Has anyone else noticed that every few hundred years there is a new religion that gets all the mainstream attention and is the socially acceptable religion?
Last was catholicism, now its protestant, whats next?

I haven't taken notice to a change either, but as time changes so does everything, including religious practice and beliefs.

We also have more young adults deciding no domination of preference, as well as leaving it up to their children born to them to choose and decide for themselves when they are grown.

I have to admit that there are now more and more religions opening up all around the world. It isnt no more the main ones ie Catholics, Anglican etc.

Not being a religious person I do think this is good as it is breaking down the dominance of religious powers. There still is a long way to go but I dont believe it is as dominate as pass years.

Catholic will always be a dominate leader in Religion just because of its size. But in time I dont think there will be a Pope that rules over everybody. Ppl are turning away from being told wat they have to do.

It depends where you live and which culture as well as sub-culture.

In Malta still the majority practice Catholicism and the Gospel of Judas (still less than Catholicism) and now Islam too because of foreigners, but between people who listen to metal music there is a big group who say they practice Satanism, while many youths, usually those who label themselves as Goths, say they practice Wicca and/or Witchcraft, and there are many who say they're Atheists too.

I noticed though, that Catholicism is getting less practiced by youths here, but it still remains the most popular religion. I never heard of anyone being Protestant, here.

Totally agreed. Catholic will always be the most popular religion because of the sheer size and where it is practiced. I cannot see any religion being as big.

With the younger generation it does seem to depend on what you do as to wat religious belief you attend.

I have not noticed that but what I have noticed is while looking through the web sites I noticed that some said that there are 2.1 billion Christians in the world. Included in that total was the Catholics which have a following of 1.1 billion.

The Muslims (Islam) has about 1.5 billion

Most appear to state that Islam will be the dominant religion in the future if they look at the projected growth of all these two religions.

The projection on one site was in 15 years the Christians will be a minority.

One of the sites I looked at was http://muslim-canada.org/muslimstats.html

More then often it is just repackaging an existing religious docterine to appeal more to secular idealist. The same reason denominations, and splinter groups develop, along with the occasional cult.

I kinda wish that my religion would be more acceptable by society. It's 2010 people get over your disagreements of who's better then who.

Fact is people can believe what they want to and who they want to.

Fact is you shouldn't fight it just accept that people have different view points then you do.

I accept others as they are which are people they may not believe in the same thing that I do, but they are still my close friends and they don't give a damn what I believe in they still talk to me about other things.

The only thing that I have noticed in the UK is that in the 70's 80's and 90's there were religous nutcase trying to kill us in the name of GOD (IRA terrorism)

Now in the 21st Century in the UK religous nutcases are still trying to kill us in the name of GOD but this time its not thr Irish its ISLAM

Islam must be the most discussed religion in the UK at the moment

I have seen that trend... How over the hundreds of years there's been so many different religions and changes, but I have no care for mainstream religions, or the cult followings, my opinion of course, that they get. I Myself follow Ásatrú, the old Norse religion that was almost destroyed once christianity came around. I would like to see our numbers grow, but, will not be saddened if they do not.

I'm not too sure what may be the next big religion. Seems people switch to only follow what sounds the most "sugar coated" to them, understandably so. But, I think instead of being another face in the crowd, we should follow what we truely believe fits ourself, and what we are comfortable with.

You bring up a very good point! I also remember when studying the Kabbalah was the big 'fad' in Hollywood about 10 years ago. I say 'fad' because while it was a big craze, it fizzled out eventually (at least from the mainstream). Also don't forget about Scientology.

Protestant religions have been around for centuries...and surprisingly enough most of the people who work in the White House, especially in the Senate and House of Representatives, are not Catholic but Protestant. Just an interesting, useless factiod. ;) :)

to me it seems that the catholic and protestant religions are always in the lime light compare to any others yet I may be wrong LOl

this is true because years ago we would not even be having a website such as this or even talking openly about Wicca and Satanism and even the Scientolgist, they are alla eligion yet, before no one would even talk about them much less admit to having them as a religion that we believe in.

So in time I feel alot of things will become more acceptable to the puplic to a certain degree. :)

Over the last 30 years I've watched the paganism I grew up with gradually grow in acceptance.

First it was little things..link the Power Rangers..

Then it was the reruns of Bewitched..

The popularity of the Cunningham and Buckland books..

Then the cartoons featuring fairys, dragons, and witches..and the witches were good..

Then..Twitches

Sailor Moon...

W.I.T.C.H

Little things..

Christianity is dying a slow and ugly death..

I made a statement at a gathering not long ago that there were far more pagans in this county than people suspected.

I got a couple of derisive comments at the time, so to prove my point I had a couple boxes of rubber balls placed by the exit. I asked that during intermission the attendees place a black ball in the black voting box if they were pagan, and a white if they were Xtian.

I woke a few people up when I announced before the end of the program that 48% of the people attending were pagan.

I think I got their attention.

I agree Paganism /Occult are far more acceptable nowadays and I think this is for two main reasons.
Firstly I.T has opened the door to that which is true and that which is false.
For so long other religions have repressed information by burning books and sometimes people.
Secondly science-
Nowadays they can't get away with it and science is showing us things like the scrolls written about Jesus and Mary Carbon date to 300yrs before he was supposed to have been born.
When science proved dark matter existed and the government began dabbling in Psychic research the general populous finally woke up and smelt the coffee.

currently the fastest growing religion in the u.s. and in the u.k. is islam. for better or for worse.
for those of us that are heathen or pagan (i am), id say that is a very negative thing. a conservative christian is irritating.
a conservative muslem could be deadly to someone whos faith is "not of the book".

I Donot think it is a matter of who gets noticed and who doesnt or which religion makes it to the top and what not. I think it is a matter of getting people to choose now and belong to something. Every religion wants to be on top every religion wants you to believe that theirs is the truth. But in all reality I believe paaganism is what all religions stem from. We come from the earth and then return to the earth. These religions that claim there is just one god and you should do as the bible commands is corrupt and just a way to get people to conform to one mans belief. How can you control the forces of nature of which you have been created? You cant they control you. We have for so long put away our natural instincts and put blame where it does not belong because religion tells us to. That we bahave badly due to the devil inside us that we need a blance of bad to outway the good. I believe this is crap. We should all take blame for what we wrongfully do and stop placing blame elsewhere. We should get back to giving back to the earth what we take and start doing things because in general we are all good. It is war of religion and all these laws to keep us contained that are causing us to go awry. just my opinion anyway

No, I haven't noticed that, but it depends on whether you are referring to "fads" or recognized religions.

I inherited a large tome published by LIFE called the World's Greatest Religions. Anyone else own it?

It was published in 1957 and characterized Islam as the fastest growing religion on the planet. "A key to its appeal . . . . is an all-pervasive way of life . . . a key to its power lies in the word Islam which means 'submission'."

Everything else falls away.

Wow, people really went all out on this one... bad statistics proving bad theories.

A.) all the derivitives of Christianity are Christianity... they are not seperate religions... there are only political leaders challenging each other (in an unchristian like way) for intellectual property (and your money.) There was only one Jesus (although all the major prophets were Christs) so only one religion.

B.) I can think of several religions that have died completely out, not sects, but religions. (Sabeanism, Druidism, and numerous greek pantheons.)

C.) It's closer to every 600-1000 years that there is a new religion... sects however pop up all the time.

D.) There are a lot of belief systems that do not qualify as religion, but they get lumped in with them. (Ie The founder of the Sikhs insisted that he was not inventing a new religion but trying to reunify Hinduism with Islam.)

E.) Every time there has been a new major religion (affirmation of the covenant) there has been rapid advancement in world technologies for about 100 years after.

circa 5000bce, 4000bce, 3000bce, 1300bce, 550bce, 0bc, 650ce, 1850ce
These are of course dates for monotheism... the roots of polytheism are lost to obscurity... just as Sabeanism is lost.

Last I heard, there were approximately 40,000 religions in the world-most of them stemming from Catholicism, but not all of them, of course. New religious ideals pop up every day, and most aren't even religions, but rather philisophical veiwpoints. People think Buddhism is a religion, but most Buddhists I know or have met, claim its a philosophy. I don't know. The future religion, I believe, will be dictated globally, all religions clumped into one-part of the One World Order agenda, perhaps.

i dont get the most religions stem from catholicism. what of all the various tribal beliefs, and such, not to mention that while christianity is the largest religion, islam isnt far behind at all (and is currently the fastest growing belief system).

I do not believe one can accurately state that any religion or belief system is predominant on a world-wide scale;
the dominance of a particular religion has much to do with geography, race, ethnicity, region, culture, even geo-political factors.

The answer to which belief system is dominant will be different in France as opposed to India as opposed to Iran as opposed to Japan, ad infinitum . . . .

You know the irony regarding this post-acceptable thread discussion is the fact that once we all realize the area of where this discussion has gone, one variable stands out the most in regards to which is the dominant belief and or practice.

All religions seem to center around Paganism. In one form or another; ideas, philosophies, days of solice, methods of practice, etc. all seem to stem from or are borrowed from the Pagan aspects or polytheistic ways.

If the Christians don't wipe out some of the Muslim's numbers, of course.

Well I feel that the Christianity, Catholicism, will always be a main stream it has now for many thousands of years.

Others have also been around as long or even longer. Such a Paganism, Wiccan/WitchCraft, Musulim, etc. They come from way back when. But has not ever really made the mainstream as to being a popular religion and well I just do nto see it pushing the main ones out at any time. Yet,I couldbe wrong, I just seehow society and people have not really believe that htese Ancient older ones are of any true value yet, they are in my opinion, but to have Society to accept them.. that is yet to be seen.

Hello:
Many religions in the early days adapted some of the pagan trappings to make it easier to recruit from these groups...and it worked. The other various religions grew in popularity like so many brushfires while the Paganistic Folk religions all but died out. They are still hanging on and seem to be enjoying a resurgence of late but I feel they will never become part of the mainstream theologic realm which I think is sad.

great post kglitterous, i agree with soul shroud about that, and also his post.

if islam takes over, and gets the majority, then we have sharia law (hope i spelled that correctly). not a pretty picture, especially for women.

if atheism takes over as the dominant "religion", i think the holidays might be a bit dull. lol

oh...and while i understand the posts about paganism/wicca, please recall that wicca was created in the 1950's, and while it uses some outward forms of ancient beliefs, it is basically a new invention. i have many wiccan friends, and enjoy the system, but i also read way too much history lol.

LOl yes it would be bad for the women if the islamic religions took over
I live in Turkey ( Asia Minor) for like 5 years and the women wear head dress if married etc. and are slave to their men folk, will not happen with me lOl
As for the Athiesm it is a religion in it self. I mean you have a belief to notbelieve Lol so bottom line in all religions inmy opinion is considered Faith and Belief, I do no tlike to say this or that one is stronger than the other.

I like to say that all people have a Faith or Belief in SOMETHING * and if you say no I do not your full of it.
I mean as I said about Athiesm, the believe that there is no god or whatever and they are strong on Not Believing , and that in itself makes it a Faith/ Belief in what they Believe. hope I did not lose anyone in all that Faith and Belief, cause we all have something we feel is what keeps us going everyday or to stand for

So there really is no non- religion out there. Just lot of double talk and changing things up etc.

I know people who are Satanic and when we talk it is like they are like wellwe are not the kind that sacrifices humans, or animals we jsut believe in Satan etc. ok so each religion or faith has a million different ways that their followers adapt to fit their need as for a religion or faith.

Let's keep things in perspective. Over 90% of Americans still do not identify as athiests. We can hope and ~wink~ pray for tolerance.

Luckily for me in UK, Cornwall is a Celtic county that very much considers itself a seperate Country a lot like Wales does in a political sense...although we will never be recognised as

Being a celtic county, |Cornwall's religion is Paganism, witchcraft of old is a fundamental part of its culture and it is still evident today. Cornwall has the largest population of Pagans than any other place in the UK, if you consider pagan to population ratio that is.

Islam will never touch Cornwall even if it takes over the rest of the UK

FYI a cornishman will not even sell his house to someone who is of ethnic origin and thats the truth racial as it is thats the way they are here in this County.

PS I am not cornish before anyone places me in that box

IDk if they're really accepted,so much as rediculed and out lawed and like violated...but after all of that fun stuff, they do become mainstream and acceptable. I guess the only diff between a cult is a few extra followers and the ability to last a few years.... lol.

I haven't really noticed very much. I would probably guess that Morman, Jehova Witness, or Christianity would be next.

I am beginning to wonder if anyone in this thread aside from myself have ever done a study on the origins of theology in general...

Yes,
theology is what people did before the internet, Tv, and Cinemas because they were bored.
Then they all started stealing from each other to gain power as there is no such thing as a new idea.

Philosophies and ideas often originated from the Vedic prophesies and now we all know it's bull shit, religions are imploding upon it their own frail foundations.

Thus they look elsewhere and focus on the truth such as light, dark the good and us. We were not made up by some pot-head on a mountain and so to summarise this is why we are getting acceptable.

Simply because we are not full of shit.LOL!

Please explain ~Fallingstar~, the Videc prophesies for the audience's benefit. As I am sure most of them have not heard of the Videc prophesies before now.

As well as how the prophesies related to modern theology as it now stands.

I personally think that changes in religion and what is currently popular reflects growth of our spiritual awareness.

Once upon a time we believed there was a god or goddess for every little thing that happened in life. Then we changed our perspective to a singular god who encompassed everything.

Then we blindly believed and followed the rules of the one god..

Now we are opening up and becoming more flexible spiritually.

I think it is all a sign of our constant spiritual evolution.
