I get a lot of strange comments from people when they find out I have kids not on here but in general. People want to know if I am raising them to be gothic or to believe in vampires. I tell them that my children are people and they will grow up to be open minded and independant people that will make their own choices. I do not feel that because of my choice to be gothic or my love of the vampire culture that it has any effect on my parenting ability. My children are happy well adjusted kids who do the same things that other kids their age do. What are your thoughts on this subject.
Well, the environment that they grow up in can effect the way they think and do things. If they grow up with a gothic vampyre parent, then they can see that as either a good thing and acceptable(it is) or they can learn to hate you for it. I think it will have an effect, that you are into that, but good or bad is up to them. Plus obviously there are other factors.
as long as a parent doesn't push the lifestyle on the child, i see nothing wrong with it. i have an 8 month old daughter and i want her to realize that there is no "right" kind of lifestyle...whatever makes her happy is the way she should go
I am raising my children to have open minds, and to think for themselves. What is right for one may not be right for them. I don't believe one should force their children into anything. Give them the information if they so ask. I don't hide from my girls, but also one shouldn't lie to them. Communication is a key.
i have two kids, a boy an a girl, thay both know what i am, my daughter is curiouse about vampires, my son is still to young. ( 3months old)
As long as you are a loving parent you are doing it right be there for them and they will be great people. I think it is wonderful that you are letting them go their own way!
i c that quit a few older people have posted to this forum and i thought maybe a younger prospective would be of intrest i think that aslong as your not pounding the culture of being a goth of vampire on them then i belive there is no reason to ever think of it as something that would interfer with a childs life i mean i could think of a million worse thnings that could happen to a kid, and maybe haveing a gothic parent is better for a child with more acceptence to other ideas a child could learn to exsprese themself better then if they had normal parents that think goths are freaks and total disagree with all things that have to do with being a goth so i think it's great that you are gothic and have children right on man
Well, I'm a Christian, dating a Wiccan, and we may end up getting married and having children. Our children will be raised to be open-minded and when they are old enough, they will make their own decisions, not only regarding the goth culture, but in everything.
i'm sorry but i disagree with bloodhell place they grow up doesn't allways effect your lifestyle
i agree with the post...how you live your life doesnt mean your kids have to live that way as well and also how you choose to live should not get in the way of beign a great parent ...love the post hope to have more from you
i disagree with the above post..
your parental figures lifestyles and/or habits are and always will have a direct influence on the child(ren) that they are in the care of.
i suppose that there are many different situation that could lessen or strengthen the influence a parent has on their child(ren), including time spent and relationship.
with this in mind, i do not believe that a child with a parent partial to the gothic and/or vampiric subcultures will have a negative influence on their chil(ren) due to this particular factor.
i wish you all the best with your children, they, like all other kids deserve your love, support and protection.. the detail that you are of a culture such as ours should not hinder your responsibility to provide such an environment for them..
well done and i wish you the best.
daeg.
everyone should grow up how they want and believe in what they want. if you believe in vamps. and want to share that with them and even teach them about them that is fine but dont push it on them
make sure they know that they can choose to believe that it is all bullshit if they feel that way
i imagine that one day when i do have kids of my own that i will let them grow up with a open mind and yeah let them develop their own ideas. i wouldnt want to yeah try to be someone im not just for their sakes. i would want to be myself.
i have my son and i dont let him know about this yet cause 1 he is only 4 years old but when he gets older if he wants to know i shall share with him but right now he is a straight out skater / surfer boy
You're always going to find those type of people, since humanity fears the unknown,go to live in a small country like mine and a certain thing is more popular.
If I'll have kids I'll let them be free to choose whatever life style they want and I wouldn't mind telling them my love for the gothic scene, vampires and mythical creatures.
Everyone has the right to raise their kids as they want to.What you're doing is admirerable cause it's rarely to find someone who raises their kids in an open-minded backgroud.
The same argument can be said about any religion or practice though. If you force it on your children they will rebel. If you teach them with an open mind and allow for freedom of choice, then you will have happy and well adjusted children.

I grew up VERY conflicted because of having a mother very blatant about her metaphysical views. It took me many years to find a comfortable place in my spirituality.
I am afraid, when you are different from the norm- it can have an adverse affect on your children. I really wish I would have grown up with a stable spiritual life. Which of course could not be with Christianity on TV and at everyone else's house and pentacles and tarot cards at mine. Other parents would not want their kids at my house, or maybe even me at theirs- so I just had to keep quiet about my mother.
I know everyone is different- I am very open-minded today but I do not credit my mother for any of it- just because she follows an alternative path did not make her open-minded. I found that she was VERY close-minded about The Bible and everyone else. I find that it is very common that people put so much effort into what they believe it ends being just as much of a close-minded life as those who are STRICT conservatives.
The key is being able to balance. I do not label my spirituality, because I have picked things up along the way from so many. I have grown to appreciate everyone, only it started out of teenage rebellion. How crazy is that? I rebeled by going to church youth group- lol.
Exactly,if my parents were more open-minded especially in religion I wouldn't have all this anger for them.
And no it's not teenage angst am 21 and still have problems with my parents.
Even tough most people follow their parents example I will not.
I am going to be differet from my parents.I believe that a parent is a parent in certain situations and a friend most of the time. Not a dictator like my parents.

Just keep in mind- just because you are gothic, a vampire, or Wiccan DOES NOT mean you are open-minded. Some are- some are not. Commend those who give their children options and education in many different things.
My son learns about everything. He doesn't learn about the vampiric lifestyle because I am not one and I personally feel like he should be older for that kind of an introduction, which I will talk to him about it then- but he does learn about Christianity, Judaism, Asastru, Wicca, and many others.
He doesn't learn about the vampiric lifestyle- but he does know about and loves vampire fiction just like I do. After all, I am here because of my love for Vampire literature and movies- like many others. And he believes just as I do that those vampires are not real.
Being that he is 6 and the age that goes to school and tells all the kids everything he knows- if I was teaching him about vampires being real- he would go to school and fight those facts to all the little kids- those kids not having the whole discussion, hence sending them home with nightmares, or questioning their parents who would then call the school to talk about my son. Those kids would not realize he meant vampires in a different sense than the movies, and I would not trust his 6 year old little mouth to be able to explain it to them in a way they could understand.
Yes of course when I said open minded I wasn't referring to those things only.
As for certain things I would wait to tell about them...but I am not in the vampiric lifestyle anyway.
my children are older one almost 18 but have experienced my discovery of things and are witnesses to this journey called life of mine. I have told them why I have certain beliefs with full energy because they deserve that explanation from me. However, I have told them that they are their own souls on their own path. And they must walk that path to sef discovery on their own. First of all to believe in themselves as souls...not just human and to know that they are definately powerful beings in control of their destiny, and reality. Once they have that strong root...they can be strong trees so to speak and will find light in their own way.
One thing I have taught them though, is respect for all things...because one should not dabble in the spiritual world ...or try to call a demon and talk down to him or laugh at things one doesn't know anything about. knowledge verses ignorance and respect until that respect is not deserved... I have taught them to respect and to command respect and be deserving of it.
But their paths are theirs..and as a Strong soul I must accept that....Both are very spiritually gifted and skeptical...but work magic in their own ways....lol. and both look great in hooded cloaks...smiles* but I allow myself my journey and allow them their own journey as well.

No matter what the subject, it's all based on how you approach your children with it and if it is done in a mature way. If you have you head on straight- 9 times out of 10 the same can be said for your kids, vampire lifestyle or not. In my situation- my mother's head has never been on straight, add an alternative path to that mix and you have a disaster.
Exactly we are like everyone else but not everyone understands it.
I get asked if my parents know how I get dressed for example and my parents ask me a lot of things about the gothic scene -_- people fear what they ca't understand.
yes you all seem to be able to say what is right. Well done.
we have 2 kids too and we are not going to close them off.. if they want to be something they can be it(mind you no things that get you in trouble like jail time).. we are wiccan, love all the aspects of gay/straight/bi things. we study a lot of different pholsiphys and religions, and tolerate everybody as an equal.
i think its no ones business how you raise your kids except you.

Unfortunately it is all of our business since some people think it is cool to raise your children in cults that believe in incest and locking them up in basements, burning them with cigarettes and depriving them of food.
Now- we are not talking about any of that here- but that is why it is our business to keep an eye out for strange behavior. If something bad happens in a house of people following th vampiric lifestile- I can guarantee you it will be used against you in court with a jury of conservative types- that's just society.
Just like when some former Marine committs a crime the first thing you read in the paper is 'former Marine does '.
I believe that you all are most likely doing a fine job raising your children. I am just bringing up facts as to why the public is so much in our business- sucks for us- but the faults of the idiots out there.
I have two children and they both have vasinations with vampires and the gothic community as a whole. We do research projects as a family whenever they have questions on things. I try and teach them that it is ok to ask questions and to look at things from a differnent perspective and not nessicarily my own.
I know that my daughter is showing signs of following along in my interests but she is only 12. What she does with the knowledge that she gains is up to her when she is older.
It is the goal of each parent, or so I hope, that thier children are raised in a loving atmosphere that encourages them to use thier minds and intellect to accomplish that which they belive they need to do in life.
There are many factors that contribute to a household and reguardless of what they are, raising children FOR ANYONE is a challenge.
To raise an open minded young adult who will adjust to the world around them when they are on thier own is the best that anyone can do. If they happen choose something other then what you have, you will hopefully suppor them in that view.
Just because you have certain believs and ideas and have exposed your children to them, does not mean that they will grow up to be just like you. Each individual will take what they find sutable for them and make it thier own and, when they become parents {if they do,} they will pass on thier insites onto the next generation and so on and so forth.
facinations even.. goodness my spelling just went to crap in a handbasket..
lol
children are human beings...they posses brains so that they can think so...we should let our kids make their own decisions
i completely agree with what you have said....... a child has his/her own personality and as they grow that personality grows.... as long as you teach your child to be open minded to the world we live in they will make their own choices on lifestyle......... if they choose the gothic lifstyle or the fascination with the vampire world then so be it but if they dont then it is their choice that they have the right to make
It isn't as difficult for me to raise my kids around my lifestyle as they are only here for part of the time. They do however share a lot of the same interests as me. They are 11 and 8 and listen to the same kinds of music, watch the same movies, and have similar literary interests as I do.
I believe as long as certain views are not forced upon a child they grow up to have their own opinions. I think they will be influenced by your choices but not necessarily in a bad way. I have a completely different outlook from my parents and they have some radical views on certain subjects. If your interests are kept to yourself then your children will make their own mind up. Good luck.
Raise your child the way you choose to don't listen to others.
I have 3 children of my own and 2 grandchildren they all know i am wiccan and am a phy.......they also know of other beliefs and faiths that are out there and that they have the right to choose what they feel is best for them.....my son is a goth and follows in my footsteps cause it feels right to him......i raised my children to be respectful and good people that is what should matter.....just because we are different doesn't me we are bad or wrong at what we do or how we chose to live ours lives and raise our kids
i agree with alot of people but not with the hole it were u live thing cause i live in place where alot of people think goth means i have to worship the devil but as long as ur raising ur kids right and not abusing them people should mind their own but thats just what i feel
I was raised in a Wiccan home. I grew up realising that there is no one way to do things, and no right or wrong when it comes to lifestyles. The only boundry is that your choices not cause harm to others. When I have children I hope to instill in them the same freedome to choose their own path.
I'm going speak from a different side of this. I'm only 20, though I do have 2 kids of my own. My mother wasn't gothic or anything like this, but she did practice. When I finally realized that I was different, she was the first person I turned to. Instead of opening up and explaining things to me, she hid them. And because of this I went to other sources and got into much trouble. It also caused the bond between us to fade. i think that a parent should be completely honest with thier kids. However they should consider the age that they expose them. Don't go out let your 3 yr old watch Hollywood vampire fills, then try to explain back what's not real. But like I said. They should know. the truth is really all that most people want. And as they are your kids you should give it to them regardless.
One thing I haven't heard anyone mention is, has anyone had problems dealing with Child Protective Services (or something similar) because of your lifestyle or beliefs?
I live in Va, Land of Pat Roberson and Jerry Fallwell (2 of the biggest frauds to ever exist), and not only that but you have tons of VERRY Conservative people who have nothing better to do but but into your life and force their views down your throat. I have a friend who is having to fight in the courts right now to get her son back, because her mother is a PsychoChristian (the kind that thinks that if you are not Christian you don't deserve to live). My friend and her husband are Wiccan and both Goths. The courts out here are a joke and take months or years, even when the final ruling is that they shouldn't have been involved in the first place. The lawers are fighting it out, and unfortunately my friends have a legal aid lawyer, so this could take forever.
Has anyone else had this problem? Nutty, paranoid, overzealous relatives, social workers, ect?
well almost everything is a two way road. you can have what they call a "normal" upbringing and turn into a vampiric goth and people wonder how it happened. Just as you can be brought up in a vampiric goth home and choose to be normal. so i dont think it matters and people have no right to judge because we could judge them for the things they do...
I just hope I can have kids. Period.
I'd settle with them wanting to be with other people to be 'normal' or if they liked and had questions, teach. It's the only way to be sure there will be open-minded individuals in hte future.
I agree.. I have a little girl and she is very indepent for only being 4 1/2 years old.. She knows just what she wants out of life and she tells u everyday so u son't forget it..
I believe that children should be allowed to make up their own minds as far as what their lifestyle should be.. I got lucky and had my grandmother around to save me from my mothers strict view on how everyone should be normal. My grandmother was the one that would listen to my ravings about all the things I saw and heard and felt. At a very young age I knew I was different. I saw auras, had visions and knew damn well vampires existed. My grandmother knew too. and she never forced that on me. She was there to listen and smile. I want my kids to be able to make their own decisions... and that means wearing what they want reading what they want (within limits) and listening to the kind of music that soothes their own type of soul. I know I want to raise my children to be openminded, and accepting of other lifestyles and beliefs.
hey you said your lettin your kids be open minded so whats the problem? i think its fine.
Raven Cadwell....I have heard alot of CPS getting involved with cases, where someone of one religion is against someone from another in terms of raising a child.
The scariest thing I have recently read while looking this topic up was this article.....
http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/article_main_page/0,1703,A%253D153390%2526M%253D50018,00.html
I worry about having my son, and what happens when he see's how his mom and dad live, we are not gothic, we are pagan, agnostic (I am wiccan). We like the darker aspects of things. My husband is a car and biker guy. We have Ferrets, and have had rats. We like skulls and crossbones, dark red and black, gargoyles and such. Are we going to have to worry that someone will call CPS on us?
I think that if you raise your child, no matter the religion, to be independent, strong, and sure of themselves, then you will not have a problem. A well adjusted child is not a bad thing. A child sheltered and not allowed to think for themselves, a close-minded child, becomes the close-minded adults that seek to hurt others for something they don't understand.
Children will always choose there own path if they are not intentionly over influenced.
Well i too am a parent, and a friend of mine recently asked me what im gonna do if my son is given a hard time because daddy looks "weird" or like a "freak".
I Simply told her that I have no worries as my son will have an understanding that not everything or everyone is the same and to accept the differencies in this world. Also that if he needs to tell his classmates/friends and answer then he can say well you see the preps and the goody gooies? Well there has to be evil to balance out the good, dads just doing his part to maintain that balance.
Well I think that all I would have said has been said already... But I would like to say that I agree with a lot of things said here. Children are independant people with their own thoughts and eventually their own morals and beliefs. As long as the household is loving and shows them that they are cared for and loved the way they are, I think they can grow up to be very well adjusted members of society. I personally have one child, age 8 (high medical needs), and she is a very kind and thoughtful person. She is able to relate to anyone, and seems to be becoming a very spiritual person. She does tend to like the punk/goth type look (keeps asking when she can have piercings and dye her hair, and understands that she must be in her late teens, at least 14 for dying hair and 18 for piercings). But she gets along with everyone and thinks all types of people are beautiful. She also seems to enjoy my look, and doesn't mind/notice when people look at me different.
right on I think your kids will look back one day and thank you for the way you rasied them. your a good mother and I know this for a fact because I’m growing up now were my mother doesn’t let her kids have a open mind.
PhoenixTempest, I just read that article. I agree, it's shocking.
I'm a Christian. I'm also an avid learner of magick. I get really pissed when other Christians try to convert others. The choice isn't theirs to make. Only the individual can make their own decisions. As far as kids are concerned, it is no business of anyone else's what religion a household practices or how they dress. More often than not, a goth household is a better environment for a child to grow up in, because he/she will be taught tolerance, indepepndence, and the importance of making your own decisions.
That's what I think.
I think its just wrong. In that article they teach how to "Witness" to teens. What if I wanted to go door to door and preach my beliefs? I think that someone would call the police on me, or at least make things hard for me. Its articles like that, that worry me the most.
Also, I am not trying to slam Christians....thats just the article that I came across and read.
I think a gothic home teaches a child alot and is generaly good for the child. I personaly thing it teaches them to be a little more knowledgeable of the world
I wasn't taking it as a slam. I hate it when other Christians preach their beliefs, too. Especially since they're wrong most of the time.
Not saying that you did. I just wanted to clarify for anyone else just in case. Thats all.
:)
all I have to say my sister is AMEN ! PREACH ON SISTER!!!! its about time love the thread
I am Buddhist... I am Vampire...my two boys will grow up living as they see fit...my oldest worships me and will like what i like...i see it flattering...it shows that i am giving him all the love i can if he wants to like what i do...my youngest is too young...and has downsyndrome...he i will always protect with my darkest powers...he is the angel in my life...
goth, vampires, whatever is out there in this world will have some influence on the kids...it is our jobs to guide them out of terrible trouble, dont hold their hands, they have to make and learn form their mistakes...
we are to be there to answer their questions with our giving judgement...we dont like when society judges us..we should not do it to our kids or others....
if so we will die
To be perfectly honest i would rather my child (not that i want children) grow up in the gothic culture than the modern norm! Look at pop culture, all dressing the same, sexualised at a young age and listening to songs which are obviousley about sex and shallow cliche'd lyrics.
now picture an openminded child dressing in variouse styles conforming only to the more gothic styles, thoughts of the philosophy of life, death and immortality, music which has far more meaning and that is far less crude and not dressing like a three foot prostitute at a young age! which would you choose?
I think people can be ignorant shallow
all that matters is you love your children and no its not a chore.. it comes naturally people just tend to live blinded most times.. cause they dont want to look at themselves.. so they judge other people that surround them in their daily lives.. gives them something to do.

in regards to 'weyvern' saying "Look at pop culture, all dressing the same, sexualised at a young age and listening to songs which are obviousley about sex and shallow cliche'd lyrics"
- you could say the same for the Goth style... look at all the sexuality displayed on this website alone in some of the profiles. It is NOT about your style and the clothes you wear, it is how you present yourself in that style.
It is only 'pop' when a lot of people like it, pop is short for popular and there is no reason to hate just because it's getting applause from the masses. You can go too far trying to be different to where you are left with not much to choose from.
How about parents be individuals- & encourage their children to do the same, Goth or not.
i believe no matter what type a home a child grows up in they will form their own opinions on life.. what they get from the home is one thing, doesnt mean thats how they are going to be..
What I've come to realize is that if a household tries to force any sort of lifestyle, religion, etc. on their child, chances are they will be least likely to follow it once they are out of the house. If the child is taught the importance of being their own person, they will be more likely to make an educated decision as to what is right for them.
Children are a product of there enviroment ,as long as they are raised to understand choice then its up to them what path they follow tc
Exactly. If they are raised with a doctrine being shoved down their throat, then they may be too biased to make an informed decision. I had Catholicism shove down my throat from an early age. I am still a Christian, but I don't agree with organized religion because of it.
well my parents are both Vampires, And my children will grow up knowing who and what there family is, sugar coating stuff to children just makes life harder on them in the long run, not to say that you should just tell children the harsh truth, just don't lie
sorry if i make anybody mad or upset because everyone knows that no matter who you are, what you belive in, or how you raise your kids someone in the world is going to be against it (tell them to get over it) as far as your kids hateing you because your a vamp, at some point in thier life they are going to get upset and say something they don't mean either to your face or to a friend! don't worry about who you are or what others say about you, just be you, make sure your kid(s) knows you love them and tell them every day that they can be anything they set thier minds to!
my opinion is that you should not force your style onto your children becasue they are their own person and can secide for themsleves what they are...
My dad used to be a hippy and listens to loads of Bob Dylan and folk and country and stuff and I'm nothing like that. He even thinks that goths and the vampire culture look strange. He thinks it's cool, but he's nothing like that himself. He even tried to stop me growing my hair as long as it is because he was worried people were gunna beat me up. Well it happened like, but I'm still here.
Anyhoo - I think the environment does have a lot to do with raising children - not what you look like. It doesn't half piss me off when people are all "Uhhh. Is yer dad a gofff?"
im a wiccan tripplett and my mom was full blood witch and my dad full blood vampire and it dident go well where we used to live so they tried to cram cathloicism down or throat for our life and they repented theyre own religon but my sisters and i still make our own choices to be what we are in wich is im full wiccan my other sister id half vamp and witch and the other is full vampire i think that you should never force someone to believe somthing they dont even if u do
I completly agree with you. I believe that it has nothing to do with how you raise your kids. I mean my daughter should be coming into this world in a couple of days, and me and her father aren't what socitey wants for parents, but I really don't care. And if my daughter grows up, not liking my views, that's her choice, I won't force it on her. She is her own person and has a mind of her own. So I don't think that it's wrong at all!
I think that when your children reach a certain age they will begin to find their own identity as long as you dont try to stifle it...
My Parents have nothing to do with Gothic Culture. Nor do any of my siblings, I chose to follow this path.
If I followed the path of my parents I would still live in Newcastle andwork on a market...Or be an alcoholic Catholic..
Just because you are living a Gothic Lifestyle and like Vampires, does not mean your children will follow that suit.
I think that people who believe that children turn out like their Parents give children little credit as individuals.
You found your path and walked it what makes you think that children of this age wont do the same.
As long as you let them be free and open minded you will be a great parent no matter what lifestyle you choose to follow. Your children will be able to make thier own choices when they are old enough to do so...

I think it is safe to say the majority of folks on this website do NOT have parents that were Goths or living a vampiric lifestyle. I know there are some- but at least with my generation (30s) Goths simply were not around when my parents were young. I have the opinion that the majority of those on this site also did not have parents that were involved in vampirism. But since I don't know for sure, I have submitted a poll that will hopefully be posted soon so we can find out the stats.
As per wikipedia: "first became popular during the early 1980s within the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of post-punk."
Just curious to see how many of you that are happily living in the darker side of life got there out of following your parents path. I wonder what infulences were most prominent- was it your parents? or your generation? I think it is more of a generation thing.
I have a 2 year old daughter. Would I perferr that she ended up in a gothic lifestyle like mine? yes. Am I going to force it on her? no. it's her choice to make when she's older.
as for the whole CPS/CYS thing, I am scared to death b/c I'm a practicing witch and my ex's family is straight up catholic. If they ever found out, I'm sure they'd cause trouble just for the sake of causing trouble. thank goodness they are 300+ miles away ;)
i personally don't have any children (yet), but i know how my friend raises her daughter, she see's me and other people all dressed up, and she is well adjusted.
I was raised in a very religious atmosphere, went to a cathlic school so on and on, and, thanks to my ma, i have very good people skills, morals and so on. what i am trying to say, is that enviroment, and how you are raised is never a set in stone your going to turn out a certain way, it really depends on the child and the parents together.
theres nothing wrong with it just dont try to make them that way if they dont want to but honestly i think it would only make them cooler
I believe it is a shwllow minded person to look at it in that way. I mean we all make our own choice as we grow up with our parents and just because they choose to do something doesnt mean we will to.
I would agree what your doing is the right thing, its not as though you make them sit there and practice the dark arts or what not.
The way that you describe raising your children seems great to me. That sounds better than what most people do!
well i dont see how haveing a parent who is in to this secean would change the child in any way shape or form. My mother in in to terot cards and things like that, but too lokk at her you would think she was a very "soccer mom" type of person. i do think haveing a mother who is open minded was very fourtunet for me because it let me see very different sides of life. but my mother didnt force her life on me i chose to take it differently then my mother, she doesnt understand my way but i still understand her's.
I have my child who is only 4 months old, and I've already made the decision not to get her baptized. Alright, in this short time, you will not believe the cynicism I've received, but that's alright, I can handle scorn from others. My biggest fear is what my daughter will have to deal with once she begins school. Due to the community I'm in, I'm afraid of ridicule of her only having one parent, let alone one that is wiccan and goth. Now, how would you avoid that?
I have 3 kids, my youngest went into a gothic phase and she is going to a private very religious school.. I have respected my childrens right's to explore and express themselves.. In this situation, my youngest daughter influenced me.
Being a child of a vampire-crazy, my father and I both share a fascination for vampires and vampire realted stuff. It was an aquired taste and I plan on raising my kids the same way.
im pretty sure youve already gotten this response alot, but i have a child (11-17-2005), im raising him in a god-less nature. i want him to choose what he wants. But you have posted this question in a pro-vampire setting, you must take this same question and repost it in a non-vampire page and find out the results in that section. good luck, and if you want to talk more, please send me a message, im bored anyway.

I wanted to let the people know that are following along with this thread- that I just posted a poll on what kind of path your parents follow/ed. Just so we can see what kind of influences we've had or not from our upbringing. I am still under the impression that the Gothic movement is more of a generation thing than your home enviornment.
To everyone who has responded to this thank thank you first of all. I am glad to see so many positive attitudes and feelings about this issue. I personally have raised my children thus far with the ideal that they are their own people and only they can choose what faith they will follow. My oldest son knows about goth and vampires he dosen't believe in vampires per say and that is fine with me. I tell him that no one has the right to tell him what to think and believe. The only reason I am here is to guide him and love him and nurture him. Teach him right from wrong and help him to find his path. But ultimately it has to be his heart that he follows. I have encouraged him to research many different spiritual beliefs he so far has chosen the christian path and I am very happy for him because it is truly what he feels is right for him at this stage in his life. I also have raised him not to judge anyone who dosn't believe or practice the religion of his choice. I do believe he is going to be a very well adjusted and well informed man some day that will have the spiritual peace he deserves in his life. He tells me all the time that no matter what I believe I am his mom and he loves me and he knows that I love him and that is all that matters. Now as for my daughter well she is only 2 so we got a while to cross that bridge again. So far the only thing she believes in is santa and the easter bunny so we will leave it at that. Again thank you all and I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on this and other post.

Well, Ms. angelicvampire- it sounds to me your are doing more than 'fine' in raising you children. Your love and ways in which you have chosen to share knoweldge and be supportive are note-worthy. And that is credit to YOU, not your path :)
Children have the right to view the world at all angles.
their own path will open up to them when the time is right, just continue loving them as you have done and they will find their way
you know, the biggest hurdel that I have come across raising children out of the mainstream is dealing with her peer's parents. It's kind of hard when her friends parents look at you as being strange and then they color their children's views against your child.
raise your children as you see fit..You are their parent no one else is..So as long as you care and nuture your child/ren no one has the right to tell you how you bring them up
My plan for raising my children is quite simple. When they are little I will begin to teach them about about all religions not just my own beliefs so that once they become aware of what they want to be I will know that I have done all the preparations to allow them to make their own choices. If however; they decide to follow my path, I will show them everything that I know and will pass down to them my family's linage along with the teachings of which my great grandmother passed down to me.
Rianna-my daughter isn't baptized either. i got a little bit of ridicule from my ex's parents but i just told them that it wasn't any of their business and to stay out of it. i really don't think it's something you need to mention b/c that's a private thing.
I hate that about the way that couples inlaws have so much power over the growth of others children that's bs. They have their beliefs, good keep them away from influencing our children...

Let our children find their own paths...

Out of respect for the 'in-laws', let me tell you this- The children my son eventually has will also be very much my business. I will love them just as I do my son.
Grandchildren are the business of their Grandparents- and in many states these days they are legally getting 'Grandparent rights'- visitations, and in many cases getting custody. It is important not to dismiss them and recognize their love as valid. If they weren't concerned- what kind of grandparents would they be?
Let me reiterate I am not against anyone raising their children in a home where the parents have such subject beliefs- AGAIN... just keep your mind just as open as you wish the world to be towards you.
I've got 2 kids myself. As long as the children are taught to be open minded, and be accepting of those who are diffrent then they will make the choice that is right for them when the time is right
I have five children. I was raised by fairly straight laced parents. My mother and her parents used to take me to church, a Baptist church, you think Catholosism is harsh? At least they are allowed to dance, play cards, and go to movies. My father and his parents are Catholic, altough my father is not a practicing Catholic. I lost my faith so long ago, that I can't tell you when it happened. Not any one incedent happened, it was a build up over the years. My children are all different. Like night and day. I have one child who is on here, she is very gothic. I have to conform in order to work where I work, at least during the day. My youngest son now lives with his father and has the opportunity to go to "confirmation" classes. I encourage it, even though I prefer not to believe in the hierarchy of organized religion. He asked me if he moved home if he could continue these classes. I told him most certainly. He knows that I would prefer not to attend services, and that I will drop him off and be there for him when the services are over. I will not stop any of my children from finding out for themselves what is going to work for them. I will also answer any questions that they have, about any of the religions that they are interested in. (I too did a lot of church youth group in my early teens.) In fact, even though I have felt, thought and believed the way I do today, when the school my children were going to decided that they weren't going to teach the kids about Hannukah because of some bigeted parents, I protested. I didn't think that it was fair or right to teach just one religious belief just because nobody in that school practiced judiism. They all have a right to be informed, about any and all religions and practices. (Within reason, I wouldn't let them watch an animal sacrifice or anything like that at a young age.) But they should have the respect of being human beings to be given the facts about any religion that they want to know about. Goth (in my opinion) is not a religion, it is a lifestyle. And I do agree with everybody else, that if the children are loved, cared for, clean, fed, housed, and educated, just because you wear black clothes, dark make-up and dye your hair different colors, doesn't make you a bad parent. If you are doing everything else right, I wouldn't worry about it. If we all raise our children to have an open mind, eventually, we will weed out the close minded people and have a truly free and maybe even peaceful world to live in. It will never happen in our natural lives, but we can insure the future by teaching our children with the hopes that they will continue the lesson.
Sorry about the long post, just needed to get that all out of my system.
In response to imagesinwords I do see your point and I agree but where i live the popular style is what I have described and the Goth culture is the more shy but I do see what you mean and yes it is up to the parents and in the end the childs desision what they turn out like
this comment is going to be long.. i didnt read the other comments cuz i want to put my own opinion like it is and if what i say was said befor..sorry..
in my eyes you can raise your children however you want as long as you treat them in a good way and as long as you make sure they get the basic education.. you should always keep in mind that as you not like your parents your children might not be like you... make sure that all options stay open for them and that they can become whatever they want. another important things is that you give them all the love you have...
me, myself am going to raise my children in a conventional way, but give them all i can and support their interests as much as i can. i was raised in a conventional way too and im glad that my parents did so. i am not gothic, that means i dont dress like it although i think like it and i guess it would be not good for children to know too early what this is all about. even worse would be if they knew about the vampiric things...
this is only what i think... im not supposed to judge no one.. every one should take care of his kids like he or she wants... so i guess you should do what you think is right for you
i personally think that the way you raise your kid can influence him, and the atmosphere will effect him, but most kids now a days are seeing everything in the world before we did and they are faster then their generation, so whatever way you raise your kids is upto you in the end, if it was around vampires or elvis presley... it is upto you but know that one days your kids will come to rebell either with you or against you... just pray it is not against you..... alll the best and enjoy your time with your kids cause sometimes you find kids with no parents and were forbidden of the word mom and dad....

i feel that you are doing a great job as a mother and many parents dont let there kids be them...mine tryed to make my grow up how they wanted and we ended up hating each other. so i feel you are a great mother and dont let any one tell you different
i think youre right you shouldnt judge someont based on their choices. i act immature around friends but that doesnt mean that i am does it? i skydive i hunt and i set up pyro shows at my house on a monthly basis. i can be serious enough to do all these things safely but tell this to people who dont know me and theyll wonder why i'm not dead yet.
Children should not be raised the way the parent wants but the way the child wants to be
Kurisu,
How, exactly, if you could clarify this please, does an inexperienced child know what it needs for it's development and future security?
my fiance and i are both on this site and are both goth and both into vamps we are raising our children to be open minded as well though some people think that we are doing something wrong we see it like this.... we work our children are fed clothed in school and clean so they can shove their ignorant judgemental predjudices up their bum and leave us alone about our choice its none of their business anyways
My opinion is that the person outcome depends onthe enviroment they see everyday in their life. 1 out of 10 kids might be able to not be attached to the enviroment around them, but most are.Thats my opinion.
i feel that if you are a vampire and have kids then it is good to raise them in the vampire ways...i wish that i was raised in the vampire ways as a child...then it wouldnt be so hard now
my thought on this issue is as long as the parent(s) keep their children open minded and let them explore in diffrent religions i believe it will not harm them and they will learn to except your beliefs
STABB666
Have you ever asked the young how they want or think the future should be or the way they want it to be because i bet basicaly every one of them has an opinion
STABB666
well im close to 17 so obviously i'm in my teens and am intitled to my own opinion
People who ask you if you are raising your kids to follow your culture.. needs to be slapped...
Like you said openminded is what they will end up to be.
i think that children over all get up their own ideas, espcially when they grow up, thus i dont think that you rise them gothic actually
just make sure you allow your children to realize that your way of life is not the only way of life (as many of you have been saying) ...it is important not only in terms of the gothic lifestyle, but also in many other realms such as politics and religion (both things i'm not really allowed to go into depth about, so i wont lol)
Kurisu,
Yes, that is exactly the point I am making.
You, at seventeen, are no longer a child in the terms of knowing your own opinions on matters which reach beyond the bounds of neccessity, but we are talking of raising children from birth into one specific culture, so what of your opinion on that?

STABB, you bring up super points. Of course let kids be involved, but in the youngest of ages- they haven't the maturity level to choose in such major life decisions.
It's up to the parents to hopefully teach them and give them options within boundaries suited to their specific age.
As far as a vampiric path- I am not even sure a child would be able to understand the depths of that at a very young age. And if you are into blood rituals and you involve your child - you have got a serious chance of them talking to others about it and having the government all over you like white on rice. There is a shitload to consider as far as this goes.
A vampiric path- that is one that would have to come little by little over a long period of time. Gothic? that's just a style anyway, no decisions to be made there. Do you like these clothes? Do you like this music? Not too hard for children to understand those simple questions, and no need to wait till they reach a certain age to start asking.
But something to ponder, if you are speaking of a religion or spiritual path that you have to stop and think if your children are old enough to comprehend it- is it appropriate for children AT ALL? How about you as an adult do what you have to do- and talk to your kids about that when they are way older- at least enough to swallow it with a mature comprehension.
Let me say I am not knockin' the path at all. I am quite the liberal person and am all for people walking the roads they feel comfy on. But these people of course being those with a more devloped mind. As long as you as a parent are showing them to not be judgemental and you are giving them the knowledge little by little as they grow- there will probably be no surprises later.
my kids r not old enuf to know the difference yet but when they r old enuf to know the difference i will tell them about me and my beliefs and if they so choose they may follow me or walk with me if they don't they r still my kids
I agree 100% about not pushing your kids into something. I don't have kids....but I do know that when I was younger (even now) My parents push me into the path they want me to take. They are Chistians....I don't want that path..but I'm forced on it anyway...... Cause I'm the only "Goth" in the family..they are ashamed of me...soo what? Sorry, I just thought I would comment on it. ^_^
Stabb you bring up great points again. Even children older then 13 need guidance. It is not to rule over them, but to make sure they know the desicions they make impact their lives. Until you have to have responsibility you are immature. Even at my age (23) I can be immature and selfish. I think everyone can be.
If you give children the right to know why you make a desicion for them, or ask their opinion and educate them on why you are doing something, I think you are helping to create a great platform for their mental well being. I think that if you give children the reins too young, and let them do as they please with no input or regard that they are not yet informed adults, then you are just setting them up for failure. Look at the spoiled children out there that never had to make a choice or learn to take care of themselves or others, and now are the "divas" of the world thinking they don't need to contribute to gain from society.
Sorry for the rant, I just woke up and all. ;)
Due the rage I went through upon my mate's death.. my children unfortunately saw the loss of control and my true essence. Need less to say they have the unique perspective of having seen one of those things that 'go bump in the night'. They have also learned that the general population doesn't take you seriously telling people your are related to a vampyre. I have never tried to influence their beliefs on the matter. Rather allow them to grow as their own personalities and beliefs dictate. I will however, answer their questions as they come to mind.
