If anything, this proves the FEAR of vampires. To say this proves the existance of vampires themselves is, to put it mildly, fucking moronic.

Wow, there wasn't a shred of proof given in those....However it does prove that superstitious people BELIEVED these people were vampires a long time ago. Nails?? so so many peoples bodies are STILL desecrated like that, it only proves peoples disrespect for another's corpse.

Ok. its driving me nuts....there HAS to be more to this....these people cannot be archaeologists, they should have their titles stripped.

That article didn't prove anything. To say there is proof just because they found some corpses nailed down is ridiculous by any standard. I agree with anti; they shouldn't call themselves archaeologists.

It appears the scientists found the old "undead" cementary and reported the condition of the bodies there. The only named "expert" was of magic not one of the scientists. All it proves though is that they were very superstitious and didn't mind descreting the bodies of their dead.

Interesting though I agree with the others, there is no "proof", only assumption. So the myth of the vampire was evident.....didn't we already know that? Show me proof about what hasn't been proven before.....until then....

I believe vampires have existed but this shows nothing. Those "nails" could've been for anything else than for vampires. I'm pretty sure that they 'might' have dug a vampire's body, but lack the proof to say it really is a vampire.

I've been thinking on this.....ya know, perhaps the "vampire" bodies that were unearthed were in life just like most of us here, believers of what they wanted to be real, or just firm in their beliefs. Imagine us being slain or our bodies defiled merely because of what we love now by ignorant prejudiced judgemental morons.....just an afterthought.....

you can find simular accounts like these in vampire myths and legend books...there is stuff that goes a little further then finding a graveyard of bodies that people of the past suspected of being vampires....If I were to be buried and nailed into my coffin today and dug up hundreds of years later, How does that prove the existence of vampires? (well my fangs might show....lol)

This type of preventative action upon corpses isn't new information, and I agree with others who've said it; this isn't proof that blood-sucking vampires actually existed.

What is is proof of is proof of a people's fear of their friends and loved ones rising from the dead.

Reading this article over, I mulled over something in my head; what would cause that fear?

Stories, of course. Who started the stories, though, and why do you see this sort of vampire fear all over the world in a time when the world was largely unconnected to eachother?

My answer is an absolutely hilarious scene that popped up in my head.

Okay, so they proved what people did to alleged vampire corpses. They didn't prove that there were actually undead, bloodsucking vampires running around. They shouldn't make false claims.

omg, that reminds me of the mermaid baby, on the discovery health channel......there was a baby born in a small village and her legs were attached.....the whole family was ostracized and the villagers said the mother fucked a sea spirit or something LOL. Same bullshit ideology.

haha just saying "mermaid baby" makes me giggle for reasons unknown. Yea was watching tv, people in Romania used to/still do dig up bodies and due to decomposition they often find fluid/blood on the deceased's mouth.....so, by default, he must have recently fed! LOL...great idea, you can tell a real vamp by what their bloated corpse looks like!

it just goes to prove once again of peoples fear of the unknown. the story doesnt prove that they existed it just proves that people are still clinging to the fears of what they dont know & understand. for creators sake the news came out with a story sayin that they found a piece of driftwood of noahs ark, not to mention that judas now has his own book in the bible....the news media will put anything on tv as long as they think itll catch a persons attention.....

Alright, lets look at this logically.


Lets say there are vampires, and they've been around for thousands of years. What do vampires need to survive? Blood. And where do they get the majority of their blood from? Humans. Now lets say that the first vampire turned several humans instead of killing them, and those vampires turned even more; etc, etc. Over the course of a 1,000 years, humans and vampires would become extinct. Because those that weren't killed, were turned, and those that were turned killed and turned even more.

So theoretically, everybody would be a vampire by now. And since everybody is vampire, there aren't any humans to feed upon, which means we would have to poach upon animals. Once that source of blood is gone, there is no more. The 'thirst' would drive the vampires mad, and eventually die from the lack of blood.

Just have to love the allegations of PROOF for any kind of find...however, it is good to see that the legend was taken very seriously by many and makes you wonder what those people did to be staked liked that.

As anyone here ever heard of cults? They had all sorts of sacrificial techniques for their demented rituals back in the dark ages.

good point. some cults killed just for the pure pleasure of experimenting with new weapons...it seemed to be a way of life for them im guessing, just like choosing what shirt goes with what pair of pants

Well I must say it was an interesting read. I feel parts of the story is lacking. The bodies that they speak of could be anything. It makes me think of the witch hunts etc were they were so paranoid and burned everyone who fit a profile. I found there mothods in the story a bit over the top. I would like to have more evidence.

It's interesting to see that they are considering the possibility. However, in some cultures, every corpse was nailed to its coffin to prevent it rising from the dead, though not specifically as a vampire.

well I read the article, and I didn't see anything that would constitute proof in my book.

As someone having recently read (yes, I will admit it) "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Brooks, how do we know these people were supposedly vampires? Why not something else?

The article proved the superstition of the vampire lore, not existence. Like posted earlier descration of a grave as well.

I cannot believe that is supposed to be "news". Its common knowledge that some were burried with steaks or nails driven through various body parts.

Interesting article but Im just seeing the fear of vampires and the supernatural like most. Their obsessing is actually very intriguing tho.

Well it doesn;t proove the exsistance of vampires. If thier was writing on it or something then mabey but so farit only prooves these people believed in them.

I found it an interesting read, but like everyone else has said, it lacks proof. There are many mythical beliefs out there, I believe had to be started from some grain of truth.

That "grain" of truth you speak of, is 99.9% as far from the truth/what it has become. Ever hear a fish story? or play the game "telephone"? every person twists the story a bit more and a bit more, etc. And every fish grows in size, and gets harder to catch. This renders that "grain" almost if not in most cases, entirely irrelevant.

Though, I get what you are saying, I am not sure how it pertains to this particular story.

i used to reead alot of books on this stuff in my younger years....
i read a book once about voodoo... and how people were raising zombies from the dead to be there slaves and when people saw the zombie they would open the grave and they would burn the body.... if it was there....
and i also read another book about a girl had died and about a year later people saw her walking the streets... and the coffin was opened and the body layed there and it had a bite on the neck and so the towns people put a stake through her heart and and put a silver cross on her and buried her and she was never reported seen again...

I got nothing...

This is what...a case of an overzealous headline writer at best...and grocery store tabloid at worst. Whether or not the archeological dig is accurate doesn't really matter since there's no shortage of proof that mankind in general is a dumb, frightened and superstitious species.

Superstition is almost by definition 'dumb'. It revolves around the idea of coming up with fictional reasons for real world happenings. Superstition is based on ignorance and leads to scapegoating and quite often, violence against some innocent party.

Superstition is responsible for the hundreds of animal cruelty cases against black cats (especially this time of year). Superstition is responsible for witch burnings, and grave desecration and false convictions and torture throughout history.

sence it was so long ago scientists cannot prove that vampires existed without some hard evidence. that could only mean the people were scared that the vamps would rise and kill them. i think that they are just concluding out of their own thoughts and not of whats actualy there infront of them. scientists have done it many times before like with that weird fish thing that they found a couple years ago. whos to say they arent doing it again??

it is also very scarry that in some cultures such ideas have taken a pernament root. It is one thing to throw salt over your shoulder, but quite another to have your grandmother's grave vandalized.

There will always be a little truth in all fiction, and a little fiction in all truth. For this story, without names or universities backing this up publicly it's hard to determine for oneself which would be which.

I still hold to what I said about the cults just being demented lunatics, who killed people with whatever methods they thought was best at the time. Such as killing them, and burying the bodies head first like Skylla said.

Just because they found a bunch of skeletons and coffins, doesn't prove anything. It's an interesting find. But where the actual science behind it, are they doing any tests to find out more? Something tells me this was more of a ritualistic thing that it was a vamp find.

Maybe some disease or something was going around then and that was one of the weird remedies? I don't know but still some what interesting.

Definitely doesn't prove vampires exist. Most likely the people who destroyed the corpses were just overly paranoid.

yeah thats just strange, dont get me wrong i believe that way back eons ago they're might have been a species relativly similiar to "vampires"but these corpeses they found could have simply been a raging murder where people just mutilated bodies, kinda like the mafia, and nailed the coffins down so no one at the time on the outside could get in and not the other way around, they are some unexplained mysterys out there aliens, JFKs shooter, vampires yadda yadda, but people have to realize that humans arent so easily convienced now days, im a realist, i gotta see it to believe. For example colonists from the Salem witch trials were so easily convienced those women and some men were witches and wizards because their whole simple life was based on religion, and who was the one that got the superstition started a preachers daughter. the sayin fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me occurs.

The only thing this proves is how superstitions cause the desecration of tombs. Now, if they had found an 18th century corpse that hadn't decayed a single day and had a small tunnel leading to its grave, now that may have proved something.

as I said before, journalists look for the sensational in a story and write that, i'm sure there was far more to these reports than a little 20 line article, i'd like to see the full investigative reports on it

All the article really proves is how superstitious ancient cultures were. People were and are afraid of the unknown so they come up with some ridiculous way to explain it away and sometimes violent ways of stopping the event from occuring. Unfortunately the belief of "blood sucking" vampires led to the desicration of many graves of loved ones.

What ever happened to the belief that the body should rest in peace, not pieces.
