There are plenty of accunts of Excorisims that have been performed throught the years. So my this comes in 2 parts.

Part 1: What are your feelings about them, why do you think that they have to happen, what is the lesson to be learned from them if any, and most of all....why do perple have to become possesed in order for us to believe in them?

Part 2: Why is the Catholic church always shunning away from letting a Excorisim be known? Does the church have something to hide or gain from them? Why not help the word be told about them instead of acting like they dont exsist?

Ah my queen, good question, i believe that sometimes possession occurs for the simplest reason, that in general we are tactile creatures and these spirits simply want to feel again, to remind themselves of a bygone life, and once within a body they find it hard to let go.

As for the churches position on exorcism i would think that if the mass populas were told that the church believed that demons or spirits possesed people it would only be a matter of time before questions started to be asked about Jesus, was jesus just possessed of a spirit, and it could cause the downfall of a very lucrative business.
These views may be infantile but they are the opinions of a humble mage.

That is a very interesting question. I think the reason why exorcisms are kept quiet is because even if they were introduced to everyone people still wouldn't believe it unless thay saw it. I have always have belived in demon posessions, but it wasn't until I wittnesed an exorcism performed in front of me that I started to believe in exorcisms. I wittnesed the site of pure evil in front of me when it was being performed that it scared the shit out of me. I am not even really affraid of anything normally but that scared me. Demons posess people because the need to disguise themselves so they are unnoticed. Otherwise they will be killed by demon hunters.

The Catholic Church keeps it quiet because They dont want anyone to know that they exist because they look down there noses at it though they are the ones that introduced society to it.

The Catholic Church has not allows shyed away from exorcism. It actually was a propoganda and conversion tool. Historically when they were clashing with the rise of the Protestants throughout Europe. The exorcisms were a public spectacle showing the power of Catholic priests to expell demons and thus the "true" religion to belong to.

The catholic church hides many many many things, and is full of secrets... admitting exorcisms is also admitting there is more to life than what they preach.

As for why people become possessed, well guess that depends on the individual whether they allowed the evil entity to enter them, they could have been unprotected, wow the list goes on. There are many schools of thought on exorcism and whether it works or not. But they do happen and they happen on a regular basis.

Well i can agree to a lot of ppl in here....

Yes if the church did confess that all these things are happening then they will find that believers in everything else will take over..... While ever there is a monolopy on religion out there then they think there winning....... they dont want to confess to things that are happening and have been happening since life began...

Why they happen well we all know our bodies are just something we are borrowing , who is to say that what we were in our past life wasnt something evil or what ever?? We all say we are old soles there for we must of belonged to somthing or someone else...

As I child I witnessed both exorcism and resurrection. They both failed.

For the exorcism I say this is the only time I’ll give Hollywood credit. Not that I believe I just said that but the drama, tension, screams, spasms and heart pounding blood rushing events they have created come pretty damn close to the reality I witnessed.

So a lesson for all want-a-be cult leaders, higher a professional from the Roman Catholic Church instead of trying it using a do-it-yourself guide book.

Most of the priests I have spoken too trying to find out more info on exorcisms said they do need to be private and protect others identity as other shave said here. Also though they admitted there is no guarantee of success and it’s not exactly a science in the literal sense. It was explained as being all about devotion, focus, faith and willpower of all involved.

i dont think that the church shun exorcism. in fact some very educated and talented priests are allowed to heal exorcised people.

on the other hand, spirits may have exorcised people because they need help and want to say something important but someone could have ignored them..

or they could be mad spirits just fooling around like Loki, the god of discord

the catholic church is a standover murchant they use lies and deceit to control members of their church and its in all things like the pill, abortion etc etc. They fear that if their members are free to do what they like some will be lost to their course...

I dont know why people become possessed may be because at that point they are weak for one reason or another and it gives evil a chance to enter without to much of a fight....just my views got nothing against any church.

Regardless of why and how the Roman Church functions (besides they function as any other organization does) they are accepted as the leading and in some circles the only authority on exorcisms. Sure they lie and control their members, what organization does not. They have however studied and become the leading authority on this subject and are the leading entity to turn to for answers.

Here, too, the victim is innocent, but there is culpability on the part of whoever casts and/or commissions the curse. By the word curse, I mean the intention of harming others through demonic intervention. This can be achieved in many ways: malefice (or spell), binding, evil eye, malediction, and so on. The matter is serious, but we need to be on guard against misconceptions. By their nature, curses lend themselves to all sorts of abuses, especially when we consider the current escalation in the number of frauds, suggestions, manias, and more.

1. Exorcism is a necessary means of expelling demonic agencies of supernatural evil which should preferably be carried by someone proficient in this ministry who is also in holy orders.

2. The Church has nothing to hide, but is unwilling to expose demoniacs and exorcised people to the ridicule and sensationalism of the media, particularly the tabloid press. Furthermore, would future potential victims allow the Church to know about their situation if it was likely to be made public and become a media circus? Far better to respect their privacy and allow the ministry of exorcism to continue out of the public gaze.

1. It definitely exists. It is ridiculous how ppl don't believe. Especially the ones whom are religious.

2. They hide because they know ppl will want to witness it. we can't have privacy nowadays. Look at all these reality shows. Plus I think that they feel like if they started to involve more ppl in what they do or reveal the truth about the hidden more will be found out than they would like.

one i think if someone is taken over by a evil spirit or demon then yes a exorcism should happen. As of how it happened. They should look at what they have done in thier life to see if there was anything that left them open to being envaded by a demon or spirit.

2 the church always tries to cover anything up that would make them look bad. By letting the public know that exorcisms are needed in todays society that means that demons and evil spirits exist and that would make them have to explain certain things in the bible and such.

Well, I think that sometimes an Exorcism is necessary, especially for a younger person. They may only have a mental instability which can be treated with proper medication. I think that sometimes an exorcism is performed to please the family.

As for the Catholic church, well, I don't have much nice to say, so I have to tread lightly. I think they keep it under wraps because people don't really believe any more. Those who do may become frightened and think the "End" is coming. Also people don't put much validity into the church anymore. To those who practice this religion, please, if I have offended you, except my apologies, I'm meaning no harm. Just exercising my freedom of speech!

This is just my opinion, I don't really have any knowledge on the subject

I thought the last church-approved exorcism was June 3oth 1976, thats what lead to the really boring film 'Exorcism of Emily Rose'

I also wondered why, when most religions acknowledged a devil and possesson as a problem, the ceremony to remove them was just done by catholics

To my mind an exorcism is a ritual, a ceremony, which would allow someone with a psychiatric problem to latch onto and to convince themselves that it would 'heal' them.

The old Catholic church never denied exorcisms, they kept records on them. If you go to the vatican's website and search on 'exorcism' you'll see its quite open about it all

What they have always kept secret is the outcome of the exorcism, this is in line with the priest / customer secrecy thing

I think the new Catholic church no longer uses them because they think that there are better way to cure psychiatric problems

I don't think 'excorcism' has to be confined to just removing spirits from humans. You can get rid of energies, leftovers, whatever.

For instance, I often 'cleanse' a new living space. not because what was there was bad, but its not mine. So I hit the reset button.

I think people occasionally do need to be exercised. We're flawed beings and other things seek to take advantage.

As to why the church might not want it public, it may be as simple as they don't want to make it a matter of getting attention (at best) or they don't want a bad rap.

Exorcism. An interesting topic indeed. Dateline, NBC, and a few other news shows have done exposes on exorcism and demonology. Demonology is the last frontier of the superstitious in my belief.

All illness lies in the mind, and demon possession is a neat package in which to stuff dementia and other severe psychiatric problems. What's interesting is that exorcism provides sufficient psychopomp to allow the mind to 'cure itself'. Magic is done no differently. Heavy ritual is the tool of the magician to bring about 'supernatural' results. The conscious mind succombs to the more powerful psychic and divine minds. It lets go of the restraints that 3 dimensions hold on our perceptions and allows us to achieve contact with a higher perception. The results are fantastic when this happens!

As for exorcism, I believe it works. It provides the psychopomp that alleviates the mind of its normal restraints and allows for a true psychological shift. How long these changes last is anybody's guess. My assumption is that those who suffer psychological illness can have exorcism be the catalyst that puts them in a more amenable state towards recovery where modern medicine can help them control what is left of the demon in the mind.

Hm. A few modifications. Not all illness lies in the mind, but many psychological 'problems' lie in the mind and have very real physical causes with very real physical effects.

Exorcism is perhaps the catalyst that allows the normal host of the brain to finally gain a measure of control over the interloping chemical imbalance that leads to some of the more severe psychological problems. It's truly amazing how much the will and mind can control, most people never truly see the potential in their lives.

Jenova, it sounds as though you believe in a connection with something higher than ourselve but do not believe in excorcism as a literal, spiritual practice.

I have witnessed a few pagan excorcisms, and I have to say that for the most part I agree with you. I believe that whether or not there were spiritual influences during those times, the individuals involved have since been diagnosed with severe mental illnesses.

Although, since becoming Catholic a few years ago, my priest has told me some interesting stories, one of which involved the possessed individual spouting things about the priest nobody knew. Of course, that's only hear-say, and shouldn't be taken as fact.

Do you think actual demonic possession is possible?

Arunima,

demonic possession is possible yes, but is its likely?

Why would a demon with all the powers and the whole world at its disposal want to occupy just one single body, especially when that body isn't allowed to do human things (by being restrained) let alone demon things

It could be an argument that a mental illness might unlock those areas of the mind concerned with telethapy or even previous lifes, that would make them appear to have supernatural knowledge.

I have a friend who has ADHD and something else to do with E numbers. If you could see him after a few M&M's you would really think he was possessed, his words join together in a volume ranging from a wispher to a bellow, he looks at you by turning his face to the floor and rolling his eyes up, he thrashes around and is really violent if anyone touches him - a few years ago, he would have been labelled 'possessed' but he is just ... ill

I think this question overlooks a main point of the idea of possession; a person is being possessed. The people that I saw being "excorcised", even though I believe it was actually due to mental illness, were psychologically affected by the idea of something not from this world controlling them, what they said and did. The easy answer to your question is that demons like fucking with us. Just because the person is being restrained does not mean they are not affected by what's happening to them.

It could be an argument that a mental illness might unlock those areas of the mind concerned with telethapy or even previous lifes, that would make them appear to have supernatural knowledge.

The same issue as with Jenova comes up; why is it so much easier to believe in telepathy and past lives than in demons? None are able to be proven much past personal experience.

I see what you mean but I was trying to put myself in the position of a demon with the world at my feet.

I think I would soon get bored bothering just one person - but, as you point out, if demons would get a kick out of inflicting as much agony as they can on just one person then yup, that fits.

I personally believe in demons, its the possession part I have the problem with. If the 'symptoms' of possession can be explained by another means either illness or supernatural - I, personally, tend to go for the non-possession route

It's a good point...certainly if I were a demon who could do anything, then I wouldn't want to limit myself.

I think the problem I run into with that is that, while I do believe that demons of some kind exist, I don't know what they can and can't do, nor do I know the psychology of a demon. Much as I'd like to, I doubt a demon would want to have its mind picked apart by a human with a human-constructed degree in psychology.

In any case, personally I believe that both happen, that people simply have a mental illness and that some people are actually being controlled by something outside of current human understanding. Both, sometimes. Although I do believe that most cases are people who are sick or just want to believe that this thing is happening to them.

I do to believe in demon possesion. My church, an Evangelical church, is much more open about it. We have a deliverence group that anyone can be trained and join if they feel the calling. My dad was in it. My dad wanted me to join but I had too many things I didn't want revealed. They said in the first meeting that the demons will say truthfull and false things to you as you try and cast them out. Well, since I have experimented with bisexuality, I really didn't want my dad or anyone else to find out. I went and was prayed over by several women at one point who were" informed" by the "Holy Spirit" That I had been immoral both with men and women and that I needed to repent. That scared the shit out of me:) I don't think I was possed but the fact they new something that most people didn't know scare me. I never went back:) I did stop sleeping with women and got married but that was my choice later on and had nothing to do with that night.

When possed with the question of why a deamon with the world at its feet choose to fuck with a single person, we mustg take into count some of the Christian beliefs on what a deamon can and can't do.
Even though alot of us care very little for the Christian faith, the old story of Job comes to mind. In it they talk about that not even the Devil himself can do anything in this world without first getting permission from God. And that God limits what they can do here. And while this brings into question the whole "Why would God let something like that happen" deal. That really isn't the point.
The point tends to run in the direction of how to tell the diffirence between those who suffer from a mental illness and those who are under the trials and tribulation of deamonic possesion. And the Diffirence between invited possesion and possesion that is forced on the mortal vessel.

The Catholic Church takes Dogma and ritualism in the church to an extreme in everything they do. If you read the Bilbe, Jesus never had to read from books, sprinkle holy water and say three hail Masrys to get a Demon to come out. he just said do it. If a Preachers or Pastors faith is where it needs to be, thats all that is needed. The catholic Church hides it, because they do not work. nevr have. the people that wre supposedly possesed were never possesed, and the Church didnt want to be made to look like idiots.

Yes, I KNOW possessionn happens.and for a variety of reasons. could eb there were asked for, as in My case years ago. Could be that the person is messing with things that open them up to it, and it could be that the Demon is just trying to gain access to our world.Demons love to torment people, and possession is a great way to torment someone.

I have no use whatsoever for the Catholic Church. They have takenand twsisted everything that The original Christioans believed. they are a lier and deceiver.

Malecke

I'm curious when you say that possession is a way for a demon to gain access to our world

I thought they were already here in our world and, depending on your viewpoint, pretty much in control

What are their limitations, why do they need to possess a body in order to gain access?

there are all manner of demons. greater, lesser. the greater demons have control, yes. as they are all around us. the lesser demons are the ones that have to find gateways into the world.

And I never meant to bash anything, sorry about that. I just get opinionated sometimes, lol. Anyway, possesion is a way for lesser demons to get to torment people they may not normally get to torment.

just an opinion based on years of study and satanic following. I have no actual proof of this. just my thoughts.

wow, exorsism is quite a confusing subject. i'm going to say that there is no moral understanding to the subject. it's basicaly satan sending demons to try and kill us. satan the unruley bastard. god has always seemed to prevail... this may seem kind of weird coming from my mouth because i'm atheist, but if there was a god then that would be my belief

I actually think that exorcism itself is quite simple, its a matter of will and being convinced that you're in the right.

The strongest will wins, if this makes an ill person believe that something is being driven out of them and they get better - that's good

If there was a demon possessing them that is driven out by the same strong will, that's good too

I would imagine that performing an exorcism is dangerous - not only could you really mess up the 'possessed / ill' person - you might have their will being stronger than yours and have you doubting and eventually believing that you too could be possessed

I can most deff tell the different opinions from everyone. However it is what I was looking for..There are so many differences and reason and explanations to the toic at hand that it is really hard to even know where to begin. It most deff does refer itself back to the Bible which is another topic in itself. And to respond to a comment refering to the fact of getting a good thread closed...I can say that I really do feel that this is a good topic otherwise I would not have put it on here and I will wait until the extreme last minute before closing this thread...I feel that there is more to be said about it!

I'd have to say that I disagree with the view that the Catholic church covers up excorcisms to keep people from panicing. It's not like the idea is a foreign idea. Many cultures world-wide believe in possession, sometimes not even demonic possession; if you take a look at Voodooism or Santaria, the faithful will invite the spirits of things deemed good into themselves. This is a possession...just not the "evil" kind that movies portray and lookie-loos into Catholicism see. And of course, you get PLENTY of American folks going to church every Sunday who claim to be overtaken by the Spirit and speak in tongues. Every. Freakin. Sunday. It's normal in the world they've created for themselves.

What it comes down is that people decide for themselves what they believe in. If the Catholic church went public with it, and by that I mean giving reports of excorcisms to the media because it's not as though the Church denies the practice of excorcism, some people will be freaked out, yes. But to what extent? Will it really cause world-wide chaos? I don't think so.

This goes into a different but related subject of the psychology of people existing in the modern era balancing spirituality and the "real" world. Going to church, going through the motions of being faithful is prominent in American culture. (Seeing as how I've never lived anywhere else or visited for longer than a couple weeks I really would be a douchebag if I tried to include other cultures right now.) But it seems as though there is this don't-tell policy pervading it in regards to the nitty-gritty of spirituality; which is what is possibly going on with us, right beside us, for the most part unseen and unfelt.

I'm going to have to start another thread, aren't I? Grr. I feel it in me bones.

I would like to think that while vile things that are outside of ourselves (demons?) can affect things here and there, they'd like to have a body so they can have a direct impact.

For instance, in most religions there is some kind of tiered system, with various demons being responsible for certain realms, lessers, etc. Like a corporation :P.

So something having dominion over say, birds, might want to do something else, and thus want to acquire a human body so it can have that experience.

That could, however, explain why birds wait until you wash your car to crap on it.

LOL skully418,

I clean cars for my Saturday job and I agree with that 110%

This leads us off a nice angle if anyone wnats to take it up - could it be that animal possessions are more common than human.

Would anyone notice if a bird was possessed and, if a bigger animal, was possessed it would simply be killed without much more investigation

What are all these exorcisms people are going to ?

The last church-approved exorcism is very well documented as being in 1976. Even then the guidelines said that onlookers are forbidden (either to keep the outcome secret or to prevent the exorcised spirit scooting straight into a new human)

Are the exorcisms that people are talking about some sort of DIY or wiccan ceremony?

I do believe in possesion. Now I am sure plenty of insane people have been wrongly acused of being possessed, but I think some of them were possessed as well as some of the serial killers.

I think the reason the Catholic keeps exorcism under rapps is pure publicity. they do not want people thinking they are wierd.

Raistlin is correct about the possesion, or at least in most ways I believe the same.

But I have been 'victim' to excorisim. In anothor thread I mentioned that I had been shunned from many churches and one in particular (my human parents as members) tried to excorsize a demon out of me. I will never forget the feeling I had. . . the rage I felt as they chained me down. . . .and tried to 'pull' the demon from me. The pain (physically and spiritually) that I felt was like none I could ever explain or put into words.

Excorisim is the worst act a person can do to another being. I rather had been killed than to go through what I did. Yes, I did say that, Excorisim is worse than murder.

I'll leave it at that.

*Raises an eyebrow* With NO due respect at all, it isn't possible to KILL a demon unless you are imbued with the power of the saints themselves. This is not a laughing matter. Please stop treating it as such.

Just to take up Nite's point on the power of the saints.

I know that an exorcism is supposed to drive a demon out of a possessed body, but I didn't think it killed anything - or maybe I misunderstood the point being made there

Artemka, you got the point. You can only banish demons back to hell. As I stated previously, you'd have to either be a saint or an Archangel to actually KILL one. Otherwise it's just not possible.

1) Usually a Possession is simply someone sinking so far into self-doubt they allow another part of their conscious to take control, or free themselves. An Exorcism works solely on the basis of the Placebo Effect, being that if the victim of an Exorcism were to believe enough that the simple Ritual would cure them, it would be so.

2)The Church hides Exorcisms because of their reputation with them. Exorcisms also have too strong of ties in Pagan Belief, and for the Church to promote a Paganistic Ritual would be disastrous.

I think people can some times ask for it by messing with thing so interact with such things . But at the same time I think it has to do with your energy . If it is strong you don't have to worry for such things . I believe they keep it a secret because they need to be private about such manners . To see such a thing must be horrible and lots of people wouldn't be able to handle it .So it's better to keep it from the public eye.

i feel exorcism have to happen but not in the way the church and movies make it out to be. the reasons for an exorcisim would have to be possesion of the body. possesion occurs for a few reasons, a weak soul, you invite them(can accidentally) or if you believe, god let them(may occur)

living in a physical world a person comes to know only the physical aspects and finds it hard to believe in the spiritual, a sighting like that offers a glimpse into that realm. you see people as a whole are unpredictable and panicky. people are effected by each other like a symbiote so you would want to keep a sketchy matter like this out of sight of the people but not the individual person.

From what I've seen, most exorcism (with a few rare exceptions), is largely the acting out of an imagined sin. The few exceptions that I have seen are mostly a battle of wills with an actual entity.

As I've posted in the past, my parents performed excorisims all the time, when I was a child it terrified me. As an adult I feel there are many times we invite the demon or spirit, sometimes willingly others accidently. Either way knowing what your doing is most important, so that you don't get tangled in what you may not be able to handle.

As far as the church goes, in my experience people like to only practice what's within, for lack of a better term godlike. They don't like dealing with the dark one, and if something happens, of course you cause it and your not right with god. I wouldn't say that the church shuns it, I suppose they handle it the best way they feel they know how.

I am a firm believer in demonic possessions and the purpose of exorcisms is to cleans an individual of these demons. I am not positive as to why the Catholic church covers up the performance of exorcisms. It could be as simple as they do not want to create a media circus around the event when it is taking place.

Well said. Creation of a media circus would cause others to lose faith in the church, and make life considerably harder for all involved in the exorcism.

I have no answer for part two so I won't even try to bullplop my way through that one. But in response to part one I do believe that it takes something as extreme as possesion to make the world see that good and evil do exsist. Most of use have just stopped believing in anything and that is sad. But if someone is truly possesed by the dark prince then that's a little harder to refute.

The feeling of vulnerability of the church is probably the cause for hiding the fact that they do it, and also for evading the questions when ask, and most of the time its all kept secret, and only a few are aware of the event.
Its probably a way to make sure to keep the place of power and strongest image of streight.

The reason in my opinion that the church does not want people to know is because the church does not want people to panic i don't thimk but at the same time they don't want people to know that it happens because the church is usually the one that has to perform the exorcism and they don't like to do that

personaly i think that they wished for it to be a secret was for the protection of the person they were poforming it on. another reason i'v came up with is if somthing went wrong.

the chatolic church see's it as a form of "dark magic" or evil forces at work. they try and cover it up so the church still looks good. (their gettin ggood at covering things up wouldnt you say?) things ive learned from excorisims are that if something is bound to happen it will happen no matter what. when the church intervenes nothing good can come from it. they may try and ward off the evil spirit but it if wants to be there, than bloody hell its gunna stay or take the perosn with them.

Excorisims are not suppose to be done by Humans. They were ment for Jesus and the Angels to do. And some how Humans claim they can cast out a demon.

And the Catholic Church is well.. Meh Ive been to a Catholic Church it had demons in it.

I think exorcisms are bogus and catholics are just plain weird.. no offense to anyone. But my uncle is catholic. he and anyone associated with him think they can do no wrong just because they are catholic.. where the fuck is the logic in that?

FYI..............

DIY exorcism lands woman in the dock.

(Tuesday, April 10, 2007 METRO London.)

A Russian woman has tried to exorcise a 'possessed' friend - by repeatedly stamping on her chest.

Ludmilla Topalov trampled over 46-year-old Irina Sytchev after being told the Devil had taken her over.

But Ms Sytchev died in the attempt to save her - and 32-year-old Ms Topalov has now been arrested by police in the Russian city nof Archangelsk.

The arrested woman told police: 'She told me she was possessed and asked me to beat her to drive out the devil.

"It was the devil that killed her in revenge."
