I have always wondered why death is to be feared? I mean, is it not just the next step to life???
I heard this song once:
"When death smiles and waves all you can do is smile and wave back"
What do you think the meaning of this is??
Death is feared for it is unknown to us. That's what scares mortals on the basis of what we do not know. As for your saying, to me i think when death arrives smile and welcome it for you can not escape. Something like that.
Well the reason why people fear death is because they value monetary things too much. Some fear death because of not wanting to be away from family and loved ones. When a person finally believes that life continues after death then more people will smile and wave when death smiles and waves back.
I dont fear death i just think about the people and loved ones that arent gonna be there every day....my grandson for one...will i still be able to see and hear him? Thats what im gonna miss
It means that once death comes knocking at your door, there is no escaping. The only thing you can do is let it in and let it take you.
Death is a gateway to our next life, the only fear we have is leaving our loved ones behind and missing what was. It's natural to be scared.
To accept your fate... it is your time to meet death...
I've always heard stories of elder people describing inner peace and a sudden calm when they feel that their time has come.
re: people jumping off buildings, for their own sake, I'd really hope that that is the case and that they die of heart failure before hitting the concrete. That's one terrible way to die.
I have no fear of death, I do however have a fear of those close to me dying. I hate loosing loved ones & I know that's purely selfish but damn, it hurts like hell!
death is feared by mortals because they have no control of it, and it means that everything they strived for and hoped to happen were proved worthless
I'd say it's because you can do absolutely nothing about it, wether you want to or not, it's inevitable, so I reckon it's saying embrace it.
I think that the reason that people fear death is because nobody knows what happens after death. it represents the unknown and people generally tend to fear what they do not know.
Death can be scarry, but I think if we try to let go of that fear, then death is not really somethingv to fear and is more our next logical step. I also think it may get easier to accept as we get older and have gotten to experience life more. But I guess until I die I will not know for sure.
I've always believed that death is a natural progression in life. I don't think it's something to be feared. Even if it does end up being fiery brimstone it's not all bad, it's meant to be.
Now what if your true love died 1st what would you say then?
Death is an unknown thing to humanity. All we know is that once you are gone you do not come back. So we fear it. We don't want to lose everything that we have. It is an instinct to be afraid of anything unknown.
Many people, to include myself, are wary of death because they don't know what to expect. Heaven? Hell? Nothing at all? It could be anything. And besides, many worry about the things they would be leaving behind: family, possessions, etc. What's to become of them? It's distressing to think about.
Dying means you stop existing -- stop living -- stop breathing, seeing, hearing, feeling.
It's only natural.
Death is natural, it'll come anyway. I think some ppl fear it 'cause they don't know whats on the other side.
The only thing I fear of death is how im to die .I wondr if im to be killed or die in a accident or etc
I think one can die peacefully if they come to a point in their lives knowing they have truly lived and not lived to regret. Living to fear death, isn't truly living. I view life and death as our seasons. Most may say they do not fear death, until perhaps the day they will really have face it. All one can do is accept that this is everyone's fate at some point so it's best to live like tomorrow and do the things you normally wouldn't do so that you can face that moment saying....I truly lived.
redvampress, I agree with you but death can come in many forms like being trapped in a burning car or building, cancer, a regular car accident even if it wasn't your fault or not. Life is an unexpected happennings and life can throw curve balls when you least expect it.
When death comes (and it always will sooner or later) we might as well go with a smile....because kicking and screaming won't make it go away..
attached to the conscious mind death is a wait, a burden and uncertainty. To the sould death could be the release to beyond letting my concious accept that my soul "has a destination" is plenty for me. Anxiety I see in others about death is attached to feeling unfulfilled in this life.. without me being here .. etc. etc.
The Transition whether "expected" or unexpected. Is not fearing death but more likely fearing the cause of departure, a doubt in your destination could really make for a conscious panic in most people. I have spoke with many people that have been on the threshold of departure, having been there my self. I wondered what made me hesitate and if I had stepped back to a disabled body, what would have been the point. I want to relax when I die and after the last blast of sensation or waying heart beat I want to slip out of a me intirly and as far as possible. I want no remaining attachment to here. enough of my memory is here. A particle left behind on this planet is enough for me.
TigerLillith is on the right track for me. I think if I live my life with no regrets then I can meet death with less fear and drama for those around me.
Death comes in the blink of an eye and in the slowness of time; with a gentle hand or with a horrid burtalness. We can not stop it - for it does come for everyone.
I think it is how we have lived and what we believe comes after that makes the transition easier.
I think death is feared because nobody knows for sure what happens afterwards, because there's really no solid proof for it...I think it's the terrible possibilities that make it scary.
To me, that means that when death comes, there isn't really much you can do except accept it, because death is the final battle that can only be lost.
Death is feared too because it's so sudden in alot of cases. Not knowing it's coming is scary.
Some people fear death because they don't want to leave their loved ones.
Because when your time comes you have no say in the matter. And no I don't feel that it is the next step to life to the contrary I believe that death is the end. It all depends on your individual beliefs. I fear death because it is final.
should death come for me befor i am ready, well i'm ginna be pissed. i'm do not fear death i am just not yet ready to more on. the saying to me states the odviese once death has come for you, its time and you can't stop it.
A natural death, ie to die in your sleep - is the way to go. I do fear death if it comes to me in a way that really scares me...like drowning. Getting shot in the head would be better - quick, where I won't be conscious of every breath leaving me, ya' know?
I agree that, as to what happens after death, scares a lot of people. No one knows no matter who says they have a near death experience or something like that. If you're thinking that your life is bad now then what if it just gets worse? What if you're not with the people you love after you die? What if you just go completely out of existance? Wow... now I'm scaring myself...
That's true PB, death is so final and irreversible that it adds to the our fear of it. But I do guess that it's just the natural progression of things since all that is born shall die, learning not to fear it is the only way we can diminish the pain.
Death is the big sleep and we don’t know what really happens, properly stop being.
To lose a loved one and stay here this side impossible for love transcends life and reality
Death is the fear of the unknown. We hear different stories about what death is like but util we get there ourselves we will never know and that is what scares us.
I dont fear death i know my time will come and I just hope its quick and not long and painful what i fear is the unknown. and to the person above me i forget the name you are not weak if you fear it and you shouldnt judge people on how u feel
I don't think that being afraid of death means that somebody is weak. It just means that they are human and that they have emotions like everybody else. It's only natural.
i agree life is just one step of life and death is just us passing thru to the next step
i think that death is natural and just a natural progression after life. what happens after death doesn't matter because it'll happen to everyone and since no one knows what comes next there's no sense in worrying
I believe that when death comes knocking on your door, you should just relax, lay back and accept it. There is nothing to fear. I grew up in a family who taught me that there is nothing to fear about death. We have always talkd about it like it is nothing. Just another pat of lfe.
All good posts you have made and I appreciate the responses because I thought this was going to get RIA'D for sure but you the people prove me wrong.
And what emotion do you think evokes the brain this fear?
All so is it because we are attached to the flesh?
I could care less about the flesh. It's the experiences that have helped me to grow. The bad things that have happened have made me who i am today and who i am has nothing to do with the flesh. If i died knowing that i would not come back, i would make the best of today and cherish the good times and the gifts that life has given to me. ^^
The primary drive of life is to re-produce and the only way to do that is to stay alive.
The body serves the brain, without it the brain would die. So the brain will do everything it can to stay alive including cutting blood from every organ except the heart, lungs and brain.
Fear is an emotion brought about by several neurotransmitters.
Fear is our brains way of letting us know danger is near. Without fear we would stick out fingers in light sockets, do drugs, fight all the time, not get out of the way of fire etc.
It's natural to not want to die so when our mind thinks it's about to it will send out messages say "danger, look out, stop this, help.."
The key is overcome the fear of death because we're all going to die one day. The act of death itself is painless and instant.
hmm, myself I used to fear death because it was something that I didnt know, and couldnt control. However, I've come past that and am not afraid any more
That all depends whether you believe in an existance after death.
Thank you Zxavior for your help on the matter and all so for all the other helpful posts everybody has made.^_^
Death is enevitable. and yes it is th next step. And yes all you can do is smile and wave back.
very true but it is also the beginning of the end, for every death there is a birth and for every birth there is a death
When you're dead, you're dead. People fear death because they'd rather be alive, generally. Lately I've been doubting exsistance after death, and questioning the exsistance of souls. Death is inevitable yes, but I for one will go on fearing it because there are no guarantees that there's anything to be had after you die. As far as I can see right now, once you're dead, you're dead.
I think people fear death for many reasons, dependes on the person: fear of the unknown, death is something that undermost circumstances we dont have much control over- some fear the lack of control, some just fear the end of their existance, or feel they left things "undone" everybody who fears has their own personal reason even if they don't understand it themself.
But as far as the lyrics go when death really comes calling you dont have a choice all you can do is go. Smile and wave goodbye to this existance. We all got to go sometime or another.
At this point i feel obligated to quote Jacobs Ladder “If you’re frightened of dying and you’re holding on then you’ll see devils tearing your life away. If you’ve made you’re peace, then the devils are really angels freeing you from the earth.” hehe
its true that as a species we fear the unknown. then again, why should we fear what we do not know? (anyone who has read my story journal would remember this line ^_^)
to be honest, i think that we are able to suffer much more in life than we do in death.
I think many fear death because it is one of the few factors we have absolutely no control over. All we can do is wait for it to happen while we live the life that has been given to us.
It is unfair that some people have to die very young and many by the hands of others and that could be another fact; no one is safe from death, and just because you live a healthy and apparently quiet lifestyle is not an insurance against a long life since accidents happen.
I know the studies as well that a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your body can prolong your life, but still if you are destined for death, it does not matter how many carrots you eat.
Death however is not to be feared, but welcomed. Your time will come no matter what, but of course it would be most fortunate if you were to live a long and happy life.
"When death smiles and waves all you can do is smile and wave back''
Death smiles and greets you. You might as well as smile and wave back because you cant do anything about it.
When your time is up, your time is up.
I do not fear death at all, when its your time to go u have no control over it. And what comes after death we will only know when it happens to us
I believe that people fear death because of the unknown. And the loss their friends & family will feel. Personally, I do not fear death for I have died once & was brought back. I believe that when it is your time that there is nothing you can do about it so you might as well embrace it.
It is not death that I fear, but the eternity afterwards that frightens me so. For those that believe in heaven, or hell, or whatever your religion is, I feel that it can only last so long before i spiritually go insane in the depths of eternity. You cannot just blink yourself out of existence and make it end, that is the worst part. My mind always haunts me with the thought of eternity, almost to the breaking point.
I was once afraid of death until I experienced it and realized its just a step we all must one day take. I do fear leaving those I care for behind when I go, but I know eventionally they will again join me, death is but a change we all must make, to move on to better things, but not knowing what lies ahead can be very freightning for some.
death is always painful. Maybe thats a good part of the fear
The only aspect of death that might be frightening for me, would be the pain involved if it happens to be either a violent death, or a death that includes gasping for air. The sensation of feeling suffocated is scary to me.
That aside, I am not fearful whatsoever of what may happen after death. Granted, I hope I have a long life and that my death is gentle, but if I were to die tonight, I wouldn't be afraid with the exception of the physicality of it all.
I see the song as saying that once death comes there is nothing you can do. You must accept it. As for why people fear it, well I believe that is because no one really knows what cames afterwards. Sure we all have our beliefs, some very different, but still no one knows. So it is the fear of the unkown.
People fear what they dont understand. No one really knows what happens to us when we die, if we just fade out like a light, if we go to heaven or hell or maybe we are reincarnated. So people make up things and cling to ideals to make them selves feel better about it.
To most people, death is the end to everything they know and love. There is no scientific proof that there is anything beyond death, another place (heaven or hell), another life, or any way or means to return. It is simply the end. Why wouldn't one fear death? Can you or anyone prove there is something more after death? Even if it could be proven, at death you are leaving and losing your loved ones.
I wanted to add - Although I am afraid of the possible physical pain of death that I may experience , I
am unafraid of dying regarding whether or not there is something aferwords.
If there indeed is something, then there is nothing I can do but face it, irregardless of whether it is positive or negative. And if there is nothing, and I just simply blink out of existance, I won't know it. So I won't experience any fear. There wouldn't be a chance to.
So fearing death seems like an unnecessary fear to have while I am still alive.
"Life is just a dream of death".
I like that saying...
I fear death, because I have so much to live for... but sometimes I find myself wondering what is beyond... and once my mission here is done, I think I'll find out...
Maybe , we should look at death as the game clock resetting. If so, you are coming back, if you want.
Has anybody ever experienced like the light at the end of a tunnel or something around those borders????
no I cant saay that I have, And I've had 2 near death experiences. All there was-was black. No light, no nothing. But I've had people tell me numerous things about near death...the light, a beautiful garden, going back to the child hood
Well really death is what you believe it to be. It can either be the end, or the beginning of a journey. The problem is that no-one has come back from death to give us the true story. Is this were faith comes in?
Most people fear to die becaue they have lead a useless life.
Death is your greatest journey. One of unknown (darkness) to one of hopefully answered questions(light). Death is fear of leaving loved ones, unknown of what/where your going, are you really finished here.
I really would like to believe that there is journeys after death, but I think that is a romantic notion that softens the impact for the living. There again, it is a case of personalities also..if you are an optimistic person it could alter your perception of death from that of a person who is pessimistic.
I see so what is the whole light thing about........I mean to say why should a person be afriad death is just apart of the circle of life. Right??
When I was in college I took a class called death and dying. It's an interesting course and it may seem a little off the wall but it was one of the best classes ever!!! Anyway, Death in most cultures isn't feared... It's something people celebrate. In all cases people fear what they are not able to explain. For those who celebrate death, they are happy with the way things are going and feel no ill emotiones about passing. Other and this is the root of the fear... Nothing to show for their lives. Was a good life? Will I leave something for my family? Will I ever have a family? That kinda thing.
Wolfkiller: That really is your belief and so I, would not be able to give you the reply you seek. However, everybody has different views on life and do why should that be any different in death :)
Death.
It is a word that scares most.
But Death is the (in my belief) gateway to new and blessed life with the Goddess.
Lets put it this way:
Life is school teaching you how to live after life.
Thank you marajade and all so hell is there i a place I believe so a deep place where evil slumbers and waits to return to our world.
I don't believe in a heaven, or hell after death. I believe that right now we are walking our own hell, and when we die shall go to the other side to rest up for our next life. I do believe in reincarnation. I think death is a wonderful thing, but at the same time it scares me. I have lost so many people in my life. Especially in 2001 when September 11th came around, that whole summer before that horrific thing happened I lost21 family members, and friends over the Summer.
I have seen death as it happens, and have seen the after affects of it. I am still grieving for my grandfather. I think I will never be able to get over that, but he died in a peaceful state. I would never want to be hurled off of a building, or die in a closet suffocating to death. Being ran over would suck. My fear is being alone, and dying.
Death can be a beautiful thing, and an ugly thing, but this is the circle of life. It's all how you handle it.
Death is feared because we dont know what is after that. But also no reason to fear what u cant control
I use to be afraid of death but I just accept it now. If it happens it happens. There's no point going through life being afraid of dying. It happens to everyone.
wolfkiller -
If someone truly experienced 'the light at the end of the tunnel' wouldn't they have passed on?
Shamans use these "tunnels" for healing others. Some Shamans evenbelieve that this is what people actually see or pass through when they die. It is something that everyone has in front of them and some people tend to look at it without really knowing it's there.
I think people are afraid of death because..it is the end.
Nothing will continue.
Many people are afraid of not acomplishing certain goals before they die.
I myself am afraid of death..
There is nothing we can do about death, it is the great equalizer...
Isaac Asimov had this to say "Life is easy, death is peaceful, it is the transition that is troublesome".
