I was just reading this little section of the Rave a little more closely and came about this part of one of the definitions of a vampire:
1. A blood-sucking ghost
My question is -- Are vampires really ghosts? If so, are they some form of solid ghost? I thought vampires were still in tact with this world. I thought they were the living dead..but not as in ghosts.
What's everyone's opinion on this?
i believe that vampires that feed off others are as real as you or me. they are not ghosts at all.
I would say no they can't be . I have never heard of anyone being bitten by a ghost .
Nope, I doubt that they could be... how can a ghost bite someone?
Maybe it's not meant to mean a literal ghost..I just thought it was something interesting to talk about. I guess we would need Cancer or whoever made that part of the Rave up to explain to us with they meant by "blood-sucking ghost".
*what they meant by "blood-sucking ghost"* A little typo there...
I also wanna ask, does everyone think that ghosts can't physically touch you? If ghosts can be proven to actually be able to physically touch a person, the blood-sucking ghost theory can make a little more sense.
1. A blood-sucking ghost; a soul of a dead person superstitiously believed to come from the grave and wander about by night sucking the blood of persons asleep, thus causing their death. This superstition is now prevalent in parts of Eastern Europe, and was especially current in Hungary about the year 1730.
It is a section from Definition for Vampire according to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, 1913 Edition
Vampire (Page: 1593)
Vam"pire (?), n. [F. vampire (cf. It. vampiro, G. & D. vampir), fr. Servian vampir.] [Written also vampyre.]
Cancer didn't make it up...he just copyed it from that Edition of the Dictionary.
Thank you, but either way, my question remains. Whether that definition is from Cancer or a dictionary, I feel that it's still a debatable topic.
According to the Anne Rice novels, the spirit that entered Akasha's body and began the race of vampires was apparantly able to penetrate flesh and withdraw blood from the human body before it could take physical form. However, this force was described as a spirit, not a ghost- the difference being a ghost is generally the shaddow of someone who has passed, while a spirit is somewhat eternal, no?
Ghosts are said to be able to go through or absorb things. Vampires can not do that.
Therefore, they are not ghosts.
If you think about a "True" Vampire...as history states and not a book or movie.A Vampire is a demon inhabiting the body of the dead....so in a way...it could be a "ghost" but not the traditional type.
I think ghost and spirit goes hand in hand. The only difference in them, I believe, is that a spirit is generally a living entity while a ghost is something from the dead.
TheDarkWolf -
I see what you're saying, but take a look at "A blood-sucking ghost". I don't think that the demon you are talking about that inhabits the bodies of the dead are also known to suck blood...
I do not believe that Vampires are Ghost at all I feel that Ghost are spirits of the dead not the living dead or the living which Vampires of today are as alive as you or me.
Just sharing the other entry from the dictionary.I don't believe in ghosts, spirits or any of that.
no they are not ghosts, not in my opinion anyway. they are people just like anyone else. they just happen to enjoy the taste of blood.
I have to agree that it is a topic for debate . Where do they get the dictonary definitions anyway
I guess just for discussion sake, vampires are supposed to be without soul, and ghosts are supposed to be lost souls. Vampires then probably aren't ghosts.
Vampires being ghosts goes against everything I have ever heard of a vampire and a goast being , however , that defination could have been written when the things defining the two were different .
I agree where do they get their definitions anyway LOL A vampire is not anyway a ghost.
maybe what we need is a clear detail definition of what a ghost is?
Legends and myths state that vampires are ghosts....like the verdilak (excuse spelling) and others. But just myth and legend.
Ghosts are spirits (for lack of a better word) of dead people - none of the vampires posting in this thread are dead as far as I know.

My personal opinion:
Those are updated abridged definitions, going by those I would say that a vampire is not a ghost. A ghost could possibly be vampiric and therefore could possibly be considered a type vampire. These definitions I would say cover mythological or fictional vampires. A living or nonfictional vampire is either human or a bat.
No. I don't personally believe that vampires are ghosts. Physical beings.
i believe that they are ghosts,or spirits from a dead vampire, thats my opinion though
I don't believe they are ghosts. If anything, I would consider them closer to reanimated corpses.
No, I don't believe vampires are ghosts. When I think of ghost I think of what you see on ghost hunters or in poltergeist. You know the things you can almost see through or you only glimpse the shape of. Where vampires are whole. Living dead, yes, but not ghosts. That's my opinion anyway.
if they are not real, then why do they only come out at night then?
Uh....because they'll burn up in the sun. :P
Just because they're only out at night doesn't make them a ghost. Ghosts aren't just nocturnal, they can come out during the day too.
the ones i seen were only out at night,i dunno if they come out durring the day....im gonna get off here for the night,if you need me to explane it to you more, just message me and ill be happy to explane it to you, what i believe about it,and what i seen
If you go strictly by the definitions that I found a vampire is a reanimated corpse and a ghost is a disembodied soul so the simple answer is no. Not everything in life is simple though including this topic. First off the definitions that I found are from an abridged source so may not be complete like the one referenced in the what is a vampire link to the left. That definition is also from an out dated source circa 1913. In common use on this site by it's members vampire has come to mean a lot more than the standard dictionary definition. In my opinion a vampire could be a ghost, but most are not. A ghost could be a vampire, but again most are not. A lot of it depends on how strictly you want to adhere to the dictionary definition.
well i believe that i dont know everything, therefore anything is possible, and if there can be an "Holy Ghost" then why can't there also be "Unholy Ghosts"...whatever they might be, blood sucking vampires, energy vamp's or shape shifters. i say "Why Not?"
Well I am sure there is something and wich can be classified as a vampiric ghost, but I wouldnt count in to that group the real vampires, since they are in my belief of material nature, and not ghosts.
The analogy I think the thread is looking for is this...
Vampire as a ghost in the essence that one creeps in the night, unseen by most, silent but deadly. Lurking in the shadows stalking its prey, in the dark it hides.
Ghostly reflections it gives to chill the bone. Ghostly presents is its way as it is percieved by most. Always pale in origin giving off a ghostly mystique.
I think you get my point.
Soulshroude -
I'm not looking for an analogy, as this definition is obviously meant to be something closer to a literal sense then a "hint" on something.
I see many points of view, but it seems none of us can make up our mind on this one. I am of the opinion that Vampires are not ghost, the living dead is a term I have heard used to describe them, if so then not ghosts.
I don't think they can be ghosts either..but I don't know. Who knows though..they very well might be. I've never seen a vampire so I don't know..
I do not think vampires are ghosts. They are being as you and I.. But are they real is the question... Who knows for sure the real answer...
Hmm,well not too probable in my book. The main reason beind that Ghosts arent of this dimension, they do not have fleash so how could their essence even contain what they would drink...not to mention a whole slew of other reasons.
Thumbs down on this one..
I don't believe that vampires can be ghost, ghost are souls who have yet to pass onto another world. An entire different entity altogether. A vampire soul chooses to stay or is damned to stay in this world. Although the immortal vampire may not be real, the soul of the vampire (I believe) is, and moves on to others souls throughout time. One who carries a vampire soul can crave the taste of blood, or be a psi vampire and drain the energy of those around them.
The difference being: Ghost are simply lost souls wandering this earth trying to find their way home. Vampires,, are souls, hundreds of years old (most likely) who need to be inside a living being. I do believe in vampires, but they are not like the ones on television.
Wait,I thought Vampires no longer had souls,am I wrong about that?
I believe they do,, I believe that it is their soul that is immortal, not the body they live in..
Good topic. Very debatable. I don't have anything to add.
I find it interesting how split VR is on believing in ghosts and vampires.
I consider myself to be as close to a vamp. that I can an I,m not a ghost.
I dont know they are called the living dead. The living cant be ghosts and the can are so i guess the answer would be no
Read Peircing the Darkness, the occult truth.....it makes for some very interesting reading.
A new bool to read. Thanks.
Vampires are not ghosts...per the legend.
i agree that there is now way that a vampire is a ghost.....but some people defence was that a ghost cant bite and in no way am i even close to a expert on this but what about a phsy vampire?????
I don't think of them as ghosts. That is a new look on it though, I'll have to think more on it.
well lets see when ghosts are concerned
I know of the 2 most dominant forms.
poltergeist-originally a person who was a terrible being usually enjoyed the sufferings of others so much that even after death they enjoyed to torment.
QuickSilvers- people who died in some extreme way usually at the moment of death they were doing some form of help to another, for example a guy seeing a kid run after a ball in the street car coming. The guy runs pushes the kid out of the way but then dies. Resulting in his transformation to a quicksilver,The quicksilver usually stays at the place of his or her death and protects that area from harm best it can.
since majority of ghost pertains to the specters not being able to truly touch this plains of existence only minor things like crack a mirror or have things fall random noises usually a ghost really can not touch a person.
So I highly doubt a vampire is a ghost.
i dont really think that vampires are ghosts... they are real, modern vampires i mean, are real, we are humans, not immortals, but not ghosts, definitely not... now, i know that there are some other parallel existences where we can find other creatures... but when a ghost appears in our plane, according to what i´ve seen, they are not vampires...
You bring up my next thought.
And this isnt to change the topic vampirika just to let ya know just a thought on this one.
Could what we call ghosts just be a rift in the fabric of our dimension from time to time where they are not actually focusing on us but their own dimension?
Could ghosts actually be normal people just from some other reality ?
I really don't see that as a possibility. They would have to be a solid form.
Hence the slight rip in the fabric of space. If it was ripped thin enough then certain things might be able to be affected.
No. They are not. They are another dominant form of life. Like us but different.
No I do not think that vampires are any form of ghost. In many tales vampires are soulless. And it's the soul that becomes a ghost after physical death right?
Vampires are as real as we are , I do not see them as being ghosts but I do believe they are a dead body that comes out and feeds when hungry mostly during the full moon
What area of information have you gotten full moons and vampires from?
Ive heard of were wolves and full moons but not vampires
The vampires of folklore were usually described as one of two appearances- vampires that seemed to be physically there, and apparitions, or phantoms. Physically solid vampires were
actually reported less often than their phantom brethren...
The phantom-like vampire will feed on people when they are in bed at night. The vampire is often recognized as a deceased
neighbor, friend, or family member by the victim, after the vampire removes itself. It's physical appearance, other than
familiar resemblance to the victim, varies from account to account. Often, it is described as a dark form, with its features apparent only seconds before the attack. Other accounts state that, though transparent, was instantly recognized by the victim from the moment they saw it.
Though the descriptions are stretched far and wide around the world, the more recent spectral vampire attack descriptions
indicate that the victims very rarely recognize their assailants. Most of the time, these types of vampires are described as
a dark mass, occasionally described with glowing eyes.
"The fact that fewer eyewitnesses of the above type of creature in the past hundred years indicates that there is a severe shift in popular beliefs...Fewer people today believe that the dead can rise to harm the living. In the past, however, the belief was strong and could possibly be the reason that a supernatural assailant would quickly assume the features of the deceased."
(my sum up of the information in Konstantinos' "Vampires: The Occult Truth"...
You can read up more of what I posted here.
they do belong to other realities... i call it plains... they belong to different plains... and sometimes both plains ours and theirs merge and we can see them... but they dont have a solid form...
I..well...kinda agree with RR. If ghosts are in fact regular people from another reality though, and not souls that have passed and are stuck here like most believe, then vampires can indeed be ghosts.
Thought I was being literal, was the analogy to hinted for you? Oh well.
I have heard of spirits being able to feed off energy at times in a phycic vamp style, but I believe for the most part Vampires and Spirits are two totally different things. Vampires walk around as real as anything else. They can all come at you in different ways, and someone may blur the line of spirit with vampire.
But even in legends vampires were said to be able to take the form of non corporeal mist. In that state would they not be considered as a ghost? As far as vampires whether or not they have a soul, you can not be damned to hell if you do not have a soul.
I dont think they would be a ghost however some would see them that way.
If you can turn corporeal or incorporeal I think it would just be one of the added myths to vampire.incorporeal means they can not affect things while in that state. So feeding would be an inability.
I think that relating the two is a bit of a stretch on the imagination ..... they may both me supernatural if you like but not related..
By accepted convention, ghosts do not have bodies and vampires do. Therefore, vampires would not be ghosts.
vampyres are not ghost because of the phsical form they have and it was mentioned that ghost inhabiting the body which is not true for they usually inhabit the body which they pershed with. But a good posting.
yes i think Vampires are the living dead i mean have you ever heard of a ghost biteing a person
There are many different beings and I believe that there are vampire ghosts.
by definition a vampire is not a ghost. But could I think be considered the ghost of the human that once was.
vampires are not ghosts we just preceive them to be b/c who has really seen a true horror film vampire....
I don't think vampires can be ghosts, they are already dead.. they may contain powers like ghost.. but i feel they are totally different
I belive they are not ghosts of any kind. Vampires feed themselfs, they drink blood to survive. Ghosts cannot do it couse they dont have a body.Vampires have a body and you can see them.
P. M.
ghosts cannot take solid form so how can a vampire bite someone if they are a ghost?vampires are solid beingslike you or me
Well can there possibly be ghosts of vampires? As in..after they would die?
Well a ghost of a vampire would no longer need to drink blood to survive, right? Just like the ghosts of people don't need to eat or drink to survive.
There is apparently a part of my town that is haunted by a ghost vampire
dont think vamps are ghosts like many others have said how would it bite if it couldnt touch
Dealing with a ghost of a vampire I find that hard to swallow pardon the pun. As stated early on most consider vampire soulless and majority of the beliefs on ghosts is its the souls of the formerly living which would over all negate a vampire turning into a ghost.
Unless you play in a white wolf illustrated game.
In which in that game there is always a chance to turn into a ghost, or as they call it a wraith.
i don't think vampires are ghost nor are they real but vampirism is real and has been found thru out the world in both history and today
no we are not ghost we are blood and psy feeders yes but ghost no
Vampires are definately not ghosts as they feed off humans and aren't inanimate. You can't touch a ghost, at least I think you can't. Vampires on the other hand I'm sure you could grab onto.
Maybe alittle of both. They are both, in a way, the undead and they both feed off of the energies around them to stay alive. They may be connected.
i would say no to the vampire ghost thing i mean to drink blood from others they would have to be of flesh like we are and ghosts are basicly air in a sence so how coud air bite and drink the blood of others ?
vamprika thars a great question sence you brought it up.. and this link has a story behind it, i couldnt tell ya my self but just reading about it makes me curios
I think it's a poetic style of speech....
a vampiric ghost...almost a double negative..
No, Vampire's are not ghosts. Ghosts do not have a physical body, where as a Vampire does. A Vampire may be a shape shifter, and maybe disappear. A ghost can only look more"whole."
I'd have to agree with xxBlackHawkxx.
But if they did indeed exist, I don't believe vampires would be anything close as to what ghosts are.
No, they aren't. There are obvious differences in what makes them what they are.
Per the Meriam-Websters Dictionary definition of a ghost:a disembodied soul; especially : the soul of a dead person believed to be an inhabitant of the unseen world or to appear to the living in bodily likeness - I really don't think a vampire is one.
