As I am sure most people have seen the movie that came out a few years back in 2000,Pay it Forward, here is a link for it though, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223897/
Great Movie .

Well in the movie, it was tested to see that if you just do something good with out expecting something in return, as me and my dear one say, Random Acts of Kindness. A way of making the world we live in a better place one person at a time.

And it can be the simplest things. Hell even a smile to a unknown person can brighten someones day. One thing that I still love to do, I pick a random name and send a card , usually something cheesy just saying have a wonderful day because you Are special. Or while going thru the toll booths paying for the last 2 or 2 cars behind you during rush hour. Seeing someone is short while in line at the store and paying up the difference. Of course donating to charities is always a good thing to. But I think my favorite thing is writing to our soldiers and sending gift boxs and such.

As it has been said nothing goes unnoticed, and in my belief for every good thing you do good things are attracted , as per the law of attraction.

Because in the words of the great AYW, Random Acts of Kindness Rocks !

So my question to you all, is this something you practice in your life and if you do, what do you do ?

As you are well aware, my welcome card into heaven is wearing thin -- I need to pay it forward WITH INTEREST every chance I get! Why did you think I ever began to share my ice cream with AYW?

But seriously, I have been known to just put myself out there for anyone without thought of it coming back to me. If it does -- groovy. If not? *shrug* The point is that I did right by someone. *looks for tough face to put back on*

I don't intentionally go out to help people with the intention of improving my karma. It's just something I do. Earlier in the week I helped an Australian woman find her way to the university near me. I remembered what it was like trying to find my way around a strange city. I think we should always remember the kind things people do for us and use those memories to help others in whatever way we can.

I was brought up this way to do things of kindness without expecting anything. It's just something my dad has always done and now I do in return, such as cutting the lawn for the elderly lady, taking out the garbage for her, once a person at the gas station went over at the gas pump and I gave her the money she went over, things like this I do all the time. I also donate to various charities and NO I do not claim these on my income tax returns. It just makes me feel good knowing that I'm contributing to help out. I consider myself a humanitarian.

I think this is something that everyone should do. There really is no feeling like doing something nice without expecting anything in return, to do the things that can't possibly be repaid.
I do this by putting others before myself, normally in ways that they'd never know, but that bless them and make them happier.

I think that you should do things for other people simply because you know it will help them along during their day. Whether it's giving a homeless person a hot meal or donating money or even just walking the elderly lady's dog because she can't, it's important to have compassion for others.

I think that the good you do for others comes back to you because there are other people looking on you with compassion. I'm not sure that it's so much deserved because you've been caring so much as it is maybe that there are other people out there who are trying to make a difference in your life as well.

I try to practice it every time I can. I absolutely love helping people and making their days better. The only exception is when it is someone who deliberately making people's lives worse, then I try to act as neutral as I can in an attempt to not put out any negative energy.

Sometimes though people act out toward others because they are unhappy themselves. Sometimes those people need more compassion than others do.

It's not easy to show compassion for someone who you see treating people poorly..but sometimes when you do it you will be surprised at the potential change.

I think it's important to show compassion for everyone...not just those who we see as deserving.

I was raised to help others out when in need. I can't stand to see people hurting or in a bind without wanting to help. I always think to myself, "what if this was me?" A recent story that happened. I was in line paying for my food when i remembered i only had $70 for groceries. I started thinking to myself, "oh crap what do i need to keep?" When i went through everything & picked out what i didn't really need (candy, ice cream lol) i still didn't have enough. I thought again, "what now?" I was about to get rid of my dogs food since i figured she had enough for a day longer if i rationed it well, when a lady gave the cashier $10 to cover it. She just smiled & said "if you ever see me on the road hurt, please help me." If i hadn't felt so ashamed for thinking of just me & not my pup i would have hugged her tight. There are still people like that who care & it's nice to find out first hand

Yeah it all seems to come back around if your heart is in the right place by doing it.

That's a really nice story.

People who don't take help because of pride when they really need it and it's offered are really taking away a beautiful feeling that another person could have by being able to help them.

Which is all anyone can do honestly.

Sometimes people help us and we're not even aware that they have. People do fairly selfless things sometimes.

So long as we are being compassionate I believe that our lives are enriched. Even if we never "see" it being done to us I can guarantee it happens.

The altruistic nature of people, exist whether we press others to perticapate, or not. If one persons situation is relieved by the selfless intervention of another, and that person finds themselves with excess resources that would normal be designated to resolve their problems then it is up to them to decide to do so. The nature of man behavior wise is to keep the promotion stack in our favor, the more I am seen extending of my resources the more like I am to be on the "radar of others".

i do things for people because some of the time I can relate to their situation. other times it is because it comes from my heart. I do not expect rewards from heaven. Is'nt this what humankind is people helping people. Communities that have been distroyed by natural diasters we give with our hearts, because it could of been me. I do for people because I want to...not to gain rewards.

I do practice this often, at least once a day. I'll say hello to people in my dorm building that I've never seen before, just to say hello. Like you said, it's the simple things that matter. You don't have to spend a fortune on someone to make a person happy. The greatest gifts in life truly are free! :-)

Thinking that my way of "paying it forward" is by helping others. I am more then willing to help anyone that I can at anytime. Well sis you know that one very well.

I feel that most don't take the help because of pride. Nista says that point very well.

The only hitch I find is that if a person finds out the only reason someone is helping them, is because someone told them to "Pay it forward" then that implies the same "pressure" one the newest member to the chain.

Very true, It is the linking this Pay it forward with Karma that puts me in contention. I don't place much stock in Karma actually, I find that it is not far from divine providence.

here is a case for "Out of the kindness of our hearts, A natural biological case.

In its major conception, karma is the physical, mental and supramental system of neutral rebound, "cause and effect," that is inherent in existence within the bounds of time, space, and causation. Essentially what this means is that the very being which one experiences on (say, as a human being) is governed by an immutable preservation of energy, vibe, and action. It is comparable to the Golden Rule but denies the ostensible arbitrariness of Fate, Destiny, Kismet, or other such Western conceptions by attributing absolute reason and determinism to the workings of the cosmos.

Karma, for these reasons, naturally implies reincarnation or rebirth (though the opposite is not true) since thoughts and deeds in past lives will affect one's current situation. Thus, every individual alike is responsible for the tragedies and good 'fortunes' which are experienced. The concept of an inscrutable "God" figure is not necessary with the idea of karma. It is vital to note that karma is not an instrument of a god, or a single God, but is rather the physical and spiritual 'physics' of being. As gravity governs the motions of heavenly bodies and objects on the surface of the earth, karma governs the motions and happenings of life, both inanimate and animate, unconscious and conscious, in the cosmic realm.

Thus, what certain philosophical viewpoints may term "destiny" or "fate" is in actuality, according to believers of karma, the simple and neutral working out of karma. Many have likened karma to a moral banking system, a credit and debit of good and bad. However, this view falls short of the idea that any sort of action (action being a root meaning of 'karma'), whether we term it 'good' or 'bad', binds us in recurring cause and effect. In order to attain supreme consciousness, to escape the cycle of life, death, and rebirth and the knot of karma one must altogether transcend karma. This method of transcendence is variously dealt with in many streams of not only Hinduism and Buddhism, but other faiths and philosophical systems as well.

From Hinduism the concept of karma was absorbed and developed in different manners in other movements within the other Indian subcontinental (South Asian) religions of Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Although these religions express significant disagreement regarding the particularities of "karma", all four groups have relatively similar notions of what karma is.

In Hinduism Karma first came into being as a concept in Hinduism, largely based on the Vedas and Upanishads. One of the first and most dramatic illustrations of Karma can be found in the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. The original Hindu concept of karma was later enhanced by several other movements within the religion, most notably Vedanta, Yoga, and Tantra.

In Buddhism, only intentional actions are karmic "acts of will". The 'Law of Karma' refers to "cause and effect", but Karma literally means "action" - often indicating intent or cause. Accompanying this usually is a separate tenet called Vipaka, meaning result or effect. The re-action or effect can itself also influence an action, and in this way, the chain of causation continues ad infinitum. When Buddhists talk about karma, they are normally referring to karma/action that is 'tainted' with ignorance - karma that continues to ensure that the being remains in the everlasting cycle of samsara.

This samsaric karma comes in two 'flavours' - 'good' karma, which leads to positive/pleasurable experiences, like high rebirth (as a deva, asura, or human), and bad karma which leads to suffering and low rebirth (as a hell-sufferer, as a preta, or as an animal).

There is also a completely different type of karma that is neither good nor bad, but liberating. This karma allows for the individual to break the uncontrolled cycle of rebirth which always implies suffering, and thereby leave samsara to permanently enter Nirvana.

http://www.indopedia.org/Karma.html

This is an age old belief. It was only popularized by Theosophy and what has been termed "New Age." It was believed by millions long before this time period.

Generally I just stick by the "catch more flies with honey than vinegar" idea.

Everyone gets into stressful situations or has bad days. Just because someone is being short wth you doesn't mean you have to be short back...

...a smile and a kind word can go a long way, especially with someone who is under the gun and stressed out.

People shouldn't need the incentive of karma to do good things, or else the help you give is merely a manifestation of selfishness. We shouldn't need an incentive to do the right thing. The movie, Pay It Forwards, made me bawl like a little girl. The boy never anticipated getting anything back in return; he just wanted to make the world a better place.

Right wolfy, that is our first response.

Sometimes we need to think before we act or respond and consider the other person first.

Like I've always said, the flight delay isn't the fault of the person at the counter - but they can help you. They just had to deal with 100 other angry people... don't be like the other 100.

In that case you are expecting something in return. Maybe you get it, maybe you don't. But if you're nice and you don't get it, you still won't walk away angry.

Sometimes its hard to remember to think of others in the busy lives we lead in this day and age. But I was raised to do just that and to look around me, stay away from the tunnel vision. Whether its taking back a grocery cart for someone, helping the homeless, something small can make a difference for someone else, it may be something big for them.

Yes I do believe in this all and how it works I learnt it. And try to follow it. No one can perfactly follow the path truely based onlaw of karma coz its most simple ad hard to follow. In this law even thoughts are acts and the thoughts changes our resolve... and on the basis of this total buddhism raised with eight paths of buddhism and the matters.

The Law of Karma is among the Big most Law of the Science ( Neuton's Third Law ), Psychic Science (Law of Cause and Effect) and spiritual science (The Law of Karma).

Dabbler interesting web site that you posted here. The idea that even children that young perform the "out of the kindness of ones heart". It was al very interesting to see that the experiment conitnued to show that if the object was just thrown away the child did not go get it. In my views it shows the innocence of a child is just that innocence and pre/ kindness of the heart.

a touching article, dabbler

i think it's obvious how GOOD you feel when you do something for someone else without thought to yourself
and yes i think that comes back to you

i like paying other people's tolls on bridges
specifically the Bay Bridge going into San Francisco, all those people backed up waiting to get through that toll booth always moves me, especially when they are being so patient.... you can be waiting for that toll back in Berkley

anyway, recently we were entering a fair with my niece and a woman approached me and handed me a card for the midway with money still on it. they were leaving and decided to pass it on. they had passed many other people with children but decided to give it to me.

i have no idea why, but i like to think it was something i gave coming back to me.

I know that at times i have done the random acts of kindness. i will not say what they were as that is too personal to me not that it was anything bad just feel i would be betraying their privacy if i told what i did.
I think it is a good thing when people can do something for another for the most part.

i believe in the law of three.. whatever you give you get back threefold... good or bad...

i try to help others when i can ... i met this girl who needed to get to florida to see her son and mother i gave her the money fpr a bus ticket and some food .. i would like to think that if i were in the same situation someone would be kind
enough to help me out..

i often let people stay at my house when they need a place to stay.. some people say i am a doormat, but i like to think that i am a better person for what little i can do.

i believe that's very true
i've also noticed that when i've been not so kind that it's been repaid as well, usually a lot faster than my kindness

If i hesitate to intervene to an inhuman situation that haunts me, I know that if I at least address the situation, or assesses what I am able to do then I will be a part of any potential solution. That is a relief in the long run. Sometimes a hand up, is needed.. not a hand out.

that's a good point there at the end of your comment dabbler

i'm not likely to give a panhandler money, but will give funds to an organization that provides help and shelter to those who need it.

maybe it's my suspicious nature of a lot of human beings
but i would prefer to give a person who tells me they are hungry a sandwich than give them money.

for me it's the physical act of doing something for someone, like paying their toll than giving them the money to pay a toll.

other people i know find the act of giving that person who says they are hungry the money more rewarding.

A reaction, a routine. Not much contemplation, some do so without looking at the person they are handing money to, a hand out, with no connection, it is a token gesture. Not necessarily void of empathy, but when a dead pan handler in New York was found to have a puddle of change in front of his body, a question is raised.

oh my...
did that really happen?

so do people just hand money to make them feel a little better? or to get rid of the person asking?

obviously in that story it didn't do a bit of good

i have conditions that keep me in the house and i tend to shy away from people when out and about, i don't look at a lot of people normally
so that also adds to my wanting to do things more anonymously
like paying other people's toll charges ;]
that one is so easy to do

when someone does a random act for me i am warmed and when i do it for another i get a natural high that lasts the entire day
definitely serendipity

Seldom will you find a person that is angered by such a gesture, when I found a Wallet with 475 dollars in it, I thought, "This is someones rent money." I went and bought a money order, minus a 5% finders fee. Then made it out to the person on the ID, and mailed it back. Sure I was tempted to keep the money, had there been no ID I would have made a token attempt to locate the owner( usually wait in the general area for a person tapping their pocket, and looking about in abject dismay.) to approach them with a simple question.. "Did you lose something?" The navigation of terms to consider that some will be oppurtunistic to "Excuse me did you lose a wallet with money in it?"

The commercial implication to Pay it forward, should be noted, the person that secures the credit.. is first of all a sleaze artist, and secondly an oppertunist.

My friend who luckily has "virgin hair" - just donated her ponytail to "locks of love" - I have donated massage in "The Race For The Cure" - and will gladly again.
I felt as though I got so much more than I gave. I was humbled and it was transforming and amazing.

Plus, I don't really care to help ppl, ALOT of them are bitches who need to end their life, and I don't believe in Karma.

As with most of the others postings here, I do not do nice things for humans merely to have good tidings return my way, I do them because I am for the most part a caring and thoughtful being. I do indeed hope that goodness is not all that makes the world go around or my evil side willl be greatly disapionted.

I do try to, I try with the smile because I remember a lovely poem about starting a smiling epidemic lol.

Also if I see someone in need of help... I do my best to jump in and help. Even if it stopping some ones wayward shopping trolley lol. Or helping a lost kid find his mum. I don't expect repayment nor do I even expect a thank you. I just enjoy the satisfaction of knowing I did my act of random kindness :D

Well I wrote this poem on law of karma inspired with the theosophy of Great Annie Besant she formed theosophical society a long ago...

The Dance With Own Dogma
------------------------------------

The eyes are ripped now, to the smile of the ripper,

Mine inner smile now to the cause, effect is proper…

The entity mine, understands the entity yours now,

It’s the give and take, all the barter exchange now.

The ripper says what you sow you will reap it now,

The law of respect says its give and take evolution…

The tender soul touches why these big subjects now,

It’s the matter of soul to soul or to lose all conscious.

Forget reaping the cause which you did a long ago,

To taste few pints, take from the gallons of old wine.

````~~~~~~~~~~````
In my family we use "Pay it forward" in place of any religion. We've decided that rather than help a church make money - we are only going to help people. Soooo here's what we do....
Rather than worship at a church - we "donate" to someone we think needs help. Like a bum on the side of the road - or even just a friend who's hard up for money - ten dollars here....twenty there....
Locally we have a homeless guy here in our town...his name is Robbie and he's probably never going to get a job or do anything much but get high...BUT - we bought him some army boots last winter so his feet would be warm. We got him a back pack so he could carry his stuff. We bought him some pairs of pants at the army surplus and a jacket. All at different times...he sometimes walks this German Shepard around with him...and so we bought some Advantage Flea and Tick stuff for him....we've done this on and off for about three years now...
I'm a nurse and at the nurse's station where I work, there's this little laminating machine which no one ever uses...so every Wednesday I turn it on and practice "random acts of kindness" where I laminate anyone's insurance cards. I know it's stupid, but it really makes people happy. It takes like five seconds out of my day and they really appreciate it. I picked Wednesdays because they're SO blah.. hehe Some of the other RNs I work with call me "Nature Girl" because I can't stand to kill even a fly....if a bug or lizard gets in the ER...sheesh I have to chase it out....randomly kind.
My husband changes tires or lets people use our cell phone...he's a traffic "kindness" person...he even picks up hitchhikers - which I'm trying to break him of ...because ..well you know why....but we try to help people when we can.....
I admit it I have selfish reasons to help people, I just cannot stand by and watch people doomed to their lack of attention.. it is not just because I think of their safety (they are soon to get their Darwin Award) it is the people I care for that are around them, if I help a person I will increase the odds of my friends (tribe).
some could use a little, I did this for you, so now you know how to do it for others. The fable comes to mind,Give a man a fish.. Teach a man to fish.. see some where down the line he will teach another to fish, but is it altruistic? Well actually if a charitable person feels like a cause is extending their dependency, it is time to cast that cause out, by teaching the cause to fish, it is not a "cold shoulder" which , you may find has an interesting origin.
Yes I practise this, and believe for every action is a reaction. Good action good reaction. Bad action bad reaction . Karma is just life keeping you in check. As far as what I do. They have to be spontaious ramdom good acts. maybe even something you don't want to really do but you do it anyway.
Yes I practice this. I believe that Karma is a bitch, she will come back to bite you in the ass if you don't pay her close attention. I try to give a smile to those I think could use it, a word of encouragement, a shoulder to cry on or a little note of gratitude. I tell my family members how much I appreciate and love them. The smallest things matter the most.
I always practice kindness towards others, unless they act like jerks. I think being a pleasant or nice person is the right thing to do. People respond to the way they are treated. I work closely with the public, so I find that even if I am not really happy, I can be kind and nice, and it makes the day go by so much better. I really don't expect anything in return, but acts of kindness towards others tends to draw positive energy.
