He is known as the Mad Monk. He influenced the extremely spiritual (and naive) Tsarina Alexandra during the reign of the last Tsar, before the Russian Revolution. He is Grigori Rasputin.

My question is, what do you think about him and his alleged powers?

I find him to be quite an intriguing figure. He seemingly "cured" the Tsar's son of haemophilia, and took advantage of the Tsarina ever since he did that. Either he is a brilliant con man that got lucky in regards of "curing" the Tsar's son, or he really did have powers of some sort.

What are your impressions of him?

I've read a little bit about him, and I think he was a fascinating character. I definitely believe he had some kind of powers, if you believe any of the stories involving him. And the way he died? Come on. He was poisoned, drowned.... wasn't he also stabbed? Or was it shot? Hard man to kill.

Yeah, I definitely think his energy was strong.

His fortitude was legendary. I believe energy so easily flown throughout his being that he could almost command it to literally absorb damage.

Fascinating man he was.

He was stabbed, poisoned, shot, bludgeoned...yet it was drowning that finished him off? Yeah, I think there was something different, there. In the animated movie, they present it as Rasputin sold his soul to the Devil himself in exchange for power, & few in real life even argued that. It makes one wonder...

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but when he was pulled out of the water, wasn't his hand in the position as if to make the sign of the cross?

Maybe in a last ditch effort, he planned to appeal to God to spare his life and grant him the strength to survive the icy cold water.

i have long been fascinated by Rasputin...he definitely had something about him that was not of what would be considered the "norm"...according to what i've read on his "curing" of the young hemophiliac son, what he did was simply tell everyone to leave him alone and do not touch him...at that time leaching was a large "doctoral" practice and this obviously would make the hemophilia worse...by not allowing the boy to be prodded and poked and sucked upon by the leaches, he gave the boy's blood a chance to settle so to say...if a person suffers from a severe form of hemophilia even a small bruise can be dangerous...if he wasnt being touched and wasnt being allowed to do things that put his body in danger, his body basically healed itself...of course this was not commonly known at that time so Rasputin was looked upon as a mystical healer for this...however, he took great advantage of the tzarina and numerous other influential women who followed suit with alexandra...this angered the notable males and irritated the high society members as it appeared as if the tzar was taking orders from a womanizing, drunk madman...this lessened the peoples feelings for nicholas's abilities to be tzar and lead the country...according to many historians, Rasputin's involvement in the royal family's life, was quite a large part of their eventual downfall and death

Queenofdarkness19 summed it up pretty good. He was stabbed, shot and drowned before he finally(?) expired. For good measure after he died, they cut his cock off.

Obviously, a man with superior willpower

I personally am not convinced he had any 'power' at all. What is certain is that he was a masterful manipulator, but there were many men and women like him during that time, people who used the gulliblity and supersition of others to make themselves seem more then they were.

Of course I could well be mistaken, but their really is no way to be certain now.

Though I must say that I have limited knowledge of Rasputin through out his life, as with many historical figures there is much about their lives and the details of it that becomes twisted and shown in a skewered light.

people believed that he was into black magic and that with his powers he was able to defy the norm.
so he could very well have been someone with great powers but i think what his greatest power was is that he was able to con so many people into believeing him. he reminds me of hilter..the way they had power over the people and seem to cheat death

Rasputin was definitely a tough dude! Assissins tried to kill him over and over again, and it took the guy forever to finally die! He must have been like the characters in horror movies that refuse to die no matter what is done to them!

I don't know a lot about him, but I have to admit there must have been something more to him than just being very clever (which no doubt he definitely was). Besides being such a fox he must have had some form of powers, even if it was just manipulating others around him.

also i forgot to mention about the multiple death wounds. they very well could be mystical and couldn't die easily but in my opinion he was given so many wounds because the people hated him so much. that when they finally got ahold of him they wanted to mutilate and disgrace him as much as possible paying for all his crimes especially with castration especially since he raped many maids in the palace and of coarse countless others. i would be surprised if he tried to sleep with or rape the royal daughters like the peasants say he was doing

It seems that he was gifted in telling people what they wanted to hear. I'm currently working my way through a book written by a decendent called "The life and times of Grigorri Rasputin". It's not bad if you want a whole picture of what life was like in Russia at that time, and how Rasputin fit in to everything.

From what I recall from my studies, they never found his body at all, or at least never showed public proof that they recovered it.

For an interesting, though fictional, glimpse, read "I, Vampire" by Micheal Romkey. It has quite a few historical references, many of which are based in fact, making it a rather interesting read. Characters include Jack the Ripper, Mozart, and Rasputin, among other well known historical figures.

I myself am supposedly related to Rasputin. Now, before you decide to go all crazy with thought that I making this up for attention, it is simply something my grandmother tells me constantly. Therefore, I have done quite alot of research into my supposed great-grand uncle. He was lured into the house of a member of the aristocracy who had befriended him. Unknown to Rasputin, several conspirators awaited him inside his 'friend's' house. Rasputin was feed several small pastries heavily laced with cyanide. After complaining that they were too sweet, Rasputin collasped to the floor. The Lt. Col. went up to alert his co-conspirators that Grigori was dead. He want back down to collect the body, and as he bent over the fallen form, Rasputin's hand shot up and clenched him around the throat. Even though he was a young, strong soldier in the Czar's army, he was unable to pry the iron-like fist of Rasputin from around his throat. He managed to pull his pistol from the holster, and hit Rasputin in the face with it. Grigory released him, and his eyes rolled back into his head. The Lt. Col. stumbled away, attempting to catch his breath, as Rasputin tried to stand up. The Lt. Col. shot Rasputin in the back, and Rasputin fell. He went back upstairs to once again tell his co-conspirators that Rasputin was dead. As they all went down to check the body, they discovered with shock that the body was gone. They ran out to the court-yard and saw Grigory attempting to escape his perilous situation, and gunned him down once again. He suffered two shots to the shoulders, on to the base of the neck, plus the one from earlier on his right shoulder. They took his body, and dumped into the Neva River. When his body was removed two days later, his hands were clenching the cross he always carried. If you need anynore information about him, message me.

Really, I think he was just a great con man. He was able to worm his way in through the Czarina who was just so naive. She was a German princess, actually, and I don't think she knew what she was getting herself into. Alexei aside, those poor girls didn't need to suffer the way they did when they died.

A small correction. You've correctly deduced that leeching isn't an effective treatment for hemophilia. However, blood settling is exactly the problem. A hemophiliac's blood cannot clot, and has a tendancy to pool in the joints and muscles causing damage to the tissue and to the synovial lining between joints. From my research, Rasputin wouldn't allow others to see him treat the boy, which led people to believe that he was using witchcraft to cure him. Likely what he did was any combination of rest, elevation, ice, and compression. All of these techniques are simple and designed to help the blood flow out of the affected area. I would suppose he didn't want anyone else to see what he did so he could keep his high position in the court. Another common myth is that small bruises or cuts pose a threat to hemophiliacs. While hemophiliacs tend to bruise easily, the bruise or cut merely affects the tissue which is healed by the platelets. The platelets of a hemophiliac function normally, what they lack is one or more clotting factors normally produced by the liver.

Rasputin is consistantly called an evil man. They claim his powers came from the devil, and that he lived to con and manipulate those around him, so that he can reach a higher standing of political power. I figured that people at this site would know better, as many of them who claim to practice witchcraft or some other art, insist that they are not evil. History shows that he has done nothing to constitute evil, yet plenty shows that he is good. Stop falling into the trap of societies lies, and view others as you would wish to be viewed.

Daswolf... To say that Rasputin aided in the so-called 'massacre' of the Czar's family only shows you have little idea of what your talking about. Besides the fact he was dead at the time, they were killed by the Bolsheviks. Also, the boy would not have lived for as long as he did if it were not for Rasputin.

I beleive that Rasputin's powers are simply a legend spawned in a similar way to the legends of ninja powers.

wow i never heard of them cutting his cock off...how sad. I think that Rasputin was a religious person that meddled in black magic because there certainly was something very different about him. But I cant ignore the fact that he was a very manipulative person all around.

I have studied on this quite a bit, and apprently he was a "holy man". My opinion is that he just happened to get there at the right time *juss as Alexei was recovering* and pray over him. However, I guess I have not read quite enough on him to form a real opinion!

History is written by the winners...

Rasputin was gifted both in his charisma and in his drive for power. I don't think that can be argued. He made his way from rural Siberia to the royal court of Imperial Russia and held sway there for years.

His enemies despised his sway over the Tsarina, his sexual exploits, and his less than cultured style and yet it can be said that he was brilliant in his quest for power and in his ability to near mesmerize those near him with his stories, his piercing gaze and his fearless disregard for those around him. There was no event too elegant or formal that could keep him from acting exactly how he chose.

He was aware of the rumors that swirled around him daily and either ignored them or amplified them but never does it seem did he fear them. One has to argue that he lived his life with no master and to the fullest of his possibilities (especially given his meager beginnings).

I can't claim to understand his total motivation or whether he indeed had any powers in the metaphysical sense. I also won't claim to understand the time in which he lived. Surely taking advantage of a court of fools is hardly a crime when compared to the royal line that cared more for games and pleasure than for their own people.

Genuine Blood and Life is Killing Me- Thanks. I think that while we can acknowledge that Rasputin might not have been the most tasteful person, the court of Nicholaus was like a bunch of spoiled children. They often spoke in French as opposed to their own mother toungue and like most royal families in history, they walloed in luxury and games and gluttony while many of their people starved. I've read that Nicholaus didn't even want to be a Tsar/Czar. He found the whole 'job' to be boring and stressful. The family would often forsake their duties by taking long vacations away from the capitol where they could play and enjoy themselves without the hassles of government responsibility.

It's not to far of a stretch that a poor peasant class monk upon becoming intimately familiar with such a family would have little compunction about using them for his own purposes or that he would worry too much for their reputation. It's very likely in fact that upon seeing their excess and lack of national duty, that he would purposely sully that reputation in an effort to pay them back a notch or two.

Twisted Faerie- Do you believe that all witchcraft or powers need be supernatural? I've read that his gaze was so powerful that people couldn't stand to look him in the eye for long...but isn't a powerful charisma and force of will something that can create that same reaction (call it the Alpha Wolf scenario).

et all- Admittedly, there are some aspects of Rasputin's life (and death) that are hard to explain. Likely (since we're talking about a long dead man) those answers will never come to light. He left no diary that anyone has found, and his detractors destroyed much of his history. But the morality of it is what I find VERY interesting. We claim that Rasputin was an evil man...a man who people (and cartoons) have claimed sold his soul for power. Yet here we have the real power of the throne shirking it's own duties...a royal family that for all intents betrayed it's people through neglect and carelessness.

Granted Rasputin cut a striking and forboding figure...but in that sense, I can appreciate how that might add to his powers of charisma and intimidation (much the way a vampire would neh?). Madness was perhaps simply what those around him saw instead of the sharp mind of a man in control not only of his surroundings but also the in control of the rumors and powerful figures in his surroundings.

I am wary to suggest that he is some kind of hero. It is just as likely that he was a parasite or a skilled manipulator...more likely in fact. But does the weakness and carelessness of his royal hosts justify his misuse of them. Was he just one more predator in a less moral jungle. Surely he would have been condemned to poverty and forgotten (or never heard of) had he not exercised his 'powers' in order to achieve his status.

I've no read too much of it, but in some documents he was defined like the "crazy monk" (excuse me if i don't link here those websites but they aren't in english). His figure is definitely mysterious and fascinating, but i think he was just a brillant smart man who got the luck and the intelligence to use what was happening in russia in that time to get fame and fortune... for his bad luck aristocracy noticed that and they tried to get rid of him till they succeed.

I believe personally that Rasputin did not have any real power. His only real gift was that he was a charismatic person alot like Hitler and I dont mean to offend anyone but even the so called Jesus Christ. They all had a personality that drew people to them. But this is just my opinion.

Rasputin is one of those people from history who has held the interest of many people. I think he may have had something in the way of power. His powers of persuasion were strong and he knew how to get a worried mother on his side. His ability to size up people and stituations was strong enough that I think some may have considered him one good fortuneteller.

Thank you for posting this on the forum.

Mikhail - Thank you and not to be too cliche but are you really paranoid if everyone really is out to get you? He was well aware of his enemies and their plots against him (both socially and physically)...his undoing was probably his ego in believing that they simply couldn't succeed. I don't think he was paranoid so much as accurately aware of the jealousy, covetiousnessm, antipathy and hatred in the circles around him...That's not paranoia - it's recognition of reality.

Well I stopped reading midway through the thread because I felt this was going to be discarded for length, so here is what I know...

first off there is an early black and white movie of that hall scene, he gets shot stabbed, put in a bag and then they throw him in the river where he gets shot again as he sinks. It is a black and white subtitled movie from the 1920's.

He was a Svengali, that is all there is too it.

As far as healing the hemo child, he probably had travelled to the Sanbdwich isles, The Hawaiian isles and ate some pineapples got his Vitamin K up, then gut himself open and poured his blood ontop of the childs wounds, so that the vitaimn K would combine with Rasputins Keratin, and cause a scab. Hemos never heal, he must have supplied his own blood, Hawaiian style....

Bloody Gurl - well in Rasputin's case it was probably more do to the way he thumbed his nose at society in his sexual exploits. He wasn't simply enjoying his body or his numerous women friends. Rasputin was loud and brash and allowed the rumours of his trists with prominent married women to flourish thereby harming the reputations and standing of these women in 'polite society'. This direct animosity toward the upper classes is what earned the majority of their ire not the act of sex but his use of it as a weapon against the upper class.

Rasputin has always been a historc figure who's legend was full of mystery. It's been years since I've done any reading on him, (KUDOS BTW for posting this thread!) but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't some of his troubles started because he was rumored to have had an affair with the tsarina?

It's been talked about earlier in the thread...not only did he possibly have an affair with the tsarina but with countless members of the 'aristocracy' of Russia...and as I just said, he was by no means discrete or polite about it. The tsarina affair isn't confirmed but many other affairs were.
