Emily Rose: How many of you believe what happened to her really happened? She was possessed by demon and Queen of demons Satan The priest performed an exorcism on her. Did that exorcism really help or did it really kill her? Or was it the medication the doctor had her on for epilepsy

That's an age old question.

Have people in the past suffered from possession or were they simply victims of mental illnesses?

My post may be deleted because I can only come and say that I honestly do not know what to believe. On one hand, I feel that she and others like her just had some sort of illness and needed medication. Perhaps her religious beliefs influenced her to feel like the medication she was taking would not make her feel better.

If you truly believe something is happening to you, can it happen? did she stop taking her medication because she felt she had demons attacking her and the medication made it easier for them to attack? Could you really trust that belief when it comes down to her life being on the line?

I don't know, I'm more inclined to believe that she felt that her problems were something science and medication could not fix and in refusing medication and proper treatment, she sealed her own fate.

The whole idea is brought up once again (rehashed) by a pending movie. Any breaks in the case are discarded for sensational material to build a thriller. The whole case shares hall marks with the Tina Resch Case, both very convincing girls, out to rile the people around them. To limit it all to one or two factors, she was possessed, or she was mentally ill, how have we devolved to be so narrow in our "investigations". What about acting? She could well have been playing a role, that quickly absorbed her, feed (like most "possessions") by the people such 'events" attract. Like the person that spazes out at a Ouija board sitting, their are people that have to be the center of attention.

SuicidalxxSkittle, would it be possible for you to tell us why you don't believe it?

I, for one, don't know what to believe. I do think that if you believe in something enough that it becomes real... A lot of illnesses people have are actually created by the mind. It's been proven. Like the men that want to know what it's like to have children... There have been cases where women actually get big and look pregnant while having all the cravings and mood swings and then start having contractions while the whole time, there is no baby in there. The women just really wanted it so the body "made it happen".

I think that if Emily Rose really thought she was possessed then she might have exihibited the behavior that she thought might go along with it. And if she really was possessed then all I can say is "wow, poor girl".

Dabbler has a point. If you go by the movie alone, you are getting a very biased account of what happened. They wanted to create a movie about faith and mysterious events.

If you watch it, even though they try to depict the prosecutor as a bully, you should be able to see how they did have a valid point and reason to throw people in jail.

Personally I think if this character had been a minor, a LOT of people would have been thrown in prison.

When you have one persons "plot"/"performance" create a window of oppurtunity to the "permormance"/plot of another group then you have a garden atmosphere for an escalation in the performance, a former "low budget act" turned stage production.. the people that "volunteered" for the "exocism" they had plenty to gain, gain that is now paying off once again. The girl, well her Actions are sort of vouched for in the process as well, or so she may hope, I know a few young ladies who could convince you they where possessed, one does so for entertainment (side show style) Rose had the coaching of others emerged in what she only "half assed studied". so all in all I would say a damn convincing performance enhanced by epelepsis, and big media coverage.

I personally think anything dealing with exorcisms are iffy.not that i wont believe in them, but in the aspect that look at where majority of these things proclaim to happen, a part of me with no ill intent or disrespect fills its a stunt that they do simply to be noticed with in their religious faction.

lestatsbride, first off can I ask you to explain the part of your post "... Queen of demons Satan"

Emily Rose never existed

The film was based on the exorcism of Anneliese Michel was definitely exorcised after experiencing convulsions around the age of 17, then hallucinations, then hearing voices, avoiding a statue of Christ and refusing to drink Holy water, that much is matter of record. She also barked like a dog, urinated over everything, ate coal and spiders etc

She was exorcised 67 times over 10 months by Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt, the last one was on June 30, 1976 she died a little later of dehydration, malnourishment and pneumonia. A bunch of people were prosecuted for what happened to her

Not quite like the film eh

Best account I could find

Shinx

No, the name change was because Anneliese Michel's parents wouldn't give permission for her ordeal to be made into a film

The books are well documented, not long ago you could search the Vatican's website and find their record of the exorcism (no details though). The court record of the trial is also available if your German is up to it.

I've read a little about and seen the two films of what happened to the young lady in question and the answer is still unclear, though I am tempted to say that she need her parents to take good care of her. By taking Michaela to the doctors when she was having such terrible grand malls would have helped to rule out the lassy being scizophenic or whether what was happening to her was a genuine possession, though possession in it's self is hard to diagnose.

Maybe if had been the 90's and not the 70's when all this was happening to Michaela the technology of medicine today might have been able to save either by ruling out schizophrenia or by diagnosing it to be sadly the case.

Let us all hope that her soul can now rest in peace.

The movie was meant to generate discussion on exorcisms and their validities and especially in the case of Emily Rose.

However, when there are medical aspects tossed into the mix? One would have to think that they have more to do with anything than demons.

I find it very interesting that no one documents the incidents leading up to the exorcism or the effects afterwards unless something goes horribly wrong. It almost is like a justification for killing or maiming someone. Most times, this is some child or teenager, still living with parents who are at their wits' ends.

Was it real or not? Most times a person is feeling so guilty over something(s) it causes a extreme mental state. If you are possessed it can not be you fault. The old devil made me do it. The brain covers your accounts of the guilt & instead you see/feel the demon. The demon is your own inner self.
To be possessed is considered a rare thing even by most "experts" in the world.

I actually enjoyed the movie, and afterwards went as much as I could about the real story...
granted, this was some time ago so I don't fully remember the whole true story, BUT, I do believe that it was partially the medication that did her in, and partially the exorcism, as well as the fact that her own mind may have been being destroyed by her own thoughts and stress and fears...

I might not be making any sense, I apologize...

The links to this information are above, but i figure not many people are actually reading the thread anyhow ...

It wasn't the meds. She was suspected of suffering epileptic fits just before she started the more odd behaviour - the meds were then changed and then stopped altogether - stopping the meds was one of the things that added to the neglect charges against those involved.

As dabbler is saying, I personally think that the poor girl started out with a clear mental problem but then the drama of the exorcisms simply added to the problem, forcing her into a line of thought which was sort of : they are exorcising me, so I must be possessed

LordZacharias0580 please cite your sources.

The references that I provided above show that no doctor was called even when her convulsions became worse.

There were two priests present for the 67 exorcisms and both were prosecuted, along with the parents, for neglect.

The exorcism used the "Rituale Romanum" meant that no other person could be present during the exorcism (the theory was the demon would inhabit the nearest non-religious being when forced out)

It strikes me as horrific that the option of having her committed was shunned, yet the exorcism was accepted without hesitation. A telling outcome from those ho wanted to "shine" as "saviors" to a possessed girl.

This case is not the only case of a death resulting from beliefs in super natural forces. It should be noted that it is not limited to religion either, self proclaimed Alternative Phyco therapist claiming to quell the most behaviorally impulsive child, have led parents to smother their children in "Re-birthing" sessions, one case made it on to Law and Order.

The hopelessness, back before medical break through, left families prone to the interpitations readily offered by those who are attracted to such things.

Look at Oregon in the 60s through the mid 80s, and you will see a manic outbreak of "Tough Love Recovery Camps". Radical "theraphy" methods used to 'drive out outrageous behavior". Nothing is more diserning then a child that is not normal, and the stigma is a real cramp for socially aimed parents. So were such measures used for the sake of the child, or for the "relief" of the parents.

dabbler, yes it seems that the girl herself didn't want to be committed and force fed - and everyone accepted this - but when a relative suggested an exorcism everyone thought this was a good idea.

I didn't think people who needed to be committed actually had much to say on the matter.

A reform was in motion at the time of her review, a reform to mental instituites, and the power of commment was being over hauled sadly the abuses in a number of Practices burdened the ones that where making break throughs, but with billing being a deciding factor.. the ones that could have done something could well have been out of reach.

From what I recall about the very little I seen of the movie was that she had refused to eat and drink which caused her dehydration and malnourishment. However, as a parent I would be taking my child regardless of her age to a doctor as I would want my child's physical health to be well in order to get the mental health balanced.

Was she truly possessed? Only she would be able to answer that question and she is not around to answer that.

That it did and alot about their religion also played a factor and then it was very accepted to go to the church for answers and what was accepted by the church more so then the medical profession. There are still faiths today that do not believe in the medical profession and feels that their faith is what heals.

Yes and they should be hesitant in cases such as this and not rule out medical conditions or let someone's health deteriorate because their faith is telling them one thing and it could be a medical condition instead. I think they should pay more attention to common sense in cases such as this to prevent something like this from occuring again. I do feel that someone involved should be held responsible for their actions or lack thereof.

Exactly Dab! I feel it was justified in convicting the priest and the parents with neglect because of the fact that they relied on faith to heal her when in fact that is probably what killed her. They allowed faith to overcome common sense of seeking medical help.

I don't believe in possession, really. I have read in other places that it's not possible unless you allow it to happen. And for something to stay in you long term....I just don't know about that. Now some people, I think, could subconsciencely bring it on themselves by wanting spirits to come overtake them or whatever, but they can't just take over your body. That's what Sylvia Browne says anyway. Religious finatics would differ on that theory. Course, Sylvia is into God too.

Even If I was a believer, I wouldn't care less what Sylvia Brown thinks, her credibility was lost about 5 years ago. She has changed her opinion of every topic she has expounded on. She once told people that they where possessed, then started saying, you have a spirit " attached to you". to their is a spirit blocking communication around you, I was in the Spiritualist church when the "orders" came to stop mentioning, or even alluding to possession.

Perhaps if the element of the supernatural in this case was not involved there would remain only the somatic and psychological elements. There were symptoms of a seizure disorder for which she was taking medication, and there were symptoms of a psychiatric disorder.
That the cause of death was malnutrition, dehydration, and pneumonia clearly indicates a lack of attention by everyone involved with this poor woman.
What is most tragic is that drama and hysterics became dominant in an attempt to cure the young woman of treatable conditions.

Sadly the Tina Resch Case has the same Hall Marks, and sadly that case unfolded in a way that cost the life of an infant. Whether or not she was responsible for the toddlers death is lost in the Pathology, re-enforced by the supporting hype that prevailed from "paranormal" interests.

My question is, there are, apparently, certain types of people that are perfect for demonic possession. Something about them makes them easier to be manipulated... But what is so special about the priest that does the exorcism? Why is it that just about any priest is able to perform one. A lot of people have told me that we're all children of God and that's why but if that's the case, then anyone that practices the faith like they should would be able to do it, right? Others have told me that people are easily possessed because we all have sin in our hearts.. if that's true too, then why aren't we all climbing walls and speaking in tongues?

Because some are not desperate to be considered possessed to suppress responsibility for lack of impulse control.. when ones behavior peeks, how convent it is to just act possessed, especially when the church obliges the performance, and even coaches the "possessed person".

When a person is scolded for their behavior impulsive, and brash. They run out of excuses.. the last effort is to go to the library, or into religious text, and find a "divine" excuse, possession, a catch all the Devil made Me Do It. Starts off innocent enough, but when it gets too out of hand.. well current case in point..

Oh! Okay, got it. That covers the "possessed"... But what about the priests doing the exorcism? What makes them more special than the other "children of God". I know plenty more people that practice their religion and know more than quite a few priests that I've met yet they are "unqualified" for the task... Any explanations on that one? ^_^

Some priest know the performance/showmanship behind exorsisms(I might add that the church abandoned the practice, and then re-instated it a few times) The priest that does a "good exorsism should know how to be a ventiliquist, and now how to use the power of suggestion, or subconcious cues. The whole concept has put the church under strain, only those priest who are willing to take the fall-out (again the presented case in point) . Jeisuit Priest I understand are the usual priest that handle Exorsisms.

Source:http://skepdic.com/exorcism.html

An exorcism is a religious rite for driving Satan or evil spirits out of a possessed person, place, or thing. In ancient times, many cultures had such rites. Today, the Roman Catholic Church still believes in diabolic possession and its priests still practice what is called "real exorcism," a 27-page ritual to drive out evil spirits. The ritual involves the use of holy water, incantations, various prayers, incense, relics, and Christian symbols such as the cross. The Catholic Church has at least ten official exorcists in America today (Cuneo). The Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry Sebastian D'Souza, says he ordered a priest to perform an exorcism on Mother Teresa shortly before she died in 1997 because he thought she was being attacked by the devil.

The Catholic Church in Germany, however, made the exorcism ritual very difficult to obtain after the 1973 death of exorcism victim Anneliese Michel, a 23-year-old who had her first psychiatric episode at the age of 16. She apparently suffered from depression, epileptic seizures, and various hallucinations. Her zealous Catholic family believed she was possessed by Satan and recruited two priests who performed the exorcism ritual 67 times on the mentally ill woman. At the time of her death Anneliese weighed about 69 pounds (31kg). The priests and her parents received only suspended jail sentences, but the Church began requiring priests to obtain permits to perform exorcisms, and the permits are not easy to get. German Catholics now go to Switzerland and Poland for their exorcisms.* The 2005 film The Exorcism of Emily Rose is said to be based on the life of Anneliese Michel,* as is the 2006 German film Requiem.

Artemka: I was mistaken. I believed I read that there was a doctor present- my mistake. I read over the source I had and it stated that there was no physician present during the exorcism itself.

I personaly believe that mental health issues and possesion can be directly linked. there is a story here in Liverpool, England, about a man who was a paranoid schizophrenic, who's condition was down to him being possesed by spirits of people who had commited suicide, and when a nice spirit came through, and he completed a task, the spirit left and 'closed the door behind him' so to speak and cured this guys mental illness.

As for Emily rose, i 'm not really sure what happend, so can't really comment on that

In favor of possession of a victim using the craft to cause said victim to demonstrate personality changes.
I.e. lazy or greedy as examples, iv never seen anyone take on demonic possession … and still doubt anything like the films has ever happened. Im a believer it has more to do with needy people getting attention as they feel they need and then it all goes Pete tong

In the case of Annaliese Michel (the real Emily Rose) there are photos and audio available for those who believe this is just a hoax. Try to understand though, the audio is in German and not English. When 'Emily Rose' was written for the screen, they changed the location and time period it had happened in.

I believe.... as there are other example movies of "possession", including of ordained priests.... as for the use of "exorcism"... just as a person that does not believe in them being hypnotizeable.... and thus, can't be hypnotized unless they do it to themselves... exorcism only works with those that have been proselitized into believing in the process, IMHO..

Honestly, I don't believe in it. I think that the people going through it honestly believe that they're possessed, so they behave as though they are. (Sort of a mind over matter thing.) I don't believe in demons, therefore, I don't believe that possession is possible.

yes as Artemka said, Emily Rose is the movie. It was sad to watch. I also did a bit of looking up on the girl they based it on too. And I can tell ya......hearing some of the audio gave me the creeps.

I believe a person can become possessed. Even in the Bible they talk about possessions. I am slightly religious and I do believe in the Bible as far as it is translated correctly. Jesus was said to have driven demons out of people.

Some people are more sensitive to things like this and become easily possessed.

There is a story I heard of a missionary who had a broken leg. One day he and his companion were invited to a families church, and not being a jerk, agreed to go visit. While he was at said church they did a blessing on him and his leg healed.

Later though, he began to become a little odd and even started speaking in tongues. His own church had to perform an exorcism on him. It worked, but his leg broke right after he was cured.

I do believe you can become possessed. That is my own personal belief.

This is a hard question to answer. The actual truth is the person was Anneliese Michel who died from what was believed to be epilepsy. However there were a lot of strange things occuring at the time hence the movie was based on her life. If you do a google search on Emily Rose you will find out this fact.
we still do not know the full in and out of both epilepsy or conducting exorcisms. It is a known fact that the church tried covering up this event and in fact say they dont conduct exercisms at all. Epilepsy could of been a part of the events that happened with Emily but there are so many other things that dont add up. I know they tried to blame everything on epilepsy.
Myself I think it was both that caused her death in the end.

Just remember people, just because names and places were changed accordingly does not mean it was real...It is just a way to protect those who were involved from community exploitation, and or ridicule.

The vatican does do certain things to cover up its tracks on certain occasions yes, but so does the military for that matter. Does not mean it is real. Many factions need all the help they can get to either keep the respect they have earned, or the fear they have instilled upon the masses.

Just because the vatican performs an excorsism of any kind, does not mean they are in the right to say any individual is posessed. Since it is a matter of opinion, no matter how high up on the heirarchy of the vatican it goes. Would you believe the pope if he stated to the world..."Ladies and Gentleman, I hereby designate Wednesday is the true most holy of holy days, not Sunday" I think not.

That being said, believe what you are witness to, and not what society manipulates your mind into believing.

If it were real, then certain factions have alot of explaining to do...But are rather lazy in acknowledgment for the sake of paperwork and the mess thereof.

I will say that I believe it. Maybe not necessarily for this particular movie.
My father has told of stories of exorcism since his brother was a priest of something down in mexico long ago. He was quite frightened by what he saw and refused for us to go to church or have associations with the church because of those experiences and things that he saw.
He went on to say that it was not because he didn't believe in God but because he couldn't believe God would let things like that happen.
Then he went off to Vietnam.

He still has a problem with church.

Take not, the original book "The Exorcist" is in fact based on a true story. And the story it is based from was actually the demonic possession of a little boy. ;) I don't know though, as for how she died, whom can say?

The answer to this question should be pretty simple. If there was genuine evidence that she was possessed, would there even BE a controversy? Shit, she had all the signs of epilepsy, refused proper treatment, and died as a result. It's pretty straightforward. If this (or whatever the REAL case was) had revealed any actual evidence that something paranormal was involved, don't you think there would have been just one SHRED of irrefutable evidence? Vomiting pea soup worked rather well in the Exorcist, don't you think SOMETHING physically impossible could or would have happened if there was a genuine demonic possession? I've heard a story (from a Catholic priest, and no, he didn't touch me. lol) about a girl who was supposedly possessed after she used a Ouija Board. She supposedly had frostbite beginning to form all over the left (or right, can't recall) side of her body. ACTUAL frost, not just coldness. Now, if this were real, don't you think there would have been some sort of scientific investigation? I think that would have been pretty damn big news! Bottom line is, possessions never stand up to scientific investigation. They're loaded with exaggerations, truly imaginative interpretations, and outright LIES. Were they genuine, don't you think they'd be taken seriously by science at this point? Shit, they supposedly happen all the time!

I dont think the movie gave the true story any justice. All movies and novels are out to make the producer/writer a buck and they will do anything to get it. I do believe that something happened but if you read the true facts (which is still 50/50) there are some good facts relating to both sides of the story. The only person who really knows is the poor girl herself.

I believe it, the meds actually made the possesion worse
see as the doc explained te meds cut off the part in her brain that blocks the possesion so she was fully aware of what was happening to her. most people who are possesed don't know they are because there is a chemical in the brain that blocks this. the meds deadened the chemical making her aware which in my opinion is worse. she died of starvation and the wounds inflited by the demon.

So how do you like scaring people that are simply having seirures?

You do know that the way you present this a person may stop taking medication right?

Or a guy violently beats his wife, and struges and says I was possessed, so the defense just figures to let him go?

Yes but a person that has them may through reading such post consider their seirures to be possession, then they may reject medicine thinking it will make them more possesed.

You belive in possession, ok then what makes you "immune" to it?

What makes others prone to it, and how do you know for sure you never acted possessed( which tells me you actually belive possession to be nothing but an act)?
