For starters it shows your reflection. The lists go from there. Shows your true self, helps to focus, tool to divine, doorway to another world, even helps to get those nose hairs you did not know about and everyone else did. lol.

Halloween spells encourage the use of the mirror too..but Minx, remember Vampires don't like them!

Okay, so why can't Vampires supposedly not be seen in mirrors, I wonder...hmm

I believe the general thought behind that was that as an undead creature, vampires no longer have a soul, and the mirror can be called a reflection of the soul. Hence, no soul, no reflection.

It is much like with Native Americans in the old west...they didn't want their pictures taken(upon the invention of cameras) because they thought a picture would capture a piece of their souls.

In some religions...they though that if you looked into a large mirror at midnight,it would open a doorway to another world full of demons and pull you in.

Hey Ems, your vampire query is interesting!

Does a mirror perhaps give a spiritual magnifyer? That may be why so many beliefs use this 'tool'???

I have had an odd experience with a mirror. I was in New Orleans about a week before mardi gras and the city was pretty empty in those days after the hurricane. I walked into the dungeon after going to a metarie parade, it was my first time there. I walked through the courtyard path (bypassing the front bar) into the courtyard and into the bar. I spoke to the bartender (about the only thing gothic besides the decore in the place) and bought a gin and tonic. Instead of accepting my tip she told me to put it in the jukebox and gave me an extra dollar to put in the jukebox as well. The place was empty, I was the only customer. I wander down the length of the bar down to where it opens up past the booth/cage. I see the jukebox to my left on the wall and I plug in some VNV and Sisters of Mercy. The verbal tour I got from the cute bartender indicated that there was another 3 bars, 2 of them was upstairs. I decided to explore the downstairs before going upstairs.

It looked like there was a larger room that opened up behind the bar so I decided to investigate that, thinking that that would be whee the flocks of goths would be. As I am about to go through the corridor this guy comes arround the corner and he nods his head to me. I start talking to him. He has his septum pierced and as I also had mine done I commented on how good his looked and asked him what guage it was. He says that it is a 10 and I comment that I just stretched miune to an 8. I say nice meeting you, I'll see you arround. He nods to me and is about to pass me on my left I make room and step forward.

Suddenly the world shifts, and I am standing in front of a mirror, the guy is gone, my reflection is in it's place but shifted over about 3 feet or so to right in front of me. There seams like a split second where I could have carried on into the next room, I hesitate and th emoment passes. I stand there a moment confused and take my first sip of my gin and tonic.

I turn arround and go to explore the rest of the bar (the bathrooms and the upstairs bars.) I had several very very odd experiences in this bar... most of which happened before I started drinking.

I continually kept going to that mirror for the next two week ( I regrette my moments hesitation, I'd rather have walked into the wall than to have missed walking into the mirror world), but it never ever looked the same... it always looked like a mirror, and there was never any sign of the room behind tha bar again.

Mirrors can also be used as a tool for 'scrying' in much the same way as a crystal ball or even a bowl of water.

I've also heard the 'myth' that if on Halloween you draw 3 6's backwards in human blood on a mirror and say the Devil's name 3 times his face is supposed to appear to you in the mirror.

I have heard many stories about mirrors, one of the strangest that I have heard states 'If all of the mirrors in the room that a person dies in are not covered then that person's soul will be trapped in that mirror.' Which I do not believe this becasue you can't always predict when a person is going to die, so if it is true then alot of people's souls would be trapped in mirrors, lol.

I never hear about the counting to 666 or something u described, but it`s sounds like the bloody marry game, u have to write on the mirror "bloody marry I love you, bloody marry i hate you, bloody marry forgive me" and u have to say it. Then u can see how she died..... it`s just a game

I think saying 666, prayers and the bloody mary one were just things people tried to have others do just to scare them, and the vampire not seeing their reflection in the mirror is just something hollywood made up...

I dont know. I think vampires hate mirrors anyway... maybie something to do with what they've become? Or reminding them that they will never be the same as they used to be.

I dont know what mirrors serve as a
scary conflict". Like counting to 666 then opening your eyes. Of course your going to see a face, its YOURS.

As I stated in another thread...666 is just the number between 665 and 667 ...has no meaning unless a person gives it one.

AS for mirrors and Vampires...if you think about it...a vampire is just a demon inhabiting the body of a dead person...so a mirror shows its true face.

I dont think it was true though. Just someone trying to scare us, I cant remember where I heard it.

Teehee Minx's isn't it interesting to find so many! OOh, btw here is the Halloween spell on Mirror's. I remember doing this one when I was teenager! (It was on that link page)

Walk backward several feet out of doors in moonlight with mirror in your hand, or within doors with candle in one hand and mirror in the other, repeating following rhyme, and face of your future companion will appear in glass:

“Round and round, O stars so fair!
Ye travel and search out everywhere;
I pray you, sweet stars, now show to me
This night who my future husband (wife) shall be.”

True Minx...but the first Candyman movie was set in Chicago...in a neighberhood I grew up not too far from...there was never anything mentioned ever there...about a Candyman nor a legend of a hooked man.

But it is true that all stories, myths and legends start from fact or a version of a fact.

It was once said a long time ago that mirrors were the gate ways from the different realms. Most magick practiced using mirrors have turned out to be quite effective. Some of the rest can be quite chilling. I have often wondered about what makes mirrors so special, so powerful.

I don't know much about the sayings like bloody mary but I have had some experiences with mirrors and what I get so far without ever even having looked into it ..is that they seem to reflect ...um how should I say this..well I guess the best way is just to tell you what I experienced. Back home in Texas, my neighbors and I went out late at night on weekends looking for haunted places ..there is a hotel downtown San Antonio that has a history of hauntings. One of them being the Emily Morgan..it is said that the 9th floor has a high level of paranormal activity..so we decided we would make that our target for that night..we went in and our excuse to be allowed to roam the hotel was that my neighbor and I were about to be married and had heard so much about the hotel that we wanted to take a look around. We quickly went up the elevators and you guessed it we went straight to the 9th floor. The first thing I noticed when the elevator doors opened was a strange smell that no one else could smell..we walked around and everyone else was in a tight circle looking to be frightened I suppose. I parted from the group and a strange feeling led me not to a room but to a wall? I sensed something right at that spot but saw nothing at all. Then I caught one of the mirrors through the corner of my eye and it moved in such a way that I thought I was having some kind of acid trip flashback..I blinked and turned my head to look straight at it but nothing...I walked towards the elevators and once again the mirrors right in front of the doors were warped or something but the feeling I got was an overwhelming feeling that things could get out of control real fast and looking straight at it this time I saw it again...it seemed that I was surrounded by things/spirits that I could have not seen otherwise. I announced to everyone that I had to leave and everyone quickly got into the elevator with me..I did not return there but had intentions too go back but without my neighbors..There is definately something there and I would like to go back some day.

Well, it's fun, and it's scary. A lot of Urban Legends evolve around saying things like "Bloody Mary" several times, or like the movie "Candy Man." If they said it 5 times, he would come and kill them. Shit, that even gives me the creeps. But the whole idea is fun, I believe, although there are some other "superstitions!"

If you think of mirrors as gateways. You also think of it this way.

The portal to your inner self can also be seen as this.

What if your inner self wants you to see something, that thing would be shown when you just so happen to look into a mirror a glimpse as to what it wants you to see. A reflection of all that you are in an image or a scene. I deep need you did not know you had, a warning that something you never have thought about might happen, and things about you that would be best left unsaid.

Mirror magic could be strong since mirrors are also used to focus light. Let me explain, you see if it can be used to focus and change the path of light, why not do the same for the path of magic in the spells? If you are looking into the mirror you could be using your power twice and using the mirror as a way to focus the magic in one direction.

Those are just some basic thoughts off of the top of my head. Given that I have not experienced any thing of note with mirrors (other then every time I look into one something does not feel right). I cannot say much more.

I personally do not believe a mirror is a gateway a gateway has to be open some way by a spell or something like that, a mirror has been used in scrying but other than that i believe a mirror is just a mirror...

Here is a real spell from an Inquisition trnsscript on Veronica Franco, the Venetian poet. The trial took place in 1580. It is not about a mirror, but uses the reflective properties of a basin of water as a method of scrying. Supposedly, this was common at the time:

"Someone stole some stuff from a neighbor and the neighbor insisted she complete the following incantation. "There were two little boys and one little girl present with their mother who lives in a house behind me whose name I do not know. The mother is the wife of a tailor who has boys and girls in school. It was the mother who fetched the basin full of water and put into it a little holy water. The woman placed her wedding ring under the basin and above it two leaves of olive branch braided in the shape of a cross. She had her children kneel down in front with a lighted candle in each hand. The mother taught the children to chant the following - Holy Angel, White Angel, by your sanctity and my virginity, show me the true one and the truth. Who took that thing? " supposedly the children gave conflicting answers and Vernonica gave them some food and shooed them away. I think she got of the witchcraft charge because she didn't invoke the name of the devil and wished harm against anyone. That chant was also common at that time.

Mirrors have played a role in superstition for hundreds of years. Where I live (and in many other places) it's custom to cover the mirrors in a home where a person died- so the body is not reflected in the mirror... because it is believe to trap the spirit in the mirror forever.

Mirrors represent a way to see through the veil.

The reflections that show us what is there. If you set your conciousness outside your ego, and put a spiritual gaze upon it, you can see what you desire, or see who you would...Or maybe its just a gift from Az, to be able to do that.

I used to play around with mirrors, looking in on the people who were around them. Its how I kept in contact with checking on the well being of a coven 3000 miles away from me.

Oh well, fun skills, useful and handy.

Darkwolfman.. Your Aforementioning has tones of the sense that ones Doppleganger is IN the Mirror?? Dark side?

It is said the Doppleganger is the darker side of oneself!

Clix, your story was quite eerie.

I myself have always looked at the mirror as a gateway to seeing the "actual" you so to say. But looked up that link (em) that was good one...

I have heard that vampires cant/wont use a mirror because they hate the things they have become.

I like the "no soul" theory better, though... not all vampires would be self loathing enough to abhor themselves.

I believe the general thought behind that was that as an undead creature, vampires no longer have a soul, and the mirror can be called a reflection of the soul. Hence, no soul, no reflection.

Well, mirrors were not only used for magic and the spells, but also for fables and fairystories. Remember, "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall..who's the fairest of them all?" For the life of me I can't remember which story that one came from now!

Once it was only the rich and powerful who were able to afford mirrors.

Perhaps these stories were a way for the peasant folk to warn the children about the danger of coveting that which they could never honestly own themselves ?

The Magic of Mirrors
By Mary Jensen

"Mirror, mirror, on the wall…"

Mirrors have long been considered mysterious objects. This is reflected in our superstitions and literature.

One of the most common superstitions is that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck. Did you know that there are also ways to reverse the curse? One method is to take the pieces outside and bury them under moonlight. Another way is to turn yourself counter-clockwise three times after breaking the mirror.

Though you don't want to live in a household without mirrors. Mirrors in the home bring good luck, perhaps because they deflect evil. But hanging a mirror too low, cutting off the top of the tallest family member's head, will bring about headaches. And beware an undisturbed mirror falling suddenly, as it portends a family member's death within a year.

A common belief in earlier history was that a mirror contains part of the soul, and that is what looks back at you. There are villains that use mirrors to trap or steal souls. Perhaps that's how the entity in the magic mirror of Snow White got there, only able to share the truth he sees.

Many stories deal with idea that another world exists on the other side of the mirror. In "Through the Looking Glass", by Lewis Carroll, Alice steps through a mirror into a surreal other world. The glass extends the vision that would have ended in a wall, doubling the size of a room. Multiple mirrors create an infinite hallway, only blocked by your own reflection. What is it that draws us to the other side?

Magic mirrors can also be used to reflect truth, scry other parts of the world, bring long life, or reflect attacks. An ordinary mirror can be used to distort an image or multiply oneself – a strategy for battle or a trick on a friend.

Harry Potter looks into the Mirror of Erised and sees his heart's greatest desire. Perseus uses a mirrored shield to reflect Medusa's stone gaze back at herself. In the movie Brothers Grimm, the Mirror Queen is young and beautiful only in the reflection of her magic mirror, but is in reality ancient and hideous. When the mirror is broken, she falls apart. In "Testament of the Dragon" by Margaret Weis, Justinian Sterling can only communicate with his Dragon Master through mirrors.

A few other interesting mirror "facts". Vampires have no reflection in mirrors. According to European folklore, pigs show aversion to mirrors. It is very unlucky to use real mirrors on stage, and an actor should not look into a mirror over another's shoulder as it would bring misfortune to the one overlooked.

What is our fascination with mirrors? Do we see in the mirror the same phenomena as "the grass is greener on the other side"? Is it our own soul looking back, or an alternate world? Or perhaps it is only an illusion.

I see mirrors as a way of someone showing their true colors in their aura...Mirrors have always shown me that I can do anything I imagine and set my mind too

As for the whole bloody mary thing....I tried it when I was in middle school...it's a bunch of rubbish...i've had more frightful things happen in my dreams then while awake....

I try to avoid mirror because back at my old house I kept seeing this guy standing behind me in them and every time I turned around he was gone. But aside from that, I heard some interesting stories about how to use them to connect with the dead as well. And I used to use it to scry, but after the results got a little scary (my face aging in the mirror, seeing another face replace mine, seeing the room being covered in blood as well as me) I stopped XD

There are many who believe that mirrors are the doorways to other realms.....that something mysterious lie on the other side. It is also believed that when one looks into the mirror as others have said you see your true self. I myself do not like mirrors.

Useing mirrors helps to increase on's power(s). when used properly a mirror can yeild great strength. i have used mirrors to replicate a spell several times over. a mirrors greatest benifit is when you face them toward eachother, this is when a mirror replicates forever giving its greatest strength.

I don't know why, but all my life since I was very little I've hated mirrors in the dark... Even before I heard stories or anything.... When I was really small like 2 or 3 my mom said I screamed until she took one out of my room she had bought..

I never told anyone because I felt stupid and then my daughter who doesn't really know my mom or talk to her so she wouldn't have heard that I had a fear has the same issue with mirrors starting at a very early age......

So I say there is something with mirrors in the dark! I don't like em and they give me the creeps when the lights go out...

(you think I'd scream when I saw myself in the mirror with the lights on hehehehe)

I think the thing with mirrors is that looking into a mirror is considered vanity and vanity was a sin. So the mirror was deemed an evil thing and a good Christian person should never be worried about what they look like and looking into mirrors at all. From there I think stories were just made about how evil they can be to keep people from using them

Damn Minx sweety what a can of worms we have opened here sweety.

Not much I can add really.

Although anything that can pass a reflection is said to be good or evil in many Pagan circles.

As well as the pathway to ones soul and a gateway to the spirit world.

I for one will not have a mirror in my place except the bathroom. After all even Druids need to shave.

I remember reading somewhere(before the net) that if you stared at yourself long enough...you could burn the image into the mirror itself.

Now mind you...not in one sitting...but over time.

Hmmm....I hadn't heard of people counting to 666 while looking in a mirror, though I suspect a big part of the mirror's popularity in spells and the like has to do with the fact that mirrors help people to see what they would otherwise be unable to see

To me, a mirror always seemed like a gateway to another world or time.
Like going forward or back in time kind of thing. Also, mirrors are so powerful, because they show you a reflection of your self on the outside, and people judge too soon by sight, so you can't believe what a mirror tells you all the time

Mirrors have been the focus of superstition since they were discovered. Not only did they reflect a persons image, but also caused fear. Imagine never seeing yourself, and then you have a mirror. The people in the olden days must have been really freaked out. When someone passes, the mirrors are covered. this is so the dead person doesn't get upset because they do not cast a reflection, and this is confusing. It makes it easier for them to go into the light. Mirrors will always be a daemon for those of us who dislike our reflection, a wonderful thing for the famous, and a superstitious article.

Depending on the belief, mirrors can be used to see into the soul.... Because like eyes, they can help you see into the soul. Mirrors in some religious beliefs are also seen as portals into other..... realms or worlds.
A matter of perception. It all depends on how you see things.

A mirror shows a person in true form. A mirror can not lie. If you look hard enough you can see your inner self in it. People have very many different beliefs about mirrors. Vampires however can not see their reflection because they are said to not have a soul. No soul, no reflection.

Tzaddi.. i loved what you had to say about it.. And it seems very plausible.

When i was nursing, a patient had passed away, we would open a window close in the room and cover any mirrors nearby.
I hadn't thought of it perhaps, confusing or frightening the spirit as it leaves the body.
