An outstanding or conspicuous example: “Hammett's gun went off. The shot was a beauty, just slightly behind the eyes” (Lillian Hellman).
but what is beauty really
beauty means so many things. at times i think beauty means fake. beauty is in the eye of the beholder everyone has there own meaning for it
Fantastic Lenore you are correct Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, beauty to me is she who searches for her life and her place in it not just some bimbo who crams make up on her face and walks out side with her chest almost coming out... please i am stronger than most men i will admit for i am a man it is "attractive" but it is most definetly NOT beauty, i am not easily seduced by sex...
i'd have to agree with the others beauty in the eye of the beholder , to me there are two kind of beauty on the outside and beauty on the inside.
true with the beauty on the inside and the out. i would rather be with someone who has beauty on the inside then the outside. sure the outside is great but its not all about looks its about who they are and how they think and much more.
ITS ALL ABOUT THE OUTSIDE! YA YA YA!!! SIKE SIKE SIKE SIKE PLZ DONT HATE ME SIKE! although the outside can lure you the inside is the ultimate reason for you to stay or run like thier no tommorow!
I agree with Sushi, I'd be a liar if I said that looks don't matter... but it's what's on the inside that keeps you for the long run.
i would also like to be with someone who has beauty on the inside then the out....the inner has so much more to offer .... the outsides fade insides for ever.... + lets faces it how we think we look and how others think is so much different..... i have more inner beauty to myself... but some might so i'm a cold person just like also beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... jsut like meny other things
thats so true ellie. and some people say that about me too dont worry hehe
lol thanx, people tell me that alot i dont really see it but i guess i am
Beauty varies, as it turely is in the eye of the beholder. Yes,by definition it is the combination of qualities that delights the sences or appeals to the mind. I find it to be rare yet all tooo common...I think the word stands for what is truely extraordinary to you, however subtle or radiant it is able to catch and keep your attention, leaving you at a loss for words. I tend to find beauty in words as well as actions rather than in looks... and scientifically speaking it is said that all beauty really is -when it comes to looks- is mathmatical, and geometrical. It has to do with pleasing features that have symmetry, and it also lies in patterns.~discovery channel
external beauty is fleeting. what is important is the beauty within; what is contained within one's self.
I thought about this all day after seeing the thread this morning.
Someone who is beautiful to me is someone who has made a positive impact in my life by virtue of their kindness / understanding / (insert a positive trait here.) I am ashamed to say that often I let the physical shell get in the way, and as a result, I have missed out on the experience of meeting many beautiful people.
agreeing, that beauty, like art, and truth, is in the eye of the beholder.
my tastes range.....im both eclectic and simple in my fondness of beauty. i cannot satiate my perquisition of beauty. *smile* ♥
The greatest myth promulgated in modern times is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While on the one hand art and music are at the mercy of a materialistic determinism (modernism), the arts become non-existent on the other, because a painting by Monet would be no better than a teenager's graffiti on the wall of a subway (postmodernism). As modern philosophers wrangle over the definition of art, most people instinctively believe that art is connected with whatever is beautiful. What the philosophers fail to understand is that beauty is not a quality; therefore, it falls outside of the realm of the intellect, thereby defying logic and making most philosophical conclusions about art hopelessly deficient. Beauty is an effect that touches the emotions; thus, art is an experience that affects the soul, not an argument that satisfies the mind.
~robert w watson
yay philosophy class is paying off! but i think that true beauty is a very relative term because of the fact that everyones opinoins are different and every person on this earth is thought of as beautiful by someone.
Beauty is different for different people and situations. I have seen people that physically I have found beautiful, but they were rotten on the inside. No can do. Some of my best friends ever had some of the most beautiful souls I have ever seen, but maybe not what some people would call beautiful on the outside. I dont mind the eye candy, I just know it is superficial.
In one sence, Beauty is what is visually aesthetic. However, in a broader sence, it is anything that can be pleasing, from personality to art.
Has anyone else noticed that personality sometimes takes physical features? Usually I can tell who has inner beauty and who is wretched by a look, and I have done so with very high accuracy.
Beauty comes in so many forms...I don't feel there is one true definition of beauty..
I feel true beauty is being comfortable in your own skin, no matter what others say...
I'm real sick and tired of people thinking they have the right to break a person into thinking they are not beautiful. Every living being has beauty in them somewhere, I don't care what anyone says.
Beauty to me is a woman who is 200 lbs and will still feel sexy in a little black dress, or a 60 year old woman whose face is untouched my plastic surgery, and each wrinkle and crease is displayed proudly. Or someone who has lived through absolute Hell and fought their way through it.
I can find beauty in anyone..I feel ugliness only lies within a person's actions. Not once have I ever called a person ugly because of their looks alone, the only time's have been over something personality or action-related. I don't think it's right to call a person ugly for their looks alone, I just feel it's extremely wrong because it leads to people feeling they have to change their appearance just to feel they can hold their head up without a person having something nasty to say about their looks..
Beauty is in the eyes of everyone. Everyone sees beauty differently. I can see it in the moon and stars, in the way a person positions themself just right or a pose that is just striking, and it is also the simple things in life that are beautiful.
A person can be beautiful on the outside but as soon as they open thier mouth, they are the ugliest creature ever seen. It all depends on the perception of the holders eye.
Hmm, I tend to think of beauty on the same lines as love. It cannot be defined. When you feel it it's there. I can't explain things well but that's just how I am. It seems like the things in my life that I've tried to explain loose meaning in the end.
I have to agree with Morrigon here : hmm, I tend to think of beauty on the same lines as love. It cannot be defined. When you feel it it's there.
As it's been said before what is beautiful to one person will not be to another. Just as in the beauty inside a person and outside. A person may look in apperance to be the ugliest creature you have ever laid your eyes on, but on the inside maybe the most wonderful of all beings
Ie. Kind of like the whole story of Beauty and the Beast, or The Ugly Duckling or many other stories like these....
Like everyone here I belive that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For even if I see something beautful inside someone you may may not see it. I think it has some to do with how we were raised and what life has brought to us. I've been torn down many times for my looks alone. There are times where I feel that I don't care what others think how I look, but on the other hand I also have those days were little thinge effect me.
all is beatyfull......i look on the inside
of every one i meet...9 times out of
10 peoples beauty is wonderful
no matter what the outside looks like..
nobody is ugly in my eyes..and all
be good within....which lies all
hope within also..
*for this i guess is my little poem*
i hope you catch my meaning...
Beauty is... a state of mind, you are beautiful only if you think you are.
Beauty, whether it be how someone looks, how someone thinks, music, nature, etc. is that which brings light into what would be a wretched dark lonely abyss of a world without it.
'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder', it is perception. Everything is perception. One person could look at something and find it alluring and beautiful, another could look at the same thing and find it hideous and wrong. Think about it. Everything goes by the way you percieve it.
I think Beauty can't be described. It varies by being to being. And it isn't simply the looks of somebody or something. It is the thing that somehow motivates You even if You don't know it. Because every feeling can have it's own beauty... ...but it can go far...
I think the 'beautiful' thing about beauty is that everything can be beautiful to anyone, just depending what you want to find beauty in.
I expect your bank balance statement in the mail Jason ... with the heart condition test results for my lawyers review.
Beauty comes from within and in my eyes u cannot define beauty cuz everyone sees different things as beautiful, beauty is in the eye of its beholder...
*giggles*
Moreish you said it ..lol
There ain't no such thing as an ugly rich guy....hehe
God damn.. i'm a mere poor peasant.... looks like i'll be living the single life, till my dying days...
Beauty comes from within.. i have dated so called 'stunnig women' and they were ugly inside.. real nasty... So i am attracted to the beauty of which makes up the person.. and not their make-up... Also what happens if the beholder is blind?
do since its in the eyes of the beholder then does that mean that technically u cant really define beauty so there is no set way to say to somebody "no u are not beautiful ur ugly"? is that what yall are saying or are there things that there is no way a certain thing can contain ne kind of beauty? not that i would say that to somebody but i was just wondering if thats what ur saying?
there is no such thing as beauty because it a figment of ower imagination , its what there personality is like and how they feel not what they look like that is a stupid and selfish way to think of it
this entire thread reminds me of a horrible little saying
"beauty is skin deep, but ugly is to the bone"
I suppose there is a way to define subjective beauty....
just taking a picture and passing about to people and counting how many people like what they see.....
but if you take the spirit of the word instead of it's litteral meaning you'd have to sit and talk to the person to determine their beauty....
It's like genrous used to mean of noble bearing or breeding... now it means representing the best in humanity tho that meaning is being deluded too...
That all being said... a cup of coffee and a long chat seem to be the best way to find out if the beauty is just window blinds and aluminum siding or if it goes to the bone
I don't blame those born into affluence for being spoiled.
I don't blame crack babies for being drug addicts.
I don't blame retards for being stupid.
I don't blame those born beautiful for being... Beautiful.
beauty is in my mind the true person.theres alot of differant people out there if you would slow down keep an open mind and not judge them from the outside you would find beauty in everything and everyone.
some peoples idea of beauty is physical and to the few beauty lies on whats on the inside, wat makes a person who they are.
some people just judge by looks (i hate people like that)
to my supprise, there are many people that accept u for who and what u are,
i also agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I think beauty is a balance of what is both inside and out. I'm still not sure what the exact definition is because I don't really think there should be. But I think beauty, like everything else, can be a balance
BEAUTY IS BUT IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER. the concept of beauty this day and age makes me sick to my stomach. all those scantily clad stick thin models. if you looked at past art in our history, women sho used to be called beautiful are now called fat, ugly... ect.. it saddens me thouroughly. i am big boned but i believe i am beauty. this world needs to cut the crap and remember everyone is beauty. voluptuous women rock also!!!! yeah
!!!!!!!
"V"""V"
The concept of beauty is largely influenced by the media. What popular culture deems beautiful is often what is accepted by society. Granted, there are individuals who ostracize themselves from such confinements and who make their own assumptions as to what they believe is beautiful. Placing barriers on beauty is like imprisoning a child -- it does not provide a spectrum for growth.
Bueaty? Thats us, thats you when you look in the mirror, thats all.
i also agree with a lot of the others, inner beauty means the most in the end, the outside beauty is just a plus for some, outside beauty is just to lure you in, and then once you get to know the person you can tell if they r truely beautiful, in the ways you are looking for
The is one learned man whose philosophy I studied at one stage in my life, and this is what he says about 'beauty' Thought I would share it with you if anyone is interested. :)
On Beauty
(An excerpt from "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran)
And a poet said,, Speak to us of Beauty.
And he answered:
Where shall you seek beauty, and how
shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?
And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?
The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.
Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."
And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread.
Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."
The tired and the weary say, "beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.
Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."
But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains,
And with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."
At night the watchmen of the city say,
"Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."
And at noontide the toilers and the wayfarers say,
"we have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."
In winter say the snow-bound,
"She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."
And in the summer heat the reapers say,
"We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."
All these things have you said of beauty.
Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.
It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes
and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and your are the mirror.
i think beuty is a thing that could not be definied easily every one has a deferent view in what is beautyit's all depending the person and what they think about it
I think beauty is everything is this world. And every single person is beautiful in their own way.
Emmy, your teacher's ideas of beauty are moving; thankyou for sharing them.
Beauty is subjective thing....
All of us see it with different eyes...
quoting from my own profile cos i can't think of any other way of putting it:
"i live for beauty. not in the superficial sense. obviously i like looking at pretty things... who doesn't? but that's not what i mean by beauty. beauty for me is the magic of life, the dream that is reality. i'm a dreamer and whatever the situation i'll look for the beauty in it. mind you that doesn't necessarily mean the bright side!"
beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. when you look at something, try to see what pleases you in it, and therein will lie it's beauty.
beauty is what happens when something is just right to you, or really really close to being just right.
Forgive my pathetic responce to this . . . . . . . . Beauty to me is the inner quality that makes something or some one intrueging. It is the inner level of purpose and the way we appriciate what we see in it/ or them. Im not really sure how to make that see more readible and more understandible . . . . can some else translate it for me?
OOO I get to be lazy on this one... lenoresprettycorpse said it all!
Beauty is an essence which is different for all of us. I dont beleive it is ever fake though.
i think beauty is something that u see in ur self and in other people something that u like wbout them or u
Beauty is showing your inner being to the world
not
what the magazines say is beauty
The true definition of Beauty is PHI - the dimensions of everything on earth created.
Meaning in a little nut shell, as I can write volumes on this subject, It's balance and symetry.
The more similar, for example in humans, both sides of the face match the more attractive they appear to us.
Ultimatly, you don't realise it, but every single person views another face in the same fashion. It's not a state of mind, but natural.
