It is said that there exists a code in the Bible and if one searches a book, say Gensis for example and it produces letters. When Israeli mathematicians put the code together it produced the name of the person and date of his assassination.

I am thinking that is borderng a little on the supernatural, and making less of the Bible.

What is your opinion?

I think that if you read into anything deep enough you might be able to come up with a code... but to actually have that come up right.... too many variables to be coincidence

I think it's a bunch of B.S..

The shows I have seen on this show these "Scholars" doing this work on printed pages of a modern book. The original "Bilbles" were hand written on parchment scrolls. Each one is unique as to what content is on which "page" of the scroll, based on the individual scribe's handwritting.

To say that it is "Mathmatihcal Proof" of a hidden code because on "page 223" of Leviticus they found the English words "Lincoln", "Ford" and "Booth" is just assinine, in my opinion.

can't possibly work. for a start - which bible? gideon's? guttenburg's? king james? the bible has been rewritten, and re-translated so many times and into so many languages that nobody has a clue what was written in the original bible - if there ever was one. trying to read a code into a book written in english that is based on a book written in latin, that in turn was based on a book written in greek, which is supposedly translated from aramaic, or hebrew, or whatever ancient scroll was the source is so vague, there is no way you can find a code within it. any possible code would be instantly rendered meaningless with the first translation.

many of today's "prophets" have tried to teach there is a code throughout the bible. Of course it is always interpreted to their advantage. I even read a true crime book where this man had his "people" living in the woods. He found one of these "codes" and decided God needed a sacrifice. They befriended a family and later executed them all, there were several children.
The bible has been translated and re-translated so many times I believe any kind of code would have been lost long ago.

I do not think there is a code that was there from "God". Man has made many interpretations since the original document. And there have been too many translations to count.

However, I do think that whomever has found this code.....had way too much time on thier hands...lol

Karnstein, KCRC , Elemental.. yes that is what I was thinking also as how could this be right considering there is only one originial Bible, but consider this a minute. If our theory is right; then why did scholars and learned intelligent men spend so much time researching this? There must of been a reason.

People love the question "what if". Often it leads to some interesting studies, but over time these are often more of a personal entertainment or obsession than true studies.

Often when people try to find these meanings they are very fixed on what they want the outcome to be. So no matter how much they find that is contrary they will not stop, or even change their stance.

It is their faith that they have solved something great, their zest to be written down. I view it as their attempt at immortality.

emerald,

I think people study such things so that they can find a REASON for things....even when some things are not explainable. Some people can not take things on faith or supernatural (whatever you call it) they HAVE to have a reason....even if they have to create it.
My two cents anyway.

I think it's a load of garbage myself. Those "codes" are nothing more than nonsense. There are too many translations of the Bible and nothing really pops out saying "Here I am". Even if they were true, there is no value because one cannot predict future events using such techniques.

If you stare hard enough at a bunch of dots, they make a picture.

If you stare long enough at a cloud, it forms a shape.

If you obssess about the Bible, eventually you will find a way to make something that is not there like this code you have mentioned.

If you take a room full of monkeys and give them typewriters, they will eventually correctly type each word of the Bible... if they should live long enough to do so.

So unless they are discussing the Hebrew texts, then technically I must say that it is not going to work. The study must be done in the orginal text, not the translations.

Also, remember that the bible is a conglomerate. It has many authors, spanning many centuries. It is kind of hard to keep a "code" going that long, without losing its purpose. In addition to this, the order and wording of the bible we know today was voted on. Things are missing or excluded. Wouldn't that put a bit of a kink in the "code?"

Which original text. it's not like someone wrote a book.... Just bits and pieces pit together, not even in the same language...
So there's no real original book.

As for codes: No matter which language you want to read the bible in, it's large enough to find any combination of letters in it. And due to the size it's also possible to make up a (pseudo-)mathematical description.
Did that at the university way back --- just to mindf... those fundis.

Since Hebrew letters also have a numerical factor, it is no wonder that a computer can find random words. It's built into the system. Mostly likely you can also find your own name in the bible. The software is now for sell.

Like most others here I can't see it.

It certainly can't be a code from God or Jesus because they didn't write the bible.

The language differences and bible versions don't make it practical. I guess it is possible for a modern code to be worked in there somewhere.

Its like reading something into a pack of cards : 52 cards - 52 weeks in a year / 4 suites - 4 seasons / 12 nobel cards - 12 months ... OMG a code !

Just to clarify, Drosnin uses the Torah, the old testement, which has been meticulously reproduced over the centuries.

Certainly, some mistakes will be present, but Rabbi's are noted for their attention to detail.

Artemka,

Using math in cards is a very old tradition, linked again to Kabbalistic rites and even the Tarot is laid out in a mathematical formation and process.

See now I have to disagree that you find code anywhere. Patterns are very hard to create, let alone crack.

Stabb- I have read a bit about who you reference, yet I am still a skeptic when it comes to most. There are those that do this better than others, and Sevenn was kind enough to remind me of the movie Pi.

My point is there are many that try to pass themselves off as creating or decoding the Bible that do not have the proper training or are using a laughable translation as the basis for their claims.

You bring up excellent points about the math involved and how nearly impossible it is to translate directly a language that is more based off of pictures. Even though they use words, those words have far more value both metaphorically, lyrically if you would, when they are written. To just be spoken there is the image that is forgotten by non-native speakers, and so much of the mystry that we do not understand. These languages are more of words from pictures, where in English we must make pictures through our words. A profound difference.

Mathimaticaly the Bible Code can not be brushed off. It is interesting that is only exists in the Old Testement. In the Bible God says that that there are things written with in that only time will uncover, until recently we could not have made much of this Bible Code. It also says that all the book in the world could not contain the knowledge held with in.

I believe it, Ive done the math :)

If you start with an answer like the twin towers and work backwards to a code you can find the words in any book the size of the bible. When these people do thier "decoding" they start with what they want to find and work backwards until they find the words they want. It's like the people that say that santa claus is really satan because santa and satan have the same letters and claus sounds like claws. When the real truth is its mispronunciation of saint nicholas. I'm sure there may be some code in the bible but by the time anyone figures it out it will be to late.

Artemka, if I may point out the obvious, the numbers form the same cycle of the year as our calendar. It is that correlation that makes it a useful tool for divination in search of trends in one's life.

But yes, codes are found in a lot of things. And where there isn't a straight out code, there IS usually a pattern. And in that pattern lies correlation to something else entirely.

It is these relationships that form modern science and a good portion of occultism and mysticism. Unfortunately, a lot of that has to deal with what's already known vs what is unknown. Perhaps the ultimate goal of the mystics is to find what the patterns point towards in hopes of possibly discovering something "new".

I agree with previous posts, that math codes can be derived from almost anything. The practice of numerology is very old and probably predates the Bible.

The code question I have heard of most involves just how much of the texts, selected to be the Bible, refer to events of the time they were written or to prophetic events.

I think that too many people are motivated to make something out of nothing, especially with the popularity of 'The DaVinci Code'. It was a great read, don't get me wrong, but the fallacies presented as 'fact' make me want to weep.

Same thing with this 'Bible Code'. Seriously. I could probably take some magazine like YM and find a secret code that foretells the apocalypse and postulates the existence of a pink-footed red polka-dot platypus.

I'm not to sure about codes. I believe that the Bible is an incredible set of historical documents that somehow managed to survive through the years. Many of the stories told in the Bible are very one-sided, giving only the writers view of events thus many of them should be taken with a grain of salt. Plus there are many, many books of the Bible that are not published in the traditional King James version. The Apocrypha contains many stories of Jesus as a child growing up. The boy grew up with these strange powers and was not always the great good man he is portrayed as an adult. He was a naughty little boy at times and on occasion abused his powers out of revenge or spite. It is a great read.

Liebe,
I have no doubt Stabb has other resources, but this link is excellent in giving a "fair" layman's explanation to the different types of ELS, why it was thought to be significant and more importantly why it was used in the rabbinical community which is known for high levels of scholarship and detail. I hope you enjoy this:

I started to write an article on this
There is a code its called the mene tekel code, it started with the writing on the wall at babylon, the code has apparently unravelled the bible, there have been riddles, prophecies AND images found in the bible using this code. Apparently saddam appears in there...
here is a link to the best website i've found about it: Mene tekel code

I believe the bible is just a nice fairy take, but the morals of some of the stories are true. No offence intended, just a personal opinion.

I think you could probably produce a code from a large quantity of books...Although some that are producing names, dates of death and how they died is not a coincidence

Glad I am not the only one that thinks that Hell... you can find codes and conspiracies in anything if you look and want it badly enough. I have read that there are alien messages in the bible, so people will do anything to get a theory across or idea to sensationalize or down grade something.

Do not forget that much of the original biblical material has been edited and redacted many times. Besides one can take anything and make it a code

Also the mene tekel code the hidden codes are supposed to be God direct words.

The key to the code is the old babylon mystery, "The Writing on the Wall" which had baffled scholars. This key allows you to find very complex messages and pictograms within the bible as well as prophecies, allegedly

A code can be created from anything if you spend enough time looking too deeply into things. For instance, I came up with a secret code on a box of cereal this morning about the end of the world! :)

I think the Bible is a mix of different stories. When you think of things like the Davinci Code, even though it is supposedly fiction, one cannot help but wonder. I believe that there are probably hidden messages in the Bible. With all that secret society stuff, it's gotta be true!

I adore eccentric people, and I was talking to a good friend of mines who is defnately one, and we were discussing this subject. Well *coffs* he reckons that the code exists because Aliens planted it and when they return to Earth they have to find their roots. Haha, okay I like to keep an open mind, but what do you think?

anyone can make codes out of anything. especially the bible. it has been around for so long adn been studied for so long that it can be easy to find a code or hidden innuendo within it that actually makes sense.

im not opposed to it. but im also skeptical. as u have to be with these kinds of things sometimes.

Thanks for posting the links ishta, it's too bad people are more into just jumping on the nay sayers bandwagon.

This is one of the codes that I haven't had enough exposure to, but have heard some good things about in how it is viewed. Although it makes sense to me that there would be a code put into the original text, since as many people have said since it was written it has been translated and edited many many times.

And doesn't the bible tak about the road being narrow? ;)

No problem

The strange things about the mene tekel code is that the actual key, was the famous writing on the wall in bablyon:

On the night mighty Babylon fell to the Persians, this writing appeared on the palace wall: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN", written with the finger of God, (Daniel 5:25). The king of Babylon was having a huge drunken party. They felt safe and secure surrounded by the cities massive walls. But suddenly came the hand of God writing on the wall. Revelry turned to fear. The wicked king and his astrologers were baffled. They could not read nor interpret what the writing meant!

Then the terrified king called for Daniel the prophet. By the light of a candlestick, Daniel both decoded and interpreted the writing. It foretold the immediate end of Babylon and her king. And so it came to pass. On that same night the king of Babylon was slain by her Persian conquers; a new era was born."

And the intricate coding is WAY beyond what they were capable of way back when. There is a good slide show presentation on it at that site above.

and heres something else for your end of days pleasure:

Most mysteries in the Bible have already been unveiled by the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mk. 4:11; Rom. 16:25; 1Cor. 2:7; Eph. 1:9; 3:3-9; Col. 1:26-2:2; Revelation 1:20). All further illumination of the Scriptures must therefore conform to and be built upon this finished apostolic foundation (Eph. 2:20), otherwise it is heresy.

There is one mystery expressly said to be "sealed until the time of the end," (Daniel 12:4, 9-12).

"Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end…None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days" (Daniel 12:9-11).

I think the so called bible code is non-existant, it's only found because they wanted to find it if you use a sequence to calculate the letters and everything you are bound to come up with something, they also used the same code for other books such as moby dick and came up with results that they got in the bible denoting that the code is crap it is just chance that was stumbled across and they think it is true because they want it to be true.

Following the "line of crap theory" that there are codes in many books, could one not argue that perhaps the codes are there because the books were inspired by spirit to get a story out there.

Let's play with conspiracy here, if there is a bible code, then why would it be limited to only the Bible for the message. Why would a higher power be limited to just speaking to us through one book. Would they not attempt to speak through any means possible?

Just something to chew on if you would.

No I'm not saying that is a conspiracy by any means, I'm just playing the opposite side.

To me the presence of a code means that there are messages. If there are messages, why would they only be given once? Why not again and again through other forms of inspired work.

That was all I was trying to say, especially since so many people were just naysaying the idea with no explination or discussion. Trying to get people to think is all ;)

Ah that was referred to the dude above me, and the mene tekel code its not just hidden text, its pictogram as well, and as for the only the bible thing, its the most read book to date, everyone is aware of it. If you were going to hide a message why not put it in one of the only books to stand the test of time and still be "popular".

Perhaps there was a bit of truth to this when the bible was FIRST written.
I mean the bible that is not what we have seen today...

But man has corrupted everything so much, and so many different versions of the bible have been produced that I do not believe that this be anything more than a myth

Supposedly every scripture has a specific "code" in it. But if you are dealing with the original languages that they were transcribed in and use the numerical equivalents to the letters that existed BACK THEN....I'm sure you could even produce the day and year of the end of the world....OH MY...I'm sorry, they already did that...and irt was supposed to end in 1970...gee golly gosh willikers....we're still here...duh!
But there will always be arguments among "scholars" who are trying to push their personal beliefs in relation to either their personal egos or to their "Race"
Many "scholars have agreed that the Book of Genesis had come from old Cuniform writings and later on through the ages transcribed into Aramic (Hebrew) and then into Ashuric-Syriac (Arabic today) and all the way down to today(English)
"Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat"
I'm not saying that there are no "messages" within the scriptures that have yet to be discovered or have already been discoverd; Revelations is a good point since it was given to John via "Jesus" (Son of Man) Much of what is happening today was written about in Revelations, but you have to know what you are reading in order to fully grasp what is being said.
The English is "fair" as translations go but many, many, many passages should be deciphered in the "original" languages where meanings are more understood according to the words used. THAT is part of the problem, the English is far from what has been written in the "original" tongues and the meanings of many things therein are either not fully understood or lost entirely.
THE major problems in the Middle East NOW are due to uneducated people (THE Major Population) being guided by individuals that are only seeking personal gain and power, they are on a VERY costly ego trip that is causing thousands of lives to be lost daily because of their EGO.
Religion has been used for centuries as an excuse, by both sides, (Christian & Arab) to gain more and more personal wealth for the elite....funny how the elite (Christian & Arab) don't hold themselves accountable to their own faith.

The bible was a book written by people long long long............long time ago....then it was re-written & re-written...man (the church) made the book to their liking, some of the book may have started off true but the truth disappeared with their morals, their way of thinking, there points on how you live life & what you should or shouldnt do....the bible was made & re-written by hypocrits and my personal opinion of it is that its a load of bullshit...! Im sorry if i offend anyone with my opinion but thats just the way i see it...i grew up with the bible & was made to study it by my nan....their are no hide codes or messages other than to life your life true to yourself, not to anyone else!

I don't think there's such a code in the Bible... since the Bible was originally written long ago by many people, and most of the parts it originally contained, were prohibited by the Catholic Church, so, I think that somebody must be blind if pretends to find a code in a mix of books with lots of different interpretations...

Exactly, over the millenia the bible has been translated (incorrectly at times) into countless renditions, which futher spin off more books. These books spin off futher beliefs and each new belief interprets the books in their own specific way. This leads all kinds of absurd coincidences which these religions claim as proof of devine nature and will. Personally, this is one of the many reasons I am not religious.
