So the musical stamp has been making an appearance in VR comments and I'm curious if this has become at all an issue since the stamp can be blocked but the music embedded in the stamp will play regardless of blocking or not.
You beat me to it Felix!
I think this give other members too much power over profile pages. In the past, the complaints of stamps always centered around size and stretching the profile, but at least you could block that individual. Sure you could go and ask the member who stamped you with music to remove the coding, but what happens if s/he recently changed names or is no longer active?
I have even heard whispers suggesting if stamps are not regulated, that people would retaliate with even more annoying songs (i.e the chicken dance, brittney spears, and any forsaken song).
Is there anyway to stop the music besides turning the sound off?
I have to say I have only received one and it was from a good friend so I had no reason o attempt to block it. It was also very short, so it did not detract from the audio on my page.
If this becomes an issue I hope that Cancer can provide a mod to the block opion that would also block audio files from the stamped code from activating.
i haven't seen any -- it can't be to bad depending on the music .
Personally, I'd consider a stamp like this rude. About in the same way as visiting someone and taking a dump on the living room floor...
If somebody really feels compelled to add a bit of personalised noise, DO NOT SET IT TO AUTO_START!
That way, if the recipient is interested (s)he can play it on her/his own accord anytime.
So..... if more than one person stamps you with audio, do they both play at once? Wouldn't this be a bit of a problem?
That would be system dependend. And it might look up the system.
Sarras - thats a brilliant analogy!
And you're right, it is just plain rude. I've only had one musical stamp so far, but it didn't half piss me off whenever I had my sound on.
And it doesn't just stay on your profile for three rates. If you look at the 'who's rated you' page, it plays there too. Grrr!
Yeah all embedded music that is set to auto start will play at the same time so long as it's in the most recent three. If you have music on your profile and three stamps with music autostarting, they'd all play at once.
ICK! I haven't gotten an audio stamp yet, but considering the fact that most of the PM's have music on their pages (I do) it should be blocked or only allowed if they aren't autostart. I've had this problem with a couple other sites and it severely brings down load time on the page.
It's just plain rude.
Much worse then stamps that stretch out your page.
I must say that I have not received one yet. But I think I would probably find it rude, especially if I didn't like the song.
Thank God for firefox and the extension to block all autostart sound. Personally I find any autostart music/sound rude but to stamp someone else's profile is exceptionally inconsiderate and rude. I personally feel that autostart video(unless it does not contain sound), music and or sound in a stamp should be banned. People that don't have sound on their profile or portfolio probably have it that way for a reason. People that have sound on their profile or portfolio don't want it garbled up with someone else's sound playing at the same time. I personally am usually listening to music through a media player its bad enough when a page loads up music from the page but then to add music from a stamp would really be annoying with 3 songs or more playing at once. A lot of people are still on dial up and to have to wait for multiple songs to load at once would take forever. I hope that this can get stopped before it gets really popular.
Hmm, so if someone stamps with an "audio" file and you block it the audio still plays? What happens if the audio is something rude? Like :F-you, I hate you and wish you'd die: on a constant loop. Then the person who blocked it would be subjected to that terminal loop forever of a person they don't like? That can't be good.
I have never gotten one of these stamps , however , if I do I will give the person who gives it to me a good talking to . It is rude to not respect peoples wishes with there pages . I for one wish they would just do away with the option of having a stamp with music on it
It's a new feature, right? I'd imagine the bugs are still being worked out, and feedback is probably the best way to get it tweaked so that audio stamps aren't so much of a nuisance...
The problem is deeper. Sometimes you cant have a "rude talking to" because of a name changes or they become inactive.
Luckily on the top three affect your profile, but you will still get the audio on the "see who has rated you" page as well as the "all comments page."
I'm not sure that there is a way to block the coding in a stamp. It would be a matter of policing for audio in stamps.
I don't know if it's a new feature or if it's something that no one knew they could do before. The biggest issue though is that blocking doesn't remove the code it just hides it. So a 'blocked' embedded audio will still function.
I have to admit that it immediately occurred to me as well that someone could use it to leave negative audio comments that are 'unblockable' in order to harrass.
Well then they would receive suspension, but wouldn't it still just keep playing?
That would be the worst.
Personally I already have problems loading my who's rated you page and I have a DSL modem, I can only imagine what it does to dial up costumers.
I have only received one and it was rather brief, but the "statement" it made was rather crude if I do say so myself. I didn't appreciate it much.
Another thing while I'm thinking about it. Those stamps are killers on people who have very slow connections. While I have a fairly decent connection, I do remember what its like to have dial-up and these stamps would make me pull my hair out if my page bogged way down.
It's not a "feature" at all it's just a matter of putting the coding in the stamp just like when you put it in a message or post. The coding is similar to putting a picture in your stamp. Someone just probably thought it was a cute idea and now it's spreading like a virus.
I have never had one stamped on my profile i dont think. i have no speakers to know for sure, but i certainly hope not. personally i think that is just rude to do to someones profile, what if they already have music embedded in their profile? does the stamp with music mess it up? and i agree that it gives others too much control over your profile that you work hard to make.
I have close to a thousand rates can you imagine if even just half had audio stamps? When you go to the all comments page granted only 50 show at a time but if half have audio stamps that's 25 sounds trying to all play at once. If a person is on dial up or has an older system it will likely completely lock up the system. I'm sure that it could also potentially affect the VR server and slow it down having to try to send all that data at once to more than likely several people at once.
I don't have too much sympathy for those with dial up connections. Websites in general have moved beyond that bandwidth capability and I don't believe in playing to the lowest denominator of technology. But load times in general are an issue of cost. The more things like embedded music and video are used in simple features like stamps, the more strain it would likely put on VR in general. My main concern is still more about blocking unwanted sounds and songs than bandwidth.
Ahh, I see. This is indeed a problem then. I'm sure something could be done to prevent embed coding to be put in stamps, but honestly, until I get an audio stamp, I'm not going to put any effort into stopping it...
well maybe it is something that those with audio stamps need to take to the admins. they are really the only ones that can do anything about it. for those that it is a bother to it is at least something to try.
It's true that it doesn't seem to be too popular yet...so there's grace in that. But that's the best time to take action and solve problems and coding issues as opposed to waiting until it's flooded the system and everyone is used to making them.
I'm sure if it reached a proportion where it bothers enough people something would be done about it -- it's been that way in the past!
very true felix, if its a bother to some right now, just imagine how it will be when many are stamping all the profiles with them, by then it may be too much work to put a stop to it. nix it at the beginning and it might not get out of hand. although has any who have been stamped with them messaged the person who did it and asked them to remove the stamp? just a thought. but it should still be taken to an admin.
Personally I don't care one way or another with the audio stamps. I think the ones I have seen are actually really nice.
But concerning the lag and what not when going to a page, 20 seconds of a audio clip doesn't lag as much as constant glittering, sparkling, flashing, and overall animation. That causes more lag than anything.
I have a slower connection and even alot of stamps slow my computer way down . I couldn't imagine having dial up
i dont think its so much the lagging as it is the fact that it messes up any music you might have already on your page or if to many stamp with audio stamps they are all trying to play at the same time.
i have not recieved one yet,and i really dont want one.i have dial up and i wouldnt wanna wait forever for the song to load just to hear it.i dont think i would like it anyway....just like premium members on here,i have to wait forever for the profile to completely load before i can rate it and i hate that.thats just my opinion though.
me123
Well we will see what happens with this i am sure . Hopefully they will have a way to block the audio all together . I have ben looking for an html code or css code to disable all the music on a games page I made and so far can't find one
Hmm...
I think that could definitely be a problem. I've seen them on people's profiles but never on my own.
There is a possible way to block this, I use FireFox and have the add-on Ad-Block Plus. Anywhere there are ads they're removed and I've also noticed, any embed code will show up with a little "block" tag above it. If you can locate where the music is coming from, you can block it.
So if this issue doesn't get resolved, people with FireFox can have at least a partial solution.
I think that they should not be allowed. To much room for abuse.
wow, thanks Kryptick -- I've had trouble on other sites too with embeded codes, I will give this a try.
It's a problem, but a very little one that can be countered easily. Those who are HTML-fluent have the power. I, for one, know a few tricks myself that can completely distort one's profile without an easy counter like the audio stamps. I just hope those who have the power, use it responsibly..
"With great power, comes great responsibility". *pose*
*web-slings awaaay*
Actually there is a much easier add-on for firefox called stop autoplay it stops any embeded autoplay automatically and even if the player is hidden it makes it show up so you can play it if you want to hear it. Unlike adblock (which is a good add-on) it will never play unless you want it to. With adblock it will play until you click block.
That's only on firefox though..not everyone uses that. I sometimes use IE..and other browsers.
Thank you kryptick for the info and yes vampirika I hope so as well .
IE isn't used by most people anymore, but I guess for people with other browsers...
Turn the volume down? lol
..Or stop being a *bleeeep* and simply don't do audio stamps.
If you really don't like the audio stamps messing with your page just ask your friends to come and leave a comment to push it off the page.
Its not that hard to message someone saying "hey this person left an audio clip on my page do you mind commenting so it doesn't ruin my profile layout"
*high five's Vampirika*
I think that they should be stopped. They're just obnoxious.
Abstract -
Why should one go through so much trouble over a little stamp? I think stamps should just have limitations...made by the site admin. On size, what it can and cannot have...ect. One thing to prohibit is the audio thing.
yes but they will still be there when you go to look at all your comments and you will likely end up with several trying to play at once. The best thing would be for people to stop using them because the problem is only going to get worse and will eventually cause problems for the server and that will hurt everyone that uses the site.
I know not everyone uses firefox but at least you know there is an option. For those that don't know firefox is free and with the add-ons you can customize it to suit your needs and have tons of features not available for IE.
Vamprika-Because people are making a big deal about something that I have only seen one time so far.
I can understand where it can be a problem with having someone blocked and still hearing the code, but if you are just saying it needs to be changed because it annoys you or what not, I want to see where it is a big massive thing on the site. I have only seen it one time myself and it wasn't even that bad.
If it annoys you that bad, don't look at the see who's rated you page all that much, or turn your sound down when you go to it. Or just message the person and ask them to remove their stamp.
This very well might be a problem, especially with this Thread now up. Plus many other potential problems...
There should simply be rules with these sort of things.
i dont think music should be included in a stamp,it takes too much attention away from the profile
i haven't gotten one of these yet and i didn't know until now they exist. i think it is rude to just go and put music or audio on someone elses profile. i hope i never get one of these.
Abstract I thank you for your insiteful opinion , however , People like me with a really slow connection it could potentually cause alot of problems . I must say i agree with vampika and most of the others on this one
I think it could pose a problem for various reasons. First and foremost, it could slow down load time. Secondly, if someone already has music on their page, you'll hear 2 songs. They could definitely be annoying and more problems then they're worth.
Seeing how just about everyone that has read this agrees that it is unfavorable for many reasons, if nothing else, we can promote "silent stamping" among the rest until a decision/solution comes from the leadership.
dada dada dada da...dada dada dada da...da-da-da-da
when all is said and done, it's your page to do whatever you want with - staying within the rules of VR that is. So it's only right you should have control over your page, otherwise whats the point of 'blocking'?!!
I think that if there's gonna be stamping rules made to ban audio stamping, that there should be something against page stretching, etc.
Stamping is just a way to let people know that you've rated their profile, not to draw attention to your own, and that's what the music(and also page stretching) is doing.
Audio and Video stamps are a bit much and should not be allowed as in my opinion they detract from the overall point .. THE PERSONS PAGE!!! .... Please are trying to hard to amke everything about them and are forgetting the point of being here..
This is an interesting discussion and one which i have had experience of in the last few days. Prior to that i didn't know you could put audio in a stamp.
Why can't it be part of the T&C's of Premium membership that if you use a stamp it must be no more than x size with no embedded content?
I agree. Audio stamps take attention away from the profile and if the pro has it's own audio and the out come is mass confusion.
could anyone really be so enthralled that they would want to 'sing' about it let alone write a comment of merit?!!!
Well I was rated the other day by a few people and one sent me a message crewing me out that you cant heard my music and that my page is crap because it hurt their head as there is too much music and you cant make any of it out... I found out that some oen had put a music stamp on there and thats what was going on.. I was rated a 2 becasue of someone else stamp.. Go figure??
Is that what that is? It bout drove me nuts trying to figure out where it was coming from! Please, please people don't rate me with them. I love music but I prefer free choice and when I want to hear it! lol
I think the music on a profile should be up to the creator of a profile. this is sort of like hijacking someone else's profile to bring attention to yourself-makes me glad I have no sound on this computer :)
The main problem I see if this spreads: Some will take offence, some might retaliate, and this could severely damage VR.
Thank you soo much Frelix Felix for bringing this issue to attention. I've been stamped twice now with an audio stamp and it's driving me crazy!!! I use IE so i can't block the flaming noise out:((
Granted the first one was fine, just some birds singing, but the second..............sounds like Van Halen on drugs, Help!!!
I have never gotten one of these stamps yet but from all the stuff I have read I am hoping that I don't get one at all I don't think I could handle having a few of them playing all at the same time it would make me nuts.
Ok this came up once with a music player and Cancer said that they were against VR police as it changes a persons Profile.
I haven't received one yet, and hope I never do. I could see this becoming a war between the people who can't seem to act with respect for other people around here. It's a shame that there are so many of them, and that I see half a dozen "This profile is suspended." notices daily.
I would be all for having a set of rules about stamps, say no image bigger than 400x400 and no embedded objects. It's pretty easy for a free member to "stamp" a profile with an image, too--just write your main comment and paste it in with a couple of additional words--though you don't have to worry about the audio stamps from us, I don't think....
I might be able to find a way to do audio even as a free member, but I'd say keep it to audio in the Message Center...it's a respect thing.
And, Wolvie, thanks for the pointer to "Stop Autoplay"--I cuss those music players regularly. Do you also find that you don't see glow effects and altered scrollbars in Firefox as opposed to IE? I notice it when I'm checking things in multiple browsers.
Thank you Radu. Is there something we can do to get rid of them??
This is an administration responsibility.
Nobody else here can get rid of those. At least not without hacking the database. :-)
Took a look at those firefox-extensions. IT is possible to bypass those, sorry, but if you really want to block those, you'll need a hardware-firewall with stateful inspection.
Might mis out on some other things on VR then.
So, some rules, and enforcing those rules as well, concerning rating is definitely necessary.
BTW, whoever said this belongs to another section. Which one, please?
I think this thread is in exactly the right place. After all, it is about VR.
That's what me thinks, too! Guess it just got me a bit p.o.'d that someone stated "It ain't the right place!" without offering alternatives ...
I think this give other members too much power over profile pages. but i dont mind stamps b/c you can block the user or report them for harrassment if it is a continous thing
I must say I never got any,and I honestly would not care,I respect the right of the member to rate as they want, this includ the musical stamp, Iwont refuse the right to anyone or block ppl for stamping, otherwsie I would go against the freedom fo speech and the freedom or rate that Cancer has allowed.
I dont have to like it, but I wont go against the vr manula and vr policy.
And whining against it is not helping, its simply showing disrespect for the right that is the one of the rater, his or her freedom.
I dont have to agree, enjoyor like a rate, but I will respect when it is not doen out fo hatred, profile BOMBING (and I report those) or simple harrassement, like creating a profile for 1 day day to only go and bomb rate then delete the profile.
I can offer the best solution for getting them off your profile.
Just message the person and ask them nicely to remove their stamp. Its that easy. If its against the rules then turn them in. But if it bothers the normal ambiance of your profile that much, just go to the person and ask them to take it off.
You have got a curious concept of "freedom".
It is rather easy to devise a stamp which would make the profile thus stamped unloadable in most browsers.
You ok with that? In the interest of freedom of stamping?
Freedomn can go only so far as it doesn't infringe on someones else. So if I - theoretically, mind you - kill your profile by exercising my freedom to stamp any way I want, where would you be left?
I keep my sound off all the time, so It's not an issue for me, but I can see it becoming a problem.
Correctly speaking the problem is not sound, The real problem is embedded or otherwise active content surreptitiously added to your profile by way of adding a comment.
This is normally seen as a form of defacing a page...
Good point indeed Sarras, It is alot like graffiti on our profiles, please the Gods this doesn't take a hold here!
It occured to me...does this mean that other forms of code could be added in a stamp that are even more problematic? Is the code of a stamp unrelated to the code of the rest of the page or could malicious code override or derail your profile code?
i have one on my myspace and I can't get it off and i did have one on here and it just all of a sudden disapeared.....I don't like them now.
Radu~
I'm glad admin are on this, so will something be done before the problem escalates?
Wish someone would think of others first. We do not need multi players all at once.
I've received one, and fortunately the music was fine. I messaged the music donor and thanked her, since I don't have music on my profile.
She said it was a privilege of being a premium member.
Is it?
Felix, to answer your latest question, yes, I think if it continues, someone will come up with a way to include malicious code in their stamps that will override or derail your profile code. And we all know, all it takes is one person to do it, and then other people jump on the newest bandwagon.
I fully agree with Sarras, and I think I will put his example to reality. If this audio stamp thing doesn't get controlled (ie - banned or otherwise prohibited), I will make my own stamp with my own codes...
Then stamp anyone and everyone..lol we'll see what happens then. =)
I don't mind the stamps the normal picture stamps that is.... but I HATE HATE HATE audio stamps. It annoys the hell out of me.
I have stayed out of this thread for majority of it.However so far I have seen just w audio stamps. I do not believe 2 stamps justifies as it being out of hand. Further more the stamps that really will cause a form of lag more so then the so far audible stamps are the ones that are extremely flashy, glittery and moving. The easiest way to deal with this issue before trying to take it to an admin would be more so ask the person who posted the stamp on your page to just post a new one deleting the audible one.
yes this is the best advice. if it bothers you first ask the person, then if they still dont remove it then report it. I only a had one when I was a premium member. I did just that asked them.
I wouldn’t mind a comment with an audio player, if the music was decent and not obnoxious. And if it wasn’t set to ‘auto_start’ so that I wouldn‘t be bombarded when I long onto my page. I wouldn’t necessarily take it as an insult, jut an annoyance. It’s all about internet etiquette. :P There would be no reason to flame the person who posts the audio player. But if it got out of hand, then the person should think before they post something like that on someone’s page.
I think there should be a ‘delete comments’ option for such things. The rating would still be there, just not the comment.
That's my two cents.
A delete comment option would be rather good or as some websites have an option to allow or not allow a comment to be posted before it takes up your page
