So ive been on here a few weeks, not long compared to many, ive looked at the House's and Coven's availible to join, but noticed that many of them require you to say Why You want to join them. Has that put anyone off joining them? I'll be honest and say yes, Makes me feel like a suck up -_-

I mean not to offend anyone, Just looking for some veiws on this.

You don't choose a clan or house, they choose you. At least, that's how it seems to me.

Personally I think it's generous of Houses and Covens to have an application process..regardless of what they're asking. I think most want to know why you would like to join because they want to see if you would be an active member of their society. If you're actually interested in what they stand for and how they run things, then you're more likely to participate actively.
With the number of Covens increasing.. the likelihood that you will wind up somewhere that interests you is slim unless you let the CM's or ACM's know you're interested and apply according to their rules. Otherwise you're likely to be force inducted somewhere you don't want to be.. which is perfectly within reason here.

It shouldn't put you off....Each House or Coven is unique in its own way...Therefore they would like to know what it is about the House or Coven that you're interested in?Maybe you're not suited for a particular House or Coven..So they want to avoid a possible fight if a member is unhappy in the newly inducted society....You have to take into account there are many here who create a lot of fuzz over Houses and covens...So naturally it is done in the best interest of the members as well as the Society heads...

if there is one in particular you want to join, and it's a good one, they will want to know if you are going to be any use to them, or just dead weight - or worse still, a trouble maker. so naturally they want to know why you are asking to join so they can get some idea of what they can expect from you. they ask the same thing at job interviews - why do you want to work for us? nobody truthfully says "coz i'm tired of being on the dole and want to afford to go to the pub every night".

but don't worry - if you aren't particular where you go, someone is bound to induct you before too long. if you do quite well, and it is a reasonable house or coven, they may trade you to another at your request - if you are polite about it, and the other coven / house is willing to trade.

Meh i don't i think it's good for you to become an appplicant of a House or Coven because some people don't get a real choice and get inducted in.
Whereas i got looking around as soon as i joined and when i found the Vampire Dove i just messaged saying why i'd like to join and such.
It's nicer that way i think or at least being asked to join and make a choice rather than forced you know? xx

When I was looking It didn't deter me from sending a message to who ever to get in..... But I got into the one I wanted..... The Coven of the Vampire Dove.... I loved it there....

The reason why that is thought is because covens and houses aren't just for socializing, it is a family. look at it as if you were up for adoption they want to make sure you are going to be in for the right reasons and give it your all.... there are rules and regs that one need to maintain or you can get kicked.... no matter what though people are going to want to know why you want to be a part of their group....

Well apart from saying something like...I like the look of your house/coven and what it stands for etc there isn't much else to say.

If your unsure take your time and don't press the update button till you've had a good look round.

I'd say that if you spend a lot of time on VR people will notice you. If you have the qualities that a coven is looking for they might take you. Or you might get grabbed by some random coven and learn to like it. If you don't to apply then don't.

Every Coven and House functions in their own way in VR.

Some societies run rampant through VR and induct anybody that they choose. You might get picked up because of your age, or your profile rating, or because somebody likes a certain picture on your profile, or just because they want more members.

You might get picked up by a society if you have caused trouble in VR and they want nothing more than to tuck you away and restrain some of those antics.

And then there are places who have applications and want to know more about you. I am part of one of these.

The Guardians of Darkness do not forcibly induct anybody. Each of our members comes to us of their own free will. We ask questions to get to know more about you because the GoD have a function and a purpose. We look after, protect, mentor, and guide the youth of VR.

As a result, we want to try an make sure we are not bringing anybody into our Coven that will turn our members into prey. We seek out those that desire protection and those who will stand to protect. And the only way we can learn that is to find out more about each member.

I do not look for a suck-up ... somebody who can tell me what I want to hear. I look for the truth, the ambition, and the desire to be a good member and support our creed.

And I'm sure that is why other societies also want to know.

DeadRoses,
I wouldn't call an application a "Suck up" it shows that the individual is interested in a certain society. And during the application process the society sees if ther person actaully fits into what their society is designed or built to do.

Many masters do not want "drama", even though that is impossible, an application does tend to weed out as much as possible by getting like members into their own society.

Now, forcible inductions are the way of the vampire. I enforce and encourage forcible inductions, but consider this, you were chosen for a reason.

There are thousands of members on the site, and only a few hundred that are allowed to be associated with a society. It's not a right, it is more like a privalege, (unless it's purgatory! LOL) and you should enjoy that you were chosen for whatever reason.

It shouldn't bother you that they ask why you would like to join. When you look everything over and choose one to apply to, there was a reason you chose it. Like, maybe the members shared similar interests as you. Or maybe you know a member. But, I think it's only far to allow a Coven or a House the chance to get to know you before they make a decision on bringing you into their family. Because we are like families.

As it happens, every member of my Coven who is not blind, was asked whether they would like to join.

I have rejected every request since, not that I don't want to invite more, but because there is a very specific attitude which I'm looking for and none of those asking me to join, have yet presented it.

It varies a lot between different societies but, at the end of the day, you don't chose the society - the society chooses you. You don't get put off a society - the society gets put off you etc

If they chose you by seeing the quality of your forum posts, because you applied, because you have made friends in that society or whatever - that is how it is.

If you find any part of a society's system off-putting then it probably isn't the society for you but, you have little choice where you go

I did summarise a great deal of this in my Newbies Guide to Houses & Covens

To answer the above post: One has to read about all the Houses and Covens and find what he/she is interested in.Once hat is done go to the particular House or Coven and fill up their application form.....Do it a day before you advanced to Catiff...If you're lucky you'll get through...

Yes you can message someone in the house/or coven with why you want to be in their society. The whole purpose is to get you familiar with the principles before you're inducted.

In most cases though, forced inductions occur where you do not really have a say in the matter. As one member said, do the research before you hit level five and if you are drawn to one, take the first step. As soon as you update to a level 5 you are fair game for any coven or House.

I am doing just that at the moment..checking out the houses and covens. I totally understand forced inductions and accept that concept (wouldn't be here if I didn't!) I do want to be an active participant in my coven/house and would hope to find a good match soon.

it lets them know why you are interested in them...and helps them understand how you feel about the coven/house.......to be honest chosing and appying right now for you would be a good thing...so right when you get to the level they want you to be at you get in if they decided to take you in.....each coven/house is different....but they do it just to know more about you and how you are

I honestly do not know why covens do that, unless they really want to know but i personally do not see any reason for it i think that it is just something covens or houses do to understand why you would want to be part of their group, but i have known people who were inducted into covens without filling out thoes type's of forms...

Read the rules and Guidelines of each house and coven and make up your own mind which one suites you best . you can put in applications to those socities and they can decide if they want you or not . Also once your a level 5 and higher you could be forced inducted .

I am very interested in the enforced system of covens and look on being recruited as an exciting stage of being an active member here. I also think that it is a good idea to read about the covens and find out what makes them tick and which ones are in line with your own belief and value systems.

I think I would prefer a Coven that had some kind of vetting process whether it be a formal application or just a review of a person's profile, forum post, journals, etc. I would like to think that my beliefs and style were in accord with the other members.

Frankly, I have never been forced to join any house or coven. I have always received offers and I appreciate that. however, If I was forced in I might be upset, but that would depend on where exactly I ended up. I do see why some are force inducting so much, but I have to wonder if this leads to a few who really feel out of place in their society.

In regards to the original post... Yes, you are expected, after a manner, to suck up. That is how politics works, and vampires are a VERY political society. That is why we call our gatherings "courts." ;) Just like royalty with nothing better to do. *heh*

Keep in mind you can also get conscripted into a coven or house against your will, so maybe suckign up to the "lesser evil" is better in some cases. *chuckle*

When I first opened my coven I debated whether I would have an application or not. Eventually I decided not to. It seems more impersonal than if someone sends a message to me wanting to join & I talk with them & then decide. I looked around a little at some of the applications out there. My first reaction was wow. Some are long & seem to want info that has nothing to do with why you want into the coven. Nothing against them. All the covens are so diverse. We each have our own way. For some applications work best, for others it doesn’t. If you feel put off by an application when you see it, then that’s probably not the coven for you. Nothing about the coven you are thinking of joining should put you off. I have never force inducted anyone & was lucky enough to not have that happen to me. However force induction is being used more frequent now, so I would suggest that anyone wanting into a certain coven to fill out the application or contact someone within before you reach level 5, otherwise you may end up somewhere you really don’t want to be.

I have read every House and every Covens main pages(some a few times) and I have seen that each society has a different reason for existing on the site. Having an application for some covens helps in them choosing people that are fitting for the coven. In other covens, it isn't needed due to the nature of the coven. I know in my coven all I did was message the coven master and told him why I wanted to join. There are a few other societies that force induct. Those also have an option for those that want to join willingly.

I think that each coven has things set up in the best interest for that particular coven. Some need the applications and others don't. Depends on where you are looking.

Yes there are more covens, but there is no limit, that I've found, to how many covens there can be. That is why there are more covens than houses.

i have had several different experiences with Covens and Houses here on VR ... one asked if i wanted to join .. and i turned them down for personal reasons . and those reasons were respected ...i think that spoke VOLUMNS about said Coven ...

I was forcibly inducted into House .. and once the SHOCK of it all wore off (about 27 minutes lol) ... it turned out to be a great experience ...

Now I belong to a Coven .. that i chose to leave the House for .. and am very happy there ...

We participate in forced inductions .. but we also ask .. and we have also taken folks who asked US ...

I cant see viewing the "why do you want to join" question as something that should put one off .. look at it this way .. of YOU were a House or Coven Master .. would YOU want a member who's answer to that question was "oh ... i just think yer crest is cool" ... or "i just dont wanna be in this other Coven thats talking to me so i figured your's would be a safe place to hide" ...

Consider it an HONOR that the House or Coven VALUES your opinion ..

I was lucky enough to be asked to join 'Festival' by a ACM as well as a another coven when i was at level 3 but i wasn't too sure about covens at the time as i hadn't really looked them up so when i hit level 4, i didn't update until i was sure which coven i wanted to go into (all i did then was message rogue599 ACM of Festival) and then he inducted me when i updated.

As for saying why you want to go to a certain coven, i imagine it's to ascertain whether you are suitable for that particular coven or not, after all they are not all the same.

As people have suggested already DO NOT update until you r sure where u want to go, and even then unless a CM or a ACM from that coven is online at the same time as you update, another coven could 'grab' you anyway.

not all house or coven force members to join their group. there are some who let members apply for the said coven or house and they require a reason for wanting to join... this maintains the exclusivity of the group and not coerce people who doesn't really want to join

A good question here... Personally I have been on the Rave quite sometime now and Its True the House/Coven chooses You.. Yes come have an application process but in thelong run if they dont want You .. Your screwed from the get go.. I offered Myself and the Favors i earned to a Coven I Desired to be in Greatly I considered it a Very Honorable and Outstanding Coven and Well To me it looks like They choose to Not have me and So i was then Writen by the Coven Master of the One im in Now and asked if I wished to be a Member there and Told Her YES... Since then I have made their Coven A Great Amount of Favors and increased My level Several times and is Greatly helping Boost up Her Coven.. It has Prooved to be a Good choice and has made several good friends here.. I find it a Shame those i had considered Friends would have not taken me but guess we dont know everything now do we.. Sometimes its good to have our wishes go unanswered or negatively ..

I was very lucky to be asked if i wanted to join 'festival' when i was at level 3 but a ACM of the coven plus i was invited to join another coven when i was at level 4 so i did have a choice anlike a lot of people, but wasn't sure as i'd barely looked at the different covens (was too busy sorting out my profile and making friends:) So i took some advice from some friends and never updated until i was sure which coven i wanted to go into, at which point i contacted the ACM at 'Festival' at asked if i can join, at i've been very happy since:))

I would strongly suggest you DO NOT update until you've decided which coven looks good for you and then ask if they would take you and then update when the CM or ACM is online to 'grab' you if you hit a level 5 as you are 'fair game' for everybody then, which brings me to your original question.

I imagine the application forms ask why you want to join just to make sure you will be a good match for them and not be 'dead weight' and be a good advocate for your coven. I hope this advice helps, personally i can recommend 'festival of decay' and they don't force induct:))

I asked to be inducted to my Coven.I felt I could further my Spiritual beliefs with the one I joined. All Covens and Houses don't forceble induct members, and don't feel like a suck up,it is asked to see if you really want to be a part of the Coven/House.I'm very happy with my decision to join Coven Of The Guardian Wolf,it's like another family.

it shouldnt piss you or anyone off being in a house or coven is not something you can avoid not until at least you get to the level of sire then you have the opition of not being in one what so ever. anyone that gets to be chosen in there should be lucky that they are in one as it just like joinin a family or vampire clan that is I see it.
thx,

I don't really agree with the covens that require a member to state why they want to join the coven in question.

My reasoning is simple... how the heck are they supposed to know whether or not they would truly fit in or even want to join that said coven without knowing what is on the forums and without a chance to try it out first.

That's why I like the concept of a grace or trail period where the member is allowed to explore the society and is allowed to leave if they do not feel uncomfortable there.

yeah considering they are private you cant really tell if you will fit in tell you are inducted....so applications seems rather pointless...
however i do think most people should be asked if they would like to join...personally, its not required but it is kinda a courtesy.

Dire What a Great Idea then it would so much fairer and not have so much hard feelings and i think so many more people would be alot happier and less negative.. Heck i was almost at a point where i was threatened that i would be sent to one place where i would be totally screwed over and i said well if that happened i would basically delete my account and begin again noone would have my favors fortuneately i got into a Outsanding Coven and it didnt come to that.. its very good to have Great Friends on my SIde

Some of the houses and covens have a program or concept like that already in action. It also lets the society see if that person is good for the rest of their community or not or whether they will start problem, etc.

I have been forced into covens and also have been asked to join them. You should feel honored that the House Or Coven Master allows you to be there or were even considered.Forced inductions are part of the VR society system........If you don't like the way it is run then maybe you shouldn't be on the Rave.

The application/interview process lets them see what you are bringing to them. It allows you to show that you can articulate your thoughts and lets you tell them what you are willing to do for the organization. You should have value to them, not they to you.

The application process is a fairly good idea. I see what you are getting at, you dont want to seem as if you are BS-ing your way into their Coven. But that is why you can look around the covens and see what is going on and even talk to some of the masters and members....

I'll be hoping to grow by selection rather than application. I wont have a formal process but building up a dialog with an applicant seems the best way to me really. Get to know them first, although that may be more of a problem at busy times lol

I don't think it's bad that they ask. They probably just want to make sure that you actually want to be there and will do things to help. Rather than sit there and not be active. I was inducted without asking, but I love my coven. I am glad they wanted me.

Some of the Covens and Houses are nice enough to allow you the choice of applying to be there instead of force inducting you. They ask why you want to join because they want to know if you will fit in there. However, the choice is still there for the covens and houses to force induct you.

There is the "bums on seats" aspect of induction - just getting the numbers up to gain favour, or take advantage of a good profile. If you're into standings that can be worth more to the coven than participation and being a "good fit"

I believe that most house and covens as this so that they can see if you are going to fit in with the other members of there coven/house and the coven/house its self. They also do this to make sure that the people they take in to there coven are going to be online and be active within the coven and out of it.

I was inducted into my first coven without any prior knowledge. A real life friend got me into that one.

My second coven ( the one I am currently in) I sorta talked to the coven mistress and so did a friend of mine.

I think the houses and covens use that to gauge whether a member is right for their group. If that puts someone off, then there is a good chance that was not the society for them in the first place.

They just want to know if they think you would be right for the coven see if they think youll be an active member and such. They all have different values and stuff they r into and you may not be into what they r which in case the reason for them wanting to know why you would like to be part of their family. This way they dont lose anyone.

The Coven Master is just wanting to make sure that you will be interesed enough to help out the coven and to do your part. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Our Coven Master told each member that if you were not happy with the Coven and wanted to leave that would be your decision. I was inducted into my Coven and I enjoy the Coven that choose me very much.

In my coven (I believe the Lord of it has already spoken) the Guradians of Darkness, you apply for your seat. But when you apply it's nothing like a suck up. I applied and I'm so glad I did. There is no scking up in any of it.

If you want to get in a coven that inducts (which are the majority) just try to stand out and get noticed, but if you want to be a part of a coven of your own will, just ask! 9.99 times out of 10 you'll get accepted, and for those that don't it doesn't stop there! Just get out there, you wont be doing any sucking up of lowering yourself. Join a coven whose morals you value, and people you want to spend time with.

If you want to understand the coven you must be in it!
You have nothing to be afraid:
the coven is a great thing and the Masters are open-minded people and in 90% they will let you go to another coven if you have a strong conviction that you don`t belong to the coven you were inducted.
I was inducted 4 times and finally I asked to be inducted in my actual Coven.
I just love my coven and it`s a GREAT experience!
Just jump into it!Don`t think to much!
People are great here!
You have nothing to fear!

I always felt that things happen for a reason. Even if you end up in a bad coven or a house, you learn something from it. So I'm not going to petition anyone. I'm just going to let the wind blow me where it will. Which if you think about it, covens and houses symbolize real vampire covens and houses. You don't get to chose who bites you and then you automatically become a member of the house of the one that bit you. So I'll let myself get forcibly inducted.
