NO this isnt your regular thread on steryoptypes. I just was pondering on stereotypes and how some of them are just not ludicrious but funny. for example all asian people are martial artists, All black people are well endowed etc. I want to hear your opinion and maybe some new ones you find funny.

not a big fan of ethnic stereotypes myself...
But my former housemate, who was a brilliant engineering student and was from mexico, used to make fun of mexican stereotypes all the time...mainly the idea that they were all sleepy migrant workers. He used to make cracks about how, from what he heard people say, he was starting to think he was adopted because he was an insomniac and couldnt even keep a houseplant alive

I've always thought that some of them are just plain funny not that i am for type casting someone without getting to know them because i don't fall under any category of any ethnic group that one may pin me with so yeah i just posted this thread to see what other things are out there

One of the ones I hate is the one stupid ignorant little boys think: If a "hot" girl wears short skirts she wants sex. I've heard kids say that and it just disgusts me. I mean, not like the girl who wears the short skirt is dressing appropiatly, but all because she wants attention doesn't mean she wants to be raped.

I dont really like ethnic stereotypes either... but I love the English stereotypes. Let me clear up a few home truths for you.

1) We do not sit around drinking tea and saying "Jolly good old chap" at every avaliable oppertunity.

2) We dont all obsess over cricket.

3) We dont all worship the queen (in fact, most people dont like her.)

4) We dont all speak l;ike the Queen either, like you see in silly films.

5) We dont wear socks in bed :-P

why must all plus-sized black women be loud, surrounded by children, doing housework, cooking, using incorrect english, braiding hair or doing any varaition of these activities?

*i was once told that i was useless because i couldn't braid hair

*i'm lazy, so i don't do very much housework

*i'm only loud when i have to be and i do speek correct english

*i cook out of necessity

*there's only one small child in my house

dear corazonmuerto,i dont think that that what u have ment re stereotypes,i think its just some "classifikation" or something typical to some races or nations,that asians do martial arts etc...i wrote it in my profile and i ll write it here again-everybody is special...and if smbd has a stereotype in his life then its just connected to an individual,not to whole group of people.

the really frightening thing about sterotypes is, often but not always, they are based in truth...for if they were not.. they would be easily dismissed. Think about it, if the majority of black people hated ribs and watermelon what would be the point of the typecasting? If the typical south american woman was a ballsy, opinionated, and dominant personality why would anyone make the subservient comments towards them. There must be some believablity in sterotypes for them to persist.

Some Irish/Northern Irish Stereotypes:

1) All Irish are alcoholics

2) In Ireland everyone drinks Guiness

3) In Ireland everyone owns a shalaly (I don't know if I've spelt that right. I've lived in Northern Ireland for 18 years, which, please note, is a separate country from the Republic of Ireland, and until three weeks ago I didn't have a clue what one was for. However I do think they are useful for hitting people with.)

4) In Ireland everyone dresses in green

5) There are leprechauns everywhere (I have yet to see a real one)

6) Everyone hates the Queen

7) Everyone owns a gun and if you come to Belfast you will get shot (the only guns most people have ever seen are those carries by the army/police and last I heard there was a lower (porportional) death rate than in New York

I could go on but I think that's enough for now

I don't think it's a good idea to stereotype anything. Most things aren't always going to be a certain way. There are almost always exceptions.

there is always an exception i just did this thread for fun just so people can drop some they know and everyone should know that by now that if we class people so much all of us will be alone because we all are unique.

I hate the stereotypes of werewolves. Like all we do is wait for a full moon then go out and eat people. I work very hard during the day to support a wife and kids. The whole homicidal rampage when there's a full moon thing is just one side of me.

In reference to Jewish people being stereotyped as rich and cheap, look to Hollywood for the answer to that. Hollywood is said to be run by cheap, rich Jews. And if its true in Hollywood, it must be true everywhere....:)

I hate ethnic stereotypes, or any stereotype really, though there is often some truth in them. I get scared when I get on the bus and see a female driver....and I am female!
