I think the thoughts of immortality are based on religion and mythology. ie the gods and godesses that lived life unending according to their followers beliefs and needs. I don't believe in immortality. My apologies to those that do. Immortality is based on those who loved you and keep your memory alive through the generations that follow, to me this is true immortality.

odds are someone just lived a long life span and then they starting saying they were immortal, or others did until everyone started believing it.

In addition,it could have been the result of some kind of time travel that we have yet to perfect as of yet.Space travel too has an affect on how the body ages...or does not age rather.Never know, but its fun to think about.

if i remember correctly the reason we age is because of small defects each time our cells reproduce, so if the cells reproduced more effently than we would age alot slower but now matter how well your body gets there would still be error and you would age just alot slower.

I think that immortality is all myth. People have always wanted to be immortal so that we don’t have to die. I would imagine that someone has been telling stories about immortality since people started telling stories.

the elixer is a good idea, after all i've heard so much about the elixer of life and others that would do the same, i think people just kinda took an elixer that extends life to somthing that make a person immortal.

Immortality in the flesh is just a fantasy in my opinion. Personally, I would never want to live forever. I do agree with some who have stated that the idea probably comes from philosophies about higher beings such as gods. However, I dont consider it to be obtainable to a human. Just my thoughts.

Immortality as far as I know begun life as a religious belief. In gods and goddesses that never died, etc.

However I believe the soul is immortal that it never dies, just moves from one existence to the next.

Ones Soul and Memory can live on forever but the flesh is that of tales and Myth...
Immortality has been romanticised by Hollywood, It is one thing I believe we as mortals would not be satisfied with...We think of how wonderful it would be to live forever, but we don't realise the consequences that would come with such a life...boredom, the pain of losing the ones we love and the slow demise of the world around us would be a pain so unbearable...
Immortality of the flesh is but a myth...

To my knowledge there is no proof of any such immortal person but Cryonics may in a different sort of way in the future change things...

Cryonics is the practice of preserving organisms (either intact specimens or only their brains) for possible future revival by storing them at cryogenic temperatures where metabolism and decay are almost completely stopped. Ideally this would allow clinically dead people to be brought back in the future after cures to the patients' diseases have been discovered and aging is reversible. Modern cryonics procedures use a process called vitrification which creates a glass like state rather than freezing as the body is brought to low temperatures. This process reduces the risk of ice crystals damaging the brain structure. Many people who wish to become physically immortal think of cryonics as a backup plan in case the emerging life extension technologies don't develop rapidly enough.

The future holds many possibilities.

There has always been some creature or being called Immortal. The Greeks and the Romans had their immortal all powerful Gods. God in the Christian sense is immortal, unless you take to heart the philosopher who said God is dead.

Many good replies on this specially containg the soul as immortal, and i would agree partily with this for we do not know that the soul remains full of energy at the passing of our life. yet if you believe in after life, like me you would have to agree with it being immortal. Good question to ponder.

"The fourth layer is generally referred to as the soul or spirit and could actually be many layers operating within the same narrow range- this is the eternal self, the (virtually) indestructible form in which we exist consciously between physical lives and expands anywhere from a few feet to miles in the most powerful forms." Stabb666 member article Energy Work II: Manipulation

Even considering Stabb's description of a Soul as part of one's aura, it would seem as though once the shell of a human body is shed - that spirit or soul would also be shed and disperse. I'm sure that wasn't the intent of his article, but if the aura is attatched to the individual as such - without that individual there would be no purpose for that energy.

I'm not trying to disprove his article. In fact he's the only one that I've found so far that can give a satisfactory answer as to what a soul actually is.

I think part of it may have stemmed from the Bible. These characters were living to be really old, as the stories tell. Then, as others mentioned, myth, which I also collaborate with suspicion, as there are the believers and the non-believers. Immortality is what many seek. This is a pretty good topic for discussion!

there are lots of beliefs, and every belief is valid for the believer... so, i'll give my opinion from where immortality came...

the bible:
Ecclesiastes 3:11 "He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end."

he doesn't need to... i was being ironic, to ones is a myth and to others is reality... but saying that there are immortality myths in the bible is not wise... the bible isn't just some book, if it is possible to prove the existence of God and eternity, is through the bible, nothing else... it's not just a book written by mans... it is a book written by mans inspired by the Holy Ghost, a real person like you and me...

It may be interpreted that way. According to Genesis, God warned them not to eat the fruit from the tree or they would die. The serpent tricked Eve into taking food from that tree, and when God found both Adam and Eve hiding he punished them with the fate of death - for from dust was he made, to dust will he return.

Immortality, sounds like everyone has their oun interpetation of it.
I believe that you are immortal if your memorie lives on in others, whether it be in stories, pictures, or the hearts of loved ones.
Some times when we remember people our imaginations can get carried away at times.....and the next thing you know....some one seen that person just the other day...even though they have been deceased for many years...hence, another way people become immortal....
I hope that makes sense

Most humans fear death, hence thoughts turn toward not dying. Ancient humans looked around at the constant renewal of nature, and figured, "Why not us?"

I would like to at least try immortality. I don't fear death, but there is so much that I want to do, so many books to read, people to meet, walks to take --- I could be deeply satisfied with a lot more time.

yes, there would be sadness associated with it --- specifically the aging and passing of loved ones --- but imagine the depth of love that could be achieved with endless time, knowing that each moment with them was an encapsulated period to treasure.

This philosophy is at the heart of every vampire romance. That, and unrequited love.

Well alot of people are saying that Immortality is a myth yet if one actually thinks about it Immortality does exist.

immortality is something that does not Die it lives on for eternity. We actually have made people and even history Immortal due to our Memories and writings of such. Therefore making things and people IMMORTAL~ So technically immortality Does exist.

Moses if my history is rememberd correctly lived to be many 100's of years old. He made bibical history for all to read and again the writings have made him immortal.
I also feel that even when the body has died and decayed away that the soul will live on and ensuing immortality even if it is just in the spiritual sense or memorial sense. Just how I believe.....

Among innumerable other instances, I well remember something in a volume of Joseph Glanvill, which (perhaps merely from its quaintness --who shall say?) never failed to inspire me with the sentiment; --"And the will therein lieth, which dieth not. Who knoweth the mysteries of the will, with its vigor? For God is but a great will pervading all things by nature of its intentness. Man doth not yield him to the angels, nor unto death utterly, save only through the weakness of his feeble will."

(E. A. Poe - Ligeia)

I think the Shangri-La story must be verified.Who knows what that might bring to the science of biology?

To be immortal, is to be constant in a sea of change. Never growing older, never changing, never changing. To be immortal is to lose that which humanity is, growth, change, life, death, purpose. All the things that make humanity worth living, you take that away and you have the vampire.

To be vampiric is to be powerful, outside the norm, and able to work and exist and live within the unseen worlds from "normal social perceptions". To be immortal would be that they never changed their manners, they never changed their body, the death removed. So to removed any chance for change that comes with even the small deaths, of social strata, persona, and mind. Let alone the spirit.

The big thing with Christianity is that the immortal soul goes to a blissful heaven. That even if it is blissful, must be stagnet, the trials and endurance of the wheels cease here, and all growth stops. So to be Immortal under that, isn't what I consider to be a good thing. I will endure my trials, and I will grow old and die. But what I can leave behind in my work, If my contrabutions are as I work and hope for them to be, will last long after im dead. Even if my actions are only in conversation with one soul, or dealing with one persons whose views on life change for their better and stay that way. I will have achieved immortality in that moment.

If you want physical immortality, then seek to be as the water, it is no mater what, seek to be as the fire, it is unchanging, where there is a spark to bring it to manifest it shall. Seek to be as the air, for it is every where. Seek to be of the earth, as all things on the earth are changing, and the only thing immortal about that is regardless they will exist that energy will exist no matter how many times you break it apart and remake it, or forge it anew. The essence remains of what it was.

So if you can point me in the direction of immortality, i would probably walk the opposite direction from a growthless, powerless state, never having the oppertunity to be better then I am now....No thanks.

I wont give some pretentious answer. I have not been on this earth long enough to have the nerve to venture a guess -- but I believe that it is the energy of spirit that remains immortal and not the shell used to house it.

To continue on slightly with Infernals post, the oldest known biblical individual was moses whom lived on through his 200's, not sure of the exact age of his death, but he apparently died of extreme old age, just as with Joseph of Aramathia.

The oldest known living real individual present day that is known was Jeanne Calment of France circe 1875 - 1997, she was a supercentenarian, which means she lived on for a century and more, she died at the age of 122.

the idea of imortality has been around since the first crusades when saladin thought he couldnt die.. since no one could kill him. it is based upon beliefs also. yet people make such a big deal out of it. some people have done it before, but imortality cant save you from everything ;) some of the worlds greatest apocatheries and alchemist have done it. though we dont notice it even when your immortal your body does change, not physically(like aging) though, your body will sort of transform over time and will look like a different person

I would agree with what most have said.. I believe the soul is immortal.. continuing on its journey.. thus reincarnation. I do not believe the shell we currently reside in was meant to continue on as we need to learn of new things. Otherwise how do we grow more as souls.

To add to Souls post,

Any reference I have found to Moses, was that he is always refered to as "The one of life prolonged" and when it was come for him to go, he was taken with his whole body up to heaven. So according to all accounts I could ever find, he technically never died, but was taken into heaven with his body, just as the Christ did. Ascended directly upwards into heaven with no remains. Again, so far as I have found, though my focus is usually the names of power moses made use of, not the study of his life.

There are hints and clues for the studious to find, about what is out there.

Its all speculation as anything is when one hasn't experienced it. But when the experience comes, not many return to tell that tale, and if they do, they are considered mad, or their visions are so skiewed by their perceptions of trying to describe something the human languages have no capacity to describe things tend to get flavored with their relgious viewpoints

I don't believe in immortality as in flesh and blood body living forever. But as for souls, immortality I do believe in. For I believe once my flesh, bones & blood shell of a body dies and returns to the Earth, my true self shall rise and ascend to the Astral Plains and begin a new existence.

What is hidden, is because its hiding in plane sight.

If you have the mentality to try and string thousands of years of perspectives together into a coherent idealogical structure and cosmology you can pretty much figure the lay out of things. But you have to remove every trapping of religion and base your study on the events that religion doesnt taint. It is these same events which you will find in every culture, regardless of the path.

Originally Taoist views held that reincarnation was earned, not automatic. I hold to this view point.

There is alot of preconception based on the theory of Christianity, Judaism and basic Buddhist ideas about topics of souls within this thread.

Souls are not immortal. They deteriorate, they decay, and they yes they do die. It is possible to use magick to kill souls, granted for many of you, this level of the art is beyond your capacities. Stuck is this notion that you are handed a resurrection through reincarnation. NOT SO

What in this life is ever handed to you just because? Reincarnation is a form of resurrection, and is no different from you having to do things on your own, on the grounds that you must understand if you seek to achieve it. The founding principle of vampirism as It drew my interests were that it was thought the vampiric soul is immortal, and it must be reestablished as such by working with the death currents to be able to make certain that a resurrection through reincarnation would occur.

If you do not think, do not want to know, or are just happy eating the tired old notions which do nothing but kill the spirit then go ahead, walk those paths and join the once born. That however is not my style.

There is a definite difference in the two words Infernal:

Resurrection is the dead coming back to life. The body itself that died and the original soul that inhabited it must rise from the state of death - whole and intact.

Reincarnation is the process of the soul being released from one body and being placed in another.

It's not a matter of semantics. These are the definitions - two distinct events.

Wolfsbane.

Its not semantics. Reincarnation is not a given. You do not get it handed to you simply because you were a good boy and girl.

If the soul continues its journey in a physical form after the death of its former vessel, that soul is resurrected into a new body, Thus REINCARNATING IT.

My above statement is not talking about resurrection of anything else, but through the method of soul incarnation through reincarnating it into a new vessel after the death of the one that is currently alive.

Infernal - in your explanation and in order for a soul to be resurrected it must first die (seperate from life) and then be reconfigured as a whole to be placed in another vessel. But by definition that act is reincarnation - not resurrection. Resurrection requires the same vessel for the same soul.

I never suggested in my former post that the two are simply handed out as candy on Halloween. If that is your faith - it is said in those religions which teach it that you must work for either one of these great honors. I'm not disputing that.
