If you were given the choice would you choose to live forever or die and why?
Live forever only if I could be strong and healthy and not ugly like a Dorian Gray pic.
if I had a lot to live for and could find ways to make eternity interesting, then I might be tempted to live forever. but honestly, it would be terrible to live forever and spend all that time bored and/or alone
i would be immortal because i would save lives and punish the gulity
A thread like this was around before but so be it.
A lot of folks here are going to say or want to say Immortality, though that would not be a good thing if it became reality because population is kind of big problem at the moment, and if no human died then there will not be any room for more....well unless the solution became nuking 3/4 of the world but that would just destroy the natural resources.
There is an overpopulation, yes. But there are such things as natural selection... disasters and illnesses. If going in the right direction, this overpopulation issue could be remedied. The world would be thriving highly on altruism. Utilitarianism would be the background philosophy. Any good in that? Breaches of civil rights and all that. There would have to be a gradual transition into any new world era. With the end of the Mayan calendar, hopefully that is where we are headed. The Quest for Immortality.
Mortality there is no reason to outlive all of your family, friends
sure it would be great to see what life is like in 50, 100, 200 etc years but to live that long and hide, move around so ppl don't get suscipious that you are not aging
Mortal. Who really has a desire to start over again every time a friend dies and moves onto another place. (If that is what you choose to believe.) I would be jealous that I was left here whilst they were moving along the chain of life.
Alternatively your friend dies and there is nothing there after that and yet you are stuck in the same place. Repeating the same things just on a different day another century. Could you really live a life of ground hog cause that is how it would become after a few centuries. Again the jealous side would kick with knowing people are experiencing something new for the first time and yet you have already tasted, done it, experienced it all.
I would either want to be friends in the next life or not at all. Just dust and bones.
immortality because it would be cool to be there where historical events took place.
Ha! the common excuse here for staying mortal..."being alone", "outliving family" if these people were actually given the choice for real then 9/10 maybe 8/10 would go for it.
You will only be alone if you avoid human contact and as for family, one can just get a new one, after all, family is more than just blood relation and easily replaceable. Boredom only gets you if you let it, one can find many ways to stay entertained especially if you have an eternity. One can only do so much in their short lives afterall.
Population is a big problem yes and natural selection tries to do its job but humanity being the adaptable cockroaches they are, always finds ways to survive and its not amusing. Once population becomes severe, the governments will have to dish out "unethical" solutions and mark my words, it will be unethical, I believe I once mentioned the issues in china where a woman was forcibly sterilized after having a second child though the first child died but rules were rules.
Who wants to live forever ? The beautiful thing about death is that it makes us appreciate living.
over population is an issue and medicine fights natural selection, I'm a fan of treating common ailments like the common cold and a broken leg but anything that severly handicaps anyone shouldn't be treated to the point where they can reproduce
what has failed is with the advances in medical science we might live much longer than we used to but still reproduce almost as much and now it's easier and children are more likely to survive, you don't need to have 10 kids because you're expecting to lose a few before adulthood and a few more not long after
death is scary, I agree in that if someone gave you the option to live forever or told you your relative death date then you'd choose to live forever out of fear and anxiety associated with death
there is a reason why the will to live is the strongest one in the human body and why if someone shot those of you who are sitting at home bored and lonely right now would still fight to live if someone broke into your house and tried to kill you
n *I would opt for figurative Immortality, which means to be immortalized once I have passed on, having left such an impression on others that I become Folk Legend.
hmmm interesting question. I THINK I would choose immortality in the form of existing as a spirit on this plane rather than physical immortality.
Immortality... As reckless as I am in this mortal life, it might be a good idea... Then again, my life insurance would mean nothing and unless I was financially immortal, I wouldn't even be in the position to take advantage of all that immortality could possibly offer -- except, maybe more jury duty or something.
I think Walt Disney went the best route with that; failed cryogenics and all.
I choose immortality so as to have all the time needed to truly make a difference in the world. And as for the overpopulation issue the question was merely if I were to choose Immortality or Mortality. So I was not assuming this question applied to ALL of humanity. Just more along the lines of if an individual were to come across this as a choice to be made then what would they choose. And as for leaving behind friends or family, well the way I see it none of these are permanent relationships to begin with. You never really know how long you will have to spend with someone anyways. So I would just enjoy the time I had with those I cared about and make sure they were well protected and safe. And just keep in mind that for them nothing is forever. Even with immortality I'm sure there would be a way to end your life if you were determined enough. I don't think there are any true guarantees in life.
I would choose immortality, until the day that I had learned all that I could,I would want to be immortal due to my thirst for knowledge
Honestly, I would prefer to pass onto the next life...
Far more surprises as well as opportunities to do things differently!
I love living like today could be my last day, keeps me motivated to make the very best of everything! Otherwise, I would have no motivation, because I knew I wasn't going anywhere.
Also, I would prefer to NOT witness the decline of humanity and it's horrifying existence as it molds itself into a self destructive machine that will ultimately eliminate everything in its path...I would like to still focus more on the little acts of kindness and the few and far between inspiring moments that keep me grateful to be alive!
Keeps it interesting! *Smiles*
Love everyone's reply to this one! Great topic!! Thank you!!

Fine, if we're meant to be honorable -- I would use my immortality to protect people... As long as the dudes in the lab cats didnt come running to have their test-fest with me
theirs a few options and advantages that each have but i will think and pick immortality because of the fact im unstoppable unless i hit the sunlight or steak ed laughs
Thing is, I could never allow myself intimacy with any mortal. To watch them go through their cycle of life and die, would be heartbreaking.... every time.
We already have reincarnation. How much more Immortal can one get? lol
Immortality. Quite honestly, the idea of death scares me. You don't realize how short life really is until you start thinking about it. I fear for how I will die.
I would choose immortality as there are so many things I'd like to do & places I'd like to go.
Immortality...to love and protect all I can. Life does change in an instant, and I agree with previous posts... Life has no guarantee, no manual and no end of service date...
I'd like to say immortal, existing as an astral vampire. But to be honest I have enough trouble finding reasons to endure the life I've got now. I hope that all states of being are transitory until I dissolve into infinite oneness.
immortality cuz the life im living now isnt how i thought it would have turn out if i could live forever it would give me so many chances to break out of a shell and b able to live and maybe make a diff in the world
depend on the quality of the Life everlasting; depends on the reason for the death?
twas it noble, with reason or cause?
or pointless?
Live forever like a vampire im already a sanguine smiles
I believe the biggest themes of life are put into the best focus when held up against the very sharp light of mortality. ~Mitch Albom
Mortality does, upon reflection, makes one to enjoy and take instant gratification of what life has to offer. Although unpredictable, illness-plagued, sufferance of loneliness and effects of the status systems cause one to fall into negative states of mind, Mortality is what I am faced with everyday. Those who have been hit by illnesses and the ones with suicidal thoughts know this only too well. Some live with thoughts of what they wish to achieve the next day. Others, if they will live to see the next day.
Immortality is what we are all trying to achieve. Be it literally or figurative. There are many mortals who have achieved Immortality through their works and beliefs. The Idea of our bodies never regenerating is tantalising. Watching everyone around perish would be a downside. How long can I hide? Where will I work? After all's said and done, I will have to pick Immortality with the gifts of Mortality. Having to work for survival, socialising, laughing, crying, the full spectrum of human emotions... Just to feel something... Would be enough. Yes, Immortality, it is. :)
I would choose to die. I would want to experience the after life.
I think I would rather die too. One is not supposed to see their children pass .
I'd choose Immortality over being a mortal. Reasons? There's a whole world out there which awaits us. One or two mere lifecycles just ain't enough to see and experience everything that deserves to be experienced.
-William
THE FLESH IS MORTEL,THE SOUL IS IMORTAL,YOU LIVE FOREVER ANYWAY,JUST NOT IN THE FLESH.SPIRIT IS MUCH MORE POWERFUL.
That's a tough question, but if I had to choose, I would choose immortality. Why? Simply because knowing I could continue to help others through out history is appeasing to me. I would find the abilities available to me over time would greatly improve, and I would be able to reach more and more people. Thus achieving my greatest dreams of providing the extra support people, villages and societies need.
I would also choose immortality as i feel that i need to find out something but what that something is is difficult to explain but if i get the chance to find out then i may have to be around for a very long time.
This one is a no brainer for me-
Immortality. It's is our biological imperative to survive.
It wouldn't be easy, but I feel pretty confident that I would adapt really quickly.
-Josephus...
that suggests going out, possibly as the victor, of some sort of conflict, battle, or war, seems like a nice way to go
I would choose mortality for myself. I'm very connected to those I call family and it would drive me insane to have to watch them grow old and die. And the problem with sharing immortality with them would be that I would most likely find new people I consider family over the years. And they would find those they want to add. And so on. I've already faced dying twice so it doesn't scare me. That said, I would be terrified to watch my children die. No parent should have to face that.
Immortality - I am no stranger to loss pain or price that comes with it.
IM choosing mortalty, SO i can find my self with my human favors, i dont think id survive as a immortality,
Immortality, even without eternal youth (though hopefully I'm at least healthy looking) would give me so much time to learn, complete my interest, experience so much without fear.
I would definitely have to say immortality... to live on and see how the would changes and get to be a part of it for such a long time would be such I gift....
I would like immortality so I can learn new things and travel anywhere in this world and beyond.
I would choose immortality so I can explore all corners of the world and continue my life's mission to help others.
i would want to die..so i could see my loved one that already passed on
I would choose immortality so I could help mankind, watch over my family and cuz I want to see all of it and try as much as my immortality would allow
The soul is immortal, why would anyone want the body to be? The concept is like asking a foetus for it's opinion about its emmenant birth.
Immortality. I would choose immorality because I would be able to learn forever and see the world change.
Immortality and I will say no more at the risk of sounding like sanctimonious douchebag.
Mortality, Immortality is painful if you're always around mortals. You would get bored of life (Alucard from Hellsing) and sooner or later possibly put yourself into a dormant mode. You would also never properly experience death, which all things should encounter.
It is all about entropy. That could be ultimately where we are headed. I feel that any immortal represents decreased entropy. Though the entropy of a being can decrease, it can only do so by increasing the entropy of an aspect of that being by the same amount. There will always be an equal and opposite reaction in this quest for immortality. Longevity at the expense of the sanity of the mind. Boredom, becoming jaded, growing cruel... These are just increased entropy while we attempt to reduce it by slowing death.
I would choose to live for ever because there are so much things I want to do with my life and so much that I want to accomplish.
@lordess
I like me a little chaos.
It seems that you think maybe only a narcissistic masochist would want immortality.
Because of the extended life and the increase in disorder we would go shatbit crazy?
I guess maybe it's like being up on a 5 day caffeine (wink, wink) bender.
By the 5th day you feel great but the hallucinations are so bad it is too much to bear.
Exactly. An immortal being like a vampire, for instance, would have increased awareness and knowledge, superior skills at survival, and tougher defense mechanisms. They are more than a mere mortal. So when there is an imbalance in their system, these various states of mind act as symptoms, sort of a signal, if you will, that something could be going wrong in their system. So even if there is decreased entropy, entropy would be increasing elsewhere. :) Or maybe it is all full entropy, but we manage to find a way to reverse the whole process, thus creating an immortal.
I would still roll the dice.
If you don't choose immortality then you know the result.
Nothingness, but if you roll the dice, then you at the very least increase the probability of a desired outcome.
And really the biological imperative to live is miraculous in itself.
I can't think of group that increases in order before decreasing into the dark abyss of entropy, other than life itself.
Maybe call it negentropy.
I would totally roll the dice.
I think it comes down to how long you can enjoy life?
If something drives you to keep living, choose immortality,if there is no driving force, choose mortality
There is a form of immortality, it is obtained by becoming an icon.
As George Carlin said Paraphrase."I believe we all go out in a Hum, and ones life is spent building up our Hum."
Easiest question to answer ever. Immortality. No hesitation.
Mortality is a gift for souls to feel and experience things of the physical plane. It is for the curiosity of spirit.
Immortality is of the soul and will exist as long as energy is constant.
Immortal as in an extended lifespan?
A turtle continues to be a turtle, and a human will continue to be human. It matters not how much time is given. :)
I'd live forever just to be constantly mystified by how everything changes. And every country would be radically different every few decades as well. I wouldn't worry about losing all friends and family members, though it would be very sad, we do get over things in time.
I'd appreciate being immortal, as I love history and would be able to see time continue to march on.
On the other hand, the continued ugliness of life would drive me insane.
mortality. no one is really promised tomorrow, not even immortals. i think that i would rather life go on with or without me. there was a time when i would have said... if given the choice, immortality. i wanted to stay young and never grow old. but where is the beauty in that? to always roam alone through time... no thanks. i'm happy in the here and now. and the unexpectedness of tomorrow.
i look at it this way i have both . i am mortal but i when i my body is gone i will become immortal . and this is not because of me but because of how and who i believe in . death is real but more real is that the soul never dies that is why i say i have both . now even tho you could hurt this body my soul will just move on to a higher level . and i will be free to be what i am . right now i am only a lost soul looking forward to what i will have in the here after . does not mean that i dont like this life but the things and what i am dont matter as much . For death ended back at 0 and life started from A.D. So when you think about it this way we are all both but only thos that believe will go on living . if you want to know more just message me . or if you just want to chat .
Immortality....to see places and do things I didn't have a chance to do in my mortal life
Immortality is only cool if you can travel the stars, staying here would get really lame when all other life dies or the mantle becomes molten.
well life here will not be as most think but i do believe it will end with fire . but then the earth will not be destroyed i believe it will be renewed . and into a much better place were all can live in peace . no buildings no weather , no fighting , no wars , and no weapons
life is precious so i take mortality because immortality can die just the same way hit the sun and your done!
to watch all you Love die?
mortality, easy.
{was gutted when my Mum died and my Gran before her.}
if i had a choice i would choose to be immortal. iwould love to see the ones that tortured me die. is that weird?
immortality but with some super powers thrown in there too to make it manageable and interesting.
Only god is immortal, others have to die one day
He will never offer immortality to any one
you seem very close minded good sir.
immortality comes in many forms, there are many roads to the path of immortality so to speak but if by choice i got to choose of a definitive end/ending to my soul i would choose reincarnation so each body life i lived would be of a mortal one but my soul would live on in a immortal existence of trying on these different shoes
Even as I pointed out in an earlier post.
Immortality can be feasible, though not in the sensational way it is usurped by religious devotees. All it can be is when one leaves such an impression while alive that they are honored, and become a cultural icon. So in a sense any exceptional person can thrive for immorality.
It would be nice to live for a very long time, in medical research, the scientists goal is to improve our lives by making us live longer. If we live longer lives, it would be a bad thing, because population will increase higher, speed up global warming, greater demand for food, increased deforestation, and we would blow every resource of this planet until we run ourselves out of resources. One thing is, the Earth will not last forever, because the sun will expand into a red giant and engulf the Earth. If we could be immortal, are we going to have advanced technology to move to another planet, before we run out of vital resources here on Earth?
hard question to answer as everyone has their own ideas on how long they wish to live for
If I could chose at which age I would die at I would love to live long enough for my son to achieve his educational goals, have his own children and be a grandmother to those children for at least a decade and see what changes are in store for us in the next 60 to 70 years
Would I love to be older then a couple centuries no as those I love will not be around even though their children, grandchildren or great grandchildren will be
The average Age of Human Death due to accident, untreatable disease, disaster would be 7-800 years.
Seems reasonable to me, given we will soon be able to clone most body parts and cure most cancers.
However, the can never and thus will never be achieved until we solve the energy and pollution crisis. We are already in conflict over Oil and the Gas pipeline in the Ukraine, what? You thought it was about voting?
No no no, the EU are building a pipeline and Gas extraction units in the Black Sea, naturally the Ruskies are a little annoyed as they are currently the sole providers of gas.
Neither side will win, children need to grow up or face Wrath.
10% of world GDP should be devoted to this and then, and only then can we consider Longevity.
This is such a hard question. I believe that once you die, that's it. No afterlife. In that itself there is a relief.
To answer your question, there are so many pros and cons on both sides, but I'd have to say mortality. Knowing I only have a limited amount of time makes me appreciate every moment and stage of my life. I look back at my childhood and have fond memories. Everything from watching He-Man, playing with my G.I. Joes and when my parents took me to drive-in movies and McDonald's for a Happy Meal. I look back at my years of teenage angst. My first love, my first beer, and my first internet experience. Now I look at my adulthood and remember all the stages that lead up to my life today.
Most certainly, mortality is the pick for me.
Immortality. I would like to see what becomes of humanity. I don't believe being immortal would be nearly as depressing as many think it would. I suppose for people who cannot be happy now being immortal would probably be a bad idea but for someone who is generally happy, immortality would be fine.
Eh, I think I am happy as it is now. Ill live til the fullest extent, and eventually pass, then be reborn. I dont really see the need to be immortal because I never fully die since I am reborn. And well, I am sure the world is bound to fail so there for no use in seeing it do so its depressing as is, so Ill see it in my next life and live it then
One benefit to being immortal over repetitively being reborn would be the wealth you could accumulate with immortality.
I'd want to die. I imagine as an immortal it would get painful watching the people you come to love die while you still live...
Mortality gives you an appreciation for life that immortality can not compete with.
Immortality with periods of voluntary intermittent memory loss.
Wish there was an edit button to edit an earlier post.
Really its very situational for me. I guess if I could ever find someone who was willing to love me unconditionally and they were immortal then I would want to be immortal with them. However if they were not then I would hope to die after they did. Reason I want to go after is so that they will not have to endure the loss of their love. I would rather bear that pain then have the one I love even get a hint of it.
to me we are all immortal just we shed our outer bodies when we take on our immortality . we say we can die in this world and leave it but I say its not so much you leave it you are just not on the same plain some day I beleve
Immortality because you would have the time to do everything you ever wanted
Forever is a long time and it would get boring the same life forever and losing all your friends and loved ones. I would rather just keep coming back w/ a brand new different life (reincarnation) However I would actually rather be a spirit and not stuck in this shitty would in a meat sack...
it all depends on what type of immortality were talking about for me
if i simply lived for ever never aged couldn't die but was a regular old human then yea ill pass....lol all it takes is to get hit by a truck or a plain crash then im in a world of hurt and a very long time of healing and if the wrong ppl found out im immortal in that sense hello science experiment for the rest of my life XD
if i was like a vampire ie: like angel or spike from buffy or true blood one of those with super speed/ strength
can jump long distances regenerate my wounds
then i would defiantly pick that and people say u would have to watch your family die....welll id either turn them if they wish or spend there last days with them giving them anything they wanted and once there all gone
id never be alone i would have the whole world as my play thing but the main reason id choose it above all else
is to watch the world unfold untill it finally ends however long that takes....and the fact i cant be killed easily it would be easy to accomplish
IMMORTALITY ..
I never lived so, i want immortality so that i can live afterwards and for long that i forgot that i before had not lived
immortality well life is short as a mortal so if I live forever I have more to do everything I wanted to do in life not just set mere goals to accomplish but go beyond the traditional check list of things I want to do before I die.
I would want both. Here's why
I would want immortality because I would love to see people die that was rude and didn't do anything positive at all. Or people that was mean to me or I didn't like the person.
I would want mortality because I don't want to live forever and my mother, sisters, brother, uncles, grandmother and my grandfather die and I will be the only one left and that would be depressing. I don't want to live for ever and they cant.
I would choose mortality but only after i'd lived to see everything that could be seen. I want to choose mortality because after you see everything you can life would get boring and you would want to start anew.
