Talk about taking some thing too far.
I just watched a special last evening on genetic cloning of Osterich and Emu eggs using DNA to try and create a dinosaur that resembled them from the last era. Also using Aligator eggs.
They are also hoping to extract DNA from the baby Wooly Mammoth recently found and regenerate one over time from an African Elephant.
I can unsderstand animals to help world hunger, but is this going to far messing with mother natures choices?

there are alot of things in science the i find interesting. but stuff like cloneing is just another top dog kind of thing, and it is going to far. the mamoth is extinct for a reason, it couldnt make it, let it stay dead. that goes for anything else that is about to go extinct.

Being it is in our nature to explore and understand,i say keep it up.It may produce new problems but the good that could come of it may be worth it.Like being able to grow new organs and limbs would outweigh the worries of having a t-rex running rampant .

As technology progresses, nature tends to adjust accordingly. The main problem with new technology is that people are always pointing towards some sort of imagined moral compass, whether or not it actually has any bearing.

For instance, when invitro fertilization first came into play, one of the biggest issues a significant portion of the population had was whether or not an embryo created in a test tube would have a soul. Nowadays, it's common practice for couples to have this procedure done if they are experiencing problems conceiving "naturally". Ironically, nobody really complaints about the "soul issue" is not with artificial insemination, but instead the concept (and eventuality) of custom tailored children.

In a few more years, it will be looked upon as common practice to not only custom tailor your child, but more likely for parents to screen for possible genetic defects between chromosomes. The only real difference between the two test tubes is that one is designed from experimentation and the other is brought about through years of evolution.

Amusingly enough, in the book of Genesis (ignoring the heavily mistranslated King James version) it basically stated that God said "Let us *make* man in *our* image", implying that not only was there more than one (type of) God, but that they were doing the exact same thing that so many are supposedly having qualms about.

So how do we know when we've taken things too far? We probably never will until it's far too late, and we become the next great extinct, ancient species. Only this time, instead of being the victim of a deep space impact like the giants of a previous cycle, we will be the victims of our own shortsightedness, ego and ignorance, attempting to control something which we probably don't fully understand.

Let the chips fall where they may.

Ah....The human need to mettle with things. Ashame that curiousity only seems to kill cats. The problem with this is that while they may recreate the physical creature in appearance, does it recreate the creature in earnest? Will the instincts and nature of the creature be the same as it was several thousand years ago? It becomes a question of nature vrs nurture. How much of the creature's instincts are locked in its genetic code? And how much of it was developed by its enviroment and social structure of when it existed? How do we know we would not just be creating a hairier modern Elephant? Or in the case of the Ostrich and Alligator manipulation, something altogether new? But all of these questions do not matter. It is all a matter of pride. Of ego. We are the human race. We are the smartest, most dominant creatures on the planet, and everything, even nature must bend to our will and flights of fancy. So is it spoken. so is it done.

It's not just cloning and DNA manipulation that's going too far, it's EVERYTHING.
I think one of the worst things was when they created those glow in the dark clone cats.

Soon they'll be putting chips into humans, and probably filling us with bionic or lab created organs and parts. Think how much technology has advanced in the last fifty years. In another fifty years, will humanity have forgotten nature altogether?
Who knows when the point will come that they realise that they've gone too far. I think they've already gone too far... but what can we do about it.

I think that folks are forgetting natural selection. Every echo system has a chain of predator vs pray. To introduce something new is to change that balance. doing so could kill of another specie in the process. which would lead to another animals food source disappearing putting that animals survival at risk as well.
These are the types of unavoidable problems you come across when you pit mother nature vs human technology.

Personally.... My Money is on Mother Nature.

I dont think this is right, but i am curious about the outcome

I think it can be both good and bad. Good because of food or just being able to witness what a creature was like, how it reacted to different things. The more we can learn about them it might help identify more adaptations that have been made and such.

But at the same time, if they produce to many, it can lead to other problems. Bad samples, reproduction, even possible dangerous side effects when you don't know what or was in the DNA.

I believe it is going too far, and it is NOT up to the human population to decide what animals should be bred together or be "brought back" from extinction.

In regards to world hunger, here's a fun fact that many people don't know. It's something I learned in my Geography class in college, and it really made me think:

There is enough food on this planet to feed EVERYONE 4x over. So why are there so many people who go hungry, especially in 3rd-world countries? It's a matter of accessibility, not the quantity of food levels.

For those who keep mentioning we should not play god, lets not forget that if you believe in such a being, then we were given the ability by him or her to learn and explore,to create or destroy.I don't know of any text that states that "thy shalt not clone".If we are not supposed to play god then why were we given the mental capacity to do so?We as humans have great potential to grow, lets not limit ourselves by old superstitions.Every time a loved one has surgery to extend the quality and add years to their life,we are playing god.No one complains about playing god when mom or dad gets that organ transplant. It is not the 1400's,get with it.

I don't think it's a matter of playing God I agree that we should do what we can to improve the quality of life for all people. It is a matter of thought and planing and is it the right thing to do in the first place. You can steer a car with your knees at 120 mph. that doesn't mean it's a good idea.
We clearly have the ability from a scientific capacity but if we are to create live outside of the way it was intended then we have to be prepared to take responsibility for that creation.

Some how the line to take responsibility never seems to be as long as the line that takes the credit.

I do agree that they are going too far. Scientists want to be able to create life and be god like.

If mother nature intended some of her creatures to survive then she would choose to do so.

If they do it to bring back species destroyed by mankind like the dodo.. then yes I am all for it.

But do we really want dinosaurs to be back from extinction? I personally don't want to be someone's next meal.

I agree with this kind of advancement to improve someone's quality of life or a chance to have a better shot at life.

I agree with this kind of advancement to return species lost to us due to mankind's pollutants, hunting or encroaching on their environment.

But I don't agree with mixing species to see what we can get. Or to bring back creatures better left dead... why bring them back if all we will do is drive them to extinction again like we are doing to the rest of nature.

I realize we have the firepower to drop it/kill it if it got out of control, but isn't that even more irresponsible: To create something just to in the end destroy it because mankind went too far?
That is even worse than the slack of man to take a dog/cat then abandon it only to be destroyed because the owner didn't realize they either couldn't take care of it, or didn't have it spayed or neutered.
We have all seen terrible Animal mishaps of "When Animals Attack" on animal planet. Who's really at fault there, the animal or the humans that foolishly believed they could contain and control those animals forever?

Combining the DNA of reptiles to try and recreate an extinct species seems a little over the top...or does it?

Anyone have a Labradoodle? Selective breeding has been used for centuries in animals, we take the strongest with the most desirable traits and breed them.

Do I agree with custom designing a child? No, but I don't care if my child has eyes that match my shoes. Is it wrong for couples living in China to want to be able to create a male child? Which is worse selecting the sex of their child pre-conception or abandoning a daughter they don't want?

Glow in the dark cats, that seems a little extreme but is it really all that horrible? I use to accidentally trip over or step on my cat as it walked between my feet- that wouldn't be a problem anymore. I'll bet the glowing cat would be happier than the squashed cat.

Gregor Mendel the "Father of genetics" was an Austrian monk, no one seemed to have issues with him and his peas, but I do I draw the line at teacup-humans.

People have been messing with the species for years. I'm sure everyone here knows that a muel is the cross between a donkey and a horse. (muels can't reproduce FYI)
So, even if they did make some bird/reptile being, who's to say it'd be fully functional. People have tried for years to replicate other long disceased creatures to no avail.

Even outside of the original subject of the discussion, into organ growth/transplants and such, in my opinion, The only reason I wouldn't want those things is since the world is already stressing under the strain of so many human beings. Looking at the big picture, the less people who survive, the less cars are on the road, and then eventually, less pollution, etc. It seems callous, but that's my belief on the subject. Human advancement be damned... most people would trade their baby for a new advanced cellphone anyway.
("I thought the baby needed new clothes?" But honey, this is a blackberry we can get new clothes any day, but this sale only happens once a week!")

Sad but true. I think we need to be more responsible with what already exists on this planet. I'm not the type to say quit playing god but I am the type to say haven't we gone far enough? Haven't we caused enough destruction and mayhem with our wants and desires.

Take care of what you have before even considering bringing in something you have no understanding of.

Sure studying is great but who's to guarantee these experiments can be contained?

Well when man started handling the matters of nature by making road into it, nature has stopped handling it.

see once the tree been cut and ground used as farm the tree option removed from that land.

creaed polution, taken back natural purity... this happened in short period and again handinfg over the things to nature may take decades and in present scanerio it is impossible...

I think once the time will come that you may go to lab to take your baby as you did shopping few months ago and parcel giving to you now.

I think I must create one dna lab full of sperm of each race of man and start selling baby having test tube baby production make to the order.

Why to give the pains of delivery to the feminine. ;)

But this too will cause the population here too the production control check will be formed by govt.

My thing is if they can properly make a mamoth or dinasory then they can help make sure future generations are born healthy. Have healthy DNA. This testing and cloning is helping us learn about DNA as a whole. How we can manipulate it. How we can "fix" it.

Wouldn't you want kids to never have cancer, or diabites. Or for a loved one to have something like PCOS or Dislexia, or any genetic problem for that mater.

If they can learn to manipulate DNA, it will help them along the path of "fixing" your DNA before you are even born. So you never have to suffer from any genetic problems.

Man tends to dabble in things out of curiosity, but who can say what can come of cloning. To one side there is a plus to bringing an end to animals being wiped off the face of the planet but even if it is man's fault that they are all killed off, where would they rehabitat? I personally don't see the wrong in experimentation, the knowledge can lead to greater things but having the knowledge and knowing when to use it is 2 different things. I'm for Cloning, simply for the knowledge sake.

Not sure about traits, but they do have they technology to predecide the sex of a child.
That was due to girls being abandoned in cultures that insisted on a boy caring the family name in honor.
Screening for donor clinics to specifically choose traits is already taking place in sperm clinics. Including their IQ rates.
We've all seen the controvercy over test tube babies.
How far is man going to go with this stuff until he realizes he went too far?
I think when we do realize, it will then be too late!

I think is magnificent the height we have reached in short notice, and I understand why is kept from public, simply because is evident that if such advanced knowledge what placed out there, it would be evident what many of the individuals have posted here to occur in effect of other levels of consciousness we live in. Technology is already way far than what you suspect it to be, we have the key to have clean energy for centuries if not milenias to come, is just out scheduled in the Calendar of time events, simply because the world cant change in a glimpse.

Cloning and how people see it all has to do with ethics. If they can clone body part, then there wouldn't be so many people on the transplant lists, and they could have a perfect match instead of one that they thing might work. They could help children that have diseases or health problems when they are born, some due to the mother's carelessness.

I think that them starting to clone extinct animals might be a good start for them to see how these animals lived, and help us understand adaptation and evolution. These animals come from a time period that we have very little knowledge about, and scientists are wanting to learn how the world was before humans took it over.

Raven, you brought up an interesting point that I didn't really think of before in regards to cloning. While I personally am not a big fan of it, it makes sense for us to be curious about the animals who were here before us, because those that were made a huge impact on the land we live on, and even in the water sources we use.

Thank you for bringing to light a very different point of view! :-)

This isn't Jurassic Park (yet). Right now we don't have the capability to do the extinct animal thing. But we do have cloning capability now (obviously) . But that's only because it's fresh D.N.A we are working with.

The Mother Earth always wins, all technology comes from her and the substance of her. The grass is her hair, the crust her skin, the rocks, her bones, the water, her blood, and the wind is her breath. All plastics even come from the earth originally. You have to live in balance with nature or you will extinguish that which you sought and coveted as valuable. Another words, if you put your marbles in into collecting materialistic things, then that is what you value. Technology is materialistic and drives humans to do negative things to obtain it. All the materials, even plastics, salt, electronics, oil, bread, shelter, clothes, etc.... None of it would exist without the earth providing it, so yeah, that is a big thing to think about nature, and respect it, and add that knowledge to the course of your decisions. In the western world humans obsess about leaving their mark wherever they go into eternity, but indigenous cultures live in harmony with nature for a reason. The trick is to make it look like you were never there.

Technology changes over time. Years ago, the latest techology was leather tanning and metal working. The stirrup was an amazing technology of the time. Technology is the use of nature. Evoluton changes genetics. Breeding of anamils is a very simple form of genetic engineering. Its all cool. Don't we all try to improve ourselves and attempt to improve our children? This is the next step.

Can anyone say Jurassic Park??? But if they can do this, can you imagine what we can do in a few years with more research and funding, transplant patients can get an organ as soon as one can be manufactured. Think of the lives that it can save. Hell think of the extinct animals that we have hunted right out of existence, the dodo bird, the Tasmanian tiger... We can start to repair the damage that humanity has done to the world.

Jurassic Park was just showing what might happen if they cloned every dinosaur and put them back in nature. They are talking about seeing if they can clone the cells right now, and also if they can be able to clone something like a dinosaur. They have no intention of cloning a t-rex or something like that. They are just trying t see how ostriches and allegators evolved. Scientists are not stupid enough to start cloning everything in sight. They do know how it would upset nature.

Nature can be cruel at times but it can be wonderous also. Why do we have this urge to try and muck around with nature. It cannot possibly be doing anygood. Mankind didnt wipe out the dinosaur mother nature did. So why are we mucking around with it.

Instead of doing this sort of thing why not spend the money and time on saving animals and plants that WE have cause to become very close to extinction.

??? Such huge accusation for such poor research. Please name one animal or plant alike, that have been in the verge of extinction due to human beings environmental impact or intervention. I can conclude that technology is the greatest gift nature have supplied us with. If it so bad then perhaps those against should avoid using it for every term of its usage in the daily basis, retraction of the computer for starting. You can't process the tools for the programers experimentation, variables come in range, some use it in detrimental fines other to better everything in every casing,- assimilating technology as a whole "disease of nature" or the "roll of god" is vastly ignorant and in the process of it becomes arrogant with no further insight of assertions, (mainstream direction of thinking) =for all you know mammoth anatomy could cure the "cancer" the world is desperately seeking, People should educate before spouting disinformation(a wise advise).

Leave it alone I say. Advance our Technology by all means it is a great thing and we do need it but at what cost or where do we draw the line. We have multitudes of animals on the verge of extinction due to humans.
And plenty that have been extinct due to humans hunting and destroying.
Whales for one (blue whales), Tazmanian Tigers for another.
Polar Bears are very close to extinction due to humans impact and the green house effect that humans cause.
Even certain species of bats are on the verge due to destruction of the rain forests.
The Tigers of india are few in numbers as well as the Snow Leopards.

O please! None of the animals presented were due to any of that, If so then find the constructive experiment to show this, Tazmanian tigers were hunted for the destruction cause when their was few of them left in the verge by natural causes of extinction itself, the bat, whales and whatever as well, nature selects and as for them it was in the time, if it was by human interaction then every animal in the planet were to be suffering for this, not a selecting few, even if the casing revolve on human destroying an animal, it was meant to be since we are as well nature, and out manipulation over the enviroment is natural in the semantics of our condition... Hunting/s doesn't extinct any animal, and the tigers are not due to any of that you mentioned, what do you use to assert so firmly this rationalization? And as for the Tax money commentary, that what exactly I meant, educate in the accusations before asserting statements that come from oblivious sources, If you are going to bring a news story or coverage of say topic to support it: global warming, greenhouse effect videos, Discovery channel, and television sources, etc, please don't even try we all know why is in their in the first case. I just have to add If the world was in the worst environmentally speaking their would be more things about fixing it in the Tax money usage than in cloning, I could assure you that much.

Cloning is a fact, and if tigers and whales are "extinct due to men natural responses" then this is a source one can use to bring them back, wouldn't this contradict everything you said in placed judgement?

For the most part, technology has improved our lives. It's also true that we've been short-sighted in determining all the possible downsides engendered by science.

It's for this reason that scifi always envisions a horrible outcome for all our tinkering and progress.

I like science. I'm all for the tinkering, but I worship no gods. Science and technology should lead us down a more humane path - healthy and plentiful food, abundant and clean water, non-carcinogenic air, implants to prolong life, the elimination of genetic disorders, and so on

I believe there's a reason these species died out, and that we're simply not cut out to handle the consequences arising from bringing species such as dinosaurs and mammoths back to life again. I think, while it would obviously be fascinating to see them in the flesh and witness how they interact, how they lived etc, that re-creating species is a mistake because it throws the whole delicate balance of nature NOW, at this time in history, into disarray. Possibly disasterously so.

Man destroy animals in many forms and ways, not just hunting alone.
There is nothing natural about putting an animal on the endangered species list or having go extinct due to human behavior, especially sport: such as the Biblical Lion.
Unlike the African lion, this one was in the Europes and had a black mane and a black stripe down it's back and was literally hunted and used to extinction by the Roman Empire in the arena for sport.
North American Wolves were almost in the same event facing extinction from gun crazed hunters for killing live stock. Humans moved onto their territory, they were merely trying to survive.
Thanks to laws, and National Reserves they are on the rise again and studied closely, and one of the most beautiful wild animals we have.
Bison were another.
Technology for good in helping humans and nature alike is one thing, but re-creating and cloning a huge mistake.

I am all for Science discovering ways for human kind and animals to be able to co-exist. However I am not sure what good can come of the cloning of dinosaurs.

I don't claim to be "in the know" or educated in such areas but will give my opinion based on what I believe. I agree with alot of you here that if dinosaurs were meant to have survived then they would still be here. It is called evolution. Evolution is a natural process and serves a purpose, cloning is not natural.

IlLuminaria,

How do you explain the decline in the wolf's population, or that of the wright whale, the eagle, the bear..... We as humans have hunted them to near extinction. There is no way that you can even deny that. The wright whale recieved its name because it was an easy hunt for whalers because their numbers were so numerous, yet now almost noone sees them.... And when we encroach on the territory of the wild animals within our own country we limit their food, make them more aggressive and territorial... Hell look at BEFORE the STATES were even settled, and the native americans were here... There was plant and animal life abundant... "Civilized" society has destroyed this planet and if science can bring back some of what we destroyed, then it is our duty to do so.

Very good point fyrestrike,
Humans even destroy and attempt to wipe out other human races, simply because they are indifferent. Indians especially as we all now the history behind that tragidy.
So if their numbers decline so drastically is cloning the answer to correct a selfish human default?
Prevention is a better resolution.
Someday I fear human may pay the ultimate price.

In our region they drastically sprayed for catipillers that were eating and destroying entire forest regions.
Man did NOT stop to think of the potential harm that would domino effect with that aspect.
It not only killed catipillars, it destroyed numbers insects,ESPECIALLY HONEY BEES that are required and necessary to polinate our crops for food production.
Now we have to pay western companies to ship bees in to actually polinate crops, which are facing counter attacks by African Killer bees.
If we loose Bees, and no food can be grown, not to mention natural floods, fires, drouts that destroy crops, are we able to clone them to Survive?
NOPE! Tried and failing, real bees know the difference and destroy cloned bees.
No crops, no food, no feed for livestock either!

That's a good point Roma...

By causing problems like that, and losing crop...it's not just destroying the animals, but is also going to cause us not to have food in the long run. I mean, yeah they can come up and create food that doesn't require growing it or killing it, but then what would be put in it for us to survive, and would it be beneficial for it may not have the vitamins and nutrients needed to keep us going.

I'm Wiccan so we work with nature and the elements of our world. Everything we have here on Earth is here for a reason. That's the way nature intended it. Everything we've been given through nature has been put here for some shape or form.

For example...we have plants that give us shade, food, homes for some animals, medicines (herbal), and more. Animals are here to use as food, to keep the food chain balanced, to reproduce/pollinate the Earth, and there's so much more you can consider when it comes to nature.

I mean, I can see where scientifically there are a few things we benefit from, but at the same time it seems like they are taking stuff from us. Think about it this way, technology is making life way too simple for everyone. I mean, pretty soon you won't even have to leave your home to do anything anymore. They are complaining that America is obese and all for the most part, but the more technology that comes about and makes it to where we don't have to do anything for ourselves to an extent, it's just going to make people want to be couch potatoes rather than go out and do stuff for themselves.

There's just so many pros and cons to this that it can go on forever with deciding which is the better option, but in the end I feel that mother nature will win in the long run....after all, nature has been around a lot longer than any technology that has evolved.

I conclude is impossible to knock individuals out of the system trap, I guess thats why their is so much interest and funds in the environmental issue other than public congregations(sarcasm). Again if it was a fact you would see laws upon this kind of creatures, please do research and disconnect from the TV and "news", they just want to sell the concern; yes their is environmental problems, no is not devastating in any degree, "global warming" is a phase and in fact a natural event, even if their is external influence affecting not only this planet but the others as well. Animals decrease of population in ground and seas has nothing to do with fishing and hunting, their are laws for hunting, fishing, as well as seasons for this to take place, and the purpose of this seasons as well, we have ecologist and biologist who knows the degree of things and the only one concern or more so -infatuated with this is the general public sucking the cable, and crazy breeders following it. Their is studies for this kind of issues, and are conveyed every year the marking of parameters, decrease zones, and numebering of population and metapopulations, as well as in the biosphere whole, even the endangered species are taken care of, this is all an exageration in all terming.

If the case was that we are in fact destroying species, and before us the nature selects the organism and if it came to extinction by natural effects, then we are "natural" as well, and if nature selects is part of the process of natural life, then our interaction has the same conditioning as nature in regards of natural selection. You are all grasping in "the right thing", but if is natural for an animal to become extinct then is unnatural that we try to save it when nature is doing its job. Furthermore the contradiction can be found in the belief system.

If God did not want humans to 'play God', then he would of bowling with the outter plants and wiped away Earth. If some humans will disagree with techology creating cloning, then what about the technology that created nukes? Or... How about the technology that created such things found in hospital goodor forbad, technology is apart of human life.

People might complain of cloning dinosaurs, but how many of those people would watch Jerry Springer? Episode: "I got caught sleeping with my pet Dinosaur."... Another episode would be: "Father Dinosaur secretly had a affair with the female human" and... "Human male who can not get enough sex with Dinosaur poo."

How about 50 years time? or 100? Human life will be different by then, and as life was hugely different 100 years ago. As in all of human history, there will be the 'differents'. Some humans will like some things, while other humans will like other things in life. How about instead of having a sign on the side gate saying: "Beware of the guard dog." Yous could have: "Beware of VELOCIRAPTOR."

What would really be scarey, if the same scientists would 'somehow' clone dinosaur dna with human dna...

Man may play "God" but in the end, man is NOT "God". Technology will be societies downfall in the long run... But, by the time each realizes this as truth, it may be too late to change for the better.

Just saying.

Natural selection is in nature for a reason. The survival of the fittest is not just an expression either. These animals died off because genetically they were not able to survive and nature did what nature does...weeds out what doesn't belong to make room for what does. I do not agree with engineering these creatures.

I'm sorry, I find that idiotic... Every animal is part of the food chain, yet we as MAN think that we know best... That is crap. Nature never intended on some species to co-exist... Hell look at the pig in Australia, it was imported, never there naturally... Brought over by MAN, and the pig has desimated the sea turtle population... How the hell is that Nature? Man's stupidity has endagered yet another creature....

I adore Nature.. The elements, the Goddesses and all that.. They define the world to me.. And I have been the kind who has never been too "technological".. Yes, I know how to use the wonderful creation of the Internet and all, but cloning is a topic that requires far more thought than this...

I remember when there was the issue of the cloned Donny the sheep, and my family was in utter shock at that news.. No "logical" reason, yes, but it just is wrong... Some things have survived, and others, well, they did not.. They simply did not have the required strength to do so... They simply died out.. I personally, am a huge fan of dinaosaurs, love them to bits.. but no, I would not like to see them cloned... Animals, whatever they may be, have a right to life too, but not something which has been engineered by the human hand... If it did not survive, there is a reason for that... Isn't there?

Many mainstream posts. But alright, the world is out there for the taking and as animals dying out has a purpose in your idea why wouldnt technology discoveries hold the same reasoning, I do not disagree with cloning and everything the flaw may be the intentions not the exploration, if the intentions were based on learning or extracting for a higher purpose why not; if it's for the other way around why not either from all we learn, if we have people pushing in all ways it can turn into a disaster if it's something rationally moderated from all parties against and in favor you could satisfy both in a safe way. If the world wasn't purposely designed to be striped by dinosaurs it wouldn't occur of we would never find the way to do so.
