Even as i type this, there is a part of me measuring the time it takes to write this out. When i woke up this morning, i was aware of how long it took me to get my ass outa bed, i timed how long i brushed my teeth for, i also planned how long i could go without going out to the shop to get myself a lucozade.
Tell me, am i the only one? Can you imagine a world without time? Would we still age in some sense? Maybe only in a physical form?
I understand that the thought of time just disappearing is a little...unnerving, which stand's as proof of how much we are accustomed to it, even as we sleep.
Would you prefer to live without it?
Can you even imagine living without it?
Who's bright idea was it to "Create" it anyway!
But whatever, we can never turn back time
i wish we could
"Time" as we know it was invented by man...even without sun dials...watches...clocks and calenders..."time" would still pass...we just wouldn't be keeping track of it.
there wouldnt be anything if there wasnt time.
even b4 we couild tell time there was time.
it just wasnt known,
this is an odd post
yes, but i think existance runs alot smoother with time.. It was a great discovery..
but there was always time..
from the second the sun was made there was time..
and counting came b4 time.
that's how mintues came along
they counted the "seconds"
So no one beleive's we could be happier Not living our short live's by the hand's of a clock?
I honestly like having something to measure time as it passes for us.
Like DarkWolfman said, even if we didn't have something to measure time with it would pass us just the same.
Well i happen to think of this quite often and even wrote a poem about this very thought. Now i think if time was no more we would not age because without time our bodys stay still in a sence we will feel older but thats about it. and things would be going by really slowly making days alot longer.
Before the first watch or clock or time piece...the sun was used to keep "time" then the sun dial was invented...now everything is done by "time".everyone has to follow a schedule...when there was no time trackers...people lived a peaceful life and never HAD to be somewhere at a certain "time".I say people that never wear watches or have appointemnt books...have less stress and live life easier.
Concepts of time sometimes make life worse instead of better.
I would rather not have a clock that tells me i have to be a certain place at a certain time. It is a total bother. But the world would be chaos without it.
Cultural as well as individual perspective should be taken into account, look at the Mayas, completely different concepts of time!
Clocks, sundials, and watches are merely manmade items to measure something which invariably exists. It is only natural for a human to mark there existence by measuring time, it's been done since the beginning of our existence and will continue until its end. Before we had more exact measurements, they went by the number of days and nights or even the steady alteration of the seasons. Time exists and will continue to do so whether we measure it or not, it's simply a part of this existence.
i dont really think about it
but
time
well by the time ive written this
it will be history
true
I have never really thought about it before but if 'time' didn't exist. Nothing would ever make progress.
But are you speaking of 'time' as in years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds, etc?
If you are, I think we would be more care-free and friendlier. So many people in today's societies are in a rush. Usually their in too much of a hurry to even say 'excuse me' in the city after bumping into you. I think it would do some good to get rid of watches and clocks. I know I love the days when I don't even know what time it is because I'm more relaxed. I don't feel as though I have to rush to get something done. I think the lack of stress would make everyone change at least a little.
There is no getting away from time. It will happen with or without a mechanism to keep track of it. The modern world is very obsessed with time. Everything from the work day/week to our age. We have to keep calendars and clocks to manage our life and what a stressor that is!!!!!!!!!!!
I do find it amazing that time seems to vary based on how occupied the mind is......When I sit in front of the computer...........TIME FLIES and when I am lying in bed awake.......TIME DRAGS uuuggghhhh...
Sometimes I do wish time could be turned back.. But actually would that fix things or would we make the same mistakes that we made the first time we were there.?
If there were no time, we would not be here. Evolution wouldn't have happened as there would have been no time for it to happen in...
Man simply gave a name to the passing of time, it wasn't an invention. That's like trying to say that oxygen was invented...
The mind boggles...
But that's all in your own perspective. It doesn't really slow down or speed up, it just seems that way.
Who says we have the right system to measure time? We can only guess and have one system for most to go by.
But I'm sure it was the same before clocks and watches were invited or the time system came about...
When they did something less then enjoyable, it took forever to complete. When they did something they liked, it flew pass them and they wished they had more time to spend on it.
I'm the same way and I think everyone does that.
"Time" itself has always existed...but the invention of the Sun Dial or watch...clock WAS invented to keep track of "TIME".
In all reality, time is not its own thing but merely the progression of existence.
From reading the reply's, it would seem people have diferent concepts of time...
First concept of time - if it didnt exist (Asin, we didnt measure it, it was simply there in the background) We would still exist, we would still progress, we just wouldnt rush everything >.
What the hell? VR just chewed up half of my reply...
You son of a B..-
what oceanne said.
also time stops for me.
whenever I've worn a watch --- high end or low --- they stop, or
I break the glass with a
flick of the wrist, or
I can't stop looking at time, until
it stops.
There are two forms of time, observed time which is what we measure in hours, days etc. and universal real time. URT is the time that stays constant (minus the force of gravity) and that continues in a straight line regardless of what "names" we give it.
With out the force of time, thought, movement, life, nothing but cold static matter could exist...and theres even some debate that nothing at all could exist with out time.
The time we "live by" I'm sure can be changed a bit to allow for a happier life, but, without the concept of time we could not plant/harvest crops, engage in meetings or have technology with microprocessors etc.
Personally I have a limited concept of perceived time, a day is a year and a year was last month. But day to day time can be very useful :)
It was ancient human's bright idea to creat a standard of which to measure time with. They used their surroundings and knowladge(observational) of the cosmos to create calendars and "time"
Although now that time is actually established... personally, I could do without "Daylight Savings Time"
To me if its 2 pm, its 2 pm.. period. Why change it twice a year!!
Like I said before it would be cool if we could change things but like Xzavier said it's pretty difficult to live a life without time.
I think it's just human nature to measure things, how else would we undertand the world around us?
Plus, I read this thing about time and parallel universes and it said even if we could go back in time we couldn't change things in this universe because the very act of traveling back would create a new parallel universe.
Can't say I really understand all that but it's interesting to think about.
time is just relative to where you happen to live in the universe.
say ya live on a less stable of an orbit around a sun that is much larger than our own. the axis is wonky and the spin is very slow. time would have a whole new meaning. years would be much longer yet days much shorter and seasons would be a joke.
wait i said spin slower didnt i. well no need to correct me, wheres the edit button when you need it.
Time would only be different than our current perceptions of it. However true time would be about the same.
Few stars have the mass needed to alter universal time by more than 0.05-1%. And of course your distance from the star must come into the equation.
What we perceive as time has no real meaining outside the confines of our little planet. The moment you reach orbit your no longer in Eastern Standard Time ;)
Our human time and the cosoms 'true' time does seem to have two different 'times'
And if we have a watch to go by time by or not. 'time' does go on.
I think also what i am thinking to this is, if there was no 'time' that it just time stood still persay. And we still contuned. Would one still compare it too 'time'?
Time is simply a method of aging something, there has to be systems in place!
"Time" is irrelevant in most cases. Even if the watch did not exist, days would still maintain their equasion. The moon would still follow the sun in their endless cycle. Even if you were to cross the threshold of space, you would still age. Maybe slower, maybe faster, depending on where you were at within the universe and its boundaries of the space/time continuum.
Now, if the individual were to cross the parallel between here and the ethereal, time would not measures by days, weeks, months, years or even decades...But by eternities, aeons and googleplex's. Once the individual crosses this line, all time will be irrelevant since it is measured by an eternity clock. Much like that of the book and movie: Narnia. I think this example best suites my point.
SoulShroude:
Your absolutly right on. The moment you cross over that line time is your play thing and there is no measurement adequate for such things :)
As we all know , man has developed ways to measure time as he knows it.
Picture time as money you HAVE to spend and budget .Make the best of what you are alotted.
Interesting thread. If there was no time, then how would employees know when their shift was over. How would the next person know when to come in. Does that mean the first person would be stuck there working all day until someone felt like strolling in to work? Things wouldn’t work right without time. Still I believe a world without time would have it’s interesting moments. No one would age, so the world would end up over populated. Money wouldn’t mean as much, because no matter how many hours you worked you would still get paid the same amount. However people would be more laid back & carefree without the drive to get things done with time restrictions.
Very interesting, I think we can use our time wisley but alot of us tend to lose track of time
also and there is no way to turn back time especially lost time, . People say you can make up for the time lost . I dont believe that The time lost is lost,
and forgotten.
Alot of time is wasted not doing constructed things and taking the time out to really think ,I can relate to getting out of bed, I sleep usually half the day but then the day is wasted, The past few days I have been waking up very early dont know why
As Mick Jagger would say, "time is usually" not" on my side" a bit of a misquote there*grins* Working in th field of emergency medicine time is usually my enemy. We usually have one hour to stablize someone or their chances for survival go down almost to 40%.
So yes I wish I had some control over time, so many things, I would have done differently. Many things I would have taken the time to say, instead of thinking..oh there is plenty of time..
time is just a unit of measure that is all if you do not let it control you you will not need to live by the clock just like some people with their weight
SouthernFreak,
In taking a quote from your post:
"Things wouldn’t work right without time. Still I believe a world without time would have it’s interesting moments. No one would age, so the world would end up over populated. "
*********************************************
I was wondering if there were no time, how then could the world be over populated? Once a baby is concieved , it basicly ages from then on , so in fact it would never grow old. Just a thought.
'Time' is a constant only because we made it such, humanity needed an easy way to survive and sectioned off parts of the day and night into hours, minutes,seconds... almost like the way you see money go, you have you bills your ok with change then dimes nickles and pennies. Personally I dont really belive in this time thing, we hare her for our exsistance then off to the next. For some reason humanity felt the need to make time a comodity, 'times is money' im sure we have all heard that. Now SF makes a good point, it does let us know when we have worked enough for the day that we can go home for a however long of freedom, usually spent sleeping, just to go back and spend more of your time to get what you need to survive. Time is basacally another bartering system, pending on what you do then you time is worth this much. Makes you wonder, and I belive it was the first post on here that question came up of who invented time. Think about way way back before the sundial, it was we have this much light lest get out nessecities and that be that. Personally I dont care for the 'time' thing, guess that why im always 'late' for a lot of things. I like Gandolph's answer of I'm never late nor am I early, I arrive precicely when i mean to. I think i could do without time.... less stress over something that doesnt really exsist, unless you really let it..... but then again, how do we undo something that we have invented and made a part of ourselves? And would this be a catastrophy or something that would better us over all?
Sure I could do with out time.. I wouldn't know how long though.. hehe
besides people here in California.. we already warp time to our whim.
As I don't work, time means little to me. Except when I have a doctor's appointment or something along those lines. I go to bed when I want. I get up when I want. But, I know I also age each day as well. Even though I don't need a clock, that doesn't mean that time has stopped. Time will forever be ticking away.
Time happens and it cant be changed the clock only tells us what time it is. If we throw away the clock it still wont change the fact that time continues to go on
i have to agree with xzavier here. you can't really get rid of time without stopping everything. this is because if there is no time there can be no acceleration, which means no movement of any kind, even on an atomic level. but it would be interesting to stop it for a little while, just to see if it starts again.
So then why not the past.. I mean why the future.. was the past so boring as well. I can predict the future .. if I was able to go back to the past.. then I could ask a person if they really thought obsessing over time and letting it pass uneventfully is any way to effect the future likelihood that something eventful will happen.
Time is unfortunately a necessary evil. Much like cellphones...
I'm curious about daylight savings time..who's saving it and what are they gonna do with it all?
i believe daylight savings time was created to give farmers an extra hour of light to work in their fields to increase productivity
Buy stock.. in the future.. hehe.. why Styck? would you like an extra hour .. go ahead take an hour George bush did..
LOL...I'm aware of the meaning behind daylight savings time. I understand why it was created. Loosen up people. Dabbler got it..
I can't imagine a world without time. I believe it would be total chaos.
Without time to base our actions on the world would become very chaotic, can you imagine people running aimlessly trying to do tasks, how could you base anything on completion without time? Yikes it would be freaky.
If there was no time how would I know when to get off work becuse where I work there is something all ways to do so there is no end job at a store that is open 24 7
I see some of you are imagining walking on the earth without time... I cant imagine that.. I cant imagine time.. it is such a relative thing that I can't say what would happen if it will stop.. but can the time stop?
Foreverseeking2,
Your question:
"I was wondering if there were no time, how then could the world be over populated? Once a baby is concieved , it basicly ages from then on , so in fact it would never grow old. Just a thought."
Well some comments have been made throughout this post about people not aging if there is no time. If the situation were such as this then, yes the world would get over populated. The adults would not age, babies would still be born, so then we would be over populated with new birth, yet the old would never die to allow room. Unless you are meaning that no births would happen. If that were the case, then no the world would not become over populated.
So many aspects of it too.Whether its keeping track of time ,having good timing..or even meter etc...
that is funny.. the adults wouldn't age at all but the babies will be born...
the baby is growing inside his mother in order to be born.. that is absurd... it's contradictory with the fact that adults are not getting old..
Ok i find this totally true!
I may sound like a freak, but i also ponder on why certain things are called certain things.
Like what makes a boat a boat? why isnt it a aobt? why are letters arranged in a certain way. Who decided thier meaning?
I totally get the concept of your message. Why do we have time? Who made it? why is it so widelyused? It's life's mysteries
While stuff is happening time will pass even if there was no clock.
If there was no clock how'd get organised?
How we'd know the right moment to wake up for work, the moment to meet with friends etc... surely it is stressing and it often time is seen as an enemy, but it could be a friend to, it is said time heals :)
Anyway wish I could turn back time and stop it.
I am never ready, I always have something to do and am always in a hurry and late grrr.
And indeed, even if there was no time, and adults wouldn't age, then babies wouldn't get born nor grow either.
Even if there was no clocks.. our bodies and nature would keep track of time, letting us know when to eat, when to sleep and we would age.
Days become night and seasons would come and go.
Clocks are just ways of organization, helping us fit as much into the little time we have!
even though man created time pieces our own bodies run on a clock of their own we were all made that way i think without our clocks and watches that we would all fall to pieces knowing have i missed something? oh wasnt i supposed to be at...? it would be complete chaos time is an essential piece of our living..
I would prefer to go back in time if I could. Maybe redirect some of my actions slightly.
If you think the future is already happened or preset...then watch The Langoliers by Stephen KIng.
Basically...the future is already there...you just slowly meld into the world as it comes into existance.
Perception at once shapes the mind and the rules over time. Time however erodes human perception, and then in turn warps the mind. The mind is Capricious, having various effects on perception, time, and the mind itself...with harmony progress is made. Chaos like the mind, can be understood only through scientific process. order, however is only as good as the perception there of. Time is the key that links the two and bears witness thier ebb & flow.
I think the concept of time was invented by man. Like scheduling an appointment for a certain time. It's just to keep order. How ever if we had never come up with keeping track of time I think it would still pass, but as for a world with out time, then no one would age. With no one aging or growing older how would babie's grow inside their mother's in order to be born? I think if time suddenly disappeared everything would be chaotic but maybe no one would be able to give birth to a child. I find this whole subject confusing...
I actually believe time a fallacy yes we all are forced to live on it however go back to say the 1500's or earlier they didnt have so much time as they did sun up sun down sun rise.
and everything in between time is a new world concept that majority of us dont know how to live without some actually have a fear of not knowing the time. And some go out to the middle of no where to evade time.
hmm I dont think i could live with thining if time its a constent for me as it was in the ealy eras and will always be
lol this does bring up a good point,i myself am also always timing myself and checking my watch but if there was no such thing as time i think most people would not set goals or achieve things,i think it would be possible that society would be rather lazy bu thats just my opinion.
I`ts seems there is never enough time ..
Say for instance you have kids , you work.
Days pass then months years ..You look in the mirror your older, your kids are growing up . Then the concept hits you where has time gone ..
i wish i could... even time... how to judge ourselves without it?
I put this in another thread, but thought I might here as well.
I'd love to have no time track. I could get out of bed when I want to, stroll into work when I feel like it, do whatever I want, when I want to without any kind of restrictions.
But I do think that we would get bored of that way of life.
I guess it doesn't really matter what we think about time - it passes no matter what...If we didn't measure it - it would still pass. Makes me think a little - being in nursing - people are living longer and time - as far as what we consider old has changed a lot. People live into their 90s and still are active - so it seems like time is stretching for humans. Bad for the environment - good for the old people ...hehe
A world without time is simply impossile to comprehend as we live within the dimensions of time and space - take the time away and you're simply left with space...
Although I can really see where you're coming from, time can be a bit of a bitch sometimes..
Do you think that if we simply lived in a universe in the dimensions of space, that we could 'control' time freely? It sounds like a perfect universe to me!
this is quite a strange post one that makes u think morbid thoughts :] he he anyways myt thoughts on time are pretty pointless b/c no matter what it will roll forward we can recall the past in our minds but never can we change whats been done and even if there was no such thing as the word, or a meaning, and no one knew of it doesn't mean it wont exist b/c if it didn't exisit I would think we would be living in sort of a ground hog day it will always be day or night and nothing would change no one would age and everything would stay the same way u would live in that moment forever so u better hope it's a sweet moment...
A world without time can't exist even in theory.
People move with time. Breathe, sleep, exist with time.
Without time nothing would move. Nothing would exist. No one would be born or die or move or live.
It is impossible.
It is impossible and to say what you said about time, Distortion... you don't know.. nobody knows:) and that's my concept of time:)
No one "created" time, they simply created devices to measure and track the passing of time.
Time would still pass even if we had no way to keep track of it. People would still grow old and die. The world would still have a beginning and an end.
It would be good to live in a world where time is not strictly tracked, imagine being able to get up whenever you wanted, go to work whenever you wanted and leave whenever.
In a world without time, nothing would happen and the world would seem permanently frozen in one state. Time is like a 4th dimension. Everything in the world has a physical position (height, width and depth) but it also has a position in time. Time has to pass in order for things to happen
and why worry about it. I think people put way too much emphasis on time and ages.
time itself is just a label or a measure but as things are not frozen we need time to be or how could anything happen in the universe
In our 4D universe nothing can exist without time. It is the essence of the stuff we're made of. Our universe (and thus time as we know it) was created by an outside force.
Heres just one article which supports my theories.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7440217.stm
If you exist outside the confines of 4D then time becomes (in a way) your play thing, and has no meaning or limitations.
there would be no existance w/out time, time will always occur, even if we didn't keep track of it. but man is responsible himself for creating "Time"
for the most part i think it was created just as a way to keep track of the months such as with a calender by early civilizations butthen as time passed time became more detailed in how we learned to use it more and more in our everyday life.
Xzavier - Like such would be, say possibly, in a different demention?
KaddaveR - It's kind of like when time would freeze. Emphasis on Kind of. ;]
I can understand that. I suppose there is that possibility that it would still be the same without time.
