Do you believe Ouija boards actually can connect people to the spiritual realm?
If so, do you believe that certain people attract certain spirits?

Also, do you believe that if a person has a strong connection with a spirit that they can utilize the ouija board on their own?

And if one uses the board by themselves, do the results come at a slower pace?
I find when there are more people participating, the answers come more swiftly.

Parlor tricks have been tested time and again in the right hands a ouija board is a great ice breaker, they can even ease peoples grief of losing a loved one, simple by focusing in a lighter novelty setting, the principle of the board is suggestive.Aura photography showed spikes in the colors of the hands placed on the board.Showed static fields.A group of "self professed OB readers"upon being asked to do it blind folded canceled the show.If like poltergeist the energy of someone near the board spikes in anticapation then perhaps this energy could trigger a chain of Para behavior events.some say well so and so had this info but they fail to notice that so and so knows the host and had been to readings before so there are degrees of association to consider as well.

The Ouija board is a tool, just that. It is not evil or bad any more then a hammer or a saw is evil. You can do bad things with them like hit someone with a hammer but that does not make the hammer bad, only the intention behind the hammer.
Used in correct and safe manner the Ouija board can be a useful tool in contacting the other side.
When you do ritual do you put up a protective barrier between you and that which can harm you. Of course you do. The same is true for using the Ouija board. Put up a circle of protection and be specific who you wish to come through and who is not welcome. You are opening a gate way so there are times when not so nice things will try to come through. You would not let a jerk into your home and so it is the same with the Ouija board.
Use them with care and respect and that is what you will get in return.

But I heard only demons can come out of it. I thought it was used to connect with the devil or the great under spirit.
And one time my friend tried to throw his away he took it to the desert buried it & everything but it was back where he had it the next day.

i dont know if this is anything but me and a few friends were using one when we were young and one of the girls took her hand off before we were through and she went into seizures (she never had a history of seizures)

it would have been different it had been me becuase i have seizure but she had seizures and when she came out her throat was swallon and she couldnt breath

while her parent took her to the hospital i took the board and took the her bad work shop and painted it black then burned it and it was one that you would buy in Wal-Mart

I don't believe in the devil but I know some do. As I said it is a tool. If you give a party and just give out an open invitation you are bound to get some bad folks showing up at your house. You don't want that. Same is true for using a Ouija board. Be specific who you invite. Also when the party is over and the guests go home you close and lock your doors. Same true for the board. You do a ritual of protection before you use it, do a banishing ritual when you are done. Close and lock the door.

In order for an Ouija board to work you either have to have some kind of power whether you know it or not, or the board would've had to have been created by someone with power. A regular person can't contact the other side with a board made by some family game company.

As I said, it is only a tool. Cars kill everyday but folks don't stop driving them. However I also believe that if it is something that you are uncomfortable with then by all means you should not use it. Go with your guts.

Me and a bunch of people used one in a vacant house that was supposedly haunted. Not the smartest thing to do, but we were young and misheivous. We actually got the shit scarred out of us, the board actually talked to us through the Planchette. Told us to leave now, we are not welcomed. Then one of the people in our group was cut on the arm, like someone scratched her. After that we high tailed it out of there and never went back. True story and we weren't drunk or stoned. So I must say that yes I believe in them.

as a skeptic I would say that this method to contacting spirits is the only type that has come close to convincing me....
however, I could still dismiss it as negative energy and thought that controls the board.

Ouija boards are like giving a loaded gun to a child.
Ihe child is not particularly malicous or nor will it knock over a bank, the child does not comprehend the power in it's hands.
I think it is best not to mess with dangerous stuff like that.
I mean don't get me wrong I myself am an adrenaline junkie BUT anything I undertake, the risk's and the unseen element I always know and FULLY UNDERSTAND, Ouija boards have been around long before us and still not FULLY understood.
Best leaving it alone really.

My Ouija board was self-made, and each time I have used it no negative results occured.

I would never want to try it on my own, for if something should happen it would be hard for others to believe first of all, and I'm not sure I alone could ward off a powerful evil presence.

I have heard that the only way to dispose of the Ouija board and all spirits bound to it is to break or cut it into 7 pieces and bury it under the ground.

Burning does nothing, apparantly, if the spirit is strong enough.

I still can't help but wonder if a Ouija board can be used safely by one person... I mean, can one individual have the power to communicate with spirits alone?

I heard from a friend that when they tried it alone, nothing at all happened.

When I was growing up, my parents would not allow them in our house (my mom had a bad experience as a child - after she used it, she started having visions of bad things happening to her friends before they happened - premonitions. Not sure if it was due to the board, but it was enough to banish them from the house).

I tried it once and didn't have the best experience either. We don't keep them in our house.

Well said BD ... I still see Para Normal activity around OBs but more Para Behavioral activity(just as facinating to me as if it was ghost). If it is not as some believe spirits...something still creates movement and spells out underlying "secrets"of the users to each other. Some obvious some more subtle "secrets"this exposer by the OB portal and lingering suspicion can trigger Drama, and even Poltergeist Activity.

Ouija boards are only tools to contact spirits. Be sure to use sage etc when using one. I sure as hell remember to use protective herds and such when working with a Ouija board. When I was little my mother took me to a Indian Burial grounds. I still remember the way there so one Holloween at like 10 pm I said to my friends that we should go there and such. So we got some candles [white] and I grabbed the Ouija board.
When we got there and had set everything up three of us gathered around the board. We waited for about 5 min before anything happened. We didnt understand what the spirit said but when we didnt more and kept asking what was it saying one of my friend couldnt breathe and passed out.
Sooo remember to cast a protective circle before you do something like that.

Boards are just a tool, as a child uses a walker to walk at first, so must those who wish to contact spirits use a board. I think it bolsters our own confidence to use one. Then, after the "connection" has formed one can go on without the tool.

I just looked up the "Phillip Phenomenon".
It states a valid point, that you get what you expect out of these situations. It puzzles me, though, to ponder whether Phillip appeared because they wanted him to or if it was an actual entity who latched onto Phillip's story.

I think that you have to have like a special something in order for it to work. Like you have to be in tune with the spiritual world to have it actually work correctly.

Hi LadyPatricia

phillip phonomenon is just a name given to some thing one can make using focus and will power.
the ghost you got could be phillip not the same as the experiment.
basicaly the energy is from the collective in the room the way it goes is based on the influence of the group so a negative deamon fear becomes a reality and some poor bord gets torn into 7 bits.... lol

belive me getting a deamon through takes months of hard work and fasting... not for the faint hearted

I feel that a Ouija board is very capable of connecting us with people and spirit's of the past and can be very helpful in use if used to be so however they can also be a tool to set forth terrible thing's such as sprit's and spell's that can cause great harm.In closing I suggest not using a Ouija board unless you are fully aware of what your fooling with.

they can be used as a tool for spirits to communicate with the living...however they do not possess a great power that draws the spirits in...a spirit might just as easily use a bell or other objects...to get a point across.

Ouija Boards... they do work. I will say that. But, it's not the board, it's the ritual involved that creates the connection. I believe they are a form of communication, but one of the lowest and easiest to influence. For those trained in the works of divinity, empathy, and spiritual manifestations it can be a tool just as cards stones and scribe, but one trained in such ideals wouldn't be using a "board game". We know how to use it with out the fear of infestation. Using a board with someone who knows what they are doing could prove useful.
But even to the highly trained, these boards are easily influenced by both personal thought and outside input. While it's easy for us to push the Planchette around the letters of the answer we want to see, it's just as easy for any spirit, living or crossed, to push. I myself as well as my coven would never use it for these reasons. And, as easily as happy thoughts can push there way through, the fear and hesitation one might feel while touching the board can easily manifest. If you think that something is going to come through and terrorize you, you're probably right, because thats what you expect.
A few general rules that will ensure you happy times:
1) Only use when clear minded
2) Always open and close the board. One person must remain touching the Planchette at all times, so if you have to go to the bathroom, have someone stay, or close the board.
3)Take what is said with a grain of salt. Nothing is 100% face value.
4)Don't do it alone. Nothing's going to eat your face off, but let's be serious. It's like playing Tic Tac Toe by yourself, you will always win.
Follow these steps and you should be just peachy. But honestly, there are much more precise methods out there.

They work if you believe they work. Just like when you get your cards read. Often it is general information that could apply to your current situation, similar to the horoscopes in the daily paper.

As far as evil and using them alone I would love to see some info on the original of these myths.

Regardless of who actually invented the board, Charles Kennard and his Kennard Novelty Company are responsible for being the first to patent a new item that would soon be all the rage. He was awarded the patent on February 10, 1891. He called the new creation "Ouija" because he claims the board told him that Ouija was Egyptian for "Good Luck." ~

wiyh out putting my own personal experences in this i will give you this artical on ouija borads and its history there of ,of spirit possession of the board.

As an invention it is very old. It was in use in the days of Pythagoras, about 540 B.C. According to a French historical account of the philosopher's life, his sect held frequent séances or circles at which 'a mystic table, moving on wheels, moved towards signs, which the philosopher and his pupil, Philolaus, interpreted to the audience as being revelations supposedly from the unseen world.'

- Encyclopedia of Psychic Science

Writers of occult literature love to talk about the Ouija board's ancient roots. Ouija boards, they tell us, were in use in ancient Greece, Rome, China, or whatever other cultures the authors deem important. They steadfastly maintain that modern Ouija boards are the direct descendants of its more primitive ancestors. If the ancestor wasn't a Ouija board exactly, it was "Ouija-like." This can mean that almost any early divination device qualifies. Few question this and new writers repeat the words of the old without thinking very critically about it. Ancient Ouija boards: fact or fiction? Let's take a look.

The statement between the twin lamps at the top of this page comes from Nandor Fodor's, Encyclopedia of Psychic Science (1934). Fodor takes it word for word from Lewis Spence's earlier book, An Encyclopedia of Occultism (1920). This is the one recurring quote found in almost every academic article on the Ouija board. Spence claims that Ouija boards are ancient and, according to a French historian, a "mystic table on wheels" was in common use among the Pythagoreans. An interesting claim, but is it accurate? Apparently not. Of all the oracles and divination methods mentioned in the writings about Pythagoras and his followers, this "mystic table" isn't among them. Who was the French historian in Spence's account? Spence doesn't say. His description is the first and only one of this ancient Ouija board in any historic record. Spence is also the first to write: "In 1853, a well known French spiritualist, M. Planchette, invented the instrument to which he gave his name." Not only is there no record of a French Spiritualist, well known or otherwise, named M. Planchette, but the word "planchette" means, "little plank" in French. French Spiritist Allan Kardec explains in detail how the planchette evolves in his The Medium's Book (1861). Before it was the little plank (board) it was the little basket. Before that, it was the little table. Neither Kardec nor any other writer of the period credits the planchette to a person with the same name. Perhaps there is something intriguing about these two oft-repeated Ouija legends that keeps them alive. Or, it may be that writers repeat them simply because they believe them to be true. You may draw your own conclusions.

Edmond Gruss describes an ancient Roman Ouija-like board in his, The Ouija Board, A Doorway to the Occult (1994): "Fourth-century Byzantine historian Ammianus Marcellinus records one of the earliest forms of divination, which used a pendulum and a dish engraved with the alphabet." This is an interesting and creditable account from Ammianus Marcellinus' The Later Roman Empire (A.D. 354-378). In his narrative, two sorry individuals, Patricius and Hilarius, under arrest for creating an oracle to define who would succeed the emperor, plead before the court:

My lords, in an unlucky moment we put together out of laurel twigs in the shape of the Delphic tripod the hapless little table before you. We consecrated it with cryptic spells and a long series of magical rites, and at last made it work. The way in which it did so, when we wished to consult it about hidden matters, was this. It was placed in the middle of a room thoroughly fumigated with spices from Arabia, and was covered with a round dish made from the alloys of various metals. The outer rim of the dish was cunningly engraved with the twenty-four letters of the alphabet separated by accurate intervals. A man dressed in linen garments and wearing linen sandals, with a fillet around his head and green twigs from a lucky tree in his hand, officiated as priest. After uttering a set prayer to invoke the divine power which presides over prophecy, he took his place above the tripod as his knowledge of the proper ritual had taught him, and set swinging a ring suspended by a very fine cotton thread which had been consecrated by a mystic formula. The ring, moving in a series of jumps over the marked spaces, came to rest on particular letters, which made up hexameters appropriate to the questions put and in perfect scansion and rhythm, like the lines produced at Delphi or by the oracle of the Branchidae.
Unfortunately for Patricius and Hilarius, things did not go well after their inquisition: "both the accused were fearfully mangled by the torturers hooks and taken away unconscious."
We should mention, in case you didn't read it clearly, that the tripod in the story has everything to do with the Greek oracle at Delphi and nothing to do with the three-legged planchette, as modern writers sometimes mistakenly report. The oracle is clearly a pendulum dish and not a talking board, an important distinction, but why quibble? Could this be an early ancestor of the modern Ouija board? Historically, pendulum devices like this must have been rare since there is little record of common use from Roman times to the 1850's. If we are speaking of evolution, a process in which something passes by degree to a different or advanced state, it's hard to make the connection to modern day Ouija boards. 1500 years is a big leap, even for the spirits to make. It is an ancient alphabet oracle, but it is not a relative of the Ouija board.

Stoker Hunt in his, Ouija the Most Dangerous Game (1985), writes about Ouija boards in ancient China: "In China, centuries before the birth of Confucius (551?-479 B.C.), the use of Ouija-like instruments was commonplace, considered a nonthreatening way to communicate with the spirits of the dead." He is speaking of a well-known form of Chinese spirit writing (Fu Chi, Fuji, Fuluan, or Jiangbi). Some Chinese mystics believe that a divine spirit can take possession of a writing brush or a writing tool similar to the western planchette. Opinions vary among historians about the age of this practice, but it doesn't matter here. This "Ouija-like" instrument is a Ouija-like board without the board, letters, numbers, or sliding message indicator. In other words, it isn't a Ouija board at all.

Hunt goes on to say, "In thirteenth-century Tartary, the Mongols used Ouija-like instruments for purposes of divination and instruction." Although not referenced, this comes directly from Epes Sargent's book, Planchette; or The Despair of Science (1869): "According to Huc, the Catholic missionary, table-rapping and table-turning were in use in the thirteenth century among the Mongols, in the wilds of Tartary. The Chinese recognize spiritual intervention as a fact, and it is an element in their religious systems." It is fun to ponder where Huc the Catholic missionary got the information that table rapping and table-turning were in use in the thirteenth century among the Mongols. That paints quite a mental picture, but the message is clear: Huc is talking about table-turning. Almost all scholars agree that table turning originated in 19th century America. All scholars except for Huc the Catholic missionary, Stoker Hunt, and others who repeat such unsubstantiated ideas. And, need we say it? There is absolutely no historical evidence that American spiritualists were influenced by 13th century Mongols.

To be an ancestor of something, there must be some connection, some evolution, some influence. The instrument has to have been in wide enough use to connect to the popular imagination. As relationships go, the talking boards of today most likely grew out the use of the alphabet and alphabetic pasteboards during 19th century spiritualistic séances and not from pendulum oracles or other devices used many centuries earlier.

In 1848, the Fox sisters realized immediately that calling out the individual letters of the alphabet, and having the spirits knock accordingly, was easier than asking lengthy "yes/no" questions. The use of alphabet pasteboards became common among table-tippers who came to the same conclusion. And there were mediums who didn't wait for the spirits to knock but instead relied on a kind of divine intuition: "During a communication between the medium and the supposed spirit, the former passed his hand over the alphabet, until he found his finger sensibly and irresistibly arrested at a certain letter, and so on, until the word, the sentence, was completed." -The Rappers (1854).

Starting in the 1850's, alphabet boards made the transition to the dial-plate instruments, also known as psychographs, first in the United States and then in Europe. The first talking board with a detachable sliding message indicator appeared around 1886. That's a short thirty-eight year time frame. If the Ouija board has relatives they are the devices of this period: the talking tables, the alphabet pasteboards, and the early dial-plate instruments.

I LOVE Ouji boards, but i get a lot of static from my friends and family because they think if I go and giet one that I am going to call upon a spirit of a most horrible array. I believe that if you have good intentions, you will be able to talk to a spirit without calling on an evil one. Also, I do feel that if more people are involved you will be able to talk to the spirit more easily, seeing as there is more energy floating around for it to cling to to elp it use the pointer. I f you are smart and know what you are doing I don't see any problems with using an OUji board:)

In Victorean times before the toy company started maufacturing OB they were a common thing at Parlor
meetings (back before TV)to break ice and open up people for phyco analisis(also popular at the time)
Some feel more comfortable speaking about things they consider secret through a third party some forms of hypnosis work on this same principle.Having a common host who has brief knowledge of a guest (maybe even an invited friend as well can enhance the OB experience.
I can agree there may be others as stated here who have had wild experiences (or heard of a friends friend who did.The history of OB as Oracles

Rereading the question I think that contacting the dead if not possible then the possibility that through the aiding questions of others at the board and with subconcious residue from conversations and reviewing effects of the deceased one has the answers to the questions they ask but cannot access them directly so the board serves a purpose a person that is alone may hit regret or dwell on negative grief
that can cause hystaria anxiety and manafest other dangerous personality complications.

If you don't understand it, leave it alone. Many things have power because we give it to them. If you believe in a board, then it will have power over you. Is it real supernatural power? Does it matter, you have given yourself to it already. All I can say is, be careful to watch what you put your faith into.

To be honest with you all, I read the title and it "makes me weak."

I as a child played with the Ouija Board with friends and cousins what have you, and there was a 'freaky' thing happen every single time.

I know that it had said that something bad was going to happen in the next night, and it was correct.

I mean IDK but it made me a believer...and I have never touched one since youth.
