I have heard that there are more likely to be ghosts in a house that has an underground well. I watched it on.. I think it was the discovery channel.... several years ago, and it still pops into my head sometimes. I think they said something about it being most likely if the well if around 450ft deep or more.

I remember seeing them use one of those things that detects wave frequencies and that the ones that normally mean there is a lot of paranormal activety in that area are also found when they wave it over these wells. Including the ones that are sealed up, and when they remove the seal the waves get stronger.

What do you think? Is there a link or is it just some sort of phenomenon?

well if ther eis mroe likely to have ghosts to be in wells thats becuase people have killed people, and shoved them down there LOL....reminds me of RING LOL

wells usually have a guardian spirit over them.evan ordinary ones attract a powerfull kami and then there is holy wells which can cure people.

I guess depending on how old the well is and its location, could it have something to do with someone dying while working on it?

They are interesting, holes descending down into the earth until they reach water, or where water was at some point. Maybe it's not so much ghosts as it is "spirits"....meaning...not ghosts of people, just earthly energies.

I had never put any thought into this before, but no, I don't believe it's any more likely for a ghost to live someplace that has a well as opposed to someplace that does not.

Very interesting theory but I dont believe its more likely that a house be haunted if it has a 450 ft deep well.

I really don't see the conection in simplt having a well and a place being more haunted .Maybe if someone was killed in the well . Other than that why would just it being there bring more spirits

If that is the way the ghost was killed . Or if they were thrown in the well after the fact. Then maybe the house was built over that spot.

Ghost can be in any house. If they died at a well they are more than likely to be there.

I belive that ghosts are everywhere. And u see more of them in areas where there are more potential for mass killings like in war zones

I have never heard of anything like this, but as was said before me, ghosts can be anywhere, for any reason, many unknown to us.

There is a well in the woods behind my house and there's nothing else around it. Every time I go near it I get this really sick nausiated feeling like something bad is going to happen. I've seen weird things around the well, so It's probably just a nerves thing. It looks like it hasn't been used in a long long time, but it's just open filling up with rain water.

Thank you all for your opinions... I have tried many times to think of how there would be a connection but it's hard. I have thought of the earthy energies idea... the best I can come up with that is that energy comes out of the earth more because theres a hole.... and then maybe the ghost likes to use those energies, idk.

There has a ghost in the last house I lived in... we had lived there for a year before I saw the show so I had already come to the conclusion that he was DEFINATLY there and not just my imagination. A few days after watching that show I had to help clean up the basement (I had hardly been down there at all) and I looked down and saw this round thing so I waited untill my mom came back and asked her what is was and she told me it was a well that had been sealed up. That really made me start to wonder...

Ghosts concentrate on the area they died in. so if they died in the well that is where they would be

The earth has sooo many energies floating around above the surface. If there's a giant hole that allows you to go through several millinia of earth, there's bound to be collosal energy coming from that area. Maybe that's what set off the paranormal equiptment?

hmm sound s bit spurious. Most of the hauntings that you hear of appear to be in older properties or on locations which have been inhabited a long time. That would explain the coincidence

To add to what Craig said: If a house has a well, it's a sign that it's an older house because no one really uses wells anymore.

yeah.... the issue with the people dieing in the well is that most of the time the hole is very simply to small to fit a human down... a lot of them the hole is so small that a baby would not be able to fit in it. So I doubt it would be because someone fell down the well.

Maybe it is simply that it is an older property (as there are a lot fewer wells now) and therefore has been exposed to more life (and death)?

in the past many peopl have live and died in many area maybe they were there before the well was and decided to stay or they could have been killed and push in or other spirits like little children could have been because careless parenting or even murder ...

Hmmm... Odd thought here... When I worked in the city office and had to go through old records, it seems that a lot of kids drowned in rain barrels... Now, say, if someone dug a well where the rain barrel had been, maybe it's possible the spirit would haunt the well...

I believe if a person drowned in a well or there was a well dug over or near the spot the person was killed yes they would haunt that place.

you may be right thinking that because they in deep into the earth it give the earthly energies more of am access point or something like that. Or at least it might be something that draws them to that area.

There are spirits everywhere whether it be a well or not, the fact of the matter is that if you are connected to the spirit realm you will see them.
Now whether most wells have them around that can very well be that most spirits are drawn to water even if they did not die by it.

This reminds me of the Amityville story.

I remember a small well in the basement of the house where strange occurrences happened.

I have not seen "the Ring," so I do not know how that ties in.

Some water diviners claim it is ghost that trip the rod that points to water...sadly the whole lot of water diviners are mostly crazy with unreliability for any solid study or attempt to gather information from.

There is also in fighting among them.The Gauge you speak of the instrument used to measure waves...i would like to know what they used and if they varied the reading at all.

well idk about their thing that tests the waves but I was really creeped when I found that well in our basement cuz... I could tell where the ghost was in our house at almost all times. His energy was very easy to sense (very very strong) and I sensed similar energy coming from the well.... but that still could be just earth energy instead. The energies were not identacle however, so.....

I think it has something to do with the magnetic field generated from a deep whole in the ground. That could hold on to a great deal of spiritual energy.

I've never heard of that. Upon reading it I thought it was kinda silly but now that I think about it, that could make sense.
I mean people are buried underground, and have been for awhile...So maybe its the fact that there's this giant hole in the ground, rather than dirt and stuff, so therefore there's more activity?

well as i have said before maybe there is a truth behind alot of childhood deaths in wells that is and maybe the movie the ring does have some truth to it if you read between the lines ...

I think the only connection would be the age as a 'well' is normally associated with older properties

wells attract events.those lucky enough to have one spent alot of time around it.people used to have love meeting at wells and sometimes got murdered.nobody would deliberatly throw something like a dead baby down a well unless they wanted to kill al their family who needed it for their lives as its the only water source.imagine life without water mains and taps.you would have to go to the pump or drink river water.medieval people in ciys drank beer instead.but your own well was a wonderfull thing to have.wells where sometimes spoiled in war time but only if it was a particualry bitter one.

I had never heard that having a well was a particular draw for ghosts. Interesting, but never heard of it.

My first reaction was to just say nope I do not think there could be a link. But i have collected ghost stories for years.. stories of friends.. books.. web pages.. laffs a very bad habit of mine I fear.

And as odd as I find it, after skimming thru the books and personal accounts of people I know .. it actually seems that in alot of stories a well is mentioned.. or a cistern kind of thing.. a hole with water in it. Shrugs I am not sure its a cause effect thing just odd that once I started looking for it I saw it more often. Of course that could be in part that a great deal of my stories are from about 75 to 100 years ago when you pretty much had to have a well if you wanted water.

Ya thats something I noticed to... it seems to be something that you don't even really notice untill you are looking for it, and then it starts popping up just about everwhere.

I am not sure they are sealed.. as much as attracted.. or just it happens on is there... maybe its more of a connection to water. Or the fact wells are holes in the Earth.. shrugs

why would a ghost haunt a well

I've heard some of the old folks here where I life speak of some of the same things about a certain well. Most of them swear it has healing powers and evil cannot go near it.

I am going to say part fluke and part mistaken science for paranomal activity, assuming the well was 450 feet deep, dont you think the mineral content would be high enough to impart some magnetic interferenace? plus the concept of supernatural forces not being able to corss water is superstition that has been generalized to other things. Personally i think if i was a ghost i would do my damndest to haunt a place and make sure i had the peace i needed and a working tv water or no water

See I can't answer your question about the magnetic interferences... thats why I started this thread. Because I couldn't figure anything else out and yes I know that there being a link sounds ridiculus but thats also why I started this thread. It's beacuse I want to know why that stuff happens around wells, even if it's not a ghost. (Or if it is a ghost than I want to find out what the connection is.)

getting rid of a ghost you don't want?... You could tell it to go away or if you can comunicate to it in a diff way tell it you want it to go away that way.

There are other ways to get rid of ghosts but really I don't think it's very nice... I have dealt with a ghost that liked to cause a lot of trouble and try to scare people before. (yes I would call him a poltergeist.) But in the end I just made him know that I was going to be ther and he had to put up with me and that he can't change that. Then I just started being nice to him and talking to him and he started being nice. He would do things liek turn off the ringers on the phone when anyone in the house had a migraine... but only after I made friends with him.

There can be as many critics on what I just said as you want but I lived it and I know it's true. And that that was the ghost that was in the house where I found the sealed up well.

I have heard that too about ghost and natural wells. In fact, we had a house that is now about 140 years old. It was a neat old house, but haunted. It had a natural well right by it. Like, practically under it, it was so close. Certain rock also holds in energy of things that have happened and can make haunted occurances.

It brings up an interesting topic. I guess I never really gave it much thought. Many wells in are very old, depending on when the house was built, and depending on what occurred on the land I guess its a good possibility. The one well that comes to mind to me is the one from Amityville.

The house princesskayd1 speaks of was built on a ledge, and there was bare rock in segments of the basement. Rock ledges and water of all sorts (including underground rivers) are common here.

Dude thats why I didn't like going in the basement... cuz there was this room that was just dirt... not sand but dirt... for a while I kept on thinking something was burried there and it freaked me out untill someone dug around in it and showed me that it was just covering a very large segment of rock... (It still freaked me out even after that though.)

There was rock coming up through the basement floor in each part of the basement. There would be 5 ft spaces of rock rather than cement, because to build this town... they had to blast... a lot.... This town is built on a ledge...

I even showed some of my friends that room with all the dirt in it and it made them shiver.

That is a very good point about the rock. I really didn't think of that. but that is very true, how it does hold alot of energy and water along holds a lot of energy as well.

The house was only about 50-60 some years old... but the ghost was much older than it was... the ghost was there from when the indians still lived in the area. (which would be the 1600's... Because while comunicating with him we found out he is half Cree and half French. So that is the time era he was from.) I don't know why exactly he is where he is... Really I'd like to find out but probably never will.

450 ft is deep. That ain't no neighborhood well. What type of structure are you talking about that is served by such a deep well? I am thinking a town sized place.

Wells here are usually not very deep... so it makes me wonder how accurate that measurement is. (the 450 ft part of what they said.)

I imagine that they are talking about wells that are in towns.... but when I think about it I hear about just as many ghost hauntings by natural wells.. if not more. Maybe it's jsut that when it is a natural well people are more willing to put it out there and just say it... idk.

Yeah I know... my science teacher explained that to me a few years back.. he said that that is somewhat common. He explained it as that you're bound to run into water sooner or later...

There ARE some people out of town that get water out of wells and they say that there are around 250-350 ft deep nromally... I have also heard them say how much the wells creep them out... I have heard them say that they swore they were haunted. That was before I had seen the tv show though so I didn't read anything into it.

but amintyville wasnt a haunting, it was the son going nuts on his whole family and one accomplace theoretically. The family that moved into the defaio home after that claimed it was a demon infested home but there was never much proof except thier assertions.

I have only ever heard of ghosts haunting wells because they have either been murdered and their body dumped down the well or the fell.

Ghosts haunt all different bodies of water, like lakes, creeks, ponds and even the ocean mostly because of drowning's, etc.

I haven't heard of the tie, but I guess anything is possible. Just another mystery to solve hehe.

I tend to believe that "ghosts" will stay to a dwelling rather than a well.

Yes it would... and a lot of places do have a lot of wells... jsut about every house around here that does not live int own has one and some that Do live int own still do. There are a lot of old ones that have been covered up because they are no longer in use.

It took me a long time to even realize that, but it's something I had learned before I had heard that there migt be a connection.

I think if people died in the well the ghosts may stay around it. If there are ghosts in the house, they may remember the well and hang around. As for wells being special, is it any more special than any other hole inthe ground

I have to agree with Madbeau, if there is a ghost in a well (or anywhere else for that matter) it is because that place is associated with someone who has passed there.
