I was looking at a thread about some truths on vampires.
Please can you add in your replies to this post your personal favorite truthful book you have read and what was good about it for you?

Im reading “Vampires encounters with the undead” by David J Skal.
It has 2 centuries of vampire history and literature … im still reading it lol

I haven't read it YET but the Vampire Codex is supposed to be a wonderful, factual book about vampires. I've also searched through the "Vampire Encyclopedia" for information to help me out with the novel I'm writing. It was very helpful!

The Vampire Codex is a good source of information. Which is what I think you are looking for in this thread. But, if you are looking for good fictional books to read, I will have to say Anne Rice is by far the best author of a Vampire series. And then there is always Dracula by Bram Stoker. Both of these authors have a totally different way of writing, so it is hard to compare one to the other.

It's good to read a variety of Vampire books. Each one has it's charm and it's perspective on Vampires... Some books have a clearer more, how do I put it... "Accurate" view of Vampires... I liked Anne Rice and MANY others and Kresely Cole's 'No Rest For the Wicked' (Which mentions Beserkers and the Horde) is pretty good...
Here's a link to a place with MANY other links and authors

As far as research goes, I did have a book once that I simply adored! I can't remember the name of it. :( It had a collection of vampire literature and vampire movies. It also had vampire folklore. Ooooo... And it had a listing of historical figures that were considered vampires--Elizabeth Bathory, Marquis de Sade, Vlad Tepes, etc. Grrrrr... I wish I could remember the name...

If you're looking for non-fiction, I would have to say probably the Vampire Codex would be your best bet. Fiction-wise, it's hard to make a decision - there are so many excellent vampire books available, and the authors have such different styles and views............. My personal preferences would include Anne Rice (naturally!), Bram Stoker, Laurell Hamilton. And Peter Tonkin wrote a book a long time ago called "The Journal of Edwin Underhill" that has another, different perspective and is very good too.

I haven't finished it yet, but "Encyclopedia of the Undead" by Dr. Bob Curran is a fairly good book so far. It has information on werewolves, voodoo, etc. as well as vampires. He wrote a book entirely about vampires too, but I have not read it yet.

I've really liked most of the vampire novels I've read, each for different reasons. As a classic, I'd say Bram Stoker's "Dracula" is fantastic, the whole storyline is captivating and original.

I recently read a novel called "Live girls" by Ray Garton which surprised me, it is set in modern times (the 80's) and is more violent, raw and sexual than any other vampire book I've read so far.

The book I am currently reading among others, "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova is brilliant for other reasons... The storytelling is amazing, it's so mysterious and intense. It's definitely a must read!

The Vampire Codex, one of the best for information. The author Michelle Belenger, is writing another one as well.
There is another one coming out from a different author on sang.vampires, but I have not heard if it's published or not yet.
Forgive me, her name is escaping me at the moment. But if anyone is interested lete me know, will mail ya her name.
There is another author Xaphaniel7, that is writing a book on vampirism and magicks and enegy healings, etc.But is still a work in progress. The man is a genius, so be on the lookout for that author.

My favorite truthful book was "Practical Vampirism for the Modern Vampyre" by Lady CG. it gave hints and explainations for the sanguine vampire. It taught me what substitutes for blood were available and also how to get access to blood.

I like the Vampire Codex too and the Anne Rice novels.

Here is a link to a class syllabus on Vampires taught at the University of Pittsburgh. Maybe the reading list will help you.

I am buying the vampire Bible here soon. very interesting. the goth bible is very interesting as well. it has a few interesting stories on vampires and the whole run around life of gothics.

I just got the psychic vampire … it is the revamped version of the old one and a good read so far.
Erotic vampire books I see “vampires among us” mentioned twice any more?

Im writing a thesis on vampires and its been a pain trying to sort fact and fiction. I have a few books I can recommened and one site that is amazing
The Vampire Encyclopedia-Matthew Bunson
Private Files of a Vampirologist: Case Histories & Letters -Jeanne K. Youngson
The Complete Vampire Companion: Legend & Lore of the Living Dead -Rosemary Ellen Guiley
Those proved to be very helpful, also look for other work by prominent vampirologists and dissertations such as one by Johann Christian Stock
Lastly http://www.sanguinarius.org/ has alot of info on it, it just needs to be sorted through. Enjoy

"Drawing Blood" and "Lost Souls" by Poppy Brite are homo-erotic vampire fiction written by a sanguin Vampyre.
"Sunglasses After DarK" by Nancy Collins is the first book in a series about Sonia Blue, a woman who was raped by a vampire, and nearly exsanguinated. She survived, and did'nt die, but was turned into a vamp. She goes after him, and any other dead boy who kills.
I have not read a book yet about sanguine Vampyres that has it right. "Psychic Vampyre Codex" is not that enlightening if you have knowledge of energy work, and have read Kenneth Grant or Don Webb. The concept of xeper originated in the Setian current.

Here is the announcement for the new book that was posted in our Council since Sylvere is a member there.

For those of you who may not have heard, Michelle Belanger, in conjunction with Llewellyn Publishers, is producing an anthology of essays written by members of the vampire community. If you pick up the book, you're sure to recognize names of several key people. I heard recently from the editor-in-chief that the book will hit the shelves in early September. I hope all of you will check it out.

According to Brett:

"The publication month for the book is September 2007, which means it should be ready for purchase at the beginning of the month.

"The book already has its own (basic, to be expanded) Amazon page! You can tell people they can already pre-order the book, either on Amazon or via llewellyn.com:"

As far as books already out I prefer
Practical Vampyrism For Modern Vampyres by Lady CG

She is a tad older and it is not so geared to one person's experience pertaining to their House. After all the non fiction ones are just opinion that comes from personal experiences. Lady CG has a forum called Smoke n Mirrors on the internet. You can probably find it if you type in her name. She is in her forties and been around awhile as opposed to some of the other writers of non fiction mentioned.

As far as non-fiction books go, I would have to say 'Monsters' by John Michael Greer is my favorite. It had a lot of information in it that I hadn't seen anywhere else before as well as a perspective that I really hadn't come across either.
For vampire stories, I would have to say that 'Carpe Juggulum' by Terry Pratchet is by far my favorite.
