I was reading something on another site and it brought up the higher potential for violence among a vampiric lifestyle. Part of it was the attraction of those with a criminal nature to the darker style of it, but beyond that was the potential for personal violence. Not being a vampire myself, I was wondering if this is true?

While there are certainly lifestyles that could do so, I’m not so sure this is one. Assuming they were referring to a Sang couple, it seems to me that the search for a donor, in that situation, would lead to some knowledge of those involved at least as much as any ordinary person making a date.

Do you feel that this lifestyle automatically lends itself to a higher danger for violence toward either party? If so, why please?

(I apologize for being unable to locate the site again to provide the link)

It is pretty similar to the mistake people make about the BDSM lifestyle. It's not angry, passionate, destructive violence. There are of course, people who feel the urges that are satisfied by either but do not know how to keep it safe and enjoyable. There are also those who try to mask violent urges in something that has gained validity over the years. When it comes down to it, both are trying to find a way to satisfy certain needs or urges and have found an enjoyable way to do so rather than through violence. Those who call either a violent practice do not, have not, or maybe cannot see the various shades of grey.

I agree DarkWolfman, no culture is safe from violence but I do not see why the vampire lifestyle automatically exposes one to more risk. No more so than anyone else beginning a relationship.

I feel that the vampire community is just not understandable to a lot of people, therefore it is going to get "crapped on" when bad things happen.
I've seen christian church groups become violent....it just didn't make the newspapers when it happened.

Personally, I'd have to say the opposite is true. It is experience that those that repress there deepest desires are the ones who eventually lash out. I repress little and savor much.

I think it would depend on the way blood is taken. If blood is taken by someone cutting another person with a blade of some sort, that could be considered violent by some people. Others it can be considered erotic.

People form ideas within their mind. These ideas can create something totally different from the way things actually are. Hollywood movies can influence the ideas making them an unrealistic persona. After you’ve seen someone bite the neck out of someone, wouldn’t that be kind of violent?

I wouldn’t say that the lifestyle, in a whole, leads itself to a higher danger for violence, but I do think that some parts of the life style is taken too far by extremist.
What I mean by extremist are people who kill in the name of Vampiric beliefs. That within itself can give people a bad taste in their mouth; especially if the topic is taboo anyway.

You also have murders and serial killers who have been linked to some sort of ‘dark’ path or have done something that people consider ‘vampire’-ish. Some people feel more comfortable if they can pin it on something other than what the issue is.
“Oh, he was into that dark stuff.” Or “They dressed as ‘Goth’”.

Not to mention, the press and their catchy titles when things come up in the news.

There is violence in every walk of life. Bad things are easier to link with things that seem dark, dangerous, unacceptable and different. Trust between both parties is a must. Bad things happen. That’s the facts of life. I don’t think it has anything to do with a group as a whole, but more so as individuals that make up the world in general.

I think, in general, some people like their stereotypes. They see something from afar, like in the media, and they let that impression be their entire view on the subject. With subjects that are working their way out of the status of taboo, many people simply let the status quo reign.

Although I personally do not believe that sharing blood in any way shape or form is a particularly sane or sanitary thing to do, I see no reason why people can't engage in any kind of fantasy relationship they want as long as it harms noone! Many prominent psychiatrists and psychologists believe that a healthy sexual relationship can be maintained by indulging in a little kinkiness now and again!

Dark Greetings...

As many have said...
violence is recurrent in all kinds of societies, cultures and people, amongst the lowliest of creatures,
and even amongst us vampyres...

Violence can vary from person to person, from belie to belief, and some are more drawn or propense to it than others,
physical violence is common...as is verbal violence,
it can control , and it can be controled,
and can serve as a tool, as a weapon,
or as a mere diversion....

it always has, will be in most beings...
as long as there are the so called "feelings" included....

Lord Markus

Not to sound redundant or anything, but you will find violence everywhere you go, in every culture you study, in every religion, etc etc etc.

I think some people find the vampyric nature violent because of the way they live and hunt for food. It can be very violent at times.

The media will embrace this violence and make it seem worse than it is. Hollywood has a tendency to do this as well with the movies they make.

i think those kind of individuals would be drawn to s&m bondage and other sub-cultures just as much as they would be to vampirism.
i think it's just a personal preference in general you will notice dominant people are attracted to cultures that have some kind of controlling power just as submissive people are attracted to cultures where they can be controlled and have someone to give them orders.

My first thought was to say that I have noticed many vamps with a hair temper. But then I thougth again and realised that there are just alot of people in general like that...lack of self-control and self-responsibility. I would think that this lifestyle would require even more control than the usual, but apparently some seem tothink it gives them license to bahave badly.

I love easy questions.

Vampires are PREDATORS. As such, any lifestyle that seeks to embrace/emulate similar predators, will have a required increase in violence.

Also, look at the kind of people who embrace this lifestyle. Angry, ignored, cast off members of society who band together to find strength in their pain.

Violence comes naturally to us because of the abuse we have suffered, mentally, emotionally, and most importantly, physically.

There are going to be immature and hostile people in any sub culture. When they act out, they do more harm than all those who condem us. I do not believe that vampires are more violent than average, only those who are violent are more visable to the media.

Denial of an emotion such as violence is I believe what causes extreme violent behavior.

I would say that this thread is similiar to a discussion by John Lash in his book The Tai Chi Journey.

In it he brings up the point about delequents being trained the martial arts....and how violence increased. But those students who were taught the philosophy as well as the moves were more reserved, less violent, and more willing to get past a situation calmly.

Same goes for western views taking away the philosophies of the Eastern disciplines and all you have is a bunch of trained fighters for no higher purpose seeking to benifit their lives, as those who are living the diciplines they learn.

I venture to say that same goes to the vampiric culture. We have so many posts on how to gain power, preform magicks, and awaken, and blood feed. But where are the philosophies intertwined with those skills to add the meaning and give the restraint, "just because we can, doesn't mean we should" sort of mind.

So even though the sources are available, there exists no restraint for those zelous individuals who just want to suck blood, and cast spells using the sacrificed blood from their flesh. And ties into how much discipline they have to live up to something such as the Black Veil. Or any other code, because lets face it. The ten commandments and the Black veil have a lot in common, they are great for those who want to live by structure.

It just should be a unification in our societies that brings the need for restraint, and responsibility of the uses of the power, to keep unwarrented violence away from us.

I very much agree with you on that fact. Point is, there is no reason that people shouldn't act according to their instinct, and desire, but there are ways, even the most sadistic of us act in, where they are not a danger to the image of the whole, but commit atrocities.

Unfortunatly I have run across a very sadistic individual who blended chaos magick, sodomy and murder together, and yes i did report him to the proper authorities. But the fact remains. He was acting out of instinct. His goals were power, and what he sucked from his victems was that power.

However, there are ways to gain power without taking lives of others, to use him as an extreme example. But Donors are to be always willing, and never forced. Murder, Rape, and Needless Violence should be curbed in the soul before it effects the world of flesh.

It doesn't matter what path one comes from at this point, just merely that one walks a path, that wont land him in the headlines of the paper as worlds modern vampire killer.

Its also a matter of honour and pride. if you have honour in yourself that you are upstanding in your view points to the level where you would not commit such petty crimes in persuits of the spiritual then leave those to the mundane world where that is all they have to solve their wants.

If they have power, they should be able to use it according to their wishes. Instead of mindlessly slaughtering and bringing unnessicary violence.

my fellow house member "BaoloDrown" makes a good point even though not everything that we do is not safe it does not make it a bad thing in fact i think it can be quite good for some individuals being in such a culture is a release for them i would much rather see individuals in concent of eachother biting and sharing blood than i would seeing murder, rapes or anything of the negative nature and it makes me think if in fact people of a criminal nature are drawn to our vampiric culture that would mean there is a area that is not within the guidelines where such activities of an illegal nature would take place.

Yes, but can we have real vampire role models, not just sensles violence from the movie archtype?

I mean yea there is the lady from house Khepheru (dont have the proper spelling) who has done remarkable work for the community. But we do need those in the community who know those awakening to help them out by getting them past the self destructive things that awakening usually brings.

I would have to ask, is this article referring to the "vampiric lifestyle", which is mostly made up of (as someone stated previously), those considered outside of societal norms? If it is, I can see why someone not directly involved with the "lifestlye" might consider it more violent. A lot of the people fit the profile for those who would become violent - they've been picked on and abused because they're "different" and could lash out in reaction.

(Please note here, I said someone not directly involved could see it this way and I am not personally stating this is my opinion - there is a difference!)

On the other hand, you have those affected by vampirism - those who gather energy from external sources due to a lack in their own body. There's nothing violent about this and the majority of people that I, personally, have met in this community are not violent.

It's always best to point out, one is a lifestyle and therefore a choice, while the other is something one is born with and definitely is not a choice! Obviously as several have pointed out, there is violence everywhere - that is the trend of society, but being affected by vampirism doesn't mean one is more violent.

I believe there is actually LESS violence in the world today than there was in times past.

It is more the media which seems to make it seem as there is more. And I will agree that people with bad intentions tend to follow dark paths (ie: murders and rapists, etc.) as much as they would a good path (ie: priests who molest or corrupt politicians, etc.). So every aspect of our human-culture, I feel, is infested with bad people which almost always bring a negative stereotype to things which are not well known.

It was once said, and which still stands true, that "The lower the IQ, the greater the tendency for violence." Basically, this translates down to: the more one knows, the more tollerant one is. I guess I could turn that around and say: "Educate the world, create more peace and harmony." Just my 2¢

Violence is in all parts of the culture, Vampyre's may be no exception. But the general society deems this to be vampiric for they shun those who do not fit in. a form of dicrimination. Yet I believe that others in power have more evil than our society.

I suppose its all in how we deal with situations, from the information that we have at the time of actions....

So it becomes dependant on the person making their choice to act openly violent or to let something slide. From personal experience, then Im going to comment on Id let a person do anything they want to to me on a physical level short of rape me, or kill me, however, if they hit some of my triggers, or endanger those i call family, then hell itself has nothing on the damage a few well placed words, and directions can have on their former existance.

Its a matter of being able to balance things....how well one does that, shows how well they have overcome overt violence....and I think that is what the point of this thread might be, dealing with the overt violence, not the spiritual warfare that all life contains, but I could be very wrong on that. Because as society percieves what little they know of the constant desires for more energy, knowledge, power what ever, and what burdens us to live with keeping these in check.

It comes down to what would be best for society. Us to play along and be as whiped dogs in the daylight hours, whilst we draw from the living world all the energy we desire when they sleep, being what they fear in their soul simply by our existance. Or to us being actually open that we have skills and abilities that would make normal people run away in horror, no matter how "open" they say their minds are.

I would honestly say that most of the true modern living vampires I've gotten to know are either pacifists, or have extremely low levels of aggression. Most goths that i know would also be in these two groups. Not many of the folks in either scene is really prone to getting so physically aggressive as to even be all that threatening if you get past the 'dark style'.

I think the violence that occasionally pops up in both the goth scene or the vampire scene is usually in response to abuse from outside the scene and is often from younger people who lose it after taking years of abuse from classmates, parents, or authority figures. They snap and attack everyone outside their social circle or the very authority figures that should have protected them.

I don't think that there is more violence in the vampiric lifestyle. I think that the media just protrays it more violence. Most of the Gothic people I have met are very passive and don't really care to fight unless provoked. I think the violence tendancies come from the people who have led or grown up in an abusive life. The anger and hate that they bottled up inside eventually has to go some where. So it goes out and people get hurt in the process.

Violence...
I will agree with some on here and then turn around and disagree with them.
While violence is deemed part of a way of life. It is not accepted among most cultures. Specifically, the American society. The American mindset, though may not seem, is predominately Christian. And with that, violence is bad but needed. Also being a Christian society, anything that could be related to Satan and such, is deemed bad, hence things like, Goths and Vampires are violent. Human society fears anything it does not understand or know.
I've been in more trouble than I like to think about because I believe violence is the answer to everything. Somebody pisses me off, I beat them.
My anger management director, has partially opened my eyes to this "fault" as he calls it. Violence, anger, hatered, is a natural emotion that is actually healthy in small degrees.
I would like to think that Vampires are above this wanton emotion. They they are not held down by the bounds of human feelings. That they are noble and discreet. With the occasional enforcer.
Anywho, I think I'm rambling now.

Well, I have a simple response to this. As I've responded to similar threads concerning violence, and beliefs.. All beliefs, religions, or whatever they may be called, that I've looked into, have some type of standard set for when it's appropriate to be violent. If you want to take in some great reading about war tactics, just read the Bible. I know that what was said about the Mormans is true. Joe Smith, the prophet himself, had told his followers. "We will fight, if necessary." However, this is with all man kind. It's embedded in us to be violent should the proper conditions call for it. If you're violent otherwise, it's not because of your beliefs, or the way you live, though it is used as an excuse all the time. It's because you're sick in the head. This is why all of us that live "normal" lives, and believe that way we want get branded so much in society.

I think its just another stereotype. Not all vamps are violent, much the same way that not all hippies are burnt out vegan druggies for example. Sure you will find people who are violent in the vamp community and you will find space cadets in the hippie community. My point is that there is always someone that will be the polar opposite and prove the "typical" cliche wrong.

if they think vampires have more violence among them than anything else; they need to look again. Wars and destruction are due to human nature, only a few things are caused by vampires and werewolves.

This is definitly part of the cliche

I think there is. Not EVERYONE is violent. But many members on this site spend a lot of time making fun of and discussing the stereo-typical VR profile. And there would be nothing to make fun of if this were just like MySpace, Facebook.. or other online communities. Here, there is moreso.

I think statistically there is quite a difference. Violence is in fact an attractive aspect of the dark. Not necessarily being violent or being a victim of violence... but the idea of it and figuring it all out. I am not violent... but for some reason I quite enjoy violent fims of horror. I am infatuated with serial killers although I am not one, and don't approve of it in any way. And guess what- here I 'be' on Vampire Rave :P

Violence has and will always be part, off the world. So honestly people need to stop acting surprised when something violent happens. Yeah they can be shocked like wow did that just happen, but there is no need to cry over it like spilled milk violence has been around a long time and it isn't planning on going anywhere anytime soon.

I think it's human to be attracted to or fascinated by violence to a certain extent. Not to the extent of being violent or enjoying being treated violently or even enjoying watching people BE violent... but movies, fiction, learning about the criminal mind- it's pretty normal.

Beyond that- there truly are people on this site, MANY- that seem to be violent types. At least judging by the way they present themselves.

StoriesITell, yes violence is everywhere, as you have said. However, there is violence on sites such as Facebook and Myspace. Its just, from what I have noticed, people are more open here. I have seen a couple profiles on here that blew my mind BUT you can find the same thing on the two sites mentioned above. You just have to look for it.
All in all I think people here are more open, and in that, will express themselves more.

True. Paper (or screen) will let you write anything.

But I do agree with Images.

Most of the Vampires (or those that believe they are) see themselfs as stronger, better then others, even above the law.

Read some of the profiles here and you will see that. They would test the limits.

People that act violent on profiles, forums or other web medium don't count toward a truly more violent culture. In fact, I would go so far as to say that many of the more 'violent' web posters are just acting out...probably due to feelings of inadequacy in the real world. Those who act super violent or tough online, are usually the last to act so in the real world.

I also tend to think that most truly violent people, don't have the social skills to even get much from the web and therefore don't really go online as much as others.

That being said, I stand by my earlier comments that there are typically far more 'real world' violent behavior in other 'scenes' or subcultures like skinheads or gangs.

I guess it all comes down to what you explain violent as.

When people cuss someone out- it's often followed by "What's with all the violence?" Abuse in this age also extends to emotional and mental beyond physical.

Although it is true that the statistics find most serial killers are your average white male- I would still say I see more violence here than any other online community. Rather that is people 'feel more comfy' in this atmosphere to be open with it- I don't know.

Violence in nature is almost always about survival. Violence in humans is almost unique for occurring with no other reasoning than hatred, greed, power and even pleasure. We are a part of nature as well but our level of violence is so unique and unreasonable, that it often seems to separate itself from any other aspect of nature.

I find the answers to my question to be fascinating. The majority that have responded thus far, seem to feel that the vampire community is no more violent than any other part of life, as it is all violent in our current times. Yet others have pointed out several strong reasons for saying that the answer is yes. It all seems to boil down to human nature, as do most things involving people.

I agree that the individuals here are probably more open about their violent tendencies but then there is also the wannabes who put all the threats and harsh words in their profiles and journals knowing that they will never need to back them up. I suspect that many believe making statements like this will make them “fit” in more here. Expecting to find this site filled with violent, angst ridden, angry people they make statements filled with nasty words and threats. Hopefully some of them spend enough time here to learn better.

I confess that I too, am drawn to darkness and enjoy a good violent movie, book and story. True crime drama to futuristic crime stories I find them fascinating, however this has never made me feel the need to act violent myself, nor to find it acceptable as an answer to a problem. While there have been great reasons given here pro and con, I have to admit I’m still undecided as to the truth.

Yes.

I am addicted to shows like Cold Case Faile, Foresnic Files, American Justice, and Investigative Reports. I have also been fiddling with the idea of a screenplay for a few years about a serial killer.

I would say that the confrontational attitudes from many here are not in fact representative that the person bearing them is more violent in nature, but more defensive due to likely previous experience....as I was referring to in a house forum, many people find me intimidating in the city I live in, while almost none of them have ever seen me in a real confrontation, where do they base this from then, simply how I present myself, I refuse to be anyones victim, I stand up for my rights and the rights of others, and if it became necessary, I would be willing to do this in the face of danger, I have, but not where the people who know me would have seen it.
but even though I am a reluctant fighter, there is a certain use I find in the image, fewer people try to pull shit with me, and there have been times that simply by showing up in an argument that is getting dangerously heated people have calmed down because they don't want to know what i might do if it gets worse...
but in retrospect, is vamp culture more violent....in response I ask,
how many drive by shootings are perpetrated in our culture, how many gang beatings, how many rapes, when has the Vamp culture beated a small gay boy to death?
violence is inherent with us...this I agree with...but no more than any other group

Like every other culture we have ones who are extremly violent and then there are ones that are extremly nice and wouldn't hurt a fly. The way I view this is as labeling it's like saying a priest for a church is perfet we all have our faults just some worse than others. I have to disagree with you Felix. Only on the nature part though.
If you ever watch why two lions fight, its not for survival. In fact lions will rarely fight over food. They fight for superiority, which is not needed for survival.
Superiority goes into humans as well. For instance, back in high school I used to be picked on and what not, that changed when I layed the most popular guy in school out. Nobody bothered me, I was superior.
Back to the lions, when one male lion beats the other (through violent means) he becomes the leader of the pride. One does not have to be the leader or superior to survive.

I feel there is violence pretty much anywhere. as for more or less it depends on the lifestlye a person or persons choose to live.

even in the BDSM lifestlye it depends on the ones invovled. It can be very dangerous and violent and it can just be a very satifying way of sex.

Yet here I have found alot of violence, and alot of great sweet people it is how people choose and you just have to be careful whom you choose to be with or associate with.

There is always going to be Violence of some sort.

SandmanForever- at first glance you would seem to be correct that surely, establishing a pecking order isn't necessary to survival. However, in the wild, such things matter greatly. Who leads the pack is based on who can provide the best protection and the clearest instinct to survive both individually and therefore as a group. Finding the alpha in nature is a form of natural selection as well insuring that the most strong and able male and female will mate and thus produce strong and able offspring. Nature may look as cruel as humans at times...but it's not nearly so.

In places like school or childhood, there are in fact as you said, similar movements to establish superiority or alpha roles and this may be left over from ancient survival instincts. The difference is that in mankind, brute strength is no longer the best way to insure survival or natural selection with regards to good progeny...far from it in fact. Intellect and creative thought or problem solving will often serve better in later years but those are the very things that are targeted as weak in youth.

Yes, it seems in the "goth" culture younger and younger people have began cutting and such, not all are from but most have resulted from the media broadcasting this as a mainsteam hobby.

just as carrying a gun is now a new fashion sense in some cultures.

there are extremests in every group

examples include:

Klu Klux Klan
peta
Al-Qaeda

but to say one group is more prone to vilence than another is not civil.

yeah; I agree. There's too much violence in the world, not on certain websites. You don't want violence, might as well kill yourself because no matter what you do you're stuck in it. That's how bad it's gotten, and I can't stand it. I don't understand why the world and people are so 'evil'. But what I don't understand more, is why they have to blame it on the "gothic/emo/vampire"-scene. Pretty much because [most] of 'us' wear black, and listen to "DEVILS MUSIC" [I don't even believe in the devil ] but I guess because of that we all are out to kill people....it just doesn't make sense?

You I have seen things about the vampire lifestyle on the travel network and the Discovery channel.

I think that the fact that some messed up people claim to be vampires and then do things like form cults or clicks that lead to violence. I also think my a serial killer could find it easier to get victims by saying he's a vampire to a willing donor.

Bad people use all kinds of deguises to lure people in. And for most people it's easier to blame the "odd balls" of society than the fact the person was messed up in the head and actually had nothing to do with any particular group.

Look at Ted Bundy, he dressed as a cop and got his viticims that way. Does that mean all cops are violent?

People use whatever scape gats they can so we as humans feel better about ourselves.

I agree with most of you that there is violence in all walks of like. I also think that with all the violence around the world it is something that should be looked into better than what it has. I will say this much without overstepping myself on the site and that is I think that Cryinmist said it well when she said,,,,

"Violence is everywhere and was always there, the only difference is that now it is more easly shown and available for the media that makes it seems more present. "

i think that people juast point out the violence in ower lifestyle as we are something different and people would like to keep us from becoming anything near norm i do also know that from finding a donor is often just like getting a date aslong as you let the person know what you are wanting from the start

but i guess there are some people that like the dark nasty side of fiction vamps that jump out on people and feed without there concent but i can safely say i know no one who would do this

It's only true because of the undesireables who are attracted to it, and not genuine about it.
