So evidently there a few companies taking the ashes of cremated people and pets and turning them into diamonds:
http://www.lifegem.com/ for example
What are your thoughts on this? Would it be degrading to be worn as jewelry? Is it lovely to have your ashes remolded into a brilliant stone for your loved ones to cherish? Is it Icky? Would you want this for yourself or your loved ones?
This is the first I have ever heard about this. I think it is weird, but it is something I would give some thought about.
I think it is a good idea. Think about it in a way it is something that would grow with every generation of the family if they were set into ring or a piece of jewellery.
I think it would depend on how the families felt on their deceased ones.
I know several individuals that have taken their departed members and had ash trays or pottery made with them. to me it is a little morbid, but to each its own like those who have been cremated and are in yurns still on the mantles. they donot want to part with them. i fought to have my brothers ashes spread where he loved to camp but his mom refused its been 10 years and now she is realizing to let him go.
My mum wants to be made into a diamond. I actually think it's a lovely idea, to turn a body into a beautiful little thing that a loved one can keep on them or display somewhere. I don't think it's creepy, it's a bit like keeping an urn of ashes, but much nicer. I personally don't want to be a diamond though.
My thought on this is will they let your go? Would the family move on with their lives. So no diamond for me, save they money & use it to help someone.
I can just see some member of the family getting strung out on drugs.. and Eyeing Grandma The Ring for pawn..
I have heard of this, the founder was on Man Cows Show, the process is expensive, but comparable to burial.
And lets not forget the rash of sham Funeral Companies on and off for the last 5 years. This is a considerate thing to do in a Save the future land kind of way.
It sounds nice but I agree with Dabbler. I can't help but think of people trying to pawn their ancestors.....
I would consider it based on a few things, but I would rather them not spend so much money on me after I'm already dead. Unless it's covered by life insurance? lol
Honestly, creepy though this may sound, I believe bodies should be recycled. No reason you can't still have a monument to them, but make the body something useful.
Well I have known about this for quite awhile now and people around the net have been talking about it. It came up when we went for funeral arrangements for my Mother. There was really only one company that did this at the time. I am not aware if any others have opened up. The color depends on the biology of the person they make them from. The funeral director said most he had seen were greenish or pinkish. They don't come out clear looking exactly like diamonds at least not from what I was told and they are highly expensive.
To me I believe if the loved one wishes or don't mind being carried around like that, then I don't see a problem. Its just another way for people to have the feeling of protection or being watched over.
To each his/her own...
Personally I've never been a huge diamond fan in general. My wife and I both prefer colored stones (sapphire, emerald, ruby)
they have colored diamonds as well..you can get these stones in clear, blue, green yellow and red.
This is a little different. I went to the website and read about the stone. It is not something I would want done.
It's definitely not anything i would want done. I like the idea of an all natural burial out in the woods with just a plaque. I have talked to a few that want to sign their bodies over to science, like the body exhibit that's in Chicago. Then again once i am deceased what difference does it make how my body is used? I won't feel it or know about it.
I have heard of this procedure, and personally I would love to take the ashes of my loved ones and have them turned into a diamond that I wear on a chain. This way they will all always be near my heart, and always a part of me no matter where I go in life.

I used to think this was really neat... until I gemology community I am a part of revealed to me this is a hoax. There's a lot to it I can't remember off the top of my head, but I will look to see if I still have the emails.

my understanding is that they heat the ashes in a crucible to release the graphite...then they seed the graphite wuth a diamond crystal under intense heat and pressure.

I'll just post the rest here, which is a LOT to go through... but if you are interested in the subject, it's worth reading about.
I heard about this alittle while back and loved the idea.
I though it was an amazing idea to be able to carry part of a loved one around with you after they have gone.
Personally speaking I would love to have it done for me if someone wanted to. Once your dead your body is of no consequence!! I figure what ever helps the grieving process is fine by me! In college I took a class called death and dying. Crazy I know... But we explored the different things cultures do for burial and body. I don't find it strange at all that this has become something bigger than just putting a body in the ground!
to be turned into a diamond would give the wearer a never ending link to you more than just thoughts an memories, i think its a good idea if the person wants it to happen
You can also get a kit from hobby shops, that let you extract a DNA sample from your loved ones (while alive) it has the whole science kit to extract, and store the sample. I bought one for my friends kid to have he sampled his Nana. Token mementos is a strong draw to people. Any body that exploits another human in times of grief hits a sub level of low ethics.
I think the idea has merit.
I think I'd much rather be cremated and loaded into shotgun ammo.
I could still go hunting with friends.
I'm afraid I'd have to skip on becoming a diamond, but I would like to be made into a piece of coal so that my ex could burn me on the grill during her next cookout...she would essentially be eating me :P
I would go for being cremated, and mixed into clay, or marbled cement.. just a head stone, without buried remains.

Well, there's a use for everything, I guess.... lol
If they have permission to do it then I guess there's no problem. But look at this too though...
Normally, when someone is cremated, there isn't really enough of them left to even give back to the family. Sorry to those of you who may have cremated family members but you really only have a pile of soot and ash that may or may not contain some remnants of your loved ones.........
So, making diamonds of out of dead people doesn't really bother because there really isn't any of the person left to put into it. *shrugs*
I first heard about this a few years ago. I read about it online. I looked into it more recently, as I lost my Mom last year. I would love to have her as a diamond. It was costing a few thousand dollars, as I recall. It depends on the size of the diamond too. I think it's neat, actually.

That was already posted, I looked at it, and I'm telling you, it's crap.
Too many people cremated in the same oven..... when a body is burned through that thoroughly, there normally isn't anything left. So they're pretty much just giving you a handful of soot from a thousand different bodies that have no actually DNA in them........... It can't really be considered making a gem out of your loved one. I'm sorry..... Try taking a class and actually learning about cremations. You'll find out a lot more and then realize that these assholes are just playing you. They're trying to make you feel better and make money off of your grief.
Theyve been doing this a long time..if Merkl was still alive, you could ask him all about it...and yeh, sure, why not, other other real use would be for fertilizer.
Well I think its a nice concept.. but after reading the emails i think its a hoax but if some wanted to do it by all means do it... my grandma was cremated and she sits on my moms dresser:) there are some family members who refuse to come into our house because of my dead grandma.. i say its not like you can throw water on it and instant grandma..lol i could only imagine if we had made her into a ring..lol
I find the idea interesting - the thought of a small part of myself living on in a gem that could exist long after a generation or better has come and gone.
So - I think the idea is lovely - not the least expensive thing to do but out of distruction - beauty..
Just an idea - but a beautiful one at that
Have heard of this before and found it facinating. The idea that was intrigued once before was the having my ashes turned into a natural coral and placed in the ocean. Basically when its my turn have told my daughter this: Cremate and bury me with a weeping willow. If she wishes to use some to create a diamond or whatever that is her choice as my shell was just that.. a shell. It does not and will not harness my soul any longer. So no matter whats done with the shell I shall always surround her with the light of love.
Yes I do remeber reading about that some where ,
I think it is really fascinating a true heirloom
I would not want to wear my dead family after they been cremated
i think being turned into a dimond is alot better than being put in a small jar
I like the idea, it is said diamonds are forever right? So for me it is like I am living forever :)
I at to be buried in a cemetery in th countryside so that a descendant in many years can come and find me. The idea of being dug up be archaeologists appeals too
This sounds like a fascinating idea and very interesting to say the least. But I think that I would chose not to do it. I mean I like having my family around and they will always be around in my heart after they are gone, so I don't see a need for this at least for my family that is. If my children decide that is what they want to do then so be it.
Well I do know that they cremate more than one body at a time because of the heat index effect and well no one actually has all or if any of their own loved one so do not believe everything you read or hear LOL I know my family do cremations and well we do not have just one whole relative in any of the urns it is a bunch of mixture of several ..
This is not only sick and depraved, but morally wrong on sooooo many levels.
But, maybe you didn't like the family member in question. Wouldn't it be nice to pawn them off? I would have a good chuckle.

Keep in mind real jewelers are debunking this, and you can quite possibly lose your ashes completely along with tons of money- and just get a neat 'idea' in return, is it worth it to lose those ashes?
And you wouldn't be able to pawn it it, it's 'created', just like zircon.
I keep thinking people already liquidate jewlery to handle burial arrangements, this practice is inflated cremation, under pretense, I have found a few more accounts of their alledged practice, with the funeral business under fire for a few shady characters at the time this came about, people flocked to it the first few years, I believe the Art Bell show, had ads for it, a few big time talk shows.
I feel this will only extend the beauty that is found in death.
I think that being recycled into a beautiful amazing stone cherrished as a wedding ring or necklace or some sort of jewlary would be better than being placed i nthe ground for everone to forget about u or being placed in a jar for people to look at and do nothing with at leased they would wear it I'd want to be a unique piece of jewlary the most beautiful piece ever
sounds a bit warped but.. so does the thought of dieing knowing that one day you wont wake up and do your morning routine as usual you wont smoke that cigarette ur so used to smoking u wont taste that drink you enjoy so much you'll never touch or hug or tlak to anyone ever again you'll never beable to experince the simple joys life brings again you'll be nothing.
Now that is horrible thought.
This is actualy something that I have been looking into for a loved one. I find nothing morbid about this idea.
If having my loved one cremated and turned into a life gem would free up space in the ground for someone else's loved one, then it is a reasonable thing for me.
My only concern would be this. How would you verify that the gem you recieve, when all is said and done, is actualy from your loved one and not other people's loved ones or pets mixed in?
Still it's an interesting idea that has been around for a fair bit of time. To have that kind of gem to have always close to you, carying your loved one with you. The sentamental value alone would be outstanding.
Still contemplating it too.
I was talking about this with someone the other day. I think it's kinda weird and I am not a huge diamond girl myself so cannot see me having a diamond made out the ashes of a loved one or pet...but people have done stranger things
Where I am located and that is in California, I was quoted for a necklace and earings it would start at around 30,000 dollars and goes up. A funeral director said that not many people did this because it was so expensive. Also it would depend on the size of the person who died and the amount of ashes you have and the body chemistry of the person he said. He didn't mentioned them being clear but usually pink like in tone or green like. Perhaps they have perfected it more in the last few years so there are more options now. Frankly I wouldn't mind a Viking funeral and they do have these believe it or not. I just told my children whatever is cheapest...I will never know in the sense of objection at least I don't think so :)
well, I think this is rather strange, to tell you the truth. But, that is my opinion. To each their own if one of my loved ones wanted to be made into a diamond I would respect their wishes....but, i don't think I would go out of my way to have one made.
I guess that'd be cool. That was on Ripley's Believe it or Not. I guess with the dying person's consent it'd be okay. That'd be screwed up if they were grave differs and stole people's bodies to make diamonds.
Since hearing about this a few years ago I have been telling my family that I would prefer being a diamond over being burried. With the evidence that imagesinwords has brought up, however I seriously doubt that I would even consider it now. I think I would rather have a tree or garden planted over my grave with a nice statue nearby.
It is kind of a neat idea.... a bit wierd. I don't know if I'd want to have "a peice" of a family member hanging around my neck or on my finger though. Also I'd be a bit wary about sending a loved one's ashes ( or guts or what ever like Imagesinwords article stated ) to some unseen facility and possibly getting a fake. I think about those I love and, I'm sorry, no token-no matter how pretty the idea-will be a comfort when they are gone.
I see no problem with it. It's not any more morbid (as might be thought by some) than displaying an urn of ashes. The thing that is nicer about this is, you have the ability to keep a part of your loved one with you at all times.
This is not the first time I've heard of this. A while back there was a reality show on A&E called "Family Plots". Once of the cast members had a son who was chronically ill and died suddenly while in his late teens; the death was hard on all of his family. The cast member decided to have the ashes of his son made into diamond jewely for his wife and daughters. In this case, the gift of these diamonds helped ease the family's pain of his sudden loss.
I think it's cool -----
I wanna be skinned and all my tatts preserved for my wife and kids .
The unethical exposer of funeral homes seemed to have fueled business for Life Gem Co., how fitting that they would be shady in their practice as well, over priced cremation, under pretense of memorial of the dead to the grieving... how dare they.
I think It is an interesting Idea. I wouldnt do it. Like has been said, there is too much oppertunity for abuse.
LOL ~~~ Then again --Your Dead --How much worse could it get ?
I just think that it is not something I would do. I would much rather wear a piece of jewelry that they owned rather than wear a loved one as a piece of jewelery.
But that is just me.
I agree with HidingInShadows.
Personally i wouldn't turn someone i loved into a diamond.
I'd rather have something of theirs, or something that they gave me to remember them by.
I have a mirror that my Grandad Ernest gave me. I use it to do my make up everyday and it makes me feel close to him.
I had a porcelain clown that my Grandad Jack left me. I loved that dearly, but when we had a small earthquake (no-one was hurt) the clown fell of my bookshelf and broke. I still have the bits of it.
The clown and the mirror make me happier than any kind of diamond would.
Well I read up on this and at first thought it was a lovely idea. It reminded me of the old necklaces that people wore that had their deceased loved one's hair in it. Of course, I like most of the public, know nothing about how diamonds are synthetically made.
After reading imagesinwords response I am inclined to believe this is just another scam. IT is disgusting that anyone would take advantage of people when they are at their absolute lowest points in their life - mourning a loved one.
Two post above me, great concept, sadly imagine the people who pawn those memento pieces to invest into this shady biz.
A biz that played on the publics jitter about funeral homes ( a lot of shady practice was uncover at about the time this company took off)
just really cuts me, and person who has empathic understanding can relate to what I address.
Grief is one thing, but grief settled and then A revelation of being a victim of fraud.. Ouch squared.. !
Everything in life recycles itself thats why they call it the circle of life. So why not? If they can take my ashes and turn them into something beautiful like a diamond than I give them my blessings to do so. I myself want to be cremated when it is my time to go. I think I would rest better knowing that my childeren or loved ones found a more valuable way to hold onto me than some ashes in an urn I dont mind.
LadyMajik
as always ImagesinWords....a ray of pure intellect and value to the forums...
As an amateur jeweler....I would NOT trust this, not one little bit, until I got to very closely inspect one of these with the proper tools to say for myself what the stone actually was.
and I would not reccomend anyone trying to actually insure such a diamond..though the IDEA of it is quite intrigueing
but on ideas such as this heres another one to think on...
sorry, i'm shit with code...so just copypasta
http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2005/01/biojewlery.php
and another for the same thing
http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2005/01/biojewlery.php
Well at first I thought "Wow, to have a lovely necklace made out of my grandparents ashes sounds wonderful, something to cherish and pass on to future generations" ... but after reading ImagesInWords post all I am thinking now is "How can LifeGem in all good conscience do that to grieving families?" Yuck!
I was just talking about this with my dad the other day.
To me, it seems like it would be disrespectful to make ur loved one into a diamond that you can wear in like a ring or whatever.
I would not want to be made into a diamond.
-Juggalette givin MMFWCL
I would personally love to be made into a diamond. But I don't want to be worn. I want said diamond to be lost somewhere. Let someone who knows nothing about it stumble upon it and take it. To be lost from memory yet forever kept out in the open. I think that'd be awesome.
one thing I wonder.....if the only question is which method they are using...one which works...but not what their paperwork claims they use...but one less likely to work....and IS what their paperwork claims...does it actually matter THAT much outside the ability to insure it?
point is...you ask for diamond from ashes...they give you a diamond...instead of ashes.....
is it that wrong?
Recently my family and I discussed this for my cremation. I am totally for it, and it is well worth it than being just a pile of ash. I think it is a beautiful new trend to show of the loved ones who have passed on. I had my Great Aunts ashes, and all the roses we had turned into a rosary for my Cousin Isaac.
It will be a family heirloom to his children as well I am sure of it.
