according to old European folklore, a sure fire way to deal with a vampire is to leave a tangled fishing net on his / her grave - the vampire is compelled to sit untangling and repairing the net, until the sun comes up. another old wives tale says you can keep a vampire from entering your home by scattering rice over your doorstep - the vampire cannot pass until they have picked up and counted every grain.

this would suggest that Vampires are obssessed with puzzles and games (anyone for a game of double hangman?). Do any of the Vampires on this site recall hours wasted during the eighties whilst they sat fiddling with a Rubiks Cube? Given the choice of biting a luscious virgin's neck, or finishing off that 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, do you go for the jigsaw every time?

Well I had not thought of it till now, that you have mentioned it ....I did do that and yes I do go for the puzzles and do not stop till I have gotten them complete... This is a very interesting thought you have brought up. Amazing how very close it is to how I am and how I do act/behave with puzzles and such....

I like this thought you have posted.Though i must dissagre with both.. Vampyres are highly known to be OCD..Hence the tangled net and the rice. This comes from the B.C times .
REFERANCE---..Vampyres are of a nature of higher mind quality,They are a curious kind."If i do this what will happen"A supossed myth rolled around in these times that Lilith had a gown made and it was less then perfect. With her being upset she cast upon all the race with inproved minds. And i'm not just talkig about this and that from the ways they can fly and all of that other stuff.. But inproved minds by the way of being to see in a different perspective So to the point of my disscussion.. Yes.. I am sure vampyres love playing games.. Who wouldn't like fun sometimes.. But i don't think games are a weakness to a certain point.. We are a one track mind.If we see food we feed..Nothing will stop that.. Not rice or nets.

Are vampires really highly known to be anything? *grin*

Anybody remember the X-Files episode with that town of vampires, and Muldor kept one busy by spilling a bag of sunflower seeds or something like that? The vampire was so very pissed off as he started to count them, stopping only long enough to tell Muldor how very angry he was.

Seeing as how real vampires are human beings, I would think, if put in the highly unlikely situation of "kill and feed to prevent discovery, or count the spilled marbles", that a person would be able to overcome their OCD for a few minutes to take care of the screaming person problem.

But that's just my opinion. ;)

If I can eat and type, I am sure a vampire can count things and bite necks

Also vampires are supposed to be able to move at great speed, it can't take them long to count a few seeds can it?

I am nuts when it comes to puzzles especially the 1000 or more pieces. When I have it all laid out and begin to put it together I actually can memorize every piece and when I fall asleep I dream of where a certain piece goes so I wake up and do it. Happens with evry puzzle.

You seem to be demeaning the power of the Vampyre

I for one take that as an insult and this being a vampyre related site (if not excusive)
I would appreciate more qualification regarding your post

LordLestat,

I was not intending my post to be demeaning to vampire powers and certainly not intended as an insult to you personally.

I can't see how simply offering a vampire a puzzle could stop such a powerful creature in pursuing his goal.

The 'neck biting' and 'counting' references were a direct answer to the matters in the original question

I would be grateful if you would re-read my answer with this in mind

i find the seed / rice counting thing a bit unlikely - its just a bit of folklore. the point is, according to folklore many mythical beasts / gods / fairies etc are beaten or defeated due to some obssession with puzzles and games. like the Rumplestiltskin tale. i know he was never depicted as a vampire, but the principle is the same principle. like playing chess with Death.

Well, I do know about the OCD compulsion. I am just a regular human not a vampire by any stretch of the imagination. but, I finid that I will sit for hours on puzzle or game or something that is complexing and I feel the need to figure it out.

So it may be something that is an individual thing and something that doesn't effects all those that belong within vampiric society.

Hmm... I have noticed that before, actually... I have a tedious obsession with the whole action-reaction thing... I do things just to see what will happen... It's something I can't help most of the time... and yes, I will even stop in the middle of an arguement or something that should require all of my attention just to do something like that... Maybe it's just me, though...

I'll admit to being just a little too OCD with games, puzzles, and mindteasers. Stop to count the rice? Sorry, not my cup of tea. Untangle and repair a fishing net that's not even mine . . . okay, I've done things similar to that already. It's definitely an interesting train of thought.

r.e. playing chess with Death - i was thinking of Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal - i'm not sure if that was inspired by myth or his own invention, but the idea of a hero playing some sort of strategy game with a deity or spirit being for his soul / life is a common archetype. sorry to cut through the pretension, but chess is a game, its played between two players on a board with equal numbers of pieces. but in the broad sense of the wrod, all contests are games. the Olympics are called the "Olympic Games" do not think that calling something a game in any way demeans it. games play a very important role in life. i dare say there are a few serious Vampires who see the trapping of their quarry a game. many people see seduction as a game. call it an intelectual challenge if you prefer. I must say, the idea of it being OCD didnt occur to me til you mentioned it, and i now find that quite fascinating.

as far as the OCD thing goes, i remember even as a teenager when i was shopping at a grocery store, if i saw something in a spot it shouldn't be, i would move it. And i have been known to spend as much as 14 hours a day on video games. I don't know if these things are in any way related to "vampyric characteristics" or just part of our human nature.

karnstein,in Greek Mythology, the Sphynx stopped travellers & asked them a riddle.
If the traveller couldn't answer the riddle, the Sphynx killed & devourered the traveller.
I believe it was Theseus (but I don't recall) who answered the riddle & the Sphynx jumped, shreiking,to her death off of a cliff.
Also, there's a story that Daniel Webster once had a riddle contest with the Devil,if the Devil won,he'd get old Daniel's Soul.
Daniel won the contest, the Devil shreiked, cursing & cussing & departed to his domain.
Literature & Myth do have instances where Death was cheated through the "toss of a coin" or "roll of the dice".

I suppose whether they would take out their victims or count seeds would depend on the situation, and the type of vampire. Some vampires would instantly kill their prey, while others would take the time to count the seeds, knowing their prey would not elude them forever and revelling in the thrill of the hunt.

I am obsessed with comprehension. Not just mine, but other peoples as well. (I see other peoples points of view really rather quickly, and then spend a lot of time trying to explore other points of view... which makes me seam argumentative..Heh heh.)

I like to understand the why of the thing. The end result of the puzzle is irrelivant if you understand the "trick." A whole system that follows a trick of wordplay etc... tehn that type of puzzle becomes boring to me.
However, there are some things that stop me cold because I do not understand tehm properly. Even though basic elctrical wiring is simple... I do not like to do it, because I do not really understand electricity... not that I won't use an electrical device... jsut that I won't fiddle with it beyond the scope of my comprehension (ie transistors and motherboards...etc).

So in this way I could see a puzzle as a barrier. If an enigma were presented to me... I would not destroy it, in fact I would be fascinated to the point of destraction.

A good enigma is harder to find than a food source.

but would it apply if someone else simply dropped the 'game' in front of them, as in the case of the vampire myth up top?

I have to agree with Lestat that the original myths were more about obsession and compulsion rather than games or puzzles. After all, how much of a game is counting rice or picking up seeds? OCD is painfully difficult for a person to simply ignore. On top of that, we should consider that in the myths where this is mentioned, it was 'impossible' for a vampire to continue until the obsessive task was completed. This pointed to a supernatural influence over their compulsion and not simply a devout interest in solving problems.

Finally, this is one of the OLD myths...it would seem odd for many of the people here to argue against the idea of the original undead myths with their penchant for silver or garlic or sunlight, etc and then totally embrace the idea that vampires are obsessed with games because it fits in with their ill spent time in the eighties. That seems a bit like cherry picking to me.

I like to think that these early solutions to stopping vampires were hatched in order to give someone hope in the face of spreading futility from the diseases that were often the cause of 'vampire sightings' centuries ago. You no longer had to dig up your recently deceased mother, behead her, and stuff garlic in her rotting mouth...just throw a tangled net on the grave. Besides, local magistrates were starting to frown on the whole grave desecration hysteria so this would also offer a more legal alternative.

The members article 'Seeds and Vampires' says that The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Dead pp: 545-546 goes on to mention that the vampire could only count one seed a year. If the myth is right the vampire would hardly ever move ! - counting not just the seeds thrown out to stop him but also the seeds that blow around naturally.

I follow along with FelixFelix - some of the myths are based in fact, smash a stake through the heart of someone you think to be a vampire and - yes - they die. The seed myth doesn't hold much chance in working.

It would have to be a more of a reassuring thing to stop people worrying.

FelixFelix I think had a very good point.

I think that it was a matter of stoping people from descrateing graveyards and economis that might have given birth to these tales.

It would stand to reason. as most cultures frown disturbing graves, the government(local)and law enforemnt of the times woud have to come out with something at that time that would plausibly pass in the minds of the ppl.

It didn't have to make a whole lot of sense as most things that are based on a certain belief system don't unless you believe and tht is all that counts

and perhaps the seed thing is a spell, or faith... i would have to read/hear the myth to find the grain (seeed) of truth to the story.

Anyway, back to teh topic of games and not just the myth that was the springboard of teh topic; i agree that it would be because vampyres are intelligent that we are fascinated by games... i think that if one were really OCD one could not live as a vampire... tehre is way too much mess, the blood just gets everywhere. I can't imagine what it would have been like before lancets and alcohol/baby wipes. I don't think the OCD thing really stands up when you concider sangues.

Are we now implying that vampires (modern day or otherwise) have a stronger propensity for intelligence Kglitterous?

Let's look at that...if we're talking about myth, they've obviously been foolish enough to be caught by another vampire, and they always seem to get caught or destroyed in myth and fiction...so they're definately not more intelligent in myth or fiction that the average human...just stronger and older.

So how about modern vampires...well they chose the name vampires with all the stigma, superstition and prejudice that goes with the name...that was a dumb move. Many have also opted to follow as 'truth', the written word of a person who used to write gothic fiction and showed avid interest in VtM...that took some serious faith and imagination but I'd hardly say it required intelligence.

So do people think that vampires 'like games' because their smarter? Is that something that can be backed up or is that more ego coming into play?

With the exception of some games like chess, I don't think that intelligence and game playing always go together - skill and strength maybe.

So IF vampires are drawn to playing games it is probably nothing to do with his/her intelligence.

I'd look at most puzzles as being a question of creative thinking or three dimensional visualization. The ability to look at a problem in different ways or for different solutions. That to me is a big part of intelligence. I just don't think that 'vampires' have more of it.

I believe the intelligence issue would depend on the individual, needless to say.

As I do not want to restart the dabate over the mythical and the modern vampire, I woud say that the puzzle question would have to boil down to the person themselves.

But take note: Just because you like solve puzzles doesn't make you intelligence. it makes a keen problem solver, maybe, if you are reall good at it.

I am not sure that intelligence has much to do with it.

See now I think creative thinking and good problem solving skills are a sign of intelligence. I don't leave intelligence strictly in the book smarts realm. However, one could show great aptitude for creative problems solving and still be foolish or naive...but I don't think that makes them less intelligent...simply less experienced or less educated.

I will agree to that in part. I would say that the capacity for intelligence can be seen in problem solving. But there are a lot of very stupid people with a very high capacity for intelligence. Or maybe stupid is not the right word I should ignorant.

Actually, i think that the brain inhibits the mind... vampires (among others), for various possible reasons, are frequently less suseptable to that. The human brain (personal hypothesis) regulates thought into, not nessesarily advantagous paradigms. The mind, because it is part of the soul and not the body, is less constrained by physical limitations.

Logic is not intelligence as far as I am concerned. A computer is very logical, no-one conciders them intelligent. When a computer can "think" outside of it's programing (not just extrapolate) then it may be concidered intelligent.

Even an erroneous idea could springboard to a truth you would not conceive of without the false concept having facilitated it.

Vampires tend to concider more alternatives than mundanes, thus I suggest that they are more intelligent.
(many of the people on this forum are not vampires, I would not concider them mundane)

(fuckit, i am too tired to spellcheck...LOL
-post)

(PS- I should really make a new thread... I appologies for OT thoughts)

Yes, I was going to make a comment about experience too. Experience + Intelligence = options. Then we have the problem of free will... LOL.

There is also a gift called limited infalibility, which is a tapping into the devine: inspiration, epiphany... art etc; it is not intelligence, as it does not come from ourselves... either our mind or our brain.

My other thought was the fictional vampire having lost their soul... if they have lost their soul then they must have lost their mind... perhaps they are using demonic reflection of soul and mind?

Kglitterous - While I admire your spirit, I cannot agree to the idea that vampires are somehow better problem solvers or creative thinkers because they are more in tune with their mind and less hampered by their brain. As I've said, had that been the case, I don't think they'd have so recently chosen to use the word vampire to describe themselves and thus face the onslought of prejudice and negative press that comes with the moniker...or on the highly unlikely possibility that one believes the myths to have been influenced by ancient real vampires, one would have thought that those ancient 'problem solvers' would have worked out a faster way to dampen those negative prejudices other than waiting a few thousand years and starting some vampire societies in the goth scene.

Well I'm not a vampire or anything but I sure do love doing puzzles and I usually don't stop until I have finished them. And I have heard the same thing for vampires and counting things like rice and having to untangle fish nets and certain things. I wasn't sure if they were false or not and I also heard that they are fast counters at like lightening speed so I don't know if that statement would be true or not. But it's an interesting thought.

Great post karnstein! This is a very interesting topic! I have been diagnosed as slightly obsessive compulsive! If I start something, I must finish it! I don't really know if that would be a vampire trait or not tho! I tend to want to believe that would be more of a normal human thing! I mean vampires are more about the hunt wether it be for food or energy, I just see that as being their main focus! Maybe they were obsessive compulsive when it came to those things! I don't think rice or net could distract them from that!

I myself cannot stand not to finish anything I start. It becomes I guess you could say an obsession. Wheather it is reading a book, doing a puzzle, playing a game or etc... I will strive to do my best and not to finish is defeat in my eyes. I believe everything you attempt or start to do should be finished.

It is an interesting thought. I myself am overly obsessed with puzzles, riddles and trying to figure out the impossible outcome. The difference is I wont get involved in it if it is simply dropped in front of me. Only when one interests me and I start in on it do I become overly obsessed with finishing it above everything else around me. Getting all the knots out of a rope isn't something I have to do because it is there...if I am so inclined to take up the task as a choice then I do HAVE to finish it.

Yeah, I have to agree with being a bit OCD. I can be quite obsessive about things, and I do enjoy a challenge and puzzles/games. So perhaps there is a bit of truth in the "counting spilled rice and untangling fishing wire" myths...

Which brings to mind that I have come to realize in the last few days (since I became a member here)... the challenge to raise yourself in status on this site, though said status has no impact on my real life, is a maddeningly addictive one...

i like puzzles as much as the next vamp. although if given the choice of biting some hot guy...i'd totally go for the guy! but thats just me... i never did understand those old wives tales...a group of my frineds who are vampires used to test out the wives tales. they never found any that really where true. i think they were just told, and practiced, by the supersitious peoples of old. everyone needs a sense of being safe from what they fear, and these people feared vampires. thus the telling of the old wives tales.

While I don't truly have an opinion about whether or not the OCD thing with vampires and games/counting is true or not, I do find it of an absolute interest that so many of us that find ourselves enmeshed in this lifestyle display this same characteristic. It really is of no surprise that we would share not only this but also other traits. Go figure, right? It would lead one to wonder exactly what other traits would be found to be most predominant within the vampire/goth community, psychological and otherwise. I, for one, would be very interested in knowing these.

is this thread still running? i thought it would have closed ages ago. what have i started? i just took a bit of folk lore, and updated it to modern concepts - and seems i opened a whole new can of worms. the obsessive compulsive disorder idea is quite fascinating, and seems to have struck a chord with so many people. the idea of a vampire being distracted from his prey by a carelessly discarded sudoko puzle is definetely an idea hollywood should follow up on.

This is something similar to a conversation I was having about ten minutes ago. I can be obsessive about puzzles and problem-solving activities and do spend far too much time on these activities so it's interesting that you've brought up the idea of it actually being in a vampire's nature to do such things.

I too and am highly OCD as well as being an insomniac. This is a good combination. I can not start something without finishing it and doing it to a T and if I don't think it's perfectly done, I will tear it down and start again. I do believe this is the way a true vampire would react.

Great topic Karnstein. Its just too bad that so many people on this site took what you were saying and went a whole other direction with it. I find the Folklore of vampires fascinating to read about. Not saying I would ever think that they are a reality. Just like I never really considered Vlad Dracul to be a vampire. And I sure as hell don't think we are immortal or can fly. But To think about this OCD and spending countless hours on an object is something that alot of us seem to do. It is very relaxing to figure out that puzzle or spend 18 hours on a video game.

I even tend to spend hours upon hours when i get into the string of it just researching things. Thank you for posting this. And I thank everyone who actually stayed on topic here as well.

On the topic of old folklore, which I'm well familar with. It is said yes, Vampires are "drawn" to puzzles and games. I personally don't believe it's true. I do not consider myself a vampire. I study the history, and the culture of vampirism because vampires have fasinated me sense I was very young.

These things, puzzles, and games...other folklore...The garlic....the crosses...it all adds up. None of these things really work, it's all hollywood induced fantasy. Yes, these things come from a basis of truth old romanian folklore.
