Hey.
I was wondering what exactly made someone a good VR member? is it the following of the rules? How they interact with other members? How much they rate and how often?

What you think?

full agreement... respect

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT DIFFERENT VIEWS WE MAY HAVE

if we treat one another in kind and let people be themselves, "vampire" or not... we are doing right

not buying into petty drama - i have had a few disagreements with folks on VR over this or that but have done my best to contact a few of them directly... made a few allies this way

NO BACKBITING!!! as in going to someone else to handle your dirty work - if you can't be straightforward with someone for better or for worse you probably are that damn sorry in real life

respect is the main word....

As long as they're good, and quiet, and don't make you want to push them in front of a car, I'd say they're good to go.

Bat I think you summed up up quit right,

We all have points and views here and should no matter what show respect to those even if we do not agree with things.

Drama becomes quit old and yet we try to respect those, it just gets old.

Wax on Wax off...LOL

We as a community must have some respect for those here, like in society we will have our norms and outcasts, yet they still make this society happen. Giving us debate or some enlightment ot others beliefs in their lifes. we all are important.

Respect doesn't mean "no drama". If someone "Respects" someone, it doesn't mean they won't argue or try to start something with them.

i don't think "good and quiet" is necessarily a good thing. in the context that you should not judge others sure... but if a "good" VR citizen was one that just stood there quietly like a doe in front of headlights... i'd personally hope for more than folks here with zeal and the lack of fear to express themselves. we don't have to be docile agreeing quiet little cyborgs afraid to "rock the boat". everyone should be grown up enough to focus on the word that trep used in the first response to this thread

RESPECT

(need we go deeper?)
(i'm sure we will... soon - it'll be "but what is respect?" than it'll be "respect is only when other people think like me" and god knows what from there....)

i'm sure this post can splinter on a tangent and people can get all involved... i'm just going to webster's, and RESPECT anyone else's take... just seems like the logical thing to do

Hhhssssssssss......................

Positivity and venerating other souls with utmost true respect makes you true person of own. I do rate them total 10 and take part in this sport of rating, whenever they wish to talk, I talk with them respecting them most and they are real souls and not careless of your act. This is best communication according to my opinion.

Here much stuff available suh as database journals their art collection etc we can enjoy watching it.

Rating everyone a ten really doesn't make you a good VR citizen. It just makes a mockery of VR's rating system.

MBk you are right on the rating system, the rates is up to the individuals looking at the portfolios and than making a judgement of what they see. yet we have seen the drama as I call it of those who like causing turmoil.

By rating everyone a ten, you're not being fair to the person you rate. If you leave a ten for everyone, you're not telling them what improvement their profile or portfolio needs. It's just cheating them and VR.

mbk that's a great point on the rating system... i've wondered myself about another "fair" system that would give weight to ratings, per say. it is a truth that everybody on here seems to be a 9 or higher... if there are 10 numbers we should see a lot more distribution...

bat7777, people actually used to do ratings more fairly than they do now. This was back, however, before societies came into existence.

I remember seeing either a thread or journal entry by Cancer about how it changed once the Houses were brought into being.

This was probably a month after I joined that it happened.

Being fair in rating is using all the numbers. Not just one.

To be more specific, some societies themselves may be the cause for the unfairness of rating; or just because of societies as a whole.

Anyway, yes. If someone wants to consider themselves a good member of VR, they do need to be fair with the way they rate.

Really, what it all boils down to is respect. Period.

If you can't say anything nice about another person in an open forum, don't say anything at all.

As far as rating, to each his own. If they ask for help or an opinion, fine. Personally, I'd never tell someone else how their profile should be - it then wouldn't be 'their profile'.

Be yourself...and have some manners...LOL!

Respect doesn't really mean anything, Isis.

You can respect someone, but you can still insult them, hate them, flame them.

It takes a lot more than respect. The title lists something major itself.

"What Makes A Good VR Citizen?"

A person has to be good first and foremost to be a Good VR Citizen.

I disagree - repect means a LOT. If one doesn't treat one as one wants to be treated - with respect - why bother?
You don't have to agree with anyone to respect them.

Respect doesn't necessarily mean to "treat nicely".

I think the most popular definition is "held in high regard".

Even if you respect someone, that doesn't mean you'll treat them right.

I dont expect respect from anyone, and i write, flame, judge, curse or w.e on what i think FOR ME is right/wrong, and i invite others to do me the same, im open to it; i agree with ~MKB~ when he says that, you dont need to respect to not flame, foul language, judge or w.e, its on each individuals way to see everything, i dont respect most of the people in this site, to be quite frankly not more than 10, even on those i tend to friction in ideals or beliefs i feel more respect/admiration than on those that write nonsense or try to come closer/friendly. To me respect comes with the price of virtue, not only with respect back; when you learn something from someone is the moment you respect him.

In some aspects respect is gained by the actions of the ones here, i have alot of respecct for people on this site, even if ideas and values are things we disagree on. but true many things make a good vr member.

*Rating-fair and not too unjust

*Repsect- earned not given

*drama- not such thing promoted

*rules- in which every society must have

*Aliegence- to coven and friends

*Admiration- for those who do so much to keep the sanity of this place.

To add to your list, cadrewolf, one also must have friendship/the ability to be a friend.

Otherwise the person wouldn't be able to "survive" here, as it were.

All in all, the thing that makes a good VR citizen is "TIME". Only in time will others come to respect you. Only in time will you have an acceptable list of friends that communicate with you on a regular basis. Only in time will you achieve an admin position such as Acolyte, Dominar etc. Only in time. That is what makes a good VR citizen.

Hmm, this varies from spieces to spiecs, Some prefer to do random rating and some prefer to do things to their profiles. I think if one was to be active with the website and encourage others to do the same, this would make a good VR member.

A good VR member is someone who pays for their membership (in turn helps the site, which Cancer has so generously created for us), participates when they can in their house or coven if they hold membership in one, respects their fellow coven/house mates too, follows & respects the rules of VR, rates profiles & fairly and has a decent profile & has put effort into it. Also the best VR citizen also respects the admin of VR and realizes they are here to help the members and they are put in charge for a reason.

Any forum wants people who are civil, BUT, there are a lot of people who come here to stir the pot. You see it on their profiles. I am from an older generation so I have a hard time respecting someone who writes how hateful they are, makes threats about using stamps which is a privilege, and uses a long list of cuss words. I find the use of the term "drama" funny since it is relatively modern in the way it is used. People will get offended and people will bicker. We have to agree to disagree. I usually stop posting in the thread when I feel this way and I say something sometimes and other times I go bang my head into the wall figuratively, lol. In all actuality, most of the places I post I never return to unless I am trying to be more active. It has only been lately I have been doing that. Does that make me a good citizen to check responses? Once I say something I only come back once in awhile. It has been this time period that I have responded frequently but you can't count on me seeing any of the retorts, lol.

The clincher is reading over and over either there is not much for me to say or I don't know what to say or write to me and I will tell you all about me. I am not going to give a good score for that. I feel that negates all the hard work others do here to primp up their profiles whether or not I like their taste. I don't rate by whether I like someone's taste. I rate by what looks to be work put into its creation. I think it also defeats the spirit of the place.

There will always be those that will clash when there is such a wide age gap in memberships. I also don't like to see abuse of power. In a position of authority it is not respectful to feel you have the right to be demeaning to someone else. There are a lot of rules to remember.

One thing that would help is taking away the ability for ANYONE to see what they have been rated premium or not. This has caused a lot of bickering. Why do we need to know? No matter what one does there will be new people who come in and give bad ratings. Seems to be the nature of the beast. After all it really is competitive and some take it too seriously, including me sometimes. By the way, I didn't know this was a country, lol.

All I am saying is its better if you have the money to buy a premium membership as it helps support the site. This is the only site I have purchased a profile on. You're not a bad member, but I feel the ideal ones will attempt to get a premium. That's just my opinon and I tend to speak my mind. My oppionions are just that. It makes the site stronger if those who can afford a premium, do purchase one. I am far from rich and I did so.

well i think a good vr citien is one who helps others and that does not mean doint the work for a person but takeing the time to teach the person how things are done and to make as many friends on here as one can and to help keep the peace between all covens and houses and to do this for no rewards at all.
But one you will have many friends.

Being VR member I live my own, you will not see me talking to unknown in inducing them to talk, yet when nature comes matching this is natural we talk each other. we are friendly souls. I do see a soul in them. wither i quiet at the time of rating but rate them as the profile placed and a soul is behnd the efoort of that profile. why should i make that soul bother for getting low ratings. I do talk with my own peepal freely they met on VR only and now unbreakable part of my friendship. ad being VR member if some one talk me I talk them in very frendly manner with true inner and not just as formality. I do not talk each and every soul. I don't talk to whom may do not want any talk and I do not disturb them in their own way.

How many find me disturbing by talking them or I took initiative? But yet my respect to everyone is supreme that is respect to soul and I do talk my many own peepal when they have time. We do have fun too in talking. my message center s full of over 600 messages within a month. last month i deleted everything. yet i do find the way to rate them. this VR is the best site of sport fun and live freely on net. you have forums to participating, your own coven too. and you have 10000+ souls visitiing here and there as guest, what wouldbe better than this?

Citizen part, venerating other earns us reverence this is the barter exchange. and beyond that you are approaching to one conscious. that is more greater than mind. if you earn attention of conscious, you earns the best friend thisis the realm of goodness in the darkness. if any subconscious around you, you feel some one thinking of you. Coz its spirit and conscous around you. here are many your friends paying attention on you. I am still ungrown psychic vampire. but if I use sbconscious to talk one, many would be my best friend. :)

whatever you, will find othes of the same nature. if you are good to them, they will be good to you. and if you uses harshness against them, they will leave you. Your nature makes good or bad nature on this VR.

It`s not sufficient but necessary.

A good citizen is one that adds to the purpose of the society...

QUOTE---
My original intent for Vampire Rave, although now somewhat on the back burner, still remains. It is my goal to have this site catalog every occurrence of the vampire throughout history.

Cancer
Jan 02 2006
---ENDQUOTE

It is interesting that as vampirism is a living entity (like a language) the existance of the site and everythign that occurs here has added to the "catalog every occurance of the vampire throughout history."

Most of the citizens of VR are inconsequential as everything worth saying on the topic has pretty much already been beat to death.

It is sad that so many believe that VR is an Alternative Lifestyles Social Network and not a place to learn and study.

A good citizen of VR is someone who adds to the sum of Vampire information, is a student of vampire information, or in some way connects others to the knowledge.

Anything else does not make you a contributing member of the society but rather more like livestock that grant sustainability to the origional project.

I was gonna just say I agree with the idea of respect particularly in regards to individuality, in the effort to not be redundant. Plenty of really good answers already.

But I caught that last post referring to some as "livestock". That's kind of rough. There is a finite amount even to vampirism to catalog. For those with nothing much to add that hasnt already been previously added, I think helping to sustain the community should rate a little higher than being called "livestock".

Back to Respect...?

My only problem with things being called a source of vampire information is that it should be divided more into categories of information. I know the database has different divisions but when it comes to straight definitions and general history I think they should be qualified by foklore (handed down orally and now written) mythology, superstition, cultural, gaming, literary and modern community, etc. Therefore you know where the viewpoints come from and it would be clearer to members, aside from just saying this dictionary or that encyclopedia. They will merely have the prevailing superstitions as definition. Such as a coven being a group of 13 witches.

Aside from that just be open minded, friendly and follow the rules if you can remember them all. Sometimes I find certain people intriguing but then they say somewhere on their profile, don't bother me I am an ass____and I don't want to talk to anyone. Why do they come here in the first place I wonder? Others as well telling people not to do things they are given the right to do or they will come and give you a 1. That's their prerogative but again, why did they come here? The Friends list: I don't care who adds me. Who does that hurt? Nobody, and to be so standoffish I think misses the point of the place. So these are things I think should change to be a good member here and get along with everyone.

I supose I could have said serf...

there are so few good synonyms for non-citizen: and livestock is funny as hell from a predators (ie vampire) point of view, and in it's indirect usage to RP; not to mention that the living stock of any business is always called livestock.

Citizenship is an exchange of rights and priveledges between you and the state, not you and other citizens.

Sure respect makes you a good neighbor, it doesn't make you a good citizen.

i like to think that a "good VR member" is one that is in my eyes respect full. honor is a good thing also . i dont really care if they are paying members or not. every one supports the site in there own way. in my eyes the TOS and Admins are there to only make it better for others.

there are a lot of good members on here .. and for me it just makes the experience all the more better. :)

A good VR Citizen knows the difference between role play and mental illness. When another VR Citizen is convinced that they are superhuman and/or cursed then a good citizen talks them off the ledge of sanity whereas a poor citizen encourages and feeds the insanity fire. sometimes its hard to tell if a member is serious when they make claims on VR, I know I know.

I think the whole idea of being a 'good member' is crap.

It's kind of like finding the holy grail. While it may exist.. you're going to spend a damn long time trying to find one.

Why? Because everyone has different ideas of what a good member is.

I think a good member is someone who can hop up and down on one foot, while chanting "Vampires are Real" and submitting things into the database are good members.

i would to put a opinion about the ratesystem that have been discussed in this topic. I agree with what mbk said. For me the ratesystem here on vr have lost it´s true function. It really dont say much well in most cases nothing. Vr members use it just to level up. I wonder how many who actually stay and read the profile they visit? Vr members use nice ratestamps that is very pretty. But me personal feel when someone actually write something instead for place a stamp in it means alot more , and i got a feeling that member actually mean what he or she rate my profile. I comit im not better myself. I to use a ratestamp more often then i feel i should. But i do actually read profiles:) .

I think that having enough respect for the other members of this society makes you a good VR member.

We each have our own views, opinions and differences. That is what makes us individuals. And it takes all types of individuals to make up a good society.

What makes a good VR citizen ?

Apart from the obvious ie: keeping to the TOS, I think it's the willingness to allow other members to give voice to their thoughts/ideas/lifestyles etc and at the same time taking care to ask questions that are pertinent to further understaning in a polite fashion.

True sinora.

We must have respect for all opinions whether it goes with our thought or not. To listen and give respect even if the topic is so far out. People have the same respect as we want to have.

Positive interaction would be a good place to start. Participation, there are so many ways that you can be a part of VR which in turn means not just "creating" a profile to only pop in once a month or even year. Be fair and open minded as to allow others to be their own individual. Following TOS. The list goes on....

Respect I find to be a "dicey" word. I don't have to respect everyone on this site to be a good member, respect is earned. I think MBK's definition was best, "to be held in high regard" and I can't say that I feel that way about 50% of the members here. Its not automatic. I can treat you decently without having to respect you. Like I said, its earned.

I definitely agree with Pandora. Respect is earned. Because, unfortunately, even in vr, we will still deal with manipulative people. So we can't always be caring and respectful. We have to protect ourselves and our friends too.

Alright, point taken I guess, on the living stock...but I dunno, I think serf would have been a step up lol.

In either case...I think I'm a pretty good citizen in that I obey laws and pay my VR "taxes"....I've not started any insurrections yet.

All those who have been here some time and know the workings of Vr are good citizens, yet there are few who post in wrong spots our put pics that do not belong here on this site. does this make them bad our they just didn't look at the Vr manual. If i am unsure of something I always look back to the guide lines set to this site.

It does not make them bad, with time many here find things more easy to roam with in this site or its sister sites. Time is a factor, yet those who seem to be here alot and yet (in my terms ) do not wish to set the guide lines have moved to isolation of themselves.

i have seen no disrespect from others and there are many here that if someone needs help they are always there to lend a hand.

But alot what Pandora has said about gaining the respect I think it holds a lot of vilitity to this site.

Depends on level and such to a degree too, cause if it's a higher level/senior member on here they should try and help others on here when they can, like help whelps and mosquitos when they can. Also is civil and respectful of other members and appreciates the VR community and the VR experience in general.

True MBk, yet like our own naturally society ever point of the aspect is important the structural integrety of the culture. we see that here.

People from every walk of life with interest in vampires, cult or whatever make up the spectrum of this site. Their own ideas, beliefs, structures in life. what we may consider bad is not, yet here we only see that edges of the moniter and not the whole structure of a sub-culture.

What gives us a right to deem bad, maybe one aspect is someone making mock profiles to bash us. yes that would be one, drama is in every walk of life and we can choose to hear it our walk away.

Many of the main points we want in life and what we deem bad or good, we bring here to VR.

I just do not see why people think being respected makes you a good person or a good citizen.

Some people respect trolls. Does that make the trolls good citizens?

Some people respect trouble makers and fools who act like children. Does that make them good?

Respect is worthless. The only use of respect is to hold onto the image of a person you want to try to be like.

A good VR "Citizen":

1) Follows the Rules of the Prince and, if belonging to one, their Coven.

2) Reads the VR Manual.

3) Does not "demand" respect; respect is a two-way street and has to be earned. And the respect I am referring to in a place like this is respecting people for who and what they are and what they believe in. Plus having "respect" (when it comes to following rules and such) towards the Prince, Staff, House/Coven Masters.

4) Does not "expect" preferential treatment. Have seen a few of the Premium and higher-ranking Members with a bit of an attitude, which can be intimidating to new members especially when it comes to the rating of Profiles. A profile should be judged by the merits of its content, not simply by the fact it has a nice css theme and music with a few sentences and is owned by a Premium Member.

4) Leads by example: If the "Uppers" don't follow the rules, how can they expect the new Members to?

5) Helps other Members when at all possible. I try my best to constantly help new members with their pages when I can and have made quite a few rating and protection tags when asked.

6) Doesn't cause any drama. I try my best to mind my own business and refrain from responding to comments on Profiles or in the Forums I think are in poor taste or biased. That is why we have Dominars and Sentorans.

If everyone followed the rules this place would have no excitement what's so ever.

-No One could complain.

-There'd be none of the pissy journals that a lot of people flock to read.

-No Sending bad members to Purgatory.

-No Trolls.

-No Rumors.

-Everyone would have close to the same profile layouts.

On and on and on.

That would be pretty boring.

I think the a Good VR Citizen says 'screw the rules.. screw the norm.. I'm going to do what I want and not give a damn what people think'.

They keep it more entertaining.

What makes a good VR citizen? simply this:
Respect, Honor and Tolerance.
Respect for all others who choose to be a part of VR;
Have the honor to operate within the code by which we live in the VR Community (in other words follow the rules);
Tolerance for all who choose to make VR their home.

Are not most of us good VR people, those who have had some time on here, we know that there will be those who challenge some of the rules, yet it does not make them bad. We all are individuals in taste and opinions. we must accept others for this and like societies in all forms of life, rules are in place to hamper those who would turn this society on its head and destroy it.

Being tolerant doesn't truly make someone a good or bad VR citizen. There are a lot of morons and drama queens who are on VR as well, and it is definitely hard to show any tolerance towards them.

Same goes for those who like to cause trouble here.

Cadamia - I understand the my space thought and no invasion within it, yet I percieve us with our profiles and journals are invitations within our thoughts and feelings.

yet we must have some acceptance and not rude invitations from the mass that view them.

Rude behavior to me is not tolarated on any sorts, with me or to my friends. Yet good citezins are those who take in all and also give to help those here. whether the newbies or the people who have reamined true to this site.

IMHO *laughs*

Respect is not something that is earned, it is the word used to describe an equal relationship.

Some months ago I got a question wrong on a Psychology quiz about prejudice. To paraphrase the question, "Prejudice can be Elliminated simply by interaction. T/F."

Believing I had no prejudice, due largely to my extensive travels, I immediately believed this to be true. I was surprised to find that this was false and pompous; because apparantly it is insufficient to just have interaction, but you must have interaction as equals to eliminate prejudice.

*Epiphany*

Using this definition, I realized just how prejudiced I actually was... toward all the people I thought I was better than, for whatever reason (snobbery.)

Not respecting other people is a character flaw as severe as any racial/cultural profiling, it is not something that someone else has to earn.

MBK I think several on here can see two side of any post and yet still in some way be open minded to others views. Logic tells us that we must see both sides to understand the whys and whats.

Sometimes we ourselves do not realize that this is happening.

Open -minded does not mean following the commitment of given up your own rational beliefs, just to listen and ponder why someone would in fact bring this to light and see if it does hold some value.

allowing others to have different views then yours, and giving the right to other to think differently. following the rules set and respect the others the same way you want to be respected...also one last thing...remember we are all humans, therefor imperfect and do mistakes.

so passing over the little things, and moving on, allowing others to be imperfect and to hurt us, granting them the chance to corect, and to allow them forgiveness.

What makes a good VR citizen? Heh, good question.

Show respect. Such a thing in life is not freely given so no one should expect it to be on here either.

If you don't like a person on here no one is forcing you to interact with them. There are nearly 11,000 users on VR- this website is DEFINITELY big enough for all of us.

Save the malicious actions for some place else. I'm not talking about down-rating, that's just a number. I'm referring to those who would try to meet a person offline for malicious reasons or even predatory ones. If you're really that much of a scumbag, you're not fit for a site like this..... period.

A good Citizen is the one who respect the opinions of others.
Is the one who will not treat VR like "my space", which is out of control. I have been here for almost 3 years and the drama and the whining is part of what make VR a success. VR is like a soap opera. Enjoy it if you don't like someone...BLOCK in effect.

I'd have to say that way you get along with others. Be respectful of other views, open minded. There are people here who are trying to learn about stuff, and if you scoff at them, say, "You're no vampire, get lost," and ostracize them, then you're not being a very good member. The sole basis of this place is to be a form of unofficial community for like-minded individuals and those who want to learn, to come together and do some actual learning. So long as you remember that, then you're doing fine.

I don't think rating has anything to do with how you are as a VR citizen, it's how you conduct yourself. If you get along with the people around you, and don't make yourself into a pest, then I'd say you're one damn good member.

What makes a good VR citizen is respect of course but also tolerance. Tolerance of certain things we not agree with certain individual but at times we tolerate it because even though we are different it all adds to VR. That is what makes our site what it is today. i would have to say what makes someone good for vr isnt attitude personality the physical or material look.

Its part respect,part courtesy,part understanding,

and the drive not to cause drama. If you look at a lot of who some of us do not like on this site why do we not like them ? then look at ourselves and see what matches with what we did not like about that person. To understand To respect and To show courtesy to others. I feel makes a good VR member.

Informative threads that are based on accurate discriptions as to what the thread poster wants discussions of merit and mature responses...Instead of half ass, dumb witted, blatantly stupid common sense threads that every other "kid" on here focuses on.

This is what makes a good VR citizen in my opinion.

Members that actually go through old thread posts before starting newer ones that are the same as the ones either above it or below it just for one of the Dominars to tell them that "there is already another active thread that they can contribute to."

Most of the things said are ok but it isn't respect. How can someone get respect who is a total stranger? That really has to be earned. It is rather being polite, having good manners, realizing there are people from 14 up on this site. Showing good sense in what you say and put on your profiles whether it will get suspended or not. Being fair to others in that their tastes may not be your own in graphics, music and layout. Look at the work and time put in. You know by just looking at them.

As far as in here it is a perpetual tug of war and you know predictably who will be doing the tugging. We all have varying points of view and there are people in here from the community because they think it is an invitation to be here due to what the home page says. Just like religion and for some it is just that people should be polite. It doesn't require anyone's belief. It should be specified in threads if you mean historical, literary or community based vampires you are discussing and it should stay only on that in the thread and religion should be kept out except in cases for an historical connection along with other sources as well. It seems to cause rancor. Don't post it like it is fact because it is from some religious writing but only as an example and then people hopefully won't get upset as I have seen in the last few days.

If you sum it down you said exactly what respect constitute for... I think having a -fair outlook on things- is enough to be a "good" VR citizen. If I don't like a word in his/her page, I really don't have to be pity to go for the "1", thats why there is 10 numbers.

I once saw a profile that said 'something like this':
You don't have anything in your page you get a 1---Fair
You don't have something worth of my taste you get a 1---Ok
You have anything to do with making fun of Jesus you get a 1----??
You have anything anti-christian on yoor page get a 1----??
you have something to do with satanism/luciferianism you get a 1---?

I don't have anything against anyones beliefs but this is irritating, I think judging a profile based on YOUR beliefs is rather dumb, half of this website have vampires sucking blood and demons, werewolves, bloody images and things of that sort, If thats so having a profile here is enough to contradict your posture.

I am thinking that people are misunderstanding what polite and respect means. I feel we should respect Cancer just for the fact that he built this forum and it is HIS whether some of the rules and such and people he has chosen are not to our liking. It is a hard lesson I am trying to learn myself. I don't know him and most of the others so the only way I can acquire that trait toward any of them is by their actions...if they are mean spirited then I will not respect them much but if they are fair and use a low key approach I probably will but still I must be polite because if I don't like it here the door is always open for leaving.

Here are the definitions:

Main Entry:1re·spect
Pronunciation:ri-ˈspekt
Function:noun
Etymology:Middle English, from Latin respectus, literally, act of looking back, from respicere to look back, regard, from re- + specere to look — more at spy
Date:14th century
1: a relation or reference to a particular thing or situation
2: an act of giving particular attention : consideration
3 a: high or special regard : esteem b: the quality or state of being esteemed cplural : expressions of respect or deference

Main Entry:po·lite
Pronunciation:pə-ˈlīt
Function:adjective
Inflected Form(s):po·lit·er; po·lit·est
Etymology:Middle English (Scots) polit, Latin politus, from past participle of polire
Date:15th century
1 a: of, relating to, or having the characteristics of advanced culture b: marked by refined cultural interests and pursuits especially in arts and belles lettres
2 a: showing or characterized by correct social usage b: marked by an appearance of consideration, tact, deference, or courtesy c: marked by a lack of roughness or crudities
synonyms see civil

You see I don't have to respect someone to be civil. #2 b is what I am referring to as far as politeness. To hold some in high esteem for me would be to know them and regard them in this manner due to their actions. Most here I don't know so how could that be but it doesn't mean I should be rude to them. This is how you get a long on a forum and over time people learn to respect those that show civility and kindness to others.

Okay, to start with...I agree with nearly every word written in this thread by cadrewolf. Odd, as I don't think I know 'em.

I agree with most of what MBK was trying to point out, with PsiVampire's notations of VR's own points, and a few odd remarks here and there.

Also, I would like to point out one more item, in reference to this statement:

>>>A good citizen of VR is someone who adds to the sum of Vampire information, is a student of vampire information, or in some way connects others to the knowledge.

I agree whole-heartedly. I am not much for 'adding to the knowledge', but like Cancer I am intent in the study of the information available upon the subject. The only contributions I could give are in Vampire Fiction or Artwork. I know I am not helping expand to the extent of the VR's Creation and that bugs me sometimes.

Still, I like and even approve of the livestock reference. Perhaps it is the whole 'being raised on a farm' and also a 'well-educated' thing combined, but I actually got it the first time around without explaination. That was a cute and even appropriate term. I don't mind being livestock in the company. I have two lifetime accounts. I also have multiple shirts and pins and refer everyone I like to come here. In some way, a Good VR Member is someone that Cancer himself finds an use for (ironic or otherwise). If he disapproves, you are a bad puppy dog!

A good VR citizen is someone that doesn't start drama, follows the rules, and generally acts like a decent human being.

Rating has nothing to do with it. How a person rates doesn't make them a bad VR member. How they go about it (ie: Starting crap over a low rate) determines how a person is.

I guess like MBK said, if you don't make the site want to push you in front of a bus then you are good to go.

I completely agree with what Azuredark has said regarding Respect and Politeness.

I have had one or two interactions with high level members that have left me fuming. I don't respect them, but I will be forever polite to them because of their standing in the community.

I firmly believe that a good VR citizen is someone who is polite to other members, generous with their time, advice and assistance to ANYONE who asks - not just the newbies. Participates in forums threads, and chats with other members, spreads the VR word, adds to the database when they can.

I would like to think that the majority of people here are 'good' citizens.

...what would make a "good" citizen
anywhere?
one that contributed in some fashion
to moving the body politic foward
toward self-perpetuating complete
efficiency...
the problem is anyone given
citizen will, not just might, but
will
give you a different definition of
"complete efficiency"...
the puruit of unification of goals and
a shared definition of complete efficiency
is nothing more than a search
for peace...

so this "good" versus "bad" is moot...
and a person's mere presence here
contributes in some fashion, and
if the ultimate goal is preservation
of the database...
then we are all "good" citizens...

To be a good Vampire Rave citizen, you simply have to create a profile. It is the diversity of each member that creates the illusion we all enjoy. Each member adds to the information of the site by sharing their beliefs, right or wrong.

...i love that answer...

i just don't think there is a clear
answer...
not the way the question is stated...
who's opinion of what is a
"good vr citizen" should be the
foundation of the question...
are we going by cancer's definition?
shouldn't we, since he began
this?
has anyone asked him?
;)

In my humble opinion, and I am sure others have stated these likewise, a good VR 'citizen' would be someone who makes the experience of being on VR much easier and simpler for others. Treating others with respect that you know they expect from you. And also someone who follows and upholds the VR TOS. :)

Tolerance
Friendship
Kindness
Empathy
Contributive
Benevolence
etc

I would say someone who doesn't start any drama. There is nothing in this world that I hate more. And as most people in this thread were saying, someone who adds to VR and doesn't shove their beliefs on others.

To me what I feel makes a good VR ciitizen is one who follows the rules set forth. One who is open minded and respectful of other peoples beliefs and values and one who does not want to cause drama just because they are bored.

I'd actually have to throw in, if you actually stick around VR, that makes you a good Raver. If you just disappear quickly you aren't really much of a member at all.

Heh, there's no clear-cut answer to this as everyone has their own opinions about such. Forget rating, it's nothing but a number on a website but look at the big picture- co existence I'd possible if we try.... Or you can just ignore or block. Simple, eh?
