Alchemy is a useful tool, and part of the foundation of all of nature.

its basic components that are a must have are:

The sulfer, or the body to be worked on

The salt, the fluids that consitiute the body

The mercury, the spirit of the body,

You must have these, then subject them to the different stages, cold, dry, wet, moist. Different recipes are for different things,

This also applies to how one percieves the nature of the world, having three parts in one body. Taking to the highest extreme allowing for one to understand how to manipulate the three parts in a living entity.

Alchemy (Science) is the study of mixing chemicals together to see what kind of reaction we get.

Without Alchemy we wouldn't have the cleaning products, the fuel, the medicines, etc. etc. etc. that we have today.

A craft I do is a form of alchemy in that we use raw ingredients to form glass. Then I fine-out the glass and using tools, heat and form it into shapes. It is an art that seems to be making a come back, and it is taught more these days. Glassblowing is considered a form of alchemy.

I have to say that a lot of people have already posted the comment that I would post. However, I must still say it.

Alchemy is an ancient form of chemistry......well actually, chemistry is a modern form of alchemy.

As for the whole changing lead into gold thing....i really don't believe it's possible.

according to wikipedia encyclopedia it gives this infromation In the history of science, alchemy (Arabic: الخيمياء, al-khimia) refers to both an early form of the investigation of nature and an early philosophical and spiritual discipline, both combining elements of chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, semiotics, mysticism, spiritualism, and art all as parts of one greater force. Alchemy has been practiced in Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persia, India, and China, in Classical Greece and Rome, in the Muslim civilization, and then in Europe up to the 19th century—in a complex network of schools and philosophical systems spanning at least 2500 years.

Alchemy as far as my research goes, was a combination of chemistry and spiritual discipline. In alchemy the goal was to change one element into another or to refine an element using science and carefully regulated amounts of spiritual energy as a catalyst. The main goal of alchemy was not to change lead into gold, that's a myth. The practitioners of alchemy were more interested in making iron and other stronger metals for use as tools. The idea of turning lead into gold didn't come until the practice of alchemy was fading. It was also believed that the weather and agriculture could be influenced and controled with alchemy. The mixng of various chemicals in modern day to get cleaning supplies and such is not alchemy, it is chemistry. alchemy is much more complex. Though, alchemy did lead to modern chemistry.

It's less known the fact that alchemy is not only the origin of modern chemistry, but also a spiritual step.Traces of alchemy were found in all the civilizations. And the mystery of its origins won't be solved soon, because alchemy may be coexistent with the existence of human.Alchemy is a metaphor of the human condition.Alchemy is not profane chemistry. The alchemist improves the nature. The real alchemists didn't run for the "vulgar gold",they're purpose was the philosophers stone, which is a symbol for inner freedom. The alchemist discovers his solitude and he invents his own morals.Practicing alchemy means becoming able to control our emotions, our feelings and even our instincts.

There are two fundamental forms of alchemy:the practical alchemy and the abstract, spiritual one.

The fundamental difference between the modern chemistry and the practical alchemy is the conscious using of the focalized psichic and cosmic energies used in the alchemy field (see *spagiric alchemy*).The Time() in the alchemy (as in magick) is very important. The alchemist must have a great patience because the process of transforming substances takes a long time and effort and often it must be repeated many times.

For the spiritual based alchemy see the exquisite website of Adam McLean!

These two types of alchemy are not separated except for technical comprehension in the mind of a real apprentice.

The lead can be transformed in gold more simple in our days, using the atomic technology ... but is verry unprofitable because of the costs of production. :)

The alchemy has many perils but the risks are not it`s real guardians. The virtue of patience and perseverence and the one`s intelligence, cunning and good will are the true guarantors of the Lady Alchemy`s secrets.

Talking of the formula of life: during the first centuries AD Alexandria was the home of the secret doctrine which promised to convert impure metals into gold, and at the same time to convert human beings into pure sages; and as the crowning achievement of their alchemical efforts, to prepare the universal remedy - the 'Elixir of Life.' The theory was that if the philosopher or alchemist had attained a state of mind, allowing him to master the problems of metallic transformation, he should also be able to use his knowledge in overcoming all diseases.

Current thinking is that alchemists may have used a form of psychokinesis or telekinesis. It is possible that the long and intense concentration of an alchemist on his materials and operations, and the physically exhausting toil of the work, might induce an unusual condition of the mind in which the alchemist was able cause abnormal chemical reactions in his materials.

ALCHEMICAL STAGES

The Nigrido - First alchemical stage, lead black, the earth. Chaos, the massa confuse, a formless mass of soul, spirit, and matter. Dirt, darkness, weakness of spirit (an old man shut up in a cave). All colors are concealed in black, the negative qualities are the most influential. [Soul and spirit separate to form the unio-mortalis, or mental identity. Symbolic death of the individual. The body has lost it’s animating principle]

The Albedo - Second alchemical stage, silver white, water. Soul and spirit recombine with the body. A death-like state, the soul is still waitning, imprisoned in the body. White, the moon.

The Citrines - Third alchemical stage, sulfur yellow, the air. Transition between the white and the golden-red, soul and spirit joins the unus mundus, a oneness in the universe. The yellow represents change, the eagle.

The Rubedo - Fourth alchemical stage, golden-red, fire. Gold, the sun, the masculine principle, red-sulpher. The prima material of the first stage becomes the philosophers stone of the fourth. The macrocosmic prima material is the “serpens mercurii”, the dragon that creates and destroys itself spontaneously. The child of the serpens mercurii (or Tiamat) is the “filius philosophorum” (or son of Tiamat), a hermaphroditic nature, rejected by spirit and identified with evil, having a tendency to compromise, and is the atomic counterpart of Christ (salvator Macrocosmi) – the lower son, just as Christ is the salvator microcosmi, the upper son, and salvation of man, as the salvator macrocosmi is the salvation of god.

The Conjunctio - Sacred marriage of red and white, spirit. Red and white together form a pair of opposites which are united in the “sacred marriage”. All of the elements must be separated and refined from the Nigrido, before they are recombined at the end of the Rubedo.

The Mortificatio - Calcinatio (calcification), Putrefecatio (putrefication), or death of the product of union.

My thoughts on the subject are perhaps clouded by my training and prfession. I am a Chemist.

The ancient practice of Alchemy were, in my opinion, some of the founding discipline which translates into modern science. The Alchemist combined elements or rudementary chemistry, physics, mettalurgy along with spiritual aspects in their studies. Changing one metal into another was widely regarded as their goal, but other discoveries and processes were studied as well.

And, indeed, it is now possible to turn one element into another. However the cost of the nuclear bombardment apparatus and the energy needed to do so would far exceed any potential or practicality. Why spend $20 Million to change an ounce of lead into an ounce of gold for a change in value of $300.00?

I studied for a little while, last year alchemy, and from what I could understand the most is that its a science as many have stated, not a craft, its far from magick, as for using 20 millions $ just to make a 300$ value of gold, well, man will always do things without using common sens or intellegence for science. No offence intended.

Alchemy is the art of transforming lead into gold, as it was in the dark ages. However, it IS appart of magic even though it involves science. Magic its self is everything because it is made of energy. Alchemy is the physical part of magic and has everything to do with our world. With out chemicals nature could never exist.

Alchemy was covered in my studies. I don't know much about chemicals but I do know what it can be used for, but even in that area I am still a novice. I never really decided to take that route.

But I do know for sure, like magic alchemy is a delicate art and science. ^_^

1st congrats Mezkha, please keep me updated with your experiment.

Personally I view Alchemy to be the middle line for the existance of ones personal beliefs & magickal selves combining science & chemitry into it. It is some have called the perfect belief that lies in between. I have studied some in alchemy & I respect it for having the badges of both spirit & mind. Perhaps why there were so many western civilization tributes our lives. I also believe alchemy to be a belief strictedly self taught in order to be really great at doing it with a perfect balance. I respect scienticts & chemists who follow the alchemic belief but alchemy is not just science & chemistry, its also spiritual.

Alchemy is a old Medievil Chemistry, where Alchemists try to turn base metals into gold. They try to use Alchemy to discover the Philosophers stone. A German Alchemist called Hennig Brand was the first to discover a element called Phosphorus in the 16th century, but most Alchemists where amatuers.

Alchemy was and is the art of taking what is inside of you and manipulating and purifying it through external means. You start with the base form of ego (lead), and transform it through many different stages into the gold (the true self).

I`m sorry to disappoint you but the alchemy is a form of Magic not just science.

I consider it superior to science because in the alchemical processes are involved energies unknown to our days materialist science.
One of this element is the psychic energy that is used in the spagiric alchemy. It`s not just about technology, but about some powers of the human spirit and soul.

As I said before the focusing of the human psychic energies is an essential element for the magical act of alchemy.

There were some excellent responses on the outcome of the study of alchemy by academics and philosophers. The question of this thread, however, was the assigning of "good" or "bad" to the "use and or study" of Alchemy.

Good and bad will always be personal calls, often moral or ethical ones...sometimes just productive or time-wasting ones. In this case, we simply don't have enough information to really weigh in on what you're asking. You later tell us that you're attempting to transmute a stone. We neither know how nor why. I'd even suggest that neutral is a plausible value for your experiment.

I'd be interested in knowing why you'd think it might be bad or good.

I have been watching this thread since it first started, and some of the posts are on the money. Though it still very much differs what alchemy is to every individual.

The information I am about to write is not taken from any website, but from years of experiance, study and from my fraternity.

What most may not inform you of, but should...Is that alchemy from day one, was never about changing lead into gold. This was always meant to be an allegory for a much better reason. As some of you may know, alchemy is a progressive science. Much like that of many progressive states, it helps to create a more possitive outlook on ones standing in the creation of their own lives.

A bit of an analogy would be what the masonic fraternity love to call, making good people better. Since alchemy is a very big part of masonry, these two should be mentioned together, but never are simply because no one is "supposed" to talk about masonry.

Alchemy always has been the building block, and foundation of all mankind. Since the early days of the sumerians, to present day. Religion believe it or not, represents the same aspects of the alchemical plan. Just in a differant light and perspective. All of which are the same, no matter what. From the base lead...Which is you, to gold, which is the better you (better known as the higher self to some.)

There is always a simple miss understanding when it comes to the term alchemy, for the fact that since the early days, when the experimenting of "alchemy" frist started, people were intentionally lead to believe that it dealed with metal working. This was to obfuscate the logic of critisized and still outcasted "magikal" importance, since spiritual alchemy would have been known as a form of magik in the first place. Still gotta put the blame for the unknown. Which is why it is still misunderstood.

In closing, no matter how much society argues about what the meaning of alchemy is, it only has one purpose...That purpose is to teach symbolism in the form of allegory to making good things into better and or greater things. That is it, that is all.

" Alchemy is a spiritual discipline"
a changing of your present self into one that is a goal of the perfected you.
smiles and wanders off aimlessly.

I have always been particularly bad at Alchemy in all of its forms, but I am seriously attracted to the Alchemy calenders with those amazing fantasy drawings that are so famous (yet hard to find where I live). Obviously, the deep south of the US considers Alchemy devil worshiping (like everything else).

I think Alchemy is more of an exact science. I think it is up to the person performing Alchemy as to whether it is right to do this or not.

Like with magic or anything else, Alchemy is a personal choice to study or practice. Anything that educates you more is always worth the time and effort to study. Just my thought on it.

Alchemy, as I understand it, was used in medieval times to make something of little value to great value. I don't think that's morally right if you're using it for your own benefit.

Without alchemy how would you be able to work with herbs, oils, and inscences? As long as it has been around and the different forms as their are of alchemy I think that somewhere in time it was also used in majical workings.

The comment about being morally right with the use of alchemy rather offends me. If you are trying to better yourself with alchemy, how can that be morally wrong? I am not understanding this concept. Achemy teaches just morals to better the person. Not extracting them. It hold a certain code of virtue. If this is considered morally wrong, than I must be a "Luciferian".
