other than the dramatizations for added excitement. Do you think "An american haunting" is it a true story or based on a true story or just an urban legend?
Well that is a hard question really because alot of urban legends are based on truth...
wow I was JUST reading about this haunting the other day. Ive heard a lot of stories that are hard to believe, but are very much true. Its just your own personal judgement that decides.
Well I have read the Bell Witch story and seen the signs at the place it occured in TN. I think that it is based in fact.
However, I think it was more a case of her own abilties to move things and cause the disturbance. I think she perhaps had some abilities that were "forced" into play due to having been sexually abused by her father.
I have read numerous books, and online sources concerning the Bell Witch. I have also seen the movie.
I belive there are facts to what was presented in books, and in the movies.
Betsy could have been the one doing it, or perhaps someone else was doing this to the Bell family.
Or it could have been some sort of force that isn't part of this world that was involved.
I believe that every legend has some truth behind it. The level of truth is the question at hand and without doing thorough research it is not possible to determine how much truth is present in the story presented in the book and movie.
ohhh nooooo!
im sitting home alone getting ready to whatch this movie by myself and you fellas are saying its based on fact.
im scared now!
The movie An American Haunting was based on a true story.
The writers of the movie however put there own twist on it... some facts of the movie.. such as betsy being abused by her dad... I've never seen or read anything about her been abused.
I personally thought the movie is pretty good... only it should have had more real and truthfully facts
legends are based on truth or fact but over time this can change to what happened from a point of view
Seen the movie knew it was based partially on truth as to whether or not Betsy was abused by her father that wouldnt have been written about due to the times she lived in they wouldnt have mentioned it to anyone so the abuse is suppositon entirely what happened was documented by a number of people they all seem to decide that it was a demonic thing at the time

There were alot of things in that movie that were not part of the actual story of the Belle Witch. I live not far from there and my husband had in deed been there on the properties. It is said that it is definatley haunted. There was also indeed a woman that was the witch. I have done a few studies on this very topic, because I wish to go there one day, and I personally from the different things I have read do not think that the child caused this all. There are to many things that just seem to out there for her to have done. :)

i think its all in what you percieve but anything is possible. me i dont have a problem in believing in ghosts or things that they can appear to do.
my own grandda haunted his and my grammas house for years until my gramma was stricken with altzheimers and had to be moved to a nursing home. The house, as it was, was starting to rot and needed more repair to keep it standing rather than tear it down and build a new one. the house was torn down and the land sold, and a new house built on it, whether he is still there or not, i have no clue as i havent been back since they tore the house down. to me it felt as if a piece of my soul was ripped out because i had grown up in that house and yard.
many times over the years fromthe time i was 12 and he passed away i stayed there with my gramma...i would sleep on my grammas bed, because she preferred the couch, and didnt like getting up to get in her bed. I would wake up in the middle of the night because it felt like someone was getting in the bed with me, and altho the mattress would sink, and the covers move and there was an indention in the pillow, no one was there.
if every light in the house was left on, my gramma would say i wish john allen would turn some of these lights out and all the lights in the house would go out except for the one in the room we were in..and no one had moved.
if i got up at 4 am to start the coffee and give my gramma her medications and get my handicapped uncle up, the coffee would already be brewing and my grandas cup would be sitting on the kitchen table, sometimes half full of hot coffee, made just the way he liked to drink it, usually with one of his cigars sitting half smoked in the ashtray beside it with the morning newspaper spread out on the table. this was when i was around 15 for the first time. i was 12 years old when he died, and the only person with him when he went. my mom and gramma had been shopping my dad working and my brother and uncle had went with my mom and i stayed behind with my grandda because we were watching the baseball game... atlanta braves were playing the minnesota twins and we always watched atlanta braves play baseball together.
i was never afraid myself, because i knew my grandda had never hurt anyone when he was alive and i knew he wouldnt hurt anyone when he was dead.
yes i know this is off subject but like i said its all how you percieve things.
I believe that it is based on facts..I am sure a twist was put in there too though.. But I do know that movie freaked me out...
I've read a couple of online resources. I want to see the movie. This subject reminds me of The Blair Witch stories because like he Bell Witch, the Blair Witch may or may have not been the one that killed the residents. I know the Blair Witch is just a ghost story, but someone has to have alot of time to make up a background story of her. Though I don't believe "Elly Kedward" existed, I believe that the Blair Witch. The "Blair Witch" is just a title. Anyone could have it. Especially since all that started in 1785 when witchcraft was practiced more often than today.
I think it's just an early version of Amityville, they have alot of similarities. And both were based on families who expierienced these happenings.
i belive it was based on true accounts that happend to the bell family......although i dont belive everything in the movie to be true.........hollywood always throws there fictional stuff in to spruce it up ..............
I think it's just your own personal judgement that decides ...
one from being from Tennessee, the bell witch story is true, however i agree with TwistedLadyLuck that the movie added twist and so forth to make it a more thrilling movie. i actually have a write up in my journal in regards to the bell witch.
I lived in TN for 15 yrs and its true same as midniteangel said.. but as always Hollyweird always glitzes it up
i think it's based on true things that happpened. but just like everyone else said hollywood always makes things more than they really are.
I most certainly do believe based on fact . . . but how much was blown up and changed over time as so many legends tend to do?
I think the story of the Bell Witch is based on fact, but like any urban legend there really isnt any concrete proof.
i believe its a fac ti do not believe it is true its just alegend its like a movie or novel.
All legends have some truth to it. This particular story is bound to have some truth to it as well.
I saw the movie, and although I personally have never done much research into the story, I don't know that the whole "she caused it due to abuse" thing holds up. As a survivor of sexual abuse...it just seems pretty exaggerated to me that she could have caused THAT much damage both physically and mentally.
I think all urban myths have some truth to them so i'm shure there is some truth in the movie.
I believe that it is both Urban Legend and actual story because most of the urban legends out there do have some truth to them but I don't believe that this one was to the extent that the movie went to..
I say that the bell witch story is true. Whether, the movie stuck to the story or added things, I don't know. I love movies based on truth because it makes it more scarier because it could've happened to you.
The mind and spirit is pretty powerful, and with such trauma, I believe anything is possible.
I live a couple towns over from Adams, TN. I have been to the Bell Farm. The place has a definite vibe to it. It is actually documented that Abe Lincoln was to stay there and wrote in his journal that he left with the troops because of a haunting. I never saw the movie, but I definitely enjoyed seeing the actual place.
I believe that some is based on truths and facts of these things occuring; other parts is just how one would precieve the events.
Since there are numerous detailed accounts involving the "Bell Witch"....
I believe it's possible that the stories are true.....
But since all the stories are technically "hearsay".....
it's also possible the stories could be blown way out of preportion.
Regardless.... they make a good story to tell at campfires!
I'm english so what is the American Haunting? I mean the story not the film. Please I would like to know.
I believe its a urban legend with some truth of it the mind is a powerful thing...I watched that movie it was pretty good...
lol Like HAWK2K said, whether the story is true or not, it does make a good campfire story.
Anything could've happened, especially back then. It might not have been Betsy. From the online resource I read it said that they don't know if it's really Betsy, but they're pretty sure of it. The "Bell Witch" could've been anyone else. Like The Blair Witch.
Not sure that the movie is at all accurate, but I think that it could be based in truth.
ok from what I've just read, she has been abused but by her "mother". And not "sexually abused" by her father. You can read about it here.

Its amazing how you can find out information from a forum post.
I knew nothing of this "bell witch" until stumbling upon this post.
And from reading about it the past 3 hours and scouring the web for more information it seems that there is historical, albeit possibly compromised references to support the bell witch.
Im going to have to visit the site sometime. Just see what is really going on.
yes i do believe it is...I have not only read about it but we watched the movie twice.
There is probably some truth to it! TV & books usually alter & hype things up to make them sell better! Still probably has some facts to it tho!
Theres definitely lots of truth to it if you overlook the tv shows about & the movie...All you have to do is get close enough to the bell house in adams tenn & you can feel a weird vibe..even ask the descendants of the bell family about it. they say that theres still an odd presence around them..
i think the base of the story is true, but hollywood and books added a bunch of things that entertain an audiance.
After feeling raped, myself, by the ticket seller and producer of this crap movie, and lamenting my lost 2 hours, I could no longer find an opinion on this subject if I aimed an electron microscope straight at my imagination. *bah*
who knows.....I think it could be....but there again hollywood is hollywood.....so who knows
I just cant beleive it the way it was presented in the movie.
The Movie is based on a true story from what I understand. I think it happened.

It is hard to concieve it to have happend as the movie has it stated to have been, but the more I have talked to people about this the more we have all concluded that Hollywood can base a movie on a true story simply because the girl sneezed. By most accounts of reading the history behind the story, it is alot different then what they say. I think if they are going to base a movie on a true event they should do a better job and more research.
the movies supposed to be based on the real thing but they went way over the limit with all the add ins...
Well I really don't know anything about the movie. But I suppose it is supposed to be based on the actual events that occurred. I do believe in the true accounts on the Bell family. It is really all in what the individual percevies to be fact or fiction.
I think it is the same with any urban legend, there is an underlying real story that has been blown out of proportion. It all boils down getting to the truth and knowing what is real and fantasy.
I forgot to add I found this site about the bell witch for anyone that doesn't know about the legend.
http://www.bellwitch.org/home.htm
i believe it was real for the most part, but alot of it was also put on.
i think we pretty much come to a conclusion that some of it is based on truth and alot of it was hollywood
and some legend and i dont think there is anything else to say that has not been said so if any body can close is i would be appreciated
Well I think that An American Haunting had nothing to do with a Bell Witch
