As usual, i was thinking about new things to post in the forum, and this is the newest thought I had.
A lot of people talk about their family being on VR. I know I have certainly made some very special friends. But I wonder, how many people consider VR to be their social outlet? I would rather sit in front of my computer at night talking to people than watch TV. Is that wrong?
Secondly, is this the only social outlet for some people? I have my life in "the outside world", I wonder if this is the only social interaction for some people...
I would imagine all of us have an outside world. Be it a job, family, friends, and/or pets. Many people I have talked to on here also have other web based networking sites as a means to communicate with others both locally or afar. Naturally, I am an addict to VR and I probably spend too much time on VR and too little time at the gym. But I love the people here and the knowledge one can gain by talking with other people who are fascinated with the paranormal and the occult. It is a social outlet for me, but of course not the only one.
Well yes i would also agree that i do have an awesome VR family here, the ones that am especailly close to I talk to on here and off here, some actually live pretty close by. Ya I agree I am probably on here alot more then i should be, but whose counting lol
I have to admit, since i started college online, i have been spending loads of time online, lets see, on this site alone i've spent 46.35 hours. But i still go out on the weekends and drink and party and have a good time so, for me, my main socialife is onine, but i have a dayside life.
I am here way too much as well. I just wonder if it's posible to be on here too much? Like an unhealthy amount...
Possible that this is the only site that some like more than others? I also have myspace & a few other places i frequent, but not as much as VR recently.
I came on this site because of my cousin Xzavier & i have been a "fan" since. I also use yahoo & windows messenger as well. Outside of coming on this site i also have a crappy job, go to school part time & in the process of packing my stuff to move back home.
I also like it here because i get the chance to meet some interesting people & all their personalities.
Recently with packing my things i admit that i am on here WAY TO MUCH lol
sadly this is my only contact with ppl other than work, and study and my son! i have been single for 2 years now but i find it hard to get out, my family dont wish to know me? bad girl lol and friends eh!
Its sad and its lonely at times but then it can have its good points.
Vr isnt like the other sites there isnt beef and drama so i feel at home here, most ppl are welcoming and nice.
i get to be me here, its cool.
I wouldn't say VR consumes my life or is my only form of social activity... I like going out with friends sometimes and other times I like to stay home, relax, and hop on VR.... both are very enjoyable for me.
With any addiction, the signs are basically the same. The big question is if it causing harm to other and necessary parts of your life. Like, say, you don't go to work because you would rather [blank]. Maybe we should create a 12 step coven on VR for those suffering from VR addiction! HA!
Oh but that coven would be full in a heart beat. Sooo many addicts here!
Sevenn, that is a brilliant idea! How to know if you're addicted to VR and how to treat it! I wish I was a sire, I would create that coven! LOL
I love VR, I am always on! And most of the time I would rather talk to people here than some of my "real life" friends. They have too much drama.

VR is a nice escape for me... I've met some really cool people here (you included).
But my social life is not on VR... it is usually outside the walls of my office.
However, there are people from VR now included in that social life... much to my benefit.
Yeah Birra, there's no Pabst on Vr... Electronic beer, it could be in the coven for addicts!
So, we all spend way too much time on VR now? Is that what we're getting at? Why?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Well.. because C-Man made it so...
...time spent is 50% of your status... that little counter over there lets you keep track of how much... is... too much. Or something...
I have my online family and then I have my real family. I spend more time here then in the 'real world' because I get nervous in crowds. So here I feel safe. It's more of I don't like people looking at me in a way that I feel like I'm being staired down. Here I don't have to see the looks people are giving me.
Oh, so Cancer knows who is the addict and who is not! I see how it is... LOL
I think maybe a lot of people feel safer online. For the exact reasons mentioned too. And it's so much more convient. Why drive out to a bar or what have you when you can sit on your ass in front of a computer? I am a fan of the whole sitting on my ass thing.
it's a convenient diversion - I have plenty of RL friends, I have plenty on the net too
I still think online friends are better, if they piss you off you can block them! I have never blocked anyone in my life mind you...
Why do we like our internet friends just as much the other friends? I mean, it seems odd considering that most of these people we have never even met in person before...
Golly - I've got so many social outlets at this point I lose count. I have a lot of people I enjoy talking to on this forum... but it is far from "my social life".
Well Stormwind, perhaps you should be the inspirartional for the coven of the addicted? LOL
*lol* Coven of the addicted? Me? Only to caffeine... ;-)
As others have said - this is one outlet... I have many friends in real life, many friends at my work, many friends in the SCA... and there's even some overlap between one or more of those...
I actually have met a few people on VR in person...
I have met people on VrR in person too. However, one of my closest friends is in Wales. Never met him face to face. And I would rather talk to him than a lot of other people. Is that weird?
Well the coven of the addicted is for those who are addicted to VR. So you would be perfect. Move people from one addiction to another!
And I'm sorry, I meant inspirational speaker. LOL
lol, it would be funny if someone started that "coven of the addicted" and had the crest be someone setting in front of a comp with a bottle of beer hahahahs
Actually I'm far from addicted to VR... I'm rarely on these days... *shrug* I hadn't even updated my profile in... errr.. ummm.. *counts* a year? 18 months? 2 years?
Oh no, I think there is a picture of that with me being the person...
Well, I will be the first to go. Hi, I'm Lyssa. I have been addicted to VR for 3 years now....
BUT WHY IS IT LIKE THIS?
OHHHHHHH... I getcha...
I remember a time in my life when I spend a lot more time on the internet... 1988-93-ish... period of transition in my life. Went to college in '88, graduated in '92, went to grad school... finally started getting "settled" in what I was doing and where I wanted to go in '93. I think people in a "transition" phase in their life tend to find the computer a good outlet to hook up and "talk" for lack of a better term...
Hmmm, that is an interesting thought. I could go with that.
Another possibility too is that the goth lifestyle is by no means mainstream. I mean how many people here have been denied jobs because of something "indecent" in their appearance. I don't know any true gothic people where I live (granted I did just move). many we just feel the need to stick together any way possible?
well i have a family here on vr
they are my family cause
my one in the "outside world" isnt the best
but i still have my friends n family here too
its hard not to
Welcome Skylar... LOL
Why are we addicted? What is it that makes this site and it's people so much cooler than than the real world of people?
Well, that answer is a easy one lol.....
The Prince Cancer made it that way, its designed to where if we want to level up, we will have to spend time on here, its a brilliant idea actually, i am very surprised that other sites haven't picked it up yet lol
My name is Alex and I am a VR addict... I have a minor social life outside of work and VR but its minor but have to admit most of my friends are on VR... I have met more amazing people here than I have elsewhere in life and am constantly meeting more extraordinary people who I am sure will further change my life.
But I am one of those who even if its for 2 seconds before I go to work I pop on really quick to get my fix...and then as soon as I get home my laptop is on and so is VR. (sometimes i even take my laptop to work...big no no but thank god for hour lunches)
i am the same way
but id have to say its the
people that make it worth while
otherwise i wouldnt get on at all
i love the set up of this site
it makes it so easy to talk to new people
n most peopleon here are really friendly
Well, I'm sure there would be no shortage of members for you.
I think we are off topic though. LOL
So we all feel socially accepted here right?
Is the gothic community really that turned off by the outside world? If that is a fair statement to make...
I would and wouldn't say that....
We are in instance that we are USUALLY in our own place online or whatever, and not out being all happy go lucky dogooders.
I wouldn't say that because we have established that a good percentage pf us has work and school and etc etc.
So like i said, in a way yes and in a way no
I spend a lot of time on the internet doing graphic/web design and online gaming, so I normally have VR on in the background, occasionally hitting F5 to see if I've any messages or if there's any new journal entries. But I wouldn't say I'm addicted to a virtual social life; I'm kind of a recluse both on and offline :-D
You know it seems as if for me VR has become my main social outlet. Yes I do have friends outside of the net and vr but honestly I think I like the ones here better lol. However I know where to draw the line and don't let this interfere with day to day "normal" activities.
As far as family, yes, I consider many of my friends and my coven members as family. I have bonded with so many here that I couldn't call them anything else.
no but i wold love to meat uthe vamps arond here but sady ther are none that will mack ther sealf known if ther are any in south carlina
Yes, I would say this site is my main social outlet.
The best thing is nobody minds if I just come and go, no pressure to make excuses as to why I don't want to be here etc.....this does'nt happen on sites with a much smaller membership.
I suppose why many people spend so much time on here is mainly because of the subject at hand. I doubt you would ever talk openly to your real family and friends about this kind of stuff. Also, i consider this site a very private place, away from the outside world. Why not indulge in it?
I'm on here or myspace alot... or playing video games. I know... I'm a big nerd but that's where my biggest friends are I suppose.
Well to me. VR is like my second home.
I have ALOT of problems in my life.......and I come here to get away. Imberse myself in deep intellectual conversations or just random talk.
I feel closer to people on here than I do with people in my "outside life". That might sound pathetic. But I don't care. Think what you will.
lol :)
hmm
interesting thoughts
i would consider this a social outlet for me
i am very unsocial as a rule, and that actually applies here as well.
there are people i have talked to here, albeit briefly, that i do consider to be friendly-types and that's as much as i can say for most people i come in contact with anywhere else.
i enjoy the content of other minds (some of them at least) and reading the forums or journals can be a form of contact with out worrying about all the social courtesies that play upon my anxieties.
It totally is some peoples one and only social outlet, but it is healthier then doing nothing at all. That is why i think vr is a shining beacon of light to oucasts from society like our selves to be able to chat and relate to people all over the world is kind of special i think.
i think a lot of people use this as like.. their way to talk to everyone. i dont think that wanting to not watch tv is bad. i do the same thingg.
I have two real life people that are a part of VR.
It's entertainment.
I like it.
I'd rather be drawing or reading...
My real life is different.
I personally have alot of fun outside of VR but I have found alot of friends here too! It's not that I don't have friends outside of VR, there are plenty, but having friends online is fun too. it gives it a little more life.
Rancidmeat, I don't think I have been quite outcasted yet. LOL
Myspace is like Rome, spreading itself too thin. It isn't a community. Not like we have here at least!
How many people think this is like an addiction for them?
I wonder how many of you would actually choose these members of VR to be in your real family or even have them as real life friends.
Wow, good question!!! Hmmm, there are certainly quite a few I wish I could see everyday in real life. Definitely not everyone I talk to, but a few. The ones that I connect with the best, or really care about.
oh and to answer a question lyssa asked earlier
i'm not sure i would say the Rave is an addiction for me, but a habit for sure.
i visit here nearly everyday off and on and enjoy myself immensely
it's definitely somewhere i can go to relax, be uplifted or have a good laugh depending on what i want... and that makes it worth coming back to ;]
i admit i am on here a lot , i make friends, and found new friends
I've asked myself some of the same questions re. addiction. I have good friends in the "real" world, some of whom I don't get to see that often, but with whom I can start a conversation about virtually anything. They've known me a long time, and they know about VR. Other friends, I would label as "activity" friends, we drink and dine, discuss books and kids. Some of them know about Vr and they think I'm mad. For them, I'm entertainment. Unless I reel in my personality, as I had to do in my professional life for many years. Still have to on occasion, but I try to avoid those situations and those people as much as possible.
Stormwind made a good point about transitions. I've worked alone for many years now, did a lot of internet research, and never felt inclined to join any social networking groups. I was in the midst of a transition when I popped into VR to check out the "resources." I think being in transition made me more open to the social aspect, but did not incline me toward addiction.
I've only met one person from VR and I thought long and hard about it before I did. She and I are friends and I hope we always will remain so.
In some ways, online relationships are more precarious, I think. Your words stand alone. There are no facial or body clues to interpret.
VR is a add on for me. A place to talk & hide if I please. Making friends all over is a great thing. I''l go out with my old friends, but sometimes I just want to be here with ya all.
i come on here everyday and ive made some very good friends and some special ones !!! i dont see my local friends much as they are mostly married and have lives of their own! so i come on here all the time so i would say it was my main social outlet!!!
It's defintely not my main social outlet but I would muc rather be on here talking rather than watchng TV most nights and I have made some good friends and met one uber special boi here :)
YOu know, I have certain people on here that i wouldn't mind keeping up with, and meeting every once in a while, but i definatly would want to know what i am getting myself into like their age, gender, what are they REALLY like you know that kind of stufff. I wouldn't just jump into meeting someone
I would actually like to met a few of the people that have a laundry list of claims to abilities, I doubt any of them would follow through with their claims but I would be interested in finding out what they really have as far as social skills. Some people try alot harder to impress people on line, when there is a less likely chance of actually meeting them. I think everybody has something interesting about them, that doesn't need all the pretense.
Well, I have found since I have been on VR
I have made alot of new friends and yes it can be addictive(in a good way) I can be myself more here and I am learning alot.. I still have a social life off of the computer. but i find myself more and more on here everyday:)
I have college work and therefore campus life in general to contend with, and i've been sick a lot lately too, so I've actually probably spent LESS time on VR then I should...every time I get on I find myself distracted by something else and am only for a few minutes...
I am hooked on here some times Iam on here til 4 am without relizing how long Ive been up
I know that all to well....
I jumped on the other day around 12ish & was on until 3 am. Where does the time go to? Makes me feel like i have no life at all lol
lol we haves lives
just on vr **giggles**
i feel comfteralbe to talk to people here
I am a VR addict and need the twelve step program as I spend most of my waking time online. It is my escape from work and reality. I have many more friends on VR than in real life. Yes, it is sad.
its not sad
its just easier for some people
to socialize on here :]]
i know it is for me
I agree... Its not sad, I find it easier to socialize on here than go out and socialize.... its a nice release from stress and such.... The great thing about VR is if you are getting stressed about something on here you can just turn it off.... Which you cant do at work and such.
I only know about 2 people from VR in person.
I am so addicted to this site to be honest.
I think I have made some of the coolest and awesome people on here.I have made some really close friends on this site and it's became a daily thing where I talk to them in the morning before I go to work and after I get home from work as well. This place is my social outlet since I have really no friends where I live.I'm more of an outcast when it comes to the outside world.I do have a job,but I look too coming onto VR after work everyday to talk to my friends.I do believe I have a VR Family on here as well though. This site is like a home to me.
Yeah, I always talk to the people here. Everyday! Seriously, everyday!
I dont see that as wrong, as long as you are having some kind of outside interaction with other people. But if you are just sitting on VR all day and night then yes, that could be a problem.
I could go with that one.
I just prefer VR people to other people. LOL
Yes, Internet socializing is much much easier.
For one, you don't have people judging for the way you look or the kind of clothes you wear. Secondly, you don't have all the drugs and alchohol going around and such. I mean, you do, but its not that your sitting with a group of so-called friends and they are saying "If you don't do this, your a bbeeeeep" ya know?
Too true. AND, if you don't want to deal with someone, you don't have to!
It is simply a social outlet. I enjoy the time, friends and ideas that are shared on the vr. Many of the ideas are not easily discussed in person.
That is. So do you think in like... 5 years everyone will have the online friends all over the world? And like them more too?
lol i don't really know, in five years, they could have cyber clubs were people could put on goggles and go have fun lol
Nothing can replace the physical side of friendship, not even the net...
i think for some it mighbe their only social outlet, there are many who might be shut ins due to physical problems.
Is this wrong you asked, i don't believe so as it does give those people and others of us a place to be with ones we want to communicate with or feel we can communicate with.
Yes there are other things to do outside VR and i do not spend every waking moment here but it is a nice place to be with some nice people and others you might not really think too much of just like you might come across in every part of life.
I am sure everyone knows where to draw the line of too much time being spent in whatever they are taking part in whether it be here on VR or some form of entertainment in the outside world.
At least here you do have a way to interact with others whereas you don't with alot of the video games that are played.
I have nothing against video games and i know many enjoy them just saying for the most part there is interaction with many people from all walks of life here at VR and that can be a good thing.
I think it is very easy to get too involved in the VR village we are all a part of here, but when we start cutting ourselves off from "real" life, and the people who surround us everyday, and start running to the Internet to get what we are lacking in the "real" world, that is a sad thing.
My two lives are different. VR is a good escape from all the drama and bullshit around me. I have made some great people here, and it is good just to sit and relax and talk with them.
For me most of my real life friends are also my VR friends. I haven't had much of a social life since my car accident a year and a half ago. Before that I was driving over the road so very little face to face socializing there. My socializing on VR went down a lot when I started my own coven. Since my coven is pretty stable now that it's been going a while I have been able to have more time now to chat and post in the VR forums. I have noticed lately that from spending less time with people face to face I don't deal well sometimes with crowded places now.
I agree totally with Beltrand's statement. And Wolfie - join the club. I never did like to be surrounded by hordes of humanity! LOL!
Iactually know a few people on here who's only friends are online...to me that is a little sad yes. I love VR but I do a lot off of my computer. I have many friends, I go to school I babysit. ETC
Ya, VR's cool n all but i have to have my weekend socials lol or i'll go crazy!
Yeah. You can't drink online. You can't scream online. You can't do a lot of things. I miss my other things I do when I'm on here too long.
Yep and besides, sit for too long and the ass starts hurting lmao
i admit i am on this and a few other sites alot so i am a bit addicted, but i too have friends and a life off of here
for me this isn't the only social site i'm on but this one is different from the others as it is the only vampire related one. The others are all general sites like facebook
Hey everyone ... well in my case .. Just got out of a sticky as hell relationship with my ex fiancee and lost a number of friends because of it ..
But I will say that my sister told me to join VR and haven't looked back since. Met some really good people ... one guy who I'd love to jump on a plane and visit one day ;) I'm at college but still get on here everyday ... at some time or capacity ...
LOVE YOU ALL!!!
Well, during the week I work long hours so getting online is the only practical thing to do, not to mention I suffer from VR addiction too! =) Social life is usually reserved for the weekend, dinner with the folks, friends, and so on.
NEW QUESTION!!! Are you on VR more during the weekends or weekdays? And of of course why.
I am on after work every night usually. So more during the week. I do other stuff on weekends. Things that requireputting on clothes and taking a shower. LOL
Welcome Chiyo! However, you didn't answer the questions. You have to do that before we can treat you. LOL
i'm on week days mostly
i have a random job so i have time during the day
i'm not on evenings and weekends much
to me vr is my social outlet my social life outside of VR is fine but i am not really allowed to be who i really am inside i can't express myself because of my parents and here on VR i can be who i really am be me other than having to surpress it infront of my parents
i know thats stupid but i mean i only spend this small amount of time with my parents until im off in the world on my own and i don't want to spend it argueing because i not im too dark too evil inside so i put on a mask hide it and when im here is the only time i can take it off
and i consider a lot of people on here my other family
and yess i would rather be on here than infront of a tv
I borrowed Two peoples Identity to get on-line to visit the Rave. Nuff' Said?
LadyLyssa said: "Yeah. You can't drink online. You can't scream online."
You can't? what's stopping you? Not only can you do both of those but unlike at a bar you can do it naked if that trips your trigger. Online is cheaper too no cover charge and you don't have to spend $30 for gas. You can stop at your favorite liquor store on your way home from work and buy a whole bottle of liquor for the cost of 2-3 drinks at a bar. Another advantage if some jerk is bugging you you can block them. try that at a bar. Maybe we should have a contest to see who can come up with the best top ten list why VR is better than a bar?

VR had become a social life for me i know a lot of people are great friends here to me and i consider some of them to be family. So yes i call it my gothic myspace in a way lol. i Just enjoy the site all in general and i enjoy the people. But do your other view yes i think this is all it is for some people lol. I mean there is a lot of people that have no lives and just talk to people on the internet and create or imitate real life through people on the internet. They have notihng better to do and no friends. Which to me i feel bad for them but some people yes this is their circle of friends.
