How does one build karma?
Good karma, bad karma, or anything in between?
Is it in the things we do? The things we think about?
Our actions, or the lack of?
I am a firm believer that Karma is within our actions.
.. i always believed that it was just how you lived.. if there wad a way to make it better im all ears..
to ME:
Karma is a myriad of energy that we collect around ourselves. Whether it is good or bad energy is up to what we do and the things we choose not to do.
I also think we can change our Karma....based on the next choices we make....to change our energy.
I believe karma can be built through our thoughts and actions.
kharma is most likly a force others creat because of what they think of you
but what if our actions cant be controled.. if everything happens from the moment you start to end..?
I think karma is built or created based on our actions and how we live our lives, I think we have the ability to change our Karma as we have the ability to control what our futures may have in store for us, depending on whether we stay on the same path we are on now (the same routine) or doing new things. I think it's based on our actions (Like I said before) and it is our actions that builds positive and negative karma, if we lead good lives and try to help people, and try to keep ourselves from doing bad things maybe we can build a more positive karma. If we do bad things...umm like stealing from someone then that's building bad karma, but I believe everyone has a chance to change their karma if they are willing to change for the better...or for the worse, it just depends on the person.
i do not personally believe in karma.. karma is for people who can be found guilty for things they do
Who is keeping score I ask
is their an umpire in this?
a great force to be two things at once
yet others think it two
how much karma do you have coming?
So what of ethics?
if one treats enough people
in a hostile manner
then they begin to repel others
a natural thing physical
people read out the creepy loner
so what becomes of him
well he takes over where people
he interacted with
a heavier stress load
he is flush out of assistance
he is served what he created
call it karma
but if I was a person he screwed
I would like a share as well
i think its the things we do, the way we treat others, the sort of life we lead, how positive we are about the things that happen to us, or how negative.
Karma - Not so sure, but I came accross a man that had smashed his motorcycle into the back of a large Dorrango. Blood everywhere and his motorcycle was on top of him.
Two large males got one look at all of the blood and turned away. I yelled at them to come and lift the bike off of him and they just kept walking.
I told another female - who turned out to be an occupational therapist to grap the handlebars and keep the front tire straight. Before I even realized it, I had reached down and grabbed the back of the motorcycle and pulled it off of him and upright.
I yelled to someone else and they got the kickstand down.
So, I ask was it Karma that I happened to come along? Was it Karma that I was there and not at my appointment? I have no answers - only more questions
You have a honed instinct that was a saving force in the life of a fellow human being you shared in that persons fight for survival. His reflexion apon you at that moment encouraged you, the way that man was treated by those losers in that moment stoked your inner fire.. a force you tapped into and if you believe that it is karma then to you it is very real.
If you choose to believe in the concept of "karma", then it would be a state of mind. Good vs evil would be the facet of such universal jest to say the least.
I believe karma is built throughout our lives. I think it is a collective energy we build while making choices day by day. I think even the smallest choice of the day could effect it some.
I believe we can change it if we work hard enough at it. But, personally, I think it would be really hard to do.
If you did horrible things all your life and you're about mid-life, I think it would be like piecing together a shattered crystal glass. It's not impossible. But find all the right choices and have the patience and determination, and you'll get it.
i always thought it was like good or bad deeds we do attracting likewise
It's in our actions and reactions. I saw karma work firsthand. My dad's boss was a real monster of a person, would always threaten to fire his staff, never was nice to anyone, you know the kind of guy you just really can't stand. He would always make fun of people in wheelchairs. My dad quit as soon as he found another job.
Well, one day, he had a flat in the rain and was changing it on a bridge. He slipped off the bridge and fell, ending up paralized in a wheelchair.
yes I did always think that karma is a sense of action ........ how you treat people how you behave so on and so ........... so be nice
Well, I personally have always believe in karma. What goes around, comes around. I don't think you can really "build" up karma. It's like... it reacts immediately. I hope that makes sense...
Karmas like a credit card you don’t have to pay back any time soon
I think that it basically what we say how we act and soemtimes or especially what we think that help us with karma
I feel you build karma through everything you do and every faucet of your life , whether it be actions, or anything you may do .
I am a firm believer in Karma as well and I think it is within Us and our Lives...I think by Our actions, Karma is what We make it...Good or Bad, everything has a way of working out towards what ever path We take
I'd have to say it's by the actions you do.
Good karma for good deeds. Bad for bad.
Truly, I believe we get what we give in life. And while many do not believe in the 3 fold law. I still hold some truth and faith in it. Logically ,it just seems right to me anyways. If all one does or gives is evil and hate...what would one expect to get back. Goodness and light..mmm I don't think so. The universe in all it's complexity, must keep track of or have some scale to ballance such things.
In the Wiccan faith....
every action you do, comes back 3 fold....
You do something good... good comes back to you...
you do something bad.... bad comes back and bites you on the ass.
it's why the Wiccan code is harm none....
Like the post above mine. The wiccan code. I too believe karma is a energy placed out into the world, you do good and it will come back to you. You do bad and it will come back to you 3 fold. I however am not a wiccan I do respect their ways. I just feel the same way
i think the law is good for those who need a consionce to keep them from being bad but in the long run we are all individuals and only answer to ourselves in the end unles it's something lawfully illegal then thats a whole nother story lol but basically i believe we all make choices and those choices create our future.
karma comes back to you no matter what you do but you pick if it good karma bad or in between that comes back at you its all on you and what you did that its comeing back to you for!!!
i believe it's all of the above. Positive thinking/attitude, attracts positive energy. negative attracts negative.
I also believe that whatever you send out, eventually comes back around. if you are a cruel. hateful person, then that is what you will get in return. Treat others as you would like to be treated. =)
well i think you build it by the deeds you do good and bad
well let me see mmm good one lol.
i think you build karma by your actions, addatud twords other man kind or anamals.
if you are mean to others people shall be mean back.
if you are kind then you shall recive kindness back.
the best thing i can say is if you want good karma then be kind to all.
Is there some kind of formula to "karma", or is this just a kid's tale to keep the chaos at bay?
A formula ? Very possibly.
If there is one I doubt very much if anyone could fathom it, being that our thoughts about pretty well everything spiritual are constrained by our dimensional understanding.
Creating our karma, some positive, some negative, shades within shades. Our actions mainly define our karma, at times our innaction. We will not be made saints for thinking we are so good, neither will we be conmdemned through eternity for thinking we are so bad. Is is our actions that determine our karma, and in the case of not helping someone when we could have then it is our lack of action that determines it.
I believe that karma comes back to us because of the things we do or say or the way we act. It could be good or bad. that is my belief.
I personally do believe in Karma and I feel it is built for good or bad life after life. I also believe that thru multiple incarnations one has the free will to undo bad karmic debts thru tru forgiveness as one example. And also to build good Karma which will carry over to the next life.
Here is an explanation that I had found on wikipedia...here is the link to it if you are interested in finding out more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karma_%28Buddhism%29
The Buddha explains what having conviction in karma means:
First, karma really is happening -- it is not an illusion.
Second, you really are responsible for your actions. There is no outside force like the stars or some good or evil being acting through you. When you are conscious, you are the one who decides what happens.
Third, your actions have results -- you are not just writing on the water -- and those results can be good or bad depending on the quality of the intention behind the act.
I personally believe in Karma as I have seen how actions create re-actions...A good example is when I got divorced from my first husband...he got custody of the kids and then was a total jerk...most of the time I didn't get to see them as I should have and he would tell the kids horrible things to me...well it backfired on him and when they got old enough they decided to come and live with me...he couldn't figure out why...but to me that was Karma. I honestly believe that what you put out in the world will come back to you whether it be in this life or the next.
Karma typically does reflect your actions, and your ability to be in tune with your surroundings. It is the same as saying what goes around comes around. If you fill your life with cruel acts you will pay for it in the end, or so it is beleived. Many cultures feel this way, from things like heaven, to the weighing of the heart, ect.
Personally, I feel that karma comes from the actions or deeds that we do during our life span. I thoroghly(sp) agree with what Hawk and Nocturnis said. Good for good and bad for bad.
Remember "do unto others" and you know the rest. Good advice, unless you're homicidal.
What of surplus Karma?
Karma when it comes around positive or negative it comes around.
So can karma be avoided?well sort of maybe...Deflected,or passed up.
Passed up? Ok you got a good month going you helped out when you could ,did things right in your manner. So
you have something good coming back. Now lets say you just let the reward pass you by.Where does it go?I feel and have witnessed karma rewards passed up effect other people in the lives of those who shun reward.
Going instead to their friends and families improving and enriching the lives of those around them.Sort of like karma saying "Oh yea well if you don't want it directly I can get it to you indirectly."
The bad for last....
When negative karma comes around for you the due return. If we avoid this karma by deflection,or stepping sideways ,sadly the same effect happens ,the friends and family get it.Like a drug addict during a weak moment goes to get dope and runs into a dealer he disrespected and a friend along for the ride ends getting shot .Extreme case scenario.
Karma served doesn't always hit the plate like we expect it to.
Dabbler-
I think thats just really... really.. bad luck. I don't think that has anything to do with karma, more with fate. But then again, I don't know everything, so I could be completely wrong here.
I would agree with you, I once held stock in Karma, but it got so that peoples definition, of something so metaphysical became to easily grasped for my acceptance.. almost to a dictated manner, like they craft gods they craft forces..
It does seem to be a problem that the meaning of a word, object, or gesture gets warped into something other than what it once was, or has meanings placed on it that were not originally there. It was always a problem though, people don't take time to be absolutely sure they know what it means, and pass the false information on to another.
Someone may sidestep karma in this life thru avoidance....but the same situation will arise untill we learn our lessons .... it will keep repeating in life after life till we grasp that lesson. This may indeed be my most "far out" belief but I hold true to it.
I have shared my good Karma by shareing my good fortune with family and friends...but that too os linked to my karma with thembecause they helped me in a former life.
And yes, I know not many will agree with my beliefs, but I do not believe to seek approval nor to seek anything but self expression.
I don't think we build it on our own only even the people that surround us, even past relatives and friends.
I also believe that thought, good and bad come into all of our head with out our control. Does that play a part? I really don't know. i think people just need to try and be the best person they can be. If there is love in your heart, I think that is all that matters. =)
Karma is in everything we say, do, and think. A mere thought can create bad or good Karma. It happens over time, but it can take years to return to you. This is because karma is energy and it rebounds from the edge of the universe and comes back to you stronger than you sent it out. Like a giant vibration.
Actions speak for everything, even if you have evil thoughts its what you do that describes who you are and what type of Karma you will receive. Do good deeds when ever you can even if it is as simple as opening a door for a passing person.
i believe that karma is more of a do unto others as they would do unto you thing..
We "build up" Karma by what we do.
I don't really believe in it tho.
-Juggalette givin MMFWCL
Yes Im like everyone else and believe that we build our own Karma you get what you give out even if personally I dont believe in it
Karma is and action somehting that happens , if you do something bad is gonna come back at you.
I believe karma is a reaction to our action.
"what goes around, comes around".
I also believe you can change or "build" your karma by changing your attitude towards life and people you come in contact with.
I've always been a firm believer in "karma"...
The western version is actually really different from the original buddhist beliefs, but I feel that it still holds the same point and is well worth the belief.
The concept of karma is easy to follow.
If you do bad things, than you get bad karma, and same things would happen in return, until you learn that those things shouldnt be done.
If you do good things, or do nothing, but doing nothing negative, or not thinking any negative thoughts, than you accumulate good karma, and safety, to pass further with your life here, and you reach faster that what comes after life.
I like the idea of "surplus karma" Dabbler brought up. Let's say you are a wonderful charity filled individual who has lived an exemplarity life. How does one million good deeds differ than say 100,000 over a lifespan?
The concepts of getting what you put out into the world is a great moral theory to ensure people behave in accordance with today’s view points of right and wrong. But over time morals and ethics for human behavior have changed- does that also indicate that earning or collecting karma is significantly different in today than it was during the Enlightenment or the height of Greek civilization?
Thesavageant -
What exactly do you mean when you ask "is there a formula to karma"?
Do you mean the whole, if you do good deeds good things will happen to you and if you do bad deeds negative things will happen to you?
Dabbler -
I like the idea of surplus karma as well, maybe not when referring to negative karma because then it spills over to people who may have not deserved it.
Meeper -
I agree, the morals and ethics for human behavior have changed, but does karma really change? It's still if you do good things, good things happen, and if you do bad things, bad things will happen. I don't really think karam changes, but how we view certain things may change.
I do not feel that it changes how we have Karma, yet over the centuries I do agree we view things differently in this day and age. if you ask me we are MORE FORGIVING than we were back then .. look at all our prisons ...
I feel Karma is just that we balance out as I look at it.. we get what we give or take.. ya know, so the karma is not building in my opinion it is already there from time we are born.. so who knows for sure. Just an opinion is all...
I don't think you can build karma --- it's how other people feel when their around you .
If our perceived notion of good and bad deeds changes, does that mean what once earned you good karma now earns you bad karma or vice versa? Or does karma exist outside of our own concepts- meaning that even though we think we are living morally and ethically, we might not be racking up the karma surpluses because our notion of right and wrong are relative to our current society.
I am sorry I do not understand when you said : it is how people feel around you?.. Well ok I think I do is it like when can feel uncomfortable or comfortable around a person.. like that? :) just trying to learn is all..
Thats a good point Meeper. What if our own individual perception of what is right or wrong is so far off base, I mean who decides ultimately what that is? Your God? What if you don't have one?
I have my own set of morals that I go by and can only hope that they are the right ones. I do believe in karma, what goes around comes around.
Regardless of one's own religious positions, if you believe in karma- there is the idea that there is a positive or negative reaction to your own choices in life. We cannot accurately predict though how to build good karma versus bad if it is all speculation.
But perhaps the principle of karma is nothing more than a heightened awareness of your life and your deeds. If you are scrupulous about ethical behavior, karma or not your self-portrait will be enhanced by your viewpoints.
in my eyes Karma is built up over the years by the deeds you have done. and the people you have helped out. if you do good things good things shall happen to you. if bad things are cast out upon the world bad things shall happen to you. its just the way it works. i am a firm believer in such that if i do good things and help people that good things and good events shall happen in my life. if i do bad things in life i shall receive bad things and happenings back in return in my life.
I believe in the same religion regarding karma as Abraham Lincoln...when he was asked what religion he believed in he replied : "When I do good I feel good, when I do bad I feel bad...THAT is my religion."
karma's directly linked to your actions so the more stupid things you do and the "meaner" you are to people the more bad karma you build, and vice versa.
Ahh but is it so easy Alix ?
Motive is all.
Does a well meaning person who causes hurt get the same back ?
Perception is all well and good, but motive cannot be ignored.
Karma will reward you for your good actions and punish you for your ill ones. It will even punish you for your attempts to repeat previous bad acts, I have seen it happen. Wishing harm to someone, harming someone, gossip and slander all add up.... you might get what you have come right away, but it builds and it's going to sting!
I do believe that some innocent mistakes are forgivable, small misdoings might go unavenged, but in the long run.... if you plan to have Karma be good to you, you damn well better be good to everyone and everything!
You are right Sinora, it is all about a motive.
If one is doing things out of a bad motive, than it means getting bad karma, beacuse bad motivation means bad thoughts, bad deeds, bad interaction with your environment, earning you bad karma.
If one is doing things out of a good motive which is in balance, than we can say that one is doing only good things.
exmpl; If there is a malicious dictator wich is misguiding the nation, in many bad ways, making them conduct them selves in those bad ways which they are not aware of them selves to be bad, but that it is good, than it will not earn one the bad karma if one decides to assassinate the dictator-devil in the desire of purification of the system-universal law, beacuse one is exterminating evil wich is clouding the minds of the people and disrespecting the universal law the way it was meant to be in the first place, and that is a good reason to such motivation-act, which is in reality a heroic act of purification, restoration of the holy balance which is, wich is putting one in the position of accumulating good karma.
If the motive is right, and we know what a good motive means, than there is not worries, beacuse right motive means doing good things.
i think karma is in all that we do, good karma is from our good actions and good things we do in life, and bad karma is when we do bad stuff.
i'm a strong believer in karma and i think it is to do with our actions that we take in life, if you do something good it will get returned to us and the same if we do something bad
I have been reading the posts here and some are wondering if thoughts that creep into our minds affects our Karma...I don't believe that it does as it is based upon our actions rather than thoughts.
As far as perception of good and bad well we all know right from wrong. And some have mentioned good deeds that may inadvertently hurt someone...I think as long as it was done with good intentions and not malicious then it will not come back to them in a bad way.
I believe in Karma... That is why i allways try to do Good things and avoid doing Bad things. So Karma does'nt bite me in the Ass. :)
As I understand it, your thoughts, words, AND actions affect your karma.
Thoughts are most usually capable of being brought into words, and thoughts are things. So simply fashion yourself some bricks, and find yourself with some mortar(neural axons, perhaps?).
It is all placebo, just do what you think is right.
seems like everybody wants to limit Karma to good and bad, creating karma to their specific idealogy, an extraction from all the other faiths practice. So building it? Yea people make a god the same way.
Karma is the concept in Indian Religions and some Pagan religions that actions and deeds throughout their livespast, present and future experiences. It basically shows cause and effect.
I hope this was helpful.
Taking in the consideration of Motive... Karma is like what goes around comes around. I really do believe that this is true. I've known a few arrogant bastards in my day that has had their negativity return to them.
i guess this all comes down to meta-ethics..
what is good?
how do we define an action as good? are there criteria?
the same applies for bad.
a "good" knife could be one that is sharp. is that knife still "good" if it is then used to stab someone?
if anyone can say whether an action is intrinsically good or bad, i would be very interested...
I don't think it is just the actions that we take but also the thoughts behind those action. If you help a women into an apartment with a bunch of bags just to get a change to get her number it means less then to due it just to help her out. I believe that your motive have to be pure of heart and you can not just do things because you believe that will get you something in return.
the concept of being selfless has long ago been forgotten really, although it does make me happy to see a few lovely people still keeping it alive today ^_^
Karma is the basic idea of what goes around, comes around. It plays a big part in reincarnation in Hinduism. Basically, if you are a good person and live a good life, your next reincarnation will be better. If you live a bad life and generate bad karma, your next reincarnation will be worse than your current one. Its kind of like a giant game of chutes and ladders. If you do bad deeds and generate bad karma, you move down the ladder and your next life may be something like a slug or something. I always thought it was a neat concept that even if a person's bad karma doesn't get them in this life, it affects them in the next.
Haha, yea i like that... Mass-murderer becomes a slug, lol!
It makes you think though doesn't it.. Why people would do such bad things, and how they could even bare to live with themselves, let alone do more bad things.
This concept brings into question all of humankind as a harsh and brutal species.
With every action.... comes the appropiate Kharma....
If you help someone..... you will earn Good kharma...
If you harm someone.... Bad kharma will bite you on the ass.
and the more Kharma you accumulate.... the more it will affect you.....
speaking of karma. my mate's best friend... i hate him with a passion. he always talks shit about me and the bastard doesn't even know me. he calls me a whore and that i'm no good for him.
4th of july he meets up with my mate and my mom plastered out of his mind, saying that he got his slutty lying girlfriend of a month pregnant and that she's keeping the kid. i hate this girl because she lied saying my best fried angel raped her, and got him almost killed by her ex. now her and my mates best friend are trying to keep it secret. she told angel that she was pregnant, but told her baby's daddy that somebody had told him. so he thinks that it was me. so he's calling me a liar to my boyfriend, and i told him that i didn't speek a word. he's trying to break us up. his girl is bulemic and is keeping the child, while she talks behind his back saying that she hates him and that they're not dating.
you know what? that asshole deserves was he gets.
You build karma just by living life. The more good you do the more good karma you get. Now bad karma is something else every bad thing you do comes back at you three fold so think before you do something.
can you store up karma? like if you do a log of good stuff, or bad stuff, can that karma keep building and building and building so that you have too much of it?
XTCraver, yes he does. and he's setting himself up big time with all the stuff he's doing. it'll come back to him, don't worry.
I belive if you do good things and help ppl you will build good karma
I also belive if you do bad things and do bad to ppl and yourself you will build bad karma
How does one build karma?
No one person can build nor hold Karma back, it comes when it wants to and takes its pound of flesh as they say when IT feels the need to do it.
Good karma, bad karma, or anything in between?
There can more then just good karma and just bad, you can have great karma, or better yet wonderful luck. Then you can have the worst karma you have ever seen, also none as they worst luck ever.
Is it in the things we do? The things we think about?
Our actions, or the lack of?
You can make the karma come sooner if you have the training or you don't mean to, hate, anger, love, hope, sorrow, its all tired to the inner part of you that calls to something more. You may get angry with someone and there karma might come sooner then planed but you will also pay as well, or you might love someone so much there life is great, but not with out a price to be paid.
Not everything in life is for free.
Good Karma is built on good deeds, thoughts, and actions.. Bad Karma is built on bad deeds, thoughts, and actions..
