now im not to positive about this, but i learned about Vlad "the dragon" Dracul in high school, and his story was always awesome everytime i heard it.

In mainstream cinema Dracula is like the father of vampires..

Is this true? if not, where did vampires begin?

There have been vampire-like creatures in myth and legend, almost from the start of record keeping. Vampire-type creatures are shown in pre-historic drawings on cave walls, as well as in hieroglyphs found from the ancient Egyptian period. Vlad the Impaler is simply the best known of the legends - the one with an actual name, if you will. And he was definitely a real, historical figure, who carried out the many actions he has become famous for. As for Vlad being the "original" vampire................. I think he's the best known, but not the original in the literal sense.

Vlad the Impaler is often credited with being the first "vampire"... if one is inclined to follow myths and legend.

The vampire is first and foremost, a creature born of mankind's imagination. Legend from all over the world speak of a life-sucking entity that either feasts on blood or drains the life-force of others.

I realize that I am a whelp, but Artemka has posted a rather inclusive article here on VR about Global Vampires of Myth and Legend. You might wish to read it for more information about this global archetype that has fascinated mankind for years.

Modern vampires, however... are another story, and I hold my own opinion about those of us who are.

yes, he was the first, which is why he is the earliest typical "vampire" that we hear of in myth and legend, and also fact and truth.

vlad tepes was known by many names... i suggest you research him more. :) he's a very interesting individual.

NNNNOOOOOOOOO

Vlad the impaler (count dracul)....

He was not the first of the vampyr, he was just the first to make the vampyr nation famous....well if not he, then whomever wrote of his deeds.

I have researched heavily into this and if Vlad the Impaler was the first, then why would the ancient sumerians (the one's who believed the annunaki were gods) have a name for vampyr....their name being akhkharu?

Do a search for Akhkharu on any good search engine and every link you find will lead you to something that is either about vampyr or about the annunaki and the ancient sumerians.

Seeing as how the sumerian empire was overthrown by a combination of the ancient egyptians and the romans, i cannot see how vlad the impaler could possibly have been the first vampyr.

Even the ancient egyptians spoke of the vampyr.

Search and you will find.

M

menerfecious- You mean a combination of the Asyrians and Babylonians? Akhkharu was just one of the annunaki, or travelers, to Sumer. I think we are still talking about cinema here, so when they make a movie, claiming that Marduk was the original vampire then we can look to the Sumerians.

yes Luciferrising I agree lilith and her sisters the seizers I don’t believe are first vampires just wishful linking. I find todays vast concept of vampire is being mixed to suit the authors needs I feel. You might as well say the aztec were vampires coz they had great bloody events … truth was they were making the race sick to brining there god back( and no that’s not a door open to say he was a vampire god lol)

No, He is a nice story, and he is in the vampire history, but is not the original. Looking through information on the beginning of vampires, We began as evil spirits, Then as sucubus , and other folklore, mythical creatures along our way to becoming the different types of vampires we have now.... We all seem to have that passion, and admire the hollywood type, seductive, never die, vampires....All I can tell you is look into this and see where the history, and our beginnings take you.

to me it make scence that the original vampire is adam's first wife...her name was...*thinks*....lilith...and the story goes that she wanted to b on top when they had sex but he wanted to b on top so he sent her away, and then eve came and when they had children lilith came back and bit them all and drank alot of their blood but didn't kill them, however if ur talking in the minstream of things yes dracula was the first vampire (i'm sorry if u already said in the main stream but i forgot the quesion -_-')

Hes definitely not the first. Im sure if you were to search as to who the 1st vamp was youd get many answers. To some Lilith was the first, in other parts of the world each place had their own ideas of the 1st vampyre. I'm not sure as to who was 1st & maybe we'll never know for sure. To each is own on what each person believes.....

Vlad was not the first by far, and he was an impaler but not necesarily a vampire. Cain's children, that's white wolf legend there, though supposedly Yaweh did curse Cain to"walk the earth and never die" for murdering his brother Abel. Lilith has often been described as a demon and often is rumuroed to be the first woman who refused to "lay under Adam" and even the snake in the garden. Many mythologies contain legends of what would be considered a vampire or vampyre.
According to wikipedia:
"Though the most famous vampire novel ever, Dracula was not the first. It was preceded and partly inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu's 1871 "Carmilla", about a lesbian vampire who preys on a lonely young woman. The image of a vampire portrayed as an aristocratic man, like the character of Dracula, was created by John Polidori in "The Vampyre" (1819), during the summer spent with Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley and other friends in 1816. The Lyceum Theatre, where Stoker worked between 1878 and 1898, was headed by the tyrannical actor-manager Henry Irving, who was Stoker's real-life inspiration for Dracula's mannerisms and who Stoker hoped would play Dracula in a stage version. Although Irving never did agree to do a stage version, Dracula's dramatic sweeping gestures and gentlemanly mannerisms drew their living embodiment from Irving........
Stoker ran across an intriguing word in the Romanian language: "Dracul", meaning "Devil". There was also a historic figure known as Vlad the Impaler, but whether Stoker based his character on him remains debated (see "Historical connections," below) and is now considered unlikely.....
Stoker came across the name Dracula in his reading on Romanian history, and chose this to replace the name (Count Wampyr) that he had originally intended to use for his villain. However, some Dracula scholars, led by Elizabeth Miller, have questioned the depth of this connection. They argue that Stoker in fact knew little of the historic Vlad III except for his nickname. There are sections in the novel where Dracula refers to his own background, and these speeches show that Stoker had some knowledge of Romanian history. Yet Stoker includes no details about Vlad III's reign, and does not mention his use of impalement. Given Stoker's use of historical background to make his novel more horrific, it seems unlikely he would have failed to mention that his villain had impaled thousands of people. It seems that Stoker either did not know much about the historic Vlad III, or did not intend his character Dracula to be the same person as Vlad III." You can read the full article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracula
I studied Dracula and other mythologies as a child and it has stuck with me all these years. Hope that clears up any misconceptions.

nosferatu was filmed before dracula and yes the story of Carmilla predates stoker's Dracula. There are also geek myths about a vampire like creature. I could be wrong but I dont recall any non-fiction writings referring to lilith or cain as a vampire like creature or drinking anyone's blood.

While Vlad Tepes was known for his great and terrible deeds as the ruler of Wallacia. I'm afraid that I've only found there to be one case in which Dracula feed on the blood of others.

While in his forest of the impailed as it is so reffered. Dracula is said to have feed on the blood of those who were impaled there by collecting the blood into a bowl and dipping his bread into the blood of his enemies.

Thanks for the kind words ChartreuseDreams :)

Vlad the impaler wasn't a vampire and he certainly wasn't a Count.

He was a Prince of Wallachia (twice) and a ruthless warlord long before Romania existed.

He happened to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's book.

If you define a vampire as blood drinking risen from the dead types, I would think the earliest were the Brahmaparusha of India - these night creatures, living in cemetaries and rose from the grave, created by an untimely death, they could could possess people, turn into owls or bats and drank from a blood filled skull - there are wall paintings of the Nepalese "Lord of Death" drinking his fill of blood which have been dated at 3000BC

The recommended 'Akhkharu' search will reveal a fictional breed of Mesopotamian vampires, will find that the author is a member on this site called akhkharu - kewl huh

My bet is the Brahmaparusha were the first, but then I'm not done reading yet :)

Following a google search on Akhkharu i have found the following.

Taken from the urilia text.....

"And the AKHKHARU may be summoned, which sucketh the blood from a Man, as it desires to become a fashioning of Man, the Blood of KINGU, but the AKHKHARU will never become Man."

available at: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~jasen01/texts/Urilia.html

"Vampire-like spirits called the Lilu are mentioned in early Babylonian demonology, and the bloodsucking Akhkharu even earlier in the Sumerian mythology."

No one knows where vampires orginated. Vlad was not a vampire. He was a sterotype used by Bram Stoker for his book about a vampire...nothing more. There are many views in the community from Lilith to Cain, to Aliens on various levels. From the Watchers and you name it. A V-5 virus and symbiont theories. We simply do not know and we debate this topic endlessly and still it comes down to what some believe from their own researches or belief systems might be the facts. Lilith is one of the prevalent beliefs but there is no concrete evidence to say this is so. Not everyone believes she was the first wife of Adam or for that matter she even existed. It's all an enigma.

I don't believe that Vlad was a vampire, he was a warrior. I believe the "vampire" was from people such as Bathory!

I heard that the first stories of the vampire goes a long way back in Russia or deep in the eastern europe. I learn that Vlad is short for Vladimir and Vladimir I think came from Russia country. I could be wrong.

References of vampires can be found in ancient cultures. While Vlad the Impaler was quite a frieghtening man to his enemies, the legend of the vampire predates him.

No, I don't think Vlad was the first...

When it comes to the "oldest" who has died and "reborn," I would think that the Egyptian god Osiris takes the cake.

LuciferRising,

No-one wll be able to provide the tablets to you: as usual someone posts an idea on a website and its copied again and again until its taken as fact.

In this case the globalnet link seems to have come from here a white wolf site - which says the orginal source was the necromicon which was written in 720 was 'burned' in the year 1050. Of course the Sumerians were known to have been using clay or stone tablets at the time, yet still someone managed to burn it.

The crystalinks.com is a little confusing because it links to wikipedia to talk about Lilu and Akhkharu but, when you go wikipedia, they aren't mentioned.

but anyway all of these 'creatures' are AD can anyone find any vampires BCE?

Vlad the Impaler isn't the original vampire, the history of vampires go way back to the beginning of civilization as far as I know. Though he is the most known and the one you hear about first, probably because Bram Stoker based his Dracula on him.

Look up names like Liltih or Elizabeth Báthory, they are pretty known in Vampire mythology as well...

Dracula was not a vampire until Bram Stoker used him as the basis for the novel. There is a woodcut that depicts Vlad feasting on the body parts of his victims amidst the forest of his impaled victims, but that's more akin to cannibalism and was probably propaganda. Polidori's vampyre was based on Lord Byron, but that doesn't make Byron a vampire either.

I have seen a lot of people say that Bram Stoker made Dracula a vampire, but that is on partially true. Bram didn't make him into a vampire. Dracula's own people and culture made him one. Bram just took these stories and made him a larger-than-life vampire.

Plaese may I suggest that people who are confusing Vlad [the impaler] and Bram Stoker's Dracula read Jane Stoddard's interview of Bram Stoker himself published in British Weekly, 1 July 1897 and reproduced in part only here

and there is a pretty good account of Vlad's actual life here

It isn't really a confusion of the two, yet a lack of research into them, as seperate entities. However, Bram's Dracula is still partially based on Vlad. Vlad Tepes was known as Dracula. It was not his name but nickname to seperate him from his father, who had the same name. If we want to get technical, perhaps we should look to the Turks and their myths. The horible torture Dracula experienced and wittnessed made him the monster we know him as. It was the now Romanian people that saw him as a vampire, since they already had a belief in such creatures. Bram just took these beliefs and kept the name.

Its best not to get too technical on these things, after all in the time frame we are talking about Turkey didn't exist (it was the Ottoman Empire) neither did Romania (Vlad was Prince of Wallachia)

Vlad's 'nickname' Dracula was given to him (depending on what your take is on this) either describing him - it means the 'evil one' in Romanian/Wallachian - or 'Order of the Dragon' in latin, to which Vlad was thought to belong

LuciferRising, please can I ask the source of your information about Vlad's subjects ever considering him a vampire, I have studied Vlad for quite a long tme now - visited his castles and museums dedicated to him and so forth - and have never come across this.

There has just been a thread about whether Vlad was a monster or not. Most people now (as did his country folk of that time) consider him a hero and not a monster.

First I have to get back to every publisher of text books, so I can tell them to stop calling Dracula's capturers the Turks. LOL
The fact that I didn't state I was quoting anything ment I really don't have proof. It is just the nature of the people, now Romanians, that lead me to believe they could see someone like Vlad as a vampire. If indeed many of his more famous stories are propaganda, then I could see how the average villager could come to that conclusion. Heck, if you aren't burried properly, you would probably become a vampire. (Shades of Foxwothy?) If you disrepect a family member before dying, you will probably become a vampire... and so forth.
I haven't been on any fancy tours, or own the finest in antique books, but I did have a Greatgrandmother, born in Targoviste. Just remebering her "bed time stories" can bring me to the conclusion.

Yup, that's why its never good to get technical in here - actually I am impressed that you are taking the trouble to actually read the thread.

I think a lot of people would get confused if the publishers started talking about the Ottoman Empire, so they use Turkey / Romania and aresa that people understand.

LOL at the 'fancy tours' for a time I lived very close to Transylvania - that's all.

I think we do agree that, Vlad was not the original vampire, which I think is the subject of the thread (its been so long I lose track)

Vampire-like spirits called the Lilu are mentioned in early Babylonian demonology, and the even more ancient bloodsucking Akhkharu in Sumerian mythology. These female demons were said to roam during the hours of darkness, hunting and killing newborn babies and pregnant women. One of the demons, named Lilitu, was later adapted to Jewish demonology as Lilith.

In India, tales of vetalas, ghoul-like beings that inhabit corpses, are found in old Sanskrit folklore. A prominent story tells of King Vikramāditya and his nightly quests to capture an elusive vetala. The vetala legends have been compiled in the book Baital Pachisi. The vetala is an undead creature, who like the bat associated with modern day vampirism, hangs upside down on trees found in cremation grounds and cemeteries.

The hopping corpse is an equivalent of the vampire in Chinese tradition; however, it consumes the victim's life essence (qì) rather than blood.

The Ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet in one myth became full of bloodlust after slaughtering humans and was only sated after drinking alcohol colored as blood.

The strix, a nocturnal bird that fed on human flesh and blood is mentioned in Roman tales. The Romanian word for vampires, strigoi, is derived from the word, as is the name of the Albanian Shtriga, but the myths about those creatures show primarily Slavic influence.[citation needed]

As an example of the prominence of similar legends in later times, it can be noted that 12th century English historians and chroniclers Walter Map and William of Newburgh recorded accounts of revenants that arguably bear some resemblance to East European vampires.

The vampire myth as we know it is most strongly rooted in East European (particularly Slavic) folklore. Here, vampires are usually revenants of suicide victims, criminals or evil sorcerers, though in some cases a vampire could pass his vampirism onto his innocent victims. It was also thought that a victim of a cruel, untimely or violent death was susceptible to becoming a vampire. Vampires were accused of killing people, often by drinking blood, but also by throttling, or sitting on them to prevent breathing. In this folklore, a vampire could be destroyed by cutting off its head, by driving a wooden stake into its heart, or by burning the corpse.

There have been quite a few references to such things as the dead sea scrolls, the akhkharu, the sumerians and babylonians.....I have done some research and only wish i could find the sites i was looking at when i did that research as it does mention one named ka-in (the first born son of enki according to the sumerian legends) and I wonder if the jews could have taken that and used it in their interpretations within the dead sea scrolls.

No matter what though, it seems very odd that the sumerians, assyrians, ancient egyptians, babylonians and jews all had vampyr myths that basically pointed to the annunaki and the akhkharu.

These legends were dated before the birth of christ and therefore would be jaded by time.

If i can find the links to the pages i had found most interesting in my search for anwers to the questions of the annunaki and akhkharu myths, i will certainly post them either here or (if this post is closed by then) in a new post of my making.....please watch this space.

One thing that can be agreed upon, there are many early accounts of vampirism. We should take into account that fact that many of these myths accur around the same time, whilst durring a time when travel to these different parts of the world was unheard of. Bram did not write of the first, yet he wrote of some thing accepted for a very long period of time.

Be a little wary of quoting Wikipedia on a specific vampire, the reference to Akhkharu is shown without citation - that means someone just put it in there, it has been challenged and a 'citation required' marker is now there. If you look back into the discussion and history part of that article you will see there have been massive 'edit wars' going on inside that very article with people trying to put heir point of view as fact.

menerfecious, I agree that all cultures across the globe have vampire legends, that look similar to each others on one or two points. I cannot see how they all point to the very specific vampire type "akhkharu"

Without wishing to drag "akhkharu" all around again, I think those folk are also agreeing that Vlad was either not a vampire or was not the first vampire.

Can anyone predate the Brahmaparusha myth 3000 BC ?
