So I was just wondering, do they really work?

Has anyone ever used one?

I've always wanted to try one, but I'm afraid of what it might say!

I want to know experiences!

Well for starters it's Ouija. And pronounced weegee. Some say they do, and some say they don't. Also known as witch boards. They are supposedly a source of communication with the dead. They date back too 300 BC China, where they originated. And were originally called "fuji boards." Search it on wikipedia

A bit of constructive critisism, at least research a topic and the spelling of it before starting at thread...Just to keep the interest of the audience. Then ask about their experiences if at all contributable.

I am assuming you mean Ouija boards? I have used them on many occasions but I was working with a metaphysical group and I have used it as well with my family. Most people have seen too many movies as it is just a tool, like using pndulums and other things. Even automatic writing could be dangerous.

You should never do it alone. You should always cleanse the board and put up shielding. It's not a game.

I have used it to talk to various spirits. I have used it with a medium where we had to have a transcriber sitting by us taking down all the letters the planchette was moving so quickly. Then we had to break down the words. Generally you are suppose to use it with another person and the board is suppose to actually be touching and not on a table or floor. Usually it is used on the knees but I have used it on tables and such but that isn't the real way I have learned it is suppose to be used but never use it alone. Just like anything else you can create a pathway some refer to as an open vessel. This gives a spirit a way to enter if you don't protect yourself just as one would from psychic attack. For me I don't believe in demons as portrayed but I do believe there can be nasty entities. Those that are pranksters and will lie. Beyond that its only stories that have been told and superstition in my opinion but not everyone believes that . I am not saying people haven't had bad experiences because by many ways of divination you can have bad experiences.

I have felt that actually the seance is more volatile because there even with a medium if you link...anyone is open to spirit communication and I have witnessed that. Its not quite the same as you see it in movies.

yes they do work, the thing is they open 2 doors an donly one you can close, plus they allow all demonic spirutal being to enter at will and freely.

So best option: do NOT use it.

If you do, the consequences are not the kind you will like, at first maybe but in the end not at all. I can promise you that, speaking by experience.

I've tried it and all it is is one person manipulating the pointer to try to freak the other person out.

I'm sure someone may have used one and communicated with someone or something, but not on the parker brothers version.

There are some people they won't work for. I would say why I think they don't work but would rather not. I disagree that they are anymore harmful than using tarot cards. It is just that people don't think of it in that way. But then I don't believe in Demons but I believe in Djinn.

I have a very expensive hand made oujia board from a man in California. I bought it because I liked the look of it. I have yet to use it since I can't find anyone to use it with me. And I didn't think it would work if I used it alone. But, I may get it out sometime & try it.

I used them a lot in my younger days, but I wouldn't suggest it, weird things start to happen. I'm not sure why, perhaps it was the way we were using it, but I think it opens a door way for evil spirits to enter.

Exactly. An Ouija board, should be considered as a key which opens "other" doors. The user, should take the necessary steps to ensure they are using this conduit responsibly. It is not a toy. Any individual with little to no experience can use this and get results. It just doesnt mean you should..

And I thought I would come back and tell you about a time I used one.

We were in a cemetery. Someone pissed the spirits off or something. The eye piece flew off. We saw the exact area that it landed. When we went over there it was gone. It came up and after I found it, it caused chaos.

I`m not denying that it is possible that they work but it is my belief that it is actually the people pushing the glass around or whatever they are using. In their anticication or fear, they push the glass and don`t realise it. It`s the same as a pendulum. Concentrate on it hard enough and it will eventually start to move. I`ve tried it loads of times and not once, has it genuinely worked.

Just as it can be used for light entertainment, so too can it be used wrongly by an individual who has suppressed anger or other issues so that the messages that arise from using the board can be seen as harmful to one or more of the users.

The Ouija board is neither Evil, nor is it strictly Good; it all depends on those that use it. If you want to use the Ouija board, follow the guidelines that come with it.

I have indeed used one before I even owned one a year back but I left in at my old place.

I believe it all depends on the person an the faith put into the board that makes it work. I have known people to have tried an they weren't able to. Some say they just don't have the ability or they arn't right for the Oujia.

First few times I tried mine nothing happened. I tried it in different areas of the house, or in a whole other location an got nothing. Then one day a few friends of mine an I decided to try it out one last time. We were able to get something but I am to this day not sure what it was or it could have been nothing for all I know. Again I believe that it all depends on the person an how serious they are about it.

I've used the board with my Mother many years ago. We were able to contact a woman who had been dead for about 50 years. She was in my Mom's dreams constantly. My Mom had bought this trunk at a yard sale. This woman had owned the trunk and wanted it back. This was the reason she was haunting my Mother. She told us to give it away so her spirit can be free of our house. My Mother had that trunk for a very long time!

XTCRaver - it's spelt Ouija. The name comes from Oui and Ja - the french and german words for 'yes'.

Apparently my aunt used one of these years ago when her and my mother were living at home, and soon after using it poltergeist activity started up in the house. They stuck it for a while, then cracked and got rid of it. Soon as they did, the activity stopped.

I don't think Ouija boards themselves are evil, but if they've been used in ther past for contacting malevolent spirits it can leave a residue which can be dormant until used again. So in that respect, I would say they are doors which should really stay closed.

But some boards are merely decorative and have no occult value at all. We had one like that, but we got rid of it because it was a crap design :-)

If you are afraid then leave well enough alone.

As others have said, there are pranksters in the world of Spirit and if your fear overcomes your good sense then you may be subject to a backlash.

When I experimented with it years ago, it was just that, an experiment, I wanted to know if such a thing was possible.

There were just two of us, and neither of us moved it, but move it did.

We were not afraid, but at the same time once done I felt no need to go back to it.

i have heard you are not supposed to burn a ouija board because it closes the gate (one way) to the spirit realm....i however do not really have an opinion either way on the subject because i dont see how it could work.....i would be interested to know the origins and if it has evolved from something else through time to the modern day ouija board.

They are a grand novelty with a grand physical/mental phenomena, they have built up quite a yarn around a parlor ice breaker though. If what most claim about the boards is indeed true, we should be awash in spirits.

Have I used them? Yes as ice breakers, they really bring a group together, works well with mixing two groups as well. I am not convinced, though I was once lead to believe like others still lead others to believe, that it is some occult conductor. The following is a link to a site that I found breaks it down well, along with other parlor games that have been used to create the appearance of occult activity.

Pardon me i put the wrong link here is a direct one..

Along with the first paragraphs for those who would like to read it here.

http://www.prairieghosts.com/ouija.html

HISTORY OF THE OUIJA BOARD
While automatic writing was being embraced by mediums, those who satisfied their curiosity about the spirit world in the "home circles" were also searching for a more efficient way to reach the other side than by rapping on tables.

In 1853, a French Spiritualist named M. Planchette (according the to the stories anyway -- it should be noted that "planchette" in French translates to "little plank", making this story a little dubious) invented a device that could do much more than tap on the table. The “planchette” was a small, heart-shaped table with pencils attached to its legs. Those who used it claimed that it operated by spirit force and ghosts were able to write out messages from beyond. The invention was often used by the mediums as a more elaborate form of automatic writing, but it really did not hold wide appeal for the general public.

However, a short time later, another invention would come along that could be used by everyone. No experience was required and no real psychic skills were needed. This new device would revolutionize the Spiritualist movement and have an impact that still resounds today. The Ouija board was born.

I will tell you this, an its my opinion. I have one and it works for me, some ppl will say they work and some will say they dont. But I know for a fact that they do, I use mine often and I always have a good experience and learn things. Also I only usually talk to a few ppl, just ppl that I can trust that would not play games with me. I talk to my grandmother for the first time on the board just the other night, and I know it was her because she confirmed it through telling me stories about my childhood that the other person using the board with me did not know. So yes they can work.

I would much rather deal with a senace. If I was to use one I am sure I would burn sage around it & purify it.

Say a protection prayer.

I heard that if you burn it, the witches will scream, you should take it and break it in 4 pieces throw Holy Water on it and bury it. There was another story above me on the burning of them.

There is a musemum that you can send it too. Some are the very 1st made and I believe those would be the better use those those manufactored of today.

When I was young and silly and didn't have any idea what I was getting into I did use a board once.

We used one that had a clear quartz crystal and it did start moving we asked if any one was there it said yes, then suddenly the crystal got hot under our fingers so we quickly removed them, then the crystal split in half and then we had a black out. Even the candles we were using went out.

My friend burned the board after that as it freaked us out badly.

OUIJA BOARD STORIES AND EVENTS
As mentioned already, many people have a fear of and are stigmatized by their using a Ouija Board -- for both good purposes and bad. There seem to be many unanswered questions as to whether or not talking boards are worthwhile channels to the other side or merely sinister board games nut in spite of this, there have been many stories and apocryphal tales that have come along over the years to cement the Ouija's less than savory reputation. Here are a few of them but remember that we make no claims as to the truth of the stories -- the veracity of the tale is up to the reader to decide!

- One of the most mysterious looking buildings in Los Angeles is the famed Bradbury Building. Over the years, a variety of Hollywood film makers have been drawn to it and have shot films like DOA, Blade Runner and Seven here. Legend has it that George Wyman consulted his dead brother using a Ouija Board about it before he built it for Louis Bradbury in 1893. Wyman had little architectural experience at the time and debated on whether or not to take on the monumental task. His brother convinced him, through the board, that the building would make him famous -- and it did.

- Arthur Henry Ward (better known as Sax Rohmer), the author of the famous "Fun Manchu" adventure novels, was also a member of the Golden Dawn and penned a number of occult books as well. According to his own account, he started his lucrative writing career on advice gained through a Ouija board. He asked how to best make a living as a writer and the board spelled out "c-h-i-n-a-m-a-n". The novels that followed brought him fame and fortune and franchise that is still popular today.

- A St. Louis housewife named Pearl Curran stunned the literary world in the early 1900's by channeling a spirit through the Ouija Board and producing thousands of pages and novels and poetry that allegedly came through a spirit named Patience Worth. Click Here to Read the Complete Story

- Starting in 1919, author Stewart Edward White and his wife, Betty, spent 17 years studying Betty's mediumship with a group of entities who called themselves the "Invisibles". She made initial contact with them using a Ouija board and then continued the communications through automatic writing. The White's later produced the Betty Book to chronicle the events in 1937.

- In 1933, Dorothea Turley and her 15 year-old daughter, Mattie, were convicted of the murder their husband and father. On the witness stand, Mattie stated how the Ouija board, which had been directed by her mother, had told her that it was all right to kill her father so that her mother could marry "cowboy". Mattie later killed him with a shotgun. The jury determined that the crime had more to do with insurance money and Dorothea's lover than a Ouija board and Dorothea went to prison and Mattie for reform school, where she stayed until she was 21. Her mother was released on an appeal three years after the original trial.

- In 1972, poet Jane Roberts founded the "channeling" movement when she had a paranormal experience that she described as "feeling her consciousness leave her body". She and her husband began experimenting with a Ouija Board and made contact with a being known as "Seth". The result of this was several popular books that were dictated by Seth himself, including Seth Speaks.

- According to legend (and boy, is this one questionable!) musician Alice Cooper allegedly named his band (and himself?) after the spirit of a 17th century witch with this name that he claimed to have contacted through a Ouija Board. He and his band mates thought the name so cool that they decided it was the perfect moniker for the group -- except for one hold out, who thought the name was stupid. It should be noted that earlier names of the band had been the Earwigs, the Spiders and Nazz, so perhaps "Alice Copper" was an improvement. Regardless, this was the first story of the band name's origin and there have been others since then. It's likely that they don't even remember what really happened!

- In 1990 (or 1991) several students allegedly decided to try out a Ouija Board at a small cemetery on the campus of Benedictine University in Chicago. One of the young men who participated in the session allegedly became “possessed”. He started screaming and howling uncontrollably and his companions were unable to calm him down or to keep him from kicking, biting and flailing about. Campus police were said to have assisted in getting the young man back to his room and he ended up being taken to an area hospital, where he was sedated and treated. The story of the incident was told, re-told and embellished around campus over the course of the next few days and interesting elements began to be added to the tale. One of the most popular was that the boy was taken to Benedictine Hall and locked in a room all night, in hopes that he might tire himself out. When the door was unlocked, he was sitting quietly in a chair and looking out a window that was covered with swarming flies! Unfortunately, the real story was not so chilling or exciting. According to reliable sources, the boy simply freaked himself out during the Ouija session. The spooky setting and the excitable nature of the boy combined for a disaster when one of his friends decided to play a prank and make everyone think the ghost was close by. The young man became hysterical and the events that followed were a result of his own overactive imagination.

Rather than the story of the “possessed” boy being a cautionary tale, Ouija boards became even more popular on campus in the weeks that followed. Some credited the boards with terrible powers, including one girl who blamed her séance for a mysterious fire that started in her room on Neuzil Hall. She had left her Ouija board sitting on her sofa when she went to dinner but was called back to her room when the sofa somehow went up in flames. After the fire was put out, no trace could be found of the Ouija Board!

Personally you can get connected with a wrong spirit and they can cause you harm and haunt you the rest of your life. You open your spirit up to that stuff when you do it so honestly I would never do it again. I seen it done and was there asked one question and then it moved not sharing what the question was, but I would never do it again.

i have used a Ouija board only once. it was not something i wish to speak of. but lets just say it was not a good one.

i have been told by many people that, one you never used one alone as the spirit or ghost can enter your body and harm you. , two you are never under any sort of drug or liquor as this can weaken your mind ability to fight, never use it if even one person thinks it just a toy.

I do not like the idea of ouija/spirit boards at all. Whether it is a powerful psychological effect or actually a spirit for real that is communicating with you, it can really frighten people. I have known people completely change in personality after experiences with these boards. Personally, I will not be in a place in which one is being used, and have actually excused myself and left when one has been brought out at friends homes before now. I would advise caution to anyone who might want to try them.

Ouija boards work same as any ritual performed a group.
All sorts of events happen and have been documented.
From someone pushing the pointer to full on possession.

I think the secrets behind the board is a dormant or someone who get more than normal paranormal activity in there life’s.

Just as a ghost was made by a group of paranormal experts
called Philip

Same principle can apply to your gathering. One or more people have paranormal abilities, sometimes with out knowing.
You may accuse them of moving the pointer and they will swear they didn’t … and they didn’t.

Kept in the context of a social ice breaker.. that is why it is sold in the game section of toy stores (unless one wants to pay outrageous prices for a real spiffy one). Being careful at the gathering to avoid stirring the spastics in the group.. or those with social tensions. All things that can be triggered by anything that appears to uncover their little social guarded secrets.

i think Mollidew is right this is not a game. i'm to affraid of this tool to using it. by the way i think it'S better to have some pshychic talent before use this tool. my friend's father have a lot of psychic talent and he use it sometime. and it'S work all the time i think this would help. so if you have any premonition or gift of clairevoyance and you really want to have any answer about clear uestion.you wont have any problem to use it. but don't forget to sent back the spirits you call. cause you'll be took with haunted spirits

I think the game aspect is akin to truth or tale.. those that have social secrets stand the chance of being called out to sit at the board, the acting out (possessed) is a way to create an out.

They can, but a word of warning, be careful when you do use them, because they are one doorway between the worlds of the Living and the Dead. But yes, they generally do work, but yea, not always. Have faith, and try not to beckon forth the wrong kind of spirt, and youll be fine!

I do not like Ouija boards; I believe they are a tool that is used to bring spirits back into this realm even when they don't necessarily want to. I say this because I know people who have used Ouija boards and afterwards they had a lot of negative energy in their homes for a while, when that has never previously happened to them before.

I once released a spirit who was actually pretty well-behaved; I actually came to think of him as one of my buddies and after a while, even my mom would ask me how he was doing or if he was playing tricks on me again lol. After a couple of years though I realized it was time to send him back with his family, so I created an area of white light so he could cross over again. Every now and then I feel him "check up" on me, but his presence is not as prominent as it used to be.

My only advice when it comes to Ouija boards is BE CAREFUL! You never know what may come forth.

Me and my friend have, one night, made a ritual for open a door where ancients demons live. We take it from a book reliated to the necronomicon...a commercial version. Inside we have find ritual for invocating powerfull demon like Chtulhu or Nug-Shuggat (wrong spelling).

I don't think we will try again. The experience was horrible. For the ouija board, I have made one with my hands ans I have put some ''spiritual energy'' in the heart of the board. Really usefull.

I think the object of the board game is to see who can make-up the most outrageous haunted board story.. I have pressed people for details of their claimed observation and every time there are inconcistancies in stories. So the motive of those that claim such things is usually because they want to entertain through astonishing expectations. Mixed with the gossip potential in any social group being exposed in a sitting with others having a third party device to hide their hinting behind.

I have used on and the results i recieves were scary. But i must caution you on destroying the ouija board. Ouija boards open a portal so the spirits can communicate. By destroying the board you are not closing the portal but simply taking away the physical oracle in which the spirits intentions are communicated.

I have used them for years and they work. How, is a matter of opinion. Some say it's our higher self, and some say it's ghosts. I have communicated with the ghosts using them, so I know they work, and I don't move the planchette.

And it's proper pronounciation is "wee-ja", but most call it "wee-g". Someone mentioned that earlier.

A ouija board (correctly pronounced "wee-jah" /wiʤə/ although often pronounced "wee-gee" /wiʤi/ ) is any flat surface printed with letters, numbers, and other symbols, to which a planchette or movable indicator points, supposedly in answer to questions from people at a séance. The fingers of the participants are placed on the planchette that then moves about the board to spell out messages. Ouija is a trademark for a talking board currently sold by Parker Brothers.[1] While the word is not considered a genericized trademark, it has become a trademark that is often used generically to refer to any talking board. In popular culture these boards are considered to be a spiritual gateway used to contact the dead; however, the only evidence for this is the various accounts of users.

The first historical mention of something resembling a Ouija board is found in China around 1200 B.C., a divination method known as fuji 扶乩 "planchette writing".[citation needed] Other sources claim that according to a French historical account of the philosopher Pythagoras, in 540 B.C. his sect would conduct séances at "a mystic table, moving on wheels, moved towards signs, which the philosopher and his pupil, Philolaus, interpreted to the audience as being revelations supposedly from an unseen world."[2] However, other sources call both claims into dispute, claiming that fuji is spirit writing, not the use of a spirit board, and that there is no record of Pythagoras or his students actually having used this method of achieving oracles or divinations.[3] In addition, the claim of ancient Greek use is called into doubt by questions of historical accuracy, as Philolaus was never the pupil of Pythagoras, and indeed was born roughly twenty-five years after Pythagoras's death. The first undisputed use of the talking boards came with the Modern Spiritualist Movement in The United States in the mid-19th century. Methods of divination at that time used various ways to spell out messages, including swinging a pendulum over a plate that had letters around the edge or using an entire table to indicate letters drawn on the floor. Often used was a small wooden tablet supported on casters. This tablet, called a planchette, was affixed with a pencil that would write out messages in a fashion similar to automatic writing. These methods may predate modern Spiritualism.

During the late 1800s, planchettes were widely sold as a novelty. The businessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard had the idea to patent a planchette sold with a board on which the alphabet was printed. The patentees filed on May 28, 1890 for patent protection and thus had invented the first Ouija board. Issue date on the patent was February 10, 1891. They received U.S. Patent 446,054 . Bond was an attorney and was an inventor of other objects in addition to this device. An employee of Kennard, William Fuld took over the talking board production and in 1901, he started production of his own boards under the name "Ouija".[3] The Fuld name would become synonymous with the Ouija board, as Fuld reinvented its history, claiming that he himself had invented it. Countless talking boards from Fuld's competitors flooded the market and all these boards enjoyed a heyday from the 1920s through the 1960s. Fuld sued many companies over the "Ouija" name and concept right up until his death in 1927. In 1966, Fuld's estate sold the entire business to Parker Brothers, who continues to hold all trademarks and patents. About 10 brands of talking boards are sold today under various names.

I have used one, and I don't think it really worked. I did it with a group of friends and well you can never tell if someone is just moving it around rather than a spirit. But then again I wouldn't dream of trying to do one alone. I've heard to many stories of unfortunates who did do one alone only to suffer afterwards be it with mental illness of physical pain.

Personally I wouldn't use one after hearing from friends what happened afterwards, such as they felt like they were constasntly being followed wherever they went, stuff started happening in their houses such as lights turning on/off, doors opening then slamming shut and hearing footsteps on the stairs in the middle of the night. They ended up calling in a medium to cleanse the place.

If you REALLY want to try the board out, whatever you do, have someone there with experience and knows what they are doing plus of course get protection. The links allrready provided should give you all the relevant info.

Well I strongly believe in them and I myself would not ever use one again since I was 17 years old.

I am Native american Indian and well we were using one one day and ( we were NOT suppose to even have one in the house) when my Mother walked into the Kitchen doorway ( we were at the Table) The Pointer flew across the room and hit her in the chest right where your heart is and she had a scar till the day she passed away which will be 3 years come Aug 27th. OMG! we were scared and in so much trouble.

They open a gate way for spirits and even if you know how to bless and make your surroundings safe, well lets just say your not ever really safe when using one.
My mom started talkin in her native tongue and english Both and pissed as hell.. let me tell ya ya do not want a Squaw (cherrokee blackfoot) pissed at ya !! LOL

Not a laughing matter really, My opinion is do not ever use one.. cause for almost 2 months things happened in the house and then my mom re-blessed it and it all calmed down and stop after about 2 wks of her blessings and a ritual.... I DO NOT RECOMMEND using one at all. Just my opinion...

I certainly believe they work, but I also believe they shouldn't be used by someone who doesn't know what they are doing or how to handle what might channel itself through.

Its an open door and many sorts of spirits (good, bad, neutral) can come through. Its like setting bait for a tiger and getting a dragon instead.

I truely believe in the Ouija board and they powers that they do have for opening a gate to the spirit world. I also feel no matter how experienced you are in the art it is still and can be very dangerous to use... I have seen alot of weird and harmful things happen to people using them LOL so my advice is Do not use them..

Just my 2 cents....

I have worked with them for at least forty years...longer really and not once have I had a problem and we got all kinds of messages. One should know when to stop talking to an entity. Anything that can happen with a board can happen when using pendulums or doing automatic writing...for that matter when doing readings and especially when in trance. Just being in the room with a medium can be dangerous, its the nature of the game but I feel some set themselves up for it going into things without knowing anything. This thing about witchboard and all of that is silly. Most of what people think about them have come out of books. I hear people say bad things all the time. Yes it is a means but so are many things used by people who are into metaphysics and/or the occult. Most is superstition. I cannot count how many times I have been involved in this with or without a medium present, with my children (older) and in various places. Its not the board...its those who are using it.

my advice is stay the heck away from one!

lets just say my then bf at the time and i had one... it open a portal in my bedroom and lets just say a bad spirit almost killed him in my bedroom but he was lucky another spirit which was good helped him out. this is a true story that im not making up. The portal wasnt easy to close at first but we was lucky we found a way to close it tight + for good!

I will never ever buy or go near one of those boards again. as for the board i had i gave it to a friend of mine that does witchcraft and the board never came back to me thank god.

a couple years ago when i had that board i had a spirit fell for me and this spirit wouldnt leave me alone in my dreams and then when i moved into another bf's place the dam spirit tried to get us kicked outta the apt complex by making a loud bang almost every night in the middle of the living room floor ticking off an old woman living under us. so i was lucky then to have my same old friend that knows witchcraft to give me a spell to get rid of that spirit which it worked.

Ok like, I had this wild event happen, I think it started when like we painted a board on the down stairs rumpus room.. it was like 6 ft tall or something... and we like used a stencil.. so we used a sled (a broken sofa striped down) and we all climbed on, well the whole thing is.. and I would like totally not be able to imagine something like this.. let alone make it up. we levitated.. and a light show was at the area under the sofa.. I mean we where like lifted by the metaphysical energy.. so we had to disrupt the field with contact, I think I am possessed to this day..

I find that they are a waste of time and space. they are simply a way to fool the mind into believing you are speaking with a spirit.

well the bottom line is that anything you are not sure you KNOW what it is or how to use it or even practice it (witchcraft, voodoo etc.. even religion.... heck it can harm you , hurt you and confuse you.

I do feel we all should learn all we can of all the things we find of interest and entriguing... just an opinion.

I feel they can and should be used with some one whom "KNOWS" what they are doing.... be safe.
