I know this is an odd question but is this existance all that great we work all our lives to just beable to feed and clothes ourselfs we do not live a life of luxury

I don't know what everyone believes happens after death but if you follow your beliefs don't you get rewarded in the after life so why does everyone fear death itself?

I think very few people (beliefs aside or not) would be able to face immenent mortality (gunpoint, hostage crisis, etc) and continue to say that they are perfectly happy to face death as 'their time'.

The fear is that regardless of what comes next, people are comfortable with knowing they've got more life ahead of them...and the thought of that ending is for the most part...frightening. As long as we can convince ourselves that death is something distant (years or more away), it's easy to suggest that we don't fear it.

I could not agree more with Felix,he makes a very good point when it comes to death in certain situations. Me personally,I would rather die in my sleep, peacefully, then to die in a tragic accident or bad situation such as at gun point or other.
So yes I fear death,as I would rather live as long as I can,to an old age.

I fear it because I don't know what is going to happen next. I am comfortable being alive. I don't want to leave my children. It only scares me because of the unknown. If I knew it was going to be all good and I will go on in death I would be more comfortable with it.

Looks like a case of semantics, again.
I, and I think this goes for quite some people, do not fear death.

Death as in being gone, no longer alive, even without afterlife. Personally I don't believe in any, but the jury's still out on that.

On the other hand, I'm rather concerned about my manner of dying. I consider it much more advisable to pass away peacefully in my sleep, the to die gut-shot and in agony...

The fact of not being alive anymore doesn't make me afraid. I just might be sorry to miss out on some information about events to come ...
The fact of slowly losing my mind, needing help to wipe my ass, being just conscious enough to realise my situation ...
Now, THAT would scare me!

I agree with SarraS

I don't think many people would fear death as in the not being here no more, they might worry what would happen in the lives of their loved ones because of them dying.

I think I would fear the pain as I died from an accident with a mincer, burning to death, choking and all those other really painful ways to go that we simply don't think about.

but fearing death - the *click* & lights out, or bright tunnel with choir ... no

Separating death from entropy, perhaps we fade away energy disperses we know that scientifically, the human brain is a reactive organ it reacts to chemical electric grids, when the circiut is "Jolted' it has an effect on the over all system, the mystifing stuff is what happens after, that is good for those that like to rush ahead and miss the dying part. Death is done the final, ok but entropy has stages, So the unpleasent ones are easier to glance over, expecially to the big after surprise. Some would say after life ok so we just go on, in a divine presence not far removed from this been there done that, now I got wings and I have to wait for others to join me. others who will keep calling me back to earth to south them of their grief... yea we die are you going to waste your life on doing it. Are you going to invest what energy you have to create memarable things for others to recall about you. are are you going to wait until you have to stand in line as a spirit to speak to a medium, that screws up your message every time, making you sound like a person that cannot communicate except in vague referances. As a child we have new things that astoind us, simple things, things that fasinate us are memorable. as we get older entropy fades that we cling to it. Death the final stage, the current disperses, if even a infinite partical of us floats around it is enough to know that I will be remembered.

Felix felix I understand what you are saying in your post that many would not wan to die if at gunpoint, hostage etc.. yet I myself can say I am not afraid of dying the only death I fear or better word is the death that takes my loved ones before me and I no longer have them around(it is selfish as my father says) we want to be able to all go together yet we cannot.

I know I would gladly die for a loved one or someone close to me because I have lived a full life and then some, I do not fear death yet I know I will be missed by many who love me and that is upsetting.

Death is just a part of life we have to deal with to reach the eternal life, we cannot live forever as we would like so that we are all still with our loved ones.

But fear Death No I do not fear it.. I will embrace it just as my Mother before me did and my brotherand several other loved ones they were happy that their journey was over here on this earth and passing on to their eternal Life..

It is just how a person percieves the idea I feel.. yet there are many that would be as Felix felix said .... Not wanting to die because of their child ren or loved ones or jusat they have so much to still live for.

So it depends on each person and how they feel or see death ...

Just an opinion

SarraS has said it very well.

Personally I do not fear death because when my time comes, I have had a good life filled with memories, and my sould will live on in my children and grandchildren.

I do not think it is death itself people fear. I think the real fear lies in the not knowing part.

We can speculate all we want on what happens when our string of life is cut, some belives in the christian heaven/hell, others belive in reincarnation etc, and your belive is good to have, but it does not provide you with the answers you are looking for.

Most people here have expressed the same things that I feel, I don't fear death, I fear what my death would do to my loved ones, and I wouldn't like a painful death either but I do believe that even in that situation the body takes over and blocks the pain after a while.

I think the prospect people limit them selves to allows the life to linger in proxy to this planet that you are no longer a part of, yet the burden is in the assumtion that a ghost will be lonely, that on the other side there is a possibility of longing still, I did that plenty here I am over it to me that is hell. I have been restricted to this narrow projected dimension. I stir a ghost... blah to be at the becon call evey time someone thinks my name i come like a puppy to assure them that they will die as well. Only to have some "medium" mis interpite me. That is hell to me.

I think people are afraid of death because of not knowing what happens then, maybe because they don't want to leave their love ones.
I am not afraid of dying, however what scares the hell out of me is dying while my children are young. I want to grow old and watch them raise their own! But thats just me!

Self preservation is one of mans greatest instincts, and death doesn't figure into preserving ones life.
To most I think they fear losing their loved ones or fear what will happen with their loved ones when they're gone, who will take their place and protect their loved ones.
As for death itself, I fear how death will come and whether it is going to be an agonizing death or not, more than death itself.

Attaching familiar things to the after life, even using the term life after death some people may see it as simulair to this life only they are in an advanced state of being. Yet all the sensationalism around death and promises of power over death become popular when attached to that fear, or uncertainty in the beyond physical inhabitation of this body. I wonder if it is death people ultimately fear or the separation.

I don't welcome death, nor do I fear it.

Instead, I concentrate on living my life, enjoying time with my wife, and preparing for the continuation of life with the upcoming birth of our son.

One reason many fear death, dispite the open promise of a paradise...there is no real proof that there is anything after we die. Without this proof, many subconsciously fear for an empty demise.

I do not fear death and cannot explain the feelings of some stranger. How can one live the way they are supposed to if their life had no meaning and would never end?? ITs just the releasing of ones spirit to another plane. The only thing i would worry about would be the way i would be released from this plane.

In the words of the great Robbie Williams, "I'm not scared to die, I just don't want to". Why do I not welcome death? Well personally I prefer the idea of being alive to being dead.

Yes most people's lives seem to revolve around spending all our time working to feed and clothe ourselves. However, they do not have to. If some people can succeed and have exciting lives, what stops others doing the same? Nothing is set in stone, so I say enjoy life as much as you can while you're here.

Maybe it's the fear of not knowing for sure what lays ahead for you, or how it will happen. Also religions and beliefs vary. For some they may believe that they will burn in a lake of fire if they were not good enough. For me, yes it is a bit scary. What if I'm not finished completing everything I would like to do in my lifetime. What if I'm still somewhat young, or it's a tremendously painful way to go. All those things factor in, and personally they contribute to me being a tad bit fearful of death.

I think those who are more outspoken and constantly claim that they aren't afraid of death truly are more so than most others. Denial of fear is ridiculous.

I have feared death because I have loved life, but death will come no matter what and I accept that.

Instead of concentrating on death and telling myself over and over that I am not afraid of it, I instead concentrate on life and try to savor it.

Queen of Forever and Cherry Abvocate A fresh breeze you have made present for me. Such statements show me there are some who separate the emetions of death from the spirit. as some one else mentioned maybe we fear not being accomplished enough to die, or the attachments we have being severed. The spirit if it is secure in the faith of the purpose should tug only slightly on the emotions. If faith is tangled in emetions ... it is only mentally deep in you and subject to flutter at that moment. also well stated it is the transition that most fear. I am comfortable with being Beyond... I plan to relax as much as i can, until the hard part is over.

Anann you say that the ones who say they do not fear death fears it most or more.... I have been dead 3 x's and I myself can say it was a very peaceful thing and I feel I was revived tho' cause it was not my time and that I had many things to do yet, I can say since then I have saved many lives (I work in the medical field) and have touched many lives since then and I do feel I made a difference in their life.... I hope so at least.. so when I say I do not fear death I am not more afraid than others, Nor do I judge anyone who may say what their opinion is, because I have no clue what they have experienced in thier lives.

Just how I feel ...and how I am.*blunt*

I am not really sure if I fear it exactly. I do not want to pass on right now because I do not want to miss out on my children growing up. They are still young and still have a lot of "firsts" that I have yet to see.

I suppose that once I am older I might welcome death, but if stick with the though that death is the end, I don't ever want it to end. If death is the start of something new, then I would welcome it. :)

If my consciousness gets tangled with my spirits purpose... then I would fear death, as an uncertainty.

Since i view my soul coexist with yet separate from my soul then to let it go is ideal to moving on to something else. If I focus on the very moment or a prolonged death then my conciousness bares the brunt, tring to verify logically the pfaith, perhaps seeking physical confermation... something I would die waiting for in my faith. So with training and a foundation for the soul taking the mental attachments away My soul is getting lighter everyday, and I don't require a sign or fuzzy feeling to know this.

It is Okay to except Nothing, the attachment of the mental to the soul was what made me fear death as a youth. I only fear the transition( the cause of death), yet I am sure that is healthy.

Self preservation is one of mans greatest instincts, and death doesn't figure into preserving ones life.

But just the same....

It's not the essence of dieing that makes people fear death. Its the fact that you will loose everything that you had tried so hard to achieve in your personal ambitions in your life and those that fear it the most have nothing to leave behind for their legacy.

My deepest sorrowful feeling regarding death is the knowledge that those who truly love me will feel pain upon my passing. I wish I could figure out a recipe to remove that pain. The truest thing I have managed so far, is to make sure that the people I love know they are loved, and that they know I feel loved and am happy.

I dont fear death. I did at one time but I realized that I was more afraid of the pain of actually dieing. Sure, you can die in your sleep, but you could also die as a horrific pile of hamburger after a plane crash.

Death is inevitable, at least in the context of the body. Your legacy and/or genes can live much, much longer. That is something to be proud of if you are at peace with where you are at in life.

A person is energy. Energy just moves about, neither made nor destroyed. Thats the first law of thermodynamics. You will be around for a long, long time in one form or another. As Carl Sagan says, "We are all just star-stuff."

I believe Leary actually documented his last bit of time among the living. However, he really wasn't qualified to call it the "last" great trip. Who is to say that their won't be another waiting for you afterwards.?

As a side note, Professor Hoffman, who had such a great impact on Mr. Leary just passed away at the grand age of 102.

RIP.

People fear change, and death is a change, leaving those we care about behind, no one knows for sure what takes place at death, many have beiliefs that make the thought of death more pleasant, but I think it may be a deep seeded fear of the unknown within our hearts.

An Analogy, If my life was like living in a house, I would like my house so much my house has everything i put into it. I will eventually move out. If I am evicted I can react many different ways, depending on certain factors, am I supported out side my house, well I have people I know with houses so I can be comforted by the possibility that I can stay tempary with them in their houses, even though I may not agree with how they run their house.

If I have no housed friends, I can be scared that I am going to be on the streets. Ideally i would invest some time in my housed past to study alternatives to housing, like camping, perhaps even joining a camping based group. So that although it
doesn't change the fact that I am lossing my habitat
it just lets me know that when I leave I won't just crash land on the street.

Now what about that last yard sell?

If I was to be lossing my place and a person said we have other people that lost there place around you and they want to tell you not to worry and that if you give us money you can end up in this big luxerious house, I would be suspious of real estate
fraud. Having been on the streets before some are only inconvinced by the idea of lossing their home.

The expectation of leasure isbest tossed to the side when planning new housing for most people I know just want a resting place and some place to put their belongings.

I think most people fear death because there is a possibility of no after life. Just nothingness for the rest of non-existence.

When you think about it, that is a terrifying concept.

I am not a religous person. My parents never took me to church and they do not practice any sort of religion. So I have nothing to base what my afterlife will be like.
When I was about six the thought of death scared me. I love color and sounds and having my eyes open to see the things around me. The thought of not being able to see those things again is what scared me.

Many people fear homelessness for the same reason... yet they seldom stockpile motel vouchers and camping gear. The fear of separation from possession of what made you You. Ceasing to exist is that fear of death? To me fear of death is how I am separated from this vessel, I am between the long suffering death or the Swift in the back in line to an amusement park death, death physics are cleaning up right now on this very theme. How do I know? Because I sat through an interview with one.

I will be honest I do fear death. And wish to live forever.
I am not wiaintg around for my "time" to go. I Live and go forward, I do not run to death, I take great care of myself. Yet I allow myself to live to the fullest, safely and those who doubt look closely and you will see it is true.

I fear death and wish never to meet it. But I am also realsitic and know it will come one day. To take me away.

Because death is something unknown. People who have lived their lives under protection from everything that can hurt them learn to fear the things that they know nothing about. If we are adventurous, and like to try new things, or explore the unknown then we will learn not to fear death, or anything for that matter.

Put it to your this way about death. When people die from old age or even in some type of sccident at least you don't have to suffer anymore then if you were alive and got hurt but was able to pool through it adventually after suffering some aches and pains.

The comment above that implies that I welcome death was me being sarcastic to show stupid it looks when people say that they welcome death.

If you're living...the point is to be alive...not to welcome death. Life is too short to welcome death...so while you're living...welcome life...because death will come soon enough. Is it because people are afraid of the inevitable that they want to embrace it...(that's still different than welcoming it)...because that's easier than fighting it?

I guess most people don't believe in physical immortality...

Since this is called Vampire Rave...I will bring up that it's the romantisism of vampires. Immortality.

Yeah...I agree....Why the fuck would you welcome death, if you are living??? That's stupidity...It's like it defeats the point of living in the first place if you are welcoming death.

If you like life, and want to live, then you surely shouldn't welcome death...I agree that EMBRACING death is a lot different than WELCOMING it...

If you are a person that remembers things from other lifes or other realities...If you have been outside of time, and know the inevitable..Then, instead of welcoming something you dread (unless you don't want to exist here anymore, or perhaps not at all) then you should be strong, but have a fight..because generally ppl who give up, die a lot easier, than those who put up a fight..and..if it's going to happen..than you can try to fight it while embracing it, at the same time. I want to live forever too! I would rather just (at will) go to other bodies, or realities...I don't want to die though...I don't want to feel this body struggle...I don't want to do it...I remember doing things like that in other times...I don't want to do that...I will do all I can to prevent death...and prolong life...
