I have heard and read from different places, that walk-ins exist. What I have heard is that souls that are wanting to come back or come back for half the time trade places with a soul that is ready to leave early due to being emotionally weary, etc.. This switch happens, when there is an accident or maybe an overdose/attempted suicide, or near death experience. While out of it, the souls "communicate" and make the switch.

When the person wakes up, they have a different sort of personality.

Have you ever experienced this in someone you know? Do you believe this could happen?

I have no personal experience with this but it is an intriguing possibility. If possession is possible so I don't see why something like this couldn't happen as long as the person being switched with wasn't really dead but in an astral state due to the near death situation. This could explain why the aura of somebody at the church I used to attend changed so much after an attempted suicide.

multiple personalities do not exist/have not been proven. they even changed the name to dissociative personality disorder. i would think if two souls traded places it would be rather permanent and only one personality would appear.

I haven't heard of this, but I must say, it doesn't seem that hard a thing to imagine happening. It would explain why some people are totally and completely changed after near-death situations....more so than any person would be changed, I mean. But I wonder....how would the souls get switched back?

This from www.crystalinks.com/walk_ins.html

Walk-in is an ancient concept first described in Hinduism whose modern name originated in the Spiritualist faith and was popularised by the related, but not identical New Age movements and beliefs. A walk-in is thought to be a person whose original soul has departed his or her body and been replaced with a new soul.

Walk-ins first appear in Hindu sacred literature. In Hindu belief, each person is comprised of several bodies, including the physical, astral, mental, refined, and so on. The only essence that is not a body, and therefore not tranferrable, is the Atman. So according to this belief system, a walk-in, as described in the book Merging with Siva by Sivaya Subramuniyaswami, can take one or many of these bodies.

The most famous Hindu story of a walk-in is that of the missionary Saint Tirumular. Legend has it that he voluntarily left his body in order to reanimate a young cowherd who had just died. His own body was subsequently taken up to heaven by the god Siva, leaving him to spend the remainder of his life on earth in the body of the cowherd. He was able to access the dead man's knowledge, including his ability to speak Tamil.

In modern times, "true" or sincere walk-ins might be a rare but possibly real medical or mental health phenomenon. A typical walk-in report involves an individual (frequently, but not always, female) who is badly injured, falls ill or is in some way incapacitated, or seems to "die" on the operating table during surgery, perhaps later reporting a near-death experience. Others claim that deep emotional trauma and suicidal desires alone may set the stage for a walk-in experience.

After resuscitation, the person may behave in a manner completely at odds with earlier, established behaviour patterns. She or he may speak in an unknown language and identify by a different name, and may be very frightened and confused, or supernally calm. While the experience cannot be determined to have any objective reality, subjectively it is deeply and importantly real for the affected individual.

Almost invariably, a walk-in will state they either do not know where the original inhabitant of the body has got to, or that the original soul has left it and gone on to heaven, or reincarnated, etc., leaving them in charge. The new individual may claim he or she is an angel; a "new" version of the former self; an older, more experienced soul; less often, a brand new one who has never incarnated before; or any manner of other origins.

Many walk-ins claim heightened psychic sensitivity and may take up work as New Age healers or ministers. Others claim inability to accomplish basic tasks of daily living. Clearly, at least for some, claiming a walk-in experience may have a number of secondary gains.

While the New Age belief system about walk-ins claims that these transitions can't occur involuntarily and that no soul walks into another's body without reason, the behaviour of some "new" people indicates that it may not always be so.

In classical cases, the change is immediately apparent. However, in cases where the "new soul" has enough information to take up the life of the "previous occupant" seamlessly, it may take weeks or months before a walk-in notices, or comes to believe, that a transition has indeed occurred. Occasionally, the "old self" returns after a period of months or years, and either the "new self" departs, or they coexist and may try to integrate into a single being, or work out a means of cooperation and live as two persons in one body.

This kind of walk-in is very similar to old-time, pre-Sybil cases of multiple personalities such as Mary Reynolds. A period of unconsciousness is followed by the manifestation of a new self. William James studied Reynolds and Ansel Bourne, and thought of multiple personality as something natural but not yet understood, rather than a mental disease.

Boris Sidis in his 1903 book Multiple Personalities recorded similar cases, involving both men and women.

In 1979, Spiritualist author Ruth Montgomery published Strangers Among Us, a collection of accounts of walk-ins. She included her own New Age theories and some improbable historical research, naming some renowned figures such as Thomas Jefferson as walk-ins. This and her follow-up book Threshold to Tomorrow brought the concept of walk-ins to the general public.

A belief system grew up around the walk-in experience, complete with all the usual New Age attributes such as "ascending into higher frequencies of evolution", predictions regarding Earth Changes, and the concept that the new person may possess a variety of psi powers unknown to ordinary human beings whose "vibrational levels" remain unraised.

The New Age walk-in belief system now includes a number of variant experiences such as channeling, telepathy contact with extraterrestrial intelligences, or soul merging, where the original soul is said to remain present, coexisting or integrating with the new one.

As of 2006, an increasing number of people claim some type of walk-in experience. Walk-ins were featured on the June 4, 1999 segment of Robert Stack's 'Unsolved Mysteries'. According to information presented on this program, there are now walk-in conventions, one of them drawing approximately 500 people.

Checklists to determine walk-in status include name changes, career changes, new interest in the study of psychic phenomena, a feeling that one is not really from Earth, or a sudden desire to move to a new environment.

Reported physical changes include memory loss and the sudden onset of allergic reactions. Since all of these factors could possibly be attributed to simple life changes such as adolescence or middle age, it's difficult to determine solely from such a checklist if a "true" walk-in has occurred.

The most logical method might be to determine if any specific event historically connected with walk-ins (anaesthesia for surgery is one of the most common) occurred around the time one first started feeling differently. There is, however, no known scientific method to prove whether or not the walk-in experience has any objective reality, let alone how to determine if one has occurred.

The belief system states that all souls come to earth in order to accomplish missions of cosmic significance, and that a walk-in is a highly evolved soul who is here to help raise the vibrational levels of humanity and doesn't want to bother with the tedious process of incarnating in the usual fashion (i.e., birth).

Walk-ins, according to New Age teachers, are not perfect like Ascended Masters, but are invariably more spiritual, compassionate and sympathetic than the original person.

This interpretation is sometimes disputed by the spouses of people who abruptly discontinue marital relations on the grounds that they are not the person whose name appears on the wedding license or that carnal love is not for those of higher vibrational frequencies. Separation, divorce, and remarriage are very common to the New Age walk-in experience.

Walk-Ins, Otherkin and Multiplicity

The "otherkin" community defines a walk-in by the standard definition, with the caveat that people with multiple personalities may have one or more perceived entities in their body who "walked into" the body of their host, without the host needing to depart; they believe this can happen right after birth, or later in the life of the person concerned. Such a person is described as an otherkin host, or simply as a host, and the foreign entity residing in them would be a walk-in.

The theorised origins of these souls vary. Some are thought to be human or animal spirits; others, creatures usually considered mythological; or extraterrestrial intelligences. They are thought to share the body space and take turns using the body, usually with permission and awareness.

Unlike the classic or Sybil-like description of multiple personality disorder, these groups of minds usually report getting on rather well and contribute energy and ideas to the host individual's life goals, as well as helping with activities of daily living.

Another phenomenon often confused with the abovementioned and classical walk-in experience is hosting. A host is a person who believes he voluntarily shares his body with other souls, usually but not necessarily since birth, while retaining his own consciousness and sense of self.

A person who believes he's sharing his body with otherkin walk-in spirits can said to be hosting; but according to reports by people who experience hosting, not all hosted spirits are walk-ins, nor are they necessarily otherkin.

Some hosts claim that the presences they experience as residing in their body are simply the spirits of deceased relatives, or friends or lovers from past lives. This is very similar to the description given by old-time Spiritualist mediums who believed they could allow a departed loved one or a spirit guide to take up residence in their body temporarily or permanently.

These mediums were the first to have the term "multiple personalities" applied to them. They experience a sharing of space and body time with the perceived spirit, usually with mutual respect and caring uncharacteristic of stereotyped MPD behavior as reported by psychiatrists.

The concept of voluntary possession or sharing of the body by more than one spirit is well known in many indigenous cultures. One of the central practices of Vaudon is to allow gods and saints to take temporary possession of human bodies, to give advice and help to all the people.

Folk healing on the island of Bali can involve ceremonies in which departed ancestors take over a living body for the same purposes. For the ceremony called Sanghyang Dedari (external link), two little girls are specially trained to become temporary vessels for a pair of angels, Tunjung Biru and Dewi Supraba, who come to remove bad luck and sickness from the village at the end of the monsoons.

In some Gulf Coast Indian tribes, leaders and healers are chosen from "those who have the most spirits living inside them."

Generally, hosts say they are able to change body control between the persons residing in their bodies at will; in such situations, they feel that the main or host self (in most cases, this is the soul of the original inhabitant) simply "takes a step back" and lets another entity "come forward" to control the body.

People who find themselves in a hosting or walk-in situation are also in a larger category, generally referred to simply as "multiples" by the otherkin community. Some otherkin multiples, and other people in walk-in hosting situations, stress that it is important to make a distinction between themselves and people who experience DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).

On numerous websites and Internet forums (where a certain amount of anonymity is possible), these people report being aware of the others and able to communicate and cooperate with them, again in contrast to standard popular and psychiatric conceptions of MPD or DID.

Such people often prefer to use internally-referential terms such as "people" or "selves" over the popular "personality" or psychological term "alter", which are considered misleading through the implication that each perceived internal entity is not a person in his or her own right.

Criticism

Experiences such as those described in this article are not regarded favorably by some mental health professionals. George Ganaway and other psychiatrists have written papers and given presentations reflecting their belief that all of these experiences, from traditional walk-ins to the New Age variety up to and including cooperative healthy multiples are mere attention-seeking and/or play-acting, or at best a "metaphor of distress" to express something the client feels is wrong but is having trouble describing.

I have actually never heard of this before, but it is very interesting. One of my best friends died for a short amount of time after a car accident and the paramedics brought her back. Since her recovery she snaps everytime calls her Amy instead of Mia and she sais "Amy is dead, I am not that person anymore".

I wonder if she experienced a walk-in with the another soul? It would make sense.

Walk-ins can be one of the reasons that those using a Ouija board need to be so careful. When opening up for using the Ouija, can let guard down for a walk-in to enter.

Been hearing about this before the new-age crew came about. The public first heard about walk-ins from Edgar Cayce. During his Atlantis readings. He mentioned that the Atlantians created these humans beings without souls. There would be kept until these walk-ins wanted to visit and enter the bodies to live in this world. Totally strange stuff and very hard to believe.

"i would think if two souls traded places it would be rather permanent and only one personality would appear."

It wouldn't be both souls in the body any longer. The one that wanted to leave this earth, is gone to the etherworld, and the otherworldly soul now resides in the body.

This is the first time I have ever heard of this. I'm not sure whether or not it could happen. It is a rather frightening possibility. To me, anyway. As for if this might be what happens when someone has a near death experience, I doubt it. I think people change after near death experiences because they suddenly realize there own mortality when they come face to face with it. I know that would certainly change my outlook on life. I am not saying this could not happen. I believe a lot of things are possible. I myself have just never experienced it or known anyone who has. Very interesting topic though. Also kinda creepy...

Like most things of a spiritual nature it's impossible to prove.

Part of me would like to believe it, but it comes too close to ...making a deal with God.

The idea of a person giving up and going home because life is too hard....just does'nt ring true for me.

As an example, if someone were very ill or even in a coma, then come out of it, but their personality, behavior, mannerisms, etc. were just 'off' people can assume there is a walk-in and the person that they knew is gone and another is using the body. Could this be a walk-in or just changes the person had from what they were dealing with?

well I have not ever heard of this yet Ibeing that I have worked in the medical field many many years.... I do know that people do become more up lifting and talkative etc before dying or passing on . Yet how would one prove that it could be another soul doing it? I guess anything is possible just like the angel of death maybe they are just there to help the transition... hummm this is really interesting and something to think about and even check out...

"It is a rather frightening possibility. To me, anyway."

Why is it scary? It isn't against your soul will, it's an agreement between your soul and another soul that is ready to come to earth for awhile.

And, to this person.... "The idea of a person giving up and going home because life is too hard....just does'nt ring true for me".....

This happens all the time where someone can't handle life anymore, and goes home. It's called SUICIDE.

I know there would HAVE to be PROOF that it is actually another Soul doing this to the person, yet as I had said earlier people that are close to death usually do have a burst of energy or become more talkative and active yet I think it is just their soul reviving the person just for a last time ya know.. not another soul entering them ... who knows...

And yes i think it is possible. I have meet some one that had their head crushed and lived. He was not the same person from what I was told. But maybe having your head crushed changes you. lol

That's um... an interesting theory, and I suppose it's entirely possible. We know little about spirits, really, and what they are able to do.
I've never encountered anyone who seems to have undergone a complete personality or 'soul' change. I have meet people with split personalities, but I do believe that that is a mental disorder, not a spiritual thing.

Lumiya took the words right out of my mouth. I could see a drastic set of circumstances changing someones personality. I see that as a far more likely reason than switching souls. Its a weird concept nonetheless.

Abaddon, multiple personalities have been mentioned several times in the thread.

So many 'mystical' or 'religious' events or dealings with people are truly neither of those two but simply a medical or rational, very much real, explanation.

Yea, this is different than multiple personalities. This is an agreement between earthly soul and other worldly soul, who are willing to trade places from here on out in this body. The earthly one could be ready to move on and the other worldly soul may want just a bit of time. Or perhaps, someone that has just passed over and wasn't ready to leave yet and wanted just a bit more time on earth?

Lumiya, Sorry, I don't exactly go through and read EVERY single post in every thread.

Jamie,

Who's to say that "walk-ins" are any different than multiple personality disorders or even "possession"? Is there any evidence to even backup what you are saying?

Or are we just going by someone else's word and what they have written?

I'm not asking these questions for the sake of argument, I'm just getting clarification, that's all. I actually find this subject interesting.

Very interesting theory. One would have to assume many things here.

1. How does the 'walk-in' maintain any memory of the life it has taken over?
2. Would a 'walk-in' retain zero memory of the life it has taken over?
3. Essentially it's like vacating a house and someone else moving in, so then it makes sense that the personality would change. Drastically. It would retain no understanding or memory or desire to associate with the acquaintances of the previous occupant's life: parents, co-workers, siblings, friends, etc.

Interesting theory. Unproveable yet very interesting.

i dont believe in walk-ins because if sum1 is only supposed to expierence a short time here on earth, they will die young.. they wont take ovr an exisiting body... the body is used for the indivisual soul, so when the soul is done, the body dies

Well maybe the soul coming in didn't want a whole life, but to work a few things out that they didn't before they left. ? And, didn't want to start over at baby stage.

I agree, that so much is possible. Mysteries just piss me off. ;)

I've never heard of this either, but anything is possible. maybe someone that committed suicide would be a prime candidate for a switch since they no longer want to live and might be willing to give up their body.

I don't think I buy into soul swapping, however I do see the possibility in the amnesia situation. People who have had near death experiences also show signs of a life altering moment, could this be a soul walk in? Good ?

Yes I understand the point you make about suicide Jamie.

What I meant was that if that were so, it would seem that instead of a person being given encouragement/help to work out their problems they instead are aided to do that which seems contrary to what many believe to be a fundamental truth or aspect of Spiritual law.

Abaddon, I don't think anything like this can be proved. As the questioner has stated, some cultures hold this belief.

It's an interesting theory. I tend to think the reason people become extremely different after a near death experience has to do with lack of oxygen to the brain. Of course, that's the medical professional in me.

Yes its possible if both souls agree. Its for the soul that felt it didn't finish something it needs to do. Also when a soul needs to do a task for a short time and a "whole life" is not needed.

I ahve heard of it, never personaly as in me experienced it but knew someone who tried to kill themselves and they were totally different afterwards. I also agree that it might have something to do with multiple personalities... Instead of a direct transfer your body sort of... lol, picks up a stray as to say from the astral realm.

I think it's human nature to reach for explanations for "things" that happen in life, including significant changes in the people we know. Sometimes when we know no other reasons, ones more feasible, we aim for the more "creative" potential explanations. This, however, leads me to pose a question...How many people do you know who have survived a significant/traumatic event who have NOT displayed some form of changes in personality traits? There are any number of reasons for this, predominately psychological ones.

...just something to think about.

I have to agree with Abaddon on this....

There are different accounts, in different books, etc. from people's experiences. Beyond that, I have not had it happen personally.

I don't believe in possession. I think we can get pretty worked up about shit. The mind is a powerful thing. It can talk itself into anything. And people can be pretty gullible.

But the only way we would truly know anything about possession, is if it were to happen to our self.
We can not go on living life going by hear say.
I find it better and wise to get the info, read into it, or what ever, to get facts.
I would like to believe in possession, but until it finally happens to me, then I will believe it.
I guess you could say that I am an Atheist on some things. :P

I disagree. The mind onlly knows what you tell it, or what you perceive is the truth........as you see it through YOUR eyes.

For instance, I have panic attacks and have had them since about 7 years old. One of the important things to think on and keep in mind, is that the brain goes by what you are telling it. It has no other eyes to see what is really going on. It goes by what you are telling it. If you tell it that you are unsafe and in danger, then the brain freaks out and the body follows. If you are telling the brain that you are on a beach and comfortable, happy and content, it goes with that.

Another thing, is that, I saw a show about people being hypnotized. They told the people that were under that they were going to touch them with a lit cigarette on their arm. Then the hypnotist touched their arm with their finger. The spot where they were touched turned red like it had been burned and the people jumped up like they had been burned.

The mind follows our lead and how we perceive the world and that comes from our experiences out in it.

i have wondered about something quite similar. there is a scientific theory that there are alternative worlds - ones very much like this, only slightly different - you may have made a different decision some point in your life, or you luck may have gone differently. if one of those alternative yous died in an accident that the you in this universe lived - or the acident never happened because you missed a bus or something - could your alternative selfs soul pass over into your body?

I have a friend who experienced this. She met a spirit who was a walk-in. Due to events that she was experiencing at the time, she was given the choice to stay or depart,-something like a near death experience. She ultimately chose to stay.

Doreen Virtue talks a great deal about incarnates and walk-ins in some of her books. It's a really interesting phenomenon.

I must say that the thought of a walk-in is quite creepy, to think that one minute you could be yourself, and then after conversing with spirits come back a different person... I'd have to stretch my imagination a little for this one, but the theory is really interesting. Thanks Jamie and Luminya for the informatkion!

This is what I found on this subject:

There are a myriad of different ways that Spirit is choosing to increase its expression through the human consciousness so it can increase its service on the Earth plane in these times of great spiritual awakening.
A WALK-IN is one method of entry for a service soul to incarnate into a physical body and for the first soul to leave, or walk out (a service soul being defined as one who has come to Earth to bring in higher frequencies). When a Walk-in occurs it's at a predetermined time and location agreed upon with the first soul to ensure the optimal astrol-ogical configuration is achieved.
If a high frequency service soul chose a mother vehicle with sig-nificantly lower frequencies than itself, a miscarriage would occur due to the incompatibility of frequencies. Instead a soul of more compatible frequencies incarnates first, grows the body and personality as it is quicker for the Walk-in soul to move into a existing body than to have to grow one from scratch. This is a high form of service for the first soul who leaves all experience behind so the personality remains fully functional.
Individual Walk-in experiences are quite unique. Usually there's a try on period of days or weeks where the new soul tries out the body which can feel like someone else is hanging around or a loss of time. Most Walk-ins were usually unconscious, many of them children. However, increasing numbers are occurring in fully conscious adults.
The first soul often manifests physical or emotional trauma to disrupt the person's habitual patterns for example, an illness or accident. This allows the Walk-in soul to integrate more deeply into the body's consciousness. Prior to this the person can feel a sense of completion with the old life and can spend time saying goodbye to people they have been close to. This can be quite difficult on those close to them who can feel as if they are being emotionally abandoned.
The old spiritual, mental and emotional bodies are released and new ones from the incoming Walk-in soul are infused. It is the physical body consciousness that maintains continuity. When the person looks at their life experiences, they view them with emotional neutrality as if someone else lived them. Unsatis-factory relationships and situations are usually resolved quickly.
A Walk-in provides a boost to the latent potential of the person-ality, which initially appears to remain the same. However, the Walk-in soul begins to remold it, and personality and preference changes start to manifest as it tries to find an optimal configuration in order to fulfill its purpose in coming to Earth. This change can be difficult for family and friends who want the personality to remain as it was before the Walk-in. Generally the person-ality becomes a lot more focused and driven after a Walk-in experience, especially in children.
From the body's view point, having its original soul walk out feels exactly like it is dying because it's the same process; the soul with-draws all of the life force energy from the cellular structure into the central core of light and exits through the crown chakra.
Immediately afterwards the Walk-in soul enters in a reversal of this process. As the body has not had this experience before and still be-lieves it is dying, it can try to reject the Walk-in soul. This can manifest as rheumatoid arthritis, partial par-alysis and allergies, depression, a general feeling of grief or wanting to die.
All of these occur because it takes time for the soul to fully integrate into the body and for the body to release the old emotional patterns and pictures of reality of the first soul. This can lead to the personality feeling somewhat schizophrenic at times.
The emotional acceptance of what has occurred is the most difficult part of this process for the personality of a Walk-in who is consciously aware of what has happened to them. If a person is not aware, then it can be very confusing. It is important to allow all of the feelings that come up, especially the grief, to be processed.
Walk-ins have a new life purpose, which builds on the foundation of abilities developed by the first soul. Unconscious Walk-ins usually have a strong feeling that there's something special for them to do in life, if only they knew what it was. So they start searching for it. This can be very frustrating, as conventional third dimensional reality goals just don't fit. Their purpose is gradually revealed over time, which allows for integration to occur more gracefully.
Conscious Walk-ins are usually up and running immediately and it can feel like being reborn again. If the body is finding it hard to integrate the new soul, it can be quite disorientating. Short-term memory loss often occurs in these cases as the brain functioning takes time to adjust to the new soul's mental body. Often they will burn out trying to do too much before full mind, body, spirit integration has occurred.
It is most important to be gentle with the physical body and to help its consciousness understand that it was especially chosen to serve the Walk-in soul and that it is loved and honored. This is critical to the integration process.

Okay, well let us take it personally..How would you feel to emerge a different soul after a seance. Think of how confusing that could be for everyone that knows you too!

Oh yes, exactly! Confusing for the rest of us. haha.....and perhaps a bit for the person when they wake? I mean, on a soul level this person has traded places on earth, but not necessarily on a conscious level.

This is an entirely new concept to me and I find it incredibly interesting. I can see the exchange of souls in a near-death experience (NDE), although I would think it is rather uncommon. I'd also say that it might simply be that a NDE is enough to send anyone into a changer of personality, especially directly after their revival.

Such a thing as attempted suicide can alter the personality, not least of which is the sheer shock at discovering the intent has not been 'realised', but walk-ins if they occur could well occur if a person is at low ebb, mentally and spiritually. Your daughter was very lucky, Madam J, and best wishes to her, ok?

Huh...I've never even heard of that. It seems entirely possible, even would make more sense for those "near death enlightenment" experiences and mental disorders.

Usually a spirit will piggy-back if it is a weaker one, like a imp. Only happens if you don't do a protection spell first or a Novice. Just keep your circle tight and your animals close in and out of your circle. I keep my German Shepard in the circle and the cats out.
