I hope that my question/ post is not insulting anyone on here for It is just a thought and a question as to what others think on this...
I have read countless books and novels on Vampires, Lycans and Magik...
After my last book i was wondering..
With all of these books and novels, could there be some truths to some of what these authors print? Do they maybe have no idea? I am just curious as to how the get their information adn what research they have done. To me some depictions have just hit home at some point with feelings and impressions and magik...

i hope that my post has made some kind of sense to thsoe readin this.. if not i will gladly reply with some sort of easier explanation...

Books as well as any other source of information contain both truth and fiction. The best way to get to the truth is by getting as much information as possible and comparing it to what you already know. Sifting the truth out of what you read can be a lot of work, granted but it will in the end give you the truth.

I've found that some books really hit close to my own beliefs also. Which makes me wonder what the author actually knows instead of what they are just making up.

Yeah, alot of books do hold the truth(in so many words lol) But there are some out there that that go overboard.

I have sometimes wondered if that was done on purpose so ppl wouldn't have the room to believe.

It depends on what books you have read

Some books are pure fantasy, others are quite well researched and have included many older myths about vampires.

The problem is that they often take bits of myths and combine them to mak ethe plot more attractive.

These books are then used by other authors as sources as the confusion becomes deeply rooted.

Many people take the lead of the books to guide their vampiric lifestyle as it develops. These people then read other books are find them close to their own lifestyles

heh...god...I really don't miss those sort of replies.

I do think there may be some truths to certain books. Most good authors do tons and tons of research before they write something and put it out there. Even if it is just made up you can pretty much assume that they dug into some mythology from around the world and incorperated it into their work.

LOL Morrigon, what sort of replies hehehe ?

I also think we should bear in mind that just because you see something in a lot of different places doesn't mean there is a spark of truth behind it.

A lot of authors will share ideas and often act as 'advisors' in the screenplay of movies etc. You only have to read the DVD covers to realise this

Oh I don't know artemka, take a wild guess :P

I thought we were discussing more along the lines of books rather than movies but that is true as well....I'm not saying I think everything they say is true but I do think that the really good authors will research and incorporate certain facts into their storytelling and blend it with mythology.

That to me is what makes a really good book, having parts that could very well be true or happen mixed in with fantasy...Fun stuff :P

Absolutly, the majority of these authors do research the subject. However the vast portion of the books are simply 'hollywood" a romantisized dark hero or evil vilian.
All stories. myths, legends etc are based in some truth. The problem is figuring out what is truth and what is fiction.

When I read a book or watch a movie I do look for the deeper meaning of it. This might be a little off topic but its true. Do not look at what they portray look at why the character is doing something. (This can be something like, true love will always be, love can give power to those that need it, what it takes to be a real hero ect...)

Then later go see if how its been pro trade in of its self is right. So if it fits a little with reality then that is either happen stance or they went a found someone that had the knowledge to go and help make it be as real as they could. But trully the only people that know where they got there ideas from is them.

honstly speaking one thing to keep in mind.... and as cheesy as it sound the brothers grimm shows this.... to all fairytales there is a truth behind it. whether it is small and the author elaberated the idea or if there was only change to a small part of it, there is always a truth of some sort behind a myth/legend/fairytale/etc...

That is what I am trying to comprehend now HellsGuardian69, I have read so many books and yes there is much romance and erotic in them but i am struggling with some of the information. It is not that I do not believe the whole book, just i just would like to know how much of this information they have gotten and has any of it been personal.. And if it has.. Are they not lettin gout some secrets that some vampires/lycans/witches..etc.. hold dear?
I know that in my beliefs there are jsut some things that we do not let public...

there are some truths to everything. some not as much as others, but nonetheless they contain a partial truth. after all, many of our personas take after the archetype that humanity has built up over the years.

one of my current muses is centered on the topic of "what makes reality?" and one of the lines of thinking is that putting it down on paper or talking about it brings a portion of the whole into reality.

I think some authors do a lot of research and have a strong mix of fact and fiction... but many its all imagination. So it would be important to do a little research on the author find out where they get their inspiration from... but as with many things always take it with a grain of salt.

Almost all legends begin with some grain of truth. Exactly what that is may be difficult to find. Most of the books on the supernatural that have come out in the last decade or so have been written to cater to a market trend; no truth whatsoever.

i don't think that the writers of books have any knowledge or experience, they probably just summed up everything they've heard to come up with something of their own. and i don't believe any of the vampires would be writing books cuz i don't really wanna be a huge attraction... unless that person is stupid and wants to get killed

Depending on the Author and the book written, some books do hold the truth. Others are just Hollywood fiction. Some books talk of a deep connection during the exchange of blood, this is true. Some books say we can change into bats, lol, very false.

When reading books like that I find it best not to believe anything as a solid fact. If I connect with something, I take it and use. And agree that me and the author have similar opinions. Opinions is the key word here. Everyone has them and uses them in books. Nothing is true except what you decide to be for yourself.

The ideas of another can help a lot, but make them your own..don't take it word for word. If there is even one thing you don't like about an idea, change it and make it your own. A fact is something that only one person can decide on to be true for themselves. ;)=

Your post makes sense to me :) I often wonder the same thing after reading any book on the paranormal. When it comes to fiction novels, most authors(the credible ones at least) do research on "factual" information of the paranormal and other related topics.

One of my personal theories when it comes to fictional novels is that if authors don't research anything that is historical based on their topics they're writing about, they just KNOW the information somehow. I hope that makes sense!

There is of course another point to bear in mind.

When you already know certain truths, if someone "Accidentaly" puts such truth down on paper you eyes will e drawn to it an amazed by the accruracy you percieve.

Its much like when you buy a new car, you may think suddenly they are everywhere, its not that suddenly everyone has bought one, but rather that your now noticing them.

It would take a reader that has done their own research on the subject to pick out the "truth"s. This after all only mythology and legend and age doesnt equate to whether or not something is real.

Alot of these pieces ride on the coat-tails of ledgends , myths , and half-truths , all whith-out a doubt, have a tawdry escapist quality we have all come to know and love , and in some cases act out, in the pursuit of entertainment and or the sheer need to be part of something larger than our-selves.

as an author, I make sure that I research things thoroughly before putting them into my books. I want to make sure whatever I right is as close to the truth as possible, but not every author feels that way. Some go with whatever idea pops into their head at the time, providing it looks good on the page or furthers the plot

I think the authors do research basics maybe but they could add some of their own ideas to make the story have some oomph in it.

I think ones imagination has the biggest role to play when writing a novel, without imaginative thinking there would be nothing.

I most defiantly believe that sometimes- authors inadvertently right truths, even if they've never had such experiences before, or any previous knowledge of a happening.

I believe that alot of authors have alot of truth to their stories, but, I also think they use alot of truth and bend it, so to speak, to make the story a little more exciting and adventurous. It goes both ways.

In my opinion, truth is a relative term based solely on what the individual belives to be true.

Any good author always does research into what he or she writes about, and my guess would be that authors of novels on vampires, lycans, magic, and the like, delve deep into the myths, legends and lore surrounding the subject.

While I believe myths and legends to be largely fabricated, I'm a firm believer that all myths and legends have a basis in fact.

There's a broad spectrum between fact and fiction in the Vampire department. Most novels written about vampires seem to have been collaborated with general myths and word of mouth. But, on the other hand, many Magick books seem to have sublime, cryptic meanings within their pages. I believe it depends on what material you're reading, exactly.

well I think some hold alot of truths, it depends on the Author and if they did real research on the subject just like anything written. You have the ones whom want to get the facts out there and others who just are trying to make a buck on writting things that hold an interest to people. Just my opinion is all.

I am going to guess that the trashy vampire romance novels do not intentionally hold any kernels of truth.

It depends on the author and the nature of the story.. some may have dreamt up a concept and gone with it.

Some may have had a experience in R/L and wish to write of it.
Some Myths even have a truth at the basis.
Behind Lies, there is always a truth.
so as someone aforementioned, there is truth in anything.

I personally believe that there is truth behind every story and legend. If the legend has been told over and over for a long time then there has to be some truth behind it.

About the only truth in fiction about vampires is that they feed off other humans and or animals. Most of the rest is based off of old myths and legends that are based on a lack of knowledge of disease and what happens to a corpse after death. The rest is pure fantasy made up by the author. Some of the people used in the stories may have exsisted but that doesn't really mean they were undead or super human.

I think most research is on popular myth, gothic culture, and folowing particular trends of course. I do not think in most cases that philosophy is considerd enough, but everyone has a different opinion. I personally think there is no more than that.

my personal opinion is that there are some authors that do a lot of research to find out what is truth and what is fiction.. but authors are out to sell books above all else. I am not saying that all stretch the truth just to sell books but it is their livelihood..

I think that all books, stories, etc, are always based on some truth. Fiction or non-fiction there is always a little bit of truth.
