of Witches & Vampires, do you think either one is accepted in modern day more than the other or not at all?

mrd, stated it beautifully but here's my 2 cents worth.
The practice of witchcraft and other pagan beliefs have become more widespread and less shrouded in secrecy, so that there may be a bit more acceptance by the general public. Whereas vampirism, is still in the realm of fantasy to most people and anyone purporting to be one or of enjoying the energy transfer by blood, psi, or sex would be seen as a parasite by most, I think.

I am both and i am not accepted in society

Well stated arguments ...my two cents are that it would depend on what part of the country you are in whether either would be accepted. I live in the Bible belt, thus here, neither is accepted. I suspect that in larger cities (NewYork, San F. etc) there would be more of a tolerance for both.

I don't feel that the larger cities show more tolerance, its just that the majority vamps tend to live in your larger cities and because there is no way to tell whether one is vampire or not by they way they dress, they blend in better in the cities.

I honestly feel that the acceptance level is the same for witches and vampires. Both are minorities

i personally it is never truely accepted anywhere... because of one thing.... (people) i quote something from my pap pap he was a wise man... a Man is smart open minded and accepting, but People are dumb, easily confused, panicy, and easily infulenced.... if you talk with them one on one they will at least look at it in a different peception, but you try to explain it to a group of people they will try to burn you at the stake, i am Wiccan i have my own belifes some can call me a witch but i hav found it easier to talk to a person than a group of people... thats what i think

I think it depends alot in wich country you live...

In Portugal...the witches are known, and "working" at daylight.

Everyone knows who they are, and go to them...

Vampires...you dont hear about them too much...just once time to time...

But, ofcourse, none of them are "accepted" by the society.

Well, society generally dislikes both. Witches were stoned and vamps were staked. I see witchcraft books all over the place but it doesn't mean they are becomin more accepted.

People seem to know or think they know more about witches than vampires. I don't think that to many people really accept eith one more than the other. People are still going to think that anyone with those beliefs are a little wierd and won't accept them as easily as other people.

both are reasonably accepted. not by society in general but they have a very big following.

I think it has a lot to do with Tv and Movies. but It is very trendy to hang out with those that identify themselves as witches or vampires or both.

The practice of withery is more accepted than vampires.....Vampire to some are still not in reality...however people do use spells and so forth and there are many stores that sell things that a witch needs.

In the country i live in right now, they are not well accepted, but prolly witchcraft is a bit more spread and common so someway it's a bit more accepted...

I'm not very sure that one or the other is more accepted in society. Both are lifestyles that aren't mainstream (for lack of a better word) and there are many ignorances about them both. Whenever ignorances are present, there will be intolerance. Since I can't say which of these has more ignorances (since I believe it's possible that it varies from place to place), I'm going to say that neither is more accepted by society.

I would say that nither are accepted in today's society because most everyone is very closed minded onsuch a subject.

While I agree that both are part of the fringe even today, witchcraft has come to receive some acceptance if only through the constant confusion and cross 'pollination' between witchcraft and paganism. Since pagan is now a readily accepted if not completely understood modern religion, witches are often just thought of as another term for pagans. The idea that one is even a 'practicing witch' creates little in the way of animosity and now even quite a bit of curiosity.

Vampires while still suffering through their choice of words, are always going to be looked at if nothing else as either predatory or parasitic since even with a willing 'host' a vampire is feeding on someone else. This is going to make it difficult for it to ever become a very accepted form of lifestyle...should it ever get beyond the reactions of most who deem 'vampires' crazy people or delusional.

I would have to say that witchcraft is more accepted than vampirism. Vampires are considered mythical creatures that do not exist. However magic and witchcraft is something that we are taught of as children to beware of. I dunno. . just my opinion.

Witches are accepted way more I have found, that is if they are Wiccan and follow the harm none rule of course. However, other forms of witchcraft are not as well accepted. Still overall I think witchcraft is still a bit more accepted then vampirism. One example is at least in the DSM IV it states one is not insane if they do something as part of their religion; there aren't any handy clauses like that for vampires.

I have also found a LOT of people in the witchcraft and other magical communities are VERY judgemental of vampires and quite biased. Either calling vampires evil, or deluded, insane and so on.

Then there are some of us that just happen to fall in both catagories and had to stop caring what society thought a long time ago LOL.

Mind you this is just my opinion, as a Witch, and a woman that most call a form of Vampire.. Being a vampire is much more acceptable then being a witch. I have to disagree with both. They should BOTH be acceptable, but I might be a bit biase.

My general belief on this subject is that it all depends on the individual. As a whole, I suppose that society is beginning to accept witchcraft more than vampirism...but I've had good and bad responses to both, so it's hard for me to gauge.

In my honest opinion, witches are much more accepted in todays society. Their beliefs have become a religion that is widely acknowledged as such. Vampires, unfortunatley are not as easy for people to accept. They are looked at as either fiends or, for lack of a better word, crazy humans. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. In some smaller social groups, where the individuals have a more open mind, both witches AND vampires are accepted. And I find that in those groups, there are less traces of diversity tension.

All of you post some interesting comments. I am a Witch with Vampire roots. I have Vampire & Witch friends & family. In my opinion, it depends what country & where you are. Funny how Christians have their 10 commandments & one is "Thou shall not Judge". Perhaps they need to study their religion more. Satan, by the way, is a Christian creation. The world is made of positive/negative, good/evil it is part of the human process. Being a Witch, have been all my incarnations I strive to forgive ignorant, close-minded enities.

To some extent I think that is true.

Wicca/Wiccan is considered a religion and even Paganism is consider a sort of cultish religion that is mildly accepted.

But EmmaPeel is correct in saying that it is very funny about the christian faith stating in thier laws about "Do Not Judge"and they have been judging others for centuries.

I doubt if Vampirism will ever truly be accepted, but it does have it's media appeal at the moment.

i think that most people see the vampire as just a of shoot of goth people and harnless where as witchcraft is accepted but disliked

well i have always practiced witchcraft, but lately have just been studying it and the vampire thing is very new to me, but i would say witchcraft is very much more accepted

I would say in general, whitchcraft is more accepted as it is viewed as a religion where as vampires are more viewed as "goth kids playing games" or "adults who just never grew up."

A lot more negitive views on Vampires unless you talk to a "christian" and then they seem to think witchcraft is of their devil.

Sure but if one looks at the total numbers who have a negative opinion of modern witches vs. those who have a negative opinion of modern vampires, one should be able to acknowledge that witches have gained far more stable support as being just another religion or lifestyle whereas vampires are still looked at as either delusional or if believed then as parasites and therefore negatively.

I don't think thaat witches or vampires are accepted in moder day. But in a way I think that witchs are more than anything..Now don't get me wrong this is just what I have SEEN....it is easyer to find witch thing's in moder day out and about that vampire thing's or any other relgion....But I don't think nothing is accepted unless people aroud you think that it is okay...Do you see where I am getting at this?. From what I hae seen and dealt with almost everything has to be a secart because people just don't get it..so they put what they don't get, or afrid of down to fit there life.

personnally i don't think either one is accepted, and wouldn't risk trying to see if anyone will most people don't like what cannot be explained, and they cannot understand if science cannot provide an answer for it yoiu can be sure they'll try to find one using whom ever of either that they find, a great man once said, mankind fears what cannot be explained, and they cannot understand, personnaly i'd try not to give them any reason to try to.

I have been the thread and I think it might come down to perception of acceptance.

there are all kinds of mediums to use as outlets if you consider yourself vampiric.

and there are actual churches for both.

and you can walk down the street as a witch or a vampire and only half the population is going to think you are nuts.

that is a long way from being beheaded or staked or having to deal with happen in salem.

I thinkk that on it's own validity is a type of acceptance.

hmmm - i could have sworn i posted a comment last night. where i live now, Witches are accepted pretty much. there are a few narow minded and ignorrant people - as in all walks of life - but on the whole i am accepted, and my employers even consider my Paganism to be a bonus (employing someone of a religious minority). when i lived in the Midlands, i did encounter quite a bit of prejudice, but it is far less now than thirty years ago. Witches are definetely more accepted than Vampires. At best, most people think of Vampires as a joke or deranged.

Just yesterday in the UK the news reported that mutilated sheep keep being found on Dartmoor arranged in occult patterns. No-one interviewed mentioned witchcraft at all, just the cruelty. The witchcraft side was ignored.

I think people in the UK accept witchcraft because they don't think it can work. It is a shame if you want to have ppl know you're a witch - it is great if you want to be left alone to do your witchcraft

The UK government must have started to accept witches as well because they took away the law that hanged witches back in 1736. The Zimbabwe government took their law away on 2nd July 2006! (Thank you Google)

I can't find any law against vampires ever, unless they broke somne other law by attacking someone it seems they were always OK.

I think the modern/current vampires generally keep themselves to themselves, so there isn't a lot for people to have to accept

well i belive that witchs are more open then most vampires and people dont care if you are a witch or not

i think that witch is a word that should be switched with the wicca or wicans because that is for fitting but i dont think people accept them.
vampires: people can't accept them either because of how the look and act what is the big deal the are human with some minor differences.

I know in the town im living in witches are more accepted then vampires since people here think vampires are just made up for the movies and books only. But since I am both i know i was accepted as a witch but afraid to tell anyone else that i am a psi vamp as they will try to stake me though the heart. dam those so called buffy the vampire slayer wannabes lol.

I also believe there are others like me in my town but they are still afraid to come out of the coffin or broomstick closet to tell others of what they are as they don't know how other people will react towards them.

Witchcraft is definately more accepted because people tend to feel less threatened by Witches.though in most circles both Witches and Vampires are frowned upon.I guess with all of the technologies and advancements,the people of the world are still closeminded and living in the darkages.

I think it's largely a question of intent. Witches are now able to be seen as having good intent. We're not talking about the Good Witch of the North here, but we are talking about the more common terms of 'white magic' and the relation of many modern witches to Wicca or Santeria or Voodoo which have been seen in a much more benevolent light these days.

Now vampires will always have to struggle with the fact that their defining intent is to feed...on the rest of the population. Whether that's seen as largely benign or self delusional or totally predatory makes little difference to the larger fact that it's parasitic in nature. Choose the name vampire? You're stuck with some serious bad juju among the rest of the people.

I think witches are move accepted because in the general publics view they do not seems as "weird" or devastating. They also are starting to recognize people with certain "powers" which some call themselves witches yet not many people come out and admit to anyone they are vampire. It's a bit harder to believe when it comes to most people. It's easier for someone to imagine a person doing rituals and saying spells then drinking fresh warm blood.

depends where you go, i live in an area where i CANT tell anyone who or what i am, hell i get bad enough looks from the few peircings i have, but in other areas of course its more acceptable, you dont hear about people set on fire anymore.

I would think alot of it depends on where you live. Where I am neither is accepted in any form. I actually had someone move away from me when I made a joke about being a witch, and it tookme an hour to talk a dentist into makeing a mold of my teeth for a set of fangs.

It does definitely depend on where you live becuase i small town Australia it's not the best thing to be a vampire as they would not accept them and there would probably be a great amount of hysteria. but witches are readily accepted in the area which i live in and this is good for me. If only they would accept vampires too.

I've lived on each coast, north and south, and everywhere in between, and my beliefs/practices have not been accepted anywhere that i have been. I find it ironic that a country that was founded on religious freedom shuns alot of the non-christian based faiths. I am a practicioner of wicca and whenever i have revealed that to those outside of the craft, i have been treated like i have a disease. I don't think society as a whole would accept witchcraft or vampires with greater ease over the other. People are afraid of what they do not understand, and hollywood has so fictionalized both witchcraft and vampirism that the general population consider both a "dreamworld" if you will, shunning those claiming to be either a witch or a vampire. I think another deterence to acceptance on a whole is too many "pretend" vamps/witches. Those who like the quote unquote "lifestyle" that either present but yet do not follow or truly believe themselves to be the aforementioned.

yea i see where you are coming form. my people(my friends) are understand ing of me and what i do because we are all into the same stuff. i have gotten into many heated "conversations" with many of the people around me everyday because they thing im some kind of freak but i firgure who needs em they dont know anything about me or what i do so it brings peace into my being. eveb if no one acceps me as who i am i figure i am me and theres no changing it!!! so kiss me ass!!

really it depends on what group of people u talk to because every culture in the world has different beliefs on the subject of witches and vampires so if u ask someone from africa the will say that witch craft is more acceptable because in some areas there are still witch doctors but also in the same area there are still to this day tales of vampires .

I believe witchcraft is more accepted because the thought of feeding off of another person or just blood is just plain scary and disgusting.

witches are more accepted because wicca and paganism are recognized federal religions now...vampirism and lycans are still mocked,laughed at...and considered fiction by most of the modern world...but we are growing in numbers

I don't think either are readily accepted no matter where they are geopgraphically situated.

I know that even trying to discuss either in my neck of the woods...I am looked at like a freak! So, I have chosen to not speak to anyone about such matters.

I think more people are knowledgeable about witches than Vampires....I would say the majority of folks, when asked about Vamps, could only relate to Hollywood portrayals....just like the thread that was just closed about "the war with lycans and vamps".

I live in California, there is not much that is really frown upon here. ppl who have identified themselves as either do not get the wholle social stigma of the crazies as in other places. we have a couple of wiccan churchs and there are clubs and places that are devoted to vampires.

becuase of that I guess, I feel that they are more accepted.

Vampire are by far more accepted in todays society as they are actively sought and hoped for..... Witches are often considered untrustworthy unintelligent and a bane of society.

I think Witches are more tolerated than Vampires because the feminine mystique may seem less threatening to many...Although I believe modern pop culture is definatley more fascinated with Vampires! I don't think most people would accept one in real life however, because of fear. and the reputation a vampire has for causing death. It just comes down to the general populance not being educated or aware of real witches and vampires, and what their true natures are.

I'm vampiric, and luckly because of where I live I'm kind of accepted in school. I really only hang out with 2 other people though, but many people know me and are not afraid of me so I guess that's a good thing.

Here in the Philippines witches are more accepted than vampire... I mean we have a lot of different entities here like mananaggal, kapri, and whole lot more but no vampire... the only entity that is more close to vampire is the wak wak in the Philippines, but it's not vampire at all. But witches are very common here. It's not new to us because a lot of people here are practicing that.

I would have to say Witchcraft. These days the thought of drinking blood is not very accepted, mostly I think because of the diseases spreading like wildfire. Going around and drinking blood to some people is a very reckless thing to do. Witches though they are not accepted either can be "ignored" for the most part by people who seem to still have a hatred or fear for them. A lot of what they do is dismissed as fantasy, make believe, but drinking blood is more real to some people. And more dangerous. heh I dont know really.

That's a tough one. I'd say that vampires are less accepted, in the sense that a lot of people don't even believe that vampires exist. Most people know that Witches exist, even though a lot of the time they are falsely informed (all Witchcraft is the work of the devil, etc.). SO, because a lot of people won't even admit to the existence of vampires, they are therefore less accepted in society.

As I am only newly awakened, I cannot offer an true opionion on the vampire side. However, I do believe witches are more accepted now than in previous years.

I have been accepted and rejected for my pagan/wiccan beliefs. I have felt an energy that has lead me to believe that being different is way cooler than the stereotype of a follower.

So with that I think being wiccan or a witch is gaining in popularity.

Vampirism, blood letting is giving oneself to risk of blood pathogens.

The show "Supernatural" had a show about vampires that chose to drink animal blood , were allowed to live, once the hunters understood them not to be a treat to humanity. With that even vampirism may soon be socialy acceptable.

neither are really accepted. although witches are more accepted than vampires. vampires will probably never be accepted, except by our own kind or the like minded...in general we will never be accepted. but who needs to be accepted by society? society is decaying and at a fast rate...why should we strive to obtain their good opinion?

Ignorance is truely bliss when those who dare cast stones in glass houses.

Worry not about what society says or thinks about which witch is which. Be more concerned ( for a lack of better word only ) about staying True to Yourself, Your Brothers, Sisters, Fathers and Mothers.

Acceptance, I agree with Billy will not ever come. Now this does not change that Wicca is a very fast growing religion. Perhaps as it grows in numbers the tolerance will lead to something else.

Most people do not like to study things below the surface, so perhaps the perception of acceptance will be created. But if the majority of people were to see and understand what both entail, I do not think either would be as tolerated as they are today. The turning of a blind eye benefits both sides.

well to answer your question, we actually had a conversation, on the arts/ vampireism and religion, and i think that a big majority of people are accepting depending on what confluence you bring the subject up onas far as terms.

Wicca has become more popular over the past few years and is being picked up more than ever.
So yeah I think it's becoming socially accepted, but because it's out of the "norm" it'll never be fully taken on board, there will always be one or two people who disagree.

Vampirism, well as long as you don't go around taking random strangers off the street and sucking them dry why not. It's become more of a sexual thing and I don't think the majority of people really care what we get up to in bed.

Back when my great grandmother was a child the practice of witchcraft was serverly looked down upon. My whole family steered clear of the public. Now that I am here in this day and age I see more people coming to me, wanting me to teach them things and I think it's very stupid.

i lived in a really small town in Illinois about an hour south of Chicago and there were only 2 other people in my town that are like me. i am both and so were my 2 friends but we were not accepted. i now live in a some what small town in Brazil and neither of them are excepted either. so, i have not found a place where i have been excepted. i havent been in Brazil for that long so i havent really had a chance to even find people who are like me.

i really think it does matter where you live. if you live in a bigger city then you will find more people like you and it is more tolerated than small towns. thats pretty much all got for this.

i live in a big cityand there are more of us. I think that is why both have been accepted by our community. We will always be persecuted for our beliefs, but that is a price we have to pay.

Kitty from what you have posted, it appears to me that you referring to just within your own personal circle of people you meet.

While I do agree that a larger populace means the appearance of more acceptance, I would argue that is only because the people you meet do not know you or your lifestyle as well. Closed-minded people are everywhere, and are in fact the majority of the populace.

What I am saying is that it is easier to blend/hide within larger numbers of people under the guise of acceptance. However if these people knew, then that would not be the case.

The people around me actually know who and what I am. They don't all believe it, but they all except it. They have no choice in the matter. I have many friends that are alike me. I also have many friends that don't quite understand it, but say do what you want to do.
