One summer day I sat reading. The front door open, windows open, it was a quiet Saturday morning. As I read I heard my name called from outside. I went tu the door wondering who was there. When I looked out no one was there. I returned and started reading again, thinking my mind played a trick on me. Then I heard my name called again. This time I went outside thinking someone was screwing with me. No one was there. I went back tu reading feeling uneasy. Again I heard my name called from outside. This time I was sure someone was screwing with me, so I went out the back door and came around tu the front. No one was there! I ran, and I du mean RAN, around the house trying tu catch whoever was messing with me. There was no one there. I searched everything, bushes, under the porch, everywhere. There was no one there. I went back tu reading and never heard it again.

Years later I was reading a book called "Seth Speaks", which would make a fine thread lol, and a part of that book explained what hearing your name called was. It said that if a person was thinking about you very emotionally that you could sense that by hearing your name called. Has this happened tu anyone else? What du you all think of that explination?

I have similar things happen to me. Its worst when I am home alone for the night, I always thought it was my own mind playing tricks on me as well. Sometimes I'll be sitting in class, it will get real quite and I'll here someone whisper my name. I'll look around but no one has their head up from their papers, I hate that because I think someone in my class is screwing with me!

I think the key word is sense your name and not actually hear it. Either you have a very active mind or a narcosis of some kind. It is possible to hear your name being called. It happened to me twice but it is not something I would mention outloud.

The voice I heard was not a whisper, it was of a normal volume, quite distinct.

Thats pretty spooky.

It's strange that you say that it's because someone is thinking deeply emotionally of you hence why you hear you're name...I believe it could be possible, or maybe you're thinking deeply of the person thats supposed to be thinking of you?

& why not say it outloud, this is for the paranormal ;)

It's been suggested I'm cracking up lol, no, this was not a voice in my head, I heard it come from out side, very clear and distinct.

lol! You're not cracked up, and you're not the only one who has had this happen. It will probably happen again sometime in your life time, something I noticed though is when it happens to me I only hear my name called once then maybe and hour passes before I hear it again. How long do you think it was before you heard your name called again?

I thought the books explanation was as good as any, that or I had a very very fast sneaky bastard screwing with me. I'll offer another idea. Is it possible that a passed relative was trying tu get my attention?

Thats what I've always believed it was, that is was an outside ethric looking in. Not just a relative, but anyone on the "outside"

I like the books explaination too, I think it's a clever explaination. & Im sure you'd of seen the person if there was one that was running around you're house & why would anyone have any reason to screw with you in that way...If it's a relative, did you recognize the voice?

This all happened in five tu ten minutes, total.

Wow, its all really drawn out when it happens to me, and its always a kind of loud whisper. One that I can never recognize.

No I did not know the voice and oddly, even at the time, I couldn't tell you if it was male or female.

Similar things have happened to me, you know when it does it the first time and you think it's your imagination and then it goes on and on.

I've thought before that I'd heard my name called. Much like Tu, I didn't know the name and couldn't have told you if the speaker was male or female.

It's an odd experience.

If it didn't sound male or female that pushes me towards the paranormal, thats just...Creepy.

I have heard my Grandmother saying my name. Sometimes I'm not sure id it's out loud, or in my head, but I know it's her.

It did not use my full name, I just heard a clear and distinct "Michael".

I think your bonkers....I mean that in a loving way of course...lol j/k it has happened to me a few times before.

It is unfortunate that this kind of thinking is labelled psychotic particularly when linked to something like hearing voices in a metaphorical sense.

Your story reminds me a little of Jack Nicholson in, "The Shining and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" were no-one believed him until it was too late.

It does remind me of a quote from somewhere: "You're only jealous because the voices are talking to me"

thats happened to me as well. they say when spirits call ur name u should never tell them it is u. u should ask who is looking? or somehting like that.

Ok I must be crazy, my mother and I can make eachother call one other by doing a similar thing I hear her call my name.

i have had that happen to me when i was younger..and sometimes it still happens.
it bugs the heck out of me..cause ill go upstairs and ask what my mom needs and it will turn out she didnt call for me

I've heard my name spoken before...on several occasions...but not called...it's like someone was just behind me and said my name...it's creepy...

Interestingly there are several cultures that have reasons as to why people hear their name called. One is it can be a death call, others that it signifies change.

I have heard mine called in past, and it was right before a very significant change in my life. Good topic.

When I lived in Jersey we had this black paved road that ran down the middle of our housing community.

Well one evning I was walking home on said road trying to beat sunset in fear of (mother) and I heard my voice being said..
and it wasw not my nickname it was my full first name which stoped me in my tracks..

I looked around and didnt see anyone..started walking agian..and once agian..okay that was what started the panic.. so needless to say by the time I made it home it had followed me..and when I reatched the door it left..

its never happend sence..but its still there on my mind when Im alone..

That is odd you say this I have had the same thing happen a few times now. I was told it was the spirits or some one close to u thinking of you. I have actually heard spirits in the wind call my name or tell me things will be ok. Or perhaps you have a very active mind and or sensitive to things could also be commincations from other through mind

I've experienced this not long before my mother passed away....what's so bad was when I heard my name, my wife heard her name called. We both looked at each other and asked "did you hear that?"
We were both thinking we were going coocoo when we realized that it was our own names that we heard, but nobody was around. I pretty much did the same thing that Tu did....searched outside....around the house, but nobody was out there.

My grandpa used to say that when you heard your name called.......not to answer......as it was bad luck.....as in....a death was soon to be heard about.

I normally have that happen to me when I am trying to fall asleep. I guess it is very common, a sort of brain hiccup, much like deja vu. But, there was one time I couldn't explain. A friend of mine had just dropped me off at home. I went to lie down when I heard my name. This time I asked "What," and got a reply of "Never mind." I found out the next day that my friend, a male friend, sat outside in his car, contemplating whether he should let me know about his feelings for me. That time I knew it was someone else saying my name, and not some pre-remembered, replay of a voice, in my head.

I don't think your crazy in any way. I've had similar experiences.

it has happened to me, i was at home waiting for my friend to pick me up and no one was with me, i decided to watch t.v. and 3 mins into the show i was watching i heard some one say isabella which is my first name i do not go by. i chose to ignore the vocice and it called my name agian more agressive and louder, i choose to put headphones in to drowned out the calling. But it was like the voice was in my head like it was in my mind. The voice called my name over and over and then the door rang and the vocice said my name one last time and it ecohed

hmm.. very interesting theory. I think it might be close to right too. Though like most things it could happen for more than one reaon and then only have to be confused about which reason it was for that time. If it really is true about the emotions, i feel bad for my love, though he might be used to hearing his name by now. lol

I wonder if it could possibly be the same reasoning as to why it seems like someone turned on a very bad P.A. system in your head and was talking to you.. The voice isn't yours and it sure sounds like its' comming through your ears.. but is it? The only other option I can give, which probably doesn't happen that often, is for a spirit, ghost, or person with power to be taunting or teasing you by "saying" your name. nasty little rascals.

I'm glad i'm not the only one though. And with the diagnosis of psychotic by one person's post, i'd best not mention that i hear a lot more than just my name being spoken, though that's the normal one.

Have you tried concentrating on the voice, what does it sound like, musical, gender, raspy, child-like, older? etc. It might be possible to figure out whose voice it is, if it's the emotional echo or loved one passed.

I have never had this wxperience but I certainly don't discount it.

It reminds me of the stories in the Bible when God "called someone's name". Kind of spooky in my book. The people who were called rarley had an easy time of it!

Perhaps it's as the book explained, perhaps it's spirits calling from "the other side", perhaps something else entirely.

With the emotional call, that has happened to me on 2 different occasions. One was a family member that had a problem, the other was my closest friend.

I think this is more to do with the deep connections we make.

I've had this happen before, but it has always been while I was listening to music. I'd turn the volume down (or take my headphones off if I was wearing them) and listen, but no one would say anything else, then as soon as I started listening to the music, it would start again.

I have had this happen to me, i was very young when it did though and at the time did not think anything of it, now though i wonder, at such a young age who could have been thinking about me emotionally like that

during my anarexic years and still to this day i heard and hear my name called alot (i think by my mother) so that expalins alot, thanks for sharning that!

Wait, did someone just call? Yes it does get that bad at times. Perhaps this is the real reason behind the myths, we were just to awake to realize it.

Happened to me on more than one occasion....I'll hear my name when I know for a fact that no one else is around, and of course, nothing will be there. It's kinda eerie......I don't really have an explanation for it.

Seth Speaks is an interesting read. I have had my name called once. But it was in a house I was sure was haunted.

I don't doubt the name is a result of a close one calling your name.

I have may name called a number of times and no one has been there. But I don't beleive it was some thinking strong emotional thoughts about me. I found it to be spirits calling my name and hoping that I would acknowledge them as it then gives them more power because I answered them.

I still get teh odd name being called but I ignore it now so as to not lend a spirit more power and grant them the ability to use that power against me

I have had this happen on numerous occasions, even been touched. The worst was someone shaking my foot as I was sleeping to wake me up.

I have come to learn that this was my guides, telling me that its time for me to move a bit quicker down my spiritual path. In time I met people that gave me the information and understood what it meant.

The same with my pagan/wiccan name was whispered in my ear. So it could have been a guide, or perhaps an ancestor letting you know they were around... its one theory anyway.

This has happened to me as well, in different circumstances. One is that my mother's house is full of spirits that have been around long enough to know us..sometimes they call me. And if they don't, other spirits have.

And also, when someone I am close to is in an emotional way..not always distress, just highly emotional, and they think about me, I hear them call my name.I don't think its a bad thing, I don't think you are nuts...just try not to let it bother you if it happens again.

Maybe someone around where you live has the same name as you, and you heard someone calling them....

YES! Wow thats very interesting, and i think its pretty common too. There ahev been instances where i've heard my name called, not indistinctly clear and on its own, more like integrated into background noise. Its not very loud even if its shouted but you can still hear it, you know that you're being called by your name at the least, that is pretty cool though! You learn something new everyday!

I was laying out in the hammock at our summer house in Payson, Az.

I was alone, and throwing bird see crying my socks off, cos we were selling the place. It was to be the last time I am able to just go up there alone.

Anyway, I heard my name being called out into the backyard in the orchard. I heard barking, and heard like someone whistling. Mind you it was like 2 in the afternoon. Most of my neighbors used there places as vacation houses, and no one was there. So it could not have been anyone else.

I walked to the back of the house, and walked to the garden, and peeked out into the orchard, and they were calling my name again. I swore I was hearing my grandfather. I looked in the corner, and I could see my dogs that have passed on around the time he did, and I saw him. Whistling at the birds. I got closer, and he was gone.

yeh i have many times.... and i usually know though who called my name i can actually hear there voice calling me... the persons voice although there not around...

It happened to me once when I was coming back from school, I got off the bus and I started walking back home when I hear somebody calling my name... I stopped and looked back but there was nobody...

And some days ago I heard my name again in my house... (Now I live alone) I was upstairs and it was like somebody was downstairs and called my name through the stairs.... That was spooky because I knew I was alone....

This happened a lot to me when i was a child, i'd not long lost my dad.... and i remember it as clear as day his voice , calling my name whilst i was at shool in the playground.....I remember telling my mom and she passed it off as God , i guess that was her best explanation. and one that settled me at the time.

But in my adult years yes i still hear it ... Not as often . and i couldn't say if it was my dad or not...

Strange but interesting.

My parents are separated, since when I was almost two years old. At nine, My father kidnapped me, and carried me away from my mom... So far, that she had to work an entire year in a supermaket, in order to have the money for the trip (to get me).

In that year, I used to hear my mom voice, calling my name... I remember I felt like hypnotized... and used to go out of the house, like if I was follow the voice... Of course, my mom was not there...

Several years after, my only brother has a heart illness, and he was operated and he has now a by pass for the rest of his life... I remember in those times, before the surgery, I used to hear my mother crying... In the noon and night, I went many times to her room to ask her whats going on, why are you crying? But she was not crying...

Of course, Ive many therapists along my life, and in this two opportunities, therapist said that Im hyper sensitive, and I was in a stressed emotive moment...

That is the only explanation Ive got. But, I cant deny the fact, if I am Hyper- sensitive, then it might be possible to "feel" my mom´s feelings...

Harpia, that is an excellent point that sometimes these thing happen when we are in a mode to protect ourselves or our loved ones.

Other stessors might make us more "open" to having this experience perhaps?

I have had this happen to me a lot. Ever since I was little. More so now than when I was younger. Although, I've had some strange things happen to me since right before Christmas so I can't tell if it has anything to do with that or not. Half the time I feel like I'm losing my mind when it happens. Lately it's been a male voice. It happens anywhere I go. I could be at the mall, or in my office, anywhere. I was sitting at my desk a couple of months ago (I work from home) and my husband was watching tv. I heard my name called very distinctly and I went out into the living room and asked my husband what he wanted. He said he did'nt say anything. It's creepy and frustrating at the same time.

Indeed Liebe, I do believe, there are certain times when we are more "open" to this kind of "comunication"?

yes it has happened to me. not in awhile but it used to be often.

I have heard my name called over the years and my kids have heard it and me answering. When I was living in Georgia I heard my name but I had just gotten into bed so I ignored it and all of a sudden I was quickly rolled to the left and then the right and back onto my back. I was surprised but not scared. So I yelled out, " what do you want?"...got no answer so I went to sleep and quite frankly since that time haven't heard anymore voices that I can recollect but I had heard them over many years.

The therapist will say hearing your name called is a sign of anxiety. Been told this by one, lol. They don't generally believe in anything that might be thought of as paranormal for the most part. There are exceptions of course but I haven't run into any yet except one. One psychic said one of the voices was from a Nun and don't remember the connection it was so long ago and the other person who was calling was my maternal grandmother. Heard the grandmother thing at a mini seminar in orange county when a well-known psychic from England came over and was speaking at a metaphysical center and being followed at the time by a reporter from a local tv show. He was there with him as well as this man's wife. He called up my daughter who was under 18 and did a reading. He was a trance channelor. Has three entities that speak through him. One is very Irish...this one was speaking and then he turned to me and said your grandmother watches over you and it was this same one. I had been taking quilting classes and my Mother a couple of weeks prior was talking about her Mother had worked in a sewing room for a living and we were looking at a quilt top she had made. So when the psychic said grandmother I said, "which one?"
He said, "the one who sews." Now of course many people do that but my other grandmother who was also passed did not really sew at all. She ran restaurants and never did that for a living and since it had been so recently that we had been talking about my maternal grandmother working in the sewing room, I shivered and got goose bumps all over.

Wow! Yes, I have heard it. I have even thought it was my daughter calling me , or when I was a girl my mother.......funny thing is ,they were not home when I heard it. PLus at times I even was not alone and heard it anyway. Never gave it a whole lot of thought really , freaked me out for a moment or two ...but went on in what I was doing.

There was an old saying once about hearing your name called three times. I think it was one of my uncles who told it to me when i was younger. I was told that hearing your name called in a undistinctable voice was the voice of death trying to draw you away from all that familiar to you. Drawing you away and into its hunger.

i used to hear my name being called from nowhere when i was a little kid... now i don't hear anything at all. back then, i wasn't really talking to anyone, i was kind of the quiet person who never spoke a word... so i guess i made friends with the invisble people. LOL! no seriously though, every time i heard my name called, it sounded like my mom or dad. it was never a friend or anything. it was weird.

I think this has probably happened to a lot more people then let on but most probably shake it off telling them selves it's kids playing or someone else with the same name. Nobody likes being out somewhere or worse home alone and thinking they hear something. It's much easier to chalk things up to Logic then accepting that instead we may be hearing someone call to us.

How many times has some one a friend or family memeber popped into your mind only for the phone to ring moments later and that person be on the other end. We always say "Weird, you know I was just thinking of you." What if this is just an extension of that.

I was always quiet when I was young as a child and I would here me mother's voice speak my name but when I found her and asked her she always said she didn't say anything although I never knew how common this is until now a very nice discussion

I have that happen all the time! I'll be walking down a deserted street (where I know no one living there) and hear my name or as you said home alone and here my name... its confusing and freaky but I think nothing of it

Please excuse my absence, I've been banned for a day. Someone spoke of hearing your name called three times means "death" has come for you. That happened 20 years ago, death must be awful slow.

Yes, I have had that happen to me before. Although I've never heard that explanation for it- it really does make sense. Our minds are more powerful than we sometimes realize.

I was just catching up reading the posts and a thought struck me.. rather hard actually.. ow... anyway; What if one of the possibilities was yourself, past or future calling to you? Possible both subconsciously.

That I've heard of before- especially in times of grave danger being near. Your past or future self calling out to warn you.

I think the explanation makes sense. I've heard my name several times. I'm not sure if it's from someone that you're close to per se. My belief is that it's a loved one who has passed on trying to reach you, just to let you know that they are there and they're looking out for you. That's my opinion.

It has happened to me also, but typically it will be a voice that I recognize. Although, it sometimes sounds like a whisper while it sometimes sounds as if the person is yelling, almost for help. It scares me sometimes, cuz i start to think that they are being hurt.

yea my mother and i both on several occasions heard eachother call one another... i also hear my grandmother and others call my name. i never thought i was nutz but i knew something wasnt right. a couple of times i have ben dreaming and heard and felt someone talking into my ear, of course i woke up and looked around for some one and no one was there.

i think that quite possibly could be one good theory. i know that i have had similar situations happen and sometimes, i could actually tell who it was. my fiance and i used to put this to the test when there was a few hundred miles btwn us. and i think b/c of the deep connection we had, it was easy to tell when the other really in need. there is so much of the the human brain that is unknown what its use is, why doubt it as a possibility?

I have in the past had similar experiances, hearing my name when noone is around or no one has spoken, it sounds like a very resonable explination nad would make sence.
