I am currently reading about karma. It said something interesting and I was wondering as to all of your thoughts on this.

Wikipedia defines Karma as: "Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. It is cumulative."

Connecting to Your Past Lives, a book on reincarnation is what I am currently studying. It stated that we are fully aware during our non-body state and we choose the people and events we need around us to achieve our ultimate goal during our waking life.

The people we choose have karmic connections with us and we have different types of connections or (to use the more common term) souls we draw on...including our soul mate.

Do you feel this to be true? Do you believe we choose connections with others that we have a karmic history with?

"will do" I don't think I have ever thought of Karma in that fashion. If it is already laid out what you will do, isn't it in essences saying that your karma is pre-determined ?

More like saying you pick the people that will affect your karma to try and get the best outcome.

But as always it adds up.

Myself I would say we know the person when we see them in this life (that we marked them from some other time).

The big thing is how do we know how strong of mark did we give them.

Plus remember even if you marked someone in a last life. You will find people that effect you just as much that you did not intend in your life. These are the ones that are most likely the strongest you might find. Good or bad.

While I do believe in the cause and effect factor of karma (or "what goes around comes around") I don't believe our karma is suggestive to those we opt to keep company with. Rather, karma is attached to the individual and their life choices/actions. Should karma negatively effect me because a friend I had in childhood became a serial killer? Nope. Karma is about balance. (*sighs* good ol' wikipedia... endless fount of knowledge)

TheCryingDutchess they way I do see it. They would haft to stay in your life for there karma to affect you. Though with there brief time with you something did adjust you in some way.

But then again you just say your karma attracts people that have simler goals and such.

Hi Law *grin*
While a person may make an impression on you for whatever period of time, that doesn't necessarily mean it restructures the way you approach your own life. Nor would it be a factor in your karma. Your karma is just that, YOURS. Influences come from all angles, it's the choices one makes that effects the overall karmic circle.

As for whether or not past lives come in contact with one another thusly influencing the karma of an individual, I can't say I believe that. We may meet up with "familiar souls" (for lack of better wording) but again, it's the choices of the individual that decide their karmic fate.

I'm hoping I understood you properly, Law...

i think my karma attracts people of like mind and goals for the most part...
i don't know how else to explain the immediate feel of closeness i get with certain people when i first meet them
like a pull that is neither of our doing directly
and they are usually people who are good for me... encouraging in all areas of my life
some have even opened up creative doors for me
i would never have started a business with my photography if it hadn't been for a couple of these people
it's very amazing
i think i still could have ignored the doors that opened, so it didn't mess up my free will
i was searching for a way to do something more and the people i drew to me opened the way

Im not sure about drawing others energys and karma.. but i think we all end up finding the ones loved the most from our past life now in our persent life.. if u have a strong enough connection with that person, ull always want to see them again...

about the whole picking our lifes karma works before it comes to be.. It doesnt make any sence ot me.. Ive heard something like this before.. a morman elder told me that my 3 month old neice choose to be killed by her mothers new boyfriend.. its like saying that karma is a forse that is preordained and not a consequence of our actions.. god and bad...

just my two cents...

hmm
i don't agree with what you were told about your niece that's for sure
and i don't get the impression that it is foreordained, that doesn't make sense to me either...
more like with me i was drawing to me people because i was looking for something they could help with.
i could have chosen another path entirely
if we do have past lives i can totally see us drawing close to people we drew close to in other lives.. that does make sense and could explain the instant feeling of 'knowing' someone

You know, there is some sense in this Trivia.. I meet people every day.. Yet only SOME I get that amazing, instant 'click' with.. I have always had some deep affinity with that person or something interesting in common with them.

Some bare no importance and just walk on by, mutually. (a metaphor)
I can see how this could be part of the make-up of Karma and how I then treat that person and they, me.
Some people have had huge impact on my life and I have made impacts on others, lives.. I have saved a child and I have helped someone go to the other side in comfort by holding their hand while they slipped away, they had no family to be with them.

So, I guess, some people we are MEANT to meet.

Interesting thread Triv.. Thanks

Have you ever been SO low and depressed that you are looking up at the gutter with pain in your eyes from crying. and you feel a wretch.. for weeks.... Then Out-of-the-blue.. someone comes along and wakes you up, stretches out a hand, and pulls you up.. and you 'connect'.
THAT is a Karmic connection.

That is life-changing.. karma of the person that lifted you up is generated for good, and the the soul of the pullee is restored to walk again.

Krowe: Wikipedia (love that site!) says: "Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward; karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative.

This is the best definition for karma I have found that works for me. Your take might be different after you read up on the subject.

xtremehate:

This book was specific in choosing the people we interact with karmically. It says you pick the people to balance karma with in this life and/or you just plain enjoy them.

My daughter and I are one. We have been together so much we have a bond that cannot be broken. I believe she is someone I just plain enjoy being with. There is no need to balance karma with her as we are just...being us.

Minx: Your example is like mine.

I stopped for a coke today and the man next to me in line asked me about my tattoo's. For 10 min we talked about nothing and everything. We walked away smiling. That is a karmic connection.

It was brief...but just what I needed to make me look at the day brighter. In response my black, depressing day turned to one of the greatest days of my life.

I think if you also believe in reincarnation it is a tenent that you will create connections with people, karmically, and maintain them until you have resolved whatever it is you need to resolve with them. For example, if your mother in this life was someone you knew in a previous life, and back again and again, you have a connection and your lives are bringing you together until you both resolve whatever it is. Maybe it's an issue that one or the other of you needs to face in order to move on.

Drak: I agree. This is one of the things that I found interesting while reading this information. Your sister from one life can be your dad from another. The karmic lesson dictates what role people play in your evolution. And since you might have one "soul" you have to resolve something with, it does not have to play the same role each life.

Yes and I think there's also a particular line of belief that says you try on every available role in order to get the most life experience. It's really very interesting and a bit comforting as well, say if you want kids but don't get to have them in this life, don't worry because you will have/have had other lives in which you will fulfil this.

I beleive alot of things but the karma no cause its illogical, if the karma exist then why do spirits run around and come to us for help to find their way or to get help for other thing? If there was a karma they would not need to ask for help an their would'nd be spirits

Triv.. REALLY?? Pray Tell.
I had never thought of this before.. But since I have given it thought, the whole mapping of ur paths does seem to have a 'plan' to it.

Have you noticed that all first boen children are alike to their Fathers?
It is primitive and it is designed by something.. I have NO clue, HOW this happens, But it is true.. have a look at families you know.. Check out the first-borns. It is SO Bizarre!! Cool, too.

OK, I feel this too, is a Karmic, connection.
Since the 'father' will believe the offspring is his, and he will be accepting the child and keeping the unit 'tight'.

even if you do not believe in Karma, or anything spiritual, it is generally accepted amongst psychologists that early environment and external influences go a great way to forming your personality. there is clinical evidence that children who were abused often grow up to be abusers, for instance. this is not too far removed from the karmic principle mentioned above.

Every action has a reaction.

I believe there's also an article about Karma in the Member Articles.

If we choose our actions towards others,I think it's possibly yes because even if certain behaviour is impulsive in the end we choose how we act towards others.

The Thread to connect us all and in which to decide what we do, one of the ways my friend described karma, I believe that it is real, but has its limits as well as its strengths.
In some small way It may have a role to play in the decision of the company you will keep, but it cannot completely dominate and dictate that you meet a rapist when your 13 years old and loose your mind and spirit nor can it dictate that you rise above it becoming stronger an in one way or another evolving to something that would have never come about before such an action. Granted some things as bad as they are happen for a reason unknown at the time as to why such as a life of being shunned and looked down on for your beliefs by your school mates, only to gain revenge in the sweetest way possible, rising above them obtaining that body which has them begging for a chance to be held by you and to simply ignore them, shallow as that may seem, revenge is a double edged sword. wow got off subject slightly heh, apologies.

Karma in short i believe plays its part but its importance changes as much as the winds or the soul.

I do not believe that "we" choose our karmic buddies; I believe that God has us in a complex "reality TV" set up.

Just as any good craftsman will consider how his creation will age; "He" has arranged it so that the world will develop in the most satisfactory way possible, with careful consideration of possible tangents of environement.

kglitterous...I have read your post over and over and see the logic to it. But, I have to ask...if "he" thought of all possible tangents why do we have free will?

We have a choice. We, as a species, is unique in its belief in higher powers. And, we do not have only one belief...we have the free will to make any belief our own.

I think that whatever you believe will happen to you in life. If you believe karma to be true, then it will take effect. I believe that whatever bad things you do in life, you will somehow get back a form of reprocussion. If do you many good deeds in life, you will get rewarded some how. It could be such a tiny thing, but I believe it will happen some how.

yes i do believe that karma will follow you through one life to the other just as much as i believe in reincarnation. if our bodies are just hosts then how can karma be only in the life we are living now. it is not the body that does the good or the bad its the soul itself so it would have to follow from one life to the other

i believe this to be real, as far too many times in m y life there have been people when i fitst met them, have felt that i have known them b4 or that i need to know this person and why our paths crossed. usually, these are the people that i have the deepest connections w/ and learn the most valuable lessons from. so, yes, I def believe this to be true.

Karma is dealing with the direct aura that surrounds you. It is said that if you knock anything out of place, by whatever means you do it, you are messing with faith and a response to that would be called karma. Karma is only used to make us think of our actions. Do I really believe this to be true, of course I do to a degree but only with people that believe it themselves. There are many serial killers that have no karma, why? Because they don't believe it to begin with. We create our own belief system and that system is then enforced by those around you so technically, I guess karma could be people related and could follow you around. It is all in how you look at it.

Trivia...

Free will is the envronmental factors I meant. Perhaps it would be better to think in terms of the wind and nature making natural bonzai... as opposed to the human methods used to manufacture them.

God chooses to do both. The natural bonzai are the humans discussed, and animals are like sculpted bonzai.

A lot of Karma is attached to past lives if you have killed someone in a past life or harmed them in some way then in this life you have to burn those karmic ribbons, that happens when the person you have wronged you have done right by or have died saving them from something in that way you burn that karmic ribbon and can move on to more pleasant things unless you decide to go and do more bad things.

I don't know about karma and past lives, but I do know that what you do in a life time has its consequences. The old saying "What goes around comes around."

What I have come to believe from reading and introspection and talking to people a great deal smarter than me on this is that yes Karma follows us. And in that stage when we are decideing ( as I believe we opt to return or not) if to return we have a family of souls so to speek and can return with them and would know them.. kinda the soul mate idea.. but for more than one person. Think about those people that steped in and became like members of your family but were not blood.

I also believe we "connect" with some people as in other times we either rendered aid and can count on it from them when we need it.. or people that helped us and it is now our turn to be there for them

so I think we pick some people to have about us.. and some we do not but have that connection with as well.

Feline...similar to I may have picked you to help me with my karma but you did not pick me. So, when we interact, it may not be on the level of a friendship...but we are connected in some way...correct?

Karma is an interesting concept. I don't think that it truly exists in the form of "instant karma's gonna get you". I truly believe that if such a thing as karma could be said to exist, it's only in the form of consequences for actions. We face the consequences of what we do and nothing more. If you go out and are a total jerk to people, they are going to react to you. If you commit industrial espionage, there are no consequences until you get found out. *shrug*

I suppose it could be said in terms of the past lives, you are connected to people you have been with in previous lives. I always wonder if there is a past life connection with those who I am close to in this life. There are a few people I would be interested in knowing if there is a past life connection with them.

I don't think this past life connection has so much to do with karma as it does with having energy that resonates strongly with others. As we interact with others, we grow closer in some cases. And our energy becomes similar to each other, perhaps even to the point that we carry the essence of that person with us forward. Hence the reason we state we can keep people in our hearts and minds.

These connections may endure lifetimes or perhaps even forever. Some people think that we travel the cosmos as souls in energy format. Those of us who carry strong connections to others might be of the same celestial energy family. There are a lot of interesting theories out there, it all depends upon what you choose to believe.

I wish I knew what kind of past life connection I have with a certain someone in my life now.

What an interesting idea, I had never heard of it before. I think it's possible and makes sence that we should select the people around us for our own ends i suppose, though wording it like that makes it sounds almost malevolent.

I have often felt that sometime random people we meet have a karmic connection to us somehow, not to mention those that are in our lives on a more permanent basis.

Here is a for instance. On Saturday I got all the way back home from shopping in Aberdeen and realized that somewhere I had lost my keys and for one of the only times I had walked out I didn't take my mobile phone because I thought I wouldn't be gone that long. (Yes, this really stunk!) so I retraced my steps to Morrisons, through the bathroom at Burger King and then to Boots which was closed. As I stood there looking bewildered, a gentleman asked me if I was okay. I replied simply that I had lost my keys and since my phone was locked in my flat, I was stymied. He immediately pulled out his phone, called information for where my flatmate works and got her on the phone allowing me to speak to her to get her keys so I could get back in out of the rain. (The Monsta was away at his mums for dinner and a driving lesson and besides, I didn't have my phone to call him to have him bring me his set of keys.)

The upshot of this rather garbled tale is that I immediately felt that perhaps in a past life this man had been someone that I had assisted or who owed me a small favor of some sort. I truly think we have a connection to these individuals who, albiet strangers, assist us with no thought of reward.

The other karmic implication is that I was being 'repayed' for some kindness that I have performed in this life that was done without thought of reward also.

Either way, I completely believe in karma and that the good (or bad) that we choose to do each day in each lifetime is brought forward to our present circumstances in some small measure.

It is all in how one looks at it, I suppose.

karma for me is a like a balence of life for myself either I can till it more to the good side with more good things that i do in my life or I can make my life worse by doing bad things and tilting the blance onto the bad side. that is why with karma I am always careful what I say or do because like the motion law it will have an oppsite and equal reaction to whatever I decide to do in my life.

It's an interesting idea that consciousness is maintained and even expanded in between lifetimes of reincarnation. On a spiritual level, it would make sense that if our lives are steps along a wheel and that we are always working toward a complete spiritual evolution...it would make sense that at some point in the process we would be reminded of our long term goal and be aware of our previous choices.

I don't know how one can conclude a way in which we could choose more than our form in the next life without also believing in things like fate and predestination. If we can choose who we will meet as a karmic soul mate, it stands to reason that our lives are fairly planned out and free will is lost. If on the other hand, we have realized in between lives that our connection to some is stronger, but with no guarantees of actually meeting them, then we have a karmic soul mate but maintain our free will.
