i go to a school where everyone is stereotypical, im also a goth, so i get this question alot, but never know what to say. Why are gothics stereotyped into worshiping the devil and drinking chicken blood?
Well my opinion on this is that people are stupid. I don't know why people think that just because you dress different or have a different religion or so on (could go all night on this) that you aren't any good.
I don't know why people are ignorant like that. I do know that if someone does not like me for who I am, I can't like me for who I am not.

Maybe because so many young goths think it's cool to joke around about worshipping the devil and doing weird stuff like drinking chicken blood....
I don't know about you, but I make a note to devil worship, and drink chicken blood in public atleast once a month.
People are sometimes better left in the dark, let them stereotype. Usually it just means they'll run the other way when they see you coming.
People fear what they do not know and don't understand, and it is easier to lable someone and assume that they will do horible things than to take the time to open their minds and learn about someone.
Everyone is convinced that I'm a devil worshiper just because I dress differently and am stereotyped as "gothic".
My guess is that they think that anyone who's even remotely gothic looking must be "evil" and worship the devil and deal with the occult and have weird obsessions.
These are all good points. I would like to ask you why do you let it bother you? Are they screaming things at you face to face (very annoying) or is it online? I would pity them for their stupidity. It does no good to try to explain. I, personally, would just shake my head and walk away.
I say this because I was name called a LOT in high school. My best friend was a slut. So, I was a slut by association. It was very funny to me to be called a slut when I was actually a virgin. I just laughed at their stupidity.
You have a right to live your life the way that you see fit to live it. If you want to live the goth lifestyle, then just embrace it and let them go hang. Nothing you can say will change the mind of a close minded person.
Sorry, hope this doesn't sound like a lecture or something.
Missouri does not exactly have the most educated people in the world (I am assumign the STL is St Louis).
I also thought we were supposed to drink human blood instead of chicken blood? Less disease...but that is another story.
People's perception of sterotypes are going to be what they are. What is great is the second you leave school and enter real life, being Gothic is what will make you interesting and fun to people.
So, in the meantime, wear a pentagram and chicken blood (but it is realy cranberry juice!)
When I was in school people looked at me with distaste. I never cared that they thought I was wierd or anything. Actually, I took a bit of pleasure in flipping their reality upside down when the opportunity arose.
I think birra made a good point....
most goths actually tend to do things to enhance that very image....and then complain about it when people point it out....
I know looking back on childhood i did...
I usually play up to it. If you can see it occuring before it gets to you (people on the streets are good for it) you can have so much fun screwing with them :D
I have tened to find that people just blanket accusations about stereotype because it is easier than trying to understand something that is different from the "norm".
Also have noticed that goths are usually called loners, morbid, weird or more likely to attempt suicide?
I am a goth, I have lots of friends and I enjoy other peoples company. Yes I like horror movies the more gore the better, but that is only because it takes a lot to frighten me (I would be more frightened if my girlfriend told me she was pregant again).
As for weird - please define weird or normal!!!!
As I have never tried to kill myself, or thought about doing so (yet)
I tell people I am not weird, I may not be conventional, but I'm not weird :P
I know I'm weird and morbid lol I love being weird always have and always will and I'm so not goth I may dress like but all it is is a label and labels are meant to be placed on soup cans not people lol
Very well said livingdeadgirl, I am a pesron with a soul not some product in a supermarket
I think many people see goths as satanic and devil worshippers simply because we are fond of black and most people think we are scary looking, i guess they jump to conclusions since satainsts also have a tendency to wear black.
intresting many people felt scared of me becouse i was a goth and still am now as I was going to school becouse i didnt follow the norm or act like everyone else and was also very intrested in wicca they thought becouse of their ignorance that i was a devil worshiper the truth is many goth that i have met includiong my self are happy people I just think u should let things roll of you if you hear a comment well so let it be I know its hard but I had to learn that some people arent worth explaing things to if they wanted to befreind you then they would get to know the real you at this age your in I would suggest that you just go about your rutine take it easy have fun be yourself if people cant accept that then they are not worth it
I wear what I want. People get confused and I love it. They dont realize that just because I love black and wear it often, it doesnt mean that I cant wear yellow, or blue, or even pink.
people are just dumb
people assume because i am into the bdsm life style i sleep with all kinds of people
but because you look and act different that will happen, sad but true
Simple: Because we do... :)
Seriously, it's a knee jerk ignorant reaction. If one of your teachers started showing up in full Goth dress for no apparent reason the admin would freak out. Why? Ignorance. Granted, certain indivduals have given the "Goth" style a bad rap. Those two shit heads from Columbine didn't help. I'm not sure where your class mates get their info.
i agree with november grey..... ppl fear what they don't understand... most of the population wants to be seen as "normal" but inside they are closet gothics, vampires, bondage pll etc.
ppl need to loosen up in life and learn to let ppl do as they plz.....
Society does not seem to accept things that are not norm, goth, vampires...etc. for the fear of their kids or grandkids may be come part of this society. i donot see any difference between these societies myself except beliefs.
People that stereotype others have no true thought process they can call their own. They can not think for themselves. There for they follow the trend of society.
So for someone to say that all persons that consider themselves Gothic to worship the devil and drink chicken blood is wrong. A false statement.
And I have yet to personally meet a person of Gothic nature that worships the devil and drink chicken blood. Maybe one or the other. But never together.
I'd say it has to do with the darkness factor. I mean, gothcs like black, dark reds, dark purples... We're drawn to the darker aspects of life. Most people who don't understand the beauty of the darkness automatically assume that the part of the dark we're drawn to has to do with devil worship, black arts, demon conjouring.... It's pretty much something ignorant, misinformed people say gothic is because they don't understand why someone would be drawn to darker aspects of life rather than pretty uber pinkness.
there's alot of ingnorant judgements made about ppl, especailly based on their outward appearance..
dont let it bother you, just be your own person, true to yourself.
It's just the way it is. Those brought up in a so-called 'normal' life, don't understand alternative lifestyles and what ever they don't understand they make fun to make themselves feel smarter.
I think that made sense...LOL
Sheer ignorance is usually the answer. And there have been those that like to call themselves Goth and like to play a certain part that they have no clue about because they think it makes them cool or different.
Just blow them off, people like that aren't worth your time.
wow im glad i never got that question.... most people just left us alone. however it was the bi/pagen thing that every one had a problem with
Whenever someone asks me 2are you a goth" I would normally ask them for their defenition of the word. I tell them yes I wear a lot of black, use eyeliner a lot, enjoy reading about & talking about vampires & the occult. I like to spend time in the dark but equally I love being on the beach in summer, have a happy outgoing personality & enjoy watching sex & the city whilst drinking white wine. I then ask them if all that makes me a goth. People normally laugh & answer no!
The guys at Columbine weren't Goths...that was just assumed and later they told they were in some group or other but it wasn't goth.
Speaking as an older person there was NO goth when I was young but I noticed as generations passed that in school kids formed little cliques that coincided with either hobbies or the music they listened to and there were rivalries and people dressed in a certain manner but this has not always been the case and quite frankly I would like to see strict dress codes go back into place so all this bickering and sterotyping would stop. I feel there is a time and a place to express your philosophies but it isn't always at school or other places. It is just as bad to go overboard with it as it is for those who are ignorant not to educate themselves about those that consider themselves goth.
But there have been movements that wore all black long before the goth one...sorry guys but you didn't invent that. The beatnik was known for their all black dress clear back in the 50s and their antisocial behavior. Even though it sprang out of a literary trend it grew and people would go to clubs to read their poetry and the dress for this culture was black and people thought they were weird and a whole number of things. Many in the occult community have always been associated with black clothing because for some reason they think its the way to dress. It reminds one of darkness but whoever said those topics were bad anyway. But things have been abused on both ends and all the media hype. Many of the people who have gone off the deep end have been from Vampyrefreaks and it wasnt because of the group itself but unsupervised under legal age people. Because of all the sensationalism, rag magazines like Star and the Enquirer it has stigmatized the view of the public into thinking if one is goth it is bad and that is not true. Individuals can be bad but a philosophy and way of life is something else.
When I was in school it was smoking and leather jackets, lol...those were the bad evil godless ones, lol.
I think just because you are goth persay, you dont have to wear black...I am a Satanist by choice but i do not go out and worship the devil because that isnt what a Satanist is...We worship Our-selves and not Satan, just like most said here, it is what they dont understand, they fear..Instead of trying to understand, they just make fun..shrugs
well i think it do to the dark cloths goths were.. personally black represents alot of things like death, depresion, the dark saton all kinds of stuff
labeling in general isnt right, alot of ppl look a certain way but act differently.
I think there are a few who are into that crazy kinda stuff and have ruined it for others who are not into it at all because the media is not going to comment on how nice goths are just on the ones that are doing things that make other goths look bad because we are different then the societies view of the norm
yeah even if some of "shooters" are goths, the percentage is astronomically small considering the alternative communities...
its a load of you know what to think every dark kid is gonna shoot up the place.
LOL Maybe we should back to wearing bright clothes, getting blue tattoos, burning down the towns, and carrying off the women. LOL
Why are gothics stereotyped into worshiping the devil and drinking chicken blood?
That Is A Load Of Lies...not all of us are.
Now a day school kids see people who dress in all black, and blare death metal, and were black make up are goth. And they see that as evil and they warship the devil.
Hears what I have to say on it.
1. Just cuz you were black everyday and are "dark". Does not, Not mean you are goth.
2. Kids now a days are stupid and have no clue really.
3. Goth is a state of mind a life style, not something you can buy a HotTopic.
okay labels suck & i hate them!
just tells those dipshits to fuck off lol
i get that stuff a lot, & i really dont care lol, i usually play along [its fun] or be sarcastic
but you seem to care, so just tell them to fuck off & be yourself, because usually the ppl who ask those questions are fake, plastic ppl who aren't themselves
hell sometimes i do that whole "white goth thing" just to mess with ppl, not only the norms but my own community.
I barly have anything black i wear anymore, and my music ranges from hiphop, jazz, classic, Batoven, type o negative, to anything you can think of.
i wear what i feel lik wearing & black is my favorite color, so i wear it a lot, i listen to spanish rap [only rap i can actually stand, let alone love], rock & techno
Alot of people miss understand things, I like black, and red to, but my Fav color is green. and my fav animal is a butterfly. People who have no clue as to what goth is, call me a fake, I laugh and know i am right.
Its all in your heart mind, body, and soul
ppl just label me, some are like she's a goth/emo & im like i hate labels shut up, while other ppl are like she's sooo hyper she's a fake & i just laugh
Drinking chicken blood I don't know. the closest animal blood physically to human blood is pig's blood because there bones are more similar to our own. But as far as rituals and rites of any religion all I have ever heard used is goats blood and raven's blood. Most people seem to think that the color black represents evil although I don't know where that all comes from.
my guess why ppl think black is evil is that its dark & ppl are scared of the dark lol
Atonement some respected me, some feared me others just stayed away from me.
I never once lied nor sugar coated anything in school, I was one of the few true gothic people in my school.
I would like to make a small comment on Satanism. This title is rather generic like saying Chrisitian can mean a number of denominations and so it is with Satanism. Not all worship self...that is LaVeyan Satanism for the most part which has branched into many subgroups but there are Theistic, Traditional and a number of names they use that worship the deity in the concept of Judeo/Christianity. They do exist and this is the group most think of because yes, they haven't taken the time to research and know it isn't the same thing for all those that espouse to be Satanists. Too bad dressing in black and the Goth scene has been associated with it. Its a sure sign for being persecuted.
Only takes one or two publicized events and people go off the deep end with generalizing everyone is like the bad seeds. Unfortunately, too many ignorant people that do not take the time to learn and have an open mind.
Like people scoff at some people that are from the south, or live in trailer homes; people that wear a blue or red bandana and have tats are either crips or bloods...
It is hard to break away from stereotyping!
Considering that goths have been dead since the Middle Ages and the gothic subculture has been dead since the 80's this topic is pointless.
People are blinded so much by ignorance that they don't take the time to further understand goth's so they label or stereotype those people who are into it by calling them evil, devil worshippers who drink blood, wear black, listen to loud rock music, hang out in grave yards, etc. So these people struggle to find exeptance in communities who shun them like their some kind of disease or plague. I do have more to add to this but suppers on the way and I gotta go for now.
This whole thread brings up a thing I say every now and then:
To be weird is to be normal, to be normal is to be weird.
If that does not not you for a loop. It means that to be different is normal. But to fit in is trully weird (or something like that).
Buy being different, by being goth, in your mind or in how you dress. Can through people into a loop and they label either wrongly or pick up the wrong information. People do not get it, sometimes when they think they do they still do not. I have always dressed in a way no one noticed, what I was (given that I new it a little while I was there, but like what six years after it is becoming more and more into the open). Yes I have yet to change how I dress, but I can feel that draw more and more.
Plus one of my best friends was a goth while I was there. Today one one my best friends is a goth all the way to how she dresses.
because people fear and make fun of things they dont understand
PyramidxHead or they fear what they don't know, for the fact they don't wanna take there times to get to know someone.
Some people fear what they don't know. They close their minds to learning new things - therefore, they end up believing what they hear from others rather than finding things out for themselves.
I am not a fan of stereotyping and labeling - i feel it's better to get to know each person and see the real them for who they are. Everyone is unique. Be true to yourself.
They saw it in on TV (in a commercial)so it must be true.
They heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend...
They met a poser goth who may have at one time been a poser satan worshiper...
It is so much easier to pick on goths about stereo types then then Jocks about homo erotic stereo types...
Hasn't everyone met some fool in old clothes carrying war weapons?
the stoners are all plotting to blow up the quad...
the punks don't care.
the metal heads hate people more then you think...
But if people are left in the Dark...(NPI) about goth then they don't deserve the truth so do what goths do best...ignore them and let them decay in their own ignorance...time will show that their cliques are shallow and then they will be alone.
because people ar ignorant and it what they were told growing up so they tend to believe it. its stupid and insane and if more people were actually told the truth they would be better educated on the whole goth subject. trouble is many dont wanna learn the real facts goth is deffrent so there for we must all worship the devil.....
people are always scared they dont wanna come near me cause they think i worship the devil nd that i will try to kill them i dont see my self as goth i just like wear black i thkn its stupid that ppl do believe the worst bout what goth coudl be
people are always scared they dont wanna come near me cause they think i worship the devil nd that i will try to kill them i dont see my self as goth i just like wear black i thkn its stupid that ppl do believe the worst bout what goth coudl be
I agree with novembergray. People fear the unknown. and Hollyweird makes it believable.
i agree with cadewolf too, but you dont need to says anything really so if they ask you why then ask them why they dress the way they do and see what happens
Last night I had my point proven to me even more.
Last night I had to say these three things to a group of "goths" and walking out I turn and say "Your hottopic tag is hanging out"
Like I say and will keep sayen:
1. Just cuz you were black everyday and are "dark". Does not, Not mean you are goth.
2. Kids now a days are stupid and have no clue really.
3. Goth is a state of mind a life style, not something you can buy a HotTopic.
Thank you Darkicewolf!
You are definitely my hero for the day.
People do not understand that being Gothic in nature means that you wear black all the time. And the whole, you can buy Goth at Hottopic is completely wrong. If you wear Hottopic all the time and say "OMG! I'm so Goth! Look at the new pants I bought from HT!." You're are by far the most prissy non-goth I have ever met.
Pardon me while I go scrap my tongue with a razor blade after that line.
here's proof that ppl fear ""goths"" for no reason.
recently in my town a stupid emo kid that had just broken up with his GF and wanted to be "famous" shot up a local mall department store, there happens to be a hot topic in that mall, now they have a Mall security gaurd stationed outside of hot topic all day. literally.
and also about a week after that event i got on a bus sat near the front away from most ppl cause i generally dont like them..but for some reason 3 ppl got up and moved to the other side of the bus like that would matter if i went psycho...
For the record, the number of goths/emos/crazy weirdos that shoot up places cause they are insane or retarded is small compared to the ammount of gang bangers shooting up urban streets all the time, but you dont see ppl she away from rap loving wanabee gansters...
thats how hypocritical our society is today.
haha, i get most of my "goth" clothing at good will.
i only get tripps pants at hot topic.
The easy answer: people are ignorant. Its easier to pigeonhole you and make you into something that you are not instead of actually finding out who you are.
Chicken blood?
Ew peagons taste better.
LOL no seriously, like the rest said it's just ignorance and that certain ''goths'' like to brag about it, and then whine because they're ''misunderstood.''
-_-
i think it is because they dress diffrent than other people so right away they worship the devil
i think its all in the way you look and present yourself
I find if you get labeled for being one thing, turn around and be the different. That makes people think.
every school is like that hunny. and it's mainly just the ghetto peices of shit that think that because they're ignorant and think they are above all others. anywho, i havent had that problem much because a lot of my school is in the alternative/emo/goth/scene crowd, so we don't have many problems as far as that goes.
It's because people don't study the culture or the reason behind why people dress certain ways etc. As in any case of prejudice.
It's just simple basic human nature to fear what they do not understand...then make fun of it.
Pigeon hole?
I saw one of those flying over me once just before I got whitewashed in the eye.
"freedom of choice" people dont understand the meaning of the phrase and bash everything that doesnt fit in to thier own beliefs. I say people grow up and accept change
I don't know, there seems to be a stereotype along with every label, including "prep". I guess it's just our nature to categorize everything into a box and think they're all the same. That just tends to be the gothic stereotype, just like "cutter" tends to be the emo stereotype and "closed-minded bitch" tends to be the prep stereotype.
I think it is for the simple reason they are different then what is concidering normal for them. They have no knowledge so they simply put them in the satanist folder because that is easy.
I think the stereotype for goths worshipping Satan and sacrificing chickens was made by a complete idiot.
I remeber this girl asking me since I was goth if I sacrifice babies to Satan. I told why do you have a baby around, let's just say she never looked or said anything to me
why is everything based on sight?shouldnt people
realize to get-to-know-the soul thing?
I mean..i dont stare donw an old man and think..
"Oh My God...a prune worshiping zombie"!
Stupid kids and there parents mouths.
If your goth you "must be a devil worshiper" Remember fools will always be fools. Just be you and enjoy your life.
We can't stop people from taking stereotypes seriously. There will always be ignorant people in the world. So I say just live you life how ever you want to live it, and never mind what others think of you or what they think you do. If you know you're not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't worry about anything.
I think it's because they are pea brained and like to be part of the flock.
next time some one says that to you ask them how does it feel to be a sheep?
This world is going to always be full of small minded idiots, it's just easier for them then to actually get to know people.
people think because goths dress different that they must be devil worshippers
People fear the unknown. Therefore to make up for not having the courage to find out about different people they make up stereotypes to make themselves feel better.
Darkchyld i agree with you tht ppl fear the unknown...When my son started in kindergarden one year ago i had many strange looks from the other parents etc...Even some have later mentioned they did feel uncomfortable by the fact i wear black,studds/spikes and teased black hair...But they got to know me ...today many say hi and smile when we come....so its partly up to one self to break the fear down in others ,at least in the local area where you come..like school, work, kindergardens, shops ,whtever..Of course it happens some in beteewn simply cant handle their fear..I have ex. been denied to buy a sandwich by a guy tht really looked like he was gonna pee in his pants...suddenly the shop was closed..when i came back same way an hour later it was still open...Wht i have experienced most here in denmark is fear from moslems ,they really think i am devil worshipper...we didnt have shootings like columbine ,but we had riots where fires were started and stones thrown at police...I am sometimes thought to have been part of this...ppl are surprised when they find out i am against riots and violence...
A stupid few who were ignorant and posing as a goth ruined it for true believers.
That is absolutely correct. It is really quite ignorant , but they dont take the time to get to know the different. When really if they would just take the time .. They might actually like the person they feared to begin with.
