i think that the things you do to others will be returned to you. if you hurt or harm others for your pleasure you will be harmed. if you defend you nothing bad will happen in return.

if you help other people. you will get help when you need it most. its like that i think. thats karma for me. i experienced that in my life

Well, if has to do with if you think you are a bad person or not. If you belive you are a bad person, bad things will come, because you welcome them sub-consciensly.

Yeah, I thing if you send out bad energy, it will come back to you. I dont think you have to think that you are a bad person or not but that does have an effect. In my experience, my ex did me wrong and the same exact thing happened to him and he apoligized sooo much after he realized how it felt...karma is sweet, i didnt even have to do anything!

Karma is all about balance...You intenet to do bad it will come back to you and the same goes for doing good...It is much more complex than just that, but yes do unto others as it will come back to you eventually...

Like Enigma and others have said, it is a balance...and doing intentional harm to anyone will have it come back to you.... as to when and how, up to karma to decide.

According to the Hindu religion Karma is built up over the course of your past lives and everytime you come back it is up to you to become a "better" person by doing good......, all the bad karma keeps you coming back and if it gets bad enough you come back as an animal or a lower life form

That is very true. It's like the saying:

What goes up, must come down.

You can apply that to karma. I think it's good to try and be a good person because then good things happen to you.

For a concise answer about karma I recommend reading anything about Buddahism. Especially Zen Buddahism.

The idea of karma comes from this spiritual belief - although I personally think its tenets stem back to ancient goddess religions.

I see Karma as, "For every good thing you do, one good thing and three bad things will happen to you" that way, you do good and hope for the good to outwiegh the bad, but in reality, it never does, you get the short in of the stick but you thought you did good because one good thing happened for every good thing you did! :D maybe I'm just cynical though....lol

why do people say the wrong will be avenged by time? who says whats wrong? you? i dont think so, you dont know anything about right and wrong! neither do i! no one does, people are just raised that way and so they think thats the way it is. we need to get around that. otherwise we miss out on what the supposed "wrongs"have to offer! its all in the minds eye. what about the rights we do being repaid? the world is not balanced, we only think it is. what goes around keeps going around, the wanting we have for things to be avenged is made up into karma, the wanting is what makes us see it, not the facts.

If you cause pain or suffering to someone who does not desire or deserve it, then I find that to be morally wrong. I'm not saying you will suffer the same wrong doings you caused them, but you will always suffer for what you have done to them. Whether it is guilt or the fact that one day you realize that you have to inflict pain on someones life in order to gain joy for yours, you will feel emptyness, and that is worse than any cut or word.

exactly Misfitchick, I do not see murder as necessarily wrong, in all cases, and so how can one say it is wrong period? morals are indiviually based and many overlap in a society but it does not make right and wrong. So if morals are rellative, how can you say that the wrongs will be avenged when wrong by your standards are different than someone elses? the only balance is made balanced by our minds.

karma in sanskrit means action

it implies that every action causes its memory to be contained in the being, the soul or the personality, when one identifies with the action

karma is about self identifying with an action

that is what makes it stick

it is also about expectation, and the concept that one is the doer

it can also be viewed as sending out energy

whose trajectory is boomeranglike

when one accepts this energy instead of throwing it back again by reacting as mopst often one does to phenomenon, it becomes neutralised, burned is the exact word, awareness is one of the things that burns karma, the other is love

hence the two spritual paths of intellect/knowledge and devotion

there are many kinds of karma, some that will take effect in this life some that will need many lives to take effect

all hexes and workings black or white as the case may be are only selectively drawing out karma to manifest in this lifetime

this is also the basis of magic, it is a science of karmic manipulation
nothing that happens can be from another, one is doomed or blessed to be responsible for oneself,

thus the only law is of responsibility which when broken down is the ability to respond

till every karma is burned, be it favourable or unfavourable, one has to be born into the world of death

evolution of the soul is about burning karmas, old sould are ones that have been around the circuit more times, and so are more karmic in disposition.

every thing that happens is a result of an action, when one is aware that this is ones energy coming back one can with equanimity accept and that karma is burned

every second one is being loaded with karma, every time one says i it is karma

karma is not the act so much as the putting of i before the act that makes it ones act

identification with an action, person, possession makes it stick

it is not so much a moral concept as a reality picture
karma is actually a neutral thing, as good and not so good(if there are indeed such things) karma cause the soul to be born again

there is a saying , that death is not the thing to be feared , birth is

there is much more of course to this than these sentences could ever convey.

this is the MO of reality and that means everything

this post is trying to stay within the scope of this thread

Karma is often translated as "action," but a better interpretation would be "reaction." Buddhist philosophy teaches that everything is the result of cause and effect...the fact that you and I are communicating via this forum topic right now is the result of a series of causes and effects that began at the beginning of time. Karma basically states that if you do, think or say bad things, you will experience bad results. Conversely, good thoughts, words and deeds will produce more favorable effects. Someone earlier stated that their idea of karma is "what goes around comes around." That's a good, simple way to look at it. The main thing to keep in mind is that everything you do, think or say is a cause that will produce an effect appropriate to that cause.

People from the west often misunderstand Karma as being some large, insubstantial "godlike" thing that will punish you for your sins. In reality, it is nothing of the sort.

If you are running over a frozen lake to rescue a basket of kittens, and the ice breaks and you drown, that's Karma. Not because you were bad, but because Karma is the result of your actions. You ran over the thin ice, it breaks = Karma.

You do something bad, people don't like you as much, you lose your friends, your self respect, and your inner peace = also Karma.

You do something kind, it makes you a less wretched person = karma, even if you never recieve any other reward.

bad things happen in your life, as do good things. its (karma) about who are your true friends are, so that you can share the good things in life with them and the bad. and no matter what if they are a true friend, the lengths that they will go and the gauntlets they will put themselves through for your sake, Is karma to me. a man without friends is a man without ends.

Nope I think the theory of Karma itself is a flawed one. Usually it is to try to enforce an ethic or way of action to lead people into acting in unison towards whomever was clever enough to direct those people's moralities.

Well i have to agree with Lestat on this one completely ... After all ive been through in my life the Abuse .. the demeaning... the Negative Nasty people coming into my LIfe.. No matter how hard i try to be nice and Caring and show the Love and support to All i know sticking my neck out and being a true friend all of their times of need ive to this day to see them get anything they deserve. They all Live life to the fullest ... and I constantly get hurt ! Maybe i havent waited long enough to watch with glee and meanwhile im becoming more of a negative Person...But funny i still wouldnt wish anything Bad to happen to any of them cause thats just me but ive never seen anyone get whats coming to them as All are putting it! They Just gloat and pushg the knife in deeper... Ah well..

well for Karma to work I suppose there would have to be some "All Knowing" diety to be marking down everything that you have done. Or are we talking the type that everything you do sends a consmic whiplash through space and time and is eventually rebounded back directly at you?

and I guess that would have something to do with destiny or fate same thing.

But the thought of destiny and something being "Fated" to happen is a shit concept. It would pretty much mean that every single action we took in our life was pre-destined and such as that would make the whole concept of Free will an illusion.

And if that was true then there would be no point to live becuase we'd all just be spiraling towards an inevitable end.

Fuck that.

No Fate except that which you create.

Karma is unfair and a bitch.

It works positive for the lucky ones and negative for the unlucky.

Oh yeah luck is a bitch as well and it exists.

I believe in cause and effect.

If you cause someone pain, the effects will enevitably return to you, even if by a roundabout manner, because they will remember that you did a 'bad thing' and this will effect their subsequent conversations about you and reactions to you in the future.

If you cause love in a person, so too will you reap the benefits of that love, for as it is an emotion of joy, so will that person express it towards you and others, even subconciously.

We reflect what is done to us back into the flow, mostly without considering how it will come back to us in the end, but as waves in the sea grow, so do life events.

Consideration of others feelings, of knowing etiquette, is a way to avoid sending out negative impulses.

We can't all be perfect in how we act. We get angry, confused and feel hurt. Often an instinctual reaction is to say "fuck 'em". But afterwards, do we always still feel as angry as we did?

Those who can't let go of it seek revenge and in cases, vengence is warranted, but sometimes, a perception of why that person hurt you, can change your attitude entirely.

I agree with Godthing - - Karma is sort of like the self-fulfilling prophecy theory IMHO, if you attach meaning or "karmic justice" to every positive or negative thing that happens to you, well then Karma exists for you.

Life is what you perceive it to be, etc....

I have mixed feelings on this issue, on one hand, I agree with Xander, I see good people sometimes with nothing and bad people seem to have everything. That used to make me angry and confused because I'm one of those like deathnitegirl, I give and give and never get. I'm ALWAYS nice, but seem to always get shitted on.... But anyway, someone once told me that though it may appear that the bad people have everything and that they are happy, its just that... apperance, an illusion. They in fact aren't happy at all, thats why they are so bad. Now, I've also seen it the other way, my father is one of the good guys....I mean really good guys. My whole life I've seen people, friends, family, friends of friends, you name it. He is there, would take his shirt off if you needed one. He monthly sends donations to wildlife, redcross, evangelist, Veterans, Women and childred shelters....the list goes on. Anyway, he has never asked for anything in return and thankfully has never had to turn to anyone for help. Hell, he even raised my 4 brothers and I all by himself when my mom split. But back to the point of Karma....here's what I think is his Karma is.....He has had about 6 heartattacks in the past 2 years and had major quadrupel bypass surgury. And he still lives and smiles everyday... still there for us. You know how many people have 1 heartattack and that's it....game over. I think he has been so good and his Karma keeps him here, keeps him going... So sorry this is soooo long. See my confusion with Karma?

I beleive the word "Karma" is being misused or atleast misunderstood here.

Karma means a balance in all things.
Karma means that the good and bad in your life will be equal, meaning that if something good happens to you then something bad will happen also.

However western philosophies (mainly brought about by religion such as Christianity) says what we do to others will affect us....this has been associated with Karma but it is not what Karma means.

Karma is the balance of all things,
Karma is your destiny (what will be will be).

As discussed before, Karma means "action" or "reaction." Cause and effect. It is not fate, or destiny. We each make our own destiny by every thought, word and deed. It is not something that is done to you...you do it to yourself. There is no universal "judge" keeping score...it is simply cause and effect. Many of the comments seem to relate to the material, but often the effects of karma are internal...emotional, spiritual, or whatever. Just because a perceived "bad" person has "everything" doesn't mean karma doesn't clobber them emotionally. I saw a couple of comments portraying karma as a "balance" between good and bad. That is actually more similar to the concept of samsara...illusory earthly existence that contains both suffering and non-sufferning. And yes, "My Name is Earl" is a very good show...hilarious in fact...just keep in mind that part of the joke is that Earl doesn't really understand what karma is.

SatinMist is correct. Volition and intent are integral parts of karmic energy. Good deeds performed to make yourself look good are not really good deeds and are likely to generate negative karma rather than the positive effect one might be anticipating.

Yes, I think Shinedemigod had the clearest and most concise description of what Karma is.

Personally I believe what goes around comes around as well. However I also believe that if you do more bad than good in your life you will be reincarnated so you can atone for your actions from a previous lifetime.

Stewie...as I mentioned before, it seems many are equating money or other material gain as being "good." People who commit bad deeds may, indeed, gain materially sometimes, but there are other, more important ways that bad things may happen to them...emotionally, spiritually, psychologically...

If you're looking at karma in a strictly materialistic way, you are missing the point and not seeing the true nature of the concept.

Actually, "My Name is Earl" shows Karma perfectly. The guy was an asshole to his employee, so the employee punched him. He was cheating on his wife, and when his wife found out, she left him. He stole, and he got put in jail. Cause and effect. Also, never forget that intelligence is always going to = better Karma, even if you use it for bad ends - which is why some people seem to not be "punished". Being good at what you do counts as good Karma, in a way.

I agree, Visp..."My Name is Earl" DOES depict karma accurately, but let me clarify my previous comment. While the program demonstrates karma in action, part of the joke that makes the show funny is that EARL...the character, not the show itself, doesn't really understand how karma works. He is always saying, "Karma made me do this," and "karma wanted me to do that," as if karma was some sort of force that influences his actions...as if the effect influences its own cause...when, in fact, it's the other way around. We generate our own karma by our thoughts, words and deeds...it's not some intelligent force that "makes" you do something...karma is the result of what we do, not the cause of what we do. So, that's what I meant when I said that Earl doesn't really understand what karma is, but yes, you're right when you say the program as a whole does present good examples of it.

"Deserve" and "should" don't exist. They are your perceptions of how reality ought to be, but our perceptions are, almost always, wrong. What we perceive to be "reality" is our physical brain's attempt to translate what's "out there" into something we can deal with...it does this based on memories and past experiences. Since no two people haev EXACTLY the same memories or past experiences...and nobody's memory is perfect...then no two people can have exactly the same perception of reality. What we perceive is a subjective idea of a truth we don't normally see.

Stewie, life is full of good AND bad...that's life. Most of our unhappiness comes from grasping after what we perceive as "good" while pushing away from what we perceive to be "bad." If we are running away from the "bad," we're running away from life itself. By the same token, if you're grasping after nothing in life but the "good," you're pursuing an unattainable goal that will only bring you further suffering. Picture the Taoist Yin-Yang symbol. There are equal parts dark and light, and each has a little piece of the other in it. Imagine it rotating, with you standing in the center. You will pass through dark and light as part of that natural cycle. If you generate negative karma, you move off-center and spend more time in the dark. Grasping after nothing but "good" things puts you off-center the other way. Being off-center takes you out of the natural flow. This is why Taoism always stresses the importance of "staying in the center."

My bro and I were raise stric, learn that like several had say what goes around comes around.
But also that once you give your word ehter it turns out bad for you or good you have to stick with it no matter the concequenses.
Karma is only a word to my knowledge, done research it is a belef that some have, but I think it is more a burden or and excuse to ones actions, some use it for that and its just plain discusting, take responsability for what is happening to you and your action stop blaming some other force, one is master of its own future.

It is HARD to continue to do unto others as you would have them towards you . . . balance in all things...when you see the misery and pain to those around you and the unsensitiviness of those that can continue to lie and cheat and such and continue to get away with it... I constantly have to stop and remember that karma will balance and in the time and manner in which it does.

I wonder why I am so unlucky in love and other aspects of my life...what has Karma having me atone for in this life to balance what I've done in a past life? I sure hope I learn my lesson and soon!

A better question to ask would be, "what have I done to bring myself to this circumstance?" Karma doesn't do anything TO you, it is the concept of you determining your own future circumstance by your actions in the present. As the Buddha said, "If you want to now what your past life was like, observe your present condition. If you want to know what your future life will be like, observe your present actions."

Karma is a bit more complicated than that but that is basically the right idea. But you can make up for things in the past with what you do now and in the future to make up for anything that you have done.

I recently got the book *Wiccan Beliefs & Practices* by Gary Cantrell, who had what I thought was an interesting opinion of Karma.

Gary stated that HE did not believe that we pay in this life for the mistakes made in past ones, but we pay in this one for the wrongs we intentionally inflict upon others.

Also, he mentioned that most people take *what you give out comes back to thee* rather more literally than it's meant.

For example, if you are PMSing and you kick someone in the shins, it doesn't necessarily mean someone is going to kick YOU... it could be as obvious as that, or it could be as subtle as maybe something good was GOING to happen to you, and now it won't, because you have altered your path. ((And you will never know.))

I think this makes sense, personally.

Karma quotes:

"Some people misunderstand the concept of karma. They take the Buddha's doctrine of the law of causality to mean that all is predetermined, that there is nothing that the individual can do. This is a total misunderstanding. The very term karma or action is a term of active force, which indicates that future events are within your own hands. Since action is a phenomenon that is committed by a person, a living being, it is within your own hands whether or not you engage in action."
--His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama

"I am the owner of my karma .
I inherit my karma.
I am born of my karma.
I am related to my karma.
I live supported by my karma.
Whatever karma I create, whether good or evil, that I shall inherit."
--The Buddha

“Worthless people blame their karma”
--Burmese Proverb

Or...you make your own karma. It is a product of your actions and intentions. It's not an external force that causes things to happen to you.

as we all know Karma is a reaction to an action....and in my opinion....this person would of had to have done these things with the intention of inflicting harm or some kind of assault to the person(s)....I also believe that if things are done without malice and are purely unintentional, there really should be no huge reaction to the action....don't know if you agree but...that is just my opinion..
