I've often heard that vampires, are much stronger than humans. I was wondering why that is, and is it true of all vampires to have such abilities?
I was also wondering if it's possible for a vampire to it's strength, and still remain a vampire?
Also, do vampires work out?

I would think their strength would come from the excess blood in their body. More blood = more oxygen and nutrients brought to the muscle and therefore more strength.

It could also be that they feel pain less or differently so they could ignore muscle aches from over-exertion. Same reason zombies are supposedly stronger.

Haha! Yes, vamps can work out, just as any other creature out there. Strength increase can be looked at as one of the dark gifts a vamp inherits. Not all vamps get increased strength (they may get something entirely different, such as increased psychic abilities, sight, hearing...[and some may get everything. I just depends on what cards you're delt.]), but on a whole, increased strength seems to be the norm in some way, shape, or form.

Some do, but those who do, don't do it to gain strength, they do it to stay in shape, and to keep their reflexes sharp (or, at least, if they're practicing martial arts).

Yes... But they already have strength. More strength than most. Though, yes, working out would be a good way to increase felxability. But not all vamps get into fights like that.

Yes, but lets say that two vampires have a fight over something, which do you think would win, the one is stronger, or the one who is weaker? Let's just pretend they have same knowledge for martial arts.

TheVenus if they both had the same amt. of knowledge would that not mean they practice the same amt.

I say this cause they would have had to do it in order to get the same amt. of knowledge.

You're missing the point I'm trying to make. Vamps don't NEED to work out to BECOME stronger... They naturally are. Sure, if two vamps fight, the stronger one will probably win. I didn't say they were equally strong, I said they're naturally stronger on their own.

Okay, one of your questions didn't make sense. It seems that you were missing a word? - "I was also wondering if it's possible for a vampire to it's strength, and still remain a vampire?"

In reference to your questions, it depends on what type of vampire you're talking about. Are you referring to the vampires of ancient folklores and mythologies? Or do you mean to discuss the "modern day" vampire, in reference to the sanguinarians and psychic vamps? In the cases of the latter, well sure, why not work out? The modern day vampire is an everyday human that simply lives the vampire lifestyle and possesses characteriestics that your average human doesn't have. So he/she can go about and do whatever they please. :)

I'd believe so. I myself have a very high pain tolerence... ok I enjoy it. That's part of the reason why I get tatoos and piercings, I love the pain. I have stronger legs than pretty much anyone that I know. I can go from laying on the ground to standing with 4 friends piled on me because of how strong my legs are. and they average about 170 lbs. each.

I am going to agree with Venus. She has the knowledge not to be re-iterated.

Even though vamps are stronger then the average individual, does not mean they practice strength training. Two vamps are not alike when it comes to strength training...Not that they need it mind you, but if vamp 1 practices the martial arts the same as vamp 2 does, vamp 1 not nessessarily has the same attributes as vamp 2. This being said, vamp 2 may end up being a black belt way before vamp 1. Such is the case, since vamp 1 even though he/she practices regularly, does not mean they have the knowledge based on belt class. They could just be practicing kata.

I believe this is the point Venus is trying to make.

I believe that vamps in a 'subculture' 'sanguine' way opposed to the mythological form have the same strength and abilities as every other human. I don't believe that in jesting anothers' life forces IE. (blood, energy) would have any affect on their physical prowess. In my experience these 'life forces' help a person to even out their chi and to fulfill cravens.

On a mytholigical viewpoint, the old vampire having strength bit could have come straight out of Vlad's storyline, metaphorically gaining his enemies strength as he drank their blood whilst dining beside their carcass's on poles.

I would answer with the simple fact that ones ideals formed throughout their lives co-exist with influence of their daily lives.

Fiction to one individual would be a lifestyle to the next, such is the way of things.

And why are we still considering Vlad Tepes to have been a vampire when he most certainly was not?

Bram Stoker liked Vlad's nickname and changed the name of his title character from "Count Vampyre" to "Dracula." Thus, even the name "Dracula" was a name change added rather late in the writing of his novel. In fact, up to only a few weeks before actual publication, Stoker's title for the book was to have been "The Un-Dead." And the actual inspiration for the "Dracula" character came not at all from Vlad Tepes, the sadistic 15th Century dictator, but instead from the very English actor, Sir Henry Irving, Stoker's then-employer!

I still await the day when those claiming most to adorate and emulate the vampire take the time to actual research the vampire.

I understand that for many, fiction can be foundational for some escapist fun and perhaps even a bit of lifestyle living, just as "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" fans love to wear costumes of their own favorite characters and pretend to be them. Of course, those characters are truly 100% fiction and even their most ardent fans also realize that fact. However, with "vampire" fans, this is not so.

With "vampires," there is an historical component that can easily muddy the waters of what is potentially true and what is complete fiction, that greys the line between reality and fantasy. So when a question about vampires and their ascribed traits come up, such as this one re: vampire strength, and is treated as though it were a true vampiric trait, I feel it is important to assist in helping to clearly delineate historical fact from complete fiction.

He, he, he...well in my opinion vampyres are like anyone else as far as physical strength. Since vampyres live in normal society and are human, yes they work out if that is their choice.

Now mental strength may be a different story. Most have heightened senses and many are psychic but let me tell you not all because we are not cloned nor are we cookie cutter manufactured. Its just an over-all tendency.

All the rest is book stuff and things made up in movies and rpg.

Well Hollywood and other stories may add a lot glamor, but where did the stories come from, there must have been at least one strong vampire.
Also, the thing about the mind being stronger, I don't think that any minds more stronger than the next. I think some individuals might exercise (same with weights) it more. Therefore, gaining more analytical and mental skills.
Anyways, enough with the minds, lets revert back to the topic of inhumanly strength.

Perhaps because the authors of the books and screenwriters made them so?

Most fiction has vampires with incredible strength and agility and even some have them with the ability to fly.

Being undead, I cannot see how working out in a gym would be of any benefit to them.

This thread is classic vr.

Rosho: two vampires meet in a dark alley each ready to feast on a buxom brunette who has taken a wrong turn. They are similar in stature and weight and both were taken in their mid-twenties. One has studied martial arts and twirls 100 lb. barbells like batons. The other sits on his ass in front of the computer investing in the stock market and reading literary fiction.

Who would win?

The bookworm. Why? Because he has the money to hire body guards who beat the shit out of barbell guy, while he makes off with the brunette.

I guess it all depends on what movie your watching. They vary. For example, in the Blade movies they certainly were stronger and quicker than humans, in John Carpenters Vampires, the seem to be the same as humans.

As far as people that live the vampire life style, I don't believe they are any different than other humans

Like all have said vampires are stronger in mental capacities, but that might be why there strength in the physical is stronger as well, because they can control their bodies better that they can use their adrenal glands easier than most and that would cause them to be stronger and faster than most ppl.

rosho,

Taking a lead from cerebralassassin69, as well as the earlier mention of martial arts, it may be worth looking into how the individual uses the ki energy, in terms of focusing the flow and understanding the connections between position, breathing and motion.

There is a consideration that if a modern living vampire is innately capable of manipulating the fundamental energies of the body, then it would seem logical to extend that assumption to include an ability to direct the ki into the area required for a feat of strength, perhaps it may even be hormonal, or a combination of several factors, including training and experience, mindset and sheer force of will.

UpirLikhyj,

I would remind you that this forum is open for fictional discussion, as much as your interpretation of what truly defines a 'vampire', although this thread does appear to aim towards the theoretically 'real' aspects.

Since blood contains Iron and nutrients that the body needs to build muscle, the intake of blood would make a person stronger. Though, I don't think you can really become exceedingly strong without working your muscles and burning the lactic acids (what makes you sore after a long work out) in order to make you stronger than someone who sits in front of their computer all day and does nothing.

Dealing with a "predator" type of mentality... upon stalking of prey, and finally coming in for the kill, the strength needed would be just enough to subdue the prey. Aswith a cougar does not attack the elephant, it picks its fights that it has a possiblity to win... But if it is as two Vamps meeting in an alley, and having a disputed "feeding ground" Such as two "Alpha" Lions, one would always have more experence or technics to best its previous foes. But may not be the stronger of the two.

Gain as much knowledge as you can, to be as powerful as you can be.

If a fictional vampire was drained to point of death and then given his or hers sire's blood, the undead would not have any need to exercise. Most fictional vampires' hearts do not beat nor their lungs work....strength is what the maker of that vampire world on paper decides it to be.

I think it is just a gift bestowed upon them once turning...but then again this all make believe isnt it? All information on this will be based on movies and stories made up by people. Naturally after living for so long I am sure you bound to become stronger and faster and be better apt to test the limits of the body.

I believe it has much to do with the construction of the very muscle fibers themselves. Anyone with even a limited knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and genetics, would have to admit that each ethnic or genetic phenotype has different muscle structures. Some stronger, some weaker. Also that some can be altered (thickened, thinned, etc)from treatment by one agent or another...

In fiction, vamps are physically frozen in time. the only changes are when they magically heal themselves or when their skin is flushed pink after feeding. Presumably, they also get erections. Imagining a workout and strength building is taking the fictional vamp to a whole new level of molecular responsiveness: breathing, heart beating, sweating. This calls for a new definition of undead.

Well there would have to be a study done to see if most or if not all vampires have a great strength for people their size and build. Now as for all the supernatural crud that has been spewed here a lot of it is false. Vampires would have gifts that others don’t because like a person that is blind their body compensates for its lack of energy by amping up those traits that would best help them get what they need. If any more is to be learned a detailed study over time would have to be done. Given the lack of reliable sources on this subject that is not likely to come any time soon.

From a purely contemporary mythological point of view:

Vampires are possessed of abnormal strength and abilities. It is this way just to show a more drastic contrast between the likes of any vampire and the likes of any human.

With that, I dare say they needn't work out. Cute idea though :)

Increasing strength by lifting weights may not apply for a vamp. Hard exercise, such as lifting weights, creates more muscle strength by damaging muscle tissue and then having the body fortify the muscles with more cells, which eventually equals more strength.

With the classic vamp, their bodies repair damage and attempt to place the body into the same configuration in which it became when turned.

So a vamp bench presses 20 reps of 1000 pounds over the course of a month. The result of this exercise...no additional strength through the build up of muscles.

I like the take in STAB's post that the best and most likely way to increase the "strength" of the vamp is through knowledge, wisdom, and learning to control and channel energy.

Are you talking real vampires here? If so you have been misinformed. Vampires feel better when they feed and it allows them to stay healthy so that they can learn to focus on their natural talents but it does NOT make them any stronger. In fact feeding to much can make you ill just like with normal food. Too much blood will make you vomit and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. As for too much prana well that will lead to energy burn which is damage to the natural energetic pathways in your body.

When your body is deprived of certain things, other senses/strengths are gained. Example: A blind man cannot see, but has increased use in his touch, hearing, smell ect.

Vampires are deprived of sunlight possibly giving them different strengths and senses. If I didn't have to work/have a social life, I would consider avoiding the sun for months. I know I would need to take extra vitamins to make up for it. But I think it would be worth trying.

And yes, I believe that Vampires can work out to possibly increase strength. Senses may be there forever once gained though.

I dont believe personally that Vampires have super human strength but if they did, then what would the point be to work out? Even if it is to gain strength, the way i have heard them having it then is through the blood excess. therefor it is not really in the muscles. Building them up...I dont know if vampires even can. depending on the fictional story you use.

Vampires probably don't work out in gyms though, they didn't have any a thousand years ago. They probably did what we now call functional strength training. More like the strong man compititions. Lifting large blocks of stone, etc...

I don't believe that any one out there who claims to be a vampire has super human strenght, but if you were talking about myths and legends or things from movies or books then I would have to agree with boneyardvixen who said that their strenght has something to do with the excess blood in the vampire's body.

Well the idea of all the abilities that vampyres have originated from the myths of many cultures. They feared vampyres and apparently ended up with a list of nonhuman characteristics that they possessed. In the present day this thought has only been helped along a lot by hollywood. I doubt that the mythical version of a vampyre would work out because if they are already strong then what is the point?

From what i have learned about vamps is their strength is the same as it was before they were turned. now if two vamps were to fight it wouldnt matter who was stronger it would matter who was smarter and new tricks and style. you could be the weaker of the two but still kill the other by haveing more knowledge of fighting.

If you are talking about fictional vampires, they are paranormal being, supernatural. Any strength, speed, agility they have comes from supernatural forces. Some fiction even leads us to believe that vampires grow stronger as they get older.

Some story lines lead us to believe that their various levels of strength are inherent in them, such as intelligence may vary in humans.

Doru has a good point in that for humans that follow the vampire lifestyle, mental training as well as physical training could make one become stronger.

There are many ways of developing mental and physical abilities.

If one competes at any endeavor at a high level, one must train mentally and physically. Playing football in high school or higher, running marathons, martial arts, wrestling, boxing, debate, international chess competition.

All these require sound diet, mental training and physical training. The diet for many athletes is geared toward their events, high protein, possibly high carbs, vitamins etc... The mental training is for discipline, technique, mental toughness under stress. Depending on the activity the physical training will include strength, agility, flexibility, explosiveness and endurance.

In the end, if the human vampires as we know them have above normal strength and speed due to mental and physical training, they would be like other athletes such as professional boxers, or olympic decathon competitors. At the highest levels, these people have more strength, and agility then normal people.

Sure, vampires can work out. I do more now than I used to. I don't believe real vampires have super human strength, but may posess more strength than others around them to some degree.

Ex: I've been told many, many times, "You're strong, for a woman."

I can hold my own.

In reality, anyone eating right, vitamins, working out will gain strength and endurance.

For the fictional vampire, they are incredibly strong, fly, stick to walls/ceilings, regenerate depending on who wrote the story.

I think we are in agreement Lumiya, fictional/mythical vampires are supernatural in nature and hence have supernatural powers. Humans with the right training, diet and disiplince gain advantages.

Doru states that he feels that his mental training as part of being a vampire makes him stronger. I can believe that based on what I have heard from the people that lead a vampire lifestyle.

Question is: is it from drinking blood, or the mental discipline and training.
