"WARNING", this is going to be a long post. Most of you all know who Michelle Bellenger is. And I want to say that I am delighted to have her in our community. Herbooks have been such a great help for those still learning. And as sher always says dont take everything she says as the only answer. Everything she writes about is based on her own experience, and her research. I dont know if any of you are familiar with her book sacred hunger. I find some passages in there so helpful and insightful. I am going to post an entry from her book based on vampires and sunlight so as to share with all of you.
Teachings: Vampires and Sunlight

This is an eearly version of an article that appears in Michelle Belanger's 2005 release, Sacred Hunger that addresses one of the classic Hollywood stereotypes of vampirism ... and explains why it might be true.
It’s straight out of every cheesy vampire movie you’ve ever seen: the vampire gets up, walks out into a room flooded with light, and if he doesn’t burst into flames, at the very least he winces and puts on a pair of sunglasses. It’s an inescapable stereotype: vampires can’t stand bright light. Now, it is of course silly to presume that real vampires, when exposed to sunlight, will go up in flames and be reduced to ash. As far as I’m aware, that belief was created entirely by Hollywood and has no basis in vampire folklore whatsoever. Stoker had Dracula running around London during the day – he just made it clear that Dracula’s powers were weakened when the sun was up. Most of the vampires in folklore need the help of a good, roaring pyre to be reduced to ash, although folklorically speaking most of the old myths agree that vampires prefer the night for their predations and can rarely be caught out of their coffins after sunrise.
But that’s the undead – the myth that has grown up over the ages. Folklore might have a grain of truth to it, but most of it is just nonsense, right? After all, real vampires sleep in beds just like ordinary folk, and it should follow that real, living vampires shouldn’t have too much trouble walking around at noon. But there is the uncomfortable reality that sunlight has some kind of effect on us that most of us cannot explain.
I wrestled with this one for quite a while. I tried to convince myself that it was all just in my head and all those uncomfortable physical reactions I was having were purely psychosomatic delusions. I even valiantly tried swearing off my sunglasses on a family trip to Arizona. But it didn’t take much of the brutal desert sun to convince me that, psychosomatic or not, I was still completely unable to see unless I had something to shade my eyes. And that’s to say nothing of the headache, nausea, and distressingly rapid sunburn.
But then someone made an off-hand observation about sunlight and suddenly it all made sense. The answer was so simple and so obvious that I was amazed that it hadn’t occurred to me before. Sunlight is radiation. It’s not just visible light. It’s heat and ultraviolet rays and a whole lot of other things we can’t properly see all pounding down on us. Because of our metaphysical natures, we are highly sensitive to all forms of energy. We react and interact with it in strange ways. How many of us have walked by a television or radio only to have the reception fuzz out in our presence? When we move, whatever disturbance we were causing with the radio waves settles down and the reception clears up again. How many of us have accidentally blown out lightbulbs or other electrical appliances with our mere presence? So why wouldn’t we have an unusual reaction to sunlight as well?
It’s so basic. Sunlight is energy. Metaphysically speaking, it’s solar chi. Now, plants are probably the organisms that are best equipped to process solar chi, but most people like feeling the sun warming them as well. It’s healthy for them to get a few rays once in a while. Vampires, as discussed earlier, are somewhat disconnected from the ordinary scheme of things. Although we’re as human as everyone else physically, something about our spiritual natures makes it almost impossible to process solar chi in any kind of positive fashion. It’s too much.
It’s too something, because nearly every vampire I have ever spoken with has had about the same complaints regarding sunlight: it hurts their eyes. Prolonged exposure makes them dizzy, nauseous, and weak. The warmth of the sun on their skin does not feel pleasant; it feels prickly, uncomfortable and very, very hot. They burn very easily and in the end have all the symptoms of heat exhaustion or sunstroke after only ten or fifteen minutes outside. Sometimes the reactions are more severe, sometimes they’re a bit more bearable, but generally speaking, the vampires who are most sensitive to energy have the most extreme reactions.
Sunlight is radiation. These days, with the ozone layer being depleted so rapidly, the rays that come through to us are pretty unhealthy. Sunlight is getting to be too much even for ordinary people to bear, as can be evidenced by the rising numbers of cases of skin cancer each year. Most ordinary people still don’t feel anything negative in the sunlight streaming down on them, but that’s because they’re so divorced from their subtle senses. When we go out into direct sunlight, our bodies are telling us something. Messages like that are not idle ones. Sunlight is harmful. We’re hypersensitive to that harm. We just have to accept that and learn to live with it.
--Michelle Belanger
That's a really intrestng point, I never thought of why sunlight made me uncomfortable, and that's one of the best explanations I've heard yet.
it really is kinda funny too. Everyone I talk to in the community are or seem to be affected by the sun in one way or another. Some of us have a hard time without sunblock and sun glasses. Forme it is not just the sun, I am affected by bright light reguardless. My husband seems to be more fatigued during the daytime. Some people are so affected by it they burn. And I appreciate and agree with Michelle's theory.
I like Michelles theory but you cannot go by me because I have a disease that does not let me out in the sun without literally blistering and getting 3rd degree burns, stress will also cause this for me.. I was a sun worshipper at one time though.. Never again..
Frankie, Sorry to hear about your ailment. having a medical condition such as yours isnto much fun at all. My sympathy's!
I'm sorry to break this to you, but we have this listed in the Vampire Database already...
I know that there is an extensive thread on it too, but, I don't know whether it was closed for length.
:)
interesting...sorry to hear of your illness also....try using the vitamin papiya(?) It is a natural deterant for sunburns
Good to know it is in the vampire database.. A refresher is always good too.. Thank you
i was just wondering that after watching interwiew with a vampire for the thousandth time......it explains a lot! thanks for the info
Everyone of my eyeglasses are tinted to some degree. And I have been known not to even see the sun in weeks. Also never met any vamps with a tan. :)
No wonder.
Sunlight maladies are real...many people are aflicted by them....I dont have it, but, enjoy the coolness of the darkenss...
Very interesting info. I've alway had quite the aversion to sunlight myself.
I have posted this in the other thread on the subject. Although I'm not a vampire that I'm aware of I do have issues with the sun. The requirement for shades, and sun burning in no time at all being but a few.
There is however a genetic dis order that I don't belive I mentioned previouslly. It's known as xeroderma pigmintosum. People with xp are unable to repair damage doe to their cells by uv light, which a healthy persons body is doing constantlly. Also the effects are cumlative, meaning that a minute a day for 180 days is the same as sitting out in the sun for three hours on end for them.
They are highlly suseptible to cancers and dementai brought on by uv damage.
I wonder if individuals in years past were thought vampires because of this condition.
THey could easaly find some spell, potion, or charm to alow them to survive in sun light.
Sunlight is necessary for life. If there was no sun, there would be no life. Of course it can be harmful, too. If exposed to it for too long or at doses which our body is not accustomed to. Now I believe that the sensitivity to sunlight or how we react on it is different to each and everyone of us. Just being overly sensitive to sunlight does not make you a vampire. And vice versa.
Exactly. I am not a vampire, but after I feed on a good amount of energy, I feel hurt by the sun. It's because of the heightened sensitivity.
Eviladam,
In the past that disease was linked to vampirism, of course that myth has been done away with now by modern science.. That is not the condition I suffer from though, mine is also autoimmune though and not contagious.. Although interestingly enough, this disease in brazil, which it is known as a different name can be caused my a black fly bite drawing blood from you...
w/o shades of sum sort it kill my eyes and i get major migrains but yet i luv the heat that it gives me
Fantastic replies. And yes I believe giving credit where it is due should be relevant. I dont belive I saw the other posts on the subject. But for me personally and for this thread I felt it needed to brought back up for those that POst constantly the same questions. I find it good to relieve the inquisition by offering the answer before the question becomes familiar. There are psychological disorders and physical disorders accompanied by the Ultra violet Rays of sunlight... And I find it metaphysically relative to the vampire community.. this here post.. due to the fact I have not met anyone yet with our condition who does not have an ailment with reguards to the sun. I find it stimulating and fascinating research wise.
wow....i always wondered why i hated the sun ......even certains lights effect me......they hurt my eyes as much as the sun does.......I tend to be very tired and out of it during the day then fill up with life once the sun goes down
For the last response which was somewhat off topic.. There is no charm or spell to cure sun ailments. It is due to naural physicique. And Magick is based arouns the elements to a certain degree. But not for selfish manipulation. And I know alot of vamps that associate with wiccans.. Ahem.. What am I?
Very interesting info. I've alway had quite the aversion to sunlight myself. I DON'T LIKE THE SUN THAT MUCH....
i dont really care for the sun that much
it might be better if it was all dark
and very inerseting ponits
The problem I have with the sun is a bit different than you all have spoke of. My eyes dont contract the way most people do. So bright light of any kind tends to give me a headache. On the good side I have 20/15 vision.
the sunlight never started to bother me till a month ago...it started by just making me eyes watered then now they burn and my skin is getting very sencetive...and now i know why thanks for the explination
It's a growing trend that even after a 1/2 hour of sunlight my skin gets red. I always blame it on being a fair-skinned Scotswoman. :D
Sunlight does hurt the eyes and the rest of the body as well it weakens you. I know whenever i'm in the sun I don't feel right and if it's really bright I can't go out without sunglass or some sort of hat covering my eyes.
I totally agree with that
as soon as I'm in the sun I feel zapped of any energy, I get grouchy and seek the shade quickly
I'm much happier after the sun departs for the day
Ahhh, I did not know that is why sunlight had the affect it does, thank u for posting a piece from her book...will have to look for it.
Well I don't like the bright sun, too. But being out on a sunny summer day won't kill me either. I just guess it would be hard for me to live in a country where the sun burns all day...
I agree with that Michen.. For those where the sun burns all day I suggest hooded clothing, strong sunglasses, and highest SPF. LOL. For me it is not just the sun. Bright light in general affects me.
I have no idea who this person is but just like I her as I read think that is just , vampires liked to venture at night and sleep in or during day time for doing this it would be harder to spot them and attack them. This is after what I read not sure if it really goes with the thread though it was really long, couln't read it all.
I agree with that statement. Sunlight bothers me every time I am expossed to it. I get headachs and my skin starts to hurt.
I would have to say that you are correct and I have never known this...I knew there was a reason for weakness but not that the sun could have that much power to drain..Very interesting and educational...Thank you for your smarts...
sunlight doesnt do anything to vampires.............crosses just piss us off......not alll of us drink blood..........
it was an interesting reading, i had no clue that sun could have such an effect to everything...hmm... i was never keen on sunlight... even more now :D
vampires and none vampires are both affected by the sunlight its not just a vampire thing
I don't really like the sunlight myself, for the simple fact that it really hurts my eyes... And about the crosses thing, well I don't like them at all. I'm so dark inside that if I touch one for a certain amount of time it does have a tendancy to burn a bit...
I like that point, sunlight and I do not get along and never have. I have to wear a lot of clothes to cover my skin if I go out. Dark glasses just to see........
this really is a valid topic from what i see.... the thing is i highly doubt that most would really make much of a connection between sunlight specifically and their problems other than ones that present quickly like headaches and sunburns
personally seem to not get sunburned but i do get a rash sometime if i am in the sun more than usual and also i have always gotten bad headaches when in sunlight too much (but wearing sunglasses drives me nuts with the little frames at tge edges if my vision so i just try to avoid going out into the sun for very long on bright sunny days) lol i also do tend to dehydrate FAST when out in the sun and to get heat strock easily .. though in reality if i stay out of the sun i can go several days on VERY little water without much in negative effects
nothing happens to me accept my eyes burn a little... i think that the movies are making it out to be a bigger deal then it really is...most vampires i know dont burst into dust when they go out into the light
The sunlight can be annoying to me especially when its near my eyes, that's why I always have the blinds down in my home.
I believe hollywood has seperated fact from fiction when it comes to vampyres. Surely they can't stand the sun but that doesn't mean they'll burst into flames and turn to ashes either. So far I haven't seen one vampyre movie they made where this event hasn't happened.
lol. if you REALLY want to block the sun try thick heavy draperies or if you want to save money (like me lol) just hang a blanket over the windows.... though originally i did that so i could sleep better durring the day when i worked night shift
I was always a sun worshipper, I loved the sun until this disease hit me.. MOST people cannot take the sun. I really dont think it has anything to do with vampirism at all. Its just your makeup. Genetics per say. If I could stay in the sun all day, I would. To everyone that hates the sun or whom cannot be out in the sun, be thankful, its not good for you anyway in long lengths..
Well its not just the sun I can't stand, its also the heat. I prefer nightime over day when I go out.
thanks for the info...and sorry to hear about the sickness
I can take it or leave it myself...only time that sunlight really bothers me is when I'm driving and I have to put on sunglasses at 5 am...people look at you like your either hungover or just odd...which is fine because I'm usually both that early in the day
god i hate the sun the way it burns my eyes in an instant like someone is gouging them out with a spoon
sunlight sucks but it keeps the mortals happy so be it. hmmm blood.
I go into the sun and I am comfortable with it...But I do not feed in the sunlight...
This is interesting..I have felt drained, now that I think of it..Everytime..You learn something new everyday..Thank you for posting this or I would have never known...
i get tired all the time while i am out in the sunlight...a couple times i have fainted...hm...thanx for posting this...
Interesting post, enjoyed reading it. I also had fun reading everyone elses thoughts. I just don't like the day time. Sun hurts my eyes mainly. Other then that i never really give it much thought.
the vamps i know have gotten me into a sleep routine where i actually *just* miss the daytime entirely. not too bad, the sun gives me headaches, just like a lot of you have said too.
i see what you mean, it does seem to make sence that we are more sencitive to sun light
my eyes are so sensitive I wear sunglasses on a heavilyovercast day. My skin is so sensitive if i go out at midday in the summer I can get second degree burns(blisters) in as little as 15min. That article does pose an interesting theory would be hard to prove or disprove.
Thanks to everyone for posting their comments.. but I want to remind everyone give their appreciation to Michelle Bellenger. this is her article. and One that I find metaphysically stimulating.
interesting article...sort of makes sense. gotta read more of her articles for sure
I would like to say a few words of hope for those who do not like the sun at all. I think and it is logical that aside from going out at night or using blockings such as sunglasses and hoodies, i think that vampires will evolve. All life evolves. This is a weakness that the body knows it needs to overcome. The sun does not affect me save for the inability to feed when I am out and about. I however am gifted with a thick skin of my ancestory. I just happen to have the unique gene of vamprirism. And that tells me that we may be evlolving already. Developing ways to move in sunlight, we already figured out how to survive off of energy supplements, blood, mentality, the elements. I hope this come as comfort to some who have real problems with sun.
Then how do you explain the headaches? How do you explain the instant sunburns and the 2nd degree burns? How do you explain the need for sunglasses? How do you explain the drain of energy or the inability to feed? How do explain away everything that these people just said? You dont get 2nd degree burns from ocean water. You dont get headaches from wind. You dont need sunglasses for looking at plants.
I get 2nd degree burns and worse from the sun but those are dermatological diseases. Most people need to wear sun glasses outside, your eyes werent made to take the sunlight. Fatigue is also quite common in the summer time. Heat makes you want to sleep. All of these things can have logical answers to them. I really dont believe that an intolerance to the sun comes from being a vampire.
Ok, maybe for those of you who look for explainations in everything. Find out why and how. But how do explain vampirism and sunlight? How do you explain the fact that almost everyone that claims vampirism is affect by sunlight more so than most people? Isn't there a connection there? Why doesn't it affect the Jews, or Hispanics or gays(no offense, in any of those, intended)?
I am not looking to explain everything away, but where did the Jews, hispanics and gays come from ?? I am confused about that one... Its a known fact that hispanics and african americans can take the sun better than caucations can.. he pigment in their skin being the reason.. but I know jewish people and gays that have problems in the sun as well. If this was all linked to vampires I guess what you are saying is that there are no gay or jewish vampires then ?? Did I misread something..
No, I didn't spell it out very well. I was merely commenting that if it can all be explained by science or what not, then why is it characteristic of vampires. I was trying to keep the thread topic while trying to say that I think sensitivity to sunlight has something to do with our being vampiric as opposed to what another member said about it not being related. I apologize for the confusion.
I get burned easily by the sun and so I just stay out of it entirely, but, oddly enough, the sun and other bright light make me feel fatigued and tired. I usually sleep during the day because of it. After reading the first post, I now wonder if it is really the sun's radiation that originally caused the fatigue and that my feeling tired after being in bright light is a conditioned response of some kind.
(Sorry. Just musing out loud.)
Dont get me wrong.. I get fatigued in the sun as well. If it is real hot outside, I want to sleep. Even though I love being outdoors in the summertime.. I always wear sunglasses because my eyes kill me, sometimes at night I wear them because the bright lights kill them. Its just that you wish you knew where it all stemmed from, thats all..
good thread and interesting at that ...i normaly put sunglasses on the sun hurts my eyes the most and sometimes if im in it for too long i feel sick but its nothign i cnat stand for a short time lol
very well put and it makes a lot of sense as well. i've always been overly sensitive in all 6 senses (yes i said 6 on purpose). the boyfriend is always amazed when i can smell his cologne the second he walks into the house and i'm clear on the other side. i always tell him which one he's got on from that far away, he gets a kick out of it.
the only sense that isn't "extra" is my sight. both of my parents were legally blind without glasses by the age of 16. i was lucky enough that i can still function without mine at 27 in the daytime, but at night i'm totally blind without my glasses. perhaps it's the increase in the other senses that kept me from being as impared as my parents, or perhaps it's the extent of the other 5 senses that has cause the need for a loss in vision as compensation?
i love questions that cause more questions!
that's a good question for which i don't have an answer but i'm not one for the sun cuase it hurts me when i go outdoors during the day
(Just more musings)
I often wonder if people, and some vampires may be guilty of this, misinterpret their nocturnal natures as an aversion to the light. The classic example is bats. They can out into the light, they don't necessarily hate going out, but it's not their element if you will. Bats are extremely near-sighted and so light doesn't really help them much. It really is more of a distraction and so night is better suited to them. If you don't need light, then what's the point of be diurnality?
But people do act differently during the day than at night. One could chock it up to psychosomatic responses, or a preconceived notion, but it seems similar to all people across all cultures regardless of how they view the world. Hmm...
In any case, these are just musings meant to do nothing more than direct my questioning.
Since there are no medical or scientific organizations that recognize a societal group called "vampires", no one can say that sensitivity to sunlight is most directly attributed to "vampires".
Every ethnic group, and those not indiginous to the area in which they now live, are going to have varying levels of tolerance to the sun. I live in Northern Ohio which averages 95 degrees F with 80% relative humidity during the summer. Guess what? I get unbelievably fatigued but that is understandable. I also get sunburns because while part of my ethnic background is Cherokee Indian the other parts are Irish and Eastern European. So while my brother looks Hispanic due to his summer tans I am freckled and I burn.
One must consider that a great number of legends and myths describe terrors, not just vampires, that visit in the night. Why? Because it's terrifying to be alone and in the dark and believe something horrifying is coming for you. But in even in nature that are no solely nocturnal animals.
As VladVoivode said, this planet needs the sun or else it would die therefore eveything on Earth is dependent on sunlight.
