this is something that i wrote as a members article i hope that it is accepted and i hope that you all take your time to read it and let me know what you think.

Thought time there has been thousands of reports of vampirism. Can every one of those people really have suffered from a mental disorder?
Scientifically vampirism is described as a mental disorder. Which details the delusions where the person suffering this infliction believes that they have turned into a creature of the night. I personally find this hard to believe. My reasons being that there are people in this world that need blood to survive, that the sun can actually hurt them, the list goes on. Now I can understand that some of those people may have misconstrued these symptoms as vampirism. But thousands? How can this be?
I personally know people that are vampires. Many here on vr and some in the city I live in. it is very hard to believe that what they suffer from is merely a mental disorder when they are going through massive pain when they haven’t feed.

I suppose that the medical explanation for vampirism is connected to the discrediting of vampirism in whole. But to me that’s all it is a feeble attempt to rally people against another group of people.

I leave this information at your feet. And leave you asking this one question. Is vampirism the dark gift or merely a medical disorder?

i realy hope i translated all that right.

you're asking if it is dark gift? i personaly think it is not realy a gift if some of those people sufer from pain if they don't feed. and if they can't be on the sun light it is not the advantage also...

I truly do not believe it is a gift as said also. some would call it a curse. the gift of what hollywoods version of staying young and feeding off others and what happens if you where somewhere where there is no food or shelter, suns coming up . a gift

i believe its neither a gift of a curse...

i dont think its related to mental illness either, though there is some instances of psychotic ppl latching on the vampire image as their delusion..its not really all that common.

I believe it would be a gift. Sure there's disadvantages, but theres also the chance to live forever... and your family could too. There's homeschooling and stuff and Walmarts are open 24/7, so there's always ways around the disadvantages.

I don't think it's a question of the medical profession setting out to debunk vampirism.

There is simply no medical evidence whatsoever that people need to take blood to survive.

There are numerous medical reasons why people cannot stay in the sunshine....my own brother is pale and his skin blisters....I get prickly heat....this does not make us vampires.

Last time I looked, a recent poll here at VR showed that a high precentage of members ( over half ) have had mental health issues.

I notice nobody here believes themselves to be a vampire of the original kind.....only the more mysterious/modern/romantic kind.

If a person chooses to imbibe blood because they enjoy the taste/sexual liasons etc that's fine by me, each to their own.

Just don't tell me your a vampire belonging to house such and such and hint at secrets which can prove you are what you say you are etc.

Can we suggest that it is a medical disorder that incorporates a high sensitivity to light and a craving for blood? What thresholds can we put in place that would adequately include all of the self proclaimed vampires- the sexual, psy, sang, elemental etc. The various denominations of vampires almost seems like a religion where some proclaim that their is an innate need from birth and others only show signs of "infection" when they hit the age where they spend hours online, watching horror films, and reading a romanticized version of mythological entities turned into a fascinating pop culture identity.

Is it a medical condition, I highly doubt it.

A gift? Depends on one's perspective- the gift of immortality seems like wishful thinking or an eternity to loathe in one's emo tendencies. What other dark gifts does being a vampire give you? Quick healing? Flying? Sex appeal? Animal transformation? The only one I can actually see as a gift is sex appeal, but only to the demographic that views the dark and mysterious as alluring and can overlook the numbers of diseases carried by blood sucking creatures.

People believe in vampires, well, everyone has their own beliefs. If one believes in something SO much, they're going to believe it as well.

I can't think of the name but there has been documented cases of women who either want to get pregnant SO bad, and the exact opposite they DON'T want children ever, that their body creates a false pregnancy. They will have all signs and symptoms of pregnancy, including their uterus growing, and pregnancy tests will test positive. However, ultrasounds prove there is no fetus in the womb.

The same could be said for someone who believes SO MUCH that they're a vampire. Their skin will burn quickly and become painful when in sunlight, they'll crave blood, etc.

Does this mean they are truely vampires? Maybe, maybe not.... You are the only one who can say who and what you are. The symptoms are all psychosomatic.

I certainly wouldn't call craving blood to the point of feeling extreme pain a gift of any kind.

I believe the dx of certain people as having a mental illness is very true these seems to fall mostly under a delusional belief they are like Dracula and have amazing powers over others. I know a few people that call themselves vampires myself included. I do not however believe I am an immortal being nor would I want to be one.

Everything that a person eats or drinks or is infected with, affects the persons genes. If this person has children then some of that altered genetic dna may be expressed physically through symtoms of the disease even though they themselves may never have been infected with it. It has a name something like hemophagia irregularis or something like that and it makes it increasingly difficult over time for a person to produce red blood cells properly. Hence, they feed on the red blood cells of others or at least crave it. Low and behold this condition may be expressed through those individuals offspring and therefore in a few decades or centuries, several thousand may be found.

i personally think it it both a gift and curse. There are both advantages and disadvantages to it. Scientifically it could be seen as a medical disorder as well. there are those allergic to sunlight and many other things that vampires cant tolerate. So I guess easily put I can see it both ways.

Well in complete honesty, I cannot see this as a gift in any form. It causes great pain to others and isolation to the person afflicted with vampirism. A medical disorder well it has been documented as being one over the past few years as psychology opens its mind and doors to other possibilities.

But a gift.. no.

I agree with so many of you. It's a pretty crappy gift. I'd call it a curse. I personally think the disadvantages far out weigh any advantages you might think there are. Personally I'd pass on being a Vampire. Even with all the romance of Hollywood, it seems like an unpleasant way to spend eternity.

well i have to agree with those above me..it is not a gift at all.
the pain and frail skin is deffinetly not the advantage iin any form.

but if we look from the hollywood side it sure is in some people's taste to live forever and stay young, being more powerful than anyone else...

it depends of the character..

The fictional vampires at least got to live forever and never age. That part could be considered a gift, but at quite a cost. The cost was certainly a curse.

I myself do not believe in the hollywood version of vapirism....I will not even begin on how stereotypical that is.As for thinking it a curse or just a mental illness, one must first look at the person in question and make that choice for themselves.I do not claim to be a vapire nor am i going to say I am not.....but I will say I do not crave blood ,tho I do not like the sun for my own personal reasons. And my skin is very pale. Can i say there is actually a vampire...yes...if we look at it in a certain perspective are ticks and other such insects and even a specific mammal not vampires.....they feed solely off the life giving blood of ppl and animals....do they live forever...no...no body truly lives forever ....

obviously there are medical disorders that are blood related however the medical profession will not use a term vampirism if the person is wanting to be diagnosed with vampirism than they have a mental disorder too. I agree with boneyard that one can really create ones symptoms depending on the strength of that want.

If a person is in real pain and wants to be helped than they will seek the answers from a professional and leave the fiction.

For mythological vamps there is no explanation

For subculture vamps, it is just a choice to how one wants to live their life.

There are medical diseases such as the sunlight is harmful to you that can be considered Vampiric.

However, in all fictional novels it's portrayed as being dark. And to some in the novels its considered a gift. Not to all, though.

Vampirism - I don't think it's neither a dark gift OR a medical disorder.

It's clearly a choice by individuals, a lot of which I think have a mental disorder.

But that's my opinion of course.

Don't know how relevant this is but i was watching CSI just as i read the forum title and one of the characters meantioned this.

King George the III presided over an important time in British history -- 1760 to 1820. He kept the UK secure during the Napoleonic Wars. He lost the American colonies. And, on five occasions throughout his reign, he lost his mind.

Scholars have attributed the madness of King George to a hereditary disorder of heme synthesis, called porphyria. Heme is the important iron-carrying component of the hemoglobin protein, and its oxygenation gives blood its red color.

In fact, the complicated heme synthetic pathway can go wrong at a number of steps, and thus, there are at least seven kinds of porphyria. Each is a little different, but some of George's family seems to be afflicted with variegate porphyria, due to a faulty protoporphyrin oxidase gene. During intermittent attacks, symptoms often included extreme skin sensitivity to sunlight, excessive hair growth, GI symptoms, seizures, and hallucinations.

(About twenty years ago, a fantastic notion was advanced: what if the vampires of European lore were porphyria victims? In addition to the sunlight-sensitivity thing, they had paleness, and a thirst for blood. This was taught to some of us in biochemistry class, but we weren't given the straight dope.)

No one's saying that George was a vampire (though the Colonials did ascribe to him some monstrous tendencies in the Declaration of Independence). But the severity and duration of his attacks seems excessive for porphyria.

heme.gifRecently, researchers writing in the Lancet offered an explanation:

We report the analysis of hair obtained from George III. Although no genomic DNA could be obtained, metal analysis revealed high concentrations of arsenic. Since arsenic interferes with haem metabolism, it might have contributed to the King's unusually severe and prolonged bouts of illness. We have identified sources of arsenic in the context of the medication George III received from physicians.

The sources of arsenic were described in the paper, and in the news:

...there is little information available to account for the unusual persistence, severity, and late onset of attacks. One possible explanation is exposure to heavy metals, including lead and mercury.

Martin Warren (University of Kent, UK) and colleagues ... found that the principal compound administered to the King during his illness was emetic tartar. Emetic tartar contains a substance called antimony, which can be contaminated with arsenic.

The authors believe that the King's medication was the source of the arsenic found in the hair sample.

Professor Warren states: "The presence of arsenic in a sample of the King's hair provides a plausible explanation for the length and severity of his attacks of illness; and contamination of his antimonial medications is the probable source of the arsenic. We propose that exposure to arsenic would exacerbate attacks of porphyria in a genetically predisposed individual."

Okay, I doubt that medical professors are trying to "discredit" or "discriminate" against a group of people.

Although I can't disprove vamps--and would find it interesting if they are real--many of the vampire traits can be scientifically explained.

Sensitivity to light: disorders such as leakoderma, in the form of albinism, can cause the person to be extremely fragile when confronted by large amounts of light.

Blood drinking: Not only could it have been a mental disorder, such things as rabies--or a similar disease--could have been affecting the person's behavior. Also, consumption of certain plants can cause strange lucid behavior as well--kind of how the Berserkers got their psycho-urges on.

I've always been a bit skeptical on the "need" for blood. Although some species of bats, fleas, mites, and even a butterfly feast on it regularly, it has no nutritional value for humans. It is mostly a bunch of water and iron-filled tissue, over half of it being a useless amount of plasma. Unless someone has some seriously low iron levels, I doubt they "require" blood as you say.

This is actuly a very wise question. If you want my opinion it goes both ways. Some people in this world can actully be real vampyres but it was also proven centuries ago that it is also a disease. A real disease. But to answer your question No i do not believe that Vampyrism is a medical disorder for every-person. I believe that is just "society" trying to get rid of superstition.

I don't think it's either, actually.
I don't believe it's a condition, inherited or a gift or any such.

Because someone enjoys the taste of blood or is curious of the taste, does that make them a vampire? Or simply a blood fetishist?

And also, the proper term for those that actually take in blood would be Sanguinarians, and they don't get their blood by biting usually...They have a Donor...So, there is one minsconception of vampires.

What about pranic or psi vampires? Are you a vampire because you sense energy more then others or because you crave it?

Before you attempt to figure out whether vampirism is a blessing or a curse, or a condition, you need to first figure out if you are truly a vampire.

Realizing if you are or not is deeply personal and different for every individual.

Also, saying that being a vampire is a gift because of immortality is silly.

No one lives forever.

Vampires do infact love, bleed, cry, laugh, and eventually die.

The idea of immortality is the Hollywood version of vampires and is the most prominent in culture and media today.

People too often also fixate on the idea of vampires drinking blood and tend to forget or not even realize that their is another type.

And that both types actually practice...

Well it depends on the individual. Fors ome they choose to live the lifestyle. While others suffer from other illnesses that would have you believe they would be a vampire.

If people consider it to be an illness...
Then maybe it's the illness they consider to be dark... or unearthly.

Just something to ponder...

It connot possibly be a gift in my view. It offers immortality of the soul, sure, but wouldnt everlasting life get boring after a while? especially when you are forced to live in the dark and always betiptoeing around people?

I don't see it as a medical issue, but it can be either a gift or a curse depending on the person. In my life it has been both at different times.

To be a Vampire, is not to be crazy or demented. We exist and we will be around for many years to come. The "urge" for blood, is just to survive. There is not "sexy" occasion while you are drinking blood, Only hollywood can create the the unreal about vampirism.

I think it is a curse. The reasoning is because I assume know one of us would want to watch our family die. So living on with it would be bad.

If the recipient wanted it than it’d be a gift. If they did not want it than it’d be a curse.

Here is what I know, that I can tell you.

It is not a medical condition that is just a excuse for anyone that needs a reason for that type of stuff.

Any vampire, werewolf, demon, or the many types of hybreds all know that there are very strict rules for anything they do.

Demon Hybreds use to be the slaves of the werewolves, vampires, demons, and hybreds. Hybreds are the guards of vampires, werewolves, and demon for right now. Demons are the assassins for all of the immortals. The vampires, and werewolves both fight for single rulership. Both are the rulers right now.

That is what I know, that I am able to tell. If anyone reading this has any questions. Please ask and I will answer or get the answer.

Mental disorder exists where a being behaves contrary to its nature... vampires being true to their nature cannot be regarded as afflicted or aberrative...

I certainly don't see it as a disorder.
Though wither it might be a dark gift, or a dark curse is entirely upon the veiws of the one who has it.

Although, it may hold true in some cases, I don't believe that ll are mentally disturbed. To be tormented when you can't get the things you need, such as the darkness or blood, that is not mental, that is fact. And from my understand, if it is fact then it can't be mental.

Some of the medical symptoms desribed here would explain porphyria, which is indeed a curse.

Finally someone said it lol. Porphyria. It is one of the medical disorders that they call a vampire disease. It causes a lot of symptoms that may seem like vampirism. Now, I'm not saying everyone who says they are a vampire has this, but there are people who have it and present a lot of vampire-like symptoms. Perhaps for some it is this, for others it may be something else. I'm not saying this explains it all. It doesn't.

As for being a gift or a curse, it all depends on your outlook I suppose. I myself have a chronic illness and the hollywood vampire always appealed to me because they could not get disease and die. For me I would see immortality as a gift. Like I said though, it depends one one's outlook on things.

Well sense no known vampires have come forward to prove they exist they only seem to exist in fiction. In a fictional sense I’d say that vampire were mostly a dark gift/curse and not a medical condition.
