie i thought could have gone more in depth in this part, of how the door was opened and more on the mist, yet the ending was as you say upsetting, a twist for stephen king and his veiwers, but a good movie, Thought he could have drawn it out more like storm of the century or it. would have been alot better.

The movie was as weak as the book but the book ending was better...upon saying that...anything is possible but IF the US Government had the knowledge and brain power to open a doorway into another dimension...I doubt it would be a world full of mutant insects and giant like spiders.Since we haven't had the ability to travel in between dimensions...you never know what could be there.

i don't think we have that kind of power yet. i think that something of that magnitude is beyond what our scientific ability is.

If we had the ability to open that door I dont know if I would want to, unless we really knew what was on the other side. We could be doing more damage than good

I loved this movie one of King`s best ones. I do believe it is possible for something like that to happen. But, some doors are never meant to be open. like that of Pandora`s Box. I was not disturbed by what happen it just goes to show you how bad things get when you feel there is no hope left in the world. The ultimate price is living with what you done. The horror is it will always stay with you forever. I will buy it one day when its cheap enough. This movie reminded me of an old movie called The Fog. Another good horror movie.

Its a great movie. The ending did make me sad.

I hope the government doesn't have that type of power to open a door like that. It would be too freaky.

To me, the movie was okay. Nothing spectacular. I wouldn't worry about things coming from the mist after you for a long time. Technology just doesn't seem advanced enough for that to realistically happen anytime soon.

I believe it's possible. Sooner or later we'll find out.

i think the best part of that movie was when they shot that lady in the forehead. Anyway I think its a possibility in the future. As to the present I don't think they have anything to actually do it yet.

I think that this is a power that when it becomes available we should becareful if we choose to use it because you will not know what you may find on the other side of the door.

The novella ended with them driving in the car after the huge monster walked over them... just ended like that. He never saw his wife at their home and you never know if they were on another world or dimension or if the world/dimension had broken through to Earth... the ending with the shooting in the vehicle was all Hollywood.

I guess I'll have to re-read the story - it's been years. I thought the whole mess in the story came about due to the US gov't doing scientific experiments that went haywire? I don't remember anything about another dimension...

By the way...we're making giant fruits and veggies, and are cloning animals...giant killer insects seem possible.

Oh sure, I believe it happens naturally already. But could humans specifically find a way to open and close rifts at will? Not that far-fetched of an idea to me.

What if good things would come out of the rift instead of evil things. Perhaps thats where angels come from.

Jarek, you mentioned that you believe that you might have the ability to open a rift. What experiences have you had in that area?

This is something i feel my answer would be both yes and no to. I dont think we can open the door completly maybe just a little. But is that really something we want to do?

I absolutely believe in other dimensions. And yes I think that one day most people will be able to see them and that the dimensions will end up bleeding into each other one day.

you never know what people are working on in labs every where.... i guess if you see a Mist comming RUN and hide.... but i think it's possible

The original short story of "The Mist" did not have an ending really, it ended with the group driving away into the mist, which some felt was too anticlimactic for a movie ending so they took a few creative liberties.
As far as weather or not I think it is possible for other dimensions to be opened...of course I do. Our government has the knowledge and ability to do things that would frighten us all. I have no doubt that if we do not have that power yet, we are trying to figure it out.
Do I think we might someday let in something we can't handle...absolutely. We are vain in thinking that we can take care of anything that threatens mankind but we have been wrong before and I am certain we will be wrong again.

I have read the book, but not seen the movie,I will have to check it out.

I think that would be a very scary power to have as we would not know what we would be inviting in until it was too late.

The Mist was always one of my favorite Stephen King novellas - when I read the story I could almost see the mist coming in over the lake - smell the dampness and feel the confusion and terror of the characters. I hate what they did to the ending. I feel like what made the story successful was the element of 'hope' at the end. And the movie was hopeless and shocking. PLUS - I can't imagine shooting my own freakin kid - sheesh I would have done ANYTHING rather than commit to hopelessness.

I think that if you do not know what stands behind a doorway or a gate, it is best not to try to open it because you might not know how to deal with what you will be faced with.

i prefer the book ending to the movie ending and i do believe in other dimensions. i don't think we have the capability yet of opening another dimension yet.

I have seen the movie and read the book, found both to be exciting. I believe anything is possible. We as humans cannot leave things alone, we have to try and play god and also try and bend nature to something we want. One day it will come back and bite us severely.

I have never seen the movie or read the book, But I believe someday it might be possible to open doors to other relms. I don't now if we for sure have that ability now, but again maybe someday. I agree on what someone said eariler, that how would we be able to know whats lieing on the other end, so knowing before hand should really be taken into consideration.

a rift or a portal can be open I am sure and do not doubt, cause it has been already been open in the past.

I personally saw open rift, not as in the movie but more fo the spiritual realm.
The univers is vast and open, it is barely explored and still so mysterious....so who knows what we will find?

I not only think its possible, I think our goverment has already discovered how to do it and they are just waiting on more reasearch. hopefully it wont have those same effects. watch for the mist, though, just to be safe.

Stephen King is the master of Horror books... as for the movie, the ideas presented can be very well true... I think that dimensions already overcross eachother here, on our planet... If you believe in ghosts and spirits, that is already happening...
Who knows what lies outhere... and experimenting just to obtain more power can only lead to destruction...

I read the book and found it much better than the movie, as it ended much more differently than the movie did.

As to whether we could develop a rip into a parallel universe yes I do believe we can and in fact we have. Does anyone remember the Philadelphia experiment at the end of WW2 where the HMAS Philadelphia was testing out a new cloaking device that made the ship go invisible.

The experiment worked only the poor sailors that were on board were found to be trapped in a time warp or half their bodies were embedded in the ship itself. Lots of horror stories came out about the ship but then it was all hushed up by the government.

We are suppose to believe that the technology was shelved never to be used again. But we all know that is a lie. So yes we have the technology to create these rips in time and possibly make Stephen Kings story come to life.

I dont think we have the ability just yet however I do believe that somewhere someone would be working on the idea. Mankind has this thing with screwing around with anything to greater ourselves. The sad thing is what is going to be the cost.

I think anything is possible once someone puts their mind to it. We have always rushed into things and never think about what the outcome maybe. I think that movies tend to draw us to these ideas in some ways.

i did love the movie but as a lot of others stated the ending was so sad it just broke my heart...since watching the movie i really want to get a copy of the book to read...and as far as could something like this really happen, i believe that anythings possible

The movie is worth watching; for many reasons... especially when people turn agains eachother, when they should be statying together against the common enemy... That is the true moral of it... and that is the enemy we must fight...

Was a great movie, a tragic and suprising ending to say the least. i think eventually science may find a way to open a parrelll world, but We may hope that they will not.

I found the movie... watched a few scenes... and with all you said about it here... left me the impression that it is another SF like many others... and plus it has a bad graphic work... so I will not watch it i guess...

We saw the movie a few weeks back, Omg the ending, how cruel was that. But hell if we can send man to the moon i think any thing is possible there is so much to the universe that we do not know, whose to say that some where in another galaxy, there are not beings wonder the same question ?

Even judging by how advanced technology could get in the future and by how the universe seems to be progressing naturally, unless people figure out how to survive the imense pressure of a black hole I doubt a different demention [if they even exist] really could be reached.

I agree with MBK. I do not believe that it is possible to cross over into another time. It would have happened long before now in my opinion. But the movie brings up interesting thoughts regardless. Just what if that were really possible? Sheesh....scarey to me.

I only saw part of the movie but from your question I can say with assuredness that yes, one day we will have the ability to open up other dimensions.

The question is "whats on the other side" and at present all we have are occasional glimpses. Currently there is nothing that suggests there is any sort of "evil" or even other life forms in the extra dimensions.

In order to reign terror down upon us I would say that opening up a parallel universe would do the trick (as opposed to dimensions). Could you imagine what would happen if all of a sudden we were confronted with rifts in which Hitler won, or the plague never stopped?

I've cleaned the thread of the posts that just said 'I liked the movie, but it was a sad ending' and whatnot.

I personaly feel that the government and science nuts of the the world will never stop until they do. After all. Everything in the name of progress.

As for the movie though I felt that it was alright. Yes the ending was a small twist. But other wise it showed how base fear can cause rational thinking creatures to turn to blood hungery scape goats.

Heck, I think anything is possible, there is much we don't know of other dimentions.And some we may never know.

The world hasn't even figured out a better source of transport nor fuel. No way its invented something this complex.

Part of the idea with The Mist was the secret government station/laboratory...basically what are secret labs doing right now that we do not know about?

A good part of the story was: were they ripped into the other universe/world/dimension OR was that other universe/world/dimension thrown into our world?

In the novella, we never knew - but the movie put it as to theywere in their world with that other one able to enter ours - until they were able to close the rift.

i find it plausable that the story of the mist how it is outlined though not exact could happen on earth in the future,since there are stil l alot of government secrets i think anything is pausable

I think anything is possible. And in the movie, the Army did say they were responsible for what happened. The ending broke my heart as well.

Hmmm I wonder what type of creatures would come through a rift if it was opened, and would they be peaceful or come to tear us apart? Definately an interestign movie.

I believe it's possible. There's no telling whats already been done..The Goverment could already be doing things like that..and we won't know til it's to late.
And I enjoyed The Mist til the ending. It was heartbreaking.

Like distortion said we haven't even found an alternative source of fuel yet. I doubt we will be able to do any thing this complicated or if we tried I don't think we would survive, not becuase of unseen terrors but because of other things such as black holes. I seriously doubt that our technology would be advanced enough to travel into other dimensions...besides there are other things we should be focusing on right now.

For those of you who are Gamers, the Half-life by Valve saga is loosely based on this novel. It's quite an interesting concept.

I don't think it's possible with today's technologies. I think sometime in the future we might be able to do it. But if someone does accomplish the task of creating an opening to another dimension... the government will flock to shut it down and keep it quiet.

Could you imagine people's hysteria if one was created and it was announced on the news? Heck, especially if there were dangerous creatures waiting on the other side of it.

Now the other question is do you think if something has advanced enough technology in another dimension to open a riff into our world?

That would be scarier then us opening one into their world, or at least I think it would be.

I don't know if it would be possible for something from another world to come into ours. I do know that would be some scary stuff. To know that there was something out there like that.

Think of how dangerous it would be in the hands of humans...

Someone in the government would tell the United Nations, they would probably work together to cover it up... somehow, someway.

That would be if they managed to make it possible but no creatures came through it or anyone from our world attempted to go through it either yet.

Think of how scared even the government officials would be at that point. A possible chance to improve our lives but at what cost. I'm sure a lot of 'ignorant' people would go running into the 'portal' with no precautions.

But if it did happen, how many precautions should be taken? Would they work to shut it down or try to go through it and control it?

If the UN did know of such a thing and knew if it caused a major threat or not I'm sure they'd take action to have it destroyed.

That's what I was saying Distortion, if the UN found out someone was working on something like that, they would probably put a stop to it really quick.

i dont believe that we have to think of the future, i dare say there are things happening right now that we as the public have no conception and no control over.

I just recently saw this movie, and with it on my movie-watching frenzy I go into from time to time Deja Vu. With those two movies I got to thinking about whether or not windows could be opened to other dimensions and let things through and the simple prospect of time-travel.

I, very Socratically, concluded with the question of whether it would be more probable that we open a door to a different dimension or that we open a door to another time. Prospectively, both could hold what The Mist did.

While I do think that humans will be able to alter time before dimensions, I do think that both will be accomplished in the future.

Honestly with the technology we have today

I personally Believe that the movie was lame as hell. I have never really liked how they try to make a book or a game into a movie. You just don't do that to some things. Books have a way of better explaining and causing more interaction to the imagination as to a movie you can not fit what can be written into a visual effect that comes from a movie. As to the denominational portal and rifts in time and space I believe that they are quite possible and happen allt eh time naturally

This thread reminded me of the Philadelphia Experiment.

The Philadelphia Experiment was an alleged United States Navy experiment (Project Rainbow) done on October 28, 1943. According to legend, the destroyer USS Eldridge was made invisible, dematerialized, and teleported from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Norfolk, Virginia, and back again to the Philadelphia Naval Yard. The experiment allegedly had such terrible side effects, such as making sailors invisible and causing them to go mad, that the Navy quit exploring this exciting new technology.

There was a movie, of the same name, which is supposedly the "mythical" interpretation of this Project. But there has been said to be documented evidence and witnesses that indicate the experiment may have a basis.

it was a great yet sad movie i agr$ee i think we do have thos capabilities and the scary thing is i think maybe in some way we have already tapped into them in one way or another.

As i have not yet seen the movie or read the book i can not really comment on the happenings in either one but i do think that someday it would be possible maybe to open doors to another dimension as some say but i don't think each and every person is going to have the ability.
Think it sort of depends on their aura and persona on if certain ones can or cannot.

i really think its a possibilty that we can open up other portals, or whatever you wanna call it, now. science and everything is expanding so much. i think if something went horribly wrong, then we would probably open one up soon.. but in regads to the movie, i think it was a great movie. i felt bad at the end though. ]:
