I’m referring to fictional vamps.

In movies, the fang marks always seemed too close together. The Nosferatu style with the two sharpened front teeth seemed more practical. When I was a child, I imagined the fangs were hollow with a suctioning action like a straw.

And once the skin is pierced do they suck or lick? Doesn’t seem like you could get very much blood that way, and yet in books the term “drain” is often used.

Which brings me back to my first observation which is that the two fang marks are much too tidy.

To really drain a victim, it seems like the neck would have to be ripped apart (or some other vital part — a femoral artery?) in order for the blood to gush.

How do you think it’s done?

I believe that the two teeth marks were done because of the lack of makeup special effects at the time and it just stuck.

If one was to hit the artery in the neck then one wouldn't necessarily need to rip/tear to get a good flow of blood going. There are some newer vampire films that are using the ripping method for ease of drinking/draining the victim.

you pierce the skin with the teeth, hitting an artery, then remove the teeth and just drink/ suck the blood out.

yes the artery would start shooting blood like a water gun, sort of speak thats why when a person is wounded there...most fo the time...there is no hope...as for the vampire part I beleive in movies it was not like a straw but more like sucking what is shot in the mouth that is placed over the bititng wounds.

Any anatomists or nurses here?

Would the femoral artery do the same, or is it too deep?

I am neither, but was raised by a paramedic.

Like I said before it would be possible to drink from a major artery in the neck...and also any in the forearms...As far as any on the thigh area go I think in most cases there would be too much fat in the way of the artery for piercing by teeth, one could pierce it with something longer and then feed just as well if not better off of it though.

Also with my in depth study of films, special fx and etc I still stick with my opinion that the 2 fang marks are in belief because of hollywood's original conception of the bite.

Well I don't believe they suck, cuz if you pierce an artery it spurts. Therefore they just have to have their mouth over the wound and swallow.
To drain a victim of blood, drinking it all, that would take a LONG time and you'd probably have to pierce multiple arteries.

do it like we do chickens at slaughter time...
Hang them by their feet and go for the neck.. eventually all will drain that way.
enjoy.

There is also the belief that vampires can't feed once the heart stops beating which would be before the victim is entirely without blood.

i think that they gave the movies a half truth to them.what i mean by this is that yes there are to up front fangs but that they couldnt show more fangs.even in werewolf movies back then you only seen to upfront fangs.with the others in the row just being sharp teeth.nowadays you have more technology and more rrom for fangs

As the fat is too thick in certain places above the shoulderline, there is no way that just two teeth marks would work. The full mouth strength would have been used no matter what, thus tearing away a bit of the neck.

As the main artery would be cut, the blood flow would be too tremendous for just a tiny trickle to come out. Since it is a part of the aorta, the usual 6 foot streem of blood would be apparent.

If I were you, I would concentrate not on the neck, but on the inner thigh, high enough to where you bite at almost between the legs. A very seductive spot. Right next to the genetalia. But also very painful. But again, two teeth would not do it. Lest they be extremely sharp.

i speak from experiance here. The fangs of a vampire change not two sets of fangs are alike. The two little holes are more then enouf if you bite the neck right because ther is a major artory on both sides. So traditionaly a vampire will bite were the artery is and lift the teeth and use them to control the flood of the blood as the drink it in.

I'm not a doctor.. but I do play one on TV...

...unfortunately, that TV sometimes loses video but not audio... I think it could be spirits... or a bad ground on the coax...

Regardless, in the traditional Hollywood sense, the tiny little "slightly longer than normal but still able to be contained within the mouth and not look freakish" cannine teeth vampires had would be useless for actually puncturing through the skin and muscle depth needed to reach an artery in the neck, or anywhere else.

Our physical design as humans isn't perfect, but we're not THAT fragile.

The teeth would need to be a lot longer, and sharper...

But I agree on one point - in the traditional sense, I grew up with this notion that the teeth were hollow and the blood would somehow drain from the victim through the teeth, since all that was ever show were two neat little punctures and maybe a trickle of blood.

I think even then I knew, if someone's neck got bitten into enough to hit anything vital, it would be a bloody mess...

I am a paramedic, and yes the femoral artery would do a lot of feeding. Plus it is in such a sensual area. Start with the carodid, but the femoral will lead to more pleasure for both.

In The Hunger, the vamps used a tool, a small knife meant to puncture the vital area, but we never saw DEneuve with her face smeared with blood, nor Bowie, either.

Love and aging were the themes, the bloodsucking was not.

A vamp would have to pretty much tear out the trachea and esophagus to get a good carotid puncture, from the front or the sternoclydomastoid muscle from the side. This would be easier with a larger mouth with fangs and teeth of a wolf or other large predator. Still the smaller mouth of the vamp would be filled with blood from the artery so quickly it would be spurting out all over. Definitely there would be more than two puncture wounds left.
It would take seconds until death of the victim with the severing of the artery, a little longer for the heart to stop beating, and then quite a while for the rest of the blood to be exsanguinated from the victim as there is no blood pressure. Sucking up the rest of the blood in the body, well if it's not close to dawn.......

I have always thought that vampires would bite the neck then suck the blood that came out, and with the bite marks i guess it was just ignored when they were applying the make up effects on the person who was bitten...

Ouch! Between the eyes? I don't even think there's a good vein there.

On the temple, maybe. Very thin people sometimes have visible veins there, some even look knotted and throbby.

Earlobes are full of blood, erect penises . . . the list goes on.

As far as fictional vampires are concerned, I think we all agree that the legendary fang marks are a rip off, or more sucksincly, the neck is not ripped open enough to get any serious amount of blood.

When the earlier movies were made, there was sexual tension but the usual fade to black. The same with the mark of the vampire. This was probably the genesis for Rice’s “the little taste.” Dracula did stretch out his “seduction” of Lucy (or was it Mina?) over several days.

Arterial blood is preferred to the shop worn “jugular vein.”

A few new techniques have captured my imagination: upside-down like a chicken, on the face, the big toe. No one suggested that, but why not? It’s there for the taking.

Several of us like the inner thigh, some of us way more than others. Tools don’t seem popular, although a current poll indicates otherwise.

In the usual VR fashion, the seams between fact and fiction have been blurred. There is the independent opinion that the old way is the best way, and two tiny holes are more than adequate to do the job. I’ve been advised to be courteous to donors and take blood from the spot they prefer, and also to avoid arteries and veins, because after all, only a small amount is required.

Swallowing --- graphic and violent.
Sucking --- not necessary if an artery is tapped.
Licking --- this thread should be renamed Bloodlicking.

Vampire bats would probably be a good metaphor. A lot of fiction appears to at least borrow from nature.

Vampire bats bite a wound and then lick the blood. In fiction and certainly it seems predominant in movies, the vampire bites the wound open (usually on the artery) and then drinks what would be a fairly strong flow of blood.

Again though, as fiction, any possibility can exist in the imagination of an author or screen writer or director.

The reason for the fang marks on the neck are because on the side of the neck lies the corutide (not sure of the correct spelling) artery that can lead to death in a matter of minutes if broken. the fictous vampires would suck the blood from their victims through their fangs that were placed into the corutide artery. If you apply a "Figure 4" choke hold as seen in wrestling on T.V., a person could be knocked unconcious in a little under a minute. It is the main artery that supplies blood to the brain. As long as the heart beats, blood will flow rapidly through that vein. That is why the vampire's victim's were considered drained is because they would use that artery to feed off of for a reason. I hope that my opinion's will help with this matter. Carpe Noctem

zarien85 I'd like to know how you got the blood without breaking the skin, if you'd care to share the specifics.

Natriel, don't make me have to go and watch wrestling to learn about a figure 4.

Is it that it squeezes the carotid and cuts off the oxygen?

FelixFelix, vampire bats are so cool in all their creeping stealth. In full frontal photos, they're so cute, like mini Nosferatu's caught by the paparazzi.

I think they gnaw (knaw? always spell that one wrong) a cow's leg, and then they really go to work licking, licking, licking.

They have a coagulant in their saliva, I think.

In my opinion about obtaining the blood from not breaking the skin...Some hickies do cause blood to protrude, but most of the time when you are sucking skin that hard, your own gums start to bleed giving the appearance that you were sucking your partners blood through the skin.

not all movie vampires bite on the neck and drain the body completely of blood - some just take a little at a time, and i did see one movie where the community of vampires hung their victim upside down and stuck a keg tap in his jugular - lol.

the fact is, hollywood is invariably crap - it can't even depict real historical events and real peoples lives accurately, and when it comes to Sci-Fi and Horror all logic goes straight out the window. can you really see the censors of 1952 allowing to show a scene where chris lee sinks long sharp fangs into the inner thigh of his victim? a couple of bad movies set a standard method, and everyone else followed because that was the tradition.

but maybe it is time we saw movie vampires ignore the neck and bury their head between their victims legs. time it right and they wouldnt even need to use fangs.

Hickies, hmm . . . worn so proudly by the young, covered with lace and silk by others. I say there should be more hickies in vampire literature. Also, more reference to menstrual blood. Now, how could that be handled delicately, yet seductively? Fictional vampires (male and female) have olfactory superpowers. Walking amongst fecund females during all phases of the moon would be a turn-on, turn-off?

I have fairly sharp canines myself, back in my wild drinking days I would bite beer cans open on the sides and suck the beer out through the holes. Not a very fast or effective way to drink this barley beverage, and I would assume the same would be for drinking blood from a neck. Granted, the place you would want to bite would be the jugular...or even better, the femoral artery. However, even in these two places two small holes wouldn't prove as useful in obtaining any amount of blood for something to feed on, in any short period of time. Vampire bats bite and lap up the blood that comes out, but they are small, so it takes much less blood to fill them up. The more effective way for a humanoid life form to obtain blood would be to bite and tear away the skin, veins, etc in the area, for a larger blood flow.

I totally love this topic...in nature, those things that consume blood essentially do it in one of two ways.
1. Puncture the flesh, allow the blood to pool, then lap it up (vampire bat). Effective and quick, does not require vein vs artery.
2. Other animals (mostquitos, ticks, etc) use a specialized hollow structure known as a style to pierce into the flesh. Many inject an anticoagulant and a sort of anesthetic into the wound. Using a sort of hollow chamber within the head region, it can compress the chamber which essentially pumps blood into style. Amazing.

What do I think the fictional vampire does? A combination of the two. Heck, if the muscle structure within the upper mandible was reconfigured, the "fang" could even become retractable. Now wouldn't that be cool! Check out a condition known as hyperdontia (a genetic disorder in which additional teeth grow within the mouth).

Instead of fangs up, fangs down, like a tiger, long ones, but none up, that would make it easyer, since the jaw is the only thing that moves at any process, biting or chewing.

In my vision that would sipp the jugular down my troath, but I would have it all down my neck, and in my undies I guess, but that stilish.

I think the movies did anything they could that would make you believe. There wasn't a lot of special affects back then. Now, you wouldn't see two perfect tooth marks. You would see more blood and gore. But we have the technology to do so. As far as hitting an artery in the neck and draining the blood, it is very possible. And I believe that is what hollywood tried to portray with the fangs and the draining of the blood.

I agree with KingNocternal, use the fangs first to bite, then as valves, if you would, either being inserted, or withdrawen to control the bloodflow from the wounds. Sounds logical, practical, and doable by me. Just my opinion.

We keep on the idea of the flow of blood after the bite, but it still remains unseen in this thread of how such a loss of blood is apparent...But what about the lack of blood around the body? when any artery is hit, there would be too much blood flow at first, some would surely escape your mouth. As the over flow would be imminent.

Most movies, there are no trances of blood around the body at all. Wonder what brought this on for the movies to adapt?

Oh, and the menstral cycle kiss, only a good romance novelist could make that read interesting enough.

Peirce the artery. when you do that, everytime the heart beats the flow will spurt further than in between beats. It makes it easier to drink. ^_^

We have some very finicky bloodsuckers here. My fellow BlackKnights, practical iconoclasts that they are, introduce a leaky hose as a metaphor for a punctured throat, because it would leave a bloody mess unless an instrument was used, and only a small amount taken.

In The Hunger, a small knife was used. I'm reading Already Dead, and the vampires have a handy travel pack blood draw kit.

This might explain why the horror aspect of vamps holds sway in the movies --- movie sets awash with all that colorful blood and no thought for getting the stains out.

Soulshroude, you're a very daring soul. Have you heard the one about the vampire who goes into a bar and orders a cup of hot water?

I would think for a simple feed, the easiest way would to use a razor going with the grain of the muscle. Away from any viens if possible. So in reality, bitting isn't needed, yet can be highly entertaining.

well, since we are talking Hollywood here, why not fangs that retract like on a venemous snake? They "fold" into the top of the snakes mouth and only come out when the snake wants them. In this fashion a "vampire" would be able to conceal extremely long fangs and there fore would be able to penetrate much deeper than just your normal "run of the mill" vampire teeth. Also i have read where the fictional vampires also had something in the saliva that would do several things, 1. prevent coagulation (the drying/hardening) of the blood. 2. As and anesthetic, to prevent any pain and therefore keeping the heart rate at an even keel preventing the upraised heart beat and the proverbial "bleed out". 3. could cause the wound to heal. The last of the 3 would be to conceal any traces that there was a victim. More than likely the vampire wouldn't drain a victim. They need to hide things a little better. How do you explain a corpse with no blood left in it? You don't.

And as far as what arteries? The brachial artery, the one on the inside of the bicep, between the shoulder and elbow, is right beneath the skin and easily as accessible as the Jugular. The femoral is usually buried pretty deep and would take much more to get to. Although it'd probably be a good choice as gravity would help in the feed.

I think the Jugular is the one of choice because it's easier to "control" the victim and/or it's more romantic and easier to conceal during the act. It looks just like you are giving a serious hickey.

I believe the fangs would have to be longer... and sucking could drain the victim of blood if you use a main artery due to the fact that the blood would be pumped out by the heart beat. It continually flows right up until death.

veiledsanity: In the original Dracula, he returns to the virginal Mina over many nights. She sure didn't raise an alarm. In almost all of the older stories, say before 1950-60, there is the slow drain, usually of women, all of whom take great pains to conceal the markings. They can't wait to be alone and respond to his call in the dark.

I would rather enjoy multiple feeds at different times. Draining my doner requires to much post drainage work. You know, cleaning up the mess, disposing of the body (hole or in pieces). Then you gotta find another doner, TO MUCH DAMN WORK. Oh Dracula had it right, multiple feeds.

DarkDruid,
And which theory would that be? i've seen several.

I think that no vamps ever completely drain, it just makes more sense not to have to dispose of a body and cover ups and whatnot. A person can be "foggy" about what just happened to them and there fore keep the "masquerade" going.

Nihonin, I agree, that's what a "survivalist" vamp would do. Vampires may acquire sharpened senses --- sight, sound, smell, taste (maybe touch) but becoming a vampire doesn't make you any smarter than your native intelligence allows.

There would be strata, and for the safety and security of all, messy, murderous vampires would have to be eliminated.

Bloodmother,
You have a point, but the smarter ones would definitely take care of the rogue ones that would draw attention to them. If I were in that situation, I wouldn't want ANYTHING drawing attention to me. Anonymity is the key to survival of a vamp. If they went public, they'd be hunted down.

i am speaking from personal experiance and i have to say that the fangs are not the device used in almost any way to get the blood the fangs and jaw muscles are used to hold the arterie or other blood vessal in a single place ( a clamp if you will) then the vampire having the victom held would perfom a sucking of the surface flesh simmilar to giving a hiccie but far more powerful and may even at times reassert the grip to attain a new hold if movment is occuring
the sucking will draw the blood out of the main vessal thru the artierial wall and also pop the capilaries

and for referance i spent most of my life as a child in the hospital my aunt then worked at
my aunts husband was an army medic during the end stages of the viet-nam war
most of the time from the age of 11+until 18 i was in places were the most interesting book around that dident say suess was an encyclopedia

1. The traditional fictional vampire bites the jugular vein, whereas it would be much more likely that they would bite the carotid artery, drawing the oxygenated blood.

2. I would imagine that part of the vampiric evolution would include hollow fangs capable of creating a suction and thus pulling the blood straight to their system. This would account for the tidy fang marks and lack of blood sprayed everywhere. However, you have to take into account Anne Rice's vampires, who did indeed tear out their "victim's" throats. The only people who they did not do this to were those whom they turned. Just a note.

Alastordarc and VixisPartnerOfTheAntichrist, that's a mouthful --- yes, this is old school which we have established.

Hollow fangs would be expeditious, but where's the drama? And the vampire bat just licks and looks suspicious. Plus, according to many posts here and elsewhere on VR, not that much blood is needed (A. Rice established this).

Rapacious, greedy and self-indulgent vamps would rip out necks. Modern vamps would lay in a blood supply, work their connections.

Honestly I would forego fangs in favour of a blade if I really wanted to drain someone. If it were only fangs I could use though, I would tear, not delicately puncture. This is of course theoretical, killing someone is a bit against my religion:)

Just came across this in The Vampire Book:

reference to another book "The Wise Wound" in which the authors looked at myths of a snake that lived in the moon and bit women, thus bringing on their menstrual flow. . . the intertwined motifs of womb, snake, and moon integral to the vampire myth.

"the two marks usually much closer together than a vampire's fangs . . . appeared to be the bite marks of a viper."

The (usually in older stories) female (and extraordinarily passive) victim often responded to the vampire's bite by first "bleeding and then becoming active and sexual."

So the "vampire functioned like the snake of the old myth, bringing on the flow of blood that initiated a new phase of sexual experience."
