Personally I think it is from the image portrayed in the movies...always dark, sinister, killing, but that is strictly my opinion.

i dont think that most ppl fear us, its more on the lines of them being sceptics and they dont believe in "vampires" so they think we are crazy b/c we are vampyres.
so pretty much they dont fear us for being vampyres, they fear us b/c they think we are crazy.

I would bet dollars to donuts that it must have something to do with the hundreds upon hundreds of years of myth and folklore that portray the vampire as the undead predator, damned and evil - compared to energy vampires whose history spans about 3 decades - whilst the kind and noble energy vampire history is maybe in the last 15 years...and even 'awakened vampires' (like the Bellanger who wrote the Codex) like to be portrayed as dark and mysterious and goth.

Perhaps it's the fact that the dictionary that is responsible because it still defines you as:

vam·pire P Pronunciation Key (vmpr)
n.
A reanimated corpse that is believed to rise from the grave at night to suck the blood of sleeping people.
A person, such as an extortionist, who preys upon others.
A vampire bat.

I fail to see the logic in complaining about the 'misconception' people have toward the 'vampire' when it's definition was well known at the time it was adopted by your 'species'. It's also confusing to me that the goth scene (of which I have been a part of for nearly 20 years) is the most dominant social group to have energy vampires. Perhaps one shouldn't try to dress quite so much like the movie vampires if one doesn't wish to be associated with them. Perhaps a different name should have been considered when looking for a way to define the awakened or energy vampire.

Perhaps the reason is because that dictionary definition is the PROPER definition of a vampire, and we adopted a name that was misleading, inaccurate, and should probably be changed at some point to avoid the constant confusion...

well, i am living proof that not all vampyres are dreadful/gothic...
i am a total prep! a lil sk8er, but i dress prep other than my rbk shoes which look gangster...lol
i am not mean or anything, i am nice to everyone, and i am very down to earth!
im gonna be a cheerleader...lol
and all of my friends are prep too, other than a few sk8ers/surfers and one or two gueeky ppl at school! lol...i have to get help w/ my homework somehow...lol

but, vampyres really arent bad at all, although some do go after that bad image and try to scare ppl, which gives all vampyres a bad name.

LaMuerte my Phoenix brother, you hit the nail on the head. If one chooses the name...especially an established word with centuries (millenia?) of history, one chooses all the baggage that comes with it. If you wish to spend the next half a century or more overcoming that definition and all it's baggage in order to 'own' it (so to speak), then good luck - but the smart move would be to find or create a new word that fits what you are and not try to manipulate an existing word to mean something else...

Or at least to not be so upset that people place you in the same realm as the original definition. Again I point to those (like LaMuerte) who have truly accepted who they are and take little or no offense (and are actually often amused) by the corelation between what they are and the vampires of myth and fiction.

hmm
there is also the alpha beta matter to consider
I don't call myself a vamp outside of this site really...
and yet I have been told repeatedly I am an intimidating person...i'm a short out of shape mid 30's guy who is always joking around....not exactly intimidating...
but for some reason people find me that way...
one guy told me I was a definite alpha personality.....predatory in fact..
I don't take shit from ppl...I make myself heard in large crowds of ppl...basicaly I just have a presence that people listen to when i am talking...I always just thought it was because I generally only chime in on a topic when i know what the hell i'm talking about...
but maybe it's more...like an alpha wolf....
it's not always the biggest dog in the pack...
but the rest just KNOW which is the alpha

I think most people think of vampires as folklore and things they see in a movie. If you tell a shrink, you believe in vampires or are one, you will get a nice mental health label attached to you. Some people may believe in some aspects of vampires and consider them to be devil worshippers. Bram Stoker's Dracula that starred Anthony Hopkins had one line from Van Hesling that referred to a woman under Dracula's control as the devil's concubine. The media has protrayed vampires as evil vile creatures.

I don't think Hollywood did anything but expand on an Archetype that already existed throughout the ages in fiction.

Let me clarify. Hollywood takes stories, not so much based on the actual history, but based on the most popular selling aspects of the Archetype. They emphasize the hunger, the beastial necessity to feed, the darkness, the ego, and the power. Those are things that the average, paying box office goer finds alluring, and macabre at the same time. But Hollywood keeps it tame enough to let people sleep at night, and by the DVD.

History is much worst, considering the wide variety of Vampire that has existed throughout the ages(on seperate continents, in the same periods, mind you). Heads detaching from bodies, feeding on the blood of infants suckling. Women coming back to haunt former lovers after they've died, and various other startling, and "horrible" accounts.

Those are the time honored, and long told stories of vampires and the undead...

Which, brings me to my point. That is the misconception. As previously stated, taking the name Vampire/Vampyre is what breeds the misconceptions, the stereotyping, and the animosity of norms. And having a bunch of people clowning around feeding those stereotypes in public places doesn't help much.

But lets face it.. regardless of how informed people may be, regardless of what FACTS are presented to them about the truth, there will always by misconceptions, anger, and out right bias towards things that they can't understand.

I think that it's important to establish whether or not the folks who are energy vampires or awakened vampires consider their kind to have been the origin of the myths and legends and ancient folklore. One could then make a case for misconception because there would at least be a connection to the original definition and the misconception would be historical (a misconception from the beginning or a misconception based on evil ancestors).

If however (and I've seen no one argue otherwise) the name vampire was merely adopted because someone thought it a cool description for what they were or someone thought it was a close enought (albeit negative) description...then the fault doesn't rest with those of us familiar with centuries of vampire tales or Hollywood but with those who took the name and tried to apply it to something else.

The media cant be held wholly responsible even we want to see horror movies of the undead..I adore them myself..
It is the people here that need to teach that we arent an ancient enemy.
We are friends, companion, lovers....Yes we tend to seem intense to some. I am sure this has a great deal to do with personality rather then what we are or what our beliefs are.......
I think if we wanted to we could change a few minds and get a better understanding from people outside of here.....

Look, not one of you here can say they didn't get the whole 'vampire' thing from books, movies, history etc. You didn't make it up yourselves, that's for sure. They have never been considered the great shiny saviours of the world, and all things sweet and fuzzy. I can certainly see why people prefer to stay away from someone who identifies themselves as a member of a species of undead monsters who feed upon the blood of the living. That's just plain common sense. This has nothing to do with fear of the unknown, they just don't want to be murdered in their sleep. Even I can see where they're coming from. If your going to go ahead and tell someone, it's probably a good idea to give explanations first, rather than giving them the time to make the obvious assumptions, then if they still don't get it, just don't tell them. Simple as that.

I think some people understand the simple truth of the situation and others...not so much...I think Vashti makes some solid points but Paulo is pretty dead on with his first statement.

People aren't necessarily afraid of the unknown, so much as they think that you're nuts. I sympathize but it's really not that surprising of a mistake when you break it down.

Let's say for example that I have realized that I have a metaphysical or spiritual ability. Perhaps I can read people as if I had a antenae...just clear as day I can read people...their innocence or lack thereof and even some thoughts. So I think to myself...that's a lot like the unicorn. Now I decide to call myself a unicorn. I do not however, think that I am a large mythical horse with a horn growing out of my head. It is not surprising however, given the years and years of history, film, art and fiction on the unicorn, that anyone would reach the logical conclusion that I (calling myself a unicorn) was a friggin nut who thought I was a magic horse from a Tom Cruise film.

Now if for some reason, I also happened to like the unicorn myth and I had unicorn movies and posters in my house and maybe a unicorn bumper sticker on my car, one would have to agree that it only lends itself to the misconception that I believe myself to be that very same mythological creature. I can complain that Hollywood is messing up the facts and that a unicorn is what I am not what they show in the movies...but that's not really fair to the reality of the situation (especially if I enjoy those very same movies).

The reality of the situation is that I should have chosen a different name for myself or have simply expected the response that people give.

I'm not saying that those who are energy vampires or awakened vampires are crazy...I'm saying that the average person is going to naturally make that assumption since you chose a mythological creature's name to describe what you are.

I belive that the majority of people fear vampires due to the fact that that is what they have been protrayed as my most books, films etc. Also there are many killers who have chosen to give thier killing a vampiric twist this gives no good publicity. Also people fear what they do not understand.

Heh, maybe I got a little to preachy with the whole Hollywood aspect of the conversation. ;)

What I was trying to point out, and which was later stated much more clearly, is that people have an ingrained fear of anything relating to the word Vampire, especially when the guy next door is calling himself one. It doesn't help matters much when they openly admit they sleep in a decked out coffin, and have dolls hanging from nooses in the tree on the front lawn.

The fact is, people help breed the misconceptions. Its up to everyone to break down those barriers, and enlighten them to the truth of the matter... whatever that truth may be for you.

I will say, this had made me rethink how I portray myself to associates and friends... Thanks for the Brain Candy. =)

There are to many vampires folklore and legens out there - from to many places and many of them along the same time lines.

I do not believe that others share a misconception of the vampire. Vampires are not nice people. They hunt, and they feed on the living. That is actualy what a vampire is. Legends and Lores established long since anyone from VR was around.

We.. are the actual misconception. As we do not fit the actual Vampire Profile of what a vampire truly is.

In that regards, when you proclaim to someone you are a vampire, they are going to think that you are calling yourself an ageless, bloodsucking, immortal albeit damned creature from hell taking out humanity at each oppurtune moment out of hunger, rage, or just plain shytz and giggles.. because for thousands of years.. that is what they have always done.

As always Felix and the rest of you have more than covered this subject but I would like to interject this...

The word "vampire" dates as far back as 1732. The meaning for the word tho has changed many times. It originally had many different meanings, usually referring to werewolves, revenants, demons, humans who can shapeshift, witches, as well as living corpses...basically anything that the people of that time did not understand and couldn't explain.

Perhaps those of us that do not consider ourselves the mythological creature, the bloodsucking dead, should call ourselves soemthing else, but the name has been used to describe many things...even witches, which many of us ARE...

I wish I can speak out on this issue. Its bad enough myself I'm afraid when I pass by certain churches since I'm a wiccan. I was once stopped by this kid that questioned as he was taking surveys while I was visiting Salem, Mass. He asked me why I chose it, then he had the balls to come right up to my face to say maybe you chose the wrong religion. I got so pissed I yelled at the top of my lungs out in public. People were cheering me on....

It is most definetly the ignorance of society due to the way vampires, witchcraft, wicca, etc is projected in the media. Most people don't even have any idea that wicca and witchcraft aren't related, in the sense that wicca is white magick and witchcraft is black magick, wicca is a religion, witchcraft is not. Same goes for Vampires. They are made out to be evil, leeching, succubus's and a figment of the imagination. People deny it because of denial, and/or fear, because of the persona you see on tv and movies and music.

people fear everything that is unknown to them. They fear normal people who they dont know. The fear is greater in some than in others. The fear to say hi or introduce yourself to someone u dont know is an example or the fear to tell a woman "wow you are beautiful" the fear is what the other person is going to think of them. So the fear that someone considers themselves different than u is the strongest fear of all. What is this person going to do to me or how are they going to think of me?

Once again, the 'media'? Where exactly did you here about vampires if not the 'media'? 'Vampire' is not a term you get to change around based on what you personally see yourself as. You cannot just decide that you are a 'vampire', then up and decide that everyone else has to change their use of the word because you don't like it anymore. It came into existence long before you and will continue long after you're gone. And to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't call the emotion people feel towards 'vampires' to be fear, so much as disgust and extreme dislike. If someone came up and told you that they were the reincarnation of Hitler, I suspect you'd have a similar reaction. Even when they explained that Society's idea of Hitler was just propaganda, and that in reality they were just trying to help. You know what? I'm getting sick of metaphors. Long story short, it's no one's fault that they react the way they do. It has nothing to do with media, fear, or the price of tea in China. It has everything to do with common sense. Try and use yours.

the word vampire comes from romania even before the real dracula a vampire is someone who died in a bad way maybe with a lot of anger and or hate or in a brutal way and there spirit cannot rest so it drags its body around after death like a mindless zombie and thats the true diffinition of vampire
what we are is hungry in a different way a hunger wich cannot be sattisfied no matter how much we eat and it is a sort of disease i guess you would call it wich is actual being studied and called the vampire disease a very great deal of ppl have this disease and is called the vampire disease cause it has simularities with the common bloodsucking myth of vampire
this disease kind of thing wich is not known to much cause ppl are afraid to speak of it since its studies are quite underdeveloped make you hungery for energy wich food cannot give you you need to feed off anothers energy in some form or way
some ways of feeding is through emotional dramatic contact with people or people who feed off of others energy in some way or another usualy they are considered to be somewhat psycic then there is the kind of person who needs sex to get there energy and then there is the rare blood lust the one who needs to take ones evergy directly from blood
the reason it is called the vampire disease is because it has some affects of vampires like weakend from sunlight and this accurs at certain degrees some dont realy feel it to much others cant bare the sun then there is the excitement at night where you cant help it no matter how tired you may have felt all day by the time night comes you are restless you feel week if you dont feed for a while in wich ever way you need to but if you would like to consider yourself vampire and take on the mythilogical name for it then youll find you answer to way we have such a misconception we are something else not the true word vampire from the romanians ways but something else that needs a word so until we find that new word to take on we will always have misconception and nobody will ever take us seriously because they think vampires are undead blood sucking fiends wich we are not
some might need blood but are not undead nor are we ruthless fiends unless that is what your personality is and thats what you want ppl to think
so this is your answer wether you believe it or not

I must say.. once you compared vampires to mindless zombies - truly I had to force myself to keep reading your post. Vampires are not zombies, neither are the mindless, and in my view - its like comparing an apple to a fig.

Further, there is no one definition of a vampire. Each culture pretty much has a definition that has been around prior to your birth.

I personaly do not believe vamparism is a disease. Others might have a different belief. Some might view as a curse, while others a gift. There are at least 3 other diseases that are similiar.. but have actual medical names, and are treated with medications.

In view of the tital of this thread.. which is about misconceptions, I believe what I believe. If you took the time to read my post, perhaps you would know what that is, and comment on it?

PS>
I personaly, make it a point to read an entire thread and everyones response before I reply - They take the time to read mine, so I return the courtesy. This also gives me the chance to mention a person whom I might share an opinion with, and not constantly go on with a response already said more then 3 times.

"in time we hate that which we often fear." William Shakespeare. People are afraid of what they don't understand and I think that is the case with most of society and vampirism/vampires.

So tell me, if it is not from the "media" why then do people fear vampires? How does common sense inflict fear into people who as you stated, first saw these creatures and how they are examplified from the media? I don't understand. You are disagreeing, but you are not stating your actual opinion on the question.

I believe that the movies & things do play a part in it.. I also believe that people have a tendency to fear things that they know nothing about.. The fear of getting to know or learning something new is too much for them to handle...

now i have posted a response and someone else says my vovabulary on the true word of vampire is wrong
if you go to romania where the word had indeed originated and you ask the people the wise ones they will tell you that the vampire is an angry soul dragging its body around like a zombie and notice how i say like not a zombie they walk around like they are mindless but they are not there ficed on setting there past right kind of like the crow only in a more dead manner and if you do not believe me you can go to romania yourself to see from the place where the word had originated and ask them the true meaning of vampire
yes cutlures have twisted this word around and made it something else for each culture but i do not appreciate people saying i am wrong with out getting there research first
so all i merely am stateing is that the original meaning is what i said before
and i didnt call what we have a disease but something like a disease like one would call clarvoyance a curse something they are damned to maybe i need to be more descriptive next time and yes i no there are thousonds of meanings for vampire that is why i said we need a new word so we dont get mixed up with the thousonds of definitions like what just happened
one last thing the vampire we as a country know the fake vampire anyway is the immortal dead soul who rages for blood now you tell me if you thinking your a vampire think that you are dead and immortal cause this is the point i am trying to get crossed that is the false myth the ramanian one wich i have been said to of been wrong about is the first true meaning the original and if you think im wrong look it up research it as much as you can before saying so

I believe that the misconception perpetuated by the movies is not one that we should be feared, but rather that vampires are romantic, and to be envied- I posted before that lack of feeding may well be what causes my migraines, and the obvious other side effects of being a feeder hardly make it something to be envied- although for some of the things I enjoy, I suppose it is to be envied. But Hollyweird is a collection of extremes- either vampires are horrid, ugly, evil creatures to be feared and destroyed, or all are handsome and sexy and loving death. There never seems to be any middle ground

I would have to say the media plays a major role in the misconception of our kind. People fear what they don't understand. No one has ever taken the time to help outsiders to understand. If they understood better i dont believe there would be such misconception.

Its been once, but I feel I have to reiterate it light of some very... ummm... poor information spewing forth from the turbulant fingertips of a know-it-all...*cough*soulweaver*coughcough*444*hackcough*...

The word Vampire comes from an older word.. Vrykolakas, in that one particular region. But Myths about restless Dead feeding on others, or coming back to pester them, existed through out time, on ALL continents. Every major civilization has a word for them. Even older names would be Empusas, and Mormo, which have origins dating 1054 and 1057 AD. The Menippus was another, who frequently played tricks and caused mischief against their vampiric counterparts, the Lamia and Empusa.

The main point of the thread was to discuss misconceptions... and you appear to be ripe with them. I would offer up your own suggestion... Study hard before you let the fingers fly.

The way I see it, and I don't think I'm alone(as others have said the same thing), is that people breed the misconceptions of others through their choice of "label." If you call yourself a Vampire... well, expect all of the pros and cons that come with it. The media helps fuel it, but the people choosing to use the term to describe themselves are the ones really fanning the flames of bigotry and stereotyping. ;)

Soulweaver444 - The Vampire in Lore and Legend, by Montague Summers - First Printing 1880 under - The Vampire in Europe. First US printing 1929, E.P. Duttun. Includes bibliographical references and index.

His work predates the Romanian culture. Back before the birth of Christ. Though the vampiric word arises in 700AD in Romania.

If you would like to debate this issue, I would be happy to open a new thread for which it would apply... doesnt really apply to this one.

bloodysparklesod, what would you think if I told you that I was a convicted child predator? Disbelieving? Upset? Disgusted? Probably something along those lines. And if you had children? I suspect you'd be afraid for them. That is common sense. Common sense tells you that child predators are dangerous. This is not fear of the unknown, this is not the media spreading misconceptions, this is putting 2 and 2 together and making 4. It would not help the situation if I told you that the kids liked it. It might even make it worse. Now, god knows I'm making an extremely unfair comparison, but I am using the common ground of the dramatic to make a point. Try not to take offense please. Common sense means that if someone portrays themselves to be something universally know as dangerous, that you should be wary of them. It also means that if you aren't sure that the person you are talking to is going to undersand you, you don't spring this kind of thing on them. They have every right to freak out. The media is not spreading 'mis'conceptions. Vampires (in this case the word is meant to describe the beings spoken of by hundreds of cultures across the globe for thousands upon thousands of years as being the undead who feed upon the blood of the living) are bad. Evil. Damned to the darkest depths of the abyss. No getting around that. Those who choose to call themselves vampires now are clearly not like that. What is equally obvious is that they will be tarred with the same brush. 100 thousand years of history can't be wrong just 'cause you say so. If you want to keep discussing this, PM me. Otherwise, I'm tired of sifting through the dozens of apparantly illiterate people who keep repeating "Fear of the unknown!" because they can't seem to read anyone else's posts. Sorry if I seem a bit harsh, but this is becoming a sore subject with me. And once again, no offense meant, just trying to illustrate a point.

I understand your point, and I understand what common sense is. Yes, you are correct in what you state. But I am still sticking to my guns. It is true that (people) would be wary of something being passed on for thousands of years, yadda yadda, but it is also the ignorance and fear instilled in people that keeps them ignorant to it, so they keep fearing and keep denying it instead of delving into it (deeper) and/or finding what it is. So yes, I agree with you. Common sense is needed, no one can survive without it. But common sense cannot lead you to believe or fear something you don't know until you actually know something about it; now isn't that common sense?

Vashti - Here Here!

I have noticed the vast number of responses that its the movies. So many about movies...

Yet in reality.. the movies are far less horrorfying then the actualy myths, legends, and folklore of what the actual vampire truly was said to be.

I agree.. I dont think alot of people read the threads.

Well I think it largely has to do with FEAR the fear of the unknown. Ppl have seen and heard so many folklores and movies that protray only the evil side if any of a Vampire or vampiric things. The Fear keeps many from actually going and seeking out the knowledge or the persons whom may be vampiric and live such lifestlye therefore until one actually seeks out the knowledge or to know the peson that lives this lifestyle, thre will not ever be an understanding of them. I myself seek out to know and to understand not to fear it. Alot of us may be surprised just what you may find in not being afraid and to embrace and learn from them /it... just an opinon ... Fear will hinder you and keep you in the dark.. :)

Does everyone here that posts "fear of the unknown" believe that this is somehow based on the 'ignorance' that people have of the awakened vampire? That the world should feel responsible and dutified to go out and learn about every underground or fringe movement that exists?

And more directly to the energy vampire or awakened vampire...do you feel that now that you have 'adopted' this term vampire or vampyre to mean you, that any old or other current uses of the term "vampire" should be somehow removed or changed?

Should Dracula movies and books have a disclaimer that say this no longer is an accurate definition of a vampire?

Well yes I feel it is ignorance of ppl to make any assumption that something they know nothing of is to be afraid of it and therefore they should seek out and learn more of anything that they have no knowledge of.. ppl hear or see things that may or may not scare them or cause them to fear it therefore they just assume it is totally evil or bad to be or live in such a way. NO i do not feel we need to change the movies or anything I just feel ppl should become aware of anything that they do not totally understand, that may be out there. what is wrong with knowledge and learning about things we do fear or do not quite understand in this world or even things of history..... if you do not educate yourself then you will always have a misconception of many things that are around you. at least this is how I feel and I always want to learn and understand all aspects of ppl and society.. ......not to fear and cower in the shadows... just how I feel and my opinon is all.

not sure all the reasons. i know some people are afraid of things they do not understand or have not tried to understand. some get their perceptions from movies and books and think that what they see or read is evil and don't bother to go beyond that.
some as one mentioned are skeptics and some might be afraid as well that what they have heard is true and are afraid of that as well.

Humanity has always feared that which is different from the "normal" and while there have been some people in the past whose crimes could be labled vampiric it also gave the church another hammer to hit people with and demand conversion to their beliefs for protection from the "terrifing" vampire. While Hollywood is to blame for many evils, they only expounded on this one. They have also portrayed vampires as misunderstood/tortured persons too.

Yes people do let Fear consume them and that is why so many will not ever understand the many realms of this world or universe. They will not or do not go and seek the knowledge or information on the things that they fear therefore, in my eyes they will always be the weak ones. I do not fear things I don understand instead I try to understand their reasons and meanings. I f I do not then why am I even here? what to just scurry away in fear and live in ignorance.. NO . but this Is how I choose to be and to live. learning and facing things I do not know or understand, so that I may be enlightened to the knowledge of it. Wy fear? why? I just feel people should be stronger and seek out ....in order to live a more filling life. just my thoughts is all...
