I would like to hear everyones ways of cleansing a home or place as well as protecting it. I would have great interest in any methods that would not use Sage as I am very very allergic to it.
i have heard that if you use sea salt and spread around the out side of your home in a east to west manner the it creates the same effect as casting a circle of protection when your are doing spell work or any other Wiccan rites.
I have heard that one too , thank you as I had forgotten that one.. I think it has its roots in roman culture as salt was very high priced back then and seen as a gift to the gods to use it in such a manor like a sacrifice to the gods and the would protect you. Its also where the spilled table salt gets tossed over your should from too. :)
Here is a good site that covers cleansing and protecting a home.
The Pagan's Path - Cleansing
Thank you I am sure that will help many people sadly once again its requires sage and that would put me in my death bed..
Please everyone keep posting if it wont help me maybe it will help some one else.. !!

The most common way is by smudging. Burning sage as incense and using a feather or fan to push the smoke about the house. Sometimes this is accompanied by a prayer or incantation but the most valuable thing to have is a clear and calm mindset. Projecting that positive emotion and energy.
Does any one know what could be used instead of sage??
I wish I could post something, other than thought,I wouldnt know how to clean a place out.
Of course! Instead of sage you can use Dragon's Blood or sweet grass. You can also either make (or buy in most drug stores) rose water. NOTE: must have rose oil in ingrediants if store bought.
Put the rose oil right in a spray bottle to squirt in every nook and corner of your space.
Vanilla and cinnamin are also quick fixes.
If you need the actual cleansing ritual - please contact me. I would be happy to help.
What about Vinegar? I know I use it for myself, but would it work for cleaning a place.
I found this -
HOME PURIFICATION
Incense: 1 tablespoon pine needles 1 tablespoon juniper 1 tablespoon cedar
Make sure all ingredients are completely dry. Grind ingredients together and burn on charcoal.
Spirits of the corners,
Winds of the quarters,
You who stand watching,
And you who hear my voice,
Guard well my home tonight
Cleansing Spells
thx Oceanne - I'm getting the info for her right now about the allergy for sage from a friend thats a practicing witch...
Did you check out the link??? did you get to the bottom with that 7day cleanse?
SAGE - Benzoin, gum arabic, sandalwood, and frankenscence are good alternatives.
This came from a friend that is a practicing witch.
Place items imbued with protection spells over any entrance or exit to the area you want protected.
I've heard about somthing..about munkswood,
lavender,batsthorn,wolvesbain,pussywillow,
garlic, black satin tied in knots dipped in rose water.
thoes things..I hear help repell..and protect.
I have done and use many of these things.. thank you all so much for your impute.. I hope more is added and even more benefit from this thread!!
Well for me having lavendar growing near the front door of my home works well for protection and since you can't use sage for smuding then maybe some incense of your prefered scent would work for you for cleansing. Sandalwood works for me as well as pachuli.
Lavender is good also you can hang sticks from a rowan tree on your door, like you would a wreath
well sence im not a witch Id have one come to my house and clens it for me..
You can buy a seven day cleasing candle,,,
or you could put oils of protection in your scrubbing water to cleanse.
spreading salt around the outside of the home, around the base of the foundation helps keeps things out. candles, and crystals used in conjunction with ritual should help as well
is there anyway to cleans w/o candles/incense.
my dorm room has been full of negative energy and i am not allowed to burn candles or incense.
Salt in a circle around your house and holy water in each room with a blessing works for me.
I recently asked the same question lol. I thoroughly cleaned my house, from top to bottom; got rid of the clutter and mess and then used salt water in the corners of the room. I lit one whie and one black candle, and asked the spirits to protect my home and family and not let any harm come to them. Good Luck!
Seems all my suggestions already done... sea salt, dragons blood, candles, lavender - all are nice and can work just fine to cleanse instead of sage. I had friends also allergic to sage and that is what they used for themselves and for others' homes.
wow without knowing i use rose oil cinnamon and sage and dragons blood oil... ha! must be that gypsie intuition..man im good...
thanks deamona
Used to be whenever someone got married, someone gave them a gift of a bottle of salt, because as long as you had salt in the house, you would always be protected, and life would never be boring...lol
Sage and salt around the perimeter are the ones I am most familiar with, but blessings by religious persons of any denominations are also useful, so perhaps a wiccan or pagan blessing with may another herb woudl be useful? Maybe lavender, or the like?
Bleach.
Honestly, a good dose of fresh air and sunlight seems to bring in the good mojo.
Crumbs in your front doorway from a cake baked with your own blood is an old celtic protection from witchs (not pagans or wiccans, but the supernatural hags that steal and eat children and cause disease)
What type of sage are you talking about?I know most who do some of these things are Wiccan and blend in some Native American or shamanistic practices. Are you allergic to all from that family? Are you speaking of salvia divinorum when you say sage?
I have never used any cleansing materials. Most of what I learned was in visualization but I have a long history of meditation and visualization techniques.
Hoodoo practitioners have many formulas for cleansings. Some in the psychic circles charge crystals with positive energy to push out the negative. Crystals would probably be the best bet for the person who cannot burn candles, etc. I am no expert on this because I have never really concerned myself with such things as I always shield.
I just would have visulized the home being swept out or you can actually do the act rudimentarily and say a mantra you create that fits the circumstances. Then put a protective shield around your home. Im a spiritualist so I come from a different outlook.
I have friends who smudge but I know there are many ways things could be cleansed.

Sorry for the three posts alike but this site was glitching when I posted because I only put it up once. You have my apologies. Not sure what to think, lol.
Sandal wood chips, Ceder chips. Around the house(inside) and sea salt on outside around house and bathe in lavender also some lavender in the bedroom to heals protect and help rest in the sleep.
blessed salt, holy water,a st benedicts medal cross on your wall.something made of rowan.
I have 3 things I do.
First I get a small white candle and place it on a paper plate and surround it in a ring of rock or pure salt. I let the candle burn down until the wax has covered most of the rock salt. This draws negative energy to the candle and traps it in the salt and wax. Then I bury the whole thing paper plate and all somewhere far away from my home.
The next thing I do is get a smudge stick or about 6 incense sticks. I use a sent that is relaxing and comfortable such as lavender. And I light them and go around the whole house, room to room and let the smoke fill each room making I sure I do corners and under the bed, under the lounge even in cupboards... just waving the sticks around spreading the incense smoke.
The last thing I do is take my ceremonial knife and go to each opening in my home, ever door and window and pray to the goddess to protect my home and using the knife draw a pentagram in the air before the opening. Or in case of a door on the ground before it.
I hope that helps.
I normally use Mr. Clean and 409 for the kitchen and DOW scrubbing bubbles and CLR in the bathroom.
What?!?
Oh...and umm...20 Hail Marys.
You can also use a witches broom to sweep out the negative energies. This tecnique requires a great deal of visualization but it does work. Imagine all the negative energies as a chosen colour. See the colour and take your broom and sweep them out. Then burn some lavender and sandalwood for comfort.
When I am not smudging, this is the one I use, my witches broom is made from Elder.
You can always use wormwood. Hang it over your door and it will not only keep negative spirits etc out, but you will also escape mosquitos and other nasty creepy crawlies.
Feng shui can constitute as a viable method of cleansing and protecting a place as it helps to create harmony within an environment. Additionally, there are also ‘Qi Cleansing Kits’ available on the market that are based on oriental and Taoist traditional cleansing rituals. Feng shui and Taoism believe that ‘qi’ or energy, flows liberally through environments and once it becomes ‘negative’ it should be cleansed and reverted back to good energy.
To eliminate and replace bad energy, the cleansing kit contains ‘sound tools’ based on metal noises that help purify a contaminated qi area. The kit contains a metal bowl and a wooden mallet that provide a balance between the metal and wood as they are the basic feng shui elements. The cleansing kit also provides purifying incenses, traditionally used to cure for bad energy by the Chinese and helps turn bad chi into pure one.
Tibetain Singing Bowl with Mallet
Take quartz crystal and bury them within the corners of your home outside. It will cleanse the energy in and around your home.
You can use other herbs:
***Cedar***
True cedar is of the Thuja and Libocedrus genii. Some Junipers (Juniperus genus) are also called "cedar", thus complicating things some. Some Juniper varieties ARE cleansing herbs, especially J. Monosperma, or Desert White Cedar. But for smudging, the best is Western Red Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and California Incense Cedar (Libocedrus descurrens). Cedar is burnt while praying to the Great Spirit (Usen', the Source--also known to Plains nations as Wakan Tanka) in meditation, and also to bless a house before moving in as is the tradition in the Northwest and Western Canada. It works both as a purifier and as a way to attract good energy in your direction. It is usually available in herb stores in chipped form, which must be sprinkled over a charcoal in a brazier. You can use charcoaled mesquite for this purpose, rather than the commercial charcoal cake.
***Sweetgrass***
Very important to the Sioux and Cherokee nations, its botanical name is Hierochloe Oderata. In these tribes, the sweetgrass is braided like hair braids. It could be burnt by lighting the end of it, or by shaving little bits of it onto charcoal in a brazier. Again, use charcoaled Mesquite to burn it, not pressed charcoal tablets. Sweetgrass is burnt after smudging with sage, to welcome in good influences after the bad had been driven out. Sweetgrass is very rare today, and traditional Plains people have been attempting to protect the last of it. Also Pinon pine needles (used more frequently by the Southwest Teneh, like the Navajo and Apache as well as the Pueblo people and the Zuni) and Copal (used by the Yaqui and in ancient times by the Azteca and the Maya) have similar effect. The three mentioned here are redily available either through gathering yourself or, in the case of copal resin, from any good herb shop.
IF you can stand the smell of Patchouli it's also good for cleaning a place. This is a very strong oil that is a love or hate it. Not only is it good for engery cleaning but it's also an anti-bacterial. Which is nice if you can't take some chemicals.
Rosemary is also good and is less of a strong scent. As an added bonus you can buy it fresh and dry it yourself.
I would begin with seasonal settings for a house, in the summer an open house creates air flow, in the winter close furniture, over sized pillows, having other interactive spaces clear of traffic congestion, in the winter couped up people get frisky, remove all valuable items and store them, we do this usually for seasonal festivity any way, so in spring bring in green.. around (as best you can, pottery gardens, even a chia) fall is time to ready for hibernation.
Sweet grass has been stated a lot but it is a great cleanser, also sprinkle salt at every entryway as possible (yes even the windows). You can also use Jasmine flowers, and blessed water sprinkled on all entryways.
Keep clutter out of high traffic areas in the summer, people are less likely to be tangled up in passing.
ive also heard of people doing a chant and writing above door casings..
they also use crystals while cleansing homes.. then post the crystals in the four corners..
Getting out of the house for a full weekend between seasons, even if it is to another friends house, would always help as well,
Practioners of Santeria cleanse their home with holy water. They go around the whole house with a coconut. This is suppose to trap the evil spirits in the shell. Then it is taken outside far away and cracked, releasing the evil.
MR Stikki is on the right path. Make sure that you dust really well to get out all of the prior inhabitants residue. Dust is from dead skin that sloughs off of your body as your body grows new skin, which is 24/7. Hair as well. As far as protection is concerned, I think that with the grocerly list of techniques listed above, your casa should be like Fort Knox against any demons!
A house party should really make any sprits settled there a little more hip then just dreary, or mishivious.
Dabbler is right, liquid spirits to get rid or stir the ethereal kind.
I am a mild germophobe ...plus I dig clean, straight lines throughout the house.
Taking sage around the house and chanting a few words will help push the bad chi or souls from the house. When I protect a house I take dirt from a grave yard, rose mary, a raven feather and jasmine mix it in a bowel with water, I then go around the house and make the star of power ( were the point is up right, not down) and say " Protect the house and all the live in it, keep those that wish us hard out, lock out the evil and bad, allow the good and kind to enter." I then dump the rest of it on the front, back and sides of the house.
Its worked so far for me.
you can find info on this if you click the links on the left of the page, mostly inside Spells....... should check it out

My adopted mother is a practicing Wiccan, she got her marriage celebrant licence to marry me and my husband last year, and before the ceremony she used sea salt in the four corners of our property and at the windows and doors of our house to protect us from negative energy and harm (namely in the form of my mother-in-law and one of my sisters-in-law). She also placed crystals at the four corners of the property for extra protection. There was a short spell/chant that she performed at each corner as well, although I am unsure of what this was exactly. She also placed salt and crystals around the area we were getting married in, in our garden, in order for the ceremony to take place in a protected area.
Sounds a bit overboard I know, but if you knew my mother-in-law you would understand we needed all the help we could get.
well instead of burning incense you can use cleansing oils i think they work just as good and hey have oil candles that are good too.
I am also highly allergic to sage. We use dragons blood

I've always used brick dust. Putting brickdust below your windows or at your doors keeps out anything intending to do you harm...
Any ideas on as to why that might work? The brick dust?
The clay in the dust ? Any type of brick? or do you think it matters?

Red brick is what my grandmother used and I don't plan on messing up anything that works so.... lol.... I've never tried anything else... I guess I could but I'm afraid to...
Kool.It would be interesting to find out why it is supposed to work.

I could always ask her. I'll find it some way or another and get back to you on it. =^_^=
Another topic that can be researched in so many places and find so many variations of how it is done.
also i believe for protection in a home one can have statues or symbols such as the asians do to keep their homes protected and cleansed.
I have to use something other then sage because my boys are allergic.. So i usually use Dragon's blood and a feather.. Or i will use basically any incent. I was told by a close friend that it doesn't have to be sage it just has to be smokey and you have to think about what you want to do.. I also use a speacial candle in each room of my house for it to..
i have clesnsed my room by putting a in quarz crystal inside a glassbowl and setting it in the middle of the room for a day.once i was finished i looked at the crystal and i could see a cloud as before the crystal was clear
i was told salt on the backdoors form some people in my coven i been haven same trouble did it and it worked no sense of anything since then
i use many methods to cleanse my home i love sage smudge sticks and seasalts everywhere lots of insence and chants
Try using lavender burn an incense in your house all throughout it. That should help you cleanse it and for protecting well I don't do that I protect myself and I use rose quarts.
I agree with lady darkstar on this on salt and holy water work great for me aswell
i do find that alot of the myths of ways of protecting/cleaansing do come from actual facts that were used in old times to keep ones place clean and safe and if you believe in something then surely it should work.
I always do it with a thought..not so much as getting rid of something ,as to simply pushing negative out of the space, and keeping it out.
