What is your opinion about day walkers?
Is there anything in vampiric folklore that mentions it,or are they hollywood creations?

Hm... well to base it on hollywood, of course anything is possible there. As for real "vampires"... I dont believe there is such a thing. While some may have a fetish, or whatever else that may drive them to drink blood, there is no basic need for it to survive. Therefore those who refer to themselves at vampires are still only human, do not live forever, CAN walk into sunlight, and do not NEED blood to survive at all.

In mythology vampires are almost always cursed souls, trapped between life and death. When these myths started the sun was considered holy, and so it was deadly to a cursed soul. I have not studied vampire lore for a while so I cannot remember if there is mention of daywalkers in traditional stories. I would not doubt it though, vampires were often considered to be able to wield "dark" magic that allowed them to do what they should not be able to.

There are so many different forms of vampirism, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear that these "Day Walkers" exist too.

Hollywood makes anything happen. As for Daywalkers you never know anything is possible. I don't believe that vamperism is a fetish for everyone, a lot are actually vampires it's just that over time we adapted to the changes so that it would be easier to co-exist with the humans, but yes in some way fashion or form everyone has at least a little human to them.

I think this all goes back to what exactly is a vampire? Do we for sure know that a true vampire can only go out a night? Unless we ourselves are one we dont know. I personally believe that it is possible. Why would it not be? I can say that I havent read many books believed to be factual about vampires but in the ones I have read I have never observed anything stating that they are strictly nocturnal beings. Perhaps that part is lore.

I have never seen anything referring to "Day Walkers" in the research that I have done; however, this is not to say that they didn't exist or that evidence is out there. I am under the belief that anything is possible.

I only heard about the 'daywalker' theory from the movie 'Blade'. Literature doesn`t mention it, nor do contemporary beliefs.

It`s something new Hollywood is using to spice up the vampire image.

I have never heard of day walker in regards to myths. It's not a hollywood creation though. The character of "Blade", which is the first mention of day walker that I found, was created by DC comics. So by that definition, day walker was invented by the comics industry that was transferred to the movie genre by hollywood.

I agree with hott & Kytrin. Daywalkers are hollywood. Under none of the proven vamp myths are they stated. As for real life vamps & sunlight, most of us get aggravated by search, myself personally ... I simply sneeze at the sight of the morning sun & afternoon one as well. Other than that I walk outside in the sun easily.

Okay I'll agree that maybe hollywood had something to do with the reference, but I'm still curious as well if it originated somewhere else! Well there are alot of people on here that claim to be vamp or have vamp abilities, and some do have sensitivity to light, but it doesn't kill them! So if that's the case then wouldn't all the ones on here claiming vamp abilities then be day walkers.

Back to subject, who would get an chance of getting skin cancer under in sun light more than an hour per day?

There is nothing in the actual folklore that requires vampires to be strictly nocturnal. While generally they are depicted as such, yet there are many folkloric accounts of vampires working, living, etc., day and night... sometimes right among the rest of the townspeople.

Thus... it's all Stoker and, later, Hollywood that mandates vampires as nocturnal, only.

Oh... and a quick aside to SimonTheAntares -

The term daywalker as was already said came from Blade. As with Hollywood, other movies, such as the original Dracula, has a vampire awake and moving around in daylight, just away from the sun.

I think a lot of things have been conjured up by hollywood. There are vamps who will not "turn to ashes" in the sunlight ppl lol. Vamps are just sensitve to the sunlight and some can be injured by it too, but seriously there are daywalkers. I am one.

Contrary to the opinion of most these so called "Daywalkers", which is a hollywood term by the way, does have roots in folklore were they are referred to as Dhamphirs. I'll qoute the definition from Wikipedia as follows:

"Dhampirs are believed to be beings that are half-vampire and half-human, born from a vampire father and a human mother, or the reverse. Dhampirs, in comparison with normal human beings, are unusually adept at killing vampires. The word "dhampir" is associated with folklore of the Roma people of the Balkans."

i think anything is possible..just because we havent seen something(someone) like a vampire, doesnt mean they dont exist. just because holywood(misspelled sorry) glams up what a vampire is doesnt make them not exist, or for that matter say they do exist, there is no way unless extensive research has been done and you've seen a vampire, or you have looked everywhere and everyone who claims to be a vampire isnt one and find that they do or dont truly exist, then there is really no point to this topic except to but opinions up here and maybe get a better idea of what might be out in the world. but who is to know but vampires themselves?

actually the term "day walkers" was coined by marvel comics as they are the original inventers of 'blade'

In most folklore, vampires are not killed by sunlight and therefore are not limited to only nightime escapades. The belief that sunlight hurts them was actually popularized by F.W. Murnau's classic silent film Nosferatu, in which the vampire Graf Orlock is lured into feeding upon one of the female protagonists until daybreak when he was "dissolved" by the morning light.

as alot of others think it is the termonolgy used, in movies, but, ask if a vampire can walk in the daylight, well of course they can they are born that wat and the only way they cant is if they have a genetic defect of the alergy of the son and this is recorded in scientic research where blisters evolve on the skin once in daylight which is found early in a vampires life if they have that defect.

As cute as that post is, consuming a "lot" of blood doesn't do much more than cause profuse vomiting, which could take your mind off your fictionally scorched skin, I suppose.

Either way, I get to be amused, so all is well :)

I don't doubt that they exist. A vampire was always recorded in literature as primarily nocturnal..but never mentioned that they were strictly nocturnal. As with anything...evolution causes a species to evolve and adapt...so a daywalker in my mind is very possible.

Although I do believe that the more recent knowledge that has been running thru the general public is due to the Hollywood movie machine.
